on’t you just love the smell of spring?

There is something magical when the temperature begins to warm, flowers blossom and new life starts to fill the country side on long car journeys. You can clearly see the skip in peoples steps, the lighter cardigans and the sparkle of hope shining through after a cold (albeit mild) winter season this year. Families fill the famous loop walk with uncovered pushchairs and commuters dust of their pushbikes once more. In this issue, we focus on getting out and about, appreciating the outdoors and we’ve thrown in a bit of sport too. I talk to three main men in the local golf circles and the community initiatives that are being offered to Northland right now. I have to say, it’s got me thinking that a golf day out needs to written on my list of things to do. I’m ashamed to say I haven’t played a game (does mini golf count?) but, it’s something that appeals to the calming, mindfulness need in my busy life to walk the gorgeous greens and take in some nature while mastering a sport. Have a read about what Sean, Matt and Michael are focusing on at present as well as enjoying the new looks approaching in fashion, beauty and home trends right now. Enjoy some sun!

OUR PEOPLE

The driving force behind the kids, the golf in Northland For up and coming! BY PHILIPPA MANNAGH

1. The Northland Golf Club offers a free to all kids coaching and playing group every Sunday morning at 9am. This involves approx one hour of coaching/ games followed by on course time (playing either competitively or for fun depending on the juniors desire/level). 2. School holiday camps based at Northland Golf Club - again as above a mixture of coaching and playing. Usually these run for a full ‘school day’ and we try to involve parents that can accompany the juniors to partake as many of them find they develop a love for the game and can share it with their children. 3. Coming soon.... PGA Junior League Golf this has the potential to be special and change the face of junior golf in the region. Borrowing concepts from other sports and also programs around the world that have seen radical growth. The goal here is to offer a practice and playing structure with the support of governing bodies that can excite the local school children ages 8-16 FROM LEFT: Matthew Davis, Sean Doel and Michael Macdonald

For more information phone Sean Doel on 021 0747151

Golf Northland is the local governing body for the game of golf in Northland, they’ve been known as the Northland Golf Association previously. There are 22 clubs in Northland that are affiliated to Golf Northland. Golf Northland Inc was created in 2006 but was known as the Northland Golf Association Inc prior to that.“We have been in the community for a number of years, promoting and driving golf in Northland,” says Sean Doel, Executive Officer for Northland Golf.

P

hilippa talks to three leading men who live and breathe this sport. Sean, Matthew and Michael tell us about the exciting golf focus hitting Northland and the new initiatives that the locals can look forward to! Sean says the best part of his job is promoting the game and seeing the success of our representative teams and players as they continue to develop into leading players. “We have a range of junior events that are held throughout the year as various golf clubs throughout Northland, These are in School SNAG (Starting new at Golf) Sessions, we are looking to hold a summer junior series where there will be team events played after school.” “Working alongside NZ Golf, we are working towards their community golf plan through to 2018 while focusing on key drivers like Love Golf, She Loves Golf and Get on the green which have all had some great success introducing new people to the game,” he says. She Loves Golf is a nationally lead initiative that takes place around New Zealand in November. There will be events, promotions and offers in participating clubs and driving ranges throughout the country, all tailored especially for women. She Loves Golf is about letting women know that it’s okay to wear your gym gear on the green, play as many holes as you like and not to keep score. Just get out there and have a go! The 2015 campaign was fronted by some of New Zealand’s most powerful celebrities and influences: Lydia Ko, Toni Street, Amber

Peebles and Jamie Curry. And the kids are a big focus too! “We have a range of junior events which allow the kids involved to develop their skills and earn a place in our Northland representative sides, we have the junior boys and junior girls interprovincial tournaments coming up in September and October where they will put their skills to the test against all other districts in NZ.” “We also have various inter district events throughout the year. We really want to focus on working with kids who are new to the game of golf, we will be holding a junior twilight series which should be a lot of fun, we’re hoping to generate interest within schools and get groups of mates coming out to play golf from an early age – It’s a great game as you can play as a kid and as a retiree!” says Sean. The best part of Matthew’s job he says, is that he gets paid to do what he loves. “My office is Mother Nature and my clients are always interesting, varied and full of stories and experiences that help me to develop my own skill set.,” he says. “I could not do my job well if it weren’t for the awesome people around me that work so hard and the clients that are always super supportive of me and the things I do.” His role in a nutshell is to grow the club and the game of golf. “I pursue this through a combination of grass roots coaching all the way up to elite level, running and promoting club events and competitions, assisting the

current membership with retail and club fitting/repairs, in school golf programs, rules decisions and other admin tasks at the club. I have also been lucky enough to work with Golf Northland to deliver programs and also a few of the surrounding clubs to run improvement clinics.” “My PGA accreditation comes from years of studying under incredibly talented professionals and combined with my degree in sports conditioning and coaching I feel well equipped to provide a holistic approach to developing young golfers,” Matthew says. – Matthew James Davis, BSc (Hons) NZPGA, is the Head Golf Professional at the Northland Golf Club. Michael MacDonald, Club Capability Manager is a Northland lad, born and raised on the west coast in Dargaville. “I got involved in golf playing with a few mates as a teenager at the Northern Wairoa Golf Club and haven’t looked back.” “My role as Club Capability Manager is to help support and grow the game of golf at grass roots level, helping clubs to be sustainable and prosperous organisations. It may be through providing advice, information or leadership to a club whether it is assisting a club with governance, marketing, planning, member & volunteer recruitment or partner engagement projects they may have.” They all agree, providing support to people at the grassroots level and allowing more people to enjoy the great game of golf is the deep passion that drives what Sean, Matthew and Michael live and breathe everyday.

Pressing matters By PIPPA BOURKE

S

he’s done it in a Pokemon suit, in McDonalds and now outside the Council Chambers- but Trish Ford’s mission is no laughing matter. The Kamo mum-of-two is taking part in a 22 press-up challenge over 22 days in an effort to raise awareness for the signs of suicide. “It was originally a nomination challenge on Facebook, but it’s so much more than that to me now,” she says. “Suicide is happening in our community and no one is talking about the signs.” Ms Ford is a busy woman. She manages to fit at least

an hour in for her challenge around operating three businesses in Whangarei, the Kamo Community Fitness Hub, Something Beautiful and Something Beautiful for Men. She says it’s important to her not to just do the challenge in a room by herself. “Community isn’t about Whangarei as a whole, it’s about the groups within the town. By doing this challenge out and about in different places I can show that there are groups out there for everyone, there are networks for everyone and no one needs to feel alone.” Recently, Ms Ford did her 22 Press ups with Whangarei District Council CEO Rob Forlong. Being a man who regularly does karate, Mr Forlong managed the challenge with ease.

(From left) Trish Ford (Kamo Community Fitness Hub), Rob Forlong and Glennice Leslie (Kamo Community Fitness Hub) are taking part in the 22 Press Ups for 22 Days Challenge.

“It definitely wasn’t something that I expected to be doing at work today,” he says. “But all power to you guys bringing light to such a serious issue.” Ms Ford says she didn’t expect to get such a keen response from the council. “I actually just added [Mayor] Cheryl Mai as a friend on Facebook and sent her an email saying ‘wanna do some press-ups’ or something like that.” During the remaining days of her challenge Ms Ford aims to get to at least one more high school, having already completed the challenge at both Tikipunga and Kamo High Schools. “Adults are resourceful,” she says. “We know where to look for help. Teenagers don’t. I don’t want anyone to feel that they’re alone in our community.”

