Kerikeri family rebuildtheirlives Onestep at atime

Kerikeri’sEricand Rachel Jordan came to NewZealand with theirbabyson from theirnativeAmerica to transformtheirlives. However, adevastating helicopter crashlastyeartransformed it for them.Theyexplain to Jodi Bryant,the rippleeffects from that fateful dayand howpositivity,goalsetting andsupportfromtheir kiwi friendsishelping pave theway toward rebuildingtheirlives.

RachelJordanalwaysknewsomething majorwouldhappentoheraround theageof40butshedidn’tanticipate relearningtosit,standandwalk followingahelicoptercrashattheheightof hercareer.

“Ianticipatedallmylifethatsomething majorwasgoingtohappenatthatage,”says the42-year-oldmotherofone.“ButIthought itwasgoingtobeadisease.Itwasgoingtobe life-changing,I’vealwaysknownit.”

Normallyshe’dlistentoherintuitionbut whenshehadanuneasyinklingthatJune daylastyear,shesilencedit.Itwasacouple’s weddingday,afterall,andshehadthehonour ofphotographingit.

Themulti-award-winningphotographer wasandstillissought-aftertocapturepeople’s specialdays.Herphotographycareerbegan25 yearsagodoingportraitsbeforeshemovedinto weddingphotographyfollowingarequestto photographafriend’snuptials.Sheloveditand herportfolioevolvedfromthere.

SheandhusbandEricbeganTwoLittle Starfish,specialisinginfine-artphotography depictingintimatestorytelling,withherwork describedas“emotional,whimsicalandelegant”.

ItwasRachel’spassionanddrivetocapture theseimportantmomentsinpeople’slivesthat ledhertoCanterburythatcrispwinter’sday. Havingalreadylostmultipleweddingjobs becauseoftheCovidpandemic,she’dleapt atthechancetophotographaweddingin betweenrestrictions.

Pushingasideherfearofflying,bututtering thewords:“Pleasedon’tcrash”,tothepilot,she boardedthehelicopterforthepost-ceremony photoshootinthepicturesqueSouthernAlps.

Thenationknowswhatfollowed;Only momentsaftertake-off,thepowercutouttothe RobinsonR44beforeitplungedsome100mto thegolfcoursebelowwherethebrideandgroom hadearlierexchangedtheirweddingvows.

Allfouronboardsurvived,laterattributedto thepilot’sflyingskills.However,noonefeltthe impact,havingblackedoutbeforethecollision.

Rachelrecallswakeningamongthe wreckage:“Iknewmybackwasbrokendueto notbeingabletomovemyfeet.I’dwatched enoughmoviestoknowthatit’snotagreat sign.Iwasverycalmthoughandlaterlearned Ididcrawloutofthehelicoptertoadegreeas Ithoughtthehelicopterwasgoingtoblowup. Sowhentheambulancearrived,Iwaslayingon thegroundwithmyfeetstuckinthehelicopter.

Thechopperwascompletelysmashedtothe groundsotherewasnobottomanymore,just grassbeneathus.”

Asurgeonandhisgroupplayinggolfnear thecrashsiteimmediatelyrantotheiraid.They askedRachelifshewantedtocallanyoneand sheaskedtospeaktoherhusbandathome.

"Isaid,'Honey,we'vebeeninthiscrash andIknowmybackisbroken’.Myhusband didn'tknowifIwasbeingseriousbecauseI wasspeakingsocalmly,buttherewasthis screaminginthebackground."

Allpassengerssustainedextensiveinjuries. Rachel’sincludedafracturedspine,alongwith sevenofherribsandsternum.Onelungwas halflaceratedbyherribs,andshebrokeher rightwristandfracturedbonesinherfeetand ankles.Shealsosufferedabrainbleed,though hashadnolastingeffectsfromit.

ShewastakentotheIntensiveCareUnitat ChristchurchHospital,whereshespentseveral weeksandunderwentmultiplesurgeries,before beingtransferredtoMiddlemoreHospitalin Auckland,closertoEricandsonEvan,then10. NurseshadtoturnRacheleverythreehoursand thepainwaslikenothingshe'dexperienced. Naturally,theusuallypositivethinker,attimes, foundherselfteeteringondepression.

Butachangeinmind-setsawRachelwean herselfoffallmedicationand,incredibly,onthe

dayshewasduetoleavehospitalthreemonths aftertheaccident,shetookherfirststepsand walkedrightoutofAuckland’sspinalunitwith theaidofawalkingframe.

