Editor’s Note
S
itting in an empty rehearsal theatre, I desperately wanted to join the ladies up on stage. It’s been many years since I’ve had the chance to perform to an audience and although I spent many of these years avoiding every opportunity, the Burlesque Beauties may have lit this fire within. I watched the group practice as they confidently expressed everything that was female, womanly and empowering. The show was tasteful, fun and full of tease. Shapes of all sizes lined the stage and every one of them as sexy as the next. There are a few troops here in Whangarei, and the appreciation of this art form is on the rise. We also talk to the owners of The Bernina Sewing Centre who have recently won an award to be proud of as well as many local businesses doing what they do well. It’s always great to be able to shine the light on our community and watch as this little city spreads her wings. Thanks for reading.

OUR PEOPLE
The first time on the stage for some local women
PHILIPPA MANNAGH
Described as a musical work to entertain and create laughter, the Burlesque Beauties dress rehearsal oozed tease, sultry looks and tasteful provocation, minus the satire of traditional burlesque. Carly Kahluá, Moulin Rayge and AshyAmoré are three sassy, classy and fun Burlesque dancers that are taking to the public stage to enlighten audiences.
T
heir vision is simple, women empowering women; their workshops are aimed at giving females the confidence to love themselves just the way they are. Especially mums who have lost themselves in the daily chaos of being wives and mothers.
The feedback is powerful, the empowerment and transformation of incredible people. Burlesque isn’t just dancing; it’s a humbling journey of confidence, sassiness, sexiness and a support network. “Through each session, I learn to love myself and my body
more and more and I’ve made incredible lifelong friends,” says Ashleigh Barchard, aka AshyAmoré. “We work hard to remind women that they are beautiful, worthy and how important self-love and confidence is,” she says. The passionate trio has had around 43 ladies through their

OUR PEOPLE workshops recently, with 15 of them going on stage at the last live event held at Forum North, some whom have never performed before. As a spectator, watching from empty seats as the local women practised their routines, the nerves were real, the atmosphere excitable. There was nothing rude nor dirty involved in the show, a common misconception out there for many. Every time I presumed something borderline offensive might be coming up next the group held the professionalism to ease into a tasteful position before any boundaries where crossed. One of the workshop graduates described her experience as making her feel strong, sassy, sexy and above all else proud to be a woman. Another member of the troop mentioned, “I had massive anxiety, no self-esteem, I was completely socially awkward then one burlesque workshop was done and I’m hitting the stage for the show, walking around in short shorts and bursting with life! The old me is making a comeback.” Watching these confident curvy ladies embrace who they are sends a strong positive message for us all to accept ourselves as beautiful, no matter what size or shape.

Audacious Autumn BY KAREN MATICH, POLWARTH DESIGN
V a little chilly ? WHAT’S FOR AUTUMN??
ogue’s catchphrase for autumn is audacious, challenging us to be daring, bold, cheeky or just downright risky as the little Couture Red numbers above illustrate. Which one can you see yourself sauntering through the office in or sashaying down the freezer isle at New World? Luckily for us the outrageous catwalk whims of fashion designers have been watered down by the time they hit our stores. Ruffles, leg of mutton sleeves, fur, irregular hemlines spring from beneath sassy coats, jackets and covers that work. Luckily for us our designers design for real people. Check out these designer classics that are now in store…
A change in season demands a few new wardrobe additions. The new autumn collections at Polwarth Design are looking seriously stunning