Fabulous spring BY KAREN MATICH POLWARTH DESIGN

ust like a good old West Coast beach, the fashion landscape has transformed once again. The lonely remnants of winter demoted to one crammed rack and rammed into a dark corner, to accommodate our new arrivals. And arrive they have, by the truckload, inundating our stores with radiating colours, fabrics and styles despite the temperature outside. So how do we make fashion sense out of this sudden overload, when we’ve just got used to the ‘ankle boot, oversized, white shirt’ look for winter? What is the ‘go’ for spring?? Emerging new trends from the gurus of the international fashion world seem to be very in tune. Stripes are a huge statement this year, appearing in standout jackets, tops or tanks, at all angles, defying fashion rules. Complementing stripes is the resurgence of gingham, in the form of flowing calf length dresses with irregular hemlines, skinny pants or natty full skirts. Designer are having fun with micro-pleats and ruffles, creating draped cascading structures unstructured dresses and skirts which flatter any silhouette. Having its moment this spring is the ‘cold shoulder’ look – cut-outs in tops or dresses for bare shoulders to peek through, creating an interesting, dare I say, sexy, appeal. Continuing on the sexy line is the skimpy ‘lingerie by day’ look sporting a slinky cami with shoestring straps. Pyjama dressing puts a damper on ‘sexy’ with its unstructured, loose, tie back, silky appeal, definitely an incentive to ditch the ‘onesie’. And of course denim, never out of the denim, in straight legged trousers, cropped jackets, chambray shirts – everything

that’s natural. So basically this SPRING you’ll hit the spot when you flick on that ‘cold shoulder’ top with ruffled sleeves, team it with a micro- pleated gingham skirt over patterned wide leg jeans, rounded off with a boldly striped pyjama style jacket flashing a bit of bling on the lapel. Oh and don’t forget your rucksack. How Absolutely Fabulous!! But probably a little over the top all at once – don’t you think Eddie??

H

ow we yearn for the fresh, clean air of spring and of course the warmth and sunshine it brings. This is the time to begin thinking about the change in our wardrobes. A great time to access our range of spring/ Summer clothes, looking at what needs replacing and updating. Perhaps looking at new styles and how we can incorporate them into our lifestyles. With that in mind I had my mind set on purchasing a white blouse. However, I didn’t want just any white blouse, the picture in my mind was, sophisticated and feminine yet elegant enough to bring the crispness of spring alive. A piece that would be timeless in my wardrobe. Browsing, I observed several different styles of the classic white blouse It gives us the illusion

of warmer days yet a great layering piece for the cooler days that are still yet to come. A true winner in every girl’s wardrobe and a clear colour to give lift to the darker hues we have perhaps been accustomed to over Winter. I was not at all surprised to find the perfect piece from Trelise Cooper’s range, a stiff cotton collar, full tailored sleeves and a delicate French lace. Just what I had been looking for, a classy yet simplistic blouse that could be worn with jeans and brogues or matched with a stunning heel and pant, offering so much versatility. Walking away after making a dream purchase is a true feeling of euphoria and contentment. It can only boost the way we feel, the way we look and our overall confidence. Live it, own it, love it…. enjoy X

Bernina Northland Fashion Awards 2016 Photos by Sarah Marshall Photography

The 39th Annual Bernina Northland Fashion Awards, organized by the Rotary Club of Whangarei South, took place on Friday, 12th August 2016.

T

he show was hosted by Toast from More FM and was heralded a great success with some very talented young designers coming through. There were 8 categories this year with first time categories Steampunk and Retro-Redesigned together with the Wearable Art categories, Trash to

Fashion, and Fashion Design categories. Every year more and more businesses are getting behind this event, they see the potential of an event like this in Northland. Some of the garments were created using everyday items we see such as bread ties, plastic meat trays, oil paintings, toilet rolls, flax, shells, old rugby balls being just a few of the things. The show this year boasted its oldest and youngest models being one designers grandmother in her early 80’s and another designers 3 year old daughter. This years ‘Designer of the Year’ was Fran Spick with

her garment titled ‘On The Rise’ modeled by Tenae FordMason. The garment was made from plastic bread ties. The major sponsors this year were Bernina Northland, Steve Haywood Master Jeweller, Henderson Reeves, Mediaworks, Venues & Events, Northland Document Solutions Ltd (Ricoh), Arthurs Emporium, Perpetual Guardian, People Potential, Sarah Marshall Photography, Channel North, Snow Bros. and Z Northland. Fashion in the Field at the Ruakaka Races

he Hundertwasser Spring into Racing – Art in Action race day on 10th September combines fashion with racing and art. In keeping with the Hundertwasser theme, a special prize will be awarded to the wearer of the best outfit “Inspired by Hundertwasser”, and will be selected from all contestants

uakaka race course has been getting a colourful makeover in preparation for the Hundertwasser Spring into Racing – Art in Action race day. With all funds raised going towards the building of the Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Maori Art Gallery, volunteers from the HAC fundraising group have been painting grandstand seats in bright colours in preparation for the fun and colourful event. L

ast year’s winner of the Steve Haywood Fashions in the Field event Carena West has competed in and won a number of Fashion competitions around the country so knows a thing or two when it comes to crafting an original outfit. Fashion in the Field is a competition for outfits suitable for race wear. How would you describe “race wear”? Racewear is a fashion in a field of its own (mind the pun!) - It is lady like, beautiful and sophisticated. Hemlines should be longer and shoulders should not be bare (Strapless and spaghetti straps are a no-no). It is almost costume like, and if you think of it in that way it allows you a lot of creative freedom! Can you tell us about your outfit for the 2016 Viva Prix de Fashion (as pictured)? When I compete in Fashions in the Field I generally make my own outfits. I actually found the yellow fabric for

project. Artists Heather and Maurice Carthew have spent many hours painting Blackberry in his colourful new coat, and he will be centre of attention, standing on the catwalk stage amongst the fashion contestants, on race day. Bill Colgan, Whangarei Racing Club General Manager, says the race day is an opportunity not only to fundraise but to raise the profile of the project nationally and even internationally through the broadcasting coverage of the races. Funds will be raised through sponsorship, a gala lunch, silent auction and donations on the day.

2015 Fashion in the Field Winner Carena West shares the key to her success my skirt almost a year before I used it, I just saw it and knew I would use it one day for something! I went for a longer length skirt (which as you can see by the other finalists is quite the fashion at the moment!) and the top was the result of some creative pattern making and a bit of experimentation (and wasn’t finished until the evening before Auckland Cup Day -which unfortunately, is normal for me.) How important are accessories? Accessories can make or break your outfit. It is imperative to have high quality millinery to go with your outfit - in fact it can be the one piece the clinches you the win. Claire Hahn makes many of my hats and she has such creative flair that I can show her an outfit and she will create something gorgeous to match it. Other accessories such as shoes and bags should complement your outfit (they don’t have to all be the same colour, but making sure

across all categories. Artist Carolyn Radford suggests “Hundertwasser inspired” design could be vibrant colour and pattern combined with natural lines, sustainable and/or recycled materials. Any of Hundertwasser’s themes (and there are many in his artwork) would be interesting conceptually. For example a play on his faces would be interesting in a crowd situation. For more ideas take a look at Malletts on Bank St, where the window display has a Hundertwasser fashion flavour.

For more information about the race day see www.ruakakaracing.co.nz.

the tones and patterns work together is really important). Gloves can be worn in they work well with your outfit (and can be a great addition if it is on the colder side) but they aren’t the be all and end all. Your outfit needs to work in harmony with the accessories, not be competing with them. What did you purchase from Steve Haywood Master Jeweller with your Supreme Award prize voucher? I bought an absolutely beautiful pair of diamond earrings- I wear them every day (I’m wearing them right now!) - Steve was amazing to work with and knew exactly what I was after. Any final tips for our contestants this year? Dress for the weather (September can still be very cold and Ruakaka Racecourse does have a bit of wind sometimes), take a friend and have some fun!

Do You Suffer From Fine & Thinning Hair? WITH CLIVE HAIR CLINICS

W

ondering what causes hair to thin and fall out? There are a number of reasons why men and women suffer from thinning hair. Listed are 5 key causes hair loss sufferers often share.

1. STRESS

Stress in any form produces hormones from glands around our body which can bind with enzymes to create a chemical messenger known as DHT (Di-hydro-testosterone). High levels of DHT will eventually prevent hair cells from growing hair. Reduce stress levels with relaxation methods such as yoga, meditation or moderate exercise.

2. POOR DIET

Your diet has a major influence on your hair growth. An imbalance of nutrients available to the hair roots from a poor diet can lead to high levels of toxins to accumulate, worsening a hair thinning problem. Eat a balanced diet rich in protein, iron, vitamins and minerals to grow healthy hair.

3. GENETICS

Baldness and thinning hair can be genetically inherited from EITHER parent and is triggered by age and hormones. Treated early hair loss can be significantly slowed down when hair follicles strengthen, stimulating hair regrowth.

