Recently I was guest speaker at the Go Red For Women breakfast. The target was to inform and remind women about the importance of heart health. It’s such a great event to be involved with as they had a representative from The Heart Foundation addressing the nutritional aspect, a cardiac nurse specifically educating the audience medically and then I spoke about the importance of self-love and loving relationships and how that contributes to heart vitality. As women, we have many roles — mothers, wives, partners & often business owners. So let’s get to the heart of the matter – as it is indeed the heart that matters! To have optimal cardiovascular health, your emotional and spiritual heart are just as important as your physical heart, and care must be given to all aspects of this vital organ. Every thought, feeling and emotion creates an instantaneous cascade of literally thousands of hormones that orchestrate a symphony of positive and negative charge in the body. So you actually get to orchestrate how well you are being, by the way you interact, or react to life. Love, represents kindness, compassion, and deep affection. Love is both self-directed and directed toward others. It’s important to have self-love first and foremost. How do you take care of your heart health? Are you well rested? How do you manage stress? Do you know how to manage stress? Do you know how to be emotionally free? Do you exercise daily? Do you participate in Mind Body Practice? Do all of your relationships equal love? Do you laugh uncontrollably? So, over the next month take new action in your whole heart life – physical, emotional & spiritual. Speak from your heart. Action with love is meaningful.

tips for looking good in summer
GO BANANAS WITH COLOUR Fruity shades are in this summer, so don’t be afraid to go bright and bold. Citrus colours are the flavour of the season, with yellows and oranges of all shades looking set to brighten us all up.
DITCH THE DRAB With bright colours in vogue, there’s even more reason to let go of the blacks, greys and browns in your wardrobe. Edele says the notion that black is both slimming and flattering is simply not true: “Bright colours in the right shape for your body type can take 10 years off and make you look slimmer.”
CLASH THOSE PRINTS Clashing prints are still on trend, so don’t be afraid to mix it a little. But remember to look in the mirror before you go out – do they work well together, or do they just hurt your eyes?

MIX YOUR FABRICS
by CLARE BLACKBURN
E
dele MacDonald has had a passion for fashion from an early age. Strongly influenced by her mother, a pattern technologist who worked with the top European fashion houses on their flagship catwalk shows, Edele learned the industry from the inside. As a student – of fashion, of course – she was allowed to hang out backstage at the major fashion shows in London, Paris and Milan. With the industry in her blood, it was no surprise that she went on to work as a womenswear designer, supplying clothes to top London stores like John Lewis. But it was when she started teaching that she found her true vocation.
“I’ve been teaching fashion for seven years and I love it – I really love my job,” she says. “It’s about passing on your knowledge to the students and helping them see how they can push themselves. I like to challenge them to go the extra mile, to make their patterns more complex, to put more of themselves into their work. “If you don’t challenge and push yourself when you’re a student, you won’t get the same opportunity to learn the skills in the workplace, when you’re bound by the look of the company you work for.” Edele, fellow fashion tutor Hannah Peirson-Harrop and their students are busy gearing up for their end-of-year show, which will form part of the Savvy 14 fashion extravaganza at Whangarei’s Old
Library on 28 November. The students will have the chance to show off their work, while Edele and Hannah will be displaying a range of “upcycled” clothing which has been specially commissioned for the show. Edele is also working with local fashion stores to ensure the best of Northland fashion is brought together on the night, giving exposure to some of the lesser-known outlets. Edele says: “The show will be a fun event for all fashion lovers. All the clothing, shoes and accessories shown will be for sale, at a discounted price for the audience. It’s a great opportunity to come along, see some great fashion and pick up on the trends for this summer, and bag yourself a bargain while supporting the local fashion trade.”
While clashing prints have been around before, this year’s new trend is using contrasting fabrics and textures to mix the conventional with the unexpected. So, for example, this summer you can safely mix sportswear with feminine lace, and still be the coolest person around.
CUT OUT THE COUTURE Another trend for this summer is cut-out couture – wearing beautiful, open-weave, lacy fabrics, often in layers. If you’re handy with a sewing machine, this is a chance for you to upcycle garments from the back of your wardrobe, and turn them into something special.
GRAB YOURSELF A BAG There’s only one bag style to hang on to this year – the grab bag. Unusual, rounded shapes with short handles, worn slung over the shoulder, will be the ones to look out for.
BRING OUT YOUR INNER BEATLE This year’s shady trend is for round, frameless “John Lennon” sunglasses – but supersized to cover a good proportion of the face.
WHEN IN ROME Dresses of all shapes are in this summer. The number one style is the one-shouldered toga dress – not for everyone, but great if you can pull it off.
WEAR YOUR HEART ON YOUR SOLES When it comes to your feet, this year’s top trend is to be jewelencrusted. And not just little ones – if you want to be bang on trend, go for shoes embellished with oversized stones, especially heart-shaped.
DRESS FOR YOUR BODY, NOT SOMEONE ELSE’S Every year, whatever styles are making the fashion headlines, the only way you’ll look good is to know what works for you. Dressing according to your shape is the number one fashion rule, always – whether you’re large or small, boyish, curvaceous or pear-shaped, and whatever your natural colouring. Don’t be afraid to be you, just exercise a bit of self-censorship and ask yourself, does that REALLY suit me?

