here’s been much talk in the media lately about domestic tourism and we thought we’d jump on board and do our bit to help Northland in this sector. As well as giving some exposure to various businesses in the region, we hope to bring awareness to our readers of what’s on offer in our backyard. Over the coming months, I’m hoping to seek out and explore the hidden gems in our region’s nooks and crannies so, if you know of somewhere and/ or something that’s worth a visit or a mention, please get in touch. I’m sure fellow Northlanders will appreciate some guidance on where to spend their money wisely while making magical holiday memories. And so begins our road-tripping around Northland series. First stop: Bay of Islands. You can read about this adventure on pages 4 & 5.

Day-tripping to the Bay of Islands STORY AND PHOTOS BY JODI BRYANT

Mum decided to do a spot of shopping and

We Northlanders love a good roadie and if you’ve only got a day up your sleeve, we are lucky that the Bay of Islands can be accessed from most parts of the region in only an hour. This was the case for me and, remembering only the night before that a roadie is often enhanced with a co-driver and fellow explorer, I rang my mum. She was in. Low-slung apricot-hued mist hung in the early morning air as we drove past Kauri, creating a picturesque scene I could only cast fleeting glances at driving north. I was booked on the three-hour Winterless Cruise and Island Stopover and, arriving in Paihia with half an hour to spare, we headed to a coffee shop. Third Wheel Coffee Co had been recommended (plus Jacinda frequented there one Waitangi Day) and it didn’t disappoint. Tucked away down a little alley, this quirky, lively coffee shop was bustling but cosy. The ultra-friendly waitress greeted many of the steady flow of upbeat customers by name and seemed genuinely interested in their conversation.

With the option of comfy couches in the alley, we opted to sit indoors and take in the scenery. Adorned with funky art, bikes and coffee sacks, we sat and absorbed these themes and atmosphere and it wasn’t long before our coffees were delivered. I didn’t have long but I did note that this was no ordinary coffee. I’m no coffee connoisseur but my comments to mum encompassed ‘beautiful’, ‘silky’ and ‘creamy’. Would I go back? Let’s just say, if I were a local, I think the waitress would be needing to add my name to her repertoire.

Medicine is a great vocation The Whangarei Skin Clinic is based on Hatea Drive in a beautifully renovated 110-year-old villa. Dr Heike Detjen and practice manager Jo Cuff have been operating for the last 18 months offering medical and surgical skin cancer care, as well as cosmetic medicine procedures. They recently welcomed Marie Olsen to their team, an experienced theatre

Fostering a strong interest in skin cancer and later cosmetic medicine, Heike began her specialisation studies, becoming an accredited skin cancer doctor with the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. Over the last three years she has had extensive training in cosmetic medicine. Wanting to focus on skin cancer work, Heike established Whangarei Skin Clinic in 2018. Moving from the role of family doctor at an established medical practice into the unknown territory of solo private practice is described by Heike as "a big step which still

feels challenging at times". While sometimes challenging, being able to develop processes and get involved in the daily running of the clinic is exciting on a daily basis. The range of training and variety of her previous job comes in handy now. Suddenly all the tasks not performed for years, such as managing orders for supplies, operating the autoclave and making sure everything is clean and tidy, were on the agenda. Supported by practice manager Jo, who comes from a medical background and has worked in customer

Annè and Villa turning vision into value After working for ‘traditional’ accounting firms for many years, Annè Lensink saw an opportunity to create her own business and help other Northland businesses in the process.

whether it was cash flow advice or help with the wage subsidy.” says Annè. “The COVID-19 crisis helped narrow down ways that we can help local businesses. It really ignited ‘why’ we do what we do.” “I had been thinking of ways to help Northland businesses for a while but the pandemic forced us to think faster! We created I Am A Northland Business, an online directory where Northlanders can easily find Northland businesses to support. We took a step back and focused on how we can turn our vision into value for our clients and improving visibility and marketing during and post-COVID is something we could help with.” I Am A Northland Business is fully funded by Villa. Northlanders can list their business free of charge and achieve reach through I Am A Northland Business’s marketing efforts on social media.

“With over 120 businesses in the directory and hundreds of Northlanders following along on Facebook and Instagram, the initiative has been a real success,” Annè says. At the same time as launching I Am A Northland Business, Annè knew she needed to pivot the Villa business to ensure she and the team could meet the ever-changing needs of their clients. Villa created new business continuity, business recovery and resilience coaching services and obtained funding to bring these to clients free of charge.