"ItoldeveryoneIwaswalkingoutofthere, Irefusedtonotbewalking,"shesays.

"Itwasmygoal.

“Idon’tknowwhatitwas,itneverfeltrealat thetimeandInevergotdownaboutitbecause IalwaysfeltlikeIwouldwalkagain.There’s definitelytimesyoucangetdepressedbutI haveanamazingsupportgroup;myhusband andsonandsuper-supportivefriendswhowere alwaysvisitingme.”

Withborderrestrictions,RachelandEric’s ownUS-basedfamilyhavebeenunabletoflyto theirside.

SaysEric:“Withoutthefamilybeingable toaccessusatallphysically,we’vehadtodo everythingthroughZoom.Theyfeltsoutterly helpless,itwasveryscaryforthem.Theywould havebeenherenomatterwhat.

“Therewerealsoacoupleoflockdowns where(EvanandI)wereseparatedfromRachel whileshewasfacinglotsofchallenges.”

Withoutnearbyfamily,theendlesssupport fromtheirkiwifriendshelpedimmensely, alongwithdonatedfundsofaround$25,000 throughGivealittle.

InSeptember,Rachelreturnedtotheplace sheandEricmadetheirhomein2011afterthey hadsetofffromtheirnativeAmericawitha six-month-oldEvantotravelNewZealandinan RV.Kerikeri,withitssomewhattropicalclime, smalltownandsurroundingcountrysideticked theboxesforwheretheywantedtosettleand they’veneverleft

Reflectingonhowthecrashhasimpacted lifeforthefamily,Ericshares:“Iwouldsayit’s likeit’ssentripplestoeverylittleaspectoflife thatyoudon’tanticipateittouching.Ittouches everycorner;yourfinances,relationships,your dailyroutine,youremotionalstate.

“Everything’slikeworkingourwaybackto normalcy.Itbasicallytoreourentirebusiness downsowe’vehadtorebuildthatfromthe groundup,”continuesEricwhostartedadesign companyintheStates,aged19,whichheran formanyyearsmanaging35people.

“Therewasnotalotofnaturewherewe lived,everything’sconcrete.Wewouldgotothe littleparkstositinthegrassjusttosmellthe flowersforabitandstopforthemomentso, withNewZealand,wewantedtoreconnectwith natureandwewantedoursontoappreciate thebeautyaroundus.

“I’vehad alot of dreams thatI canwalkagain so I’mhoping they come true.”

“Wetriedtochangeourpaceoflifebut thehelicoptercrashjusttookourplansand turnedthemupsidedown.Basicallywecame toNewZealandtotransformourlivesbutthe helicoptercrashhastransformeditmore.”

However,thecouplehavewatchedtheirson Evanblossombeforetheireyes.

“Ineveranticipatedthathewouldbeso strongthroughoutitallandIthinkit’sdefinitely grownhimuphavingtodealwithsuchalarge challengesoyoung.Whenhewaswithhis muminthehospitalhewasjustamazing,he wasreallycalmandstronganditmadehim emotionallymature.Buthewaskindofanold soulwhenhewasbornsohe’sapproachedthis thesameway,”sayshisprouddad.

Rachelsaystheirsonhasbeenahuge helper,instrumentalwithherrecovery,ashas settinggoals.Goals–aproductofapositive mind-set,arealsobasedonRachel’sintuition.

“I’vehadlotsofdreamsthatIcanwalkagain soI’mhopingtheycometrue.”

Tohelprealisethem,shespendsthree hoursadayworkingouttostrengthenher body,incorporatingbothcardioandweights,in additiontophysiotherapy.

“Whenyouhaveapartialspinalinjury,it’s literallyaboutrewiringyourbodyandalothas todowithmentalperseverance.Youcansiton yourbutteverydayandhatelifeoryoucanthink positiveandyourbodywillrespondtoit,”she

explains.“It’sarealslowprogressionwithspinal injuriesbutthingsimprovemagicallyweek-toweek.Ifyougetdepressedanddownonyourself, you’renotgoingtoworkoutandgetbetter.

“Iwasalreadyagoal-orientedhuman–Ihave tohavegoalsinlifeandbecreating.Idon’tsit anddwellontheaccident,Ijustthinklifetakes youonajourneyandthere’sapurposetoit.”

Whileoriginallyparalysedbelowthewaist, Rachelsaysshecannowfeeleverything, thoughhasdrop-feet.

