AVENUES EDUCARE
A
venues EduCare was the first early childhood centre in Whangarei. It is a Community Based centre which is governed by a committee of parents and run by a centre manager. Formally known as Northland Residential Nursery and Crèche it has a great history in the community. We take children from birth to five years and have separate areas for
our infants, toddlers and young children. The staff at Avenues EduCare believe quality relationships are important and values the partnership educators create with parents/whanau and their children. We endeavour to work collaboratively with families to enrich children’s learning and development. We believe positive communication between parents/whanau is important for this partnership to develop and grow and make every effort to provide a welcoming environment for children, parents/whanau, caregivers and visitors. This is enhanced with our online portfolios. We have found that parents contribute a lot more through this and many now add their own stories about holidays or experiences at home. This allows staff to get to know the children and their families better and enhances the learning experiences provided at the centre. Our outside area continues to get developed after the loss of our tree. Children are always engaged and busy in this area with a variety of experiences offered. This year the children entered into the Mitre 10 bug hotel competition and came first winning lots of gardening goodies. Water play, messy play, mud kitchen, gardening, bike and scooter
riding and building are regular daily favourites for most children. Inside children are offered many experiences that challenge their cognitive thinking, construction skills, pre reading, writing and maths skills as well at their fine motor skills. Our Infants and Toddlers are nurtured in a separate area to the Over Two’s but they still spend some time together throughout the day. Older siblings are allowed to visit younger ones and vice versa. They participate in a range of age appropriate activities throughout the day according to their interests at the time. Children also experience outings in the community including excursions to shows at Forum North, regular visit to local rest homes and our under two’s regularly walk to Mander Park and Coronation Reserve. We aim to have a Family Night once a term where children enjoy a shared meal with their friends and family and a mini disco on these nights is always popular. We enjoy dress up days and baking which we do to raise money for charities such as SPCA, Loud shirt day and Daffodil Day. We have recently introduced Play Ball sessions with our 4 year old children which has become very popular. Staff participate in regular professional development, they all like to keep up with the new documents and ideas that are being introduced on a regular basis. We have minimal spaces for under two’s available for 2019. Feel free to come and have a look around and we will happily put you on our waiting list.

BACK 2 NATURE CHILDCARE
B
ack2Nature Childcare is a homebased childcare service where children are welcomed into their educators home, and hearts. By caring for just a small group of no more than four tamariki, strong relationships are built and your child’s unique learning needs can be met. The low numbers allow lots of trips into the local community, as well as regular outings into the beautiful natural spaces of Northland. This year our tamariki have experienced various playgroups, library trips and a tour of Whangarei Fire Station. Our Nature Day highlights included our recent tour to Dragonfly Springs Wetlands Sanctuary, our trip to the Kawiti Glow Worm Caves and of course, just spending time at the beach and in the bush! We celebrate International Mud Day every year, and this year the educators led the fun on the slippery mud slide! A strong focus for Back2Nature in 2018 has been building our confidence in speaking te reo Māori, through educator workshops and also by supporting the tamariki in regular kapa haka sessions. Learning through waiata/song has built the confidence and vocabulary of both the tamariki and the educators, and our kapa haka roopu loved performing to celebrate Matariki, and to entertain at local rest homes. Back2Nature Childcare has expanded recently, meaning we are now able to provide even more educators to our community, all dedicated to offering the very best environment for your child to grow and develop. To see more of what we are all about, please check out the Back2Nature page on Facebook.

