The Northern Advocate is extremely proud to be producing this publication once again and celebrate the achievements of Northland’s education sector in 2015. The Year That Was is always a fantastic opportunity for Early Child Education centres, Shools and Colleges in our region to show off a little and tell the people of Northland about their achievements this year, as well as a look into what’s happening in 2016. Congratulations to all the establishments who are represented in this year’s edition of The Year That Was and a massive thank you to all of the generous advertisers who have thrown their support behind their local educators, without you this publication would never see the light of day. Have a wonderful festive season, enjoy and keep safe!

Kids at Home is a nationwide home based provider. Kids at Home Northland services Whangarei to Kaitaia.

H

ome based care provides an affordable low ratio alternative to centre based care. The beauty is home based care is an extension of home life with a caring, nurturing educator who connects warmly with the family and their aspirations for their child. Home based care invites a calm setting as it brings together home life and learning. Our educators work in their own homes meeting high standards with continuous support from qualified teachers. Over the course of 2015, Kids at Home Northland has been steadily growing. We ventured into the community on excursions, weekly gatherings at playgroups and music sessions. These are a great time for both educators and children to spend time together as one big Kids at Home family.

Our educators understand the balance of home life care and providing sustained quality interactions. Lifelong learning opportunities are provided in a relaxed homely environment set up purposefully for nurturing children’s individuality.

OUR EXCURSIONS

Trips to the emergency services were inspired from children’s interest in fire safety and helicopters. Acknowledging children’s interests gives the child a sense of belonging and contribution so

they understand their own learning is valued. From these visits the children were able to gain knowledge about the role of the wider world of work, connecting links from the place of care to other settings that relate to the child. A recent trip to an educator’s home on a farm was very popular with our children. They were wowed and showed great curiosity as they were able to get up close to the many hand raised, tame cows, goats and chickens. They also learnt about caring for these animals and gained confidence as they investigated and explored many aspects on the farm. Simple, fun learning!

SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL BENEFITS

Our regular outings and events at playgroup, music, movement, and the library provide plenty of learning opportunities and social interactions with peers..

IN THE HOMES

Our educators are supported by visiting teachers who guide, advise and encourage professional development during monthly visits to the home. If you are interested in joining us as an educator please call Nikki on 021438431

015 Has been an amazing year at ABC Kamo Preschool. After our very positive ERO Review in 2014, we have continued to provide a high quality educational programme through our Project work and Small Group Sessions. Our Projects over the year have been inspired by our amazing large natural grass and garden areas, where the children have been able to explore bugs, animals, and natural habitats. We provide a Be School Ready Programme where numeracy and literacy are integrated into all aspects of our curriculum. We have continued to provide special days at the centre where our community and whanau were invited to celebrate different occasions with us, such as Father’s Day, Mother’s Day and Mataariki. Our centre is open year round and we continue to provide a fun Holiday Programme during the school holidays for our children and whanau with a “BestStart Activities Passport”.

We have revamped our UnderTwoYear Old area to provide our infants with a stimulating and attractive environment. Throughout the developments we have undertaken research and reviews and purchased new resources to back these changes up. Just as ABC Kamo Preschool, we provide the children with an exciting holiday programme and provide our families information through the “BestStart Activities Passport”. Our Van service has continued to transport children in the community who wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to attend an early childhood education. In the new year we’re excited about expanding ICT in the centre. This will provide children with opportunities to explore their world through the eyes of digital technology, and to continue to provide our families with high quality education and care.

We at ABC Pipiwai Road, began the year with a desire to research the history of our centre and where it came from. Throughout this journey we have looked at our centre Pepeha and participated in excursions that have provided the children with educational experiences. We visited our local mountain and community to explore areas of significance. We are continuing to explore this with our children and we would love to have you join us as we discover who we are…. We have also developed our gardens and as a part of this, we invited our children and their whanau to contribute to a Matariki evening where we enjoyed the produce from our gardens.

ABC Kaitaia....

I

t has been a year of changes and growth for us here at ABC. Our focus for the year has been strengthening ties with our whanau and community, building and maintaining relationships to extend our children’s links to the wider world outside of the centre.

It has been an interesting journey as faces have come and gone. We have enjoyed many events and activities with our tamariki, their families and friends. Here’s a look at some of our highlights; Learning about Matariki – we read stories about Maori legends, practiced our storytelling, looked at pictures and had a try at kite making. Meet the community – Staff took to the local A&P show to promote our centre and meet some of the colourful locals and their families. Library visits – We took our tamariki on several library visits to our public library. The children learnt about road safety crossing roads, looking for traffic and safe group walking. They looked awesome in their bright yellow vests! We had lots of fun exploring our local library and having story time. Teddy bear’s picnics – A chance for family and friends to join us for some fun with our favourite teddy bears, milk and teddy biscuits and fairy bread! Daffodil day dress-up – Staff and tamariki all dressed up in yellow outfits and had yellow themed activities all day, such as our great abstract

3D daffodil art. Whanau and visitors for the day made donations to the Cancer Society. Visits to our local schools - We have visited all our local schools to assist in transitioning our four year old children to school. The tamariki really enjoy these visits, and it is a great way to experience school life with the support and encouragement of their ABC peers and teachers. We have enjoyed including our whanau in stay-and-play open days. We invited families for an evening sausage sizzle with us, and have hosted some open coffee mornings. Our tamariki have really enjoyed having their whanau and friends in centre, proudly showing off their mahi and sharing examples of their skills with their families. Let’s get fit – Following our playground upgrade with new turf put down, our children have been engaging in some great keep fit activities. We have had skipping competitions, bike day races and gymnastic sessions. The children got a chance to have their say about what they would like to see in their playground, and we are now having some big new climbing boxes built. We are so excited with how our centre is growing and developing, and we are all looking forward to many more fun adventures and amazing learning experiences with our tamariki, whanau and community next year.

Comrie Park Kindergarten

C

omrie Park Kindergarten is situated in Matarau, in a rural community just fifteen minutes from the centre of Whangarei and is surrounded by beautiful farm land and mature trees. We make use of our beautiful surroundings and are able to offer children regular Nature Walks. We take the ten oldest children to the Glenbervie Adventure Ropes Course each term. This is a favourite excursion for our children. Our Kindergarten encourages being active and healthy eating. We are fortunate to be adjoined to the Matarau Community tennis courts and we have regular access to this sports facility every day. We have a special Pepeha created for us by the Ngararatunua Marae which grounds us to who we are and what we stand for, respecting the land and our people both past and present. Our children sing this beautiful Pepeha each day. We have developed and maintain a close relationship with local schools and the Matarau community. We have a wonderfulTuakana/Teina programme with the senior students at Matarau School where one day each week some of the seniors come down to play and learn with our children at Kindergarten. We also regularly visit the new entrants classroom and take part in School wide events (cross country, calf club etc).

As members of Enviroschools in the EarlyYears our programme is strongly influenced by nature, natural resources, enviro-friendly practices and sustainability. Our gardens and orchard are establishing well and are kept healthy through sustainable methods such as our worm farm and compost bins. Our garden and playground area continues to evolve with our community supporting us to create learning landscapes using native plants, rocks and decking. We are proud to be the first kindergarten in Northland to become a Silver Enviroschool in the EarlyYears! • • • • • • •

Kiwi Kids

I

t is hard to believe that we are coming to the end of our fifth year at Kiwi Kids!We have been on an amazing journey so far thanks to all of our wonderful tamariki, their families and our amazing teachers. Let’s start with a bit about us… Here at Kiwi Kids we have three areas, our Piwakawaka area for our infants and young toddlers, theTuiTots for our toddlers to 3 1/2 year olds, then our Kereru kindy for 3 ½ year olds to school age children. OurTui tots and Kereru kindy share part of our outdoor area which is great for siblings, cousins and friends to play together as well as helping with transitions between rooms. We are lucky to have our own Kiwi Kids chef who prepares meals here on site and fills the air with delicious smells throughout the day. But let’s not forget the children!! Each week our children bake afternoon tea for the whole centre – this is one of our favourite activities and we all get to enjoy their delicious baking. As usual our year has been jam packed with activities full of fun and learning. One of our favourite achievements for us and one which we are really proud of is the implementation of our bush school program – Kura Waimahanga. Thanks to the hard work and inspirational teachers we are coming to the end of our second year.Twice a week 10 children, along with 2 teachers embark on their journey to explore the amazing natural environment while spending the morning along the Waimahanga track in the bush. This program has really highlighted the importance for nature in our program, inspiring art, confidence, friendship, exploration, as well as creating awareness amongst our children who have become really interested in our environment and how we need to look after it.

At Kiwi Kids we value nature and the natural environment, so as well as our older kindy children attending Bush school, all of the areas use our private park as much as possible. Here the children have large amounts of space to run, bikes to ride, swings, chickens to feed and time to relax and explore in nature. We love to get messy here at Kiwi Kids. We love mud, gloop, shaving foam, sand, paint, clay – the list goes on! We encourage community involvement in our centre program. This year we have visited our friends at Onerahi Primary school, regularly have visits from the library bus and have been lucky enough to have some parents share their talents with us. We would like to thank our amazing Kiwi Kids whanau – our awesome children who inspire us every day, their whanau for all of their support and finally our teachers. Kiwi Kids wouldn’t be the same without you all and we really appreciate all of the hard work and passion you show throughout your job. We are really proud to have such a close knit team who have been here with us from the start. Check out our Facebook page for more photos and information.

e are a small center located on Bank Street (opposite McDonalds). We provide childcare and preschool programme to children aged between 2 to 5 year olds. Our staff strives on creating quality rich learning environments where our children are encouraged to learn and growth with the guidance from teachers passionate about teaching in ECE. Our small license ratio means that staff have extremely strong relationships that are focused on the learning and development of akonga.

encourage individual skills and emerging interests in the areas of literacy, language and handwriting, math/ manipulatives, technology, art and craft, music and movement, dramatic play, and outdoor learning. We provide a mix of independent, teacher-directed, and small group learning experiences to the children.