“ItnolongerfeelslikeIhavesandbags strappedtomylegsandIcannowwalkwith canesanddrivethecar,”shesays,adding thatdrivinghasgivenbackherfreedomand independence.

Sometimessheneedstoshiftthegoalposts furtherwhensherealiseshergoalswerealittle ambitiousbuteventuallyshereachesthem.Her latestistoditchthewalkerinsixmonths.

MygoalistowalkunassistedbutifIneedto walkwithcanesfortherestofmylife,sobeit.”

Gettingbackintoherbelovedgarden–her otherpassion–washugelyrewardingonceshe masteredit.“Icouldn’tevengetdowntothe groundtogarden.It’sliterallylikebeingababy. ThenIhadtotrainmyselftogetbackupfrom

theground.I’vebeenaddictedtogardening forever,it’smyzen.”Anothermilestonewas regainingcontrolofherbladder–“suddenlyI couldpeeanditwasbeautiful!”

Aswellasdailyworkouts,gardening,the schooldrop-off,spendingtimewithherson andhusband,thebusymumhaspickedup acameraagainandisrefocusingonportrait photography–lesstaxingonthebodythan weddingphotography-andaimstoopena Kerikeri-basedstudioinsixmonths.

“Portraitphotographyisaloveofmine that’snevergoneaway,”saysthe2020Best PortraitPhotographerrecipientintheLooksLike Filmawards.“Thefocusisonfemaleportraits especially,suchasmaternityandglamour,”she explains,addingthatsheshootsfromherwalker.

TheexperiencehasalsomotivatedRachelto onedaycreateanorganisationtohelppeople inwheelchairsfeelbeautifulbygivingthemfree photoshoots.“There’saveryhighdepression rateforpeoplewithspinalinjuriesandIwant tomakethemrealisethattheyareworthywith theseinjuries.However,Iamstillhealingmyself sothisisstillagoal.”

In2019theNewZealandInstituteof ProfessionalPhotographynamedherRegional

PhotographeroftheYearand,thesameyear, shewonBestWeddingPhotographerinthe LooksLikeFilmawards.Andherreputation isstillflourishing;Sheishavingtoturndown dozensofbookingsforweddings,whichbreaks herheart.

“That’sbeenthehardestthingformeand I’veactuallycriedmoreoverthat.Thephysical aspectsisfinebutIlovedcapturingpeople’s days,Ididitfor13yearsandshothundreds ofweddings.Itwasprettymuchmylifeevery weekend.It’sliketakingpartofmysoul.

“It’ssohardbecausewhenIgetarequest, theirweddingcouldbeayearfromnowbutIjust knowhowphysicallytaxingonthebodyweddings canbe.Butbeingabletoshootweddingsagainis averybigdrivingforceinmylife.

“IthinkI’msuper-luckythatmybodyis healingandcanmovewhereitcouldhavebeen somuchworse.It’sjustacompletelydifferent shiftinthewayIseeeverything.Ifsomebody hastheirhealthandareabletodostuff,then they’resuper-blessed.”

Itisbelievedtheotherpassengers recuperationiscontinuingandinvestigations intothecrashareongoing.

Intermsofhowheroutlookhaschanged fromayearago,Rachelhasthistosay:

“Lifeisreallypreciousandshortand appreciateeverylittlemomentyouhave.WhenI wasinhospital,afriendwouldpushmeoutside everysingledayjusttotouchthedirt.Ijust neededthatbalance.Now,IappreciatethefactI cangarden.Thesamegoeswithexercise.These thingspeoplethinkaretorture,Iappreciate.

“Everybodyhasatimestampandwedon’t knowhowlongitwilllast.Before,Iwouldget stuckintheseheadloopsworryingaboutlittle thingsandwhatpeoplethoughtofme.Allthe differentlifestuffjustseemssominisculenow.”

Rachelhas returned to portraitphotography,recentlyproducingthismaternityimage.

TheBerninaNorthlandFashionAwards arereturninginAugustafteratwoyear Covid-inducedhiatus.Theprestigious awardsshowcasecreativedesigner talentofallages,stagesandabilities.

Theeventbeganasafundraiserforthe HorahoraKindergartenAssociationbeforethe then-ownersofBerninaNorthlandpickeditup. Rotaryeventuallytookover,asdidSandyand TimRobinsonwhentheypurchasedBernina Northland.Afterthelasttwoyear’scancellation, asmallgroupcomprisingSandyandTim,Brian

Morris,andOliviaGareljaofCreativeNorthland, haveformedatrusttoruntheshowunder.

