ow did we suddenly arrive at November?

I happened to have an interesting conversation with some strangers the other night at a party. This question was thrown out there, “What are your two proudest achievements in 2016?” and you only had 30 seconds to answer.

As we went around the table, it was clear that all the mothers in the group naturally put it back onto their kids, raising the baby, celebrating a second birthday… making it through. However, to come up with something specific to them and them alone, there was silence. I knew my turn was coming. I also knew that I had experienced the biggest year for personal achievements. I could think of more than two, until… “Your turn, go!” Nothing. I fell back on; “My kids birthday.” This was true, but it wasn’t my own. Then later, when I did think of something (after my time was up) I decided that I couldn’t possibly say this as it would seem very tall poppy of myself. Why is it that we struggle to acknowledge and share our wins with people as naturally as we can complain and share our grumbles? I was fascinated by this healthy wake-up call and it was a good reminder that as the end of the year quickly approaches, do take the time to think about the things you’ve done and are proud of. Then, for goodness sake, share them with others! What are your proud moments of 2016?

OUR PEOPLE

The smiling face behind the Artisan Fair He toi whakairo, he mana tangata. “Where there is artistic excellence, there is human dignity”.

Hooked up to a Vitamin C drip in Kamo, I was warned by Kaari Schlebach that her voice may go in and out a bit as her body did its thing.

P

ersonally fascinated with this intervening health option, I was interested to hear about Kaari’s recent buying trip to Thailand, India and Nepal for Himalayan Trading Post. With the harmful sprays and pollution prevalent in these countries, this is one of her preventive procedures to stay healthy and strong. Our conversation immediately brought out Kaari’s passion and the heart of why she does what she does. She loves people and where we are fortunate enough to live - Whangarei. “There is just so much going on in these countries, so much poverty and pollution. We are so unbelievably lucky to live here in this beautiful place,” she says. “It’s easy to take things for granted. For example, in Nepal we see children running around playing but lots of them have masks over their faces because the air is so toxic. It’s hard to comprehend.” Here in Northland, it was this love of people and place 15 years ago, that saw Kaari spending many a weekend over the summer months running the popular Artisan market for the community. What started out as an idea developed from the Growers Market, grew to a thriving market community of stall holders on the Canopy Bridge years later.

Kaari’s mentor along the way, Growers Market founder Robert Bradley, encouraged her to develop her vision which was to co-ordinate a quality market for the community to enjoy. One that provided a platform for talented artisans and individuals to come forward and work together in a supportive environment. “The Artisans Fair holds a strong sense of community,” says Kaari. Initially set up in the Forum North car park, Kaari used a small budget for marketing and some guidelines to go forward with. It quickly grew and shifted to the library courtyard which was a fun spot but at times a wind funnel for the group. The Rose Gardens hosted the Artisan Fair’s for a couple years, under the beautifully aged trees, the sky roof and open air. This was a special spot she says, but when an invitation came through from the council to hold them on the Canopy Bridge we knew we had finally found our permanent place. As she now passes the reins over to Event Manager Jodie Hannam, Kaari is confident that the feeling will remain the same and that the much loved community event has a positive future. “I had an overwhelming moment at the handover, but I am just so grateful for the support I have received over all

these years, and now thrilled for everyone involved,” she says. “I believe that every business or project has a time limit for someone and I am privileged to have contributed to Whangarei growth and to get the market established.” “I was waiting for the right person to take over the reins so I made it known last season. Jodie came along, and I am so pleased as she has the skill, energy and passion to develop the event further.” The changes have come at the right time, now with the management of The Himalayan Trading Post and the Buddhist Centre here in Whangarei and all her other community work. She’s looking forward to her first summer weekends off for a long time and especially not worrying about the weather.

Through friendship, coffee groups, retreats, encouragement and a shoulder to cry on. “We have designed this as a resource for all women as we are all at risk of breast cancer.” “To us at Breast Cancer Support Northland, this is one of the most important factors. JANUARY Caroline

“Try to stay positive, help those around you and be an inspiration to give other people hope!” Hi, I’m Caroline Thomas aged 53. Married to Paul and have 3 lovely boys, Jack (24), Adri (22) and Max (16). I have always led an active lifestyle, love the outdoors, beach, biking, walking, gardening etc. So life seemed to “ turn to custard” when I found a small lump in my left breast which required intervention. The build up to surgery was immensely stressful, lots of sleepless nights, midnight baking, walks before dawn and bucket loads of tears. In my job as a registered nurse I am exposed to a lot of new cancer diagnosis, but to now be on the receiving side was a real learning curve. I think the way I got through it was not making it common knowledge and surrounding myself with a small group of positive people: friends, family and colleagues. I steered well away from anyone negative and took pleasure in the small, normal, everyday things in life. I also have great faith in our public health sector as we are so very lucky to have such a dedicated, caring team looking after us. Mid November 2014 I had my double mastectomy and chose not to have a reconstruction. Five months later we tramped the Milford track ( with backpacks) and walked the Abel Tasman, it was

great to have this to look forward to during my recovery from the surgery.

FEBRUARY Jackie

“She stood in the storm and when the wind did not blow her way, she adjusted her sails” Secretary - BCSNT My name is Jackie and I am a Tenancy Manager with Housing NZ. I was diagnosed with breast cancer 3 years ago at the age of 46. My treatment plan was chemo, then a mastectomy followed by radiation. Having cancer makes you realise life is short and family is important so live life, have no regrets and embrace your loved ones, we are here for a good time, not a long time!

MARCH Andrea

“Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it so seriously” Andrea Diagnosed on my first mammogram with a lump that could not be felt, and I got the hat trick, double mastectomy, chemo and radiation. A good friend gave me this quote…..

“I’ve heard there are troubles of more than one kind Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I’ve bought a big bat and I’m all ready you see, Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me” Dr Seuss

APRIL Dianne

“Sometimes you have to go through things, not around them” Dianne Cunningham Trustee - BCSNT Age: 53 yrs. Diagnosed in November 2012 at age 49 with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma and Invasive Lobular Carcinoma in Left Breast. Underwent mastectomy with TRAM Flap Reconstruction. I was diagnosed only 12 weeks after a clear mammogram and ultrasound as I was concerned that things were not right. My advice to all women – trust your instinct, no one knows your body like you do, and have regular mammograms and checks. I made an informed decision not to have chemotherapy and am happy to say that I am 4 years cancer free. The support I received from my husband Richard, my kids and friends was what kept me strong.