It’s wedding season but don’t forget by KAREN MATICH, Polwarth Design
W
HEW! The Wedding Expo is behind us! A busy time for Polwarth Design persuading six great models to give up two hours of their Saturday and Sunday to don their glad rags and showcase 24 totally different looks. And a great job they did, strutting their stuff past dazzling diamond displays, designer wedding gowns, snappy photographers and magnificent table settings, to the beat of a live band, fuelled by the odd free sample of bubbles. For ‘mother-of’, the task of deciding what to wear for this occasion can range from momentous to simple, depending on their individual requirements. The ground root considerations are of course body shape, skin tone, eye colour, styles that flatter, in colours that don’t conflict with the opposing mother-of, blend with bridesmaids, and result in drop dead gorgeous photos. Not to mention colour of the shoes, fascinator or not? And whether to wear grandmother’s pearls or the chunky gold chain hubby picked up on the business trip to Dubai. Simple really? No. Because in all of this we still haven’t dealt with the most important consideration of all – individual personalities. No mother-of is ever the same. No wedding is ever the same. Every mother-of embraces the task with self-imposed rules and expectations that must meet their own approval and often that of the bride, her four sisters, the grandmother her two remaining sisters and sometimes even the father-of. So in 29 years of dressing mothers-of we’ve heard it all and love the challenge. Here’s some of the considerations — which of them can you relate to? ■ It’s not very dressy it’s a beach wedding … no rules, you can be as dressy as you like at a beach wedding ■ I don’t want to outshine the

bride … trust me you never will — they have youth on their side ■ I already have an outfit but I just wanted to see what’s come in
Exclusive
■ I want something that I can wear again … it’s all about accessories – dress up, dress down. ■ I’m only mother of the groom
…IF you want to be the moth then fine – with only sons - I’m going to be a butterfly too ■ I need something with a sleeve…It’s all about the ensemble, or try out the secret sleeves. ■ I’m getting this right now – even though my wedding isn’t until next year. Sometimes just buy it when you love it – cos they go fast. ■ I’ve just found out the ‘motherof’ is wearing the same colour… do your homework and communicate – there are many
shades of one colour. ■ My ex is going to be there with his new partner and I want to look hot! … Joseph Joseph Joseph – he’s the hottest designer around. ■ I don’t want to look like a ‘mother-of-the-bride … no rules! When you know that you’re looking great on that busy busy day – confident of your whole ensemble – you have time for others. After all it is the bride’s day.