Sweaters are oversized or tailored, cropped or irregular with stand-out features that shriek ‘edgy’ and demand skinny pants. Sabatini covets the ‘white shirt’ prize once again. Simply tailored, oversized or fitted to the waist with a snazzy peplum and stand-out black buttons they can be teamed back with cropped culottes or a super skinny, mid-calf length skirt.
The Benefits of Belts
surprised at just how many people get this wrong and put on a curved belt upside down which will be uncomfortable and do nothing for your figure. 7. If you are petite then you are probably better staying away from very wide belts and opting for narrower ones instead
FASHION
M
any of us are unhappy with are our body shape and would like a slimmer waist or narrower hips so here are some pain free tips for looking slimmer without dieting or undergoing surgery. It’s all about belts….and finding the right belt for your shape. If you are one of those women who think that belts are only for skinny girls or that they are uncomfortable take a few minutes to read these quick tips as to what to look for and how to fit and wear a belt and become a happy convert. Remember that wearing the right belt in the right position on the right outfit can make you look as if you have lost inches. Here are a few tips: 1. Firstly, always look for a good quality leather belt with a leather lining. They will wear well and mould themselves to your shape. 2. The most flattering belt is cut with a gentle curve and is between 6-8cm (approx 2 ½ to 3 ½ inches) wide. 3. The most flattering place for a belt to sit (unless you have the perfect figure and can get away with anything) is just below the waist and dropping down slightly at the front. 4. Stay away from any belt over 4cm (1 ½ inches) wide that is not cut with a curve, as it will not drop at the front. 5. If you are wearing your belt on your lower waist or hips then pop it on and fasten over your waist (or the smallest part) then let it drop into position. 6. To check that you are wearing a curved belt the right way up, hold it out in front of you and make sure the belt is ‘smiling’ (the curve goes up at the ends) before you put it on. You’d be
and don’t wear them too low on your hips. Everyone can look good in a belt once they have worked out what works best for them and overcome their fears. Forget hiding yourself under baggy clothes, feel empowered and love your curves.

ove wearing comfortable activewear, but hate looking like you’re always heading to the gym? Sports luxe is the perfect fusion of fashion and fitness, a combination of practical athletic wear and comfortable style. When you need to be on the go, but you don’t want to, and not sure how to pull off this on-trend look? Here are our top tips.
Look 1:
Gorgeous dresses + casual sneakers Keeping it loose and casual but giving your look a twist of style is what sports luxe is all about – it’s easy to master once you have the knack! One of the most popular combinations is the dress & sneaker look, where femininity and sporty comfort come together. The key to the sports luxe trend is keeping your style while making it all look effortless and comfortable, and these dresses are perfectly suited for just that!
Look 2: Designer tees with accents: metallic, artistic, patterned The humble t-shirt is finding new glory with the sports luxe look, and popular designers have happily come out in favour of the funky, fun and easily wearable trend. To keep in line with the popular look, choose a top that has a loose yet fashionable feel. You really can’t go wrong with a designer tee, simply team up with a pair of smart/casual pants and a pair of comfortable shoes and you’re ready to go!
Sweatshirts have had a resurgence in the fashion world, the new sweats have novely prints, metallic details or embroidery to give it a fashion edge.
Look 4:
The Classic T-Shirt Dress We all love looking feminine while still feeling relaxed – and what better way to achieve both than with the ever-popular t-shirt dress? Luckily the t-shirt dress is a sports luxe wardrobe staple; team it with a pair of sneakers or stylish sand shoes and you’re rocking one of the hottest trends around.
Look 3:
Knit yoga pants + trendy sweatshirts If you love the soft, comfortable feel of jersey-knit pants, then your luck is in! The sports luxe look is all about looking relaxed and comfy, and knit pants are just the thing to pull it off.

Fundamental starting blocks in building healthy skin FOR SKIN THAT GLOWS BY OLIVIA ANDERSON
A
s a beauty therapist, people have asked me “What sort of products should I be using to make my skin look healthier?” Not an unreasonable question at all - given the advancement in skincare on offer today. But before you invest in the some quality cosmeceutical skincare, its important to consider the fundamental starting blocks in building healthy skin.
First up.You guessed it - Diet Water and oil is especially important. The water/oil bilayer of our skin are PARAMOUNT for holding moisture in the skin. So before you go overboard with your fave moisturiser - ensure you’ve boosted your skins natural moisturising ability by slugging back a few glasses of water and throwing a few generous handfuls of flaxseeds on your salad, in a smoothie or on your toast - avo, tomato and flaxseed = YUM! They’re so versatile - you can add them to almost anything to supercharge your skin with omega 3 fatty acids. Excerise Another word we don’t like to hear too often, but without it our skin becomes sluggish, with a poor supply of nutrients being delivered to the skin. The high amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants we expect in our serums and moisturisers definitely benefit the skin, but it makes perfect sense to make best use of these goodies in our diet by helping them move their way around the body. Sleep Did you know that insufficient sleep accelerates the aging
process? While we sleep, our skin repairs itself, generating new collagen. As well as this, blood flow is increased while sleeping, again, delivering all our nutritional goodies and that yummy flaxseed goodness to our skin, helping us wake up with more of a healthy glow. So take a break from the series binge-watching, and give your eyes some well deserved rest (your peptideloaded eye creams can only do so much)! And let’s not forget one of the truest anti-aging tools available. Sunblock All.Year. Round. Why all year round you ask? Applying sunblock only in the summer months is a common mistake. While UVB rays cause tissue damage by burning the skin, premature aging and skin cancer are predominantly caused by UVA rays (unlike UVB), UVA affects us at anytime of daylight, 12 months a year. Finding a suitable sunblock for our face can prove harder than a trip to the supermarket. Regular sun care products can clog the pores and cause all kinds of nastiness in the way of congestion, bumps and blackheads. So spare no expense in finding a suitable one. There are plenty of high quality options that also include extra skin nourishing ingredients. Mineral make up is a great option, as it has built in physical UV blockers. The best place to find these, are your reputable beauty therapy clinics. They can also take into account your individual skin requirements.

