t’s that time again where we focus on weddings here at Savvy for all those newly-engaged. Inside, as well as finding nearly everything you need to know to prepare for the event, we have featured some local weddings with a twist. Have a read of Mel and Gary’s epic story – this couple re-found each other over the internet and married again 23 years after their first 80s wedding! I came back to Mel with follow-up questions and her story got better and better, as I told her. Her reply: “I have given you the brief version! There’s so much more but not for public consumption!” she laughed. I dare not ask so we can only wonder … Then there’s our cover bride – check out this action-woman’s mode of transport! As Amanda said, her wedding guests were not at all surprised when she rolled in on a Harley Davidson.

Making a Thunderous Entrance
Amanda Ashby sure knows how to make an entrance. In fact, the rumble from the Harley Davidson she rode into her own wedding resounded throughout the valley. “Originally the idea was I wanted to do a burn-out but I didn’t want to scare the kids so, in the end, I revved it so it rumbled right through the valley,” laughs the motorbike enthusiast. It was actually Amanda’s now husband Nate who kick-started her interest in bikes. The newlyweds, whose families both hail from Kaikohe, had never crossed paths until they were set up 13 years ago. “We just hung around in different circles, I guess. Nate was raised in the country and I was into sports but I became good friends with Nate’s sister. She knew we were meant for each other and organised a beach date for us to get to know each other better… It obviously worked because he stole my heart straight away! “We had similar upbringings and both have a love for fitness and training as well as the fact that we love kids. I guess it was a perfect match.” The couple now have five children, ages ranging between 2-15, who are into dirt biking, while their parents love road bikes, particularly Harleys. “Nate has always loved riding motorbikes and got me into it. We love day-tripping to Cape Reinga or doing a scenic drive to Russell or Opononi through the Waipoua Forest. It’s another world when you ride a motorbike. It’s beautiful and peaceful and you lose yourself on the ride. “The rumble and power you feel when you ride is incomparable, so it was easy to decide that a Harley was going to be the wedding entrance,” says Amanda, adding that she rolled her wedding dress beneath her for the ride.
So, were guests surprised by the bride’s mode of transport? “Not really, I think they were more like ‘Trust Amanda to do something like that!’ I used to joke that I would wear sports shoes in because I would wear sports gear wherever I go. But I decided I’d better give the dress the justice it deserved and ride in in the dress and heels. “Plus, they know Nate and I aren’t very traditional and we wanted a wedding best catered for us.” Indeed, the wedding, held at Whareora’s beautiful Willows on Abbey venue in late January, was not your typical. For starters, the bride only had ten weeks to plan it! “This was actually our second attempt because the thought of organising it seemed overwhelming but, in November, Nate said to me, if you can pull it all off before February, then let’s get married.

“He was actually joking but then he started freaking once I started putting the deposits down. “We wanted it simple. We didn’t want to get caught up in things that didn’t matter and we wanted to be able to enjoy our day, not just as husband and wife but also as a family unit
together with all of our children. We kept our guest list small at 70 to allow them to be able to enjoy the day with us, mingle with each other and share in the good vibes.” Amanda says the rustic theme and beautiful stretch marquee, which looked like a ‘big white spider web’, made all the elements that were usually unmatched, blend together nicely. “It looked perfectly-planned because it all went so well together but our wedding people and venue host made everything readily-available to use the venue as a blank canvas to create the wedding exactly as we wanted. “My bridesmaids were awesome and helped with all the small details that I might have otherwise forgotten. They entered the wedding venue behind us in a gorgeous black Chevrolet Bel Air.” Determined to incorporate their children into the ceremony, the couple’s ‘baby’ was the flower boy, along with a friend’s daughter, their girls were bridesmaids, their eldest son a best man while their eight-year-old walked Amanda down the aisle as ‘father of the bride’. After the exchanging of rings, their children were each presented with a taonga by their parents to bind them together as a family unit. “Then our marriage was announced as official husband and wife!” Besides rolling up on a Harley, Amanda says the highlight of the day was ‘how perfectly stress-free everything went’. “I am so thankful for all of our wedding people on board that helped make our day beautiful and easy. We had planned a simple, stress-free wedding without too much fuss and it far exceeded our expectations. The day was just flawless.” The couple have recently returned from their honeymoon in Queenstown where they raced each other round the Highlands Motorsport Park in a Mustang and Ferrari and, of course, hired motor bikes to explore the scenery.

