MAY 2017
contents E
very new stage of family life, I find myself reminiscing about the way things were. One door closes and another opens and it will never quite be the same again. Life can get too busy to write details in Plunket books, to acknowledge the little moments and to stop to smell the pages of that chapter. When we received our updated family photos recently, they brought tears to my eyes. I could feel the atmosphere, the dynamics and the love. They showed me that no matter how crazy you think you are, how dysfunctional life can be with three kids and a loyal dog, that the mental dinner rush is more like a beautiful part of family life but often buried in busyness... forever. This issue, we talk to local Mums and their children, celebrating this special day. This is life; this is us. Happy Mother’s Day readers,

OUR PEOPLE
Northlanders share their Mother’s Day
Teresa Holtz & Zev Kaka
T
Zev Kaka & Teresa Holtz
FABRICS TO BEAUTIFY YOUR HOME
he bond between a mother and son is a treasured one and speaking to Teresa Holtz (53), and Zev Kaka (29), Northland’s award-winning cheesemaker, their relationship is no different. Mother’s Day conjures up mixed feelings for some people, for this Mother and son however, it represents being chosen Teresa says. “At the same time, blessed and so very much privileged. The world and all things in it are treasures, but the most treasured of all is my mother,” she says. For son Zev, it makes him think about how grateful and thankful he is to have a mother who loves him unconditionally and supports him in whatever he does. This ongoing support has seen Zev go far, always remembering this mother’s words on the importance of being polite, respectful and using his manners. When asked how the family usually spend Mother’s Day, Zev’s mother says she will lie in her bed and reminisce of not one, but all three of her babies and a great nephew who she raised from nine months old. “I think about their special first birthdays where our family tradition was that I would throw them up into the air, in their birthday suits. The night before I would do all the baking and
set the table, so everything was ready. Four precious gifts.” “I also get Mother’s Day calls or drop-ins,” she says, “I send texts out to my daughter and my two daughters-in-law, who have blessed me with my moko.” Zev will usually send Mum a happy mother’s day text in the morning saying how much he loves her then stop in during the day and give her a kiss and a cuddle. He remembers the fond memories of growing up and learning how to bake a chocolate cake with his mum, then getting to lick the spoon and bowl afterwards. Teresa’s fondest memory with her Mum is having a salad lunch every Friday together at Tiffany’s on her day off. The best piece of advice she remembers, is to never leave home without a clean pair of ‘undy pun’ she giggles. That, and to be good. Something this local family feels strongly about is that you never embarrass your child. “It would kill his spirit and could change the beautiful and special individual that he is, Teresa says. Zev agrees, “There are no embarrassing moments with my Mum, none”. I’ve never been embarrassed by my mum,” he smiles.

Occupation/ Hobbies:
Names & Age
I reboot with a riveting novel or a wintery beach walk. I love music, and our extended family has a wee bit of a tradition of Cèilidh Dancing (Gaelic folk-dancing and music) at our large (and
Mum: Angela Williams, 53 Daughter: Trish Ford, 30
getting larger!) get-togethers. I play guitar, and enjoy creating/puttering around with multimedia artworks. But give me an hour on my own and a book is my blob-device of choice. I
Occupation:
have homeschooled our 6 kids – this is my last year of homeschooling, so the end of an era is in sight. I am an Early Childhood Educator 4 days a week (through PORSE) for a darling little 1 year-old. I am Oma (Grandma) to 8 beautiful grandies aged 3 months to 6 years, and spend a lot of time interacting with and babysitting our delightful tribe of littlies!
What does Mother’s Day mean to you? No cooking! Mushy words in homemade cards. I never really think of myself as a person who needs much affirmation, until Mother’s Day comes along and my heart soaks up every little bit of flattery!
How do you spend your Mother’s Day usually? A big bacony breakfast is made for me, then a beach walk and picnic lunch if I can wrangle it! Definitely lots of visitors and grandies popping in and out, or perhaps a big family potluck dinner…
What was the best piece of advice your mother gave you? “Do the next best thing.” (The past can’t be changed. Lift your head, and keep moving forward!) And: “Buy a mauli.”
Most embarrassing mother moment? While visiting with friends, I once followed after our 2 toddlers, picking up raisins they had dropped throughout our friend’s immaculate house. Slowly the suspicion dawned that my palm may NOT be full of raisins... Yes, one of our disgusting little darlings had liberally decorated my dear friend’s home with their feral little droppings.
Fondest memory you have with your Mother?
I have very tender childhood memories of Mum stroking my hair as she sang us soothing Dutch and English lullabies and prayers at bedtime. As an adult, I relish the raucous hilarity of girlie get-togethers with my mum and my beautiful, witty sisters!
Proudest moment?
Mum: Electrologist Daughter: Beauty Therapist & Fitness Instructor
What does Mother’s Day mean to you? Mum: To me it means pushing everything in our lives aside and focusing on quality time together. Daughter: It’s a day to appreciate what Mum means to me and all the hard work, sacrifices and love she has put in to us kids. Being a Mother myself now has made me more aware of how tricky it has been to be a working mum.
How do you spend your Mother’s Day usually? Mum: I’m lucky to spend it with my own fantastic mum and celebrating my Grandson’s birthday. Daughter: My son’s birthday party usually falls on the same day so we often have his party and little treats for the mummies.
What was the best piece of advice your mother gave you? Mum: Treat other people as you expect to be treated. Daughter: There is always room for another glass of wine
Most embarrassing mother moment? Mum: I was in a fitting room getting changed and had Trish aged 4 in there with me, as I was disrobing my darling daughter yells “ EW YUCK!” at the sight of my glorious figure. Next on my shopping list was a gym membership. Daughter: The night before school photos my mum decided she would give my fringe “a little trim” ..trim… trim… I was left with half an inch of Fringe. There was also a time she tried to bleach my hair and it turned orange. Moral of the story, stick to your day job and pay the professionals!
My heart swells when I see or hear one of our kids defend or praise one of their siblings. That just never gets old. Graduations are awesome, and weddings too, and it is precious seeing your children at their best as you witness some inspired parenting moments between them and their own little ones. Grandmothering is a beautiful thing!
Favourite Quote: There’s something for every occasion in ‘The Princess Bride’ by William Goldman: For squabbling siblings: “No more RHYMES now! I MEAN it!” For the gloater (or a gloatable moment): “Inconthievable!” The ‘Job Half Done’ lecture: “And you think a little THUMB wiggle is supposed to make me HAPPY?” Pre-empt those sticky/awkward questions with: “And remember- be honest…”
Fondest memory you have with your Mother? Mum: There are too many to pick from, each time we see each other is special. She is the biggest jewel in the jewellery box. Daughter: Our recent trip to Christchurch was fabulous, getting to hangout with my Mum and Granny. Shopping, exploring and getting pampered was a nice way to enjoy each other’s company and make new memories together.

I
Philippa opened her door to a local photographer one busy family evening and this is the story it tells...
Behind the scenes of our editor
have to admit, my stomach did turn inside out at the thought of a photographer capturing our 5PM witching hour. However, life is not staged and our memories needn’t be either, right? Life sweeps through so quickly for each of us that we often miss these precious moments and they receive no glory for being the everyday, beautiful parts of life. This is the gold. The right here, right now. The family unit, the way that we all interact and love each other as chaotic as it can be. These behind the scenes everyday life moments are soon lost. They will be sorely missed when the walls of this home are sadly quiet once more. Sometimes, you need to be reminded through the lens of a camera.