VERY MORNING the same question: what to wear? Guessing at what we look good in isn’t the way to go. Knowing what type of figure we have have makes it all so much easier. If all the clothes in the wardrobe fit your figure type, even on a bad day you are still going to look great. Dressing women and men is my passion, and helping clients to know what looks right on them and why is part of that. Buying garments because you love them is great but if the garments don’t love your figure-type back you don’t only end up not wearing them you are wasting money. Knowing what suits you when buying garments will save money and you will feel fabulous in your clothes every time. Its is really important that, when
buying the basics — skirts, trousers, jackets and coats —you make sure they fit your figure right. These garments are the staple of every outfit and stay longer in the wardrobe. If you need to purchase quality garments then layby can make this more achievable. Setting a clothing budget helps to
‘‘
build money to help get the garments that are wanted. Set aside weekly/monthly amounts to build up your money so it’s there to purchase the piece when needed. Having money build up in a clothing budget also means if you see that something special on sale you can get it and not miss out.

New World of design by CLARE BLACKBURN
S
ustainable shopping bags designed and hand-made by NorthTec fashion students were snapped up by customers when they went on sale at Regent’s New World supermarket. One hundred of the unique calico “grab bags” were crafted by NorthTec students, following a competition sponsored by New World owners, Todd and Lillian Leathem, to design a uniquely Northland shopping carrier. Competition winner Kuulei-Aloha (Ku) Werohia took her initial design, inspired by the region’s majestic kauri trees, and adapted it for production with the assistance of fashion tutors, Edele MacDonald and Hannah Peirson-Harrop. Ku and fellow fashion student, Adriana Hayden, then worked furiously to hand-craft and package the bags for sale. Ku said it felt wonderful, but quite strange, to see her product sitting on sale in the store and being eagerly bought by shoppers. Billing the project as “Regent New World’s Next Top Designer”, the limited edition bags were sold as “hand-crafted, eco-friendly shopping bags”. Lillian Leathem said the bags, which were prominently displayed in the store, started selling as soon as the supermarket opened for business. The first customer bought four, to send overseas as gifts, and within two hours more than 20 bags had been sold. Feedback from staff was that customers “loved” the product, and with Christmas in mind, several commented that they made lovely gifts. The idea came about when Todd and Lillian Leathem sold a range of Trelise Cooper-designed shopping bags, which proved popular with the public. V
ibrant, modern and unique, boutique hair stylists Three Hairdressing on Maunu Rd are close to celebrating their first year in business and they want to thank their loyal clients for their support. While most businesses traditionally struggle in their first year, Three Hairdressing has moved forward in leaps and bounds – stocking an exclusive range of hair care products and colours, expanding their treatment options and growing their team; Three Hairdressing is taking Whangarei by storm, and there’s no sign of them slowing down anytime soon. While the salon may be new, owners Hazel Newman, Jemal Guitry and Katie Hood are certainly not. Hazel has over 14 years of hairdressing experience, while Jemal and Katie have 18 and 20 years of hairdressing experience respectively. Their dedicated team are equally as impressive, with Three’s philosophy of

These professional competitions are run by the New Zealand Association of Registered Hairdressers, and set an industry standard for leaders in hairstyling, colouring and cutting. The Three Hairdressing team took home 19 award-placings from the August 2014 competitions, 12 of those being top awards; including the Top Senior Cutting Award, won by Terri Welsh, and the Top Senior
Styling Award and Top Colour Award, both won by co-owner Hazel Newman. Hazel also won the Oceanic Hairdressing Award; which qualifies her to compete in the national finals in Wellington in November. This level of success at the NZARH awards is a true indication of the passion and creativity of the entire team at Three Hairdressing. Three Hairdressing also

