ou think you’re having a problematic day and then you meet Sam and her mum Kath. These two brave BFFs have been on a cruel journey involving three generations of breast cancer – nana, mum and Sam, aged 30 – and yet, they are just a delight to be around. Their easy banter is infectious and, strangely, despite hearing their devastating ordeal, I came away with spirits lifted. In fact, if I hadn’t already opened those Mother’s Day chocolates, I would’ve gone straight home and done so. You will see what I mean by that once you’ve read their story. Most of us have been affected by breast cancer in some way and the Savvy team have dedicated this month’s edition to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It would seem its victims are getting younger and younger with our local
Breast Cancer Support Northland Trust (BCSNT) supporting women, such as Sam, as young as 30. Times need to cater for this alarming evolvement and, as our ‘Local Legend’ this month pointed out, New Zealand really needs to follow Australia’s suit and become more vigilant by lowering the free screening to age 40. We also cast some light on the work of the wonderful group of volunteers that make up BCSNT as their annual Pink Loop Walk fundraiser approaches – see inside for the details of this fun event!

riving to her doctor’s appointment, busy working mother of two, Sam Minckley casually reminded husband Dean over the phone that she was getting a lump checked on her breast. “You don’t need to bother doing that, do you?” he asked. “After-all you’re only 30. You’ll be fine.” But given her family history, Sam replied, it was better to be safe than sorry and she carried on her way. Half an hour later, her world turned upside-down. “I was referred straight to the breast clinic,” she recalls. “I was shocked, in disbelief.” Sam had a fair idea what was ahead of her. Her mother and best friend Kath Jaggard had only been declared cancer-free one week earlier after battling breast cancer herself, having been diagnosed six months after burying her own mother for the same reason. “I didn’t tell mum for a couple of weeks. I didn’t want to break her heart,” Sam says, her voice cracking as she glances at her beloved mother. “I didn’t know if it was anything until we got the results back. But I couldn’t carry on with life without telling mum. I finally walked in and said ‘Mum, we need to talk’.” “It’s the worst thing a parent could have to go through,” says Kath, wiping her eyes. Kath and Sam, both from Whangarei, have a long family history of cancer. When Kath’s mother was diagnosed, the lump in her breast was already 80mm. It was a regular mammogram in 2015 which picked up on the 20mm lump in Kath’s breast, which turned out to be a Grade Two, triple positive hormone-type cancer. But like her mother too, she didn’t tell her daughter at first.
she was diagnosed. “We’d both watched nana go through it.” “It was pretty horrible,” confirms Sam. “I wasn’t worried though. You were gonna come through,” she smiles. Kath’s 18 months of treatment involved four rounds of chemotherapy, 15 rounds of radiotherapy, herceptin and a partial mastectomy. “So, I only have half a boob,” says Kath, 57. “But they got it all and it’s not in my lymph nodes so I was cancer-free.” Sam’s diagnosis, however, was much worse. One week after her mum’s discharge from oncology in 2016, she noticed a lump during a self-check. But, to everyone’s surprise, including the surgeon, the mammogram, ultra sound scan and biopsy, during which nine samples were taken in one sitting, results all came back benign. “Oh it was great news,” Sam recalls. “I had a party.” In fact, the family planned a holiday to celebrate being cancer-free. But the relief was short-lived. “My surgeon, Maxine Ronald, wasn’t convinced the tumours were benign and had called me back for a lumpectomy. I guess it was in the back of my head that there was still a possibility but I wasn’t dwelling on that. As far as I was concerned, I was cancerfree and had been for a month and then the day we flew out for a week’s family holiday in Australia, I got the news from the surgeon. “It was horrible and I was dreading coming
“I knew something was going on,” recalls Sam, now 32. “But she didn’t tell me so we went on our cruise.” “I wasn’t going to ruin your holiday,” laughs Kath through her tears. “It was heartwrenching,” she describes of the moment

