MāhangaMitchellgrewupasthe youngestofninesiblingsinthefarflungHokiangawheretereowashis firstwrittenandspokenlanguage andkapahakaaneverydayadoredactivity.

“Itwasquiet.Theonlyneighboursreallyare cows,”helaughs.“You’vegottojumponthe quadtogetdowntonan’shousetogoseethe cousins.It’sallgravelroadsandbarefeetand we’dgoplayinthebush.That’swhatitwaslike growingupintheHokianga–it’sraw.”

InYear13,drama askedagroupofstudent totakepartintheT ShakespeareFestivaland unenthusiasticresponse.

“Wewerealllike,‘Nah,hellno doingShakespeare,”recallstheformerdeputy headboy,whoadmitsheknew,‘absolutely stuff-all’aboutthetopic.

“Andshewaslike,‘Ifyouguyswin,youget togotoWellington’,andwewerelike,‘Oh, nah,we’llbekeenthen!’.Sowespentthenext monthrehearsinga15-minutescenefrom Shakespeare’sproductionMacbeth.”

ThefestivalwasheldinApril2021and involved59Whangāreihighschoolstudents

NorthlandattheNationalSheilahWinn ShakespeareFestivalfinalsinWellington,from whereopportunitiesabound.

RecallsMāhanga:“Watchingourcompetitors performwasanincredibleexperiencebut,after everygroup,wewerelosinghopeinourscene andweresecond-guessingourselveswhether weweregoingtomakethecut.Wehadto remindourselvesthatwewenttoWellington withonegoal,andthatwastoperformtothe bestofourability.Ifweperformedwell,then haddoneourjobandthat'sexactlywhatwe amenextwasunexpectedforour ,aswewereabsolutelyshockedto begiveneightawardsatprize-giving-breaking rthemostawardseverwonbya singleschool.”

bankoftheRiverThames.Itisareconstruction oftheGlobeTheatre,anElizabethanplayhouse forwhichWilliamShakespearewrotehis plays.Theoriginaltheatrewasbuiltin1599, destroyedbyfirein1613,rebuiltin1614,and thendemolishedin1644.ThemodernGlobe Theatreisanacademicapproximationbased onavailableevidenceofthe1599and1614 buildings.Itisconsideredrealistic,though modernsafetyrequirementsmeanthatit accommodatesonly1400spectatorscompared totheoriginaltheatre’s3000.

Butthe18-year-oldVictoriaUniversity student,whohasneverlefttheNorthIsland, remainsundaunted.Infact,it’saculmination ofhissteppingstonestothebigsmoke–from Hokianga-Whangārei-Wellington-London.

“Ijustkeepfindingbiggersmoke,”helaughs.

The22-dayexperiencewillinvolvetimeoff university,whereheisstudyingaBachelorof ArtsintheatreandMāoristudies,withtheend goalofworkinginfilmandtelevision.Hehad abrieftasteinfrontofthetvcameraslastyear wheninterviewedbyJohnCampbellonTVNZ’s Breakfastshow.

Tohelphis‘RoadtotheGlobe’,aGivealittle pagewassetupwiththegoalofraising$9,500, whichithasalreadysurpassed,currently totalling$16,150.Theremainderwillgotoward histertiaryeducation.

“Seeingsomanydifferentpeoplefrom differentbackgroundsrallybehindmycause hasbeensuchahumblingexperience,”says Māhanga,whoworksapart-timejobaround universityhours.

OnedonatorislocalrealestateagentGabe Schoonderwoerd,whorecognisedMāhanga’s journeyfromasimilaronehecarriedouta decadeearlier.

TheformerWBHSstudentwentthrough thesameprocessbeforebeingselectedto representAotearoaattheGlobe.

“Ihadasmallertimeframe organisedinasIwasalsosavingtobeable togotoSwitzerlandforayearaspartofthe RotaryInternationalYouthExchangeprogram, whichmeantIleftNewZealandinJanuaryof 2013.Mid-yearItravelledfromtheretoLondon andreunitedwithmyfellowselecteeswho madetheirjourneyfromNewZealandforour performanceattheGlobe.Weperformed‘A MidsummerNight’sDream’,whereIplayedone oftheleads,Lysander.