It was love at first site for Mel John and Gary Pepperell, who married soon after. So then how did this inseparable couple reunite over an internet site only to remarry 23 years later? Mel shares her story with Jodi Bryant. “Gary was in the RNZAF as an aircraft engineer and I was teaching in Glen Eden. One night, a couple of my girlfriends took me out to Whenuapai Airman’s Club and it was love at first sight. We were inseparable after that,” explains Mel. Gary was 22 and Mel, 24 and they married at Titirangi War Memorial Church in 1989 in what Mel describes as a ‘full-on 80s wedding’. “There was pink and green eye shadow, big hair, big sleeves, big smell – Opium perfume, a big crowd and a big bill.” “I remember being totally caught up in the drama of the wedding. I was so nervous about all the arrangements – for example, the wedding jag broke down and my dad had to drive me to the church in his red Honda Civic - that I didn’t feel the moment.” However, Mel says the couple led an adventurous life in the following two years. They left New Zealand and Gary took up a contract to work on an aircraft in Belgium. The aircraft turned out to be owned by the Libyan Air Force so, when it was complete, the couple went with it to Libya. “Our time in Libya in the 90s was amazing. They were beautiful people and it was a beautiful culture,” she recalls. “We worked there for a few months, which were during the first Gulf War – needless to say, our parents were a bit worried.” They then headed to Paris, followed by a stint in Istanbul, where Gary worked at the airport and Mel taught. However, during that time, Mel’s father died young so they returned to New Zealand to be with family. “We returned to Istanbul following my dad’s death but I became quite down and things went wrong between us. Grief is a terrible thing. It affects everyone so differently. I left Istanbul and went to the UK.” The couple divorced in 1991 and tried to unsuccessfully reconcile a year later. Deciding to carry on with separate lives, they both travelled the world working, and kept in touch for a couple of years until 1994 when Gary told Mel he was about to become a father. She then pulled away so he could

concentrate on his new family. They both remarried. However, their subsequent marriages didn’t last. It wasn’t until 2010 that Mel re-found Gary through an internet seeking site. “As far as I knew, he was still married so

I wanted to check in with him to hopefully hear his life was great. I was surprised to hear it hadn’t been as straight-forward as I had hoped. We wrote to each other and, at this stage, we were just two old and dear friends who were catching up.” To reunite, Gary drove across England into Wales to take her out for dinner, before returning the same night. Mel recalls the moment of their reunion: “I waited on the seafront for him and could see him in the distance - it was amazing, just like time stood still. His first line was: ‘I could tell it was you from miles away’. I told him: ‘And I could tell it was you.’ “The funny thing was I had been befriended whilst waiting on the seafront by a drunk old man who I couldn’t shake off. When I saw Gary, I got up and walked towards him and the old guy came with me! He was standing there when Gary and I hugged... it was hilarious. It took a couple of minutes to recover from that before we started talking.” Mel says the huge connection between them was still there and they realised they should never have been apart. “We talked for hours over the next week or so. We had so much to talk about, so much of

our lives to fill in. During this time, my grief poured out of me again - grief over my dad and losing Gary. In retrospect, we were too young to address the issues we had when dad died. Being older, it was easier to understand what had happened to me and us. We talked and talked for a while and decided we had to be together. “Everything between us was easy - all the best relationships should be ‘easy’. We saw the history we had and the things we had in common. There was definite love there over all the years we’d been apart. It was now difficult to be apart as there was a sense of belonging.” Mel says their close family were surprised at the reunion, yet supportive. And both Mel and Gary’s girls, from their subsequent marriages, got on very well. Ironically, it was through the same website, that Gary’s other daughter, adopted-out at birth, tracked her father down after 26 years. After living in various countries overseas, they decided to return to New Zealand together – ‘just as we had left together in the 80s’. Their second wedding, in January 2012 – 23 years after their first, was in stark contrast; it was in a registry office in England. “It was no-fuss, no party, no car. We just walked there and it was so emotional, just as you might hope your wedding would be. It was quiet, but beautiful, with just our children and a few close friends.” Today the couple have settled in Whangarei, where Mel spent the first year of her teaching career, and has wonderful memories of Northland. “We bought a lifestyle block and started running our business from there and enjoy every minute of life in Northland. Our girls are here with us and we are well-settled after dashing around the world for a couple of decades.” Reflecting on their journey Mel says: “I don’t regret any of the past happening. If it hadn’t, we might not be where we are today ... happy in Whangarei!” She adds with a twinkle: “Gary was and still is my toy boy.”