An open letter to my kids this Mother’s Day
We never plan how being a mother is going to look
BY PHILIPPA MANNAGH
Don’t hurry it all away. Take it from me, I was once your age, believe it or not. I wanted to be older than I was. I wanted to grow up fast. Being an adult seemed so much better. I wish however, that I had listened to my mummy. She told me to slow down, to wait. I remember her face when I told her I had shaved my legs one day. I was desperate for friends and she told me not to cry. I didn’t listen to her of course and I was heartbroken that I didn’t have hundreds. One day when I did, I didn’t know what to do with them all and realised that a few good friends are far more important. I wish I had believed I was pretty. You are the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Believe it. Believe in yourself and try to get to know who you are. Be brave. Sometimes we have to do things in our lives that make us uncomfortable, but if it will help us, we need to find our inner strength. Find your light. Believe in something higher than yourself. Laugh. Even when times get hard, laugh as much as you can, especially at yourself. Know that mum and dad have your

best interests at heart. We don’t love to growl. We do so because we love you so much it hurts. We’re so proud of you and who you are becoming. Sometimes I look at you and I still see my little babies. Other times I see the makings of young adults ready to blossom. I am in awe at what we created and am honoured to be placed here as YOUR mum. Even if sometimes you wish I wasn’t. Know that you are deeply and passionately loved. That I would throw myself under a bus for you without second thought. I will always want to keep you safe. As you grow, this will become harder for me to do. You will have to draw upon some of the lessons we have taught you and hopefully these are set deeply into your lives now. Trust others, but also be cautious. Think before you speak. Use your head. Sometimes your feelings will lie to you. Be wise. Don’t rush into things. Have fun. Choose good friends who lift you up and believe in you. Don’t try to be anyone else. You are the only you there is…. and YOU are irreplaceable.
“Muuuuuuum”? Called out in the supermarket, 8 women’s heads swivel immediately looking for their offspring calling that word in that tone! It’s the tone passed down without training for generations. I used it. All my tama-freakies use it. They use it when they want something, or when they need your help. Mums, Mothers or Mama’s are the best humans on the planet at anticipating the needs of those closest to them. Mother’s Day is the day we celebrate the “fabulousness” of being a mother. You know the bright advertising campaigns like the Briscoes lady that portray mums to be all clean, almost gleaming, is not the reality faced by most mums. I’m a mum to three awesome kids, freshly divorced and going through that hideous week on, week off thing that I watched girlfriends go through and thought “you poor bugger”. I often hope I look clean, lovely and confident as I deal with the weight of being a mum. Last week was kind of normal for my stage in life I reflect. I don’t want to get fat because I’m too vane. So, I’m trying to love Crossfit and go most mornings. Its working in that I’ve not got any fatter, I’m soo much stronger and driven, but not taller yet or blonder. Last week was one of those weeks with a late night meeting out of town, two night classes and the kids arriving back to me on Friday afternoon. By Thursday morning after the gym I wanted a reward. I rocked into Body Fuel for a treat and grabbed one of their cookies which is like breakfast in a cookie - one for a girlfriend at work and
one for myself. My girlfriend is a young mum to three young kids. One is still in nappies and mum is an important business woman. I grabbed her cookie thinking how she rushes around in the morning. Imagining her getting her kids up, lunch boxes sorted, shoes, in the car, then the courier across town and the last drop off - that pretty blue eyed baby. She’s also a solo parent. I wrote her a note saying: “I see you rushing in the morning with all your tama-freakies. Work is soo much easier than being a mum!” We never plan how being a mother is going to look. We get great at making-it-up and working it out and working on making the role big, brilliant and fabulous. It doesn’t matter what I do during the day but when I have my kids I work on making sure that I’m their legend in the kitchen, in our home, in their lives and with anything that matters to them. No mum ever plans to be a mother that gets divorced or a solo parent. It’s hard work being the “A+ Mother-student”. I’m lucky now in that my lovely partner Jason likes to buy me enormous diamonds, adores my kids and is an amazing co-parent. Life is looking grand! So while we are all looking glamorous and clean like Katy Perry in our minds this Mother’s Day. Take a moment to recognise the incredible ability you have as a “Muuuuuuum”? to anticipate the needs of the humans you made and celebrate your train-of-awesome in your own style. You’re doing fine. Now go put on a bright shirt and stand in a sunbeam and take a selfie -you’ll look brighter.

K
nitwear has come a long way since that little pair of finely gauged Northlanders love Egyptian socks were knitwear. Away from first unearthed in work we’re casual. the 11th Century. Skinny pants and ankle No longer are the boots topped with our masses spinning yarn favourite sweater just plucked from thorn bushes and dyed with scream comfort onion skins. Knitwear is a constant evolution. If you’re a 21st Century Adidas fan you could be wearing a sport to street perfectly contoured, lighter than light merino sweater, using state of the art engineering and innovative body scanning in a matter of hours with not a seam in sight. 2017 autumn trends for knitwear emphasise light weight fluffy garments, loaded with volume, yet soft, that envelop the wearer. The key players in creating these trends are animal hair combinations of rabbit, merino, cashmere, possum and lamb’s wool. The Winterless North is an unpredictable species, therefore animal hair combination garments determine the backbone of our winter range, due to its flexibility to accommodate the diverse temperatures that are flung at us. Its light weight handle allows for that important pre-winter layering, where cooler mornings succumb to the midday highs. We need to be able to peel off the layers and add them back as the afternoon progresses. Luckily, Northlanders love knitwear. Away from work we’re casual. Skinny pants and ankle boots topped with our favourite sweater just scream comfort. Oversized, over skinny is still an absolute trend setter and a real favourite with Cheryl and I. Culottes are a persistent inclusion in the latest fashion scene, demanding shorter style tops and jumpers to balance the overall look. Throw over a Zaffina leather bomber, a Sabatini merino coat (your wearable art piece), a long line cardi, or a grunged down reversible puffer jacket and become a ‘style’ setter for winter. Winter is always a short sharp season, arriving in store in February in the heat of summer, but only really required after July at the same time chain store fashion gurus dictate ‘season over’ and start hauling in summer. Our advice to you is shop now, even when the weather suggests otherwise. It will get cold and stock is finite, sizes are disappearing as we write and when it truly feels like winter – we will have a shop full of spring – believe us. Otherwise, check the barbed wire fences for that precious tangle of wool and yes, you can produce your own. Maybe Adidas could lend you their body scanner.
Living beyond the anger distraction
I
’m so happy to be back with you all after an amazing two-year stint in Japan! Today I want to talk about some of the distractions in our lives that keep us from creating and having everything we know is possible! Take a moment to presence yourself with some of your distractions – what are they? What do you use to distract you from everything that would give you total freedom? What keeps you stuck and feeling like you are unable to move beyond your distractions? In my awareness – these are some of the big distractions in life: anger rage fury and hate, blame shame guilt and regret, addictive compulsive obsessive perverted points of view, fear and doubt just to name a few. Oh wait - business and relationship are right up there as well! Let’s have a look at anger since I can’t address all of them today. What triggers your anger? Have you ever opened it up and unpacked it to find out where it’s coming from? If you grew up around people who constantly triggered you to react and you do it every time, then you may have learnt this behaviour. Reaction is where ‘X’ occurs and you do ‘Y’ whether you want to or not.
BY SHARON GIBSON LIFE AND STYLE COACH
Most of anger is designed to take you out of your capacity to act – which is having total freedom to choose and be something different. People who come at you with anger are compromising and invalidating you and your point of view, with their presence and their anger so they can control and manipulate you with their desired outcome. When anger is done from a place of explosion, if it’s you doing it; you push yourself out of existence and into a place of trying to control others. Much of that force goes against your body and keeps you in a constant state of adrenalin pump and long term that has a destructive effect on your body. It keeps you in a constant state of reaction. The value of disestablishing anger; our example for today, is recognising that it is designed to take you out of being present and having a look at what is really going on in your life. What is really going on for you in your life? All things can change when there is a willingness to tap into your innate strength. Action or reaction? The choice is yours! Break the mould.