4.AGEING FACTOR

The Ageing Factor will produce gradual thinning and weakening hair. High levels of toxins can make cells in the body think they are older, triggering hair loss earlier than necessary. The more stress and strain you put on your body the quicker you will age. Trick your body to stay young by eating well, being healthy and keeping active.

LOSING HAIR?

5. HORMONE IMBALANCE

Women can experience hair loss during pre and post menopause due to the imbalance of hormones in their body. HRT is often prescribed to lessen the effects of menopause, however HRT is not suitable for all women. Drug-free hair loss treatments are available at Clive Hair Clinics to reduce hair loss during menopause.

Gain Freedom From Unwanted Hair! Caci were first to bring laser hair removal to new zealand over 20 years ago and have successfully treated over 20,000 clients. Can you imagine being cooped up in a shower for an entire day, well that’s how long it’s estimated that we spend shaving our legs each year, that’s right- a whole day!

L

aser hair removal is a great alternative to waxing or shaving, it’s quick, it will save you money in the long run, and you don’t need to worry about getting caught in ‘hairy situations’, as it’s a long lasting treatment to keep those pesky hairs away! Caci have a laser hair removal treatment plan called Freedom®, which is pretty spot on really, who wouldn’t want to be free from hair! It’s a 12 month programme and each session is six to eight weeks apart to ensure the hair is being removed during its active growth stage; that’s why a series of treatments is required to catch the hairs in this cycle. There are a few different types of machines, all treating unwanted hair using an intense pulsating beam of light/laser; but for the sake of simplicity, they are often all referred to as ‘laser hair removal’. Caci has offered laser hair removal for over 20 years, and have found that the latest generation VPL (variable pulsed light) is best suited to a wider range of hair and skin types; making it a safe and more effective treatment for hair removal. You can expect to notice results after the 2nd or third treatment, and you will see up to an 80% reduction of the hair at the completion of Caci’s programme. As the laser hair removal industry is unregulated in New Zealand, it’s important to choose somewhere you trust. All Caci laser operators undergo extensive training, so you know you’re in safe hands. The benefit of laser hair removal will outweigh the cost over time, with permanent hair reduction, you don’t need to worry about buying razors, creams, and waxing kits. Plus, Caci offer interest free payment plans so you can pay for your treatments over a 48 week plan. Contact Caci Whangarei and book your free consultation today.

HEALTH

Eyelid problems

Structure: The supporting structure of the lower eyelid may be likened to a hammock, with a cartilage-like central stiffener element (tarsal plate) attached by two tendons (canthal tendons) to the socket bone on either side of the eye. If the tendons become stretched due to wear-and-tear or from trauma or even other eyelid surgery, the lid may lose its normal adherence to the eye surface and sag outward, a condition known as ectropion. Ectropion: an outwardly turned or sagging lower eyelid. The sagging lower eyelid leaves the eye exposed, and as a result excessive watering is common with ectropion. If it is not treated, the condition can lead to crusting of the eyelid, mucous discharge, and irritation of the eye. A serious inflammation could result in damage to the eye. Ectropion can affect one or both of the lower eyelids. Normally, the upper and lower eyelids close tightly, protecting the eye from damage and preventing tear evaporation. If the edge of one eyelid turns outward, the two eyelids cannot meet properly, and tears are not spread over the eyeball. wind and dust may dry out and irritate the delicate tissue lining the back of the exposed eyelid. This may lead to irritation, burning, a gritty, sandy feeling, excess watering, visible outward turning of the eyelid, and redness of the lid and conjunctiva. Tearing develops when the tear duct drain on the edge of the eyelid drifts away from the eyeball and can no longer pick up the moisture. Corneal dryness and irritation may lead to eye infections, corneal abrasions, or corneal ulcers. Rapidly increasing redness, pain, light sensitivity, or decreasing

vision should be considered an emergency in a person with ectropion. Treatment: Artificial tears and lubricating ointments can be used to moisten the cornea to prevent dryness of the cornea. Ectropion eyelid surgery is designed to tighten the stretched tendons and shorten the stretched lid. Cicatricle ectropion indicates a condition in which the skin below the eyelid has been scarred and tightened, thus exerting a constant downward pull on the eyelid support system. In advanced cases, a skin graft may be necessary. Ectropion can be diagnosed with an eye exam. If you are concerned about your eyelids, call our office today for an appointment Entropion: refers to a condition in which your eyelid rotates inward. Your eyelashes rub against your eye and cause redness, irritation, and abrasions on the cornea of your eye. Entropion is a common condition among the elderly. The lower eyelid is most often affected, and it can occur in one or both eyes. Most cases of entropion are due to relaxation of the tissues of the eyelid as a result of aging. Some cases result from scarring of the inner surface of the eyelid caused by chemical and thermal burns, previous surgery, inflammatory diseases such as ocular pemphigoid, or allergic reactions. Rarely entropion can be present at birth. Treatment: Entropion should be repaired surgically before the rubbing damages the cornea by causing infection and scarring. Prior to surgery, the eye can be protected by taping and pulling the lower lid outward and

using lubricating drops and ointment. In mild cases of entropion, sutures can be placed through the lower eyelid to restore the position of the eyelid. There are a number of surgical techniques for successfully treating entropion. The most common surgical treatment involves tightening of the eyelid to restore the lid to its normal position.

Lid Surgery to repair Entropion/Ectropion:

is usually performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. Patients recovery quickly and experience resolution of the problem following surgery. Post-operative care includes placing an antibiotic ointment for about a week. After your eyelids heal, your eye will feel more comfortable.

HEALTH

The all or nothing approach to fitness: don’t sabotage your good intentions BY CAROLYN HANSEN

D

oes your fitness or exercise plan have two speeds, turbo and idle? If so, you might be stuck in an “all or nothing” style of thinking. This way of thinking means you have to go “all in” if you want to achieve great results. You have to do everything correctly, or you might as well not even try. You either strictly stick to that eating plan and make sure every meal is perfect, or you screwed up because you ate that damn cupcake and go back to previous habits. All, or nothing. Maybe you can attest to the failure of the “all or nothing” approach from past experience. While it is great to be capable of pouring yourself into change, extreme change can undermine the potential for long-term success. When was the last time you tried a new exercise or eating plan? Did you start them thinking, “I’m going to succeed this time and follow this thing perfectly”? And…for a few days, or maybe even a week, you followed the rules without deviation. But then, a special occasion came up or it was someone’s birthday, or a holiday, or there was a “shout” at your work. And you ate or drank something you “weren’t supposed to” because it was off-limits from your eating

plan. “I screwed up,” was likely the thought you had because you broke the rules and this one slip up then turned into an entire day of “bad eating” because you rationalised that you already screwed up and ruined the day, so what the heck? You’ll start over again tomorrow! And the vicious cycle continues. You start back with determination but, inevitably, something again will derail your efforts. It’s either all, or nothing. Follow the “rules” perfectly, or abandon the idea. The all or nothing approach with nutrition or exercise causes people to fail way too often, or rather: the all or nothing approach fails them. You only have to look to the New Year’s resolution crowd to discover the truth of the failure from an all or nothing mind-set. January 1st is the date most people radically change their eating and workout habits. They say they are going to workout 6 days a week and completely change how they eat. From out of shape couch potato to “I’m going to look like her!” (or him) in the shortest time possible is the goal, and the all or nothing approach is the golden ticket. We all know what happens: Toward the end of January and into February, the “all or nothing” crowd has progressively decreased. Sure they were 100 percent “all in” at the beginning but because they likely “screwed up” a few times, they were back to nothing. It was too hard, too difficult. It was unrealistic and impossible to maintain. They gave up … AGAIN. Apparently they could not go “all in.” For most people the all or nothing approach doesn’t work. If you are reading this and are nodding in agreement because that reality is all too familiar, then AVOID the “all or nothing” mentality and adopt an approach that, instead will actually work so you can achieve and maintain, great results. You must have flexibility with your health and fitness regimen so when those events happen you can adapt and that is something the all or nothing approach doesn’t allow. If you want to achieve and maintain results you must be able to adapt to the situation or new