“The COVID-19 crisis helped narrow down ways that we can help local businesses, it really ignited “why” we do what we do.”

“We also decided not to charge clients for COVID-19 related advice for the first four weeks of lockdown as we could see first-hand the impact it was having. Our business was not immune, the entire team has had to upskill in record time on tax regulation changes. There has been a lot of work to do so it’s been important to check in with each team member on a daily basis to make sure they’re on track. We all have our own struggles during lockdown and after, so it’s important to help each other,” Annè says. Like us all, Annè has taken some learnings from COVID-19 and the lockdown: “I enjoyed spending time with my husband and kids, and I am optimistic about the future. We have had to pivot our business, so have many of our clients. If your mindset is right and you make the necessary changes, there are positives among the negatives.”

In November 2017 Annè set out to change the face of accounting in Northland and create a firm that works alongside its clients to help them achieve success. “The beauty of starting your own business is you create the culture, the team, and the vision,” explains Annè. “I was free to map out a road that suited me and my family, a road which I knew clients would appreciate.” In just over two years, Annè has grown Villa Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors to employ five team members who all share in the company’s vision of ‘Turning Vision Into Value’ and putting clients first. This vision became paramount when the COVID-19 pandemic began to impact Northland businesses. “The first thing we all thought when lockdown was announced was how we can help our clients navigate through, and the Villa team quickly switched into guidance-mode. We made sure we were there for our clients,

hirty-five years is a long time in business. At fruition, we were 27 years old, Cheryl was eight months pregnant with twins and Karen had just flown home from England for a fleeting visit after four years O.E. It was a big Christmas. Brother Stephen, home from the States, recognised talent and urged our mother to start a manufacturing business in the garage with his sisters. Mother Dawn, an intuitive dressmaker, embraced this new challenge and, without warning, Dad became the chief cook and tea man as Polwarth Design ‘the label’ evolved. We built the business on a ‘nothing was ever a problem’ basis. We were, and still are, great listeners, and have a natural flare for design and sales. But as those ‘one off’ orders flowed, it killed our mother! She would be up till 1am cutting individual orders for her special customers. We didn’t have her knowledge and she found it hard to delegate. We took over the reins of Polwarth design after mum died. Our made-to-measure ceased and, using our manufacturing experience, we selected labels that suited our growing Northland clientele. Over the years, we have seen many retailers and wholesalers come and go, yet our model has stayed the same: ‘happy customer, happy business’, and we have endeavoured to ensure that we have a variety of labels that resonate with the individuality of our customers. Covid has been our biggest challenge and shift of focus yet. For 35 years we have pushed instore sales and knocked buying online. Yet during Covid, online shopping became our lifeline. Thank goodness for our website, Facebook and incessant Instagram presence as it was our

Our website has become our third shop and social media has become our new platform for showcasing our latest fashion focuses. It’s current, explicit and is working better than ever before. HOW SHOULD SHOES FIT?

Geniune Sheepskin

When choosing a new pair of shoes, careful consideration should be taken in how they fit your feet.

F

ootwear supports protects and provides

comfort for our feet. Therefore it is key that you get the right fitting and support you require. Ill-fitting shoes can not only cause discomfort when walking, but cause injuries that lead to longer-term foot problems such as stress fractures, hammertoes, and bunions. Long-term injuries such as these can cause a multitude of problems – such as balance, walking quality, swelling, and pain. Here are a few tips to consider when choosing your next pair of shoes: Don’t rely on shoes ‘stretching’ While some shoes boast stretchy materials such as canvas, neoprene, real and synthetic leather with natural flexible properties, you should never base your shoe purchase on ‘they’ll stretch’. Instead choose shoes that fit your feet well from the point of purchasing – this way you don’t have to experience rubbing or discomfort as you ‘wear them in’. Measure your feet While most feet are fully developed between 14-16 years old, as an adult, your feet will still continue to change size, so it is important to keep track of this. Getting your feet measured at the end of a shopping trip or long day of walking will give you more accurate results as your feet may have expanded.

