Treetop adventures in Whangārei forest

From thedepths of a Glenbervie pine forest,among theendless loomingtrees,rings outa squeal of delight. Drawing nearer,fromhighabove amongthe treetops,the still is peppered with distantvoices.

Aseriesofwoodenladdersand ropesrevealtheirascent,though thesourcesthemselvesarebarely visible.

ThisisAdventureForest,Whangārei’s uniqueelevatedactivityandzipliningpark and,outofitsmidststepsownerFrançoise Saparelli.Shegreetsthevisitorsgazing upwardsinenchantmentattheadventure playgroundsheandhusbandFrançoishave createdovertheyears.

Thecoupleopenedtheparkin2007after decidingtosettleinWhangāreifollowingavisit totheareaduringa2004sailingtripfromtheir nativeFrancewheretheconceptofrecreational adventureparkswasdevelopedinthe80s.

Theybeganwithfourcircuits,addingfurther coursesandobstaclesovertheyearstonow include12alluprangingfrom1m-15minheight andofferingvariouslevelsofdifficulty.Thecourses areinterspersedwithobstaclessuchastightropes, nets,‘spiderwebs’,tunnels,swings,bikesandskate boards,ropeandlogbridges–evenareplicaof Whangārei'ssignaturebridge,TeMatauaPohe, alongwithziplinesupto150mlong.

“Wehavedonetheinitialdesignbasedon ourpreviousexperienceofoutdoorrecreation, havingworkedinthatfieldforseveraldecades inFrance,”explainsFrançoise,addingthat refiningthedesignison-goingandthey carryoutmostofthebuildandmaintenance worksthemselves,withtheoccasionalhelpof contractorswhenneeded.

Eachtakesaround20minutestocomplete thoughthisdependsontheabilityandpace theclimber–“It’sdefinitelynotabootcamp!”, saysFrançoise.

“Asopposedtoguidedziplinetoursorto thetraditionalhighropescoursesfoundin youthcamps,thedesignoftheparkallows participantstogobythemselves,attheirown pace,upinthetreestotacklethevariouslevel challengesweoffer.”

Theparkhostsclimbersfromsixyearsold withtheoldest,todate,beingintheir80s“who arequitekeentoshowthey'vekeptintacttheir innermonkey”,saysFrançoise.

Thevastmajorityofvisitorsarelocals visitingforfamilyorfriendoutingson weekendsandschoolholidaysorschoolsfor class-bondingorend-of-yeartrips.Morethan 100schoolsfromtheregionhavevisitedthe parksinceopeningwithmostreturningona regularbasis.

Thoughinternationaltourismwasneveron theradar,bothoverseasvisitorsandthosefrom otherpartsofthecountryarebroughttothe parkbylocalfriendsorrelatives.

“It'sthebestfeedbackwecanaskfor,when someonecomesbackwithnewvisitors,toshow themthe"coolthingwehaveinourbackyard!" saysFrançoise.

Preferringtokeepoutofthespotlight themselves,theparkisnotonsocialmediaand, withminimalmarketing,theyareabletooffer affordableprices.Theparkoperatesmostlyby appointmentwhichavoidsovercrowdingand

SafetyisparamountatAdventureForest andtheparkisregisteredwithWorkSafeas anadventureactivityprovider,undergoing mandatorysafetyauditssinceopeningandit wasthefirstactivityoperatorinNorthlandto meettheauditstandards.

AdventureForestwasthefirst,andis possiblystilltheonly,highwireactivityinNew Zealandtoimplementacontinuousbelay

system.Basedonanoriginalengineeredtether, theirspecial"hook"ensuresapermanent connectiontothelifelines,withouttheneedto clipandunclipcomplexkarabiners.

Aswellasparticipantsafety,treehealthis apriority.Theparkspans2haofforestowned byMatarikiForestsandriggingisadjustedas requiredtoensuretheequipmentdoesn't impedethehealthofthetrees.Overtheyears, theteamhavedevelopedtree-friendlynoninvasivetechniquestofastentheplatforms, wiresandotherelementstothetrees.This isdonewiththeguidanceofanarboristwho monitorsandassessesonaregularbasis.

TheAdventurecircuithasmeanderedus tothefinaleand,hadthisscaredycatknown whatwastocome,perhapsshewouldn’thave undertakenitbutthereisnoturningback Facedwithalengthyziplinetraversingthe lengthoftheAdventureForestwithahugeslide attheendtoexitdown,it’stimeforthegrand exit.Adeepbreaththen,liftingoffandflying throughthejungleisanexhilaratingwaytoend onahigh-andstillintact.

For thirdgeneration owners Alanand Sharon Faber,thereisa lot of satisfaction in running asuccessful business which was started by Alan’sgrandfather, Edgar Oliver Faber when he opened Fabersin Bank St in 1941.Inits heyday Fabers was anational identity withsevenstores around the country.

Now the fourth generation is continuing the tradition, with son David and daughterin-law Hannah joining the business.

Alan says the key to longevity in business is being able to read his customers and supplying affordable, high-quality furniture. Topbrands, including the iconic Stressless, Danske Mobler and La-Z-Boy, areavailable through Fabers.

“Wehave exclusive rights to these top brands meaning Northlanders can buy these right here. They don’thave to travel to Auckland. These exclusive deals date back to the 1960s in terms of relationships, with several generations in those companies as well.

“Theyare all still family owned, as we are,’’Alan said.

Keeping up with furnituretrends often involved regular trips to Europe and the US “when we could travel. It’sabit harder now”.

The Whangarei storehas moved four times over the years, each time to larger premises, beforesettling on the corner of Hannah St and Walton St wherethereisplenty of room for large displays of furniture, window furnishings and accessories.