ThetrustiscalledtheTaiTokerauArtisan FashionTrustandwasformedspecificallyto runfashion-basedevents.Timsaysthevision istocreateaNorthlandfashionweek,hosting anumberofevents,culminatingintheBernina NorthlandFashionAwards.

SupportingtheTrusttodeliverthe2022 eventisDanBlack,awell-knownWhangārei localwithaneyefordetailandanawardwinninghairdresser,whojoinstheteamas inauguralcreativedirector,andshowjudges DameDeniseL’Estrange-Corbet–NewZealand fashiondesignerandfounderofWORLD, HinurewateHau-generalmanagerofCreative Northland,andLeanneKemp-localartistand wearableartfashiondesigner.

On show at WhangāreiArt Museum May21-August 21,2022, QuietMotel is an exhibition of contemporary paintings by artist Imogen Taylor.

Thethresholdwasreachedaroundthe timethevehicleeventuallyarrived.The originaldeparturedateofearlyNovember hadbeenshiftedtomid-Decemberafter changingrouteduetolikelydelaysvia Singapore.However,aftertravellingto SouthHampton,thenBelgium,itfinally gotunderwayDecember28whereitwent aroundCapeHopetoDurbanandwaited 10days,beforegivingupandcontinuingto Freemantle,Melbourne,Sydney,Brisbane andfinallyAuckland,saysMike.

“Thewholeideaisthatwecangetto anypartoftheairportwithinthreeminutes andputafoamprotectionblanketaround thecabin.ThenFENZ(FireEmergencyNew Zealand)shouldarriveshortlyafterand provideextramanpowerandresourcesto helpwithrescueandtotalextinguishment ofanyfire.”

Todate,hesays,therehasneverbeena bigaccident,thoughtheoccasionalsmall incident,suchassmokeinthecockpitdue toanelectricalwirefault.

Following alengthy delay, it was finallybomb’sawayoff Onerahi’s newly-installedpontoon…and then winter setin.

ThefirstbombsofftheOnerahipontoon communityprojectweresuspended withthedelayofresourceconsent followingallegedcomplaintsfrom neighbours.However,thegreenlightwas grantedinAprilfortheproject,originallydue forcompletionbeforeChristmas.

Theprojectwasthecombinedvoluntary effortsofvariouscommunitymembers, includingtheOnerahiFireBrigade,underthe nameofETuOnyx.Theideawastoprovidean opportunityforyoungpeopletobeactive.

Afterbeinglaunchedandtowedtoits positionalongsidethesmalljettyatthe JohnsonStendofBeachRd,ablessingwas held,beforelocalsperformedtheirfirstleap.

SpokespersonMikeChubbsayslaunchday wasthefirstdayofschoolholidays–abeautiful daywithlotsofpeopleabout.“Butthetidewas outatmiddaysowedidn’texpectalotofaction thefirstweek.Thenitgotcolderandrained.”

Fewhaduseditsincebutitwasexpectedto bepopular,comethewarmerseason.

Hesays,anumberofresidentshad reservationsaboutthepontoon,likelycaused bythememoryofwhentheadjacentjettywas installed25yearsago.

Thelocationwaschosenbecauseofitslackof current,asasafeplacetoswim.Locatedaround 50mfromthejetty,itwouldonlybeusableat hightide–aroundfourhoursaday–whichhe believedwouldpeakfortnightlyweekends.

Healsospentmanyhourslookingafterthe reserveatTamaterau,nearhishouse,where thehallissituated,whichincludedcleaning upbeach-goers’rubbishandchasingaway noisyteenagers.Itisbelievedhediedduring oneofthesenight-timechecksofthereserve inSeptember1986.Hisasheswerespreadin thereservewhichWhangāreiDistrictCouncil namedDevonshirePark.Aplaquewasplaced theretocommemoratetheworkhecarriedout inthearea.Itnameshimcustodianofthepark withtheMāoritexttranslatingto:“Agentleman heldinhighregardbyMāoriandPakeha”.

Followinghisdeath,OnerahiPrimaryhada treeplantingservicearound1987anderecteda “DevonshireGrove”sign.However,itisbelieved muchofthiswaslostwiththeconstructionof theadjacentroundabout.Anewplaquewas placedwithlastmonth’splanting.