Pink Loop Walk
BY JODI BRYANT
Guys and gals, children and dogs – it’s almost time to dig out your pink attire and limber up for the annual Pink Loop Walk.
A
fter raising over $20,000 from the previous two events since its inception by the Breast Cancer Support Northland Trust (BCSNT), the annual fundraiser is steadily gaining traction. BCSNT committee member Melanie Waldron says the idea three years ago was to raise both funds for and awareness of the charity. “We wanted to raise awareness in the hope that, when a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer, she knows to come to us for support. We are a local, independent charity and all our funds come through the community in the way of donations or fundraising and 100 per cent of the money stays in our community supporting our local women.” The October 21 event encompasses Whangarei’s popular and scenic Hatea Loop Walkway, beginning and ending at the Canopy Bridge, where a warm-up will take place around 9am with the owner of Curves gym. At 9.30am, the Northland Nightmares Roller Derby league will lead the way and, along the loop, will be lots of music and entertainment with food and refreshments available to purchase. Following the walk, a prize giving will be held, along with an auction run by Eves Real Estate alongside further entertainment, food and beverages. “This is a fun, family event for anyone and everyone! Prams, bikes, skates, mobility scooters are all welcome. There are lots of best-dressed prizes – even for best wheels and best-dressed dog!” says Melanie, adding that each year sees a good turn-out of men who seem to excel at dressing up. Items to be auctioned have been donated from local businesses and will be showcased on the Pink Loop Fundraiser Facebook page prior to the event. “We are still looking for more donated items, if any businesses would like to support us, and we would like to say a big thank you to our major sponsors as, without them, this is not possible.”
In 1980, Betty Morgan formed a Breast Cancer support group in Whangarei, which then became a charitable trust in 2007.
She says the first year ‘blew us away’ with over 400 participants and the committee are now hoping to double that. “This year we have made a few changes. As well as starting and ending at the Canopy Bridge, as opposed Te Matau a Pohe Bridge like the previous years, we have also teamed up with TRG imaging with a focus on screening for breast cancer with regular mammograms and early detection.” The proceeds from previous events have gone towards ‘Helping Hands’, which offers meals and financial contributions, to, so far, over 50 Northland recipients. This year, the money raised will be used to expand this initiative and fund an Annual Retreat for women who have been through breast cancer. The retreat offers a weekend of relaxation, pampering, support and companionship. To register for the Pink Loop Walk, go to www.breastcancernorthland.co.nz or register on the day. While registering online, participants have the option of selecting a local school to be in
to win a $1,000 prize package. The winning school will be chosen based on the number of entries per school roll ratio. The prize package includes $500 for the school to use for printing needs from JOP and $500 worth of groceries from Pak’nSave Whangarei. Other sponsors include Eves Real Estate Whangarei, Kia and Isuzu Northland. For further information, contact: pinkloop@ breastcancernorthland.co.nz
Breast Cancer Support Northland is now a local independent charitable trust made up of breast cancer survivors offering practical and emotional support to people diagnosed with breast cancer living in the Northland region. It provides specially-trained visitors who have recovered from breast cancer themselves and an opportunity to speak with others who have been in a similar position, as well as information on activities and services available. The trust aims to provide every person in Northland diagnosed with breast cancer with the support they need. When women are first diagnosed with breast cancer, a specially-trained volunteer visitor will contact and support them through their journey. The group also run fortnightly coffee groups, subsidise pilate classes which helps with the effects of treatment, run a Facebook page with up-to-date happenings, as well as a private Facebook forum specifically for those who have or have had a breast cancer diagnosis, to chat and support each other. Breast Cancer Support Northland volunteer visitors are happy to talk over the phone, meet for coffee or attend appointments.
Breast Cancer Support Northland annual events include a mid-winter lunch, Rising Hearts Annual Retreat and the Pink Loop Walk.

Vikki’s passion for hair products and the latest innovations in producing better, safer, more conditioning treatments for hair was the motivation for opening the Xtreme Shampoo Shoppe. ‘‘We choose our products really carefully
from companies that have high standards,’’ she says. ‘‘We have to, because our clients are very discerning about using products that are sulphate and paraben-free. They’re much more savvy and they expect to get the best recommendations.’’ She says her biggest buzz comes from clients who tell her: “that product you sold me was so good!’’ Vikki believes there is no point paying hundreds of dollars to colour and style your hair, then forgetting to maintain the beautiful results. Over 30 top professional brands are available here in Whangarei under one roof, saving the trip to Auckland. They include popular choices like Joico, Marroccan Oil, GHDs, Paul Mitchell, Fudge, Wella, Matrix, PPS, TiGi , Bedhead, DeLorenzo, Biolage, Meducuiticals, Nioxin, Cloud Nine, Juuce,

Three steps to put a spring in your sales Three Steps To Put A Spring In Your Sales BY NATALIE TOLHOPF Not all marketing ideas need to be difficult or expensive. It’s more important to get your message out there consistently than it is to be fancy. Taking action moves your business forward – but can be harder after a wet and wild winter! In this growing digital age most of business is done online. Think email, sales funnels, Google adwords and Facebook advertising. This doesn’t help with the hibernation in winter. So I have created this month’s column to get you out of the house, get your best clothes on and get out in person! Recent studies remind us that prospective customers need 7-12 touch points. That is a lot if you are in business by yourself. But meeting people in person and connecting can speed this process up.
The following strategy is very simple, yet powerful. This does come with a warning though. You will need to go out of your comfort zone to execute some of these. Being in business is one of the biggest personal development journeys we could ever go on. 1. Contact three people everyday. That could be a phone call, a Facebook message to referrals, follow-ups, or to new database customers. In a world that is online, the personal touch still goes along way. 2. Schedule in two networking events
a month. That way you are mingling, inspiring, listening and networking yourself amongst your local and greater circles. 3. Book in one speaking engagement a month: This can either be to a small group, a large group online or offline. A webinar, on stage, in a workshop. The

ights are getting lighter, more people are out and about, BBQs are getting dusted off… Summer is on its way! Which means a lot of us are focused on making some changes to our lives as we transition into the festive season. However, change can be difficult. We start feeling really inspired, we commit to new habits for a week or two, and then something shifts - we lose momentum, we come up against challenges, and all of a sudden our everyday comforts start to override that initial inspiration. As a result, we give up and we are left feeling frustrated. We tell ourselves: ‘It wasn’t meant to be… I’m not good enough… I’m not cut out for it… or maybe I’m just not ready.’ Now, before we fall into a cycle of self-sabotage, let’s stop and address one of the key reasons people fail to change, and what we can do about it!
When making a change, people tend to shoot from the hip. At some stage in life we have all made a change – some have been successful and some have failed. Either way, there are valuable lessons that sit within these moments. However, what I tend to find is that people start making changes without reflecting on the lessons learnt from their previous experiences, and they end up falling into similar behaviours, habits, or thinking traps that let them down time and time again. So, I invite you to stop and reflect on your experience with change. Create a plan of attack that suits your specific needs and challenges – because you will be challenged, so why not identify how you are