Our akonga are very independent in their learning and have developed a strong sense of ownership of their own learning. The center is very family orientated, with a lot of siblings attended, which allows a stronger sense of family partnership. Each child is special and unique at Koru Kids Preschool. We believe strongly in a “hands on approach”. Children learn through playing, using their senses and by doing. Manaia View Kindergarten

W

e are Manaia View Kindergarten situated on the site of Manaia View School in Raumanga. We opened in October 2014, a member of the Northland Kindergarten Association. We strive to uphold the cultural heritage of New Zealand, Aotearoa and the principles of partnership inherent inTeTiriti O Waitangi. We provide opportunities for our children to experience the languages, customs, music art and stories of our culture. We also recognise, respect and respond to other cultures within our kindergarten. Our environment combined with our children’s natural curiosity and interests inspire and shape our programme alongside a teacher led programme of respect – guided byTe Whariki the Early Childhood Curriculum.

– maori songs; karakia; ko rero ma ori; mihi whakatau and other cultural aspects as they arise.

We work alongside Manaia View School, developing our transition to school programme. Our older children participate in the school hot lunch programme on a Wednesday, and every secondThursday we all go to the school library.Together we are currently working on a programme where our older children visit the new entrant class for a few hours once a term. These experiences pave the way for a smooth transition to school. We started with a blank canvas for a playground with only a sandpit. Now we have developed our sand play area with a sand kitchen and shade sail; a mud pit; vegetable garden; exploration garden; orchard and swing bay.

For us, this year has been about getting to know our community and our community’s aspirations for our children. These aspirations are reflected in our philosophy and we have worked hard to embed practices that reflect this.

Highlights for our year include our trip to OneTrip Point linked to our connection with Mount Manaia. We made a Mount Manaia Sculpture based on our view; and explored the beach for ‘dinosaur bones – fossils’, and shells. We enjoyed a picnic lunch with our whanau and a play on the playground before we left.

Practices that have come about as a result of community aspirations include a bicultural approach to teaching and learning where children experience waiata

Another excursion we enjoyed is our walk to Bunnings. We created a mural and painted pot plant holders. The children all received a plant to take home in it.

We rounded each term off with a Kaihakiri – shared meal, as an opportunity to celebrate our learning. Whanau are invited to watch our children perform some of our favourite mat-time activities and look through our displays and information around children’s interests and learning that is currently happening. Matariki was a special event with a great evening turn out for boil up and fried bread and a wonderful Matariki inspired performance. We celebrated our first year anniversary with a Whanaungatanga – Community Event, where we invited our families and supporters and sponsers to join us and thank them all with a Hangi and entertainment from Manaia View Junior

KIDS PLAYHOUSES Y

Kapa Haka Group; Manaia View Hip Hop Group and our own children performing waiata. We had great weather, plenty of food, great support in the preparation from our whanau and friends. A wonderful way to round off a year of growth and development. We started this year with a vision to create a community focused kindergarten that encourages children and our whanau to grow and develop a love for learning and fostering respectful relationships, where children enjoy a sense of security and belonging. We provide free morning tea and free fees to ensure that our community has access to quality care and education. We feel that we are on our way in this journey.

Northland Playcentre Association

I

t was another successful year for Playcentre with our regions figures bucking the nation’s trends with an increase in numbers this year. This might be because parents now understand the benefit of parents as first educators or maybe it’s just the power of word of mouth. It could also be some of the amazing projects our 20 centres throughout the Whangarei and Kaipara District are doing that has attracted the attention of our community. Playcentre has seen a shift in learning experiences to those more closely related to the outside world of nature with many of our centres installing outside mud kitchens, bike tracks, clay pits and one of our centres turning a whole 1000m2 adjoining section into a nature wilderness. This is a trend that many ECE institutes are turning to with the advantage of Playcentre being that most of our centres are located on large sites which allows for bigger outside play areas. The 20 Playcentres got together earlier in 2015 to celebrate mother’s day by listening and learning from one of the mothers of ECE Pennie Brownlee. Pennie emphasised the importance of the primary caregiver in the learning through play philosophy Playcentre does so well. In 2016 we have Sarah Best providing personal development to all our members presenting a

brainwave trust seminar followed by a weekend of workshops on various play areas. Our centres provide a place to meet with like minded adults who can learn ways of extending their children through play all in a supportive environment and while having a cup of tea! Children get to mix in an all age group environment where older children guide and teach the younger children and younger children can learn from the examples our older children set. This provides for an all age (0-6 years of age) family friendly atmosphere. Many of our Playcentres also provide as extended session for just those children 3 years old and over. If you wish to do an activity with your child(ren) that is very affordable and is more than just gym, music or playing with toys Playcentre is the place for you. Playcentre offers all these things and so much more so like us on our Northland Playcentre Association Facebook page or ring us on 09 438 2155 for further information. Playcentre provides the first three visits free so you can get a real feel if the Centre you are visiting is right for you. Mairtown Kindergarten

M

airtown kindergarten is situated close to the town centre of Whangarei in Kensington. At Mairtown we believe in promoting a nurturing and welcoming learning environment that is also aesthetically pleasing. We are strong advocates for supporting the relevance of play as a tool for learning, of knowing our community and of being immersed and engaged with nature. Play is very exciting for young children. We believe that when play is supported by knowledgeable and inclusive teachers, who recognise and respond to each child’s interests and uniqueness, the rewards in terms of learning are limitless. Through their play children flourish, they learn about descriptive language, social skills, to be creative, solve problems and to develop knowledge about the world around them. At Mairtown we provide many opportunities for children to learn deeply about the world in which they live; one aspect of this is our Nature Programme. We are proud to now be well into our fourth successful year of getting children back outside, into nature and into their community.

In September of this year we were visited by the Education Review Office in which we received the highest recommendation possible of a four year return. Here are some extracts from this 2015 report: Teachers at Mairtown…continue to provide high quality programmes and promote strong community links. Children have a sense of belonging, responsibility and well-being. Children’s learning programmes respond to their ideas and foster their engagement in creativity, thinking and expressive language. Teachers work closely with children, inviting conversations that are rich in descriptive language and that support children’s theories about how the world work. To read our teaching philosophy, experience some of the learning and community involvement at Mairtown, or to read our most recent ERO report check out our blog at www. mairtownkindy.blogspot.com or find us on Facebook.

Porse

T

here has been a lot happening here at PORSE in 2015 behind the scenes to ensure that we remain top in class as the home-based ECE provider of choice for families and Educators. There has been over the last month articles in the news about quality in ECE –particularly the Education Review Office’s latest report about ECE services supporting infants and toddlers to be competent communicators and explorers. What this report said is that there needs to be more specialists training for those working with infants and toddlers to provide a highly responsive curriculum. At PORSE, through partnering with For Life Education andTraining, we regularly provide opportunities using the latest scientific research in early brain development and attachment theory to help inform programme development to provide individualised programmes for each child in care. We walk alongside our Educators and families to support you all in nurturing our infants and toddlers so they grow into confident and competent learners and our ERO reports tell us we’re doing a good job. The PORSE programme is family directed using in-home and community learning environments, and is guided by the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum,Te Whaariki. Forest View Kindergarten

F

orest View Kindergarten is situated on the outskirts of Tikipunga, close to the Whangarei Falls and on the way to Glenbervie. Forest View’s Philosophy is to provide a play-based, safe, natural and stimulating environment for children. They followTe Wháriki, which is the New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum. There is a strong belief within the team of four fully qualified teachers that all children are capable, competent and empowered learners. The Forest ViewTeam often receives comments from visitors and parents about their beautiful environment. Inside has a cosy, homelike fee; and both the inside and outside environments are set up to welcome and stimulate children. There is a strong commitment to building relationships with families/whanau. Children are supported by the environment so that they can pursue their interests and explorations freely in their own time and at their own pace.