Three poncho styles for a fashionable winter: get the look!
FASHION
WITH BERNADETTE NORMAN
Who doesn’t love a cosy, warm, relaxed poncho? With their forgiving, flattering lines and their funky look, the traditional poncho has become a staple winter wardrobe item from catwalks to sidewalks. We’re loving the new ponchos coming our way this winter, and have gathered three of our top sellers to show you what’s trending, and how you can get the best look from each poncho style.
Roll up, roll up the roll-neck asymmetrical poncho Who wants to get chills in the winter wind? Not us! These roll-neck ponchos leave nothing to chance, with deliciously soft high necklines to keep you toasty warm while out in the winter weather. But don’t worry! We’re not talking skivvy-necks here. These gorgeous cold-weather classics have a gentle, feminine roll at the neckline, guaranteed to warm without that claustrophobic feel, with flattering asymmetrical lines. We love the simplicity of roll-neck ponchos – but the best part? The flattering lines of the asymmetrical hems! Team these beauties with a shorter length skirt and leggings or winter stockings partnered with ankle boots.
Street savvy the hooded zip poncho
Soft knit wide neck poncho Think flirty, think feminine, think flowing and soft, and a relaxed, open, wide-neck style. We love it for its romantic, flowing lines and gloriously soft texture – this poncho gives you the freedom to feel beautiful while wearing comfy jeans and flats underneath! So try out a poncho today, go and try one of these poncho styles, and be pleasantly surprised by how flattering and stylish you can look. Pop it on over jeans, smart trousers, or dresses, it will fit into your wardrobe seamlessly.
Best described as a hoody/poncho fusion piece, The Hooded Zip Poncho creates an effortless statement no matter how it’s worn. Created from a luxuriously soft cashmere mix fabric, this poncho blends the best of both worlds – look street-smart and chic all at once! If you’re wanting to get the most from this look, we recommend teaming it with a pair of casual/ smart jean, and a tighter fitting under-layer. To finish off the look, go for a pair of fun, relaxed casual flats.

Come and see the friendly team at their new (bigger & better) premises on Cameron Street next to Dickens Inn!
fter 25 years surrounded by feet, Sandi Oxenham, owner of Santreno Shoes, still loves her footwear. So much so, that the business is making a move this May, from the 100 year old shop to something newer, bigger and brighter at 69 Cameron Street. Santreno Shoes stock a large range of men’s and women’s footwear with 90% of their range being made of quality leather. This is very important as shoes made of leather last longer, are more comfortable and breathable. There will now be plenty of room to stock the beautiful handbags, umbrellas for those rainy days and of course plenty of short boots that are very popular this season, with lots of golds and silver showing through. Together with husband Trent, the owners believe the key to being successful in the retail world today is listening to your customer and offering great service. “This is very important when it comes to footwear as they need be the correct fit and the size needs to be right. This is something that can only be done in store with a qualified footwear fitter. We have over 80 years of footwear expertise between us all which is invaluable. Buying shoes on line can be a very hit and miss experience and a costly one if the fit isn’t right,” she says. The couple’s impressive 25 years in business begins back when Sandi’s parents started Payless Shoes, with Sandi and her husband Trent buying the business off them 16 years ago. Their success could also be found in their warm attitude to customer service, sharing that they feel so lucky because they get let into people’s lives. “Be it matching shoes to go with that beautiful dress for your daughter’s wedding or professional courts for that job interview but at times we also share sadness with our customers who need shoes for a funeral.” And of course there is that pair of shoes, “I just can’t live without” and they are always fun. It’s not just a passion for shoes Sandi says, but a passion for people as well.

tattoo that best suits you, take a skin analysis to ensure the right pigment (ink) colour is chosen for your skin and hair tones. You will fill out a consent and release form, take before and after photos, template on your new brows using measurements guided by your face shape and skull structure (making your brows 100% your own) and of course tattooing on your new brows.
Location:
Who is it best suited to?
I have recently taken up residency in a beautiful little salon by the name of RAOR. Raor is a Beauty and Fitness studio catering to men and woman of all ages. Raor Beauty provides services such as waxing, brow shaping and tinting, spray tanning and massage, while Raor Fitness offers daily boot camp style circuit training and boxing classes six days a week. You can find us at 575 Kamo Rd, Kamo.
Brow tattooing is best suited for anyone, male or female, between the ages of 18 - 100! While there are a few restrictions, anyone with naturally full brows to older women with no brows at all are great candidates! I just want to touch on those restrictions briefly, I would not recommend nor will I conduct cosmetic tattooing for or on those who are pregnant, breastfeeding, currently receiving chemo, taking blood-thinning medications or are on acne medications such as Roaccutane. There are also other factors that clients need to be aware of or take into consideration before having their brows tattooed, which I will gladly go through with you at a free consultation on a day and time that is most convenient.
Business:
Qualifications: While I am a woman of many talents, I am certified in Nail Technolgy, Cert III Beauty Therapy, Spray Tanning, Teeth Whitening, Infection Control. More importantly and most recently, in Feather Touch Microblade Tattoo 2015 by the Australian Cosmetic Tattoo College and Cosmetic Brow Tattooing by Machine 2017 by Covet Brows Auckland.
How long have you been in business? As I’m still a “Newbie” to Whangarei, I have only been in business here for a few short months. I was, however, working for myself from home and based in a hairdressing salon in Brisbane for a little over three years before moving to my now forever home.
What are your services at BTW Beauty Room? Before branching out to Raor Beauty & Fitness, I offered a range of beauty services from BTW Beauty Room. Now that I’ve settled into an already well-established beauty salon, I will be concentrating solely on cosmetic brow tattooing which luckily for me, is my absolute passion and new-found love. There are few different brow trends at the moment, BTW Brows offers four of them including, Feather Touch Brows, Powder Brows, Ombre Brows and Combination Brows which are a mixture of hair stroke and shading.
What is eyebrow tattooing? Eyebrow tattooing is a semi-permanent makeup solution that has been around for hundreds of years dating back to Cleopatra and Queen Nefertiti. More recently, brow feathering and powder brows have become extremely popular for many of us with sparse, patchy, thin, overplucked brows looking for a quick fix, time reducing step in our morning routines. Brow tattooing will also help to amend lopsided and uneven brows that have been plaguing us all since before we can remember!
Does it hurt? During my time as a cosmetic tattooist, I have learned that the experience is totally different for everyone. For one it may be completely relaxing and 100% pain-free that they doze off on the table, while for the other it could be slightly uncomfortable and mildly unpleasant. Having said that, I do use a very strong topical anaesthetic gel which is applied after the first pass over each brow, completely numbing the entire area, preventing swelling and stopping excessive bleeding. For me, I would describe the feeling as a sharp scratch or like that of tweezing a whole bunch of hairs at once. Not painful, just a tiny discomfort for a few minutes.
How long does it take?
What’s your favourite part of the job? My absolute favourite part of my job is the end result. I LOVE seeing clients reactions and knowing that I’ve made someone feel so much about themselves. I love the confidence boost a fresh pair of brows gives you and the way it opens the eyes and frames the face. I love the convenience brow tattooing can offer. It can quite literally cut your morning makeup routine in half and alleviate the stress of ‘accidentally rubbing an eyebrow off’ during the day. They are smudge proof, sweat proof and waterproof but still have a very natural appearance making them the perfect edition to your everyday look.
What do you enjoy outside work? As a mother of 3 soon to be 4, I enjoy all the things any other Mum does. Sports on a Saturday morning, family BBQs in the summer on Sundays and spending time with the kids at the beach. Movies, chocolate, relaxing, quiet time and a lazy bourbon now and then, (when I’m not pregnant of course!) I enjoy stalking other brow artists online to see how and where I can improve my skills and pick up any tips or tricks of the trade along the way. I’m always interested in learning more and bettering my technique and will hopefully soon be able to master Lip and Eyeliner tattooing as well.
Any further comments? At BTW Brows, my aim is to please and I know that costs can sometimes hinder being able to access services such as these for many people. I have recently begun offering payments plans for those who wish to lay by their brow treatment before their appointment. Four to six-week options are available and we can tailor them to suit any budget. If you’re still unsure about whether or not brow tattooing is right for you, I suggest popping into the salon for a free consultation with me or having a scroll through my Facebook page or Instagram. You can find me on Facebook by searching BTW Beauty Room in the search bar or on Instagram by searching btw_cosmetic_brows. Please also refer to my page or message me with any enquiries about prices and payment plans. To make a booking with me, you can book instantly online by visiting the Facebook page and clicking BOOK NOW at the top.Alternatively, you can text or phone me on 0210500497. ou’ve heard of the famed, glamorous blonde bombshell. In the boardroom you may have been in the presence of a power blonde. You’ve even seen the casually-fun California blonde on the big and small screens or glimpsed them at the beach. More and more often women are choosing to be blonde – globally about 46% of women who colour their hair choose to go blonde (StatisticBrain.com). When you think about it, blondes make quite the commitment. What with the roots, the touch-ups, the toning, the damage, and the dulling, going blonde – and staying fresh-out-of-the-chair blonde – is a highmaintenance mission. No wonder they’re clamouring for products to protect their investment. Joico Blonde Life™ is a brightening system just for blondes Joico Blonde Life gives you the royal treatment at home with a trio of intensely nurturing, sulfate-free formulas specially formulated to combat the dreaded “B’s” (a.k.a. brassiness, brittleness and breakage) many blondes face