A gift that could Metal allergy common save your life cause of dermatitis H HERBAL HEALTH
by SUE NEWMAN
In our everyday lives, we come into contact with a host of different substances and environmental elements that can have an adverse effect on our skin.
Herbalist LES helps address health issues the natural way
I have a terrible problem with itchy red flaky skin, particularly on my hands, behind my ears and in my eyebrows. It’s driving me crazy. At first the doctor thought it was eczema but now he seems to think it’s more likely to be dermatitis due to some kind of allergy. He has offered me hydrocortisone cream but I would like a more natural option. Can you please help? Often dermatitis and eczema are considered similar kinds of skin problems but in reality it’s not true. Dermatitis is an acute skin condition, while eczema can be termed as a chronic condition. Dermatitis is a skin condition having symptoms such as inflammation, swelling, itching, burning sensation, redness around the skin and so on. Those suffering from severe and acute dermatitis can also have symptoms like blisters, crusting and scaling of skin. Acute dermatitis can occur as a result of an allergy to any number of ingredients found in soaps, shower gels, shampoos etc. One of the worst culprits is sodium lauryl (laureth) sulphate, (which is a foaming agent found in almost everything) and when you think about how often we expose our hands and faces to this it’s no surprise that conditions like dermatitis get worse. SLS is not good for skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema and psoriasis. In our everyday lives, we come into contact with a host of different substances and environmental elements that can have an adverse effect on our skin. Sometimes when we have an allergic reaction to something, we might not be able to determine the source of the problem or it could take several days from the point of contact for a reaction to occur
on our skin, which makes tracing the source extremely difficult. Perhaps the most common cause of contact dermatitis is metal allergy, with nickel being the most prevalent of all metal allergens. Almost every metal contains some amount of nickel, with costume jewellery and cell phones among the leading causes of allergic reactions. A person with sensitivity to nickel may not be able to wear jewellery that contains nickel or may find that holding a cell phone up against the ear will result in a rash and irritation where the device comes into contact with the skin - in which case a hands-free device, such as a plastic earpiece, or covering the metal with a plastic case will help. Even gold is a fairly common allergen and can cause an adverse reaction in some people. It has also been shown that people who have atopic dermatitis can suffer from a shortage of Vitamin D, so supplementation with this may help. Themba herbal skin cream can be very effective for dermatitis and is very gentle on the skin as it doesn’t contain any harsh chemicals. Themba is based on the fruit of the South African kigelia tree with the addition of healing plants and oils such as lavender, calendula and aloe. Use at least twice daily on affected areas. For chemical free cleaning products Ecobasik have a great range and the wonderful Eco-beings also make a brilliant ‘sensitive’ soap in liquid form. ■ For more information or to order these products, and Themba cream visit www.littleherbalcompany.co.nz Vitamin D and Themba also available from Hardys in Kerikeri and Greenworld in Kaikohe. appy 45th birthday and welcome to the world of mammograms. Claiming your gift of a free mammogram is as simple as dialling 0800 270-200, enrolling with BreastScreen Aotearoa and they’ll do the rest. It’s a gift that comes without hooks; all you need to do is hand over your breasts for a brief time to be squashed, squeezed and photographed. You might not enjoy it, but you’ll endure it, knowing you’ve signed on for something that may well save your life. Your 45th birthday present is a gift like no other, it keeps on giving, every second year until you turn 69 you’ll receive a reminder with an appointment time that should see you head for the mobile screening clinic at Ashburton Hospital. For the uninitiated, there’s a certain amount of fear heading into mammogram number one. While the process is the same for every woman, the experience is different. Mammogram veterans joke about the “boob squeeze” but your reaction to having a stranger touch your breasts and man (woman) handle them into peculiar positions is different for every woman. This is as far removed from a romantic, sexual experience involving breasts as it can get. While it’s not unpleasant, it’s definitely not enjoyable; while it’s not comfortable, it’s definitely not painful.
your boobs are lifted and placed on a metal plate, each one poked and prodded into the correct position. To ensure maximum exposure to x-ray, your body is also bent into odd positions. When the radiographer is happy, the squashy part starts. I’d be lying if I said it was fun. It’s not. It’s a weird sensation as your boob is squashed almost flat. Is it painful? No. Is it uncomfortable? Yes, but only for a brief moment. ■ X-ray taken, the pressure comes off, but the relief is temporary. Each breast is squashed and squeezed twice top down and sideways. With the fourth image taken, the x-ray is checked, not for bumps and lumps, but to ensure the images are easy to read.
HERE’S HOW IT GOES: ■ You arrive at your scheduled appointment, you’re greeted by a smiling receptionist and you sign off the paperwork. And then you wait – nervously.
■ And that’s it. You get dressed and return to work. The next bit is in many ways the hardest. It’s the waiting. Your x–ray is read by the experts and within two weeks you’ll receive a letter from BreastScreen Aotearoa with the results. If you’re given the all clear, then you can forget about the whole process for two years, if not, then what you do next will be carefully spelled out. Like a smear test, the mammogram is part of the territory that comes with being a woman. The trade-off with the blokes is the prostate health check. None of those procedures are pleasant, but they’re all there to provide early detection of abnormalities that could indicate cancer; they’re all there to save your life.
■ Your radiographer calls you in (smiling), asks you to undress to the waist – yes this is not a clothes optional exercise, however, there is a hospital gown you can don. It flaps forlornly, wide open in the front, but it does offer some cover, wards off the naked chill and, for those with less-than-perfect bodies, it protects the radiographer from a full on view of the sheer awfulness of ageing boobs. (And yes, the radiographers are usually young and will inevitably have a pair of perky breasts under their white coats). ■ And now the fun part. One at a time,