circumstances. Health and fitness, after all, needs to be a lifelong journey, not a quick-fix solution and for that to happen what you do must fit into your life and not demand you revolve your life around it. Sure, it’s challenging to stick with a regular exercise program or a healthy eating plan even WITHOUT the responsibilities of everyday life – kids, spouse, home, job and so on. Having to work late one day can mean you miss a workout. The thing is, missing a workout does not mean you have blown your whole regimen. Being affected by life’s little bumps does not mean you are weak. It means you are simply human. But if you have been pressuring yourself to be perfect, it won’t be long till you decide you are weak or that your job/family/life/whatever is conspiring to keep you out of shape. And then, you give up. It isn’t your life that’s doing the conspiring – it’s you and your thoughts. Getting to the gym once or twice a week or sticking to a healthy eating plan 50 percent of the time is not failure. You need to be flexible, especially at the beginning of a lifestyle change. Yes, it’s important to make a plan and do your best to stick with it. But if (when?) you falter, let your missteps help you create an even better plan that suits your real life, not the imaginary obstacle-free life when you first embarked on your plan. Its easy to forget lifestyle changes are not a single quick fix process. It is not a happening or an event. It is the result of 100s of tiny steps day after day, workout after workout and healthy meal after healthy meal. It is a systematic process, one that doesn’t produce huge changes overnight and is not a quick sprint. The problem with all-or-nothing thinking is that it does not take this into consideration. t’s so easy in life just to float; to mosy along on cruise control, with our auto pilot taking the reins, and not really thinking too much about the exact route we wish to take, or where our ideal end destination would be. So often – perhaps too often – we do things because they are routine, or habit, or because we think we need to follow the flock. We drift with the tide, and in doing so we miss many an opportunity and overlook chances to make ever-lasting memories. But if we knew that all of our actions in a day were to be scrutinised by somebody who was older, wiser, and could guarantee us a happier, more satisfying, and more fulfilling life I think we would all act quite differently. Having somebody available to give us the thumbs up or thumbs down with any action we took that wasn’t aligned with our values, or that saw us straying from our ultimate goals would actually be quite handy. Imagine how much more productive we could be, how much more of our time would be doing things we value, and how much we could reduce daily behaviours that actually don’t take us anywhere of significance. Fortunately, we all know someone who could fulfil this special role. We all know that person – perhaps not so well now, but in time we will come to know them very well. Because that person is our future self. And if we had the power, the wisdom, or the aid of retrospect to help redefine who we could be today, then I think most of us probably would. To grasp a productive and fulfilling life and live according to your own unique set of values and philosophies, there is one question which can qualify every decision and every action you take: What would your future self say about it? This can be powerful stuff. When you employ your future self you can overcome both minute and enormous decisions. When you employ your future self all of your values will be instantly and consistently reinforced. When you employ your future self life takes a more direct and more meaningful route. Because when you employ your future self you are placing the course of your life into the hands of the real you; the one who is thinking ahead, the one who has 100% focus, and the one who knows more than anyone what you really want out of life. So now that I’ve got you pondering and putting a slightly futuristic spin on things I’ll leave you with some of the things my future self likes to tells me: • Experience is the best way to learn • Let your heart be your compass • Difficult roads lead to divine destinations • It’s not WHAT you see but HOW you see • Dance like no one is watching • Stop obsessing over that blemish • Don’t believe everything you think • Spend time listening to your grandparents stories • Never rush time; time goes by so fast anyway • Stay close to everything that makes you feel alive • Do only the things that make you happy • Have more fun

GARDEN PLANNER 2016–2017 September

23 Spring Equinox

If you haven’t got your ground ready for your vegetables do it now, then get planting all the spring and summer seedlings are in store now. Sow corn, beans and pumpkin seeds, straight in their permanent position. Get in an early crop of peas before it get too warm for them. Potatoes can still be planted, remember to mound up around existing potatoes to prevent them from going green. Fertilise potatoes already in the ground every 2-3 weeks with potato food. Set up your Codlin moth traps ready for the season. Onehunga (prickle) weed flowers in spring spray it now, before it goes to seed and continues to spread through the lawn.

Team Tip: Save on space by planting your corn and climbing beans together. Build a mound approx. 30cm high, 1 metre in diameter, plant the four corn seeds about 15 cm apart in the centre of the mound. Once the corn is 10 to 12 cm high sow the beans 5 cm away from the corn. The corn will serve as a stake for the beans and they will mutually benefit each other as beans converts nitrogen and corn needs lots to grow.

New Year’s Day

Team Tip: Citrus fertiliser is not just good around your citrus tree you can also use it on use it to feed hibiscus and passionfruit.

6

Keep watch on the garden, heat and humidity will take their toll. If you do nothing else for this month concentrate on the basics, watering and the control of disease and bugs. Water less frequently but longer, the soil should be damp to at least 5cm to do any good. Water in the evening less water will be lost to evaporation. Keep feeding, use seaweed based liquid fertiliser as it can also help plants to resist fungal disease, apply with a watering can. Check your garden over regularly; remove any early signs of diseases and pests, before they take over. Tomatoes need some attention, remove any leaves that are shading the fruit, to encourage the ripening process. Watch any tomatoes that are close to the ground they are often splashed with mud that encourages soil borne diseases. Keep the water on your citrus especially as the fruit develops; they have a high percentage of water, so they need plenty for juicy fruit. Mulch around the root zone but keep the mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk so as not to encourage any bark diseases.

9

June

Mother’s Day Garlic and Shallots Shalllots can go in the ground now, Garlic is harvested when the tops have to turn brown. flowered and turned yellow and the lower leaves have started st Keep on top of the weeds in the vegetable garden; remove them when they are small. Use a torpedo hoe, remove at the base of the plant and leave them on the soil to rot. Hoeing also stirs up the soil, that aids in the evaporation of excess moisture and lets air through the top layer of soil. Get the potato bed ready by digging over the soil; add plenty of compost, leave it roughly dug over until you are ready to plant. Avoid planting potatoes in the same place as last year. Make your own Garlic Spray for use on soft bodied insects like caterpillars. Chop 100g garlic in an old pot, add to that 2 tbsp. of mineral oil and soak for 48 hours. Add ½ litres of water and 30g pure soap. Filter the mix and store in a plastic container in a cool dark place, to use dilute 3 tsp to 1 litre of water and apply every 10-14 days. Measure the ingredients don’t guess the amounts; they can cause damage as well. Most natural sprays work as a contact spray only, if the spray does not touch the bugs then it won’t deter or kill them it.

Kerikeri Garden Safari

Waitangi Day

Team Tip: Sheep Pellets is a great natural fertiliser, but if your dog thinks its food, turn it in to tea. Put a good handful of pellets in to a watering can and fill with water, once dissolved water the goodness on to your garden.

May

31

Labour Day is a good guide to planting out rock and watermelons, cover at night if it gets cold. Keep planting successive salad crops. White Butterfly will be active, remove the caterpillars by hand and make sure to check under the leaves where they hide. Apply Derris dust or for a natural remedy, try shaking white pepper over them. As your spring bulbs start to die off feed them with blood and bone, the bulb uses this time to store food for next season. Most bulbs can be left in the ground for many years before they need dividing, the exceptions are tulips and hyacinths; they are just too tender to winter over in the ground and will often rot away. Lift these bulbs, remove any soil and leave to dry ready for next season. Plant passionfruit and tamarillo, both need good drainage and plenty of compost to enrich the soil.

February

January Get mulching, mulch acts as a water conserver, weed suppressant and as it breaks down it adds valuable nutrients to the soil. Pea straw is the best mulch for the vegetable garden. Before you mulch you need to give all the plants a dressing of fertiliser but more importantly make sure the ground is moist. Mulching over dry soil will inhibit moisture getting to the plant. As a rule of thumb, apply the mulch to a thickness of 5cmm this will stop the wind and the rain moving it around. Give your roses a summer tidy up, prune away any old flowers, branches showing signs of dieback and dead branches. Once your liliums have finished flowering cut back the stalks to and leave to die off ready for next year.