SCHOOL BALL
School Ball – Top Tips
Can I harm my natural nails by wearing acrylic nails? Acrylic nails aren't likely to harm your natural nails unless you rip them off. That's why it is important to get them done by a qualified technician who can give you the best care. Always get acrylics soaked off when you want to remove them.
Is there something different I can do with my nails rather than a French manicure? Can I go to the school ball straight after the eyeworks are done?
There are many different things you can have on your nails, such as coloured tips or a bit of art work. The ideas are unlimited. It just depends on how adventurous you are!
It is always best to have treatments, such as eyebrow shaping and waxing, done the day before an event, so you can give the skin around your eyes time to settle down. If your timeframe won’t allow for this, simply apply a tinted moisturiser around the eye area just before putting on your makeup. The redness should calm down in one to two hours.
How do spray tans work and can I get one if I have sensitive skin?
Can I have colour service if I have sensitive scalp? Try a no-ammonia, precision permanent haircolour that maximises high-definition colour results with minimum stress to the hair's cuticle for outstanding shine.
A spray tan will give you an instant colour and take about eight hours to develop. With some tans you can shower within two hours so you don't need to have that sticky feeling for long. When you finally shower, you will see colour washing off – don't be alarmed, you will have a beautiful tan underneath. Spray tans are good for most sensitive skin types. However, those with ultra-sensitive skin are best to have a patch test done the week before to see if their skin has an allergic reaction to the product.

T DOESN’T have to cost a fortune to look stunning at a school ball. Karamu High School Year 13 student Romaine Crawford proved this when she revealed the dress she would be wearing to her school ball on June 30 came from her aunt’s wardrobe. “I found it in my aunt’s wardrobe and she said she wasn’t going to wear it any more. So I said ‘well I will’.” The 18-year-old has already been to one ball this season, attending the Lindisfarne College ball last Saturday. She wore a mid-length navy, strappy dress. Romaine said there were all sorts of dresses worn at that ball. “Lots of knee length ones but also lots of long dresses. “There were lots of white dresses and also black and navy.” She says when buying a ROMAINE CRAWFORD. ball dress, go for something PHOTO: WARREN BUCKLAND comfortable. “Remember you are going to be in it for five or six hours, dancing around. “I think it’s a good idea to get your hair done at a salon, then you know that if it’s piled on your head it will stay there.” As for makeup, Romaine has had hers done professionally and also had her friend do it. “I don’t wear much makeup and don’t go for the smokey-eyed look so if you have a friend that’s good at it let them do it.” Some young women choose to have a dress made rather than buy or borrow. Dressmaker Robyn Bastin has seen the fashion in ball gowns turn full circle. The self employed seamstress has been snipping and sewing women’s clothes, wedding and ball gowns and making alterations for 30 years. “The trend seems to be going back to full length, simple gowns with thin straps and splits up the front,” Robyn said. “About seven years ago the girls wanted shorter, more cocktail style dresses. But now there’s a mixture. I do get some way out requests, but I love it. The girls come along with their own ideas and they are so creative. “I work through it with them. Sometimes their ideas are unattainable simply because the fabric doesn’t suit.” Robyn said this year red seemed to be the popular colour. “White and navy are also popular and black is still in there.” Asked what she thought of the recent restrictions imposed on students at St Dominic’s College in Auckland (in short, you shouldn’t be able to see through it, up it or down it) Robyn said she thought “kids were creative and should be able to express themselves and be individuals”.

Q: You own the Bank St Bridal Shop and what makes your service unique? A: Being the only bridal retail shop in Northland where you can try before you buy with all alterations done in my shop. If my client chooses a lace-up back wedding dress, I can dress her on her wedding day giving it a professional fit!! Q: Your favourite part of your job is? A: I’m aware that it is a once in a lifetime choice my client is making. This is their day and the photos and memories attached to it will hopefully remain special throughout a lifetime. It’s not like a house or a car purchase, where there will could more than one, so I realise the importance of getting it right!!
THE NORTHLAND WEDDING EXPO 2017 Savvy talks to the expo organizer Jocelyn Lenssen who is a local girl married a local boy. Her hands are full with three young children, close to her family and her passion - a bridal shop!
Q: What is the craziest thing that has ever happened on someone’s wedding day? How did you handle it? A: I get a lot of last minute brides just before their wedding day (because they are just not organized, or are unhappy with what they have purchased elsewhere), but I had a bride come into my shop on her actual wedding day ready to be married within hours, hair and makeup done and needing a wedding dress! Lucky we have a good range and were able to help her look stunning!! Q: Who is this wedding expo for? A: Anyone engaged, yet to be engaged or just wishing to be engaged…. and of course their entourage ;)
Q: You have organised this big event, what are the challenges to bring it all together? A: Creating enough space for even more exhibitors this year wanting to participate, whilst still keeping it affordable for the public to come along!! Q: What’s the average cost of weddings these days? A: If you take everything into account… the average New Zealand Wedding cost between $20,000 and $30,000. The reception (inc food/beverage) usually plays the biggest part. Therefore your venue and guests numbers has the biggest impact on your budget.
When: Sun 21 May 2017, 10:00am–4:00pm
Tickets: Door entry $5.00 per person (under 12's free). All ages welcome
Q: How many stalls are involved in the 2017 expo? A: Over 50!! Q: Who are some of the stallholders that will be there on the day? A: A fantastic range of Northlands leading and top quality wedding specialists all under one roof, offering prizes, tastings, on the day specials and the latest in wedding trends where you can see, touch, taste and try before the planning of your special day. Q: Your favorite part of this expo is? A: The awesome giveaways available and that It is becoming more and more popular for exhibitors wanting to showcase their products/services. It is a growing event that we will have to look into a larger venue in years to come.

About 50% of patients with rosacea experience eye symptoms such as dryness, irritation or watery eyes.
Controlling rosacea WITH THE EYE CENTRE-PRIMECARE
R
osacea is a skin condition which commonly affects the over 30s usually involving the face including the nose, cheeks, forehead, and eyelids.
It is an adult form of acne where the skin becomes thickened and greasy with small dilated blood vessels(Telangectasia) and pimples. The nose often becomes red and enlarged (Rhinophyma) in severe cases. Rosacea has a gradual onset, and usually affects fair-skinned people. In severe cases it is very obvious but in many patients it is more subtle and is only diagnosed when it causes problems with the eyes or eyelids. It is not an infection or cancer, but rather a form of inflammation where the
patients own body is reacting to the skin glands. It is commonly thought that it is caused by drinking alcohol, but this is an old wives tale, and rather alcohol causes flushing which makes it more apparent. It may be exacerbated by sun exposure, spicy foods some medications and emotional upsets. Rosacea is not simply a cosmetic problem however- it often affects the eyelids and hence the eyes themselves leading to multiple problems with vision and discomfort. About 50% of patients
with rosacea experience eye symptoms such as dryness, irritation or watery eyes. The eyelids contain oil glands called the Meibomian glands which normally produce a thin runny oil to lubricate between the eyelids and the eye itself. These glands are the same sort of gland which are affected by rosacea, and it causes them to produce abnormal thick secretions which lead to recurrent infections on the eyelids (Blepharitis) and blocked glands which become cysts (Chalazion). Over time the abnormal secretions can cause corneal ulcers, scarring and ingrowth of blood vessels which can severely impact vision (Rosacea Keratitis). Patients with eye problems due to rosacea often need long-term care by an ophthalmologist with ongoing drops and other medications. Rosacea is a chronic condition which cannot be permanently cured but can be controlled well using treatments including topical treatments such as creams and ointments, anti-fungal shampoos, long-term courses of Tetracycline antibiotics which can influence the glands involved, and most recently Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment, which can give sustained improvement both cosmetically and in eye symptoms.