Teachers support and work alongside the children engaging in rich conversations and extending learning opportunities In February 2014, Forest View Kindergarten was awarded the Lints Award for “Creativity and Innovation in Kindergarten Education”. On receiving this award it was said that “the team of inspiring teachers who are only ever limited by their imaginations – imaginations that are limitless – imaginations that fly into the unknown they have no ending and more often than not, a strange beginning. They provide provocations to tamariki that inspire creativity, inventiveness and innovation.” The environment is set up to provide provocations and invitations for the children to play that support current interests. There are lots of small, inviting places for tamariki to play as well as a wonderful grassed area, ‘rain’ forest, loose parts and bark area and trees to explore and climb. Many of the resources are open ended, with lots of loose parts and authentic materials being offered to the children. Forest View Kindergarten takes children from ages 2-6 years of age, with those aged three and up qualifying for the 20 free childcare hours a week. Outside of this funding sessions are just $2 per hour. Sessions are from 8.30am to 12.30pm or 8.30am – 2.30pm Monday to Friday. The Kindergarten is not zoned. Families from anywhere around Whangarei can choose to enrol their child at Forest View. Laura Stevens

Manaia Kindergarten

A

t Manaia Kindergarten we believe that nature is one of our best

teachers. With this in mind we worked hard this year to provide an exciting outdoor learning environment reflective of our Whangarei Heads area. With the fantastic fundraising efforts of our parent community at our annual Art, Craft and Food Show, and lots of great brainstorming from children and families, significant work has been completed on our playground this year. In January, tamariki watched eagerly as diggers extended the bank area to create a hill to explore and an edible garden space. An old water feature was upgraded and enlarged to allow for increased open-ended water play. The day the concrete was poured children and whanau were there to create stone designs in the wet concrete channel, leaving behind a stamp of their time at kindergarten. The old bridge was turned into a jetty to encourage imaginative play, and a nature kitchen space was developed beside our whare. Over the year, we have added scented plants to the garden. We have been delighted to observe children hosting parties, creating ‘stews’

and mixing up ‘potions’ in this calm and tranquil space. At Matariki we had a whanau working bee to create flower boxes and beds at either end of our swings, enhancing safety as well as creating a place to nurture the “rainbow of flowers” some of the children envisioned. Another great addition has been viewing windows put into the fence. Now children can farewell their parents by peeking through a kiwi, fern, moon or star. None of this would be possible without the huge support we receive from our community.Thank you to all those who have been involved this year. To keep up to date with what’s happening at Manaia visit our blog manaiakindergarten@ blogspot.com We cater for children from 2-5 years and are open from Monday to Friday 8.302.30 during term time. Call to arrange a visit, and speak to Kim our administrator, on 436 1262. Looking forward to another action packed year of fun filled learning in 2016. Nga mihi nui, Sally Griffin, Head Teacher

Avenues EduCare

A

venues EduCare was the first early childhood centre in Whangarei. It has a great history in the community and is a Community Based centre, this means that it is run by a Committee of parents whose children usually attend the centre. This year we received a fantastic ERO report which mentioned comments such as Children demonstrate a strong sense of belonging and are benefitting from the friendly, trusting relationships they have with staff. Children are highly engaged in their learning activities. They are learning social competencies and work cooperatively together for sustained periods of time. Routines do not interrupt the flow of their play. Good quality interactions between children and teachers are evident. Care routines foster positive attachments between children and adults. The ratio of children to teachers is very generous. The environment in the babies’ and toddlers’ room has been modified to create a quiet and settled atmosphere. Children who need additional help with their learning are sensitively supported. Throughout the year children have been involved in visiting rest homes to perform, dress up days, celebrating the World Cup Soccer and the Rugby World Cup, Jump rope for Heart, Red nose day, Daffodil Day, Loud Shirt Day, Cup cake day and donating food to the SPCA. Every term we arrange family evenings including disco’s, BBQ, parent teacher interviews and and this year we have also celebrated Diwali with a shared meal and the children making lanterns to take home. We also have coming up our big event of the year, a family evening which we hold at Kiwi North to celebrate the end of year with tractor rides and

pony rides along with a BBQ. Once a fortnight we have Carla from Just Dance come and take a half hour session with the children and we have also had the Aquatic Centre come in and talk to the children about water safety. Out of centre experiences have included Capital E theatre, My Bounce and My Movement,The Farm Park, Kiwi North, Laurie Hall War Memorial and our older children participated in a study on Water and did a tour of where the water comes into Whau Valley Damn, where it gets treated then to the Waste Water Treatment plant including a walk through the wetlands. This year we have also introduced online portfolios for the children through Educa. This has enhanced the relationships between home and centre as well as been able to share the children’s learning with family throughout New Zealand and overseas. On top of all this the children spend time exploring and enjoying our large, natural outdoor area which is naturally shaded by trees. Here they have many adventures including our newly added mud kitchen where they have hours of fun with sand, water, dirt and rocks. Our staff participate in various on-going professional development and this year have included Early Childhood Council conference, Kindy Rock music and movement, IncredibleYears training, First Aid,Te Reo courses, infant and toddler nutrition, associate teacher symposium, vulnerable childrens act and self review on different areas of the centre.

Te Kamo Kindergarten

T

e Kamo Kindergarten operates as part of the Northland Kindergarten Association and is situated at 5 Farmer Street, Kamo. We have a roll of 30 children and operate 5 days per week from 8.30 am until 2.30pm. We have 3 fully qualified teachers: Nicki White (HeadTeacher), Jacqui Organ (Teacher), and Hayley Campbell (Teacher). Alongside the teaching team we are also supported by Laena Hamilton (Office Administrator),Teresa Borman (lunch cover), Linda Halls (lunch cover), and more recently also Shelley Squires (AdditionalTeacher Support). The children currently attending range in age from 2 1/2 years to 4 years old and we have a number of siblings, cousins, and extended whanau attending. The recent addition of our two Pou at the entrance of our kindergarten reflect our strong commitment to building and maintaining a great sense of manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, as well as acknowledging ourTangata Whenua. Alongside the addition of our Pou we were also gifted the name Te Kamo Kindergarten as an additional acknowledgement of all of the above. Previously we were known as Kamo Kindergarten. Our most recent ERO report September 2015 reads: • Children are confident communicators who develop respectful friendships and positive relationships with teachers and other children. They negotiate, problem-solve and ask questions to direct their own learning. Flexible

• •

• •

routines support children’s decisionmaking and uninterrupted play. Children demonstrate a sense of belonging. Children are becoming increasingly knowledgeable about Maori protocol, including mihi whakatau, karakia and waiata. Maori children experience an environment where te reo me ona tikanga Maori is an authentic and valued part of the kindergarten’s programme. Teachers warmly welcome children and their families. Teachers value the information that parents share about their child’s home and community experiences.

Te Kamo Kindergarten Philosophy is based around support for each other, respecting our whanau and their cultures, celebrating and acknowledging success, and upmost we are always striving for improved learning outcomes for our tamariki. We welcome visitors at any time and invite you to call in and visit our environment, meet our tamariki and teachers and get a real sense of who we are.Tamariki can be enrolled at any age and once enrolled will go onto the waiting list. Historically the oldest child on the list will be invited to take the next available space, however, other factors and HeadTeacher discretion, may also at times influence this decision. Kei te ora, kei te whakatipu te tamaiti kei waenganui i tona ake whanau A child lives and grows within the context of a family or a community

We are all looking forward to another busy year next year.

Northland Space

Smart Start Pre-School

he SPACE programme is designed mainly for first time parents with new born babies. Sessions are held over 30 to 40 weeks in a relaxed, baby friendly atmosphere. Sessions run for up to 2½ hours and include discussions on relevant child development and parenting topics. It’s a great opportunity to meet and get to know other new parents. We introduce rhymes, music and books for infants. Reading material and ideas for home-made equipment are provided.

mart Start is a privately owned and operated family business. Four out of five of our teachers are fully qualified, one teacher is in training. We reside in an old historic villa in Station Road, Kamo. Our large grounds include; plenty of grass, trees, vegetable gardens, mud and water.

T

S

We ensure that only Ecostore products are used and white vinegar and baking soda is used for everyday cleaning. We use chemical free sunblock and our children wear brimmed hats during the first and fourth terms. 30 children is the maximum number in attendance at any time. With a large building and outdoor area there is plenty of opportunity for children to find a quiet place if they need to.

What are some of the discussion topics covered in SPACE?

Getting to know you and your baby Sleeping About becoming a parent Understanding Me (about crying) Establishing attachment What do I hear & see Heuristic Play Natural Movement The Beauty of the Brain UnderstandingThinking & Temperament • Meaningful Men • Reflective Parenting • Nutrition

The areas of play explored in the third term may include: blocks, painting, puzzles, messy play, sand, water, playdough and music. This is a great way for them to enjoy a variety of sensory experiences and make sense of the world around them.

Here’s what some of our parents have to say about SPACE:

Rosie: “Archie attended SPACE from 3 weeks to 12 months old and it was great; the programme adapted to his growth and development. The programme had a relaxed friendly vibe, covered all sorts of relevant topics regarding babies various stages and always had fun crafts to complete. One of the biggest highlights for us was ending up with a very extensive repertoire of songs!!!! It also made their transition to Playcentre super easy for both Archie and I! I highly recommend it to new Mummas!!!! Angela: “My son Ethan and I really looked forward to SPACE each week! It was not only fun for both of us, but also very informative. It was a great way

Our lovely cook provides healthy heart tick meals four days a week which includes; one vegetarian, one fish, one red meat and one chicken meal. Friday is lunchbox day, which gives the children the opportunity to budget their food in readiness for school.

Highlights of 2015 include: to get to know other mums and their babies, and I love how it encouraged me to get creative and think outside the square when it comes to entertaining Ethan. When SPACE finished it was only natural to carry on and join our local Playcentre which is still a highlight of our week. Thanks so much Kerinda and Susan, you guys are awesome.” Charlene: “My son and I attended SPACE last year, and we absolutely loved it. Not only do you learn about your child’s development, have discussions on various parenting topics, make crafts and resources to support your child’s PLAY…you also get to meet and form relationships with other Mums and bubs. I can’t recommend this programme enough, especially for first time Mums. I am positive you and your child will love it too.” Sessions start regularly inTikipunga, Hora Hora, Marsden and Dargaville. *A visit to the Whangarei Fire Station as part of our “people who help us” theme, which included a visit from an ambulance officer and two policemen.