October

If your hydrangeas have put on a bit of a poor show this year, treat them to some food. Aluminium Sulphate to brighten the blue flowers or Lime to sweeten the soil for your pink blooms - be patience it may take a season for the colour to improve. Pruning of your bushes can take place now, start by cutting back to the base any branches that are weak or spindly. Cut the remaining branches back about half way, making the cut just above a strong bud. Strawberries are planted now, pinch out the very first flowers this will encourage more flower for a bigger crop. New season fruit trees will be coming in to store now, plant in an open sunny site with good drainage. Watch for frosts and cover the most vulnerable parts of your garden with cloches or frost cloth, better to be safe than sorry.

15 Matariki begins

Team Tip: Keep the frost cloth off the plant, in a hard frost as it will freeze to the plant, providing no protection at all. If your plants have been hit by frost, don’t prune away the damaged parts until all danger of frosts are over, otherwise you will put new growth at risk.

Plant herbs and flowers for the bees, we rely on them to pollinate our food crops. Many insects visit flowers but the honey and the bumble bee are the masters at pollination. They prefer to forage in simple flowers, single blooms like cornflowers, alyssum andscabiosa and herbs like pineapple sage, rosemary, lavenders, bergamot and thyme. Complex flower heads are difficult for the bees to forage from. Plant in mass, to attract more bees, they will stay longer and keep coming back. Continue planting successive summer crops; check your tomatoes laterals weekly remove when small. Pinch out the tips of runners from cucumbers, melons and pumpkins to encourage more laterals to grow. Trenching your kitchen waste is a quick way to make compost with the need for a bin. Dig the trench, roughly half a metre wide and at least the same deep. Put the soil to one side; dump your kitchen scraps in the trench, cover it with soil, then carry on down the rest of the trench until it’s full. Leave until next season then dig over the ground ready for planting.

Pay some attention to your fruit trees, remove any fruit that has fallen to the ground as pest like codlin and guava moth w will complete their life cycle in the ground and continue the breeding cycle. Fruit trees often produce a very heavy crop on one branch. Thin out the fruit to reduce the chance of the branch snapping in high winds and improve the quality of the remaining fruit. Grape vines can also suffer from over heavy crops; remove any poorly developed or diseased trusses. As they begin to ripen you need to protect them from the birds cover them with bird net. Drape the net loosely over the vines, pulling it too tight will just open up holes for the birds to get through. Check your citrus for borer, citrus is a soft wood and borer can quickly take hold; control it with NO Borer spray injector in to the holes. Scale is also a problem on citrus, often thee first sign will be an infestation of Ants. The Ants aren’t the problem they are “farming” the scale for ys the honey dew that they secrete. Spray with copper oxychloride and conqueror oil every 10-14 days t) the oil will kill of the scale, the copper will help with verrucosis (the wart like growths on the fruit)

Finish harvesting the last of your summer crops, as spaces become available fill with winter vegetables. Make sure you remove all traces of the previous season plants; don’t leave stumps in the ground they will harbour pest and disease. Replenish the soil with compost, if using your own, dig it through the soil a couple of weeks before you plant, it can be a little rich for tender seedlings. Broad beans - can be planted now in cooler areas, warmer areas leave till early April. The seeds are large enough to be planted straight in to the ground. Pinch out the first growing tips to encourage the plant,to produce more. Spring bulbs will now start appearing in stores, planted in late summer/early autumn to flower in the coming spring. Buying bulbs is the one time that it is OK to give the product a squeeze, check that there is a bulb inside the outer dried husk and if the bulb feels spongy and soft then it is beginning to rot, leave these and move on to better ones.

If you are going to leave your vegetable garden empty for the winter months then plant a cover crop, this will suppress the weeds, stop valuable nutrients and soil being washed away. Lupins are a good choice as they will also add nitrogen to the soil, plant the seeds straight in to the ground neat rows are not essential good coverage is. These Lupins are not grown for the flowers; they are dug through the soil when the foliage is still soft, usually about 7-8 weeks later. Just pull them out of the ground, roughly chop them up with your spade and turn under the soil, leave to rot then dig over the soil prior to planting your spring crops. Plant sweet peas, as the first flowers appear pinch them out use your thumb and fore finger. This will benefit the plant, letting it become stronger before it supports flowers. All winter vegetable can go in now. Divide any perennials once all the foliage has died down, replant straight away.

Team Tip: If you want your plantings to look natural then grab a handful of bulbs and gently roll them on the ground – plant them where they stop.

TeamTip: Sweet Peas foliage is nitrogen rich, don’t waste the foliage once flowering has finished shed, they can be also used as a green manure, pull them up, chop and turn under the soil.

Continue planting cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowerr and brussels sprouts, they belong to the Brassica family and they all like a sweet soil , add a few handfuls of lime, dig in to the top layer before planting. Give your tools a clean-up, wire brush any dirt off and sharpen the edge of your spades, use Linseed oil on wooden handled tools, to help prevent splitting. Sap on the blades of your cutting tools will reduce the cutting power, remove and sharpen all the cutting edges. Give your sprayer a once over, remove the spray nozzle and wash under a tap this, will remove any debris that can get caught there and effect the spraying angle. Wash out the bowl with soapy water and run the clean water through the lance. Give your existing fruit trees a clean-up. Prune away any dead, damaged or diseased wood and spray copper oxychloride and conqueror oil, you can mix these sprays together. This will get rid of any pest and diseases spores. Remember to spray in all the nooks and crevices where bugs like to hide away through the winter.

Depending on your area your spring planting may already be under way, the important thing to note before you dig over the soil is that it is dry, working soil that is too wet damaged the soil by compacting its structure, hold off until its dry. An easy way check han to test this soil is to take a lump of soil, it should start to crumble when squeezed rather than form a lump. h that Herbs will be showing signs of spring growth give them a feed and remove any old growth t you missed in the autumn, leave planting Coriander and basil till the weather warms up. eapon Hang your codlin moth traps now, although they don’t kill the moth they are another weap in the fight, as they interrupt the breeding cycle .

Team Tip: – make your own barrier bands for your fruit trees, to stop the codlin moth grub making its ts way up the tree to infect the fruit. Use an old stocking, corrugated cardboard or hessian and smear itt with wi Vaseline or any thick non hardening sticky material. Tie around the trunk of your fruit trees about half alf a metre up, replace when necessary.

One big happy family

ROSE GARDEN REST HOME

W

hen Eunice Tsai checked her beloved mother into a rest home, they were both in tears. It was an emotional journey and, with that in mind, the director of Rose Garden Rest Home, together with husband and manager Boon Choo, has recreated the 30-plus-year-old establishment into a familyorientated rest home. The couple, who have lived in Auckland for 16 years, took over a year ago after the, then named, MorningView Village rest home fell into jeopardy. With a vast background in professional management, they were approached by the former owners for help, with the 40-bed establishment on the brink of being closed down. “We were actually intending to retire,” laughs Boon. “But then we came up for a look and found Whangarei to be a really beautiful city,” adds Eunice. “My mother is in a rest home, my father was also until he passed away, and my granny has dementia, so it was all very close to my heart.” Over the past year, the couple have transformed the rest home by renaming and upgrading the facility, retraining staff, appointing new positions and undergoing ongoing training themselves. Then there’s the family approach. “This is very important,” emphasises Boon. “We are a small rest home, compared to nationwide franchises. We believe that our staff, residents and ourselves are all like a

family. Our residents have been working all their lives and contributing to this country so now they deserve a good quality life in the rest home.” Adds Eunice: “It’s not just about feeding them and giving them a room to stay – they need more respect. It’s about communication, love and care.” And the couple’s hard work has paid off: their July Certification Audit by Health Audit NZ came back with zero corrections. “We are just so pleased with that and proud of our team.” They attribute some of this to their monthly meetings with the residents. “For the first six months, the residents had feedback for improvements that they wanted to see,” says Boon. “We listened and made the changes and now for the last few months, they are almost 100 per cent completely happy.” Some of these changes include the gourmet meals, which comprise venison, when available at the markets, or fresh fish and chips on a Friday. There’s also the weekly calendar full of fun activities like volley balloon, tai chi, sit fit, foot spa and hand pampering, story-telling, bingo and the popular happy hour with live music. Then there’s the former piano tutor resident whose lively music fills the home on a daily basis. “We encourage our residents to interact with each other and family members come and join in these activities too,”

says Eunice, who also takes them on outings in the van to feed the ducks, coffee trips or admire a view. Residents are also free to come and go independently (some have their own cars) or with family members, so long as they sign in and out. And the couple’s passionate, hands-on approach is clearly popular with the residents as they walk around greeting their extended family with warm hugs and jokes. “They actually care about us too – when we’re still here late at night they try and kick us out and tell us to go home for a break,” laughs Eunice.