The secret is in being kind to yourself BY CORRINNE AUSTIN
I
’m going to let you in on a little secret. It’s something I have, over time, learnt to be true, and it’s a subject that my wisdom is maturing in daily. It’s something that I’d love gazillions of others to acknowledge, accept and appreciate. Simply because our bodies are our temples, our residences, and our means of living. And it’s the least we can do to nurture and preserve them. Here goes! The secret to health, to weight loss, and to radiating an eternal zest for life is in being kind to yourself in both a mental and physical
capacity, and doing this consistently and constructively. That’s right – being kind is the simple answer we’ve been overlooking for too long. We need to do away with what I have framed as the thrashing, bashing, and trashing attitudes – we feel pressured to thrash our bodies with exercise, we bash our psyches for unjustified reason, and trash our bodies with too much food or drink that actually is doing barely anything to truly nourish us (namely sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and processed foods). Investing in our health needs to be a positive,

stimulating, and empowering adventure, and it should always be aided with compassion and enjoyment. For years, decades even, we’ve had this notion that the best way to achieve health was through exercising hard and exercising often. And if we ate something bad, then that was ok so long as we made up for it with a triple intensity, double duration exercise session. But when there’s more obesity, poor health, and psychological conditions than ever before, we’ve surely got to come to the conclusion that something isn’t working here – that perhaps that very formula needs adjusting..? Despite it being the 21st century and being surrounded by the many technological advances and conveniences of today (some, of which, aren’t actually serving us any convenience at all), our biology - the way our bodies are made up – is exactly like it was 100 or 1000 years ago. And a women’s body wasn’t made to be smashed into the ground physically, nor pushed to extreme levels of exertion or muscular fatigue. It’s not in our body’s physiology, and nor will it ever be. We are biochemically constructed to be the ‘lover’, not the ‘fighter’. Women are meant to be the compassionate, kind-hearted home-makers and family-makers. We’re built to undertake physical duties for sure – just not to the degree we have succumbed to in recent times. As such, when we are fronted with these extreme measure, our bodies stress levels sky rocket. Our body can’t differentiate the different
sources of stress, so we respond in the way that evolution designed us – and that is to fight or flee. This psychological state induces fat-storing, muscle-destroying, and immune suppressing functions, along with debilitating effects in thyroid, liver, gut and sex hormone systems – and unfortunately none of those consequences contribute to improved health. Being fit and being healthy are not one and the same – they are mutually exclusive, and we need to get our heads around this. I urge you, as a women seeking the best health and vitality you can, to change your mindset to one of kindness when you consider all aspects of your health. Include strength training exercise that strengthens your muscles and invigorates and energises you. Stroll and explore your environment, and embark in plenty of restorative movement like yoga, stretching, meditation, tai chi, or lying calmly whilst focussing on your breath. Eat nourishing, nutrient-rich foods most of the time, and allow yourself a treat or two occasionally – especially during times of celebration. Replace the poisons (sugar, caffeine, and alcohol) with something that’ll boost your health and stimulate more enduring happiness and contentedness. And above all, speak kindly to yourself. Nothing great was ever achieved by slamming oneself with derogatory, destructive words. If you want to experience greater health, practice and exhibit greater kindness. It’s that simple.