Chemical eye burns
Chemical exposure to any part of the eye or eyelid may result in a chemical eye burn. Burns can occur when the eye comes into contact with a solid, liquid, or vaporous chemical. Chemical burns represent a small percentage of eye injuries.
A
lthough many burns result in only minor discomfort, every chemical exposure or burn should be taken seriously. Permanent damage is possible and can be blinding and lifealtering. The severity of a burn depends on what substance caused it, how long the substance had contact with the eye, and how the injury is treated. Damage is usually limited to the front segment of the eye. Burns that penetrate deeper than the cornea, are the most severe, often causing cataracts and glaucoma. Alkali burns are the most dangerous. Alkalischemicals that have a high pH-penetrate the surface of the eye and can cause severe injury to both the external structures like the cornea and the internal structures like the lens. In general, more damage occurs with higher pH chemicals. Common alkali substances contain the hydroxides of ammonia, lye, potassium hydroxide, magnesium, and lime. Substances you may have at home that contain these chemicals include fertilizers, cleaning products (ammonia), drain cleaners (lye), oven cleaners, and plaster or cement (lime).
damage to the cornea and this also may result in blindness. Common acids causing eye burns include sulfuric acid, sulfurous acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, acetic acid, chromic acid, and hydrofluoric acid. Substances you have at home that may contain these chemicals include glass polish (hydrofluoric acid), and vinegar. An automobile battery can explode and cause a sulfuric acid burn. This is one of the most common acidic burns of the eye.
Irritants are substances that have a neutral pH and tend to cause more discomfort to the eye than actual damage. Most household detergents fall into this category. Pepper spray is also an irritant. It can cause significant pain but usually does not affect vision and rarely causes any damage to the eye.
Treatment for Chemical Eye Burns? Begin washing your eye before taking any
Symptoms of a Chemical Eye Burn? A true loss of vision signifies a very serious burn. An increase of the pressure inside the eye can occur but may be delayed by hours to days. Early signs and symptoms of a chemical eye burn are: • Pain • Redness • Irritation • Tearing • Inability to keep the eye open • Sensation of something in the eye • Swelling of the eyelids • Blurred vision

other action and continue for at least 15 minutes. The longer a chemical is in your eye, the more damage will occur. Diluting the substance and washing away any particles that may have been in the chemical are extremely important. Ideally, in a work setting, you would be placed in an emergency eyewash or shower
available, use cold tap water. If you are at home and do not have special eye wash, step into the shower with your clothes on to wash out your eye. Open your eye as wide as possible, using your fingers to spread the lids, and roll your eyeball as much as possible to clean all surfaces. Don’t use an eye cup or bandage the eye. Use sunglasses to aid in eye discomfort. Next time we will discuss when to seek medical assistance and further treatments for chemical eye burns.
Acid burns result from chemicals with a low pH and are usually less severe than alkali burns because they do not penetrate into the eye as readily as alkaline substances. The exception is a hydrofluoric acid burn, which is as dangerous as an alkali burn. Acids usually damage only the very front of the eye; however, they can cause serious

Revamp your spring fitness routine With warmer weather on the way, it’s time to ditch what doesn’t work and revamp your workout!
he days are getting longer, and we can begin to switch out our woolly jumpers for lighter clothing. This can be daunting if you’re not really feeling in shape and on top of your fitness game. For most women, they wish to add shape and firmness to their body and get rid of the jiggly bits. To do this takes two things (you can’t just try to lose weight). What you want is body recomposition which means you need to reduce body fat and build and tone muscle tissue. If you’re looking for a bit of motivation to help you get back on track towards your fitness goals, I’ve got some tips for you. Focus on building health first and foremost - The mindset that many women have when it comes to getting a feel-good body they love is to reduce calories and often those calories don’t come from the best sources. Then do as much exercise as possible to burn more calories. When we try this approach and the weight doesn’t budge, we say… “Ah, I just need to sneak another hour in each week.” or “I just need to cut back on the calories even more.” or this is the worst, “I’m obviously not trying hard enough.” So, we try to beat our metabolism into submission where we believe that the more dieting and cardio we do, we will end up with that body we want. A much more successful approach is to: 1. Train with resistance (weight) to get stronger each week and month. For most women to get the body they want they will need more toned muscle than they think. Just exercising to burn calories doesn’t do this and it can lead to muscle tissue loss and a body that is ‘skinny fat’. To get great results, at least three quarters of your training should be spent doing resistance (strengthening) type exercise. If there is time and energy left over that is when you can add some extra cardio or recreational activity that makes for an active lifestyle.
Also, spend less time doing fluff exercises that produce very little results. For example, things that work only one muscle group at a time with lots of light repetitions. The majority of your exercise program should be made up of multi joint compound exercises that work big muscle groups to produce the best results. Things like squats, deadlifts, presses, rows, pull-ups along with some single leg work like split squats or weighted step ups. 2. Nourishing your body in an optimum way by focusing on the nutrients in and quality of the food rather than calories. A simple concept is - just eat real food! This means avoiding as much processed and packaged stuff as possible. The good news is there’s no need to calorie count when you eat this way, just focus on making sure each of your meals consist of quality protein, veggies, healthy carbs and healthy fats. Make Small Changes Too often people think they need to completely overhaul their lifestyle to see results. Not so, small changes can lead to big results because they are more sustainable in the long run. Take a look at where you can make any improvements in your routine. Can you get to the gym early in the morning 1-2 times a week? Can you do an hour of meal prep on a Sunday to give you a head start for the week ahead? Can you cut your portions down by 20 per cent? Making these small and simple changes will add up and you will be on your way to being summer-ready in no time.
I’m not trying to look perfect… I just want to feel better, look great, know I’m healthy and able to rock any outfit I choose.