Don’t just try on one shoe We’re all guilty of slipping on one shoe to try, especially if we’re in a busy shop. The problem with this is the majority of people have one foot that is slightly larger than the other. Trying on both shoes ensures a good fit for your larger foot, then you can use an insole to take up the spare room in the other shoe. This is better than trying to squeeze your larger foot into smaller fitting shoes. Take shoe (and foot) shape into consideration The best place to start when choosing footwear is to analyse the shape. Look at the widest part of your foot (this is usually the ball of your feet before your toes). Your footwear should fit comfortably around this part. It can be tempting to try to squeeze our feet into ill-fitting shoes to remain on-trend, but with so many different options available, from narrow, standard and wide fits, there is a shoe to suit everyone. Make space for your toes A well-fitted shoe should have enough space to lift your toes up and down. Not enough space for your toes can cause pain through sores, bunions, calluses and sometimes even the loss of toenails. Wear appropriate footwear to suit your activity It goes without saying, but it’s essential to choose the right type of shoes for the right type of activity. If you’re a jogger, you’re going to need specialised running shoes that provide more ankle support and cushioning than your everyday general trainers, helping you to avoid both injury and rubbing.

At Xtreme Shampoo Shoppe, we understand how important it is to treat your hair well so we are proud to share our knowledge on all our haircare and styling brands with you.

If you are looking for the real deal products to get your hair into optimal health ready for making public appearances again, then you won’t want to look past Xtreme Shampoo Shop & Salon in The Strand Arcade. Owner Vikki Bayly and her friendly team stock a wide range of top products for all hair types and they also provide a professional hair salon using luxury brands. Vikki started her hairdressing training just a week after her 15th birthday and she’s never regretted that day. ‘‘I always wanted to be a hairdresser,’’ she says. ‘‘It’s a great industry where you get paid to socialise all day!’’ She’s only half-joking, explaining that she is super passionate about the whole industry. Vikki’s passion for hair products and the latest innovations in producing better, safer, more conditioning treatments for hair, was the motivation for opening the Xtreme Shampoo Shop. ‘‘We choose our products really carefully from companies that have high standards,’’ she says. ‘‘We have to, because our clients are very discerning about using products that are sulphate and paraben-free. They’re much more savvy and they expect to get the best recommendations.’’ She says her biggest buzz comes from clients who tell her: “that product you sold me was so good!’’

Vikki believes there is no point paying hundreds of dollars to colour and style your hair, then neglecting to maintain the beautiful results. VAMPIRE FACIAL You've probably seen the photos on Instagram: A celebrity or influencer's face covered with blood splatter. No, it's not Halloween makeup, it's actually one of the latest treatment trends in skin care, also known as a ’Vampire Facial’. Celebrities, including Kim Kardashian West and Bar Refaeli, are fans of the facial, which might look quite scary, but boasts big-time results. Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy, also known as the ‘Vampire Facial’, works on the basis that the body’s own natural healing powers may slow and even reverse the ageing process. It is a revolutionary repair system that places growth factors in the exact location where we want the skin to repair and rejuvenate itself. Q. What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Therapy and how does it work? PRP therapy involves harvesting platelets from the patient’s own blood in order to inject them into problem skin areas. Before the procedure, blood is taken from the patient and put into a centrifuge, where the blood is spun in order to separate the red blood cells from the platelet plasma. The platelet plasma, which is the component of the blood that is known for being highly effective in treating burns and skin injuries, is then activated and injected

into the chosen area, where it plumps up the skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles. When the platelet plasma is injected into the skin, the platelets release their growth factors. The growth factors stimulate other cells surrounding the injection site, plumping them up and causing them to increase in volume. The platelet plasma sends out signals to other cells in the body when it is injected, telling them to rush forward to the injection site. One cell that is stimulated during the process is the fibroblast cell, which is the cell type that creates collagen. Collagen is what gives skin a youthful appearance. As we age, collagen is produced less and less, causing wrinkles and fine lines in the skin, and therapies such as PRP therapy that stimulate collagen production can counteract this. Another cell stimulated during the process is the pre-adipocyte cell, which is a cell type that can convert into a fat cell, which is especially important in the face to fill out lines and to contour the face. Q. Which areas can be treated? PRP therapy can be used on the face, particularly around the eyes, mouth and nose, the backs of the hands, scars and all over the body, more commonly the décolletage and even the knees to give skin a more youthful and radiant appearance.