“WethentravelledinShakespeare’s footstepsforacoupleweeks,whilstmarvelling inhismodernisedworksthroughoutmanyof thetheatresinLondonandsurrounds,after whichItravelledbacktoSwitzerland,before eventuallyreturninghometoNewZealand.”

WhenGabesawMāhanga’sstory,hewas impressedbyafellowWBHSstudentfollowing hispassionandwantedtosupporthisjourney, knowingfirst-handthecostsinvolvedandthe life-changingexperiencegained.

AsforhisinitialShakespearereluctance,it’s fairtosayhe’shadachangeofheart.

“Shakespeare’srealinteresting,”he enthuses.“Theunderlyingthemesandplotsfor Shakespeare’splaysarethestandardsforalot ofperformancematerialthesedays.Icansee theinfluencefromShakespeareinmodern-day performanceandI’mlearningthefoundationof theatre.That’sthegoldstandard–Shakespeare.”

Rollingball timepiece mesmerizescrowds

AtasiteintheTownBasin,multi-generational crowdsgather,roundtheclock–literally–mesmerizedbywhat’sinfrontofthem.

Snippetsofconversationcanbeheard;some speculateaboutwhatisgoingonbeforetheir eyes,afew,intheknow,explain,tomembers oftheirgroup,whatishappening,whileothers exclaiminexcitementastheballdrops.

Incaseyouhadn’tfigureditout,thisisthe TownBasin’slatestattraction,theworld-unique RollingBallClock,a14-yearprojectcreatedby agroupoflocals.

Theideawasinspiredbya smallversionofa1970sRolling BallClockintheadjacent ClaphamsClockMuseum.The group,whichsnowballedto becometheAboutTimeTeam, allholdinganimpressive andvariedskillset,decided tocreateareplicaamplified

versiontohelpincreasevisitorstothemuseum andprovideafurthertouristattractiontothe TownBasin.

Since2008,theteamputinthousandsof hourstotheproject,whichincludedconvincing theWhangāreiDistrictCouncil(WDC)itwas worthwhile.Thisinvolvedtheconstructionofa full-sizeworkingdemonstrationmodelin2016 whichWDCaccepted,subsequentlyallocatinga sitenexttothemuseum.Thenbegantheyears offundraisingandconstruction.

Therollingballclockdisplaystimeusing ballsandrails.Measuring6m x4mx2.5mhighandwitha strikingwaveformroof,theglassenclosedkineticsculptureweighs 20tonnes.Itcomprises35balls travellingaroundonstainless steeltrackstorevealthe physicsoftime.Theyperform variousphysicalmotionslike

bankedcorners,loop-the-loop,ride-inelevators, helpedbyarotatingpedalman-Whangārei‘sTe MatauāPohebasculebridgealsoplaysapart–beforelandingonrackswhichindicatethetime.

Adjacenttothepositionofeachballisa numbercorrespondingtothehours,minutes andseconds.

Thepieceof“precisionengineering”, constructedbyAbsoluteStainless,notonlytells thetimeprovidingamajortouristattraction, buthaseducationalandculturalvalues.The structureshowstheMilkyWayandisalignedto Maramataka,theMāorilunarcalendarandwill provideeducationalopportunitiesforschools toshowchildrenmathematics,physicsandthe culturalaspectoftheballclock.

Aftermanyset-backs,thetimepiecewas finallyunveiledandswitchedontothepublicon April7inoneoftwopublicceremoniesinvolving hundredsofspectators.

ProjectmanagerWarrenThomassaysthe responsetotheclockhasbeen‘amazing’.

“Onedescriptionwe’vehadisit’sthebest man-madetouristattractioninNewZealand.

“Theclockisprovingapopularholiday attractionwithaminimumof40-50peopleevery 1pm.Thatisthetimeofdaythatalltheracks emptytheirballsandeverypartoftheclock swingsintomotion,”heexplains,addingthatitis popularwithteens,toddlersandevendogs.