New arrived at Polwarth Design – Indigo+Co is a lifestyle brand that offers affordable casual luxury with a modern sensibility. Come and discover the beautiful summer collection of relaxed everyday essentials that combine natural fabrics sourced from around the world and premium finishes. Designed and created in Australia.

All in the Family WITH POLWARTH DESIGN

Spanning three decades, Polwarth Design has always been a family affair. Emerging on the fashion scene in the 80’s amid stirrup pants and shoulder pads, in a converted garage in Ruawai, Polwarth Design began as a Father, Mother and Daughters’ affair. Designing our own label, incorporating ‘made to measure’ garments cemented, our fashion pathway and even now we can still spot a 30 inch waist and a 44 inch hip at 30 metres.

T

he shift into fashion retail, at its cutting edge, due to the untimely death of our mother, marked the beginning of the sister act for

Polwarth Design. Like Canadian Geese, we’d take turns at the helm, as we sourced labels and built clientele. With eight children between us, the lead often changed, but the phone was never far away. Not that we always agreed with the other’s decisions of course, or their buying. The ‘who the hell bought that?’ sale at the end of each season was usually a telling one. Being twins in business is colourful. We’re alike but we’re different. Yin and yang. Fortunately our differences balance out. With the addition of younger sister Brenda to our Dargaville shop, there’s almost a triplet feel about it. We’re tarred with the same brush and don’t realise how alike we are until we’re together, usually roaring at a shared joke nobody else gets. We’ve even been known to rush for identical garments and to ask the same question with the matching enthusiasm, without knowing the other has already asked it.

Naturally, because we are close, we don’t agree on all things, so when at logger heads, alternatives are generally made abundantly loud and clear. There’s no beating about the bush. The sparks fly, and then its coffee time – depending on the hour of course. Every day is different at Polwarth Design. You never know who is going to walk in the door and you never try to guess their story. Sometimes it’s a cuppa at 10am and other times its lunch at 4pm. Existing for this length of time in the fickle world of retail clothing can be accredited to fashion passion; but more importantly for us, it can be accredited to the gregarious personality gene that loves to chat, laugh, listen and socialise every day!! We’ve been doing that with you for thirty years and we love what we do!!! We’re not doing it alone though. A huge thank you to all of our loyal customers and staff members who have come into our lives at Polwarth Design and been a part of our family over the last 30 years.

eading into a warmer new season and after years of wearing black on black, I knew I needed some direction in my wardrobe. My first stop, Stacey Speedy, Truly You Personal Stylist and learning what actually looked good against my skin. It was interesting to discover some new rules. I found certain colours that I can do without and a new appreciation on what really looked good on me. Over the years of being mum and focusing on everyone else but myself, it was clear that I had done what many of us do and reach for our go-to’s which we think will flatter us more being dark in colour. Stacey soon expanded on her findings after a professional consultation in the comfort of my dining room. Over a cup of tea and a friendly laugh, I looked through the colour wheel to

learn more about this side of fashion. Within an impressive summary, I was educated that my colouring is warm/ clear, with warm undertones. Therefore balancing this by choosing colours that have yellow undertones. Contrasting garments should be at a medium level and I had a run down on the neutral colours to use (instead of black) where possible. Golds, coffee browns, wood, golden browns work ideally with my light skin. This went on to jewellery choices and lipstick colours. Now I look at my colour choices in an entirely different way and it has taken precious time back so I am not second guessing or choosing the wrong colour for me. Next, I think I need a wardrobe clean out!

Accessorise a mood BY KATE MCGRATH

T

here is nothing sexier than a woman who is feels confidant and ‘on top of things’. When using essential oils aromatically, they have an almost instant effect on our body, as our sense of smell is the only direct external influence on our central nervous system. One of the things that I LOVE about essential oil diffuser necklaces is that they allow you to literally accessorise a mood! Choose your oil or oils the same way you choose your outfit – because it makes you feel amazing. Whether you want something light and refreshing, sexy and sultry or fun and floral, there are endless combinations with which you can create your own signature scent. Citrus oils have a fantastic, fresh and uplifting summery scent, but they are also photosensitive, so it is incredibly important that if you use them topically (on your skin) that you avoid direct sunlight for at least 24 hours. Given that we are heading into the summer months, using citrus oils on a

diffuser necklace either on the outside of your clothing, or even tucked into your top will ensure your skin’s safety. Another important factor in using essential oils is that you choose a diffuser necklace that is made of natural, organic compound like volcanic stones, copper, stainless steel, glass and leather. Unlike most commercial perfumes, doTERRA’s oils are 100% free from synthetic chemical, which is reassuring when you consider the physical interaction they have on your central nervous system.

The Lowdown on Cosmetic Injections: Everything you need to know before your first appointment CACI WHANGAREI TALKS TO SAVVY READERS

J

enny Lloydd from Caci Whangarei talks to Savvy readers about appearance medicine.

The thought of cosmetic injections can sound scary, with images of large needles and overdone celebrities coming to mind. However it’s far more common than you’d think. In fact appearance medicine is by far the most common of all non-surgical procedures globally and Caci are the largest appearance medicine providers in the Southern Hemisphere. Here’s everything you need to know to put your mind at ease before your first appointment. What is appearance medicine and where can you get done? When used cosmetically appearance medicine temporarily reduces the action of treated muscles, resulting in softer lines or wrinkles in the overlying skin The most popular treatment areas are: · Frown lines · Forehead lines · Crows feet around the eyes Dermal filler, an injectable gel made from hyaluronic acid- is a natural substance in your skin. It is used to plump and restore lost volume. It is often used in the lower part of the face to enhance the lips or smooth out lines from the nose to the mouth. Who can have cosmetic injections done? Cosmetic injections are suitable for most people and there is no ideal age to start, although treatments are more effective on less developed lines. During your

initial consultation, your Caci Treatment Coordinator will talk you through the options, recommend a treatment and ensure you are comfortable. What happens at the appointment? After a consultation you will be booked in with a Registered Nurse. The nurse will then inject a tiny amount directly into the muscles of the area you would like treated. The treatment is quick and only takes around 10-15 minutes. Fear of needles? No problem! If you’re nervous around needles or injections, there’s no need to worry! The needles used are very fine. Most people describe the experience as uncomfortable rather than painful and usually the discomfort is a lot less than expected. Cosmetic injection treatments are very quick to perform and are over in no time at all. Are there any side effects? It is a simple procedure which has little to minor side effects. After the treatment, you may experience slight redness in the treated areas, this should go away within 15-20 minutes. Some people also experience a minor headache and bruising. How long do treatments last? Results vary from person to person, but generally lasts around three months. Most people report that they find with regular treatments the results last longer. How much does it cost? It depends on what you want to achieve and the areas you wish to treat. At Caci we aim to make all our services affordable and have developed interest free payment plans to allow you to spread the cost of treatments throughout the year.