• Dermaneedling • Hair Removal IPL • Makeup • Facials • Manicures • Body Treatment/Massage • Waxing • Eye Works • Anti-Aging Treatments

Q. What does the procedure involve? The treatment begins with a topical numbing cream applied to the full face and it will be left on for 30 minutes. Your practitioner will draw your blood. This is done in a similar way to when you have blood taken for testing at the doctor’s office. The blood will then be spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet plasma from the red blood cells using one of the branded systems described. The PRP will then be injected into the skin, with aseptic technique, in the desired area using a very fine needle. Injections will be given multiple times in multiple locations in order to give an overall improvement to the area. The treatment usually takes 60-90 minutes. It is very important that patients eat and drink a lot of fluids before attending their appointment. This will enable the blood to be withdrawn more easily. Q. When will I see results? It may take a few weeks for the results of the PRP therapy to become visible. In most of the cases, you will see results from a single treatment, but a course of four treatments is recommended for best results.

Q. How long will it take to recover from a PRP treatment? The actual procedure of injecting the PRP involves the use of topical anaesthetic, although not always depending on the patient and area being treated, rather than local or general anaesthetic, meaning that most patients feel comfortable returning to their normal activities not long afterwards. It is important to be aware that due to there being many injections at the treatment sites, the areas can look swollen, bumpy and red post treatment and these effects can last for a couple of days so it is best to have some time to recover. Q. What are the risks and potential complications from PRP treatments? There are few side effects associated with Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy. Immediately after the procedure, you can expect some bruising, swelling and redness at the injection sites. You may also experience some tenderness, bruise and pain at the injection sites. However, any side effects should dissipate within a few days following the procedure. At Facedoctors Northland, we aim to utilise the state-of-the-art Platelet Rich Plasma System to plump your skin, fill out fine lines and wrinkles, and give an overall more radiant appearance.

CACI’S GUIDE to cleansing your skin

Cleansers - often the unsung heroes of the skincare routine. Made to purify and prep the skin, your cleanser may not sound as exciting as the latest serum or treatment on the market but is an absolute basic when it comes to making the most of your skincare products. Why do we recommend a cleanser? Cleansers are the best way to remove the dirt, oil, and other unwanted nasties on your skin to reveal a fresh clean canvas to take care of. And if we left that dirt and oil on our skin, it would make it extremely difficult for other products to properly penetrate the skin’s surface. Plus, we all know what else dirt and oil clogging our pores leads to… nasty blemishes. And we all have much more important things in our life to be worrying about! How to choose the right cleanser? The best first place to start is to know your skin type. Look in the mirror, feel your skin, then check out our recommendations below based on what you find. I'm finding... ! dry skin Try Murad’s Prebiotic 4-in-1 MultiCleanser. This gel-to-oil wonder cleanser nourishes with prebiotics to rebalance and hydrate the skin. Alternatively try Skinsmiths Cream Cleanser. It’s formula with shea butter, hemp seed oil, chamomile and vitamin E, makes is super nourishing and the perfect fit for sensitive skin. ! pigmentation Try Murad’s Essential C Cleanser. With vitamin A, C and E, this cleanser works to neutralize and rehydrate environmentally damaged skin by removing impurities and awakening the senses with a delicious burst of citrus.

Rediscover your joy for life Sarah is an internationally-certified Health and Lifestyle Coach, passionate about helping you live your best life - a life that’s healthier, happier, and way more fulfilling.

I

started my business with the sole desire to empower as many people as I can to lead healthier, happier, and more fulfilling lives. Because I’ve been there – the place where you feel stuck in a rut, going about the daily grind, and wondering if this is as good as it gets. Before I found coaching, I spent my time facilitating high-powered workshops, consulting some of the country’s most elite organisations. On the outside, life looked perfect. But internally there was something missing. There was this longing for something more, and I felt like I was simply waiting for ‘it’ to happen. Without realising it, I'd put my personal health and lifestyle on the backburner. I stopped making time for exercise, cooking, socialising, travel, and most importantly self-care. It was a huge light bulb moment for me.

What was missing was a deeper connection with who I was and what made me happy. The crazy thing was, I wasn’t the only one feeling this way. I was surrounded by intelligent, highachieving people who were just as frustrated as me about living their life in second gear. I found myself asking ‘Really? Is this as good as it gets OR can I do something about it?’

Cue my journey into life coaching. Through my training I learnt how to live a more fulfilling and nourishing life, both inside and out. A life that was on my terms and made me feel excited to get up in the morning. The more I went down this road of self-awareness, the more connected I felt to my life. My relationships improved, my stress and anxiety decreased, and I experienced greater levels of energy, joy, and vibrancy in my days. I discovered for myself that true health and happiness really is an inside job. It's only when we start prioritising ourselves that we can be in the position to excel and enjoy our careers, relationships, health, and everything else in between of this wonderful thing called life. Now, a few years down the track, I feel unbelievably honoured to share this passion with my clients. Taking them on their own journey to unpack life’s bigger questions and define who they really are, what they want, and how to get it. Why wait for a life-changing event to live the life you truly want? Start NOW.