Two Weddings on Opposite Sides of the World
When they first met in Australia

Katharina Cox was travelling around Australia with her friend’s partner when she bumped into her future husband from Whangarei. She’d just finished high school in her native Germany and was on a work holiday in 2006 with a friend and her Kiwi partner when her friend had to return to Germany. “So, me and her partner were at a camp ground in Bowen, Queensland, when Chris and his friend rocked up in an old Bedford camper. He had been living and working in Aussie since he was 17 but had had enough of the Gold Coast lifestyle and was travelling up the coast,” she explains. The two hit it off and Katharina (Kat) ended up jumping ship and travelling with them up the coast. The pair were friends for around a month before winding up together. They continued on in Australia for the year, where Chris met Kat’s parents when they arrived to visit and, as Kat’s visa was coming to an end, they decided Chris would join her in Germany. “But first, we stopped over in New Zealand for three weeks so I could meet his family before I whisked him off to the other side of the world,” she laughs. They had been living in Germany several months before discovering they were pregnant with their first son Felix, now ten. Several weeks before his birth, they married in an old castle with only Kat’s immediate family and a couple of friends present which, Kat says, wasn’t very special and with none of Chris’ family present. They spent Felix’ first year in Germany Hash browns. before moving to New Zealand in 2010,

The couple had two more children – Mason, 5, and Spencer, 2, and started their own business repiling and moving houses. However, having now attended kiwi weddings herself, Kat, 32, began to realise what Chris, 34, and his whanau had missed out on. “We always joked about having a wedding at the marae but the aunties were quick to point out the amount of work that would be included. And now that I have a couple of tangis under my belt, I understand! But then Chris suggested early last year, with it being our ten-year anniversary, we should have a party for that, and the planning began from there.

“The aim was to have no one have to do anything on the weekend and we could all just spend time and enjoy everyone’s company at the beach. Our amazing business partner let us use his beach house at Ngahau Bay where we erected a marquee and hired five caravans for our family and friends to spend the weekend with us.” In lieu of a celebrant, Kat’s best friend, whose husband is also best friends with Chris, was the ‘Still do lady’ – a perfect touch, says Kat, and, in a ‘crack-up’ moment, the song Baby Shark, a favourite of the couple’s two-year-old son, was sung, which everyone joined in. A week before the wedding, Kat’s parents flew in from Germany as a surprise, which Chris and Kat’s brother, in New Zealand on a working holiday visa, were in on. “It was amazing having them there and I can say that it was the best day of my life – the whole weekend was; Having all our favourite people in one place, everyone having a good time, celebrating us and the amazing people we have in our lives.” Kat reflects that their December 2018 wedding couldn’t have been any more different to their first. “Our wedding in Germany was very lowkey and it sort of always bugged me a bit, not having had a nice wedding with all our family and friends, which made this one even more special. Finally, we were able to have our day. We organised it all ourselves and made sure we loved every aspect of the weekend and it was us to a tee. “The only thing we haven’t done yet is have a honeymoon, but we’ll get there one day.”