W
e all know what unhealthy relationships feel like. They’re bumpy, unpredictable, and up and down. Unhealthy relationships make us fester, they drain our energy and enthusiasm, and they often cripple us with resentment, frustration, and disappointment. They are just unpleasant, and we generally do all that we can to avoid them. Building and harnessing healthy relationships with people is something that most of us have nailed. Whether it be friends, work colleagues, or our life partners, we all know the elements that create good, solid relationships, ones that will foster our growth, our confidence and our happiness for life. Forming a trusting and positive relationship takes effort and time, regardless of the type of relationship it is i.e. girlfriend-boyfriend, mother-child, boss-employee. The relationship we build with our health (in particular, nutrition and exercise) is no different. If we can foster a healthy, stable, workable relationship with these two aspects of our health, we are far more likely to be happy and to live with greater levels of daily satisfaction. For any relationship to grow strong and stay strong it takes effort, time, flexibility, perseverance, reflection, and compromise. In an approach to create better healthy habits that will in effect, create a lifestyle that promotes greater wellbeing, we need to initially have a connection, a why, an emotion that sells us on the idea. Emotion is the key behind all relationships – but it’s the type of emotion the relationship elicits that is key. If we approach our newfound healthy habits in an all or nothing, unforgiving, and inflexible manner that courts far more anxiety and frustration than it alleviates, that is most definitely not going to enhance our wellbeing. Similarly, approaching these potentially life-changing new habits with a sense of compulsion (i.e. I must do smash myself
in today’s workout to pay for that square of chocolate I had last night) or a sense of obsession (I have to reach my 12,000 steps today or else) can also create negative connotations – and this may also lead to dread, anxiety, and a sense of failure if these measures are not achieved. Both of these situations can create an evergrowing threshold of ‘it’s not enough’, feeling like you need more and more of a certain activity to quell the distress caused by a less desirable behaviour, and making a negative dent in your overall wellbeing – the exact opposite of what you’re trying to achieve! A healthy approach to your nutrition and exercise aspirations is one that is flexible, pleasurable, compatible with your life and your priorities, adaptable, challenging enough to create change, but most importantly sustainable. You need to understand the exact meaning you are giving a behaviour (whether it be food or exercise related) and the affect that will have on your success today and in the future. Ultimately, if we are doing something because we feel we should be, or because somebody is telling us to, we are far less likely to continue with it as we gain no joy or personal satisfaction by doing so. Any new behaviour will only harness ongoing success and sustainability if it’s something we want to be doing, as opposed to something we feel we should be doing. If there’s one message you take away from this article it’s this one! We must want to do the new behaviour – there must be an intrinsic drive to participate in it, and part of that is because of the amazingness we feel within when we do it. Healthy behaviours will only become healthy habits if we enjoy them, if they fulfil us, if they take us in the direction we want to go, and if they make us feel bombdiggity! What meaning do you give to your healthy activities? And are you fostering healthy relationships with your nutrition and exercise?

BY CAROLYN HANSEN
The experts say we should integrate more plant-based foods into our diets. And that doesn’t mean you have to eat salad every day.
E
ating less animal foods and replacing them with more plantbased foods can bring about major benefits to both our health and the health of our planet. This means eating more veggies, fruits, beans, peas, lentils, whole grains, nuts, seeds, coconut products and plant-based dairy alternatives instead of animal products and processed foods. Eating the recommended amount of veggies, legumes and even fruit is hard for many of us. In fact, fewer than four percent of us are actually meeting the guidelines for vegetable intake. Some of the benefits of a eating more plants in your diet include: • makes you healthier; • helps you balance your diet • helps maintain a healthy weight • gives you more energy • gives you lots of good stuff like nutrients and fiber • saves you money • increases longevity • more environmentally sustainable • help improve animal welfare But the hard part isn’t knowing how important plant-based foods are - it’s knowing how to include these foods in your diet in a simple, achievable way. Many people are tired of going to doctors
just to receive another prescription and are looking for a natural way to help with their health problems. Well, let’s make it easy. Here is a very simple way to integrate more plant-based foods in your diet. Introducing…Health and Wellness Shots And no, not the ones you get at the bar! Here are some 3-ingredient Health “Shots” recipes to energise you:
Green Power Shot • 2 cups spinach • ¼ cup frozen berries
• 1 slice of ginger Blend all of these ingredients together, adding a little water if it’s a bit thick in consistency. You can up the health factor by adding in some spirulina - a superfood algae that is also known as nature’s multivitamin.

WOMEN IN B USINESS
I am available when my clients need me, this is often during the day but can also be after hours.
We have the flexibility to find the right solutions for our clients Name: Alysha Mackenzie Age: 28 for another month Business name and when it was established: Zest Brokers has been around for almost 10 years but I joined the team just over 2 years ago.
What qualifications are you proud of? I have done most of my study while being a mum so for me, the juggling act is something I am as proud of as the actual qualifications. Of course I am a qualified insurance broker, I also take pride in the fact I stay up to date with my qualifications by attending seminars presented by various companies I deal with and I am ready for any changes to our industry.
Describe your business in less than 50 words: At Zest Brokers we are breaking away from the ‘tradition’ of brokers who only deal with one insurance company and we now deal with 11 different insurance companies and banks. This gives us the flexibility to find the right solution for our clients and truly give them the insurance they need.
What was your biggest business challenge last year and how are you tackling it this year? I got asked at an event I was speaking at, “why everyone doesn’t know about brokers?” I was stumped! I would love for everyone to get the added bonus of using a broker, me doing the leg work, fighting claims for you, helping you with paper work and being paid via the insurance companies NOT my clients….. unfortunately, this is a message I am still trying to spread and will continue to do so.
When did you know insurance was for you? From my first job in the insurance industry 10 years ago, I got asked last week where I want to be in 10 years. There is no need to think about this answer for me, I still want to be right here.
What do you love the most about your job? Helping people get the right cover, so often people don’t understand the cover they have, what it covers, if it covers this or that. My mission it to make insurance simple it doesn’t need to be a scary thing I get rid of the jargon and take it back to basics. I get some horrible phone calls for claims needing to be made but there is nothing more powerful than phoning a client to let them know their claim has been accepted.
What does a day in your life look like? No two days are the same for me. My weeks revolve around my family and my clients. I am available when my clients need me, this is often during the day but can also be after hours. After school and creche drop off each morning I tend to emails and anything urgent then it’s a mix of client appointments, putting together quotes and recommendations, marketing, networking and good old office admin (in no particular order). Making the most of small spaces D
ark paint or light paint for a small room? That’s the ultimate question for small-space dwellers. After all, we’re frequently told that smaller rooms should be painted with light colours. But Resene colour consultant Nikki Morris says you needn’t be afraid of embracing either.
“No matter what colour you choose, there are several design concepts that can make your room appear visually bigger.” Using colours with a high light reflectance value, for example, can help reflect and bounce the natural light around the space and give it the illusion of being larger, brighter and more spacious, she says. While white might be the ultimate space creator, certain colours and colour combinations can fool the eye and make interiors seem much more spacious than they are. Pale blues and greens create a calming atmosphere that simultaneously enlarge and brighten a space. They also combine well with other colours. Combinations like creams and icy blues are some of the best for making a space appear bigger. Try creamy shades like Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream, Resene Quarter Pearl Lusta and Resene Rice Cake alongside icy blues such as Resene Breathless and Resene Cut Glass. Sea-foam greens are equally versatile and work well with creams, yellows and greys. Soft tones of yellow can also create a feeling of space, but don’t go too bright or too dark. Lemon and creamy yellows work best (think Resene Gin Fizz). Darker shades can work well in smaller spaces too, says Nikki, but stick to neutral darks like blacks, charcoals, navy blues, chocolate browns and plums. Reds, greens and midtone blues can call too much attention to the walls, making a room feel smaller. “Bold and brighter colours work best as accents or small statements,” says Nikki. But she does encourage people to