infrequent. Matai was an important timber tree for both Maori and early European settlers. Maori used the wood for canoes, adze hafts, palisade construction and carving. The wood is fine and straight with a golden/red colour and was used for weatherboards, joinery and makes beautiful hardwearing flooring. Matai has a dramatic bark with a distinctive ‘hammered’ look that appears as the old bark falls off the mature trunk revealing the dark red new bark. Matai is a hardy, slow growing, interesting tree which provides food for pigeons as well as being an excellent timber tree for the next generation. At Alter-Natives we have matai available in sizes ranging from 1 to 1.5m high and priced from $8.50.

atai is a hardy, slow growing forest tree reaching 25–30m and with a trunk up to 1.25m in diameter. It will tolerate infertile and damp soils while needing some sun and moisture. It is notable for being one of the New Zealand trees that undergoes a distinct juvenile stage, which differs radically from that of the adult. Juvenile plants are multi branched, with long, slender, flexible interlacing branches and sparsely carried brown leaves. This growth habit can persist until the tree attains a height of around 6 m. There is a gradual change then to the adult form, as it starts to grow into a large round headed tree with longer leaves of dark green above and greyish-green below. Matai produces succulent, black fruit eaten by native pigeons that, looks like a very small plum. Seed fall is in autumn, the second year after flowering, and seed years are

JUST FOR KIDS Play in the Garden: Fun Projects for Kids to Enjoy Outdoors by Sarah O’Neil New Holland, $34.99 ....................................... I remember as a kid being given my own little section of our very big family vege garden. I don’t, however, remember doing anything with it at all. Author Sarah O’Neil says kids don’t have the patience or the interest in having their own patch, they just want to have fun. So she has produced a book encouraging kids to do just that — outdoors and in the vege patch. Following the clever projects in this book your youngsters will soon be growing beans on a teepee big enough to have a wee picnic under; square cucumbers, perfect for the school sandwich; and much much more. Mum and Dad will find this book just as exciting as the kids.

Night Sky Watcher by Raman Prinja, New Holland, $19.99 ....................................... Another great book for the whole family. Prinja takes us on a guide of the magical night sky. With tips on where to sit yourself for the best advantage, what you need, and what you are looking at this book is the ultimate guide on how to spot stars and planets. It features fun facts and activities and explores everything from constellations to lunar eclipses
and meteor showers. This would also be a fabulous book for school projects. The book is in a clear plastic zip bag so will be safe from the damp outside. All you need now is a clear night sky and a pair of binoculars. — Colleen Thorpe

This book has that sturdy construction parents of boisterous young children appreciate. The short and simple sentences are perfect for children learning to read and the illustrations are simple and uncluttered. If your child is a fan of the Three Little Pigs fairy tale then they
will love this. From my son’s perspective: the story had on each page a similar sentence structure, which made it easier for a beginner reader to follow, and the pictures clearly showed the ‘‘new’’ word for each page. My son followed the story all the way to the end without losing interest, but found the last page with the big bad wolf scary.