The macula is the central part of the retina, the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. The retina processes all visual images. There are two types of MD, dry and wet. Dry MD is more common than wet and results in a gradual loss of central vision. Dry MD may progress to the wet for mover time. Dry MD is generally thought of in 3 stages. The early stage is characterized by the presence of drusen. These are small yellow deposits that buildup under the retina, and are easily detectable during an eye examination. Vision is usually unaffected. Intermediate dry MD is characterized by one or more large drusen that commonly result in blurred vision and a need for more light to read. Vision maybe mildly distorted and an early central blind spot (scotoma) may develop. Advanced dry MD, or geographic atrophy, occurs when there is significant loss of retinal pigment and results in a larger central scotoma. This makes reading almost impossible and requires people to rely on their peripheral vision that remains intact. Wet MD is characterised by a sudden and severe loss of vision caused by abnormal blood vessels growing under the retina. Immediate medical treatment of wet MD is essential if symptoms occur.
STARGARDT DISEASE
While Macular Degeneration is normally associated with ageing eyes, an inherited form known as Stargardt’s disease can affect children and young adults. Stargardt disease is a bilateral inherited retina ldystrophy usually affecting the central retina, the macula, resulting in a deterioration of the central vision.
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS?
HEALTH
MACULAR DEGENERATION
MD is thought to be caused by genetic and environmental factors. People over the age of 50 years are at risk. If you smoke or have a family history of MD, your risk of developing the disease is much greater. Key symptoms may include one or more of the following: • Difficulty with reading or any other activity that requires fine vision. • Distortion, where straight lines appear wavy or bent. • Distinguishing faces becomes a problem. • Dark patches or empty spaces appear in the centre of your vision. If you experience any of these symptoms contact your eye care specialist immediately.
MACULAR DEGENERATION EYE HEALTH CHECKLIST
• Have your eyes tested and make sure the macula is checked. • Don’t smoke. • Keep a healthy lifestyle, control your weight and exercise regularly. • Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Limit your intake of fats, eat fish two or three times a week, eat dark green leafy vegetables and fresh fruit daily and a handful of nuts a week. • In consultation with your doctor, consider taking a zinc and antioxidant supplement. • Provide adequate protection for your eyes from sunlight exposure, especially when young.
NUTRITION
A range of nutrients are important for good macular health. If your diet is lacking these you should consider taking a supplement: • Lutein and zeaxanthin: These are present in high concentrations in a healthy macula. They are found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach, silver beet and kale. They are also present in peas, pumpkin, brussel sprouts, broccoli, corn and beans. • Omega3: All fish and shellfish contain omega-3 but higher concentrations are found in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, anchovies, trout, herring, sardines and tuna. • Other nutrients: Your diet should include other nutrients that support good macular health. These include zinc (oysters, nuts, legumes);vitamin E(nuts, whole grains);vitamin C (citrus, berries, tomatoes;and selenium(nuts—especially

hen Karl and Daniel Marsland decided to pool their hospitality skills together to purchase and run a bar in their hometown of Whangarei their goal was to provide a fun environment, good food and the best quality service they could. That was 2007 and they grew the business by focusing on providing patrons the best possible all-round experience where no request was too difficult, even fulfilling the occasional customer request for a special lunchtime meal. It paid off and now the Marsland brothers are celebrating ten years in business for the popular, award-winning Rathbone St bar and restaurant they named Split. “The name Split is a reference to ancestral connections with the ancient Croatian city of Split,” explains Karl. “Our great-grandfather came over from Yugoslavia to work in the Northland gum
fields and our grandfather was born on the family farm as part of the Dalmation community in Poroti. The venue is also split between a bar and a restaurant and also between two brothers.” The two separate areas within Split, cater for a restaurant dining experience with cocktail bar, or a garden bar with a fun relaxed atmosphere, and a giant screen for entertainment. Where once the focus was more baroriented, the progression of Split has entailed a 50/50 focus on both food and beverages, after the drink-driving law changed several years ago. “Food is now more predominant and that has generally been the shift in hospitality. So we have also evolved and become a restaurant-driven business.” Fresh ingredients are sourced from local suppliers where possible and customers can choose from the