Malignant lesions summary

Health

Sinister signs:

E

yelids are involved in 10 per cent of cases of skin cancer and the vast majority are basal cell carcinomas (BCC). Clinical signs that should arouse suspicion are: • Gradual enlargement • Central Ulceration • Induration • Irregular or ‘pearly’ borders • Destruction of eyelid margin • Loss of lashes (madarosis) • Telangiectasia (dilatation of the capillaries causing them to appear as small red or purple clusters, often spidery in appearance,) • Reduced sensation Risk factors: prior skin cancer, fair skin, previous radiation, immunosuppression and smoking. Anatomically, lesions of the medial canthus are known to be more aggressive because of proximity to the lacrimal drainage system, increasing the risk of tumour spread. Eversion of the upper eyelid during examination can reveal lesions otherwise missed with an external exam or a more extensive lesion than initially expected. Loss of lashes and/or destruction of eyelid architecture

Summary of Lesion Types Benign lesions Cystic • Cyst of Moll • Cyst of Zeis • Epidermoid cyst Chalazion Hordeolum (stye) Molluscum contagiosum Xanthelasma Vascular malformation (port wine stain)

is often a tell-tale sign of malignancy. Central ulceration, especially if associated with ‘flaky’ skin, can represent the more aggressive squamous cell carcinomas. Rarely, eyelid lesions can indicate highly malignant disease with potential for distant spread. Melanoma of the eyelid is extremely rare, accounting for less than one per cent of eyelid lesions. More common but less well known is sebaceous carcinoma, a clinical and histological ‘masquerader’ with up to a 30 per cent five-year mortality. Sebaceous carcinomas often present as chronic eyelid inflammation or a non-resolving chalazion that gradually increases in size. Although most lid lesions encountered have low metastatic potential, larger lesions are associated with more difficult reconstruction and associated ocular morbidity. Early diagnosis is key. Types of malignant lesions

Referral is required to ophthalmologist or tertiary care centre. Malignant lesions are generally treated by clinical biopsy followed by surgical excision.

When to suspect a malignant lid lesion

Most eyelid lesions are not malignant, but careful history-taking and examination will reveal important clues when suspecting a more sinister lesion.

An enlarging lesion, destruction of eyelid architecture, loss of lashes or induration/ulceration may indicate malignant pathology.

Basal cell carcinomas BCCs are the most common eyelid malignancy, accounting for 80– 90 per cent of cases, and are typically found on the lower eyelid or medial canthus. These are typically slow growing, locally destructive skin cancers with little natural tendency for metastatic spread. A classical presentation of a BCC is the nodular type – a smooth, pearly-edged nodule with telangiectasia. As the tumour enlarges and outgrows its nutrient supply, central tumour necrosis occurs leaving a central ulcer. Complete surgical excision with intraoperative margin control is the gold-standard treatment for eyelid BCC, regardless of histological subtype, and is associated with low rates of recurrence. A biopsy may be taken prior to surgery. Actinic keratosis Actinic keratosis is a common precancerous skin lesion that has potential to develop into an SCC and is found on sun-damaged skin. The risk of malignant

transformation is only 0.24 per cent per year, but over an extended follow-up period, the incidence of SCC in an individual with multiple actinic keratoses is as high as 12–16 per cent. Actinic keratoses present as scaly, hyperkeratotic plaques with a sandpaper-like texture. Although they are usually treated with cryotherapy, when located on the eyelid margin, surgical excision is generally recommended. Topical imiquimod is an alternative option that requires dermatology referral. Keratoacanthoma. Keratoacanthoma has previously been considered a benign lesion but more recently is regarded as a low-grade SCC for which complete excision is recommended. It has a characteristic domeshape with a central crater filled with keratin and may be associated with surrounding inflammatory changes. Squamous cell carcinomas SCCs account for approximately five per cent of epithelial tumours of the eyelid but are much more aggressive than the more commonly encountered BCC. SCCs develop either spontaneously or from actinic keratosis, Bowen’s disease (SCC in situ), keratoacanthomas or radiation dermatosis. They are more common in immunocompromised patients, particularly following solid organ transplant. SCCs can be difficult to distinguish from BCCs; however, they usually have more scaling.