Go Home Flash by Ruth Paul, Scholastic $19.50 ....................................... Flash is a cute wee dog who just wants to get out the gate. But his family is busy: Mum is shopping, Dad is working, and the kids are at school. He tries to go to work with Dad, but gets told go home; he tries to shop with Mum, but . . . yep: go home, Flash. When he turns up at school after delving
into a smelly rubbish bin he definitely gets told to go home. But when the family get home at night Flash is nowhere to be found. It’s a simple rhyming story that the little ones will quickly learn to read for themselves.

Conrad Cooper’s Last Stand by Leonie Agnew Penguin, $19.99 ....................................... Conrad Cooper is troubled. His mum and stepdad have been arguing, and his stepdad is really grumpy, even though Conrad has been diligently completing all the tasks on his star chart to keep him happy. Little Conrad wants to make things better. Above all, he wants his mum to be happier, but what can he do? At school, Conrad’s teacher tells a story about Tane, the god of the forest. Conrad decides to ask Tane for help, but all his friends laugh at him. He’s a little Pakeha, so why would a Maori god be interested in helping him? This is a tale which manages to weave a Pakeha boy in with a Maori god, a marriage on the rocks, a doomed pohutakawa tree, and the Bastion Point Occupation in 1977 — and provide a wonderful conclusion. Conrad Cooper is loveable, naive and trusting, and endlessly hopeful. Conrad Cooper’s Last Stand is aimed at middle-grade readers, but there’s much for everyone here.

Far North graduating applied art students will be showcasing their work at an end-of-year exhibition at Northtec’s Kerikeri campus on November 14. The 13 students from Hokianga, Kaitaia, Whangaroa, Kerikeri and Ohaeawai have put together an eclectic collection encompassing many genres. It was only last year that the art departments at both Rawene and Kerikeri were looking to close. But with hard work from both students and tutors alike, as well as many volunteer hours the campuses can continue to offer art-related courses. The November exhibition includes sculptures of wood, glass, ceramics and metal plus painting and prints using surfaces as diverse as leaves, timber, paper and canvas. Entitled 13 degrees North the exhibition will have an opening from 4pm on the 14th,with wine and nibbles and will be open every day from 9am-3pm until Sunday, November 23.

The exhibition features five minimalist black paintings by Ralph Hotere displayed with Michael Parekowhai’s sculpture – a carved Steinway concert piano He Korero. What makes this exhibition one of a kind are the layers of interpretation offered through the contrasts and conversations between Hotere’s black paintings and Parekowhai’s sculpture, exploring ideas of the minimal and the ornate, poetry and performance, the subdued subtle uses of black and the firey boldness of red. Parekowhai frequently works with the idea of art as performance in his practice and the full experience of He Korero can only be realised when the piano is played. As part of the exhibition the art museum has developed an extended music programme with live music performed in the gallery every weekend featuring local musicians’ responses to