*A Matariki Celebration which included a shared kai with whanau. In preparation for this our children; learnt one of the stories of Matariki, practised singing NgaTamariki O Matariki, made kites (a connection between earth and the heavens), planted a vegetable garden, made rewana bread and had a boil up. Ryan (one of our teachers) was then asked to send a write up of this event toTe Rito Maioha who added it to their digital newsletter. We also had a visit from theTotara Grove School’s kapa haka group who sang songs and performed a play for us.

*We built our own hill to climb up and down that has a tunnel through the middle of it. We used old tyres and some fill that we got for free (with the help of our parents). We had to ram the

16

clay into the tyres and then cover the mound with grass. The children painted the inside of the tunnel with pictures to make them look special and then we planted native plants on one side of the hill. The children enjoy running and climbing up the hill and also pulling themselves up with the ropes that are attached at the top.

*The children made a bug hotel for all the bugs that we find around the garden. We used old pallets, cut up branches from the hedge and found other materials around the centre and from home. Some parents even donated spiders and cockroaches from the own homes for the hotel. Once we had built the bug hotel the children then made special signs to show the bugs where to go.

*Learning about the environment and sustainability is a big focus of our programme. We recycle and upcycle, we compost and grow fruit and vegetables. We are part of the Paper 4 Trees Programme which provides us with native trees every year. We take special care of all the living things in our environment and our children follow this up in their homes. We use the digital programme Storypark to send our families learning stories and anecdotes and they in turn send us stories and photos.

The Whangarei Childcare Centre

T

ucked away in the middle of town is a very special place with perhaps the best outdoor space of any local early childhood centre. The centre was the first purpose built childcare centre in Whangarei (back in 1975) and several generations of the same families have passed through its doors and enjoyed its service. As a not for profit community centre, all proceeds, after costs, are fed back into the centre for the benefit of the children. We open from 7am and close at 5:15 pm, take children from 0 to 5 and are open all year, making it a great choice for working parents. There is plenty of off road parking and the centre manager, Elliott Longworth, encourages anyone looking for quality childcare to come along and have a tour of the centre. The centre currently has some vacancies which is unusual, so make the most of this opportunity to get your children enrolled without being placed on a waiting list and missing out. Elliott works closely with the Ministry of Education and points out that they are very keen to promote the benefit of quality early childhood education (ECE) as this helps to make the transition into school more effective. To help support this, 20 free hours of childcare are available to all 3 and 4 year olds at the centre, as well as financial

subsidies from Work & Income (based on eligibility). We have swimming lessons, themed days, visitors to the centre, trips out locally and regular visits by the library bus. Outside we have a huge sandpit, grassed area, lots of trees, 2 playgrounds, a swing area, a mini cycleway for scooters and trikes, a water feature, lots of toys, a big deck with natural shade and a covered veranda that leads to an large open plan inside space. Food is cooked fresh on site each day and the menu is wonderfully varied. There’s always lots of laughter, the children here settle in quickly and enjoy the feeling of being part of the centre. With a huge pool of teacher talent and experience, there is so much positive and constructive energy in the centre that visitors can’t help but notice when they walk through the door. Don’t wait to find out from somebody else how good the centre is; come along and discover for yourself our gem of a childcare centre, nestled in the middle of town. The Whangarei Childcare Centre, 8a Porowini Avenue (next door to the Kaka Porowini Marae), 09 438 7171. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Kaitaia Abundant School

W

hat a year!

2015 has been absolutely jammed pack full of learning, laughter, family, food, fireworks and change. Amazing! The year began with the welcoming of over 14 students and their families into our school community. This was further developed with our annual WHANAU FUN DAY at Lake Ngatu and our swimming sports in February. As the year began, students found themselves in classrooms where online learning was now taking place. Google Chrome books were distributed amongst classrooms, online assessments and Google Classrooms were now part and parcel of our students’ 21 century learning. This type of learning is the way of the future and we are running with it . . . and seeing superb results. Student engagement has jumped through the roof and we have noted greater depth and quality of writing amongst many students. The world as we know it has changed . . . our goal is to prepare our students for this new world.

2015 also saw the introduction of Real Kai in Schools (www.realcatering.co.nz). This amazing initiative has seen over 100 of our students being fed affordable, wholesome and healthy meals . . . every single day. We have noted better student engagement and this leads to better learning. Who wins? Everyone. God continues to be the centre of our school’s life with weekly assemblies being all about Him and His goodness. In addition to this, we have had a large number of former students speak to the school at these assemblies and, in one word, these have been INSPIRING. The government has also looked favourably upon us with this year’s Education Review Office report noting the school as being “well positioned to sustain and continuously enhance the quality of education they provide for the students.” They also note our kura as having an “inclusive, open school culture”, being “purposeful, collaborative and student focused.” In a nutshell, we are doing pretty well!

We love our community and being a part of our community. Our annual Fireworks Extravaganza saw over 800 people in and around the school as we provided a heap of food and fireworks on the first weekend of November. Our intentions were to bless our community with a superb community event whilst raising funds for our students’ learning. Thanks to the amazing Parent HUB, we accomplished both. 2016 is shaping up to be an even better year as we purposefully head towards authentic, organic learning experiences coupled with the new technologies available for ourYear 1 - 13 students. If you want to join us, simply contact the office on 4082671 or visit our school website www.abundantlife.school.nz as we have student vacancies pop up from time to time . . . but be quick as 2016 is filling up fast! 2016 - let’s do this!

Kaiwaka School A spectacular feature of our school is the annual Giant Pumpkin growing competition. Each autumn we have a competition to see who has grown the heaviest, the ugliest and the best dressed pumpkin. For years no one has been able to beat Michael, whose biggest pumpkin has weighed in at 72 kg. Michael has challenged the teachers and staff to beat him next year.

Principal’s Message

Kaiwaka Primary School opened in 1870 and is a great little country school that has served many generations of local families. The school roll is growing rapidly and there is a staff of 15. Our students are lively and energetic learners who love their school, environment and community. A special feature of our school is the Nga Tumanako programme that is offered to everyone. 90% of the students elect to participate in this fully, and their Kapa Haka performances are outstanding. Nearly all our students reach or exceed the National Standards. We have high expectations for every student and we aim for ongoing improvement. Our Special Needs students are well supported and are fully included in all aspects of school.

Our students are well-behaved, polite and kind to each other. We are a PB4L school and this works well for us.

Rolling all the giant pumpkins down the bank is great fun for everyone. There is a prize for the one that goes the greatest distance.

We harness all the exuberant energy our students bring to school with an exciting and active sports programme. We have swimming or fitness daily. There are also cross country, athletics, netball, ripparugby and tennis. The school also offers music lessons and there is a bi-annual production. Our community is very supportive of the school. This year we had the first gala day in 20 years, and it was strongly supported by local businesses and professionals who assisted very generously. Prizes, sponsorship and hard labour on the day were all supplied in abundance. Kaiwaka School is in a dynamic community, experiencing growth and development. The school is welcoming and provides a place for everyone.

Pyper Buxton and Casey Greig love the schoolwide cross country competition.

Kaeo School Teachers 6

Students 140

Principal’s Message

2015 has been another happy year at Kaeo School with so much for our community to look back on with pride. This was ‘Production Year’ with the school performing three great shows, the Senior School ‘Pinecone the Musical’, the middle school ‘Kool Kiwis’ and the Juniors ‘Walking in the Woods” to sell out audiences at the Whangaroa Memorial Hall – over 430 tickets were sold. It was great that the production was once again a major event in Kaeo and indeed the wider Whangaroa District and that the outstanding talent that our children undoubtedly have was showcased so professionally and enjoyed by so many. Success in the classroom was evident with excellent achievement against all of the schools learning goals and there were very good results in New South Wales testing where nine credit passes or higher where achieved in maths, english, digital technologies, spelling and writing. We were represented well on the sports field too with our Rippa Rugby sides performing well in the local tournaments, our soccer team unbeaten at theTaipa Football day and some excellent cross country results in particular Riley Roberts

winning her age group race at the Kerikeri and Districts event. Congratulations to our amazing Kapahaka group who under the guidance of Medina Koni and Whaea Gee performed wonderfully at the Waitaruke Cultural Festival and at our Matariki Celebrations and well done to our Famine Fighters who again contributed to those worse off than themselves and achieved a Gold Award from World Vision for their efforts. hat a wonderful year 2015 has been. Our staff started together and was inspired by korero Eric Rush gave at our day together, We have quoted Eric’s thoughts throughout the year E.G “ ..the only thing we can’t control is the weather…” and reminding us of the whanau values that are important to the growth of our children. Our teaching staff, support staff and students have developed our own modern learning practices with devices in the classroom. Sharing our learning with our community is ongoing both online and having showcase open days for parents and community members to see. We have really enjoyed the genuine audience our parents have been for our team. The trips through the year have been highlights for our students. Parents and

teachers taking classes out to Kiwi house, Adventure forest, So much has been achieved this year: • Passion week • e-learning symposium • health expo • Mermaids and Pirates production I am really proud of our Ambassadors student leadership group, who have taken up the challenge to participate in our school as role models. Key tasks across the school, learning support groups for our students/teachers or classes, and taking responsibilities in our school. We value our Kaikohe community and business and make a point of using local business and services as often as we can local supporting local. I especially would like to thank the businesses that have contributed to our students throughout the year.