a designated art event space with Richard Cranenburgh

Conveniently located in Whangarei’s CBD (4 Rust Avenue) with parking close by, ‘Thursdays’ offers a unique gallery space with an eclectic mix of work. Owned by Richard Cranenburgh, artist and interior designer, the concept behind the space was to allow the viewer to visualise “living with art”. To this end, you will find art on the walls, but you will also find quirky furniture, fragrant candles, objet d’art and ideas for colour and interior design.

philosophy of artevent space Unlike the traditional ‘7 day a week’ retail model, Thursdays is designed to work as an ‘art event’ space. Grab a special moment in time to explore, to experience and to wonder. All exhibitions/events open on Thursday and run through to Saturday each week, with viewing by appointment at other times.

The brief ... In February Richard contacted two other artists to see if they would be interested in offering their visual perspective of Easter. “I wanted to dig deeper into the meaning of Easter ... we all came out with different interpretations, exciting pieces, definitely not ‘lightweight’ - they all have something to say.” The artworks in this Exhibition are the result of months of work by three very different artists, who aimed to show their work in time for Easter. Unfortunately COVID 19 took the limelight, but we are now able to open the Exhibition to the public from Thursday, 28th May The work is powerful, professional and invites contemplation.

SHANE EVANS

Based in Whangarei, Shane Evans is a professional illustrator and airbrush artist. He has painted murals for churches, district councils and private commissions. He has produced numerous book covers and interior illustrations. You will also find his work on vinyl car wraps, including traditional airbrushing and pinstriping.

LINDA SABBAGE

Inspired by Jim Allen (a New Zealand sculptor tutor) who Linda describes as a “to die for” Art Lecturer while she attended Elam School of Fine Arts, Linda’s early interest was in drawing and 3 dimensional work. “Jim inspired me as an artist but also as an art teacher, so much so that I eventually went on to teach art.” Linda later became fully immersed in painting which she found to be the most challenging medium. Design and drawing however, have always inspired and motivated her art making. She uses text, collage, language, poetry as well as acrylic medium, as far as possible following the ‘truth to materials’ concept. Linda has been an art teacher for many years working in NZ, England and Spain as well as offering workshops locally in Whangarei. She is presently organising with friends to run a Sabbage Studio, offering workshops, classes and art meets, for all those interested in any art exploration.

Warm, cosy homes with Gas Works and Plumbing Gasworks and Plumbing Ltd is a locally owned company based in Whangarei that operates Northland wide.

I

t covers a broad range of services in both plumbing and gas fitting, including residential and commercial work. It employs a friendly team of qualified and qualifying plumbers and gasfitters who can advise and certify work done. On the domestic side, home heating is a strong point in Gasworks and Plumbing’s business offering a wide range of gas fired and centralized home heating systems. These centralized systems are the fuel for the underfloor and radiator heaters and also hot water supply. This century old proven European method of home heating creates a warm even environment in your home. These systems are fired by gas, diesel or heat pump and the specialists at Gasworks and Plumbing are

able to advise on the most suitable system for your requirements. Everybody enjoys a cosy home – a home that is free of draughts and mould – a home that is warm and snug. There are many ways this can be achieved. But do you have the right and proven method in your home? Europe has had warm and mould free

homes for centuries in often cold and bleak conditions. They heat homes from a central boiler which heats the hot water they wash in and the hot water that heats the radiators in their homes. Today this system is still proven! Today’s radiators look smarter and more modern and underfloor heating with hot water has been introduced with the hot water being heated by gas, diesel, high efficiency boiler or a water heat pump. Gasworks and Plumbing’s team are knowledgeable in this area and would love to make your life more comfortable. The company has experienced tradespeople in home heating, plumbing, gas fitting, solar hot water and sheet metal fabrication. With their expertise and ideas your property could be transformed.

Fish Tank Therapy Having fish for pets has long been popular for many people.