Is healthy REALLY the new skinny?
A
s far back as the 1030’s until recently, popular culture made being skinny and rail-thin the image many people aspired to. It was the “gold standard” of supposedly good health. Eating what would literally fit through the “eye of a needle” was normal.
For most people this way of living was damaging to health and cruel punishment for the soul. We have now wised up and that perspective is finally shifting and people are now embracing a healthy, well-nourished body image rather than the skinny, gaunt frames of the past. With slogans like “Strong Is the New Sexy”, people are now focused on being strong, toned and fit, rather than thin and undernourished. Torturous, calorie restrictive diets filled with synthetic chemicals are now becoming a thing of the past. Nourishing, “clean” (unprocessed) nutrient-dense eating is now the “in thing”. A recent article in Business Insider reports the diet industry is dying, and an emphasis on health is what people are now focused on. People are looking for a metabolism that works, a detoxified, clean system, natural weight loss, a toned, fit body and the energetic, sustainable glow that shows you are super healthy. You SHOULD get healthy to feel good. You will notice a change if you do it right. You will have more energy, your skin will be clearer and you will be HAPPIER. When your canvas is literally as big as a house, you want to make sure you get the paint colours right. Here are some tips and tricks to steer you in the right direction.
How and where do you start to select paint colours? To find inspiration for a great exterior scheme, look all around you. Check out other houses in your neighbourhood and in areas that have similar house styles to yours. Keep a scrapbook of any ideas that you come across that you love. This will give you a great place to start as you will get a good feel for your personal style. Check out the array of colour swatches at all Resene ColorShops, and browse through home projects on the www.habitatbyresene.co.nz website.
What’s in fashion when it comes to house exteriors? We’re opting for simpler schemes based on three to four colours – one for the main body of the house, another for the trims and another for the roof. The fourth is an accent that might be used on the fences. You might choose a fifth colour to be used for a striking front door. Greys are currently very popular for exteriors, ranging from greyed off whites, through to deep greys and into black. Try colours such as Resene Triple Sea Fog, Resene Pitch Black wood stain or Resene Baltic Sea. Add a favourite bold colour on your front door in a high gloss finish to really make it stand out. Bold reds, oranges, yellows, limes or blues are all popular options. Indulge one of your favourite colours. As a front door is small it’s easy enough to paint over it in another colour in the future if you want.
Is black the new white? In the last few years, a popular architectural look has been to use black on exterior walls with pale trims to create a striking effect. Using this scheme may be limited, however, by the cladding or substrate you have on the outside of your home as many manufacturers have minimum light reflectance requirements that restrict you to using lighter colours. Darker colours generally absorb more heat from the sun than lighter colours, so may not be recommended on unstable substrates. You can find out the LRV (light reflectance value) for a colour by looking at the back of Resene colour chips or check them out in the online Resene colour library – www.resene.com/ colourlibrary.
And if I still want to use a darker colour? Consider using the Resene CoolColour range formulated with special pigment technology to reflect more of the sun’s energy than a standard colour. This keeps the coating and substrate cooler, reducing the risk of heat damage such as warping.

Ready for a facelift?
Are there other restrictions I might encounter? Some councils place restrictions on colours that can be used on a house exterior to create more harmonious neighbourhoods or to make sure houses don’t stand out too prominently from the natural environment. Check with your council for any restrictions in your area. Regional colour palettes for some locations Most homeowners choose colours that will fit with their environment and the rest of the street, while others prefer their home to stand out. If you’re choosing bold colours, it might pay to discuss it with your neighbours first.
How can I choose a tried and true colour scheme? If you’re nervous about choosing colours, taking inspiration from other people’s projects is a great way to see what the colours will look like. Bring in a photo of your home and let the Resene staff help you with your colour choices. They see a wide variety of successful decorating projects and tend to have a good idea of what will, and just as importantly won’t, work. You can also employ a professional colour consultant. Always test your colour with a Resene testpot as colours will change depending on what they are painted onto and the quality of the light. Colours usually look much lighter outdoors, especially in our strong sunlight. They also change depending on other colours you put beside them, for example, a grey roof will make green walls look fresher. A high-gloss finish will make a colour look brighter than if you choose a lower sheen finish.
What about schemes that honour the heritage aspects of my house? If you have a heritage home from any era, check out the Resene Heritage colour range and discuss these with a colour consultant. These are classic colours and combinations that tend to outlast changes of fashion and will complement the architectural features of your house.
How can I disguise flaws? High sheen paint is easier to keep clean but it does tend to highlight imperfections. Conversely, lower sheen paints hide imperfections but can be harder to clean. A good option is to choose a semi-gloss finish, which hides more imperfections than a gloss but will also be easy to clean. Fences that have surface imperfections such as those found in rough sawn timber can look better in a low-sheen finish and a darker colour which will also better complement and offset your plants and landscaping. What about accents? Should I highlight the window joinery and trims? Should I go lighter or darker? It comes back to the style of the house. Only highlight details if they are worth it and you want them to be noticed. If all else fails, you can always paint over anything you decide you don’t like. Make sure you live with it for a short while first though, as like a new haircut, you’ll often find the colours grow on you once you have had time to get used to the new look.