Seven Tips to Make Exercise a Lasting Part of Your Life

Is exercise on your list of goals for this year? Have you been trying to make exercise a regular part of your life but have been struggling with a way to make that happen?
fter all, exercise is one of the easiest and most effective ways of improving your physical and mental health. This includes reducing your risk for serious health problems, easing depression and anxiety, boosting your energy and mood and relieving stress. No matter your age or fitness level, you can use physical activity to help you feel better, look better, and enjoy life more. The key is to change your approach to exercise and think about what you do that helps or, sometimes, hurts your chances of success. Here are seven tips to make it easier to plan, prepare and commit to your workouts: - Plan ahead Your busy schedule means you need to plan and prepare for your workouts ahead of time. Map it out - Work out a timetable for gym days and the workouts you’ll do on those days. Pack up - The night before, pack your bag with everything you need – workout gear, shoes, water bottle, etc. - Give yourself time Establishing an exercise program is not just about having goals or making a plan. You need to invest time before you reap the benefits. This allows you to: Work on your schedule – it takes trial and error to see what works best with your schedule. Learn the exercises – we weren’t born knowing how to exercise. You need the time to learn the moves and practice good form to work the correct muscles.

Build strength and stamina – Your body needs to get accustomed to working out before you can reap the benefits. - Focus on health NOT weight loss Focus on the joys of exercise and movement instead of losing weight. Take pride in your body getting stronger or your new ability to able to exercise longer, even if it’s just in baby steps. Most likely what motivates you runs much deeper than a specific set of numbers on a scale. Identify what it is for you. Maybe you want to have more energy for your children or grandchildren or you want to be in more control of your health whatever is your core motivation - connect to it. As you improve your health and feel better about yourself, any excess body fat will begin to fall off naturally. But the overall improvements that you will be making with your health will transform your entire life for the better. - Avoid stop and start syndrome One great way to kill your confidence is to constantly start and stop your exercise routine. It’s common for people to get psyched up and dive into working out and then drop it altogether when the craziness of life intervenes. But if you start and stop all the time, you are setting yourself up for a never-ending cycle, where you won’t see any progress. Don’t try tackle the world in a day. Think baby steps. Think of what you can do and schedule today even if it’s small increments of time that you eventually build upon. Commit to what you CAN achieve, at least at first.

- Think of how exercise boosts your sense of well-being Sure, exercise is a great disease preventer and can help you live longer, but what you might find more rewarding is to think about all the immediate benefits exercise provides to your well-being. All of us can use exercise today to get more energy, alleviate stress, increase productivity, improve our outlook, sleep better and feel happier - today! Think about what you stand to gain if you work out today. Maybe it’s a sunnier disposition or the satisfaction in knowing you pushed your body. Just give it some thought or better yet, make a list. - Protect the time you have set aside for exercise Resist the urge to neglect exercising because there are things that you decide are ‘more important.’ Don’t let others treat your exercise time as inferior either. Just as you

would protect the time you have set aside for any other appointment, you need to protect the time you have set aside for exercise in whatever way possible. Life happens, but for the most part you can protect this time. - See exercise as an act of self-love Sometimes it’s easier to drop the expectations of exercise, drop the measure of results, and just move your body because you want to feel good! After all, if our intention is to live a meaningful and healthy life, we will make decisions that support this intention and we live with purpose and design. In return we feel good when we see ourselves accomplishing what we set out to do. The more self-love you have for yourself, the better prepared you are for healthy living for the long haul. Even more, you will start to attract people and circumstances to you that will further support your well-being. But don’t wait! Do it TODAY!