Black Rainbow. Visitors are invited to experience He Korero performed as intended by the artist, while contemplating the echoes of sound and silence resonating in the depth of Hotere’s black paintings. Musicians will perform short musical sets featuring a range of styles including jazz, improvisation, classical,
contemporary, New Zealand as well as international composers. Performers will include soloists, bands and ensembles: About Time Jazz Trio, Terry Gill, Opera North, Whangarei Youth Music, Ponzie Scheme, Kindness of Strangers, Makareta Umbers and Sistema. Also accomplished teachers Nick Grew and Astuko
WEEKEND MUSIC MIX
Fukuoka, talented young pianists from local high schools, plus Rachel Diamond and Andy Easterbrook performing hits from the Whangarei Theatre Company’s highly popular production, ‘Chicago’. Each performer adds a new dimension to the exhibition creating an experience that is unique to each moment and unique to Whangarei. Taking audiences on a multi-sensory journey of music and visual art, the music programme is highlighted by an evening concert with renowned musicians NZTrio, performing selected pieces in a programme specifically designed for Black Rainbow. Inspired by the concepts behind the art works, NZTrio’s performance will
explore the juxtaposition of European roots and contemporary New Zealand culture, the old and the new. The music programme is one of the art museum’s most dynamic public programmes to date bringing together visitors and community groups through art and music, made possible by Hotere’s and Parekowhai’s inspiring art works. The art museum would like to extend a special thank you to coorganisers Chart North for making the music programme possible, and all the musicians sharing their talent and enthusiasm in creating such a unique experience of Black Rainbow. Audiences are an important element for both Hotere and Parekowhai – their art works seek to engage visitors through changing the way we experience and view art works. The fine subtleties of Hotere’s black paintings draws the eye into the surfaces, each time revealing a shadow of something hidden, while He Korero creates a visual feast that changes personality with each pianist’s music. The art museum invites visitors to complete the link between artist, performer and audience and experience the music programme throughoutthe exhibition on until 7 December 2014. — Yu-San Kang