ANOTHER FIRST
A highlight of the InnoNative fashion premiere is a collection by young Northland designer Minnie-May Niha. Her brand ‘Minnie Mayd’ was first seen at the InnoNative Market’s maiden event in 2017. The InnoNative Market was the first time this fashion student had presented let alone sold her work publicly. “The whole thing was quite successful....I was quite chuffed.” The Minnie Mayd aesthetic is all about creating beautiful, upcycled, fashion pieces. The aesthetic extends to the racks, signage and packaging. Minnie-May has created and sold over 250 garments, all from salvaged materials. Each of her garments is an unique one-off piece, in contrast to the ‘fast fashion’ brands we see everywhere. The October 24th fashion showcase is called, “MOKO – making our mark on the world” and will require Minnie-May to bring all her skills to bear in illustration, pattern design and sewing to present an overall collection based on “belonging”. Her pieces are displayed on a rack made from mānuka sticks, with a sign made from a tossed-out piece of particleboard, Minnie-May won’t be compromising on her kaupapa of repurposing discarded materials any time soon. “When I was little I would grab my dad’s old tops and cut them up, that’s when I was like 10… now I’ve almost got my degree behind my back, I can put my practice to work". When Minnie-May isn’t completing her Bachelor of Design at AUT, she can frequently be found down Hihiaua Precinct, at the InnoNative Business Base, a space established to support indigenous entrepreneurship.

New Zealand is falling behind other countries in introducing new drugs and better treatments to the public health system. However, with donors’ support, Breast Cancer Foundation NZ continues to offer hope and help where it is needed most.

BCFNZ’s vision is Zero Deaths from Breast Cancer. Its mission: pushing new frontiers in early detection, treatment and support. Education about the importance of early detection is key to saving lives today. With a focus on reaching as many Kiwis as possible, from people in big cities to those in remote communities, BCFNZ continuously promotes breast awareness and screening. BCFNZ works with New Zealand’s smartest scientists and medical minds in a constant quest for urgently-needed breakthroughs. It has a long history of funding innovative research at key institutions in an effort to improve treatment and find cures. For example, it has teamed up with the Ferrier Research Institute in Wellington to find a therapeutic vaccine for breast cancer. BCFNZ developed mybc, an online app that connects breast cancer patients, letting them share advice and encouragement. It runs free bi-monthly informative webinars where patients can listen to and ask questions of doctors

Early Detection = Better Outcome Early detection is your best insurance for a cure against breast cancer. Many women wait until they find a lump or notice a change in their breasts before booking a mammogram. This significantly reduces the chance of a positive outcome. TRG Imaging recommend ANNUAL mammogram screening for all women from 40 years of age. Book your mammogram today. Whangarei 09 437 0540 / Kerikeri 09 407 6222 • www.trgimaging.co.nz 24 | SAVVY