consider dark hues. “Embrace that the space is small and go darker with a bold statement wall or room for a cocooning and moody vibe and use some brighter and happier colours as accents,” she says. “Blankets, artwork, rugs, couches, etc, could all be in similar colour tones or families but with textural differences, and then use cushions, lamps and candles for colour pops in bright colours.” Glossy surfaces, which reflect light, are ideal for small rooms, particularly when using darker paint colours. “Use a higher gloss finish on darker elements such as kitchen cabinetry, built-in shelving and fireplace surrounds, but keep the walls in a low sheen finish to offset the gloss differences.” For small homes and apartments you could utilise two to three paint colours, says Nikki: “Two lighter shades and one darker accent colour to keep the space feeling airy but anchored with a darker statement for interest.” Another trick to visually expand a space is to paint the walls and trims the same colour. Where there are no breaks in the trim, your ceilings will appear taller. As well, place your curtain rods close to the ceiling to make it look higher, and extend the rod about 10cm on either side of the window to make the window look bigger and allow more light into the room, which opens it up. If there is not a lot of natural light in the room, add more lighting fixtures. Mirrors can also help reflect both natural and artificial light. Placing a mirror near a window to reflect the outdoors is especially effective at visually expanding a room. Or angle a mirror towards a certain area or focal point to give the illusion of more space. Mirrored wardrobe doors or cabinets are perfect for small spaces, as are glass tables and acrylic chairs, which open up a space. Sofas and armchairs with open or no arms and exposed legs allow light to filter under the furniture, which, again, makes a space appear larger.
A monochromatic colour scheme works extremely well in small spaces too – it allows the eye to move easily around the room without obvious interruption by other colours. This can alter your perception of dimension and can make an interior seem more spacious. “Use subtle contrasting colour to define the areas within an open plan space,” says Nikki. “Use the same family in varying strengths for different areas.” Various textures can also help enhance the single-colour scheme. Or consider stripes, which can help alter the perception of space. Just picture the way horizontal stripes make a person appear bigger. The same goes for rooms. Horizontal stripes visually widen a narrow room, while vertical stripes make a low ceiling seem taller. In a small space, where everything counts, clutter should be hidden away. Too many knick-knacks and pieces of furniture can make it seem like the room is closing in on you. Keep tabletops clear and use multifunctional furniture, such as ottomans that double as coffee tables and extra seating as well as provide hidden storage. If you are lucky enough to have a high stud height, use that height for storage. Alternatively, floating shelves are ideal when there is no room for storage, or no floor space. Keep window treatments to a minimum. Small rooms can become overwhelmed with billowing curtains or drapes with lots of pattern. Pick simple window treatments that let in as much light as possible. A window treatment that is the same colour as the walls will blend in and open up the space. And opt for dining tables that can be made smaller – like a drop-leaf table, or an extendable one. When it comes to decorating small spaces, design trickery is your best friend. Clever design and slick paint colours play a big part in creating the illusion of space. Choose the right colours – light or dark – and you’ll go a long way to ensuring your home, however small, feels light and airy and spacious.

Trends come and go but nostalgia has its place BY SARAH BURROWS
I
n April last year I attended Eurocucina, the largest design fair in Europe. One year on I am surprised to see the vast amount of similarity in New Zealand interior design trends. Every 3 months hundreds of designers await the anticipated quarterly Auckland gift fair expecting to see wholesalers showcase the latest trend in interior design. Throughout the gift fair sophisticated interiors acquired subdued tones compared to last years array of soft pastels. Forest green was a favourite of mine along with the deep violets, which is perfect leading into winter. Mid century furniture draped with fur throws and teamed with a textured rug or fur hide was apparent. French country furniture was still strong like last year and lighter woods paired with a large-scale glass lamp were another style coming through. Leather and fur hides grounded that statement coffee table and paired beautifully with eye catching pendant lighting. Metallic are still strong as it was in Milan last year and accessories still continue to take on a gold or brass finish along with pattern to personalize the interior. Depending on your style whether it is French country, mid century or Modern there is something for you to see and be inspired to change up your interiors. After writing my no more white kitchens article with
my findings from Europe last year I can justify that white is becoming less apparent and reflecting back on last months gift fair and waiting for my client purchases to arrive I can draw a conclusion to say New Zealand is doing well and considered I saw these trends one year ago today we still add our own style and follow trend of the Italian market throughout our kitchen, bathroom and Interiors.

BY CORGI SMIT, FROM BEDS R US WHANGAREI Q: How do I know when it’s time to replace my bed? A: If you are waking up feeling tired and achy, this could be a good indicator and if your bed is older than 10 years, its time to start looking.. .Once a mattress is 10 years old, it has lost up to 80% of its initial support, much like a new car, after 10 years it does not feel the same as it did when you drove it out the showroom. Purchasing a new bed is a big investment and should be the most expensive piece of furniture in your home, bearing in mind that we sleep for 1/3 of our lives, so it’s vital to get it right and that means time in the store, finding that bed that ticks all the boxes, that meet your needs. All our beds are manufactured by Sleepyhead in New Zealand and 99% of our beds have a 10 year warranty.
Q: How do I go about choosing a new bed?
A: Firstly, you need to set time aside. We at BedsRus pride ourselves with matching our customers to their perfect sleep and in order to do this, we need to ask a lot of questions. It’s important for us to know if you sleep on your back, side or stomach or a combination of these in order to advise you as to what comfort level will suit you best. We also need to know if you share your bed, if you are a hot sleeper, what size bed, what’s your budget and what don’t
you like about your current bed. This will help us steer you towards a handful of beds for you to try. We will explain the different spring systems and comfort layers and what their features and benefits are. The next step is to lie on them as long as you can, in the positions you normally sleep in. Sitting on the edge of the bed, will not help you determine the feel of the bed, as all beds are made to support the length of your entire body, so please don’t test beds by sitting on them. Just lie down and relax.
Q: Should I buy a firm bed for my back issues?
A: Only if you are a flat stomach or flat back sleeper, BUT if you sleep on your side, the answer is a definite NO. Most mattresses on the market are constructed in such a way, that when you lie on your side, the springs at your hip and shoulder areas adjust to keep your spine aligned. The softer comfort layers on top of the springs are necessary so that you don’t get a build up of pressure in these vital areas. At BedsRus we offer a 30 Day Comfort Warranty (conditions apply), so call in and see us and we promise to do our best to matching you to your perfect sleep.. PS. Please remember information is always free, so if you have a question or a concern, please do not hesitate to call us on 09 4383550, 7 days a week. I also recommend you look at our BedsRus website. ‘Til next time… Cheers, Corgi