Our little miss is here! Wife, mother, journalist ... PHILIPPA MANNAGH reveals the highs and lows, and the challenges in life ... WILLOW MAE MANNAGH October 14, 12:04pm, 9pd 4oz! Little Miss Mannagh began her important arrival into this world around 4am. By 6am I knew she was on her way, I also knew it was about to be the school morning rush and as I held my stomach with each contraction I panicked about how this was going to work! After a midwife call and arrangements for big brother and sister where made the big two were (for the first time in their lives) woken up and dragged out of bed, then hurried off to breakfast club with toothbrushes in hands. Due to small complications my aim for a home birth quickly changed direction. I looked at the birthing pool that was set up, the candles and music list and although it didn’t work out that way, I found myself grateful heading to somewhere familiar and in my mind for what had lead up to labour, safe. We hurtled through town. I was sure I was going to be the next, “Baby born in the car,” story. The contractions were so strong already, I was desperately planning in my head how to deliver my own baby in the front seat By the time I arrived in the delivery ward, things had calmed down and the following few hours were amazing. I have heard from mothers who say they enjoyed labour, that they felt little pain or were sent to a peaceful state within themselves and to tell the truth I could never see how this could be the case. Labour sucked!
However, over this time leading up to the delivery stage I did experience this. The warm light of the spring morning sun shone on my face, I focused on my breathing which had let me down previous times and I soaked up every feeling, every rise and fall of my tightenings and used all my senses to enjoy what was to be my very last time. When it was time to meet her, I felt things change. It got harder and the last stage left me exhausted and silently panicking. Our big girl needed out quick smart by delivery time and a bit of a helping hand as she found herself stuck and the midwife struggled to find a heartbeat. The journey of our precious Willow Mae flashed before my eyes as I thought back on every story I shared, every thought, every comment I had made whilst riding our emotional roller coaster. I gathered up every last strength I held deep within as a mother, every power from our unconditional love, every raw determination that only a mother possesses and with a last primal shout our beautiful third child was delivered into my arms. Our eyes met. We had made the first leg of the journey together. An unbreakable unit of mother, father and child and a beautiful story of how the things in life that we can’t plan or are out of our control are often the best things to ever happen to us. Instantly, my feelings changed to the other extreme from the beginning of the year. She was always in the picture now, a perfect fit to our family… all in those first
Arrows best kept away from my bow JO DANILO escaped to Northland from wintry England three years ago and finds the Kiwi way of life refreshingly different. She shares with SAVVY readers the things that make her stop and smile. A (very) amateur archer back in England, I wasn’t allowed to bring my blunted arrows into New Zealand as they were classed as weapons. My bow was essentially ‘just a stick’, so that was okay. It was a blow because I wasn’t sure I‘d be able to find arrows in a small Northland town, archery being such an obscure sport. When we got to our new home, I noticed a ‘Hunting and Fishing’ shop in town. And lo and behold, there were stacks of different arrows with a variety of lethal, decidedly non-blunt, tips. The assistant came up and said ‘What kind of arrows do you need?’. ‘I’m not sure,” I said. “Well, what do you want to kill?’ she asked, and looked even more surprised than I did when I blurted out ‘I don’t want to kill anything!”. Her thoughts went unspoken, but her expression
said it all: So why on earth are you in a Hunting shop? The hunting side of New Zealand culture soon became hard for us soft, sensitive Poms to ignore. Magazines on the racks with pictures of huge boar slung over hunter’s shoulders, dead animals tied to the front of trucks, men walking around with gun bags and hunting dogs. In a ‘Hot Babes’ photo competition run by a national radio station, the bikini babes on beaches were beaten handsdown by a girl with a dead pig on her back! Four years have passed and I’ve never bought those arrows. Probably just as well... during a recent visit to the archery range at Marty’s Golf Cafe, north of Kerikeri, my arrows went everywhere but into the target. Probably safer for everyone if my bow remains ‘just a stick’.
few seconds. Life is an extraordinary process of twists and turns that we can never foresee. In this case, the shock of a lifetime turned into the biggest blessing we have ever experienced and I’m thankful every day that I look into these
blue dependent eyes that our plans were not adhered to but someone much greater than us had a bigger plan…. better than what we had come up with. As I stretch out on my bed and listen to the gentle snuffling noises coming from the bassinet, I can reflect upon the last ten months. When I think back to February 2014 I am sharply reminded of my feelings of shock, denial and to be honest, as I have been throughout this journey… my disbelief that I was pregnant again. But from one coo, one grasp of the finger and one second of eye contact everything changed and I would wish this type of happiness and completeness upon anyone searching for it. Thank you for following my journey. Little Miss Expecting has now come to an end but Little Miss Frugal will continue with blog updates and stories on how this journey continues. Take time to stop and think DIANNE HARRIS is a budget advisor for the Anglican Care Centre Christmas is coming upon us at a rate of knots. So many of us worry about how much money we’ve got to spend, and who we need to buy for, but before we get started let’s just take a step back and rethink about what it really means to give a gift. ‘‘Too often, we measure our gifts against the world, not against our hearts. As we count down to Christmas, reach for simplicity: simple gifts, gifts of time and love and friendship. A batch of biscuits. A favorite book, re-wrapped and handed on to a friend who will treasure it. Board games that bring the family together around the kitchen table. The spirit of the season is in the simplicity ...’’
— Organised Christmas Cynthia Ewen Financial over commitment is one of the biggest sources of stress – that’s not saying you can’t have fun and enjoy
Christmas, its just being prepared to say “no, maybe next year”.
RECIPE Do you know those desserts that as soon as you taste it, it
brings back memories? The recipe I’m sharing with you does that to me — here’s another of those old favourites. Lemon Pineapple cheesecake 1 pkt round wine biscuits crumbled (food processors are great for this) add to this 1⁄2 tsp cinnamon and 5-6oz of melted butter. Press this into a baking paper prepared dish. (I use a lamington baking tray) Drain a small tin of crushed pineapple and set aside. Mix together 1 lemon jelly with 1 dsp lemon juice and 1 cup of hot water and let cool. Beat together a small carton of cream cheese with 1⁄2 cup sugar and 1 tsp vanilla. To this add the cooled jelly, beat to combine. In a separate bowl whip up 300mls of cream with a tsp of vanilla. Fold the whipped cream into the lemon mixture, add the drained crushed pineapple and fold into fluffy mixture. Pour this mixture onto the prepared biscuit base and put into the fridge to set. Cut into slices and decorate. ■ With the leftover filling mix (and there will be some) you could serve it in a glass, make up a bit more of the crumble topping and sprinkle it on the top.