hen Carol Roland began accompanying her friend to Breast Cancer Support Northland meets, she had no idea she would soon need the services herself. But, at age 45, the Whangarei nurse discovered a lump and her own breast cancer journey began. “I never would’ve thought to have a mammogram done,” says the now 62-year-old. “I just found the lump one day. I never thought I would get it. It was definitely a big shock to me. I was only 45 with a young family, I had a healthy diet, ran half-marathons – I still had my life ahead of me.” However, she describes her own journey as relatively easy compared to what some endure, due to lots of support from her husband Bill, friends, family and the Breast Cancer Support Northland Trust (BCSNT). It was early stage breast cancer and, after radiotherapy and surgery, followed by several years of close monitoring, she was declared cancer-free. “I consider myself quite lucky. The Phantom of the Opera Whangarei Theatre Company are proud to announce they will be producing this famous musical by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber at Forum North in June 2019. The story follows the Phantom, who hides in a shadowy existence far beneath the majesty and splendour of the Paris Opera House. He feels shamed by his physical appearance and is feared by all. He is the ‘Angel of Music’, and the love he holds for his beautiful protégée Christine Daaé is so strong that even her heart cannot resist. The show contains many well-known and highly memorable songs and will be a delight for all ages. This is likely to be a once-in-lifetime opportunity for Northlanders
to perform in The Phantom, or to see it produced locally. Whangarei Theatre Company (WTC) president Barbara Trimmer says she is delighted that the company has decided to undertake producing another huge show in Forum North. She acknowledges the dedication of the team at WTC in driving the production of musicals for all Northlanders to enjoy, given that it is a huge undertaking with no guarantee of success. However, the WTC track record in Forum North (with
shows such as Jekyll & Hyde, sho Cats Cat and Miss Saigon) makes her confident that they can again deliver a wonderful show for all the people of Northland to enjoy. To sta start the process, the company w will be holding auditions from Nove November 2-4 at the Riverbank Centre, Reyburn House Lane. They are by appointment, and those who wish to participate are asked to phone the produ production manager, Barbara 393 322 to book their time. Trimmer, on 021 39 Call-backs will be on November 10 and 11. For those unable to attend the audition weekend, the production manager will try to arrange an alternative date/time. The initial auditions will last approximately 15 minutes with the director, musical director and vocal coach. People will be asked to sing a song from the show, specifically of the character if auditioning for a particular role, listed on http:// www.whangareitheatrecompany.org.nz/ thephantomoftheopera.html and will also be asked to demonstrate their vocal range.
In addition to the lead roles, the show requires a Corps de Ballet, both male and female, not all of whom will need to sing. WTC hope that ballet dancers from throughout Northland will audition to ensure the show has a suitably high standard at all levels. Students at local ballet schools will be very welcome to audition. The show is to be directed by Grant Smith, who has a wellestablished record as a director for WTC. His previous credits as director or choreographer for WTC include Nunsense, Chicago, Cabaret, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and Jesus Christ Superstar. Music director Ray Palmer is always pleased to hear from anyone who would like to play in the orchestra, and WTC always welcomes people who want to help off-stage. The show will have a new set and costumes, which will reflect the stunning designs of the previous professional productions. Please contact the production manager if you would like to help in any way.
Meeting rapper results in art Kits for Kids BY JODI BRYANT A Whangarei art teacher is hoping to use her ‘unforgettable’ birthday experience of meeting the rapper Savage to benefit kids in Whangarei Hospital. In August, Julia Tapp was gifted a ticket to the Savage concert from her husband Jason. However, at the last minute, she had an idea and, in just two hours, the talented artist and owner of Northland Arts Centre ‘busted out two of the fastest portraits I have ever done’. “I came up with the idea of the Kits for Kids just before the concert and it was like a penny-drop moment and I knew in my heart it was right,” Julia explains. “I have always done celebrity portraits and auctioned them for charity. The last one was for St John after our son passed away. This is the first time we are doing it for the hospital.” Julia took the portraits along to the concert and showed the staff at the event in the hope Savage would autograph one. She describes the concert as ‘an amazing night filled with middle-aged dancing and fist-pumping’ when, one of the organisers approached her

New Anne Frank exhibition to come to Whangarei Museum at Kiwi North, Whangarei International travelling exhibition - ‘Anne Frank - Let Me Be Myself’ - is coming to Te Tai Tokerau this summer. After being viewed by over 10 million people internationally and travelling around Australasia, ‘Anne Frank - Let Me Be Myself’ will be showcased at Whangarei Museum, Kiwi North October 1, 2018 until February 3, 2019. Having exhibited the original ‘Anne Frank - A History for Today’ in 2010, Kiwi North is honoured to have been asked to host the revised exhibition ‘Anne Frank - Let Me Be Myself’ this year. The exhibition arrived in New Zealand in 2018 and opened at the Auckland War Memorial Museum in January where it engaged over 35,000 visitors in just three short months. People throughout Northland who missed the opportunity to view the exhibition in Auckland now have the chance to experience Anne’s story here in Whangarei.
Developed by the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, this revised exhibition explores what life was like for Anne Frank and her family during the progress of World War Two and the Holocaust. By focusing on the personal experiences of a single family through film, historical artefacts, photographs, and Anne’s own words, this exhibition outlines the stark consequences of prejudice and racism. The conclusions, however, focus on learning from the past with a significant focus on resilience and identity. Through a series of panels and documentary sharing the modern stories of six young people, visitors will be able to explore how they define identity and what they might do in similar circumstances. The most significant and unique component of ‘Anne Frank - Let Me Be Myself’ is the involvement of youth peer guides from our schools. Students from
Te Tai Tokerau have had the opportunity to attend training by Educator Chris Harris (from the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand) before the exhibition opening. Peer guiding allows greater interaction with the exhibition content by guides and visitors and allows the themes to be voiced by those who are at a vital time of experiencing them. By bridging the material through youth voices, the experience encourages greater discussion and revelation of the issues of identity, prejudice and discrimination. Nearly seventy years since the Holocaust, these themes remain contemporary challenges in New Zealand, from discrimination over gender, ability, and ethnicity to politics over immigration and asylum seekers. While Anne Frank’s diary is renowned as a personal and heartfelt insight into the very real experience of a young person of the horror of WWII, her diary itself is not a phenomenon. Like today, diaries are a regular part of human methods of recording and processing our experiences. Alongside the exhibition, the story of Egon
Schoenberger will be displayed through diary extracts and photographs, with thanks to the Auckland War Memorial Museum and the Schoenberger family. Here is another story of life throughout the Holocaust, although Egon’s lead him to settle in New Zealand. With the very relevant focus on youth issues, we are delighted to bring such a significant exhibition to both the communities of the Te Tai Tokerau region and to our visitors from all over the world. The exhibition will be at Whangarei Museum, Kiwi North from the October 1, 2018 to February 3, 2019, and is included in general admission. Panang Prawn
INGREDIENTS • 6 x Prawns (large) • Kaffir Lime Leaf (2) • Palm Sugar (30g) • 1 tablespoon of Fish Sauce • 250ml Coconut Milk + 2 tablesppons Panang Curry Paste (15-20g) - we prefer ‘Mae Ploy’for this particular dish as it is a crustacean-based curry paste from Thailand OPTIONAL (normally vegetables aren’t in traditional Panang Goong but we like our veges so we put it in ours): • Broccoli Florets (20g) • Cauliflower Florets (20g) • Carrot (20g) - sliced into sticks • Green Beans (20g) Serve with Thai Rice (Jasmine)
METHOD: • Add one cup of Thai rice into a bowl then cover with cold water. Using your hand, wash the rice until the water goes milky. Do this a further couple of times until the water is mostly clear. Now that your rice has been washed, place into a rice cooker along with fresh water and cook. • Slice the Kaffir lime leaves into thin strips. • In a small pot, add water and bring to the boil then blanch the beans, broccoli, cauliflower and carrots. • In a hot pan (or wok if you have one) add 1/4 of a cup of coconut milk and bring to the boil. Stir in the Panang curry paste, continually stirring until you get a nice fragrance coming from the pan (approx 1 minute). • Add the fish sauce, palm sugar and 1 Kiffir lime leaf (you can also add chopped-up fresh chillies here if you prefer a bit more spice). • Add another 1/4 of a cup of coconut milk and bring to the boil. • Add Prawns and cook for a further few minutes.