Texturising your Home BY RYAN BOURKE
T
his year it looks as if consumers might
finally move away from the stark look of white subway tiles, imitation marble
accessories and accents of copper. Experts predict 2017 to be a year of texture when it comes
to homewares, and it’s about time! Texture is all about using shades of a similar hue and mixing it up with different materials. The trend lends itself nicely to natural materials like wood, wool, flax and even mud brick tiles. However, 2017 home trends won’t just be not just limited to textures. Built-in furniture is predicted to make a comeback teamed with a shift away from open plan living to more defined living spaces. Think cosy, luxurious and homely. Here are three ways for every budget to make your house stand out this year.
Thrifty but On Trend Accessorising is the way to go if you’re on a tight budget.

Luckily, introducing texture to your home is an affordable way to create a sense of luxury. By picking a tone in accessories you already have, one or two new pillows and a statement rug in a similar hue can create a whole new look in your lounge. If you’ve got the luxury of a large open plan living space, try breaking it up a bit with strategically placed screens and pot plants of varying heights.
Planning on a New Addition? The two most common renovations in a home are either kitchens or bathrooms. If you’re planning a new addition, think about how long you want it to last. Renovating and being on trend are two completely different things. No one wants to be left with a pink bath long after they’ve gone out of fashion! Luckily, this trend lends itself nicely to classic living spaces. Practical storage solutions should be your number one priority. Create custom cabinets that fit your appliances so you can keep them out of the way. This leaves you tonnes of room to accessorise with whatever the current trend may be.
Splashing Out If you’re all about the texture, go all out! Kitchens with wood shelving (real as opposed to the laminate stuff of the last decade) will always be popular, as will bathrooms with tiled floors in a neutral colour. If you’re fortunate enough to have wood flooring in your home, try putting a matte finish on it for a unique take on a classic feature.

How to use the colour you love in your home BY SARAH BURROWS
D
esigning a room is not always easy and when it comes to using colour I take this seriously. Keeping up to date with the latest trends and informing the client of what is on trend is what i am always sharing. One of the latest trends which Pantone announced in 2017 is Green. A refreshing shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings. This colour not only makes us think of greenery and foliage but also lets us feel revitalised and connected with
nature. However if you’re not so inclined to use green, look at what you wear and think about those colours that actually make you happy or pick up a fan deck or colour wheel from your paint supplier. If you like purple, look for a focal point in the room that draws your eye in. I suggest drawing the room in birds eye view like the professionals so that everything is in proportion. Be sure to view different shades of purple and blues, go
shopping and carefully select a cushion or an ornament in that colour. I cannot stress how important it is to think about your curtains or blinds as this can be a focal point in a room. Take photos of ideas and put them together on a board so you can visualise it all together before buying too much. Think about bringing neutral colours or white in to create a feeling of lightness and balance. If you do your research well in the beginning you will have the room you love to be in and have more joy in your life.

Rabat is the capital and Casablanca the most populous city. The melting pot of flavours that make up Moroccan cuisine are a combination of African, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern. Typical Moroccan dishes include tagines - gently steamed stews, and bestillas - sweet and savoury flaky pies. Spices also play starring roles in Moroccan kitchens with chillies, cinnamon, cumin, coriander, saffron, paprika and ginger being popular. Mutton, lamb, beef and chicken are the common meats together with couscous, bread, rice, pulses, root vegetables and seasonal fruits. The following recipe is a quick, easy meal with Moroccan influence.
Lamb tagine with apricots The preparation time is 30 minutes. The cooking time is long on low heat. However, once it is in the oven it does not require attention. • 750g lean stewing lamb, cubed • 1 tablespoon oil • 1 each: large onion, carrot, sliced • 1 teaspoon each: ground ginger, turmeric • 1/2 teaspoon each: ground cumin, cinnamon, nutmeg, white pepper • 2 tablespoons flour 2 tablespoons sliced, preserved lemon flesh, optional • 3/4 cup each: beef stock, orange juice • 400g can apricots, drained Preheat the oven to 160oC.