for Your Age Charmaine Soljak the local radio announcer from The Hits shares her views on injectable cosmetics and her wonderful experience with Face Doctors Whangarei.

Before Treatment

In the last 3 years I’ve noticed myself thinking “I look tired”. Age has a funny way of sneaking up on us and I’ve been talking with my eyes and brows for most of my adult life. I seriously have noticed my frown which is mainly due to my intense concentration when I’m in front of computer screens. It’s funny when you think of “what will people think” and the long and short of that is, the older I get the more I don’t care. I love all the pamper stuff and admire how others look all the time. When I was asked would I consider injectable treatment to take a few lines off my forehead and softening my frown and laughing eyes, I thought – heck yes. Because I don’t ever feel the age I’ve arrived at. My role means camera’s are in my face more than ever and admittedly I’m a bit vain. When my 26 year old daughter and son-in-law announced their pregnancy news, I thought I’m not going to be a “butter-puff” Nan who is physically weak. I’m going to run, jump and lift my mokopuna. I set out to run my first half marathon. Accomplished tick, vain tick, agile tick. Our company deals with so many businesses it’s easy to find out who’s in the top three of a category, the best, or an outstanding service provider with a great reputation. I made an appointment with The Face Doctor for a consultation. Some people conceal their beauty treatments. I’m the exact opposite. I stood in middle of our office having an open conversation with 10 people about my appointment. My theory is if I share stuff I do, then there’s nothing to hide, and I work hard for what I have. Sure people will judge and some women do that nasty spitting at vanity in other women. Those same women probably wouldn’t mind

if everyone was frumpy, grey haired and wore elastic topped pants. So given I just gave you a free eyebrow lift just now... here’s how the consultation appointment went. I’d never been into The Face Doctors Whangarei before. OMG it’s the epitome of elegance! So Italian and fancy with everything decorative “custom made”, lighting, exquisite mosaic tiles... delightfully it is a full-on visual feast that exudes class and luxury. Their female doctor, who works as an appearance medicine doctor for over 10 years, does not rush a consultation and emphasises her philosophy “Less is More”. She strives to have clients look their best for their age and ensures they retain natural facial expressions after any treatment. Her natural radiance instils confidence. She also has an impressive line-up of letters after her name and promotes and markets her personally endorsed skincare and makeup products. The doctor is highly regarded in her field and was recently invited to speak at a Conference in Australia. Ideally I was after a softening of my frown lines, forehead and crow’s feet. I was told of all the possible side effects which we discussed thoroughly. I loved they have made payments so do-able. Easy payment options include pay up front, weekly payments, monthly, or whatever works. No contracts. Having exhausted my question answer session I chose the injectable treatment. It was pain free and that may differ for others. I thanked the doctor and the lovely ladies then made my way back to work. Wow that was low key and easy. In the conversations, I picked up more men are seeking a softening to their faces so they’re more

open and fresh in their faces especially in sales roles, investments or frontline people. That reflects the new men’s skin industry which has taken off too. Confidence depends on your interpretation. Age the way you like save your judgments for yourself and raise others around you up. Beauty or for me “confidence” comes from being kind in our dealing with other people and keeping nasty comments to yourself. So I’m delighted with this softening I’ve started to see. Fresher face, nicer without my harsh frown. If you’re inclined to give yourself a fresher look I was delighted with my experience and loved the idea of easy payment options which feels like it was designed for especially for me. Take a peek at www.facedoctorsnorthland.co.nz, call and make an appointment 09 430 2201. I imagine you’ll be as impressed as I am. Oh and hey. Here’s the before and after pictures.

tudying hairdressing or beauty therapy at NorthTec could be your ticket to a great career anywhere in the world. You’ll start with the New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Salon Support), a level 3 qualification which will introduce you to the world of professional styling. Based in our purpose-built, working salon, you’ll start practising your skills on mannequin heads before moving on to paying clients, under the supervision of our experienced tutors. You’ll learn key techniques in styling, hair design and colouring. You’ll also learn all about client consultation procedures, customer service and hair products. After completing the level 3 qualification, the next step is the level 4 New Zealand Certificate in Hairdressing (Emerging Stylist). You’ll carry out foundation scissor and razor cutting, and you’ll also advance your knowledge of colouring and decolouring services and learn about chemical reformation for damaged hair. Throughout the programme you’ll gain interpersonal and communication skills and develop your professional manner in the salon. By the time you’ve completed your qualification, you’ll be ready to go straight into work. NorthTec-trained hairdressers are in demand with local employers, and regularly perform well in competitions against other trainees.

You’ll be taught how to perform Swedish body massage, manicures and pedicures, plus the latest epilation techniques. You’ll become skilled at professional make-up application and will be an expert in skincare, from dealing with problem skin to providing advice on the best products for each skin type. The courses and the tutors are exceptional and in our course we get a lot of one-on-one input. “It takes more focus for me to understand and learn some of the theory like the body systems – circulatory system, digestive system, endocrine system – but the support is there and it’s good discipline. “One of the most satisfying parts of the course is working with real clients and seeing them walk out happy. HEALTH

Is this the BIGGEST health secret of them all? BY CAROLYN HANSEN

I

t’s something that sounds like a quack would support. But it’s true. There’s growing evidence that lifestyle changes such as eating a healthier diet and exercising may be enough to prevent and even treat conditions ranging from diabetes to cancer. It makes sense that prescription medications should NOT be the first treatment option when someone is on the verge of developing a sickness condition when it’s still possible to prevent it. After all, preventing is always preferable to treating disease as once symptoms present themselves they can cause even more health issues and complications that can require even more drugs to control. If you think about the illness issues that are becoming more and more prevalent in our modern world they are mostly related to eating the wrong types of foods, too much of them, avoiding

proper exercise, getting too little quality sleep and ingesting man made toxins. Would you like more energy, a more alert, nimble mind, a stronger heart, stress relief, be better armed to fight a cold, combat cancer, heart disease and diabetes and heal wounds faster? I know that this is starting to sound like a television infomercial for a sounds- too-good-to-be-true pill, but what it is, is an invitation to activate your body’s remarkable ability to heal itself — an ability that is significantly improved when you make exercise a regular part of your life. Its so effective, there is no doctor, procedure, pill, surgery, nutritional supplement or medication on the planet that even can even come close to providing all of the positive health effects exercise does. None of those things can build you a strong, energetic, disease resistant body.