“Toddlerssitintheirpramsgluedtotheglass. Allfoursideshavedifferentballtricks,there’s alwayssomethingtolookat.”

Hesays,apartfromacoupleofself-inflicted

balljam-upswhichoccurredwhilecleaning therails–nowresolved–everythinghadbeen tickingalongtoplan.

“It’sworkingperfectlywellandkeeping accuratetime.”

Theprojectcostover$1m,plusseveral hundredthousanddollars-worthofgoodsand servicesfromsponsors.AboutTimestillhold themaintenancecontractwhiletheyfinaliseany potentialteethingissues,beforeofficiallygifting theclocktoWDCinJune.

SaysWarren:“It’staken14yearssowedon’t wanttodroptheballnow.”

Meanwhile,membersoftheteamwearing high-visveststaketurnsattendingtheclockto minglewithspectatorsandanswerquestions.

Securityistight;aswellas‘tough,laminated glassonthebullet-proofenclosure’,aninternal cameramonitorstheclock’sprogress,whichcan beviewedliveontheRollingBallClockwebsite, andeightsurveillancecameras–twooneach side–surroundingthebrightly-litmasterpiece areconnectedtothemonitoredpolicenetwork.

Theclock,whichneedspowertorun,is operationalfrom9amto9pm.

Ginisaspirituniversallyfound andgainingpopularityin hugeleapsandbounds,but whatmakesgin,giniswell worthexploring.Youcanbeforgivenfor thinkingitismerelyflavouredvodka, butohthereissomuchmoretothis intriguinglibation.

But, what is gin?

Firstly,vodkaismadefromdistillingrye, wheatorpotatoes,whereasginismadeby distillingmaltorgrainandinfusingitwith botanicals.Thisiswheretheflavourcomes from.Secondly,ginmusthaveaminimumABV (alcoholbyvolume)of37.5percentintheUK and40percentintheUSA.Thirdly,itmust containjuniperberries,Juniperistoginas hopsaretobeer.

Botanicalsarederivedfromplants.The importanceofbotanicalsisnotonlyinthe endlessflavourprofilestheyprovide,but whentheyareadded,itdefinesthestyleof thegin.Letuslookatafewbotanicalsmore commonlyfoundandtheparttheyplayinthe endproduct.

JuniperBerries

Interestinglyenough,juniperberriesare actuallynotberriesatall,butarecloserrelated tothepinecone.Thiswouldexplaintheresiny, citrusaromaandtastetheyeffuse.Beforebeing addedtothebotanicalmixandbasespirit,they arechoppedorcrushed.Wheretheyaregrown, thesoilandclimateallimpacttheflavourthe juniperberriesimpartinthespirit.

CorianderSeeds

Corianderplaysapivotalroleinginproduction anditisactuallyveryraretofindaginthat doesnotincludeitamongstitsbotanicals.The seedisthepartused,soallthecorianderhaters canrelaxandenjoythegin!Corianderaddsa complexcitrusy,spicyelement.Interestingly enough,theUkraineisamajorsupplierofthe seed,whichcouldseesupplyshortagesinthe nearfuture.

Angelica

Youwillmostcommonlyfindtherootofthe plantused.However,somedistillerswillusethe flowersandseeds.Itaddsanearthymedicinal element,butitalsohasastabilisingquality whichhelpstoroundouttheflavours.

BlackCollardistilleryinKerikeri; thedistillers,JonathanandJamie, sharedwithmetheirownfavourite servesandsomeofthebotanicals theyuse.Amongtheusualbotanical suspects,youwillfindlicorice, elderberryandtheonethattickled mytastebudswasmarshmallow. Nottobeconfusedwiththefluffy accompanimenttoahotchocolate, buttherootoftheshrub,thisoffers afloralwoodynotetothegin.