WOMEN IN B USINESS

Helping small businesses succeed is our passion Name - Di Crawford-Errington Business name and when it was established Ontrack Bookkeeping Ltd. My business was established in 2003, with the company starting in 2005.

Describe your business We offer a unique bookkeeping service that can be tailored to suit any size business. We take the stress out of keeping your books Ontrack by developing and managing a solution that suits the business best. We are Solution Providers and Certified Advisors and helping small Business’s succeed is our passion.

support this organisation for the last few years. I am also the Treasurer of the NZ Bookkeepers Association. I really enjoy working with this organisation to support educate and lift the standards of the bookkeeping profession in NZ. We are doing great things in this space nationally and am proud to be involved.

“Having the guts to start a business when I did would be one of the things I am proudest of.”

What has been your biggest business challenge over the past year, and how are you tackling it? Managing growth has been my biggest challenge. We started 2015 with five of us on board and have since added three new team members, so planning training and supporting them was a challenge. We created ‘teams’ within the business with each team supporting and training and each other which took the pressure off me trying to manage this for everyone. Also having some strong administration focused staff has been key to the success of managing our workflows.

What do you do in your leisure time? I’m a traveller, explorer and adventurer. Our Jayco caravan is our beach house. Our home doesn’t change but the beach we are parked at does. I love getting away from the hustle of life and exploring our country.. I must say I also love exploring the world too.

What awards or accolades are you most proud of?

What is your proudest moment? Wow I have had a huge amount of very proud moments, as you do when you have children. I’m extremely proud of the wonderful young women my daughters have become. Outside of that, I would have to say having the guts to start a business when I did would be one of the things I am proudest of. Backing myself to take the risk I did, I wouldn’t change it for anything.

What is your most embarrassing moment? Now that would be telling.

What was your first job? My first official paying job was delivering papers on my pushbike in my hometown of Hikurangi. I recall I earnt about $11 a week, and probably spent most of it on lollies. I must have saved some of it as I purchased my first ‘stereo’ with this money. I recall working in the dairy there as well as the takeaway shop through my school years.

What is the strangest thing you have ever bought? A yellowy-green Daihatsu Materia that looked like Shrek from Whakatane.…. It was a great company car.

If you could be anyone else, who would you be, and why? I cant answer this one, there is no one else I would like to be. I spent years figuring out who I was, I kinda like who that is..

In 2007 I entered into the Westpac Business Awards and won the Professional Services Award. This was a huge win for a small four year old business and a real pivotal point in our history. Nine years on and I was extremely honoured to have been awarded the Bookkeeping Trainer of the year award at the NZ Bookkeepers conference. This award was amazing to win, being it is the inaugural Gayle Buchanan Memorial Trophy. Gayle was hugely influential in the bookkeeping space, connecting and training people nationally and internationally. Gayle was also a dear friend who passed away far too young last year. This award is the Associations way of honoring Gayle and the contribution she made to the industry. .

What community or charity initiatives do you currently support? Currently I am the Treasurer of Dress for Success Northland Inc. I love what DFS do supporting women to get back into workforce and have been privileged to be able to SAVVY | 23

“Gemma was exhausted last night

Trust us to take care of your fur babies

from her busy day. Thanks Kath and the Klipped team, i know she loves it there”

In 2014, Kath Dean bought a quiet little grooming business in Kamo. Her dream was to be self-employed and be able to have her dogs at work with her everyday.

T

hat was under 2 years ago, now Kath and her Husband Max have moved the business to a much larger commercial property – (still in Kamo), and employ 5 full time Team members to run a very busy, grooming centre, Shop, K9 Kindy and Training centre. “It has been an amazing journey” says Kath “I would never have thought in a million years that I would be building a purpose built K9 centre, or employing 5 other people who love dogs as much as me” Kath has a passion for customer service and credits her success to building a rapport with her clients (two legged ones) “There are many options in Northland for grooming, dog accessories and daycare centres” explains Kath, “I am always grateful that someone chooses my shop to come to. And I want them to know that, I also know that it would be very hard for me to leave my dogs in someone else’s care, So I need pet owners to be assured that their dogs will be fine, and that they trust me to take care of their fur babies. I feel very special that these people choose my business. Klipped K9 Centre in Springs Flat Road, Kamo is an open centre. It has been designed to care for up to 150 dogs daily, with play-yards catering for different sizes and ages. Each yard is fully supervised and has access to grass, bark, beds and water features “We welcome people to come and look around our centre, we love showing off our happy dogs and facilities. Anyone should be able to see their dogs interacting with other dogs and people. It is also good for the dogs to see people coming and going” Kath says. Bookings are not necessary for the K9 Kindy, If you don’t want your dog to be home on any given day – bring them in to Klipped, they are welcome any day. With three groomers at present on site everyday klipped has become a busy salon for dogs. One of the benefits of grooming at Klipped is that the pooches can stay all day for free, Kath explains. “We have tried to keep things simple for busy dog owners, you can drop your pup off in the morning on the way to work and collect on the way home completely groomed and exhausted from playing during the day. No rushing around to pick your dog up on time. We love this arrangement as it gives the dogs a break throughout the grooming process, and they get to socialise”. Of course if they are not happy to be with other dogs, Klipped has facilities for them to have their own space until mum or dad comes to collect them. All the fun of the day features on Klipped’s facebook page. “There is no better evidence than photos of your pup having a fun time when they visit us. We don’t have flashy websites, we want people to come and see for them self how amazing this centre is.“

“Fun times at the koolest k9 kindy in town, with the cutest pups”

“Bella has so much fun, and always comes home knackered!! Thanks so much”

Competition drives great results In real estate, regardless of the market, competition drives great results. So how do you create competition? There are three essential components:

BY ERIKA BLANK

1. Reaching your target market. In terms of reach, times have changed. In order to reach as many people as possible it is essential that no stone is left unturned. Every possible avenue of communication needs to be taken care of. From fliers to email to social media, from picking up the phone and contacting databases and informing your colleagues so they can do the same. The good news is that with digital communication the cost of reaching a large audience has come down considerably.

2. Once reach has been achieved you need to attract your target market. This is where top quality photography, scripts, photo selection and video all come into play. Not only must all these components be in sync, they must also be designed to attract your target market.

3. Ensuring there is a forum for the buyers to compete. Ideally in this market, this is at auction, but failing that a multi-offer scenario can be incredibly effective. This is where an agent who knows how to manage an auction campaign and loves the art of negotiating is worth their weight in gold.

Choose an agent capable of delivering Only by choosing the best agent possible will you know for sure that you have achieved the absolute maximum price for your home. It is also important to consider the company the agent works for and what their profile is outside of your immediate area. Buyers are coming from all over New Zealand and the world and it is important that they have the capability to reach them. You only have one chance to get it right, so take your time and choose wisely.

Success leaves clues By studying other successful campaigns it is possible to see what works. A good agent with a track record of successful sales will be able to provide you with information on their past campaigns and testimonials from clients.

Perfect colours for low-light rooms T he shortest day of the year may be behind us but any gloomy overcast or rainy days are not your friend if you already have a house or a room that suffers from lack of light. You can add good lighting, or go around knocking holes in walls for new windows or for ‘borrowed’ light from another room. An easier solution is to use the right sort of paint colour on the walls to enhance

what little light you have. It’s not about painting everything white – that can appear stark, and more like you’ve taken up residence inside a chilly bin. Having said that, the ‘right’ white can make a huge difference. Not all whites are created equal. Many currently popular whites have a smidge of black in them – Resene Black White, Resene Sea Fog and Resene Alabaster. These are very clean and versatile whites but they may create a shadowy feel in a low-light room. Check out the code that appears on the Resene palette card of these colours – you’ll see it starts with an N, which means it has a black base. Now look at colours like Resene Merino, Resene Triple Rice Cake or Resene Blanc. These have a Y at the start of the code, meaning ‘yellow’. And as we all know, yellow is a warm colour that will bring

a bit of sunshine to the room. You don’t have to go for a heavy cream to get the effect. These colours are a sophisticated, up-to-date take on cream. The same goes for other neutrals. There are many warm light or mid-toned neutrals in the Resene colour collection that are on-trend and elegant - warm greys and calming stone shades. Check out Resene Triple White Pointer, Resene Truffle and Resene Cloud to see what we mean. Then, of course, you can go all out and use yellow. It’s an intense colour that will reflect off itself, so use with care, especially in small spaces.