Proper exercise is really nature’s ultimate medicine we know of. Exercise Heals -yet we tend to view exercise mostly as something that helps us stay fit and trim, or helps us keep our weight under control. But in reality, it has a vast range of selfhealing influences on the body. Sure, exercise builds and strengthens muscle and bone and it also changes the way your DNA behaves, making it less likely that you will get heart disease cancer or diabetes, that your arteries will harden or that you will suffer from anxiety and depression. More good news in that even in the events these or any other health issue befalls you, there is loads of strong evidence that exercise can help you deal with and bounce back from them more quickly and successfully. Boosted strength and fitness truly has over-all healing effects that work together on multiple body systems to improve physical, mental, and emotional health. In fact, proper strengthening exercise positively enhances every cell, tissue, and organ and body system. It is the stimulus the body needs – When you challenge your muscles with the right exercise “growth and repair” hormones are stimulated replacing old worn out cells and tissues with younger stronger healthier ones. If you are ready to kick your body’s own self-healing engines into high gear and benefit from healing right down at cellular level, then you need the knowledge about how to do so. It will be reassuring to know that it may very well save your life one day. That’s because it involves something that NO physician will ever be able to help you with if one day your luck runs out and you find yourself confronted by the worst possible medical news. Every Little Step Counts

BY CORINNE AUSTIN What if I was to tell you that you do not have to embark on a giant workout to feel like you’ve ‘exercised’ for the day?

W

hat if I was to tell you that you do not need to belong to a gym or enrol in a bootcamp to be ‘fit’? What if I was to tell you that our bodies are our own personal gym, and any movement we do can be likened to our own personalised bootcamp? Let’s change the way we think. Because we have access to a remarkable machine-like body that has over 640 muscles, multiple joints, ligaments and tendons, two arms and two legs – all of which whose sole purpose is to help us move. If we were meant to be dormant, docile, devicebound objects, we would have been brought into this world as sausages. Alas, we are humans equipped with a capacity to achieve an infinite and life-giving amount of movement, yet many of us are not moving anywhere near enough to successfully download all the benefits that come from an active life. We need to realise that every little bit of movement counts. And every little step counts. Every. Little. Step. Earlier this week I had one of those days where I seemed to have appointment after appointment, meeting after meeting, and I hadn’t officially booked any time for myself. I was beginning to get antsy and frustrated that I hadn’t planned some me time, or more particularly, some exercise time. So I fitted little bits in where I could... While a client was running late I managed to squeeze in a fifteen minute body weight workout focussing on upper body and abdominals (press-ups and crunches, that kind of thing). There was no real structure as such, I just created it as I went along. I also managed to sneak in about 50 (who’s counting…?) squats and 50 lunges while I waited for my dinner leftovers to heat up for lunch. That certainly let me legs know they

16 | SAVVY

needed to keep strong and physically able. But wait there’s more! And then, after I got home from the kids swimming lessons I decided to postpone the kids’ showers and dinner preparation (in the hope that I wouldn’t be confronted with ‘hanger’ from the little people in doing so) and did 10 minutes of shuttle runs on the lawn dodging doggy doo and the odd prickle plant – and even managed to have the kids chase and climb on me in the process, and therefore adding to the intensity and adventure of my original intentions.

So with no planning, with no preparation, and with no equipment – other than my own body – I managed to fit in three patches of effective movement. My body felt more free, my mind felt more relaxed, and my soul was content. Was it a ‘proper’ workout... No. Was it effective movement... Yes. And that’s all that matters! To me, it’s never a matter of when; time is not an excuse to not move. It’s a matter of how. I challenge you to think creatively about what movement you can fit in to your days.

Lifestyle Audit for a Happy Heart BY LYSA BLACK

W

ith our extended hours of sunlight bliss we seek to joyfully step outside into the glories of nature and swathe ourselves with opportunities to mingle with all the people we love. But at the same time that we open our hearts to connect we can open ourselves to overwhelm. Here are 4 tips for you to audit your lifestyle so that you can have the happiest summer yet! • Less commitment = more presence It can be tempting to capitalise on a smorgasbord of social delectable’s and unknowingly stuff your plate until the flavour of each event is lost in a sea of busyness. Being mindful to select the events that are most important to us allows us to calmly arrive, soak up the atmosphere and be fully present to bask in the joy of the occasion. • Invest love in those who love you It’s incredibly hurtful to realise that some of our friends and family members are simply not in an emotional place to return the love we extend to them. Being able to recognise

if the equilibrium in a relationship is out of balance means we can gauge how much or how less to invest ourselves in these relationships. • Balance active social time with quiet down-time For every hour you are active and social, it can create balance by giving ourselves the same amount of time to relax and recuperate. Too much of a good thing decreases our ability to enjoy it. Be mindful to watch the hours of activity and balance them with hours of calm and rest. • Be honest with those you love It’s often those closest to us that we can hide our true feelings from. Being open to speak more honestly with those we trust and know we can confide in allows us to feel seen, heard and cared for. Truly connecting heart to heart is one of the most powerful forms of love there is. May this summer be filled with special connections; love returned and balanced social calendar that your heart will love.