Finding your perfect match
D
espite the profusion of home-renovation ideas in magazines and online, many of us still lack the confidence to mix and match colours in our own houses. Here are some suggestions to help you move away from cream and beige. The home colours people tend to select are similar to those that they feel comfortable wearing, says colour designer Peta Tearle. “When you’ve spent years wearing certain colour combinations, it stands to reason that you’d feel uncomfortable putting together a home palette that deviates too much from this,” she points out. While homedecorating shades take their cues directly from the latest fashion runway colours, there’s one important difference, says Peta. They have more staying power, moving in and out of fashion at a slower rate. With a home décor, too, you can’t change the colour of the major components as frequently or easily as you can your wardrobe. Re-upholstering your lounge suite and installing new curtains and carpet is an expensive way to update the look of a room, but changing the wall colour is not – especially if it’s a feature room you’re repainting. As any designer will tell you, paint is your most versatile medium and can easily be changed when you feel the need for a new look. It only takes a few litres to create a feature area that can be repainted to suit your mood, the season, or a change in decorating plans. The experts suggest allocating one space as a permanent feature and changing it regularly as your tastes and colour trends develop. This allows you to experiment with colours. You can always repaint if you don’t like the first shade you choose! Successful colour schemes have one thing in common, and that’s balance. When selecting shades, try to use no more than two or three principal colours, with touches of other accent colours to lift the scheme. You may prefer to keep to one colour type (a monochromatic scheme)
or select from related colours (a harmonious scheme) to ensure balance. Another way to ensure your décor is visually interesting, but works well, is to establish a good balance of light, mid and dark tones.
Colour-mixing success Sharing values All colours have a value, which signifies their depth or light reflectivity. One approach to colour matching is to use two or three choices of the same value or depth. Resene colour charts have a light-reflectance value (expressed as an LRV percentage) for each colour sample. Black has a reflectance value of 0%, while white is 100%. By selecting colours with similar LRVs, you can create a calm, harmonious mood.
Opposites attract
Another way to combine colours is by mixing contrasting tones. Take two colours on opposite sides of the colour wheel – for example, blue and orange. This works best if one colour is dominant and the other serves as a contrast. You can also use a split complementary scheme by taking a colour either side of the orange, such as a yellow-toned orange and a red orange.
Side by side
Alternatively, you could add interest to a room by using a group of related colours – those that sit next to each other on the colour wheel, such as orange, red and brick red, or blue, green and lilac. “They’re a lot less agitating than contrasting colours,” says Peta. Varying the value and intensity of colours is recommended.
Three times better
Triadic schemes use three colours that are equidistant on the colour wheel, for example: red orange, yellow green and blue violet. Use one as the dominant colour and the other two as accents.
White base
Pastels appeal to a lot of people because they’re easy to use in a colour scheme. These are pure colours with
Specialising in all Gas Home Heating Systems and Water Heating needs
the addition of white. This common element means that you can successfully combine any pastels into a colour scheme. The addition of clean white also makes most pastels appear soft and fresh. When it comes to using colour, there are no real fool-proof recipes, says Peta. “The wonderful thing about colour is the opportunity to experiment and incorporate an element of surprise.”
Colour tips and tricks
• If you want to use dark colours, use a flat or low-sheen paint, such as Resene SpaceCote or Resene Zylone Sheen, which will minimise surface imperfections. • When planning a colour scheme, consider the adjacent rooms. • Matt surfaces absorb the light, and appear darker and deeper than glossy surfaces, which reflect light and make a room appear larger. When creating mood in a room, consider the following: pale and pastel blues are relaxing, and will make a room appear larger. Yellows, oranges and reds encourage activity and brighten a room. Greens create a soothing, harmonious atmosphere, while red is an appetite stimulator, making it a popular choice for dining rooms.

Avocados grow your own
BY ISABEL KRAUSS
BY DEBBIE OLDFIELD
Growing tips and hints
Common Varieties Hass – Oval shape with a thick pebbly skin that darkens when ripe. Ripens September to April (this is the one you usually get at the supermarkets)
Bacon – Large pear shape fruit with thin smooth skin which stays green when ripe. Most cold hardy variety. Ripens July to September Reed – Large round fruit with thick smooth skin that stays green when ripe. Ripens February to June
Fuerte – Pear shape fruit with smooth skin that stays green when ripe. Ripens August to November We have lots of Hass avocado available at the moment, and will have the Bacon, Reed and Fuerte varieties available in Spring.
- Purchase a named variety tree from a nursery. It should begin fruiting about 3 years after planting. Ones you grow yourself from seed can take 7+ years to fruit, or they may never fruit at all! Best times to plant are spring and autumn. Prepare. Prepare the soil before hand by mixing in compost and well rotted manure. Add some slow release fertiliser tablets when you initially plant. - Once the tree is established apply mulch. - Apply a high Nitrogen fertiliser a few times over the spring/ summer. 12-5-12 (NPK) mix is good. Lime every three years. - When planting, DO NOT disturb the root system! - Phytophthora root rot is the most serious disease of avocado trees. Your tree will need very good drainage and a deep soil. - Do not let young trees dry out or sit in water. If your leaves are going brown lay off the water immediately! -Avocado trees are frost tender, especially while young, so protect with frost cloth. Hardy to -3°c once established. -Provide a warm, sheltered sunny position with lots of room to grow (trees can get to 8x5M). - Protect from wind when young. Avocados are salt wind tolerant. - Fruit drop tends to happen around midsummer and is quite normal, the tree is just shedding excess fruit at the immature stage. However fruit loss can occur if the soil dries out to much. - Avocado trees are predominantly self-fertile, although in our warmer Northern climate cross pollination with another tree may improve fruit set.
HASS AVOCADO TREES
CAMELLIA ‘YULETIDE’
T
his may not be the first article on Camellias that you have come across, but what should I say – it is that time of year again and they are just looking wonderful! The colours in the nursery are ranging from white to soft pink to dark red and it’s certainly the most colourful aisle that we have at the moment! Whether as a specimen tree, a hedge or trimmed as a standard in a pot at your front entrance, their display of colours is just stunning. And if you get a mixture of cultivars you can get a colourful display from now on right through to CAMELLIA ‘SETSUGEKA’ early spring. One of the smaller growing Camellias is the cultivar ‘Paradise Petite’ with small soft pink peony type blooms. They make a great little hedge or container plant and have a neat and compact form. If you are wanting a particularly large blooming flower the Camellia ‘Setsugeka’ is a great pick, sparkling white (young blooms tinged pink on edges), semi-double blooms up to 10cm across. As with other Camellias
FEIJOA TREES
they prefer to be in full sun to semi-shade with shelter from strong winds as those can damage buds and flowers. Another cultivar that displays large flowers is the ‘Paradise Belinda’ with its large single pink blooms. Another of my favourites is Camellia ‘Yuletide’ – this small tree covers itself in red single flowers with golden stamens for most of winter and is great for brightening up a dull corner of your garden. If you are growing Camellias in a container make sure you get an acidic potting mix to accommodate their growing requirements. Camellias also need good drainage so make sure your pot has got at least one good drainage hole. In the garden a Camellia/Azalea fertiliser will keep your plants happy and looking great (and you can even apply the same fertiliser to your Gardenias and Blueberries!). Fertilising is best done in spring after they have stopped flowering and again midsummer.

H
aving never taken much notice of the traditional Moussaka dish before, I do now after dining at Turkuaz Cafe recently. I had been told about their healthy lunches, generous salads as well as the affordability many times. However, I was yet to browse through their extensive menu myself. I’d also heard that they had recently opened a bar for their service and was excited to dine out at night and enjoy a fine wine over interesting conversation with a friend. The restaurant was packed without being crowded. Families, couples and friends came and went, it seemed to suit everyone. The service was super fast and well presented, I also noted the children tables with colouring in options as well as magazines for the adults waiting on takeaway orders. Around us was tasteful Turkish decor, not over the top but thinking of everything. There were many options on the menu, from kebabs to pitas, salads, rice, chips and authentic Turkish meals. I was interested in trying something new and opted for the Mixed Iskender priced at $14.90 served on rice with hummus, tzatziki, tabbouleh, salad greens, red cabbage and a choice of sauces. I went for the garlic yoghurt and sweet chilli to accompany my dish. My dining partner had spent time in Turkey and was eager to test the Musakka for $16.50, a traditional dish that I now know all about and tried to recreate tonight at home, not quite the same. This dish was served with a similar array of salads as the Iskender and arrived at our table within ten minutes. If I’d known how good the Musakka was, I would have ordered one all too myself. For dessert, again it was the authenticity that we were after so I’m glad we chose the Baklava served with cream and pistachios, a beautiful dish. The Tiramisu also got my winning vote, very subtle that even someone who dislikes coffee flavour would give this dish the green light. It was soft, creamy and very hard to stop eating the generous serving. If you are looking for fresh, quick, healthy and welcoming, you can’t go wrong at Turkuaz Cafe. Bring the whole family too, as the restaurant is set up to accommodate numbers and will satisfy the hungriest of stomachs!

Slow Cooked by Allyson Gofton Penguin, $50

onion, garlic and chorizo sausage. Into the frying pan put the paprika and tomato paste and stir continuously for 1-2 minutes until the tomato paste turns a deep red-brown colour. Doing this will intensify the warm flavours of the finished casserole. Add the tomatoes and juice, stock, wine and thyme and bring to the boil, stirring to lift any ts sediment from the base of the frying pan — these bits add flavour, too — and then pour over lamb shanks and cover. Cook on a low for 6-7 hours or on high for 4-5 hours. Stir in the olives before serving with piles of mashed potatoes, polenta or pasta and garnish with thyme. If you would like a thicker sauce, mix about 2 tablespoons of flour to a paste with water and stir into to the cassrole in the last hour of cooking.