Other tricks to try • Paint the walls in a semi-gloss or gloss paint finish to reflect as much light as possible. The condition of your walls will need to be quite good, as gloss paint tends to highlight imperfections. • Use a large mirror to bounce light around the room. And glossy, sparkling accessories and furniture – a glass-topped coffee table for example. • Use light-coloured furniture and fabrics. • Use warm-coloured light bulbs but rather than flood the room with artificial light, use strategically placed uplights and lamps.

GARDENING

Are you sick of rabbits, hares or possums eating your plants? BY DEBBIE OLDFIELD

W

ell have I got a couple of solutions for you! First off a repellent recipe that I was recently given. For a small quantity mix the following together and spray on and around your seedlings, remember to repeat the spraying as necessary, especially after heavy rain. 5 eggs, 600mls water, 150mls acrylic paint. For a bigger quantity to do approx 600 trees you will need 1kg egg pulp or powder, 2 Litres of acrylic paint and 10 Litres of water. Thoroughly mix the egg powder with some of the water to form a paste. Then add the rest of the water and acrylic paint. Mix well and spray on with a backpack immediately after planting. It is the protein

smell that the annoying little critters don’t like and the paint helps the smell to hang around the plants for longer. You can of course put up physical barriers as well. We sell the 3 n 1 guards which will help stop rabbits, and provide a bit of wind protection, and also make it easier to weed spray around the plants.

Plants make me happy

BY CANDACE STEVENSON

W

hy is it that even on a stressful day a simple flower or glimpse of healthy foliage can make me smile, transport me for just a moment from the tasks of the day to pure calm and admiration. What is it that draws my eye and holds my gaze and alters my mood? There have been many scientific studies done on the effect of plants on our moods, productivity, relationships, health and air quality. Studies that prove the presence of plants in the home, workplace, schools, hospitals, road sides and prisons impact users of these spaces in positive ways. Some of the findings prove plants being present in a space the reason for • reduced tension • increased concentration, attention and memory • increased satisfaction and motivation, • reduced blood pressure, headaches, fatigue, stress, anxiety and eye and skin irritation

• • • •

increased reaction time on the computer stimulated sense and mind reduced symptoms of ADD reduced healing time in patients Other interesting studies prove the positive effects on communities when landscaping and planting have been used to create visually pleasing recreational areas. Noted effects on the behaviour and over all feel of the community show crime rates reduced, vandalism decreased, increased positive outlook for the community, increased sense of pride and respect for the surroundings. I have not yet even gone into how your body and mind benefit from merely getting out into nature and getting active, I will leave that for another time. I hope this encourages teachers, employers, nurses, etc. to enhance your and other people’s lives by incorporating much needed plants wherever possible.

BOOKS with

ANNEMARIE FLORIAN Annemarie Florian is an Author, Librarian and Bookseller for Storytime, storytime.net.nz Singing Home the Whale, by Mandy Hager, Random House $19.95 In 2015 this wonderful book was deservedly named the Margaret Mahy Book of the Year; it will forever be a personal favourite of mine. It features the extraordinary relationship between city-boy, Will, and a young orca, that has become separated from his pod. Linked by Will’s love of singing, the boy and the whale develop a special bond. Set in small-town NZ, and with a compelling exploration of global concerns, this is an exceptionally strong and exciting read for young adults.

2016 IBBY Honour Award : Writing.

The First Case (Detective Gordon #1), by Ulf Nillsson, translated from Swedish by Julia Marshall, Gecko Press $19.95 A fun and quirky first detective story for 6 to 10 year-olds. Someone is stealing nuts from the forest, and it is up to Detective Gordon to catch the thief! If only Detective Gordon had an assistant – someone small, fast and clever – to help solve this terrible case. Then he would be able to go back to doing what he does best: thinking, eating cakes, drinking tea and stamping important papers. Julia Marshall and the great gang at Gecko Press consistently enrich our literary lives by translating and publishing excellent children’s books from around the world. 2016 IBBY Honour Award : Translation.

Recently the 35th IBBY World Congress was held for the first time in New Zealand. Speakers came from all corners of the earth to share their deep knowledge of the world of story and storytelling; and how stories can reflect, expand and enrich young lives. Enjoyment of this coming together was only marred by the knowledge that a number of our colleagues had been denied entry visas to our supposedly welcoming nation. The IBBY Honour List -- of outstanding recently published books – was announced at the Congress; and a select range of new publications was also unveiled.

The Boring Book, by Vasanti Unka, Puffin Books $24.95 When the words in a tedious tome decide that life is just too dull, they escape. The world will never be the same again. The words jump into street signs, they leap onto shop signs, they decorate pathways and roadways and ponds. But one day they go too far… Bright and pastel colours depict the innocence and fresh joy when the words escape. These illustrations are a clever mix of gouache and Printshop; great for exploring language, creativity and freedom for 5 to 9 year-olds. 2016 IBBY Honour Award : Illustration.

BOOKS

IBBY (The International Board on Books for Young People) is an international network of people who are committed to bringing quality books and children together.

Banjo and Ruby Red, by Libby Gleeson and Freya Blackwood, Little Hare Books $17.95 Banjo, a good ‘chook dog’, rounds up the chickens each night; but when Ruby Red fails to respond, he cares for her in such a way that her life is saved. The illustrations accurately depict the Australian countryside story setting; yet are deceptively restrained. They succeed in showing characters’ expressions and emotions with great depth and individuality. This picture book is perfect for 3 to 7 year-olds who have an understanding of rural life and also for those who are more urban to gain some insight.

2016 IBBY Honour Award : Illustration.

Nga Ki, by Sacha Cotter and Joshua Morgan, translated from English by Kawata Teepa, Huia Publishers $19.95 A lively and imaginative picture book that shows the warm and special bond between a father and his daughter and their creative bedtime stories. The story encourages children from 3 to 7, to use their own imagination, to predict and build their own wild and wacky stories, using playful language. With the translation of this book into Maori, Kawata Teepa beautifully captures the child’s voice, while also drawing from te ao Maori and te auo hou – both the traditional and modern Maori world – in his use of metaphor and descriptive language. Put it on your list for Father’s Day reading. 2016 IBBY Honour Award : Translation.

I Am An Artist, by Nikki Slade Robinson, Duck Creek Press $19.95 Nikki Slade Robinson has illustrated over sixty children’s books and readers, including The Little Kiwi’s Matariki, which was named Picture Book of the Year 2016. This is her newest release – an exuberant delight. Our beloved Margaret Mahy many times opined that a properly functioning imagination is as essential to growth in childhood as is nutritious food and a warm and loving environment. It’s obvious in this truly gleeful picture book that Nikki Slade Robinson believes this too, and is keen to spread the message.

There is something very special about sharing food together

A

fter our recent tapas experience at Love Mussel, I came away refreshingly convinced that I now prefer this style of dining. Excited to try a few new experiences, my partner and I went for the small seafood platter for two, including fresh white bread and butter, my weakness. I’m a plain seafood type girl too but I stretched the taste buds tonight and gave the Kilpatrick Mussels a try. Quite honestly, there was no other option. For someone who was no fan, they looked amazing! I have eaten one mussel in my life and never went back… until tonight. Beautiful. The $39 platter was filled with oysters, mussels, salmon (smoked wings and fresh) prawns and accompanied by fresh lemon and one of the best tasting salads we had eaten. That dressing was divine. The bread matched perfectly with this dish and also filled us up comfortably.