Identifying diabetic eye disease WITH THE EYE CENTRE Diabetic’s require an eye check to check the back of the eye (a fundus examination) at the time of diagnosis. This is particularly important in type 2 diabetes who may have a long duration of undiagnosed diabetes. The only exception to this rule is for children, who do not require examination prior to puberty. Eye disease related to diabetes include a range of conditions such as refractive changes, double vision, cataract, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. Of these conditions, diabetic retinopathy is the only one that is directly caused by diabetes and most frequently results in vision loss.

Risk factors • Duration of diabetes - Almost 80% of people, who have diabetes for 15 years or more, have some damage to the blood vessels in their retina. • High blood pressure • Kidney diseases • Pregnancy • Anaemia Diabetic retinopathy is a serious complication of diabetes and remains the leading cause of blindness among working-aged adults in the developed world. The progression of visual loss can be reduced with early detection and treatment. One third of Northland’s population live in urban Whangarei, with the remainder living in towns and rural areas across the district. Due to isolation and travel times a mobile screening programme for diabetic retinopathy was developed, to allow access for all diabetics in Northland. Mobile screening was launched in 1994, screened 450 patients in its first year. All images were assessed by (Dr Dalziel) at Whangarei Base Hospital. The mobile screening service has since grown with the population of known diabetics and today runs 22 screening clinics in 14 regions, in collaboration with local providers. GP’s can refer diabetic patients for diabetic screening photos or they can be reviewed by our local ophthalmologists in private practice.

Two Stages of Diabetic Retinopathy Non-proliferative:

• Blood vessels in the retina are damaged, they can leak fluid or bleed. This causes the retina to swell and form deposits called hard exudates, macular oedema, dot-and-blot haemorrhages, and micro aneurysms. • Macular oedema: The fluid and exudates collect at the macula (the part of the retina that allows us to see fine details), thus decreasing the vision. Macular oedema can occur without any loss of vision.

Therefore, it is very important to have routine check-ups to detect and treat these conditions at an early stage. Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy can progress to a more severe form where vessels in the retina become tortuous and a widespread picture of abnormalities are seen in the smallest vessels of the retina. 40% of affected patients will develop the most severe form of diabetic retinopathy within a year. Even with very close control some patients progress to the stage that all ophthalmologists work on preventing: proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy: • Responsible for severe visual loss. • New, fragile vessels grow on the surface of the retina. • Vessels on the retina are prone to bleeding into the vitreous, jelly in the eye and may cause traction retinal detachment • New vessels on the iris can lead to severe glaucoma. Treatment and follow up The treatment is dependent on the stage of the disease. In initial stages, it just requires periodic follow

up to look for progression of the disease. Later when the disease is more advanced he/she may decide to treat it with one or more of the following options: • Laser Treatment Laser therapy is done when there is significant maculopathy, or when there are significant new blood vessels in the retina or iris. • Anti-VEGF agents (Lucentis, Avastin, Eylea) These agents are being used in selective cases alone or in addition to laser treatment or surgery. They are injected into the eye and aid in reducing swelling at the macula. • Surgery Vitrectomy surgery and other additional procedures may be required to manage complications of diabetic retinopathy, like vitreous haemorrhage, retinal detachment or severe macular oedema, etc. Diabetes mellitus and diabetic retinopathy are progressive conditions, and regular follow-up care is crucial for detection of any changes that may benefit from treatment and prevent vision loss. You will be notified how often a review is required by the diabetic screening programme or your Ophthalmologist.

Homegrown and nutritious Name: James and Darlene Pearks Business name and how recently it was established. Healthy For You LTD Trading As Homegrown Northland we began 1 September 2016

Describe your business: We own the Homegrown Distribution Franchise for Northland. We deliver Homegrown Juices to Supermarkets, Cafes, dairies as far as Kaitaia. Homegrown is a NZ owned and operated company who have been growing oranges in Hawkes Bay, the fruit bowl of NZ, since 1969. Most orange juices in NZ are made from imported orange juice, some are even bottled overseas. This goes against Homegrown’s philosophy. They believe you can’t make great tasting nutritious juice when it has been shipped halfway around the world. So they did something about it and increased their plantings to the point where they now have the largest plantings of orange orchards in New Zealand. These orchards allow them to grow almost all the oranges that go into their juice and enables them to pick the oranges at their very best.

What can the public look forward to when

trying out your products?

What do you do in your leisure time?

Homegrown products are Raw as they go through a cold pasteurise process unlike other juices on the market that are boiled you can really taste the difference. From the quintessential Kiwi classics of our Apple and Orange, to the delicious refreshment of Grapefruit or Lime, all the way through to the nutritious Apple and Kale or our delectable Raw Fruit Smoothie. We grow or source locally (wherever possible), squeeze and deliver the best juices raw – cold pasteurised for every Kiwi to enjoy. Available in 400ml, 1 litre and 2 Litre bottles.

We have three children so enjoy family time, James cycles for fun and Darlene enjoys running and attends Core Fit. Wellness is a big part of our household.

What has been your biggest business challenge starting out and how are you tackling it? Our biggest challenge is building up our business and introducing our products to new customers. We are enjoying meeting new business owners and learning how we can best help them.

Where can they find it? Homegrown can be purchased in any supermarket and in some local cafes such as Fat Camel and Wheat Cafe we look forward to having more cafes stock Homegrown over the next few months.

What community or charity initiatives do you currently support? With only being a few months into our business we haven’t yet become involved in any community or charity initiates. However, we are a household of volunteers with Darlene being a volunteer for Parents Centre and Trade aid I am sure that an opportunity will arise so we can give back to our community.

This wall includes 10 colours, starting with the darker ones at the bottom left-hand corner then gradually lightening the colour scheme as it moves to the top right hand corner. Pop in an unexpected colour (the dusky gold) in three spots for extra accent. Wall colours are: Resene Essence, Resene Melodic, Resene Whirlwind, Resene Reflection, Resene Steam Roller, Resene Castaway, Resene Nauti, Resene Cruising, Resene Mozart and Resene Half Raven.

Ultimately adaptable, these types of colours can be used in a myriad of styles from a mid-west desert feel to this contemporary Pacifica look. Resene Rumour Has It is used on the wall; orange can be very intense but this colour has a muted ‘burnt’ edge that makes it particularly easy to be with. In the same ‘hot’ colour vein, the stools are in Resene Aloha (at back), Resene Malarkey (right) and Resene Celebrate (left and front), while the table is in soothing coffee bean Resene Sambuca. A side fence is made of bamboo panels, and painted in the classic Resene Pearl Lusta. A random length ‘deck mat’ is made of pine planks stained in Resene Woodsman Banjul. What are the best improvements to make to your home if you are looking to sell?

especially over the summer months. Investing in new outdoor furniture (that you can take with you when you move!) can really dress up your outdoor living. Privacy and shade are also important factors to consider and there are many low cost options for these at your local Bunnings or Mitre 10.