Most people, whether they are Irish or not, wear green on this day. One of the Irish traditions is to pinch anyone who is not wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day.
The leprechaun is a small Irish fairy. He is dressed like a shoemaker, with pointed shoes and hat. He also wears a leather apron. Leprechauns are supposed to be unfriendly little men who lives alone in the forest, spending all of their time making shoes and guarding their treasures. If someone catches a leprechaun, he will be forced to tell where he hides all his pots of gold. However, the leprechaun must be watched at all times. If his captor looks away, the leprechaun will vanish along with his treasure.

The shamrock, pot-of-gold and leprechauns are also associated with St. Patrick’s Day. The shamrock was worn as a badge on the lapel. Three is Ireland’s magic number and the three petals that make up the shamrock are supposed to bring good luck. The three leaves also represent the Trinity in the Christian religion.

very two years adventurous artists from across the world, keen to work in tandem with others, gather at the Manaia Camp at Whangarei Heads for a week to share and learn new skills. The 70 participating artists get the chance to explore new mediums and connect with some of the world’s most creative minds. They grow their artpractice whilst collaborating to produce wonderful and unexpected art-pieces in a sublime setting. The 2017 CollaboratioNZ event is a seven-day marathon of creativity starting on Friday 10 March and concludes with a ‘no-reserve’ auction of every artwork on Saturday 18 March at Forum North. The auction is open to the public and is a good chance to buy stunning original
artwork at very reasonable prices with proceeds used solely to pay expenses and seed the next event. On Tuesday 14 March CollaboratioNZ will open its doors from 10am-3pm for a public open day, giving you the opportunity to see the artists hard at work. Local jewellery and long time CollaboratioNZ participant Steve Haywood says “The opportunity to work with some of the best people in their fields and have free exchange with these artists is incomparable.” This event is one of the biggest on the Whangarei arts calendar, so venture out to the Heads for the open day or come along to the auction to see the results of a week of collaboration.
or a nation who’s national bird is a kiwi, very few people have had the privilege of seeing a kiwi in the wild. However, here in Northland, there are some great initiatives happening to protect the remaining 8000 kiwi in the region. Thanks to the hard work of many people, the loss of one of our national taonga (treasures) is being halted and hopefully reversed, so that kiwi get a chance to breed, survive and thrive in Northland. There is a saying, “if it’s going to be, it’s up to me” which sums up the can-do attitude motivating the 80 plus landcare, kiwi care and coast care groups which have been established in Northland alone. As New Zealanders, we can all follow the philosophy of being kaitiaki (caretakers) of the land. This may mean different things for different people however everyone doing their bit leads to a collective push to reverse the loss of birdlife as well as their habitat. It is not only the kiwi that are struggling consider the fairy tern. They are only found only in Northland and Upper Auckland and only eight breeding pairs remain. Also the kokako with only a hundred breeding pairs

remaining. Despite this, there’s many positives starting to emerge - kiwi increasing where they are protected, streamsides and wetlands being planted, coastline habitats being looked after. For 2017, are you able to do a bit to help? Consider as grandparents - what legacy are we leaving to our grandchildren and greatgrandchildren? As parents, how can we get excited about engaging with nature and inspiring our children to do the same? There are some simple ways we can contribute to protecting our precious fauna and flora. Some opportunities to get involved include attending a kiwi release, ask your local school if they have an enviro schools programme, set some traps around your own property or talk to your local landcare group. Our native birds are precious, as are our forests and while it’s exciting to see progress being made through hundreds of volunteer hours and tireless efforts, there is still much work to be done. The more people get involved, the more chance kiwi have to thrive and greater chance to see these wonderful creatures in the wild. Enjoy yourselves out there!