JO HARDY RETROSPECTIVE. 28 May – 20 August 2017
W
hangarei Art Museum – Te Manawa Toi is honoured to present NOT NOW APOCALYPSE: Jo Hardy

Retrospective. Considered one of the matriarchs of Northland art, NOT NOW APOCALYPSE includes a selection of works from Hardy’s oeuvre, many of which are loaned from private collections within New Zealand. The retrospective also includes a selection of exquisite lithographs that were produced in the 80s and 90s at Te Kowhai Print Trust - a community printmaking facility based at the Quarry Arts Centre in Whangarei. Hardy attended Ilam School of Fine arts and exhibited in Christchurch before moving to Northland in the late 70s where she continued to produce over 600 paintings. She also fell in love, married, became a mother, a gardener, a writer, a member of a rural community and, in 2003, was widowed. Jo Hardy – who also worked under the names Jo Who (painter/printmaker) and Jo McNeill (Northern Advocate art critic and columnist) – was self-trained in acrylic paint. Combined with her excellent drawing skills, she developed a mature and deliberative style spanning nearly 50 years. The bright and whimsical aesthetic of Hardy’s paintings ground themselves around
the human condition. Her paintings are reactions to what she saw, what she felt and what she needed to explain. Hardy underlined a freedom of consciousness; borrowing aspects of reality and using them as metaphors in a parallel painted universe. She believed we each invent reality as we go along; painting is one of the ways to do it. “I am interested in portraying both what is and what is not. My pictures are a deliberate record-keeping of fleeting minutiae, memories, dreams, attempts to depict that which has no fixed visual form and narrative fiction.” - Jo Hardy, 1998. Hardy’s paintings are lyrical narrative works painted with acrylic on canvas. She worked on her knees on the floor, as if at prayer. Slowly, with care and precision, she built up thin wet layers of coloured washes, tickling them up until they glow. The celebrated Northland artist sadly passed away of cancer on the 25th of July 2016 but not before she had given her blessing to the Whangarei Art Museum to curate and develop her retrospective exhibition bringing 50 years of art making together in one space. NOT NOW APOCALYPSE: Jo Hardy Retrospective is on from the 29th of May 20th August 2017.

O
nce upon a time, in Whangarei land, there lived a magical children’s store… and the story almost ended last Christmas. The community was upset, Facebook buzzed with news of the closure until by chance it came to the attention of local Planetarium North Director, Peter Felhofer. “The first time I walked into Storytime I was transported back to my childhood

shopping for toys with Dad. When I learnt that the lease was expiring and the owner of 35 years wanted to retire, I felt I had to do something to keep Storytime open.” Time was short and the Porowini Avenue premises were demolished by February, so with only a week to go a plan was hatched. Teasers were posted to Facebook and the community support clearly showed that Storytime belongs to the children of Northland. And so it came to pass with support from the Whangarei District Council new premises were found. Storytime has had a number of homes over the years, and this one outside the Children’s playground at the Town Basin has been described as the best yet. A party with Golden ticket invitations for 35 lucky children celebrated the reopening of Storytime at the Town Basin on Thursday, April 20. ‘Local performers from Whangarei Theatre Company’s Wizard of Oz production, Making a Scene Drama and Voice Academy and magician Mike Easterbrook were present to entertain over 200 guests with the official ribbon cutting a joint effort with former owner Annemarie Florian, Mayor Sheryl Mai and new owner Peter Felhofer.

N
ew to the market is the amazing Play n’ Trace, a transparent touch screen that lets kids write, trace and draw without paper. Ideal for ages 3 to 10. Hear from happy customers: “This is a fantastic product! My daughter has been writing on it nonstop since we got it. Her writing and spelling are both rapidly improving and I plan to use it to help teach her cursive writing soon. I wrote a few things on a piece of paper and she was able to easily trace them repeatedly on her Boogie Board. So hopefully it will help make that chore a bit easier. She loves it! And when she outgrows it I plan to attach it to the back of our door so we can use it instead of taping reminder notes on it all the
time. Really happy with this purchase!!” “My son is getting too the age where he needs to be entertained. We have started looking for toys that will entertain him but also be educational or benefit him in some way! He loves coloring and drawing. We often take long car rides and we don’t want him coloring or having pens while we drive! When we came across the Play n’ Trace we were ecstatic! He was so excited with this neat toy. The translucent writing surface is designed into an artist’s pallet, making it comfortable for hands of all sizes. The durable design allows kids to write, trace and draw anywhere, anything, over and over without the waste of paper. When kids write, they learn which is how this is a great educational toy for my son.”

Offering youth opportunities
W
ith National Youth Week at the end of the month, Creative Northland has launched the registrations to one of the biggest opportunities to Northland youth to get creative and find their inner voice at the 2017 Northland Youth Summit Arts Festival to be held in Dargaville on Wednesday 6 and Thursday 7 September. The FREE two-day festival is open to 60 youth from all over the Northland region. The event has a proud history of giving our 12-24
year olds the chance to express what matters to them while giving them a platform, in which they feel comfortable in, to tell their stories. The festival follows the 2015 summit: a two-day film workshop, where 50 participants created eight films on the subjects that mattered to them. The worthy film crew’s film about bullying was voted the favourite by the youth and mentors. This group of young women from Kaitaia went on to make another film to be entered in the ‘Making a Difference’ film awards in Wellington, where they were
nominated for six awards and won two. Which then lead to them being awarded NZ Youth Group of the Year. This is a great example of how this event can be a platform to develop new skills and enable our young people to have the confidence to speak up about the issues that matter to them and their community. The 2017 event will have the theme of ‘Our Voices, Our Stories’, and will offer a range of workshops run by experts in their fields of music, theatre, film, mural design and 3D digital mapping design. The youth will be a part of
one of these creative workshops and will learn new skills which will allow them to express themselves in their chosen genre. Applications are now open and organisers encourage anyone in the 12-24 year bracket to apply for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Applications close 11 August. For further information please contact Sarah Miln on 09 430 0710 or sarah@ creativenorthland.com. Visit our website www.creativenorthland.com to see past youth summits.

Hau Tafataha-’O-Iotofale’ia Livai from Okaihau College sets a DOC 200 kill trap
A
staggering 170,000 animal pests have been removed from eastern Northland over the last four years by projects involved in the Kiwi Coast initiative. With the group now into its fifth year Kiwi Coast co-ordinator Ngaire Tyson says it demonstrates the power of people working together and the impact they are having on Northland’s predators. In 2016 alone, a total of 56,455 animal pests were trapped, meaning that every week more than 1000 pests are being removed from the Kiwi Coast. More than 80 groups are now trapping over 125,217 hectares of Northland, making the Kiwi Coast the largest pest control project in New Zealand. Ngaire says the effect of this landscapescale pest control is evident in the flourishing native forests, increasing kiwi numbers and the return of birdsong to near silent areas where the pests are being
controlled to low levels. Together we are making a real difference on-the-ground. “The Kiwi Coast’s vision of creating New Zealand’s first kiwi corridor, where kiwi can roam safely across Northland from one safe area to another, gets closer every year as communities lead the charge to not just reverse the decline of kiwi but ensure they flourish forever.” Since 2013 the collaboration of community, iwi and agency led projects involved in the Kiwi Coast have destroyed 169,557 pests including: 69,871possums; 69,233 rats; 5,535 mustelids; 2,299 feral cats; and 522 feral pigs. The results represent thousands of hours of work and checking each year by a mix of unpaid and professional trappers, some of whom have been operating for almost two decades. Overall in Northland kiwi are increasing at a slow and steady rate at sites along the Kiwi Coast where predators are controlled to low levels, bucking the national trend of a nationwide decline in kiwi of 2% per year. Some kiwi populations have more than doubled at a number of sites on the Kiwi Coast. “As ferrets and stoats can devastate kiwi populations, removing 5,535 mustelids from the Kiwi Coast over four years is a huge part of keeping Northland kiwi numbers going up. It’s crucial now to sustain this momentum,” said Ngaire. Check out the website: www.kiwicoast.org.nz