CURB APPEAL AND GARDENS –

Most buyers when seriously interested in a property will undertake a building inspection. One of the most common issues that can arise is with the roof. Make sure that there are no leaks and that it is in good condition, if really needed consider a new one, buyers will factor this into the price they are willing to pay for your property anyway.

O

ne of the most common questions I get asked when speaking to clients who are looking to sell is “Is there anything I should do to my property before I sell?” In many cases, the best thing to do is follow the simple formula of clean, de-clutter and stage the home (these are absolute essentials!) whether you do this yourself or get professional help. However sometimes there is the need to take things a step further and there are definitely some things that will make a bigger impact then others.

First impressions count and creating a big impact does not need to be expensive to be effective. Painting or replacing the front door is a fast way to instantly improve your homes appearance. Prune plants and shrubs, consider adding potted plants or a nice doormat, make sure the entire area is clean and re-touch any worn areas.

OUTDOOR AREAS –

Kiwis love spending their summers outside and outdoor living is a big factor that people will consider when looking for a home

THE ROOF –

FLOORING –

New carpet or vinyl can make a big difference to the value of a home, at the very least consider getting a professional carpet cleaner in to make sure your current flooring

is spick and span.

A LICK OF PAINT – Paint can be the easiest way to make a big impact, whether it is merely a touch up or repainting the walls, make sure the job is done well or it will not be worth your time. Neutral colours are always a safe option and appeal to a large range of buyers.

FIXTURES AND FITTINGS –

Bathroom and kitchen taps can be replaced easily and relatively in-expensively and make a large difference to the overall appearance of the space.

FIX ANYTHING BROKEN –

A leaky tap, light fittings that don’t work, broken hinges or guttering. Mostly these are things that take time as opposed to money but knowing that a property has been well maintained is an important aspect that buyers consider.

GARDENING

Celebrating 20th Whangarei Garden Discovery

B

ack in 1996 a group of garden enthusiasts realised it was time to share some of Whangarei’s hidden jewels and so began the Whangarei Garden Discovery.

Fast-forward 20 years and Whangarei Garden Discovery is celebrating the double-decade-milestone by featuring 20 of the district’s finest gardens. Beginning Friday November 18, the three-day event will launch the night before with the recreation of the first Glitterati Garden Party at the Whangarei Quarry Gardens featuring live music, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, prizes for the best dressed and celebrity speaker Lynda Hallinan, who will be selling signed copies of her latest book. (Numbers to this event are limited, so order your tickets now.) From Friday-Sunday, Garden Discovery ticket holders can pick and choose which of the 20 gardens they wish to visit or they can take part in the full trail which begins at Whangarei Quarry Gardens and encompasses Kamo, Kauri, Whangarei Heads and Maungatapere. Sandra Wheeler is showcasing her Kauri garden for the fourth time and remembers the day she was approached to feature her garden: “It started for me one day when our garden was only four years old. Two ladies came up the drive and asked if we’d like to put our garden in the Garden Discovery. I didn’t know what Garden Discovery was but I said yes.” Sandra subsequently joined the committee and, today,

as well as being a key volunteer at the Quarry Gardens, is instrumental in organising the event, which involves seeking out further gardens. This year’s line-up, with both coastal and rural views,

includes ten gardens from the past revisited and ten newbies incorporating sculptures, ponds, waterfalls orchards, rockeries and colour-themed flowers in all their spring glory. Jean Sanders garden ‘Nymet’ in Maunu, which featured in the

GARDENING

Sunny, dry garden areas BY DEBBIE OLDFIELD

C

oming into summer and you probably have at least one area of the garden you still want to plant up. It’s time to plant these areas now to give the plants a good chance of getting established before the next summer drought hits. Don’t forget to add some Potsorb/crystal rain to your planting hole, this holds a lot of water near the plant roots which it releases slowly, next time it rains (or you water) the crystals swell up with water again. Adding compost also helps hold moisture in the soil, especially on sandier soils. And don’t forget to put down a good thick layer of mulch; a 10cm layer is good. It’s amazing how much difference this will make to the moisture level of your soil. If you do need to water over summer then make sure you water deeply. Twice a week well watered is much better than every night watering lightly. This encourages the roots to go down into the soil rather than sitting near the surface.

Welcome

Plants that can handle dry conditions Succulents – the good old standby for dry gardens. They come in all shapes, sizes and colours. From ground covers to tree size. Grasses – Carex testacea - which only gets to about 40cm tall and has a lovely orange and green hue. Also Carex comans (green) and Carex comans bronze. We also have some Renga lilies, NZ Iris, and Dianellas which are all grass like and cope well with dry conditions. Olive trees – These naturally grow in dry, sunny areas. They don’t need a lot of maintenance and can be trimmed up to create a windbreak or hedge or left to grow into an attractive small tree. Astelias – Most of these are found growing in dry areas of NZ….even on cliffs on the coast! They look rather pretty with their silvery foliage. Groundcovers – are another good option for dry sites. They help shade the soil, holding the water in the soil for longer and shading out any weeds that would compete. Coprosma groundcovers are a very good option as they are really quite hardy even in difficult conditions. Some fast growing choices are Coprosma ‘Poor Knights’ and ‘Gold stream’. We’ve had such a warm wet spring that now would be the perfect time to get planting!

I’m Ari, I have recently started at Alter-Natives after finishing a

I am particularly interested in learning more about exotics and edibles. I love gardening and have a large vegetable garden at home. I am looking at part time study options for 2017 and hoping to study organic systems, permaculture and landscape design. I am excited to have the opportunity to extend my plant knowledge while working at Alter-Natives.