Jamie’sfavouriteserveismerely overicewithagoodqualitytonic, whereasJonathanpreferstoadda sliceofgrapefruitandsubstitutethe tonicforsoda.I,ontheotherhand,

wentwithabitmorerazzamatazz, andoptedforpurplesage,appleand elderflowertonicwhichmyfriends allreportedtoenjoyimmensely. Theleadingplatformforhomerenovation anddesignHouzz.co.nz,surveyed*their communityofhomeownerstolearnhowthey tackledrenovationprojectswiththeirpartners andwhatwouldhavemadetheprocess smoother.

Duringrenovations,10percentofcouples surveyedconsideredseparatingatonepoint andnearlytwo-fifthssaidtheyhadfound theexperienceofworkingonitwiththeir significantothertobefrustrating(35%).For nearlyoneinten,thethoughtofcouples’ counsellingevencrossedtheirmindduringthe renovation(7%).

Cleverhome designs address landsupplyissues

With available land fornew homesscarceacross NewZealand andaverage blocksizes gettingsmaller,designersare getting creative with newhomedesigns, scrappingtraditionalfeaturesto maximise useablespace within homes.

BuildingdesignerPeterMannion createdthenewrangeofhouse designsforStonewoodHomesand saysthesinglebiggestfactorhe consideredwhendesigningthehomeswas themajorissueofalandsupplyshortageand shrinkingblocksizes.

“Theavailabilityoflandisamajorissue andhouseblocksizeswilljustcontinuetoget smaller,”hesaid.“Wearebasingourdesigns onthatpremiseanddesigninghomesfor smallersites.”

“Inadditiontoblocksizesgettingsmaller, buildingregulationsmeantthatinsome instancesonly35percentoftheblockcouldbe builton.Wehavetogetcreativewithnewhome designstomaximiseabuilding’sfootprint.”

“ForStonewoodHomes’newEvokerangeof housedesigns,we’vehalvedthehallwayspaces andusedittocreatebiggerlivingareas,”he said.“Thereareminimalnooksandcrannies andabetterflowbetweenrooms.”

MrMannionsaid,inthepast,buildershad over-designedhomes,butnewhomebuyers werenowlookingforsimplearchitecturewith clean,symmetricallinesandwerefavouring naturalmaterialssuchastimberandstone.

“TheNewZealandnewhomebuyermarket isverydiscerning,moresothaninAustralia ortheUSandtheyappreciategooddesign. Thereisdefinitelyatrendtoincorporatemore

naturalfinishesinhomes,withweatherboard facadesandsensibleuseofnaturalstoneso thatitisnotoverpowering,yetworkswithits surroundingenvironment.”

MrMannionsaidCovidhadalsoinfluenced homedesignandnewhomebuyerbehaviour.

“We’refindingthatpeoplenowhavealot moretimetogetinvolvedinthedesignoftheir newhomeandarewantingamorefunctional spacetolivein.Themajordesignchangethat hasarisenfromCovidistheadditionofdedicated officesorstudyroomsandwe’reoftenlocating thesenearthefrontdoorsothatpeoplewho workfromhomecanhavecolleaguesvisitwithout havingthemwanderthroughthewholehome.”

MrMannionsaidakeyfactorinmodern homedesignwascreatinghomestofitthelocal landscapeandtopography.

“WithintheEvokerangethereareavariety ofhousedesignstomaximisethesolargain ofaparticularlandsite.Inthepast,people wouldsimplylockuptheirhomesinwinterto staywarm,butifyoudesignahousetocatch asmuchofthewintersunaspossible,while protectingthehomefromthesummersun,you canactuallyopenthehouseupinallseasons andhaveacomfortableindoor/outdoorflow. “We’vedefinitelymovedawayfromthe traditionalU-shapedkitchenandwe’renow designingkitchenstobeasergonomically functionalaspossible,withopenspaces,island benchesandbutlers’pantries,whichprovide additionalstorageandcleaningspaceoptions forhomeowners.Withbathrooms,we’re actuallymakingthemslightlybiggerasthat’s whatnewhomebuyerswant.”

Withinteriordesign,MrMannionsaidnew homebuyersarealsofavouringsimpledécor thatcanbeeasilychangedthroughouttheyears.