TOOTH AND NAIL
Tooth and Nail Exhibition makes an impact
A show of big gritty prints and ceramics at Whangarei Art Museum is shaking up our perception of these under-rated art forms.
Image Credit: Hamish O-B, Tooth and Nail, 2018, woodcut
31 AUGUST - 11 NOVEMBER OPENING FRIDAY 31 AUGUST AT 5PM
Featuring: Hamish O-B, Hayley Clark, Martinus Sarangapany, Richard Darbyshire, Rosie Parsonson, Jasmine Horton THE HUB, TOWN BASIN | WHANGAREI ART MUSEUM TE MANAWA TOI
The show is called Tooth and Nail and one of the initiators and artists is Hamish Oakley Browne. He said: “These super-large works growl at you with a lot of energy. Six of us were ready to rally and step up our game to get this show of 23 works together.” Tooth and Nail is showing in the Community Gallery at the Art Museum, which is a gallery intended for people who haven’t exhibited at museum level before. Hamish said: “Five of the six of us are NorthTec applied arts degree graduates, and our common thread is printmaking and/or ceramics. These media are both the poor sons of the art world so the Tooth and Nail title suggests we’re fighting for a better recognition of them.” The six artists are Hamish OakleyBrowne (printmaking, woodcuts), Martinus Sarangapany (print-making, woodcuts, drawing, sculpture), Hayley Clark (fashion, painting, printmaking, youth theatre), Richard Darbyshire (sculpture and ceramics), Rosie Parsonson (drawing, painting, glazing ceramics), Jasmine Horton (printmaker and manager at Te Kowhai Print Trust).
Hamish said: “Most of the works for the show have a collaborative creative input so we learnt about the unusual tension and uneasy peace in negotiating through to novel solutions.” Hamish is well-used to working collaboratively and in the community. “I love community projects, especially in environments where people don’t usually have access to art. “I worked with fellow artist Melinda Butt on an alternative education project called He kakano a hau. We used photography to connect these kids, who had been excluded from mainstream schools, to their community. We gave them a camera and they went out and asked to take people’s photos and interview them, so photography gave them a positive way to re-enter their community. “Their photos were framed and exhibited at The Shutter Room, and during the project, they met with our mayor, Sheryl Mai, in her offices so they got a totally new experience of themselves out in community.” Tooth and Nail runs until November 11.

DESIGN TRICKS THAT ADD DOLLARS None of us like to think that our interiors look, well, cheap… Like we’ve only shopped at the local budget home décor outlet. Here’s how to make your place look expensive, without spending much money. Timeless over trends Pick timeless over trends for your mainstay pieces and surfaces. Trying to stay up with the fashions might lead to ill-considered and rushed choices. Once you have decided on more timeless styles and colours for the major items, you can then have fun adding fashion pieces. Choose a classic sofa, but refresh your cushions. Use a classic neutral paint colour for most of your walls but know that it’s relatively cheap and easy to repaint a bedroom, a hallway or a feature wall. Opt for handmade Choose something handmade. Artisan, organic-looking and handmade objects are gaining in popularity as we spurn the idea of mass-produced pieces that everyone else will have.
Weathered hues, such as Resene Quarter Duck Egg Blue, bring timeless beauty. Project by Michael Mansvelt. Photo by Pip Guthrie.