T

heYear that was…

At Manaia View School we aim to offer students as many opportunities as we can to extend their learning and participate in new experiences, 2015 has been no exception. Integrating technology into learning has always been a priority at school but this year we launched our first 2 fully digital classrooms. Students started their first day at school opening their own new chromebook and have spent their year mastering Google applications and working online. This programme has been very successful and we now look forward to all our Year 5 - 8 classes becoming full digital immersion classes. Our junior classes have enjoyed equal success with 100% of ourYear 1 - 3 students all reading at or above their year level. Raising student achievement is our first priority and teachers have worked hard to provide innovative programmes to engage learners. While literacy and maths are key, developing student confidence is an integral component of our class practices. We are proud of our rich Maori heritage and this is an important part of our school identity. Our classes are focussed on developing whanaungatanga and a sense of belonging. Learning is immersed in Ngapuhitanga, Kapa haka is an important component of this, and our students pride themselves on their performance.

Students have enjoyed a successful year on the sports field. They have taken part in a range of sports from Ki o Rahi to Rugby League. The “Pools in School” swimming pool onsite and students enjoyed a heated pool and swimming lessons throughout the winter term. We are fortunate to have had the support of specialists from a variety of sporting codes to support our own coaches. The pinnacle of our sporting year was our success at the AIMS Games competition inTauranga. OurYear 7 & 8 students competed in Hip Hop and Rugby League with our Hip Hoppers winning second place, a fine reward for months of hard work. As our school year concludes we leave our students with memories of camps, festivals, sports, music and rich friendships. Our Year 8 students are ready to embark on the next chapter of their education as they leave us for high school confident and self assured. Finally, we wish to thank all those who have partnered with us to create a fabulous learning environment for our students. There are so many outside organisations, fellow colleagues, past students and Whanau who have either volunteered their time or worked alongside us to provide innovative and creative initiatives that have enhanced the opportunities for our children. ur aim is for everyone involved with the school to be active participants and contributors to the success and learning of children, whanau and community; to be strong and confident, to be prepared with the knowledge, skills, attitudes and understandings to function effectively in their family, community, country and globally. We are a small rural school with 14 students fromYear 1 toYear 6, and two teaching staff, including our Principal. All our children are Maori.

The best and biggest step forwards for our school this year has been electing a Board ofTrustees for our school. We have almost completed that process. We are also in the process of refining our school logo. The logo you see here on these pages is our third( or is it fourth?) draft – we are working on it, and we are nearly there. Our children will be the final judges. Our logo has to tell who we are as a people. This is our story and we acknowledge the wisdom and knowledge given to us by Wiremu Wiremu in refining the design of the school logo, so it best represents Mangamuka community and its school.

Moerewa School 2015 Highlights “Tena koutou katoa Welcome to Mangamuka School. Together we nurture lifelong learners.” line could be drawn below his elbows from man to man that linked his hearts. That’s us- students, school and whanau. TheTui is not just any tui, it is a Ngapuhi tui. It has its own korero. That’s us, as well. The moon is above our maunga, Maungataniwha.Te maramatanga he runga te arai- the light on the horizon. Our sights are set and we are guided.

Principal’s Message

Kia ora everyone. My name isYanje Klaricich. I have been here sinceTerm 3 and in a short space of time we have achieved so many things.

Ngapuhi leader Wiremu Wiremu told how soldiers of the Maori Battalion lifted together heavy equipment by grasping each other’s fists and holding their elbows high. In doing this, each man was bound to the other and together a

My priority is ‘to keep the main thing the main thing’- educational success for every child. The goal is for every child to know what their learning pathway is, where they are on it and what they have to do next. Of equal importance too is children’s role as ahi kaa- the keepers of the home fires. The cultural abilities and qualities that are needed to meet the responsibilities of this role are foundational to their learning experiences. • I believe one of the key factors towards realising this as a school, is the design and implementation of the school based curriculum. It has to be unique because Mangamuka is unique. Learning with, and for, the Community will be a feature of what and how learning will happen for students.

We’ve been busy! The youngest boys in the school made the hugest mess. They had fun!

We painted Planter Boxes for our new gardens. Each planter box had to tell a story.

Just about everybody was at the school to help with the gardens.

A no planting day gave us a chance to make a mask for Halloween.

The zig zag pattern is called Kaokao. It is a traditional design used in taniko and tukutuku weaving. It is the symbol of strength and unity. Ehara taku toa I te toa takitahi engari he toa takimano. My strength does not come from me alone but from many.

This year Moerewa School welcomed a new Principal, JasonTane. He has worked hard this year to introduce new ideas and build relationships with staff and tamariki. We also sadly lost a number of staff who had been instrumental in steering the waka for a number of years. We acknowledge their achievements and passion for our kura as we paddle forward on a new journey of growth and learning. When the students were asked what the highlight of their year was, one thing stood out.Their love of learning. Sure, some enjoyed the playground or eating lunch but for many of them their highlight was their varied and interesting classroom programmes. “I thoroughly enjoy the educational programmes.” Hori “I like working with our teachers. They are reliable and help us improve our learning.” Taylor Mae “I love moving to higher levels in my work.” Bailey Moerewa kids have loved participating in new programmes this year; enjoying sports with Project Energize and a visit from the Life Education van. However, the main buzz on everyone’s lips was… swimming lessons! Due to a leak the school’s own pool has been in-operable since 2009. InTerm 1

this year the school vans were red-hot, shuttling classes to and from the Bay of Islands Community Pool for their first swimming lessons in five years! “I had to learn to swim so I don’t drown.” Quintyn Early in the year we celebrated our Ngati Hine roots with kapahaka at the Ahuareka Fesitval held at Otiria Marae. Our bi-lingual classes are named after our tupuna, Hineamaru and her whanau, and our akonga recite their pepeha on the taumata every morning. “I love pangarau (maths) and tuhituhi (writing).” Peyton Another highlight for the children was at the end of Term 3 when the school hall resounded with Irish jigs, Highland flings, Fijian patepate and Waltzing Matilda as each class performed a native song or dance from a country in the World Cup. The tamariki then manned a stall, decked out in national flags and loaded with food from their chosen location and our pukus were filled with cucumber sandwiches, Welsh cheese cakes, vol au vents and Argentinian pastries. “Learning about the RWC taught me about teamwork and other cultures.” Mereana Finally, we wish everyone a safe and Merry Christmas and all the best for 2016.

Ohaeawai School Whakapakari Tinana Shield

National Young Leaders Day Auckland

We were just about to kick off. Our team was pumped to begin. The rpm in my body was flowing like a river. The horn hooted fiercely with sound and vibration. Term 2 the biggest game of the year has begun. West kicked off. Only a couple of minutes in and they had the first try. The halftime whistle blew, we were exhausted and tired. The score was 22 12 to us. I had 2 tries Joseph 2, Arapeta 4, and Jaydon 1. Second half we carried on, committed to taking the shield for Ohaeawai.

Hearts pumping, suitcases racing behind us.Year 6s yelling.

Finally the game was over, my rpm was out. We had won! First time in ten years for Ohaeawai. We have the Whakapakari Tinana Shield “Yes!”. The final score was 38 22. can we hold onto it for 2016?

We’re off driving down the bumpy road, buckled up and ready to start our adventure. We arrived at our clean, tidy motel, and dressed for dinner. Ribs! dripping with flavour, delicious!. We finished our dinner with very messy faces. Bang the bowling ball hit the ground like a bomb ready to explode. Bowling balls rolled around hitting enemies over.

The next day came very fast. We got up early, looking our best. We arrived at the stadium and sat slightly overwhelmed. People filled the stadium with sounds of laughter and happiness. We listened to William Pike, he had an amazing story to tell, he is so brave. All the speakers were amazing. Jamie McDell also came on stage and talked about how she became a singer, it was so cool. It was an amazing day with important messages for us to take away.

By ZaedynTe Haara

Zoofari Experience Ohaeawai and Kawakawa Year 6 students travelled on a double decker bus to Auckland Zoo. It was Wednesday morning the sun was shining and the people were ihiihi. When we arrived, the animals were yelling and the birds were tweeting. The wings of the birds were ataahua, many were ka rawe. We

had time to view all the animals and take lots of photos. Unfortunately the rain poured down, but we still managed to go out into the dark rainy night and play a game. We had an amazing trip, learning about NZ native birds and animals.

Pet Day Animals everywhere, standing in the heat, sizzling like sausages in a frying pan. Cool fresh air blew into our faces, hopefully cooling the animals too. We ran through the crowds like electricity going into the powerline. The lambs were so cute and curly, the calves silky soft. I raced over to watch the Grand Parade. First there were reptiles, creepy crawlies, fish, calves, cats, chickens, lambs and goats. What a menagerie! Our vaseline saucers and vegetable sculptures were judged and on display also. Another very successful Pet Day at Ohaeawai!