T

he fish keeping world is ever-changing with new technologies making fish keeping, not only easier but kinder to the fish. A classic example is the memory of keeping a goldfish in a bowl as children. This is no longer advised as the fish tanks you can get now provide a much better quality of life for the fish. Not only is it better for the fish, it makes fish keeping easier for you. Fish are a great starting point for children wanting pets and learning the responsibility of having an animal. But, be warned it can become an addictive hobby - most parents end up loving the fish more than the kids. Most modern tanks have great filtration systems and LED lighting. Cleaning is a lot easier now as well; gone are the days the goldfish lived in green water. Now we have more understanding of how to correct any issues that may arise. Some stores offer services such as free water testing. This can be very helpful for beginners and makes sure you know exactly what the tank may need a treatment for or how best to deal with a situation. Fish tanks are used in a lot of doctors’ waiting rooms and other offices where the fish are there to, not only entertain us, but help calm us. Watching fish can be therapeutic as it is very relaxing. Studies have found that aquarium-watching helps reduce stress and anxiety, increases feelings of relaxation,

and decreases heart rate and muscle tension. We have a lot of customers who comment on the fact they watch their fish tank more than they watch TV. The look or landscape in a fish tank can almost be anything you desire from a natural landscape to a bright colourful tank that children would love. The selection of ornaments and plants, be it live or fake, can sculpt any landscape. There is also a wide variety of fish to keep, from your basic goldfish to tropical, and then marines. Goldfish and fresh water tropical would be the place to start, especially if you have not had fish before. Finding Nemo depicts the keeping of marine fish. These setups can be stunning but do come with a price tag and can be slightly trickier than freshwater options. Fresh water fish options still have amazing colours and are easy to keep and provide great entertainment.

Making a mudroom when you’re short on space

T

he transitional space between outdoors and in, a mudroom functions primarily as a dedicated zone to keep everything you need for your comings and goings, like footwear, jackets, rain gear and sports equipment. Many homes don’t have a dedicated mudroom, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need a place to stash your stuff right after you walk in the door. Larger homes with bigger families are likely to benefit more from a mudroom, but even smaller homes can take advantage of the organisational and storage benefits that come with this space. If you're an apartment dweller, then your ‘mudroom’ may consist of a patch of tile at your entrance piled up with shoes. But, there are plenty of space-saving solutions – including cubbies, lockers, hooks, benches, cabinets, shelves, drawers, baskets – that could bring some much needed order to your entry. With a little bit of thought and planning, you too can shape a special space dedicated to

all those everyday things you can’t live without where they’ll be organised and at-the-ready, even if space is tight. Storage is king Storage is one of those things that you can never have too much of. Not only is a mudroom the perfect place to eke out some extra storage space, it is a convenient one too. When you’re tight for time and already have one foot out the door, the last thing you’ll want is to have to search for something important. When planning your mudroom, think about the specific needs you and your family members have, including the types of outdoor activities you regularly partake in. Jackets, footwear, keys, wallets, sunnies, hats, umbrellas, scarves, gloves and mail all need their own dedicated ‘landing pad’ if you want to keep clutter under control. Remember to think about things like bike helmets and locks or dog collars and leashes and the like.

MORE MUDROOM IDEAS •

If you’re designing a new home from scratch, consider a mudroom/laundry room combo right at your entrance – especially if a member of your family has a muddy job or hobby. Soiled clothing can go straight into the wash to keep dirt away from the rest of your home.

Bright, patterned Resene wallpaper adds an element of fun, colour and personality to a mudroom. A design that comes in multiple variations can be used to create colour-coded ‘cubbies’ to separate the belongings of different family members.

If you have a dog with a penchant for puddles, add a built-in rinse-off station to your mudroom to wash your canine down before they enter the main part of the house.

If you live near the sea, your mudroom may end up serving as more of a ‘sandroom’. Plan to store and organise towels, beach bags, hats and water gear, and add a rough mat for brushing the bottoms of your jandals off.

Don’t forget to add a mirror so you can make sure you’re looking your best before you head out the door.

Passive Sewage Treatment The NaturalFlow™ wastewater system is revolutionising domestic wastewater and sewage treatment processes in New Zealand. Waterflow NZ Ltd’s engineers spent more than a decade researching and developing the NaturalFlow system before integrating it into the New Zealand market. Their vision being to reduce the high-tech dependency with the consequent risk of system failure, costly power usage and constant monitoring that is all too common with traditional septic wastewater systems. Nature is one huge recycling mechanism. The NaturalFlow system utilises these recycling mechanisms of nature by, harnessing its forces that have been quietly working together for thousands of years to break down and decompose waste all around us, and positions them in an enclosed eco-system module that simulates the natural forest floor. It will treat and break down your wastewater – just as nature does – and then reintroduce it into the environment when it is perfectly safe to do so.