BOOKS with

ANNEMARIE FLORIAN Annemarie Florian is an Author, Librarian and Bookseller for Storytime, storytime.net.nz Kanohi : My Face, by Kitty Brown and Kirsten Parkinson, Reo Pepi Tapui, $19.95 One of a superb series of board books that combine simple sentences in Te Reo Maori with accompanying English translations and full-page visual prompts. This one repeatedly asks: Kei hea to with regard to facial features (nose, teeth, mouth, ears etc.). Beautifully and thoughtfully designed, the Maori text takes precedence in bold black letters while the English translation is placed quietly beneath. The whole of the opposite page is given over to the illustration. These hand-drawn artworks are engaging, warm and perceptive, reminiscent of the genius of Gwenda Turner. There’s even a Pronunciation Guide on the end pages, so a brilliant resource for the beginning school, preschool and home; and a wonderful gift for pepi. Poipoia te kakano kia puawai.

From Moa to Dinosaurs : explore & discover ancient New Zealand, by Gillian Candler and Ned Barraud, Potton & Burton $29.95HB, $19.95pap Each year for the last four years, this duo has presented readers with an Explore & Discover title, acquainting us with the here and now of New Zealand’s natural environment – At the Beach; In the Garden; Under the Ocean; In the Bush. This fifth title in the Explore & Discover series takes us back in time to explore ancient forests, lakes and seas, and to discover unique survivors and long-extinct animals that once made this land their home. Impeccably researched and stunningly illustrated, it provides a fascinating glimpse into our remarkable wildlife history, and explains in brief how we’ve managed to piece together such knowledge. Inspiring reading for all natural history enthusiasts 6 to 106.

When We Go Camping, by Sally Sutton and Cat Chapman,Walker Books $27.95 What could be more quintessentially Kiwi than the Christmas camping holiday? Although (rather optimistically) neglecting to mention the rain that almost always makes an appearance, When We Go Camping bounces with the excitement, trials and tribulations of outdoor living. It uses rhyme and onomatopoeia to express the cheerful chaos one can look forward to (or not) on a family camping trip; and is a brilliant read-aloud – like Roadworks, Demolition and Construction, also by Sally Sutton. Certainly the phrase slappetty whacketty swash-io deserves a place in the family vernacular as our usual flyinfested northern summer approaches. The playful illustrations will resonate with 3 to 7 year-olds, especially those about to embark on their own camping holiday.

Remember That November, by Jennifer Beck and Lindy Fisher, Huia Publishers $19.95 If we know our history we can then ask good questions about the world we live in. Today we hear so much about war, so why did the people of Parihaka choose to be peaceful and not to resist in the face of provocation and military might? What’s the difference between violent and non-violent protest? And if this is your choice, what will it cost you? This is a book that leads us to profound questions. –Sir Paul Reeves. Remember That November tells the story – beautifully and simply -- of November 5, 1881, at Parihaka. With a spare text and wonderfully evocative art, this sophisticated picture book is especially useful for stimulating discussion around our heritage at this time of year. Upper primary and intermediate level. Also available in Maori.

BOOKS

Telling our own stories

I’ve recently finished reading a novel -- a particularly biting satire -- that regularly posed these 2 critical questions for its main character: Who are you? and How may you become yourself? It got me thinking. Storytelling – in fact or in fiction – is a way of making sense of the world around us. The stories we tell ourselves about our lives – the lives of individuals, of family, of cultures, of our nation – they hold and bind our identity. They give us a sense of the people we are and who we would like to be. It’s essential then, to tell our own stories, to say what happened, to say why things are important, what things mean for who we are as a nation, for who we’ll become and for what might happen next. Publishing is about making stuff public, and New Zealand publishing is about making New Zealand stuff public. New Zealand publishers present us with landscapes that are both familiar and new. By telling our own stories they inspire us to look again, discover the holiday that’s our own backyard, and make community connections.

Whisker the Kiwi Chick, by Narine Groome and Caroline della Porta, Big Words Books, $24.95 When local author Narine Groome heard about a kiwi hatchling who’d narrowly escaped being crushed by a 13-tonne digger, she was inspired to tell the story. This picture book for 4 to 8 year olds documents in rhyme Whisker’s complete journey, how everyday people were willing to step up – keeping the partially hatched chick warm, securing it safely and delivering it to Rainbow Springs Kiwi Encounter. Whisker thrived after that, graduating to the Whinray Eco Trust Reserve before finally being released back into the wild. Both artwork and text ably demonstrate how community consciousness and expertise can work together, with a fine feel-good result!

ANNUAL, edited by Kate De Goldi and Susan Paris, Gecko Press $39.95. Mine was a generation that grew up with annuals; the one book bestowed on us at Christmas that lasted the whole year through. Yay for this fresh and fine reincarnation. A musical lament, wise and quirky observations on the life of art, or the art of life, games, comic strips, poems, puzzles, dramatic narratives, -- all of this and more is to be found in ANNUAL. My particular favourite would be Damien Wilkins’ compelling contribution, The Glove; it caught at my heart. Yet there’s plenty to smile and knowingly smirk at too. For those who like to be entertained by words, especially wacky words; for those who like to be entranced by ideas, especially offbeat ideas; for those who like to collect facts, especially freaky historical facts. For the intermediate age group and older, ANNUAL is crazy abundant with all manner of tastes and textures.

Our expectations were exceeded REVIEW: PHILIPPA MANNAGH

K

iller Prawn has a new menu! Well, this is a very good excuse to go back to one of the best places in town! Excited at the fact that it couldn’t get much better, my dining partner and I were swiftly seated and before we knew it drinks where on the way. Friendly smiles greeted us at the door and we were looked after intently by professional wait staff the entire length of service. This particular Tuesday night, expectations were exceeded and there was nothing to fault. For the entree, we bravely chose one each knowing that we would be full after our main course. The menu is extensive and interesting to read through, offering varying choices for everyone. We went for the sashimi. Tonights catch was salmon and yellow fin tuna, priced nicely at $19.50. Going by the noises coming from the other side of the table, it was safe to say that this ex-chef appreciated the quality of the dish. My favourite part of the night was the seared scallops with streaky bacon, smashed potato and pea puree at $19 50. One of the best dishes I have had for a while and a generous size for a starter. Feeling brave tonight, I challenged myself to the big-ass beef burger - a massive stack of salad, streaky bacon, beer battered onion ring, cheddar cheese, manuka bbq sauce, harissa aioli and lattice chips for $24 .50. Although I dug deep, I struggled to finish the dish even though the flavours were delicious and this burger was definitely hard to beat. We also ordered the slow cooked duck legs with fondant potato, green vegetables, roasted apples and cranberry sauce, worth every penny at $37.00. With very limited room left to satisfy our sweet tooth, I happened to read BANOFEECAKE. Double layer banana and chocolate chip sponge cake, caramel buttercream and caramelised banana served with vanilla anglaise for $14.00. Surely if we sat here long enough, our mains would settle to savour this new part of the menu too? Soaking up the atmosphere, red wine and the exceptional hospitality it was hard to make a move. We will be back soon, menu change or not.