Opua School

O

pua School is a co-educational, multicultural, state primary school of 100 to 120 students from Reception toYear 8, serving not only Opua itself but also a wide and diverse area beyond, attracting children from nearby towns and rural areas and from both sides of the Waikare inlet. We are a school of choice with a long and proud history. Our philosophy is that all pupils should learn to care for themselves, each other and their community and be open and excited about sharing each other’s successes. The pupils should also be challenged to reach their full potential, helping and encouraging them to develop talents, self-worth, respect and pride in achievement. This is reflected in the principles of our curriculum by having high expectations for students to learn, to excel and to be given space to grow from children into confident, young adults ready for the next stage of their learning. Diversity is one of the strengths of Opua School. In the school, diversity is celebrated within a supportive family atmosphere (whanaungatanga) and through our nurturing of the ‘Caring and Sharing’ philosophy (manaakitanga). Opua School celebrates diversity within an open and welcoming climate in which local, national and international students learn together and share their differences as well as their similarities. Opua has an effective, very committed Board of Trustees and a supportive, energetic PTA. We have just received our Confirmed 2015 Education Review Office report. We are pleased with the accuracy and positivity of this report. It highlights that we are a safe and successful school. The full version can be accessed from our website – opua.school.nz. Your children are always most welcome at Opua School. We have an open enrolment policy. If you would like to discuss a future enrolment and/or would appreciate a tour of our school to help you in your decision-making process, please ring our Main Office 0n 09 4027840 to organise an appointment time or, alternatively, don’t hesitate to email me at principal@opua.school.nz.

Desire to provide clarity – particularly in regard to the Boards role but it has not gone far enough. Provide greater direction Less bureaucracy for high performing schools Greater accountability Codifying into law

Negatives

The review needs to look at the make-up of the board -the role of the Principal being both CEO and board member, therefor having voting rights. This muddies the waters for many boards. A significant part of the discussion document schools are currently doing The discussion document describes the “what” but not the “how” The MoE facilitator was unable to fill in the gaps regarding many queries Teaching staff need the detail By not providing the detail and coming out with the Bill in the New Year , it makes the consultation feel nominal rather than real Consultation is occurring at the worst possible time for teaching staff, school boards and Principals There has not been any allowance to consult with the students, the most important group in this review! The consultation with stakeholders has been done very poorly It would appear that the Ministry will have more power once the legislation is passed. It is the then critical that the Ministry has more capable staff! There needs be less bureaucracy for all schools A bigger and better vision is needed

e are a fantastic semi rural school just south of Whangarei. Our seven classroom school sits on the quiet Valley View Rd, 5km south of town. Students enjoy a 360m cycling track during break times. The children are very active and imaginative as they explore the large open spaces of our grounds, making up ever changing fun and imaginative games. The school is nestled beside Otaika Valley Stream and a DOC reserve, where students have monitored whitebait and stream quality, and explore the natural local environment. Our Environmental area continues to grow. A native plant nursery has added to the existing chookhouse, raised gardens and orchard.

There is a fantastic junior area for children to run, jump and play around a large sandpit. When you visit through break times, children will be found riding on scooters, skateboards, roller blades and bikes. They will be running, chasing, laughing and enjoying themselves.

overnight stay at school followed by a fun day. The students are highly energetic around the playground and enjoyed the wide range of physical education opportunties throughout the year. We had a health focus on Keeping Ourself Safe; Life Education on ‘Self Esteem’. Science continues to be a regularly and important part of the curriculum. Kapa Haka Fridays helped the students prepare for the third term concert. This year, our theme was kiwiana. The following day, the concert was presented to our community of grandparents. We had record numbers with approximately 90 grandparents enjoying their grandchildren, sharing a morning tea and time within the classrooms. This would have to be one of the most special events of the year and grows in popularity.

tamatea Christian School is Maungaturoto’s very ownYear 1 to 13 Private School. As we are a Christian school all teaching and activities are Biblically centred. We do not use N.C.E.A but prefer to use Accelerated Christian Education or the A.C.E. programme which is accepted along with the Cambridge exam by New Zealand universities. A.C.E is a highly academic mastery based programme designed to maximise all students learning. A.C.E allows for each student to work at their own pace, in each subject area and to receive one on one teaching as required regardless of their ability, nobody is left behind. A.C.E. has a heavy emphasis on self-motivation, self-directed learning, goal setting and excellence.

For ANZAC commemorations children were involved in laying crosses at the War Memorial, and got up early for the dawn service. The rest of the school had an ANZAC ceremony and laying of crosses at school.

Our school has a family atmosphere. The older students take great care of the younger ones while learning about responsibility and leadership. Many parents volunteer in the school throughout the week and can see firsthand how focused students and staff are on the task at hand. The schools strong Christian character and values mean that students are able to learn in an environment free from many of society’s problems and temptations.

Education outside the classroom is important to our community. This involved a senior school camp to Parua Bay Christian camp, walks, exploring marine reserves, stand up paddle boarding and sea biscuiting. The junior school visited Marsden Bay and had an

We had a four week, term three holiday, to allow families to travel overseas. A small number of staff and students went on a mission trip to Vanuatu. We had a young lady from Vanuatu in the school for a term on a cultural exchange. Pet and flower day was a great success. Our students competed enthusiastically in our Interschool Athletics, Cross Country and debating. We excelled in raising money for the Forty Hour Famine and run for Bibles. Our PTA are great caterers; money raised was used to improve our playground. This year has seen the mostYear 13 graduates ever, most with honours. Well done senior students. Pakotai School

P

akotai School was first established in 1905. Since then, it has proudly served its community and been a focal point for whanau. We are a full primary, fromYear 1 toYear 8. We are located 45 minutes west of Whangarei, nestled amongst some very beautiful rolling hills and farmland. We are overlooked byTeTarai o Rahira, and sited on the banks of the Mangakahia Awa. We are very conscious of our future, but also proud of our past. Our school is an idyllic setting for learning. Most of what we need is close by, so we do not have to go far to find great learning resources. Our school has a strong local community and whanau that is prepared to be involved and help out in whatever way they are able. We have a policy of openness and we pride ourselves in being a focal point for much of what goes on around our community. We have a long tradition of Agricultural Days and Market days that help involve our families and whanau in what we are striving to achieve. We encourage whanau involvement, and our facilities are considered a community resource. Our students are very self sufficient and our environment suits their resourceful natures. They have many talents that they are able to freely express at school, and we are committed to a wide range of learning opportunities of an academic and practical nature. We offer many learning opportunities on site that are not always available to city or town schools. Our roll is small which ultimately means that our teacher to pupil ratios are small and, therefore, our tamariki receive much more teacher time than that which a student could expect in much larger schools. Student learning is therefore individually focussed and much more immediate.

Our environment is important to us and we have a strong belief in looking after our natural resources We make the most of outdoor learning which often incorporates our community gardens. Our students take a full part in planning our activities around Matariki and have a voice in planning of other school events. We have a strong healthy eating programme which is well supported by Sport Northland. Our senior students travel to technology classes every second week and we also offer our younger students opportunities to develop their practical talents too through tinkering classes involving wood

work and construction, hut building, kite building, crafts, and cooking classes amongst other things. We give our students many opportunities to express their natural skills and talents. 2015 has been the second year that Pakotai School has been involved with the William Pike Challenge programme for our senior students. This has offered a wide range of challenging EOTC activities to add to their skill base and life experience. This year our students have done horse trekking, archery, paddle boarding, various treks and

surfing. In addition to this, we have learned new hobbies such as pottery and helping others in our community have been a focus. NextYear we are developing our ICT programme and have gained Ministry funding toward developing our practices and processes around integrating technology into our programme. We are undergoing a network upgrade in anticipation of this. Each of our senior students has a school laptop, and each of our junior students has access to their own iPad. We are also looking to

further develop ourTe Reo and Kapa Haka programmes, and are currently investigating the introduction of Mandarin. We are a school on the move and are always ready to take on new pupils. All our students are guided by our school values of Mana, Whanaungatanga, Manaakitanga, and Aroha. We therefore have a strong sense of family, belonging, and achievement, and our students take pride in their responsibility toward others. We are an inclusive and a progressive community that is welcoming toward newcomers.

We combined the two and held it on a Saturday to enable more parents and community to come along and enjoy the festivities with the students/staff from Peria School. The classrooms looked stunning with a brilliant display of aqua jars, cooking, painting, vegetable animals and much much more. There was a great variety of animals ranging from turtles to chooks along with calves, lambs and a horse to name a few.The judging was followed by some hilarious fun with sack races, three legged races and a tug of war. There were a variety of stalls with white elephant, coconut shy, plant, lucky dip and the popular cake stall. Pompallier Primary Principal’s Message

Highlights

Pompallier Catholic School is a special place that offers an outstanding education for all children from year 0 to year 8 in the Mercy tradition. Principal’s Message

Welcome to this year’s highlights from our thriving country school.Tangiteroria Home & School Assn continue to be hugely involved in partnering with our school and actively fundraise to ensure our children have huge opportunities both within and beyond the school. This year we have purchased 20 new Chromebooks (one laptop for every senior student) as well as undertaken a full renovation of our top field/sports grounds. While our children continue to achieve excellent results in reading, writing and mathematics, our teaching and learning programmes are based on a strong foundation of SPIRIT values and tikanga. We encourage children to be kaitiakitanga (guardians/ stewards) of our native environment and surroundings, and spend time in our school bush, building huts, setting traps and learning about conservation. We are super proud of receiving our sixth NRC Environmental Award and this has helped establish and maintain projects such as our orchard and garden planting, honey-producing beehives, and soon-to-be-installed chicken coop. Our annual Agriculture Day is widely supported with many children further rewarded at Central Day due to their passion and commitment in raising animals. As Principal, I feel privileged to work alongside such a dedicated staff, BOT and community.