It’s the leading cause of blindness yet most of us don’t understand what it is or how to prevent it. WHAT IS MACULAR DEGENERATION (MD)?
The macula is the central part of the retina, the light sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. The retina processes all visual images. It is responsible for your ability to read, recognise faces, drive and see colours clearly. You are reading this using your macula. Macular Degeneration (MD) causes progressive loss of central vision but peripheral vision is not affected.
WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF MD?
There are two types of MD, dry and wet. Dry MD is more common than wet and results in a gradual loss of central vision. Dry MD may progress to the wet for mover time. Dry MD is generally thought of in 3 stages. The early stage is characterized by the presence of drusen. These are small yellow deposits that buildup under the retina,and are easily detectable during an eye examination. Vision is usually unaffected. Intermediate dry MD is characterized by one or more large drusen that commonly result in blurred vision and a need for more light to read. Vision maybe mildly distorted and an early central blind spot (scotoma) may develop. Advanced dry MD, or geographic atrophy, occurs when there is significant loss of retinal pigment and results in a larger central scotoma. This makes reading almost impossible and requires people to rely on their peripheral vision that remains intact. Wet MD is characterised by a sudden and severe loss of vision caused by abnormal blood vessels growing under the retina. Immediate medical treatment of wet MD is essential if symptoms occur.
STARGARDT DISEASE
While Macular Degeneration is normally associated with ageing eyes, an inherited form known as Stargardt’s disease can affect children and young adults. Stargardt disease is a bilateral inherited retina ldystrophy usually affecting the central retina, the macula, resulting in a deterioration of the central vision.
WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS?
MD is thought to be caused by genetic and environmental factors. People over the age of 50 years are at risk. If you smoke or have a family history of MD, your risk of developing the disease is much greater. Key symptoms may include one or more of the following: • Difficulty with reading or any other activity that requires fine vision. • Distortion,where straight lines appear wavy or bent. • Distinguishing faces becomes a problem. • Dark patches or empty spaces appear in the centre of your vision. If you experience any of these symptoms contact your eye care specialist immediately.
MACULAR DEGENERATION EYE HEALTH CHECKLIST
• Have your eyes tested and make sure the macula is checked. • Don’t smoke. • Keep a healthy lifestyle, control your weight and exercise regularly. • Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet. Limit your intake of fats, eat fish two or three times a week,eat dark green leafy vegetables and fresh fruit daily and a handful of nuts a week. • In consultation with your doctor, consider taking a zinc and antioxidant supplement. • Provide adequate protection for your eyes from sunlight exposure, especially when young.
NUTRITION
A range of nutrients are important for good macular health. If your diet is lacking these you should consider taking a supplement: • Lutein and zeaxanthin: These are present in high concentrations in a healthy macula. They are found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach, silver beet and kale. They are also present in peas, pumpkin, brussel sprouts, broccoli, corn and beans. • Omega3: All fish and shellfish contain omega-3 but higher concentrations are found in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, anchovies, trout, herring, sardines and tuna. • Other nutrients: Your diet should include other nutrients that support good macular health. These include zinc (oysters,nuts,legumes);vitamin E(nuts,whole grains);vitamin C (citrus,berries,tomatoes;and selenium(nuts—especially Brazil nuts).

Make a special page with a link in your email that announces the winner on your website. 3. Because they have gone to your website you can retarget them with a special FB advert. And hopefully they signed up to your newsletter. 4. After you announce the winner, you can then follow them up again with a new invitation to join your database. Expos are hard work on the day, but the real work is keeping the relationships alive and going. Because I still now, after two years, have clients who remember meeting me at my expo stand.

Fishing tips & tales with John Vowless
T
he inner Whangarei harbour is fishing very well at present. Snapper catches are more consistent and, while there are still a few undersize fish, many anglers are releasing all snapper under 35cm and are still getting limit catches of good-sized fish. A few kahawai and kingfish are also being caught. Around Limestone Island and across to Rat Island is fishing well; the edges of the sandbanks with long traces on incoming tides, drifting with the current in the channels using straylines or softbaits, casting poppers around channel markers for kingi’s and casting straylined baits amongst the mangroves up in the tidal creeks. All these areas and methods are getting good results and this should continue for a month or two. Fishing outside the harbours has been a bit limited by the wind, but those getting out are catching good snapper, kingis and kahawai at the Chicks and Hen Islands. My neighbour, Harmen, was crewing, delivering a yacht and sailed on the outside of the Hen and Chicks to take advantage of a favourable wind and, towing lures at daybreak, caught a good-sized blue fin tuna and a very large mackerel - great eating.
Most of the Norths harbours will be fishing well at the moment. On the west coast, shore surfcasting at Mitimiti has been good for kahawai and occasional good snapper and the Whangape Harbour is similar and has had good kingi livebaiting at the entrance. Game fishing has been a bit slow; water colour and temperature is good but wind has been a limiting factor, a bit less wind will very likely result in more fish being taken. Reefy areas in 45 or more metres are providing terakihi, golden snapper and pink maomao and, if you go well out on a nice calm day, those succulent blue nose are being caught to good size. Scallops have come under a lot of pressure lately and are starting to get a little harder to find and experienced divers are getting a few good crayfish. We should have plenty of good weather for a while yet, and a bit less wind will make fishing outside more viable and comfortable. However, our northern harbours are worth learning as they can provide very good snapper, kahawai and kingfish and, once learned, are exciting rewarding places to fish. Tight lines.