HOME OFFICES

As we all continue to navigate the new normal, supporting the local businesses which we know and love and trying to keep things at home calm and secure for our families, the home office has become a more valuable and occupied space in our home.

C

reating a space which fosters productivity is just as important as making it a space you actually want to spend time in. Whether you are just spending a few hours a week or using your home office full-time for the foreseeable future, making the space functional and beautiful generally comes down to having the right type of storage. Unfortunately, home offices often double as spare bedrooms or repositories in the home for all the things we can’t quite seem to get rid of. The first step to organising your home office is to sort through the 'stuff' and make some decisions about how you want the space to function by the end of the process. Do you need immediate access to all of your files at once? Is there perhaps somewhere more suitable for you to store sports equipment or old coats? Maybe you could get away with a sofa that folds out to a bed instead of the bed currently taking up most of the room? In our home office we currently have four adults jostling for time and space in there. Furniture which allows you to have the screen space that you need, as well as providing storage opportunities, is key.

Nigel Turner 2018 Platinum Homes NZ Salesman of the Year

A nice medium-sized table is how we currently have things set up to allow for two computers and a printer between. Files are kept neatly in accordion cases which are labelled on the outside so there is no need to flick through all of the contents to find what you are looking for. As home offices are often small rooms or nooks, the vertical space can be used for storage too. Maybe a tall narrow bookcase instead of a low wide one would suit the room but provide the much longed for storage.

Diaries of a new home build BY ALEX BADHAM

And we’re back! Although in a slightly different headspace with our build than pre-Covid.

L

ike many other people currently building a home or dreaming of building, the last couple of months has been a tough time. Financial uncertainty, as well as general unease, has made us really consider what it is we want to get out of our home build. First and foremost, we want our home to be a place of sanctuary for us and our family, a place where we can feel relaxed and safe, and a place where we can live the lifestyle which we love. This means space for entertaining, as well as flexibility with our work. We have used the lockdown period to reconsider our plans and make some changes which we think are going to play out really well in the long run. By reducing the size of our second and third bedrooms, we have managed to incorporate a small office nook to fit two stations, as well as a mini scullery. As a family who loves to have friends over for dinners and long weekend afternoons, having space for a larger sized fridge and kitchen storage will make life just a little bit smoother. Although the last couple of months has been slow progress for us, we have been grateful for the opportunity to take stock of what our home means to us and our growing family and how we can improve on our

LPG water heaters, also known as tankless or instantaneous water heaters, provide hot water only as it is needed.

T

How do LPG Water Heaters work?

hey don't produce the standby energy losses associated with storage water heaters, which can save you money. LPG water heaters heat water directly without the use of a storage tank. When a hot water tap is turned on, cold water travels through a pipe into the unit. A gas burner heats the water. As a result, LPG water heaters deliver a constant supply of hot water. At the heart of most modern LPG hot water heaters is an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) that controls how the gas flow through hot water heater works. The ECU controls all of the functions of the instantaneous gas hot water systems including temperature control, ignition, gas flow and modulation. It is also responsible for the safety aspects, with a flame sensor and automatic gas cut-off, in the event of a problem. As the flow rate and temperature of the incoming water can vary, the ECU modulates the amount of gas that goes to the burner, turning it up or down, as the gas flow through hot water heater works. This modulation of the gas and burner intensity is what

keeps the water at a set temperature. Some continuous flow through hot water heaters have temperature controllers that allow the user to pick a temperature lower than the factory preset. Theses controllers can be located on the flow through hot water heater itself, wired to a remote location -- like a kitchen or bathroom -- or even wireless. The ECU takes the input from the controller to further modulate the gas flow and burner intensity, keeping the water at the user’s desired temperature. Most flow through hot water heaters come with their maximum temperature pre-set in the factory. This is a safety precaution to help prevent possible scalding. 50°C is typical for residential applications. For homes that use 155 litres or less of hot water daily, LPG water heaters can be 24–34 per cent more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters. They can be 8–14 per cent more energy efficient for homes that use a lot of hot water -- around 325 litres per day. You can achieve even greater energy savings of 27–50 per cent if you install a LPG water heater at each hot water outlet. The initial cost of a LPG water heater may be greater than that of a conventional storage water heater, but LPG water heaters will typically last longer and have lower operating and energy costs, which could offset its higher set up price. Most LPG water heaters have a life expectancy of more than 20 years. They also have easily replaceable parts that extend their life by many more years.