hen a child comes into hospital for the first time it is a strange and sometimes frightening place. The job of the Hospital Play Specialist is to ‘normalise’ stressful situations by the introduction of familiar activities in the Playroom, or visit the child in their room, providing developmentally appropriate toys for the patient. • As Hospital play specialists we endeavour to provide a nurturing environment aiming to minimise psychological stress and enhance coping for hospitalised children, young people and their families; • We see play and recreation as vital for children and young people and it bridges the gap between home, Early Childhood Centres and schools. This helps them to adjust to a potentially stressful situation; • We offer therapeutic play programmes for infants, children and young people - both individually and in groups; • We work as members of the professional healthcare team to contribute to clinical decision-making and help prepare children and young people for medical and surgical procedures; • We provide an outlet for feelings;

• We enhance family involvement in their child’s care. Kambi is a therapy dog who visits on a weekly basis, and children who may be fearful of dogs overcome that fear and befriend the dog. Scholastic book library is a trolley that we take to children to choose books while they are in hospital. Magic of Reading – a new book is given to each child to take home, who spends a night in hospital. Some patients have to return to hospital many times during their lives, and we provide many activities for them to do. Here Katie is making an outfit for her bear, using our sewing machine.

in all areas of school life. Our focus is on fostering Well-being and Learning for All. We have a great team of teachers and support staff who continually seek out knowledge of learners and of learning ways to improve our own practice.

Mrs Lana Wolfgram

Principal’s Message

2015 has been a busy, exciting year at Totara Grove School. There have been a few changes. The senior management team has two new faces, after the retirement of long-standing principal Mr David Hain, and the promotion of our previous Assistant Principal to a principal’s position. InTermTwo I was delighted and honoured to begin my time as leader of theTotara Grove School Community, and more recently Jody Barrell has been appointed to the role of Assistant Principal. Along with our existing Deputy Principal, Luella Donaldson we make a dynamic, forwardthinking senior leadership team.

There is always something happening atTotara Grove School and there have been many highlights during the year. This includes class camps,Totara Grove’s GotTalent, Book Week, an Art Exhibition, aTri-KidsTriathlon, a Fun Run, numerous top-class performances by the Kapa Haka group, UrurakauTotara and the Pacific Island Dance Group, the Choir Festival, Duffy Assemblies, Athletics Day and many more. The annual Food and Entertainment Festival has become a much-anticipated and popular community event. This year, for the first time ever, we had bad weather. The rain meant the activities and performances needed to be scaled back. The wet weather did little to dampen the spirits of the crowd who braved the conditions and enjoyed the good company, fine entertainment and delicious food. We are fortunate to have such talented students and so many capable, dedicated staff, BOT and parents who put in long, extra hours organising these events.

Our school has continued to grow over the last few years and 2015 saw the completion of another new roll-growth classroom, making a total of fourteen permanent classrooms.

Next year we are looking forward to being part of the Ngatahi Education Trust’s “I Have a Dream” project. We are excited that along withTikipunga High School,Tikipunga Primary School andTe Kura o Otangarei our students will have access to support and mentoring to promote high aspirations for future learning. ”Navigators” will mentor every child and will follow them through primary, secondary and tertiary education to provide consistent academic oversight, advocacy and support. This project fits very well with our school vision to have “A Community of Learners WorkingTogether for Everyone to Achieve”.

These transitions have been very smooth and the school has continued to prosper and flourish. The school motto of “Tupu Tahi – WorkingTogether” is very evident

2015 has been a great year in our vibrant, student-centred learning environment and 2016 promises to be even better!

P

ursuant to sections 146 and 155 of the Education Act 1989, our Gazatte Notice (dated 20 October 2004) states the special character of our kura is: • we commit totally to the guiding princples outlined inTe Aho Matua • the paramount purpose of the kura is the needs of tamariki and their learning • all tamariki enjoy an education which respects their tino rangatiratanga, dignity, rights and individuality • the tamariki will be educated through te reo Maori total immersion as the medium of instruction • our tamariki develop a sensitivity and respect for others • and this education challenges them to reach their full potential in the pursuit of excellence.

About us

We are an area composite kura with a roll of 48 students fromY1-13 with by 8 teachers, 10 – support people and 25 whanau. We are committed to maintaining our – mother tongue,Te Reo Maori, he taonga tuku iho. All teaching, except English, is – delivered in te reo Maori. Te Aho Matua Curriculum from Puna Reo – to Wananga We are extending our kura to include – Puna Reo (early childhood) and Wananga (tertiary studies) to offer a single education pathway that aligns to our philosophyTe Aho Matua. Our curriculum is thematically based drawing on our unique knowledge, history and culture. It is guided by theTe Aho Matua Curriculum, recently launched at Te Kura Kaupapa Maori O Pukemiro in Kaitaia. Our philosophy is to teach to the whole child and to unique and special attributes of each child.

Tertiary Studies

Five members of our kura will graduate in tertiary studies next month fromTe – Wananga o Raukawa.Three will receive a diploma, one a degree and the other a masters. All participants undertook – – studies in Matauranga Maori of which four students are aged 17- 18 years old. Red Shirt Schools Programme

Student involvement inThe Warehouse Red Shirts in Schools programme extends individual career pathways and assists toward securing credits toward NCEA L2.

Kapa Haka

Kapa haka is a fully integrated permanent part of our formal curriculum. Our raukura (past returning students) led wharekura students (secondary level) in the kapa haka nationals in Gisborne in 2014.This was a first following on from a success at regional kapa haka level. We will continue to complete in regional and national kapa haka events. Annual invites on the cruise liner, Silver Discoverer, enables students to perfect their expertise in kapa haka, tourism and hospitality. Tour manager Michael Deaken commented, “They were amazing! The whole ship was buzzing with the thrill of the performance in the following days. The Kalos golf tour organisers said the group was brilliant, and wish to book another visit for early 2016, and possibly a performance at Kauri Cliffs golf resort in November 2015. “Every one of the kura party was a credit to their community and school.Their behaviour and courtesy were immaculate. The energy, enthusiasm, harmonies, precision, and authenticity of the whole performance was awe-inspiring.” Clay Shooting Students achieved status to compete in the North Island, South Island and NZ Secondary School Championship. The discipline and skills taught to achieve that status is a result of the coaching of the members of the Kaeo ClayTarget Shooting Club. The support of the whanau assisted also in successful results. We are very pleased with student achievements this year and we look forward to more in 2016. Chairperson,Terry Smith Tumuaki, Anahera Pomare

Broadwood Area School

T

he whole school participated in the school swimming sports and competition between house groups was fierceTeachers with swimming skills were keen to race against the senior students; this really motivated them to swim faster and a spirit of keen competition resulted. Year 7&8 students and their teachers joined with other waka crew members on Waitangi Day to compete and celebrate. Senior Kapa haka practices began in earnest in January. The group prepared their itinerary in a day, some very talented student writers composed waiata and haka based on their firm opposition to oil drilling in the Far North. Digital technology impacted on the lives of students and whanau, the waiata and poi depicted the journey that the students were on.The group performed confidently and creditably at theTaiTokerau festival held in Opononi at the end of term1.

A senior leader set off for Okinawa early in March; he was selected as the first recipient from our school to be chosen for the Kotahitanga scholarship and spent six weeks at the top of the South Island enjoying a tough, challenging, exciting and fulfilling experience hosted by Outward Bound. The Northland Area Schools Secondary schools Regional tournament was hosted byTe Rangianiwaniwa in Awanui and Kaitaia. Students played in rugby league, netball, volleyball, basketball. Students had a wonderful time and several students were selected to attend the NationalTournament that was hosted in Wanganui. The severe storms that hit the lower North Island compelled the Northland team to remain another day as flooding and snow had blocked the roads. This added to the excitement as many Northerners had never been in snow before. N4L Network for learning committee ensured that the ultrafast broadband was available, making our school network far more reliable and speedy. All students fromYears 1-13 have access to an iPad. Thanks to the wisdom and generosity of whanau most students in the secondary department own their own device. Students and most staff are confident, capable digital users. Senior secondary students travelled to Kaitaia every Friday as part of the warehouse red shirts initiative, these students gained experience in store and were awarded credits for retail skills. The Gateway programme allowed students to travel to MtTongariro; they slept out in freezing conditions in snow caves, learned to ski and snowboard and again used the experience to attain further NCEA credits. HeremiaTaylor-Tuiolima and his dance troupe presented his performance in the school wharehui, this event was covered by Dean Nathan,Te Kaea,TVNZ. Our students were captivated- totally spellbound by the dancers’ performance. Chris Huriwai of Kaikohe, World Unicycle champ, Ngapuhi role model and mentor visited our school, he gave displays on his unicycle, taught students some skills then provided them with a unicycle to practice with. Duffy Books made presentations of books and also had a Duffy role model visit to share their story with the junior cohort.