or one show only, Ron Vincent brings his world class Cat Stevens show to Forum North’s Capitaine Bougainville Theatre in Whangarei New Zealand on Friday November 18th at 8pm. Ron Vincent bears an uncanny resemblance to Cat Stevens and has been a life-long fan. A talented singer, songwriter and musician, Vincent commands the stage and draws you into a wonderful journey through Cat Stevens’ repertoire of beautiful timeless songs.

Ron’s Cat Stevens Show is a trip down memory lane, exploring Stevens’ unsurpassed musical career. His folk influenced, melodic tunes strike a chord with audiences and Ron’s jovial banter and heartfelt expression set the scene for an intimate musical journey. And Ron Vincent sings Cat Stevens is the only act of its kind officially approved by Yusuf/Cat Stevens as the messenger of his music. Inspired by her 2011 trip to the Kermadecs where she was one of nine artists to voyage on the HMNZS Otago to experience the wildlife and islands of the Kermadec region and to contemplate on the way they effect the mind, body and spirit, this is one of her most ambitious installations to date. In Invitation to Openness, viewers are afforded the opportunity to see the entire gallery inhabited by hundreds of bronze cast white moths which will occupy the space as if having arrived at their own accord, claiming it as their natural environment. It was the moths on Raoul Island in particular that led to the creation of this work. Intrigued by their abundance and the way in which the moths occupied the buildings, surrounding anyone who stepped inside them did not give Thomson a feeling of nervousness or

fear but instead she was left with a sense of calm inspiring her to create an immersive environment of her own. Elizabeth spent countless hours creating the first wave of moths, each cast in bronze and flocked in white that were first released onto gallery walls in August 2014. Now numbering 500 this flock of moths invites you to step into the gallery space, be immersed in the installation and to suspend their disbelief. hristmas is the season when you buy this year’s gifts with next year’s money.” ~ Author Unknown Don’t find yourself getting into more debt, when you don’t actually have to. When I wrote this there was 9 weeks and 6 days until Christmas. Love it or not it comes around the same time every year and still we often find ourselves struggling with the cost and not being prepared. 2016’s Hottest Dad Jobs

S

orry, son. Daddy isn’t a cop or a fireman or a paramedic. When I work, I don’t even break a sweat (unless an invoice doesn’t get paid), for I am a writer – wussiest of the wuss jobs. In my day to day work duties I don’t give underlings orders, manhandle people or drive any Tonka vehicles. Being a writer is so unimpressive to little kids it’s barely worth mentioning. What is worth mentioning are the Top 10 Hottest Dad Jobs for 2016, with rationale explained by Abe, age 5.

PROFESSION

RATIONALE By Abe

1. Police Officer

“Cause you chase down baddies and the baddie guy went to jail.”

2. Wobbler

“Wobbers steal money and the police catch them.”

3. ‘Oil maker’ (sic)

“Because oil makes Lego bricks and if you break a Lego brick in half, oil could come out.”

1. Something they want

4. Tractor Maker

“Cause they make tractors, ’cause I like tractors.”

2. Something they need

5. Writer

“Writing stories and words is cool ’cause them get money, not buying money – working to get money.”

6. Truck Driver

“Cause some people call them lorries and that’s a different name but if someone else called it lorries you’d say ‘What?’ Cause in this world we call them Trucks.”

7. Ambliance driver (sic)

“They carry really hurt people, not just a tiny bit of hurt – REALLY hurt people. Like really REALLY hurt. Or cut, if you don’t have plasters on the way.”

8. Daycare teacher

“I wish you did it.”

9. Lego builder

“Abe’s a good Lego builder and he loves Lego sooo much and he can build anything but he likes to make vehicles.”

10. Teacher

“I don’t know [if teaching is a cool job]. And Lego we don’t know about, cause Lego can fit onto Duplo*.” *Not verified

3. Something to wear 4. Something to read This simple rule is helping create restraint in the gift buyer (putting a value on a gift will make it easier to budget.) and hopefully will make the gifts more meaningful. Christmas is not about growing debt.

So, in conclusion, any fathers wishing to secure the love of their children are encouraged to go into a career in law enforcement. Or wobbing people.

I thought I could sleep anywhere

S

taring into each other’s eyes with looks of insanity, we weighed up our next move.

“What are we thinking?” said Dad quietly whilst clipping his helmet underneath his chin and mounting the bike. The bicycles were lined up, sunblock on, water bottles and snacks packed. The tyres had been pumped up on all four bikes and the dog tied up safety at home. House locked, cats fed, sun hats…. the list goes on. We were ready to go! The sibling rivalry hadn’t stopped all morning. After a late night family movie and early bird starts, patience was running thin and I had started to use some of the cliché

statements that my parents used on us as kids. I was prepared to ride fast if I had to, to ditch the older two for a few minutes of sanity. New cycleway, here we come! It felt like the circus was on their way. Having taken over an hour to get out the door, it was now cutting into the toddlers sleep time and the day could go either way. We sped down the hill feeling confident being on our bikes again as a family. With the introduction of a little one in the mix again, we had been missing our weekend rides. “Flying!” little one yelled from the front with her arms out wide. We happily made it into town, only once having to speed ahead to block out the arguing and after a milkshake and lunch at

a local cafe, it was time to head back before nap time. The trip home was fast. We were ready to go and the kids kept up no trouble. The little one waved and “hello’d” half the way home until she was suddenly very quiet. Looking over, she had collapsed into her seat, her little limbs flopping around everywhere. Passing cyclists giggled in disbelief all the way home. After twenty minutes of bumps, driveways, and corners, she was home to awkwardly transfer into bed… where she slept for another two hours. I thought I could sleep anywhere, but today took the cake.