GRILL, THEN CHILL
with Escea’s new Outdoor Fireplace Kitchen
The EK Outdoor Fireplace Kitchen is Escea’s meatiest wood fire yet.
C
ombining an outdoor flame-grilling kitchen with an impressive outdoor fireplace, the EK provides the goods for the ultimate outdoor dining experience. “The beauty of this fire is its versatility,” says Escea’s lead designer Alex Hodge. “In the one appliance, you can create a delicious flame-grilled meal, then as the night wears on, watch it transform into a dramatic outdoor fireplace. This fusion is changing the shape of home design and making us rethink the traditional outdoor living layout.” Influenced by Argentinian BBQ cooking techniques, Escea’s engineers enlisted experienced chefs to help guide the cooking mode design. Coming equipped with everything you need to achieve a smoky meat lovers feast, including an Ember Generator, 13-point adjustable cooking plates, grills and meat hooks, the EK delivers
an authentic cooking experience that appeals to both the home BBQ-cook to the most creative of culinary chefs. Best of all, once the flame cooking is done, it all hides underneath the stainless steel draw, giving you a roaring fire sure to get the party started. Available in three sizes, the EK950, EK1250 and EK1550, the Outdoor Fireplace Kitchen embraces Escea’s signature sleek style and is designed to blend seamlessly into any outdoor space. The EK also features exciting new technology that allows the fire to be attached to the home. Hodge explains “At Escea, we’re constantly pushing the boundaries when it comes to innovation and technology. With the EK, this means that we’ve been able to create greater indoor-outdoor flow and give the homeowner uninterrupted views looking out.”
Constructed from eight gauge stainlesssteel, the EK Series can withstand whatever you throw at it, making it built to last. And like all Escea fires, the EK Series is proudly designed and manufactured in Dunedin, New Zealand – the best place to test the limits of heat against the elements.

TEXTILE FIBRES & THEIR CHARACTERISTICS - AN EDUCATIONAL YARN IN THREE PARTS We are passionate about fabrics and finding the right solutions for our customers. With fantastic support from our fabric suppliers, such as James Dunlop, we have a wealth of knowledge to share, like the different characteristics of textile fibres.
A study of PART natural fibres from TWO Animal origin Silk An animal fibre that comes from the Silkworm. The silkworm creates its cocoon from very long silk fibres which are harvested from mulberry trees. • It is naturally fine in texture and colours beautifully. • Silk is a relatively strong fibre and can withstand a certain amount of abrasion, particularly when used in conjunction with a backing fabric. • Unrivalled in splendour and smoothness, silk is regarded as the most exclusive of all natural fibres. • An absorbent fibre, it has the potential to move in humid environments. • Its biggest disadvantage in furnishings is its sensitivity to UV light degradation (direct and reflected) Due to its sensitivity, it should not be used in direct sunlight or even bright light.
Wool A natural animal fibre made from sheep fleece. • Has become very popular in interiors with resurgence in the demand for quality natural products. • When used in tightly woven constructions, wool can be very durable. • Wool enjoys the natural benefits of being inherently flame-retardant, dirt-repellent, anti-static and temperatureregulating. • Pure wool compositions are not considered to be suitable for curtains unless protected from direct sunlight due to its sensitivity to UV light degradation, which can make wool brittle and weak. Blending wool with synthetic fibres can reduce this sensitivity. • The crimp and fine molecular structure of this fibre ensures woollen textiles are elastic, allowing the yarn to stretch when pulled and helping it return to its original form. • Wool can be affected by cloth moth larvae as well as bacteria and mildew, which can deteriorate and weaken the fibre over time.

WHAT’S MY HOUSE REALLY WORTH?
W
hen you’ve lived in a property for a while it can be hard to be rational about its worth. How can you put a price on the spot where you’ve built so many memories with family and friends? Someone will surely recognise the hours you spent sanding back the windows or digging out the agapanthus in the garden and reward you with a high price, won’t they? Unfortunately potential buyers may see things differently, especially in a slow housing market. There are several methods you can use to gauge the worth of your property. Remember that the rateable value or RV (formerly known as the government valuation, or GV) of your property doesn’t really provide any clues. These valuations are done by the local council to work out what share of rates a household should pay. They are only done every three years and don’t take any improvements into account – increasingly, properties that include an RV figure in the advertising will come with a disclaimer that it is not indicative of current market value. These days you can gather a lot of
information for free thanks to websites like Trade Me and Homes.co.nz. Trade Me’s Property Insights has information on more than 1.5 million homes, including rateable value data, previous sale prices, when the property was built and what size it is. The site also provides an estimated value range, based on a melting pot of data from sales of comparable properties, listing details and user activity. Homes.co.nz operates similarly. Its estimate service is built on a complex set of valuation models, using around 30 million pieces of data bought from councils nationwide, plus sales values and a wide set of property features. Both sites recognise there are a number of factors at play, so they offer an estimated value range that can be quite broad. While both these sites are useful, they don’t show the full picture and should only be used as the starting point in determining value. They can’t take the condition of your property into account and they may not recognise any improvements you might have made (though homes.co.nz does allow owners to ‘claim’ their property and edit information about it).
BUYING
Let’s say you own a large property in an area where there have been some bigticket sales in the last year. Your property might have some serious structural issues and be in generally poor condition, yet the algorithms may claim that it is worth a lot more than any sensible buyer would pay for it because other houses in the neighbourhood have sold for high prices. The impact of this is two-fold. Firstly, the seller could anticipate a big pay-day that may never arrive; and secondly, some buyers may be put off making an offer because they think it’s out of range. There are a couple of ways to combat this. When you start working with a real estate agent to sell your property they must supply you with a current market appraisal or CMA. This is based on similar information to the online versions, but it also comes with the agent’s realtime, real-life knowledge of the area, what similar properties have sold for and the condition and particular characteristics of your own property (such as whether it has been repainted recently or it’s in a state of disrepair). The agent will
SELLING
have had the chance to walk through your property and identify its unique selling propositions, such as good sun, proximity to desirable schools and other features that buyers like. It’s important to note that you may get varying CMA ranges from different real estate agents as they may each take a divergent perspective on your property that you will then need to consider. Your other option is to pay a registered valuer to provide you with an independent valuation. This service comes at a cost (the price will vary, depending on the level of detail), but it will be more accurate. The Property Institute, which represents valuers, says a registered valuation can help sellers be a little more clinical about their property’s worth. Even with all the information you can gather, the true indication of your property’s value is what a willing buyer will pay for it at the given time that it’s on the market. A valuation, a price range or a figure reached by an algorithm is not cash in the bank. For independent advice on buying or selling property, check out reaa.govt.nz.