new exhibition at Whangarei Art Museum Te Manawa Toi showcases a survey of current uku (clay) practice, and the work is likely to be quite different from what you may have seen before. Whenua Hou: New Maori Ceramics features the diverse work of 8 Maori artists who explore a range of responses to the physical and conceptual properties of this very tactile artform. The exhibition includes work from Dan Couper, Davina Duke, Stevei Houkamau, Hera Johns, Tracy Keith, Jess Paraone, Hana Rakena and Aaron Scythe. The touring exhibition is curated by Karl Chitham, Director Tauranga Art Gallery, and Kim Paton, Director Objectspace and generously supported by First Sovereign Trust. The project came about as a response to the successful Uku Rere: Kaihanga Uku and Beyond. Developed and toured by Pataka Art + Museum, this exhibition was on display at Tauranga Art Gallery from May until August last year. “Whenua Hou: New Maori Ceramics is a snapshot in the evolution of uku practice as it exists today,” Karl says. “It has a unique flavour, highlighting the diverse approaches of each artist, while also making a distinct statement about contemporary Maori art produced today,” he says. The exhibition will include a body of work from each of the participating artists which will be a mix of new and existing pieces representing a broad range of forms and approaches to clay. Whenua Hou: New Maori Ceramics can be seen at Whangarei Art Museum from February 27 to May 21 2017.

Simple Living
risp cider in hand, feet up and a balmy breeze drifting through the bedroom doors. Saturdays are soon becoming a favourite of mine now that school’s returned to busy routines and early weekday mornings call for an organisation level that is beyond normal. I am often opting to stay home when it comes to the weekends, one of my reasons stems from a borderline addictive one. You see, recently, I am opting to stay at home on the weekends.... I know, this sounds very broad, possibly boring. However, we are zoning onto an area of our lives that has yet to be discovered. To have less and be happy, to give away our belongings box after box, to only keep what we need. It’s been incredibly freeing, empowering and healing. Who knew our junk could have such power over our lives? You may remember years ago; I started writing about our frugal journey?

BREAKING DAD
The husband had been made redundant during the recession; I was writing a column each month from home with our two little children at my feet. We set out to half our already modest grocery bill each week, grow vegetables and cut costs where we could. I soon became “Little Miss Frugal” to the followers who read my blog. Years later, the frugal side of our hearts fell away somewhere along the journey. We started to live a lazy lifestyle I would call it, wasting food, buying too much, using the car when we didn’t have too and no signs of veggie life anymore. We stopped counting pennies. Although frugally purchased, our wardrobes now overflow with clothes we don’t wear or even like, and for some reason, we now own enough coffee mugs to offer cafe services from our home. How does this happen over time? It’s time to throw the C word around. Cull, cull, cull. This year, less is more.
Stay at home parent?
Need a break?
I
love kids and I want my children to socialise with other ankle biters as much as possible, but pretty much every playdate I’ve ever organised has been a fail. It’s my fault, not the kids’.
Something which makes it hard for other parents to trust me with their kids is that I’m a six foot, hundred kilo dude with a loud voice. I guess the other parents’ theory is that because I’m a giant ogre compared to a child, I plan to grind their kid’s bones to make my bread. So, a message to all the parents out there: I do not plan to eat your kid. Cool? Anyway, if a lot of the parents out there want to keep their child restricted to school and home all week, good luck to them. Personally I don’t believe in high fences and shut gates and mistrust. I’m a believer in old fashioned neighbourhoods where kids are in and out of each other’s houses, perfectly safe, with an adult not far away if needed. Kids grow through adventure and experimentation and curiosity. Together, children can teach each other about nipple gripples, Chinese burns, nuggies and also they can learn the hard way what happens when you hassle bees, dogs and ducklings. Anyway, here are a couple of the aborted playdate experiences which are starting to discourage me from ever being nice to other parents again.
1. The Cinderella playdate: One perfect afternoon, never to be repeated. There was a role model kid with impeccable manners I wanted my boy to play with. His dad, though, was a strangely old guy as stern and inflexible as Principal Skinner on The Simpsons. A successful initial two hour playdate took place. I texted Principal Dad two weeks later, gently suggesting a second playdate. He texted back, “No.” Just “No.” End of story.
2. The dad who can’t remember my name There is a dad whose son wants nothing more than a sleepover with my boy. I’ve given the dad my business card three times and the dad still can’t remember my name when we have a yarn outside the classroom. I refuse to do play-business with him until he remembers my name.
3. Multiple playdates in which I have had to adopt the kid More than once, my son has gotten grumpy and given up on the playdate after half an hour, leaving me sitting there watching another kid splash on the Slip ‘n Slide all afternoon. Just a grown man and a halfnaked stranger kid. Yup. Not weird at all.
4. The playdate where the parents dropped their son off in a hurry because I think they were going somewhere to do ‘adult stuff.’ I think the mum is pregnant now, so I’m glad I did my bit to help. Yay: one successful playdate. Sort-of.