Junior PlaygroupMuka tangata occurred most Fridays from 9am to 12pm.The preschoolers joined with the year 0-2 students and played together, special activities are organised each week by the coordinator. The URA group trained nearly every weekend and gave exhibitions of their prowess at school and away. Junior athletes competed with determination and drive and entered Far North cross country events with great success. Several students either won or were placed in their sections This year four students had the privilege of being part of the RTuckerThompson sailing crew which sails in the Bay of Islands. Junior students entered the North Hokianga Junior Manukorero contest hosted by Panguru KuraTaumata. Jazmine Murray has won the Junior English section for the past five years. A highlight of the year was the rugby Ling cup competition. Our boys coached superbly by Frankie Proctor won all games played in 2015 and retain the cup for another year. The team hosted and won againstTe Kura Kaupapa Maori o Kaikohe,Taipa Area school .Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances Abundant Life defaulted with rights to first challenge in 2016, The netball girls lost to Kaikohe and won againstTaipa. The school basketball academy has again successfully produced some innately talented players. Coach George Smith honed their skills and encouraged focus and fitness. We have shared and enjoyed school cross country, athletics and winter sports including netball, kiorahi, rugby, volleyball, basketball and swimming. Students have enjoyed outdoor camps based in Hokianga; they have been kayaking, surf swimming and surfing. Craig and Cath Murray have very generously hosted these camps based at their farm in Broadwood. Students have entered and been successful in pig hunting and snapper fishing contests. Local whanau have been fantastic voluntarily offering work experience to students, shell fish gathering, kiln making, horse grooming, farming, fencing and motor mechanics. A local mother has hosted breakfasts throughout the year. Our school marae committee are all members of local whanau who care for the facilities and host manuhiri throughout the year. Major refurbishments are now complete and the school now has a spacious digital technology centre, a sound proof music room and a wooden deck connecting the outdoor gymnasium the Astroturf courts the wharekai and the food technology base.

Huanui College

W

e started the year with the completion of our new block, comprising 2 science laboratories, arts, music, graphics rooms, a library and 2 new classrooms. Netball and Hockey are very successful codes and our Hockey Academy has continued to develop hockey talent at the College with it’s specialist coaching. This will continue in 2016. At regional level we have had great success.TheYear 7/8 Ripper Rugby Team won the Northland Championship. Our Girls Football First XI won the 1st Division Northland title, being undefeated for the season. We had NSSSA Event successes in the Girls and Boys OpenTennis, Mountain Biking, Orienteering,TeamsTriathlon, 1500m Athletics, and La Crosse. Many of our students have been selected for representative teams, and go on to play at national level. This year we have had students chosen for Hockey, Squash, Football, Basketball, Cricket, Rugby, Netball. Outside of school our students are very driven and strive to achieve. They choose to participate in and have excelled at a number of sports, including Karate, Squash, Surfing, Dancing, Gymsport, Equestrian, Cycling, Polocross to name a few. We are looking forward to another successful year in 2106. Huanui students will continue to strive for their personal excellence in academic, sporting and other extra-curricular activities.

I

t has been another year of outstanding achievements by students of Huanui College. Every day students of the College live our motto of “vincit que se vincit” which translates to “He conquers who conquers himself”. To us, this means that anyone can succeed by overcoming challenges which so often lie within ourselves. This philosophy underpins every aspect of the school, and students are encouraged to challenge ourselves daily. Our goal for students is to raise their expectations of what they can achieve both inside and outside the classroom and help them reach their own level of personal excellence. We do this by having a passionate, caring staff that recognises each student as an individual and is invested in developing that individual. As we look forward to 2016 Huanui College will continue to offer choice to Whangarei families who want their children to experience the benefits of an independent education. Huanui College provides outstanding educational, sporting and cultural opportunities for our students and I’m so proud that we continue to set the bar high in Northland in all these areas.

Kia ora e nga whanau total rebuild of our school, starting in 2016. Associate Education Minister Nikki Kaye also announced the launch of a comprehensive financial literacy programme, in conjunction with the Retirement Commission. We particularly appreciated Kaye’s comment to our students that they are right up there with the best schools she visits throughout New Zealand.

Principal’s Message Greetings from Northland College, a school with a long, proud tradition that after a few tough years is now undergoing a spectacular renaissance; once again taking its place as the hub of the Ngapuhi and Mid-North community. This year has seen a spectacular range of successes among our students in the academic, trades, business enterprise, arts and sports arenas. Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme (YES) team Kiana Pou and NathanTarawa took out theTopYoung Scientists prize for their project on protecting waterways at the Far North Science Fair. Hospitality Academy’s Hub Barristas got through to the grand final with their business to supply gourmet hot drinks to staff and students.Year 13 budding entrepreneur William Hohepa became one of only six New Zealand students – and the only Maori and Northlander - selected to take part in the Asia Pacific Final of the Federal Express Junior Achievers InternationalTrade Challenge in Singapore in August. And the good news just kept on coming. Inspiring disabled athleteTe Kopa Kopa starred in a video of his first surf ride at the 2015 Halberg Awards ceremony and became the recipient of the first seven of ten special sports wheelchairs for disabled athletes, donated throughThe Halberg Disability Sports Foundation with funds from the ASBTrust. The school, in conjunction with Sport Northland plans to set up a Disabled Basketball League so that other disabled players in the community are able to participate more fully in sports and community activities. Head Boy Paerangi Kopa won the prestigious Sir George Henare trophy for theTa Himi Henare - bilingual section of the 2015 Nga Manu Korero competition and our First 15 RugbyTeam celebrated a 74-5 victory over Bay of Islands College to win the Mid North 1st XV Rugby Competition trophy home for the first time since 2007. In August we got the Big News we had been hoping for when the Ministry of Education announced a 14 million dollar

This was followed by the formation of our new Board ofTrustees. New Board chair and local businessman Ken Rintoul’s impressive entrepreneurial and business background will prove invaluable with next year’s expansion of our trade academies to include auto mechanics, forestry, bee-keeping and a partnership withTop Energy to train students for careers in the geo-thermal power production industry. As well as our completely new facility in 2016 we are looking forward to the roll-out of Chromebooks throughout the school to bring us into line with the digital education era. One of our commitments to our community is to provide education pathways to high quality employment through the expansion of our on-site trade academies. Our new Military Academy quickly demonstrated the benefits of discipline, focus and teamwork not just in the field but in their classroom achievements and we were proud when they demonstrated their commitment and skills at a moving ANZAC Day commemoration for the 100th anniversary of WW1 on April 25th.They will celebrate their first year’s achievements at a March Out and Open Day for the community on November 25th. Farm manager and agriculture tutor Loretta Smyth hosted Government Ministers Steven Joyce and Bill English to an open day on the school’s 160 hectare working dairy farm and ex-All Black and local businessman Eric Rush spoke to a wrapt audience about the need for planning their futures and creating the kind of goals that can see a poor farm boy from Kaeo go on to become not just a successful player in the World’s greatest Rugby team but a successful local businessman

Now as we meet to close the year with a celebration of our graduates and prize winners, we can be assured that the future, not just for our school but for the whole of Ngapuhi is bright. We pledge to be an active part of that future. We are always mindful that our tamariki are deeply connected to their tupuna, marae and whenua and truly represent the spirit of living in ‘Te Pu o Te Wheke’, the ‘Heart of Ngapuhi’.

The Year That Was – Tauraroa Area School 2015

T

he students and staff ofTauraroa Area School, supported by parents, the Board ofTrustees and community, have enjoyed many successes in 2015. Located 20 minutes southwest of Whangarei, catering for 480 students fromY1 toY13, the school attracts students from a wide catchment area, including Whangarei city. Our vision, “to be the best we can be” focusses on (a) quality teaching and learning, (b) strong learning focused relationships between students, teachers and the wider community, and (c) developing young people to become resilient, self-managing, qualified, learning-focused individuals, equipped for the world beyond the school gates. The year began with news of outstanding 2014 NCEA and Scholarship results, a highlight being 66% of Level 3 candidates gaining prestigious ‘Merit’ or ‘Excellence’ overall endorsements. Our 2015 senior student leadership team headed by Katelyn Gunson, Ryan Stevenson,Taimana Ngakuru-Smith and Corey Hutchinson, ably led a group of committed prefects who served the school energetically throughout the year. 2015 has featured all the usual big school events; from athletics day and swimming sports, to cross-country, triathlon, and country day. Special mention should be made of the ANZAC Day services at Maungakaramea and Maungatapere, where there was a strongTAS presence, and ofTAS Creative at Forum North, which this year, perhaps more than ever, showcased the emerging, amazing and wide-ranging talents of our students. It was great to have a major production this year with students inYears 10 and 11 staging “The Jungle Book”. Next

year we look forward to an even more spectacular production of “Alice in Wonderland”. In sports, our students enjoyed representing the school in a wide variety of codes across all year levels. Our shooting team are the Northland Secondary School champions. Following the New Zealand Area Schools tournament, New Zealand selection was won by Danika Marshall, Cameron Leijen and Isaac Van Praag-Jarrett (volleyball), Jordan Delaney and KohineTaylor (football) andTaimana Ngakuru-Smith (golf). The Primary School atTAS is having an extensive makeover. There are already three new classrooms in operation and three more are currently under construction. This gives the primary a fresh look but more importantly these new rooms are modern and flexible learning spaces, which will suit the learning needs of our students for years to come. Most of ourYear 13 students leave with a strong plan for the future, including heading for the airforce, and academic and employment pathways. Two wonderful examples are Katelyn Gunson (2015 Dux of the school) andTaimana Ngakuru-Smith who have earned prestigious scholarships to study at the University of Otago and in California respectively. We will miss all our departing students and wish them all the best for the future. At the same time we look forward to welcoming new students to our school next year. The staff and students ofTauraroa Area School have had a great year. We look forward to more of the same level of success as we continue our efforts in 2016.