Hot Rods and Custom Cars meet Wearable Art at Rev Up Whangarei 2019 BY TIM ROBINSON

hat on earth do classic cars and bikes have to do with wearable art, you might ask? At first glance, it does seem a bit of a stretch to connect them! But when you include a wearable arts vehicle-themed category in the 2019 Rev Up Whangarei show, it suddenly makes perfect sense. The Repco Rev Up Whangarei Event on April 27 is the third year the show has been held, and it’s going to be better than ever, with more vehicles on display, plus Bikes & Trikes, more entertainment and fabulous prizes.
Open to the public, spectators’ entry is free. However, club members will have gold coin donation buckets floating around the event, with all proceeds going direct to Whangarei Youth Space. Rev Up Whangarei coordinator David Seymour says the event is coming together well. The committee is very appreciative of the support from a range of sponsors, along with the encouragement to run the event from the CBD retailers. The event will see over 300 cool classic cars, hot rods and a great assortment of bikes and trikes gathered in the Whangarei CBD, where the public can get up close and admire the hours and hours of work that owners have spent renewing and maintaining their amazing vehicles. This year has seen a new category added; wearable art, inspired by the vehicles in the event. The Savvy team often review Whangarei eateries in the evening hours but today we headed off to Treat Cakes and Pastries for morning tea. The Treat space is in the old Blue Revolution shop in The Strand. It has been designed by the owners to be used in multiple ways from birthday parties to cake decorating workshops and corporate team building and high teas. The café was quite busy when we arrived and, although there’s not a huge amount of seating, there are options with café tables, a recycled couch and macrocarpa window bar leaners. The atmosphere is casual and relaxing and we chose a corner table with a glimpse of the Treat open kitchen with cake maker Krystal finishing off a wedding cake. The cabinets are rich and plentiful with all pastries made on site. The sweets selection is something quite special with a huge variety of mouth-watering delectable treats. A decadent black forest cake was lovely and moist with a perfect balance of cream cherries, berries and chocolate. We also tried Treat’s salted caramel donut which was an old school variety; soft and fresh, slightly yeasty with plenty of flavour and a big shot of salted caramel dripping off the custard. It’s not all sweet treats though! The Treat sausage roll is a back-to-basics example with an actual real pork sausage wrapped into
puff pastry. It was more sausage than pastry. Treat also have a duo of fresh healthy salads and great fresh filled roll choices that are baked each morning. There are healthy smoothie options too - their green smoothie was delicious and filling. To accompany the food, we couldn’t resist trying a ginger lemon tea, which was fragrant and refreshing. Barista, Yoshimis flat white was lovely with great flavour from the Vittoria beans. We loved the look of Treat and their genuine service lead by owner Rob, was great.

urable, high-quality toilets, vanities, showers, basins, taps and towel rails don’t come cheap, and if you’re not careful it’s easy to blow the budget. But one New Zealand bathroom manufacturer is bucking the trend. Millen offers beautiful, designer bathroom products for a fraction of the cost of some of the bigger players, and they’re committed to helping more Kiwis create beautiful bathrooms without spending too much money. Joshua Lee (general manager of Millen) gives an example of what sort of savings people can expect at Millen. “I was at a trade show and saw a shower by another company on sale for $750. We had the same shower in store for $650. People need to know that we can provide a much cheaper option without compromising on quality.” Millen was started in New Zealand by Freddy Chen in 2000 and since then the company has gone from strength to strength. The majority of the bathroom products are all designed by Chen in New Zealand and manufactured in China at a factory owned by the company. They also do all the distribution themselves, which cuts out the middle man