To gear ourselves up for this main, we first chose the cheesy seared tuna bites served with wasabi mayo and seaweed for $13 and the Lamb Empanadas with Piri Piri mayo for $16. Both dishes were very different but full of flavour just the same. The atmosphere upstairs was romantic and warm. Breath-taking decorations fill the room, taking the diners to a place of class and relaxation… far away from the busyness of the day just gone. We were served promptly and attentively, given just enough space to also enjoy our conversation without too many interruptions and keep happy with friendly wine glass refills. For dessert, the choice of two wrapped pieces of Fudge Farm fudge was ideal. Dessert would have been too heavy this night but we did want something small and sweet to finish the evening. If you haven’t booked yourself in for the tapas yet, I recommend that you do as it’s a very different experience to the downstairs set menu dining. Both fantastic, just different.

Peugeot Speedfight 3 Scooter: toot sweet, it’s a hoot of a scoot

The Speedfight3 is certainly handsome, with an edgy-looking body

Jacqui Madelin discovers a great way to zip around town

It’s not often a scooter attracts as much attention as this Speedfight3, but its Peugeot badge caused a Mexican wave of double-takes wherever it went. Yes, Peugeot’s car dealers now stock scooters, with four 50cc models on offer, all of them rideable on a car licence. Kiwis who associate the French brand with cars should know it launched with coffee mills and bicycles in 1810, motorcycles arriving in 1898 at the Paris Show - with a concept model using a De Dion-Bouton motor, mounted on the rear wheel, that never made it into production. A three-wheeled steam tricycle launched the following year and the first car arrived in 1890, using a Panhard-Daimler engine. So there’s plenty of history to two-wheeled Peugeots, and innovations, too. Peugeot says it built the first scooter with plastic bodywork in 1982, the first electric scooter in 1996, and the first with a supercharged engine in 2005. It now sells 14 different variants from showrooms in just about every country bar Australia, the US and India. Here, distributor Sime Darby Automobiles is testing the water as part of an “all of life” philosophy aimed at putting

students on board these scooters, before they step up to the smaller cars, then buy vans for their business and SUVs when they start a family, followed by scooters for the kids as they get mobile. Thus far we can choose from a $2199 Kisbee, a $2299 Kisbee RS and this $2799 Speedfight3, all of which are powered by air-cooled two-stroke 50cc single-cylinder engines, with the pricier and very slightly more powerful liquid-cooled 50cc Speedfight3 Sport atop the range. The Speedfight3 is certainly handsome, with an edgylooking body, gaping “ram-air intakes” to the rear, and instruments that include a fuel gauge and clock. It’s light, at just 97kg, with a low centre of gravity thanks to a fuel tank that literally sits under your feet. Oil is topped up beneath the seat, the two-stroke mix thankfully automatic, accessed behind the space for a modest helmet, books or shopping, and there’s a handbag hook between your knees, too. The compact little engine fields just 3.2kW - a whisker more than the Kisbee and less than the Sport - a figure which makes the average lawnmower look powerful. The start button revealed the traditional two-stroke “ring-ading-ding” soundtrack, with an accompanying aural urgency that didn’t initially translate as I wound the throttle open.

I lost a few traffic-light wars, but was pleased to find it picked up the pace briskly enough to hold its own round town right up to the 50km/h limit on the flat, and it felt nimble enough provided I kept the throttle open and avoided long, steep uphills. The disc front and drum rear brake were more than adequate to haul it up, and the very modest suspension did a reasonable job over most round-town surfaces. Bumps were a different matter, the minimal suspension travel and 12-inch wheels not best suited to uneven tarmac, as you’d expect. Whisking through rush-hour traffic, running errands, and parking in the smallest of spaces were all grist to the Peugeot’s mill. There’s a bit of character to that engine and unlike most reasonably priced mounts, its sharp looks and that instantly recognisable badge attracted friendly pavement conversations. All that said, my preference is always for a more conventional bike for its better handling, and for anything with a sidestand - as I live on a hill sufficiently steep to render even the best-balanced centrestand set-up (and this one’s super-easy to use) somewhat awkward. If Peugeot’s gamble of punters after a scooter works, expect a 150cc version to join the local ranks.

n the 3rd of September Whangarei Art Museum celebrates its 20th birthday. This is an occasion for festivity and a time for reflection on the successes and highlights of the last two decades as well as the future. How can WAM continue to grow and best serve the people and creative community of Whangarei? It seems only fitting that September is the month that the galleries at WAM find themselves dedicated to the contemplative, peaceful and serene by bringing you two new shows; Elizabeth Thomson’s Invitation to Openness – Substantive and Transitive States which comes to us from the Dowse Art Museum and Medicine Buddha Sand Mandala – A collaboration between Whangarei Art Museum and Jam Tse Dhargyey Ling Tibetan Buddhist Centre, Whangarei. In Elizabeth Thomson’s Invitation to Openness – Substantive and Transitive States WAM is proud to present one of Thomson’s most ambitious installations to date as it fills an entire gallery which will be will be adorned and quietly inhabited by hundreds of white moths which hover in the space as though having arrived of their own accord. Blending with the white walls, their camouflaged bodies gently fill the space, tentative in their willingness to be seen, appearing as if this is their natural habitat. This flock of moths invites you to step into the installation, be immersed and become a part of it. Invitation to Openness— Substantive and Transitive States is an invitation to suspend disbelief and preconception.

In Medicine Buddha Sand Mandala viewers will be given the opportunity to witness monks Ven. Geshe Jamyang Sherab and Ven. Karma Gyasey create an exquisite sand mandala over a period of two weeks. Both born in Tibet, they became refugees when choosing to leave their country and families in order to study at Sera Je Monastery in South India. Together they have created many sand mandalas within New Zealand. A sand mandala is a two dimensional representation of an enlightened being’s place of residence and everything that is contained within it. The mandala is an expression of the state of complete enlightenment and is used as an aid to meditation. It is believed that just seeing a mandala creates a great store of positive energy and makes one’s mind peaceful and clear. Viewers will be able to expirence and mediatae upon the mandala from the 26th of September until the beginning of December when a dissolution ceremony will take place and the beautiful and fragile mandala, which is the result of many hours of careful work is ‘destroyed’ and poured into a river or the sea and offered to the nagas (water spirits): non-human beings who inhabit water and who are said to possess fabulous wealth. Theses two experiential and reflective exhibitions will be accompanied by a selection from the WAM collection featuring works that integrates a myriad of spiritual representations. Artists include, Ralph Hotere, Adele Younghusband, A. Lois White, Ellie Smith and Laurence Aberhart.

he Collective Marketplace offers great exposure for those mums who are working from home. These days many people are now selling their products on the internet and this is a chance for people to come along and show case their products to the public and talk about the services that they offer. Stall holders get to talk and meet with customers as well as network amongst themselves. Founded by Jane Frazerhurst from The Mother Hood and Brooke Gibson from Thrift Nation, the pair wanted somewhere that local mums in business could showcase their products and services at an affordable price. Attracting a broad range of businesses

from fashion, beauty, health and fitness to children’s wear and a number of food stalls, the number of vendors has almost doubled for the Spring market. “There really is something for everyone,” they say. The next Collective Market Place is taking place on the 17th September at Forum North. The market runs from 10am – 2pm and is free entry to the public. Jane and Brooke have big plans for The Collective Marketplace with a Christmas market already booked in November. Then when it comes to money, it’s easy to succumb to mindless spending, when your mind is on other things (like juggling work and family) We live in an impulse based world, that’s all about convenience “Buy now, pay later” In my line of work it has become very apparent just how little some people know about simple budgeting skills and basic cooking. Perhaps it’s time to start relearning the art. The first steps to achieving this is planning, writing a list and sticking to it. Simple steps that could save you money, create healthier options and best of all make you think before you spend. “The best way to break a habit is

Cool on rack and then generously ice with vanilla icing and sprinkle with coconut.

It surprises me the amount of children that don’t get enough these days I know for us, we start to go a tad insane if we don’t touch base with nature and ‘regroup’. We had spent a couple of weeks indoors, put down to winter, bugs and broken ankles and there was no other option at this stage then running away to the country. I think we all need that run away place these days as live becomes so busy and we always find ourselves switched on at everyones beckoning call.