80 percent of Kiwis
struggle with back pain ARE YOU ONE OF THEM?
A
re you struggling with back pain? You’re not alone. More than 80 per cent of adults experience back pain at some point in their lifetime. Poor posture combined with sedentary lifestyles are the most common problems causing New Zealander’s back pain. This is a growing concern as increased technology use, especially hand-held devices, is having a greater impact on people’s posture and spinal health across all ages, with users slumping in locked positions causing strain on the back and neck. NZCA Chiropractor Dr Cassandra Fairest says: “In a recent survey, more than a quarter of adults reported experiencing lower back pain in the previous three months. It is the most common cause of jobrelated disability and a leading contributor to missed work days.” There are many things that can contribute to back pain, from stress to sports injuries. It’s important to keep your back healthy and supported which is why Dr Fairest says a comfortable night’s sleep is a key to spinal health.
“Investing in the right pillow and mattress is important to give the optimum level of support and comfort for your spine. Before buying your bed or pillow, spend as much time as possible in-store trying them before parting with your money. Your spine should be parallel to the mattress and your neck should be in a neutral position when lying on your side.” We spend a third of our lives in bed and your mattress determines whether that time is spent comfortably sleeping. Bed manufacturer Sleepyhead has developed, in conjunction with the New Zealand Chiropractic Association, the best bed for back support - the Sleepyhead HD Chiropractic bed range. Designed with four core technologies to support you and your back while you sleep, the range is renowned for its outstanding strength, support, and easy movement. Not only will you have your best sleep ever, if you purchase a Sleepyhead Chiropractic HD Tolaga or St Clair bed before October 18, you will get 50 per cent discount as an introductory offer (terms and conditions apply).
Sleepyhead Marketing Manager Warren Roach says: “More Kiwis are waking up with aches and pains, particularly back pain, every day. A lot of people are tossing and turning all night due to the lack of support from their mattress which doesn’t just impact their sleep, but
also their health. The right mattress will allow your body to restore overnight. Our Chiropractic HD range has been designed specifically with spinal health in mind and is available with a variety of comfort layer options from extra firm to super-soft to ensure the perfect fit for your body.”

The grass is always greener ... BY DEBBIE OLDFIELD
W
e are now well into spring when there is plenty to start doing in the garden. Lawns are a good place to start, getting them nice and lush and weed-free for the summer months when we will be spending a fair bit of time on them. Some lawns can be as smooth as a bowling green, neatly kept, with not a weed in sight. Others are made up of all sorts; daisies, dandelions, Mercury Bay weed, Onehunga weed, and a wide selection of grasses that rapidly grow to different heights. If you have the time and inclination, a nice weed-free lawn can certainly make your property look fantastic. The secret of a good lawn is maintenance. For an existing lawn with weeds, an annual spray with something like Turfix or Weed N Feed does the trick. You can also go around with a sharp knife or a ‘daisy weeder’ and manually cut the weeds out, quite satisfying to do. I’ve done this a few times over the
years and it quickly makes a big difference to your lawn. If you haven’t already done it, now is also a good time to apply Sulphate of Iron - for moss control. It turns the moss black and kills it and then gives the surrounding grass a boost of iron, turning it a nice dark green colour. Of course, if you do have a moss problem, it’s usually caused by poor drainage, damp conditions or lack of light. You often find moss growing under trees or in the shady corner of the garden. It can also be caused by low soil fertility, compacted soil or an acid soil/low pH. Fixing these problems will help your lawn grow stronger and compete with the moss. In a lot of our Northland gardens, we have clay soil. With these heavier soils it helps to spread garden lime once a year, usually about now, and then two or three weeks later apply your lawn fertiliser. I know a lot of us don’t bother, but this annual application of
lawn fertiliser is always appreciated (by the grass). One of the biggest problems in a lot of our Northland lawns is Onehunga weed - the bane of most kids’ existence! Now is the perfect time of year to be spraying to get rid of Onehunga weed. Spray prickle weed killer (or similar) in late September/October when most of the prickle plants have germinated but before they flower and set seed (the next batch of prickles we don’t want). A second spray in autumn will reduce the prickle seedlings for next year. Please follow the directions on the bottle, applying the correct amount of spray for the area in warm conditions when it has been recently mown and no rain is expected within 24 hours. So now that the days are getting longer and hopefully the lawns are getting dryer, we can spend a lot more time out in the garden and running around on those perfectlymanicured lawns.