While people may be fooled by expensive brands with Italian names, in reality all these bathroom products are made in China. Millen products are of equal quality and sell at a fraction of the cost. One of Millen’s exclusive products (developed by Chen) is a stainless-steel tray that can be fitted under the base of the shower, with tiles affixed to the top. This prevents water from leaking into the floor underneath. “If you have a shower upstairs the water can sometimes seep through the tiles into the floor below,” says Lee. “This tray is an excellent way of preventing this from happening.” These can also be made to fit into the wall recesses where the shampoo and soap is stored within the shower. Towel rails are one of the most popular items sold through Millen and represent excellent value for money compared with

veryone knows eating cheese before bed equals terrible dreams, right? If you’re struggling for some shuteye, you count sheep … don’t you? When it comes to getting quality sleep, not all advice is good advice – and not all bad advice is actually true. Check out some of the most common sleep myths below. You might be surprised!
Napping is good Everyone has those days when you just need a quick nap on the sofa. Unfortunately, if repeated too often these power naps can be troublesome for your body. Short snoozes reduce your ability to get a good night’s rest, and a study by the National Sleep Foundation showed napping also triggered inflammation in the body, which can have considerable health implications over time. In any case, you don’t need a study to tell you it’s common to wake up feeling worse! Counting sheep helps you get to sleep Despite what you might’ve been told as a child, counting sheep can actually delay getting to sleep. It’s better to steady your breathing and visualise a relaxing scene like lying on the beach or taking a warm bath. You can catch up on sleep over the weekend If you’ve had a hectic week with little sleep, spending extra hours in bed to pay off your ‘sleep debt’ can be tempting. But sleeping until noon lessens the chance
of you falling asleep at your usual bedtime – setting up a new, unbalanced sleep cycle for the week to come. Exercising in the morning is one of the best ways to improve your sleep quality. It’s fine to drink caffeine before bed Sure, there’s coffee on restaurant menus – but that doesn’t mean it’s a great idea to order it. Caffeine interferes with your body long after you’ve drunk it and drinking coffee or Coke – especially close to bedtime – can really affect your quality of sleep. Limit your caffeine intake by the early afternoon to ensure you fall asleep easily. Being warm is good for a blissful night’s sleep Cosying up in a pair of pyjamas might make you feel sleepy – but beware of overheating, as that can result in a disrupted sleep. Having a bath, then allowing your body to cool right down can be a good way to ensure a restful night. Eating cheese gives you nightmares We’ve all been told time and time again eating dairy before bed can result in intense nightmares … but this is actually untrue. We wouldn’t recommend loading up on the cheese right before you hit the hay – overfill your stomach up with anything and it’s hard to sleep – but if cravings persist, a slice or two won’t hurt. One thing that isn’t a myth is the importance of sleeping in a bed that matches your body’s needs – and replacing your bed every 7-10 years.

What, Summer Planting, are you Crazy?

L
ong hot humid days and nights are not usually the optimum conditions to be planting (for us, or some plants), but many plants respond well and put on growth when they get their roots out of pots and into some cool moist soil. The key is knowing your soil and water or, more precisely, planting in a way that conserves water in the soil.
Sit plant in the hole at a height level with the soil surface. Back fill with the remaining soil. If you are planting on a slope, it is a good idea to mound some remaining soil on the lower side to make a ‘well’.
Steps for successful summer planting. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, fill with water and let it soak in. Immerse your plant in a bucket of water in its pot to ensure the root ball is thoroughly wet, soak till air bubbles stop coming from the root area. In the bottom of the hole, when the water has drained away, mix expanded/presoaked water storage crystals, 50:50 soil and compost, and ‘The Gardener’ slow release fertilizer tablets. In soils that are clay, mix in gypsum with the remaining soil.
Hibiscus Then your water doesn’t drain away and when you get those occasional summer down-pours, it means the water soaks in around the plant and doesn’t just run straight down the slope. Finally, spread mulch 80-100mm thick around your plant, keeping it away from the trunk, and water your plants in well. Remember to keep well-watered in hot dry weather, usually several times a week.

Try the vigorous, hardy Hibiscus rosa-sinensis with a striking red flower as a hedge or screen. • Murraya paniculate - nothing beats the scent of this shrub on a hot, balmy evening. Lovely foliage and also makes a great hedge or screen. • Callistemon ‘Red Cluster’ - one of the smaller growing bottle brush growing to 2m, flowers providing nectar for birds. • Succulents - the sort of plants you can have in pots and not worry about when you go away on holiday. The plant and leave alone type, our grannies loved them for a reason. Plenty here to choose from at Alter-Natives.