he value of Dargaville Playcentre is priceless for your growing tamariki. It offers valuable childhood education through child lead play and embraces whanau learning alongside them from birth to six years of age. This centre is solely run by parents and whanau whom collaborate together to provide a holistic approach to the learning and development of our tamariki. Dargaville Playcentre is open Mondays and Fridays 0930-1230pm. We encourage all families to come along and experience what it has to offer. At Playcentre we harvest a welcoming, supportive and a safe environment for all tamariki and whanau. Furthermore routines on each session include a shared morning tea which helps foster confidence. Over the past year Dargaville Playcentre has had a vast increase in whanau, in which we have worked together to improve the centre to what it is today – a facility that supports the learning of all, with an amazing welcoming vibe and culture. KINGDOM KIDZ
A
s we begin to prepare for our annual Christmas Party at Kingdom Kidz, we reflect back on the year that was. We dressed up as Pirates, Superheroes, Fairytale Characters, and Kitty Cats. We wore green for St Patricks Day, Red for Red Nose Day, and we came dressed in our pyjamas. We invited our whānau to share pancakes on International Pancake Day and for Matariki we made soup for them! In the Spring we had picnics in the fruit orchard, in the Summer we had water slides every day and made our own juice from the fruit trees. In the Autumn we ran through the leaves in the glade of trees and collected them up to create art with. We snuggled up by the fireplace in the Winter and read each other stories. For ANZAC Day we held a memorial service; and to celebrate Matariki we planted a vegetable garden; baked star shortbread to share; roasted marshmallows on the outdoor fire, and sung waiata. We celebrated Diwali with traditional dress, lantern making and delicious Diwali food. To our menagerie of animals we welcomed a very friendly cockatiel named Albus Dumbledore, a lamb called Albie, a pig called Ruby, and four Guinea Pigs, called Barbeque, Vanilla, Jellybean, and Hamburger. We followed the children’s interests which led us from a project on Pets and Animals to a project on Transport. We have learnt many facts about our pets, and how to care for them, and all the while we developed
and extended our learning dispositions; and invited the community to extend our learning further. As we followed the interest in Transport we constructed many vehicles of our own and were visited by a Fire Engine, a rubbish truck, and a logging truck! Another magical year at Kingdom Kidz and every day we take in the beauty of our natural surroundings, and are grateful to be working together with parents, whānau and the community, to raise the next generation of happy, confident, well rounded, and successful Northlanders. At Kingdom Kidz we provide an environment where children learn different ways to be creative and expressive and where children develop and extend their learning dispositions. We are a fun, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and experienced team of educators, who are passionate about providing families with high quality education and care. The early years are the foundation for a person’s future education! We recognise the utmost importance that early childhood has on each child’s academic career henceforth. We are situated in Glenbervie on an expansive and beautiful natural outdoor environment, with an abundance of animals for the children to engage with and plenty of opportunities to utilise our outdoor classroom. With summer approaching we are looking forward to plenty of water play, picking summer fruit, and rolling down the grassy slopes of our orchard.

L
ittle Jemz Home Based Childcare started in February this year, with only one educator in Maungatapere. Over the year we have grown and now have seven amazing educators which include two registered teachers in our team. We presently have educators in Onerahi, Matarau, Parahaki, Kensington and Maungatapere. We have enjoyed getting to know parents, whanau and children through home visits, outings in the community, our weekly playgroups and our kindyRock sessions that are held at the Whangarei Parents Centre on Tuesday mornings, both of which are also open to the public. Little Jemz educators support learning and development, through a focus on music and movement and this is where kindyRock comes in. kindyRock is a
New Zealand based music education program which is recognized and used internationally. (founded by Judi Cranston). Funky, fun songs are written, for children to move to and learn from. The songs are written with specific learning outcomes in mind. kindyRocks Mission: Enhancing Children’s Development by using fun musical activities!! Little Jemz follow the New Zealand Early Childhood curriculum, Te Whāriki. Little Jemz recognizes the uniqueness of each child and the importance of learning through play, and also supporting learning through music and movement. Working together with families, we are committed to providing quality Home Based Childcare, within supportive, loving and safe environments that embrace diversity. We look forward to getting to know more children and families over the next year and providing our tamariki with quality care and education.

MAIRTOWN KINDERGARTEN
M
airtown kindergarten is situated close to the town centre of Whangarei in Kensington. At Mairtown we believe in promoting a nurturing and welcoming learning environment that is also aesthetically pleasing. We are strong advocates for supporting the relevance of play as a tool for learning, of knowing our community and of being immersed and engaged with nature. Play is very exciting for young children. We believe that when play is supported by knowledgeable and inclusive teachers, who recognise and respond to each child’s interests and uniqueness, the rewards in terms of learning are limitless. Through their play children flourish, they learn about descriptive language, social skills, to be creative, solve problems and to develop knowledge about the world around them. We believe in providing a natural and stimulating environment for our children, one which nurtures, respects, supports and challenges children to learn and develop a love of learning. At Mairtown we provide many opportunities for children to learn deeply about the world in which they live; one aspect of this is our Nature Programme. We are proud to now be well into our seventh successful year of getting children back outside, into nature and into their community. In our last visit from the Education Review Office we received the highest recommendation possible of a four year return. Here are some extracts from this report:
30 CELEBRATING
YEARS 1988 – 2018
Teachers at Mairtown…continue to provide high quality programmes and promote strong community links. Children have a sense of belonging, responsibility and well-being. Children’s learning programmes respond to their ideas and foster their engagement in creativity, thinking and expressive language. Teachers work closely with children, inviting conversations that are rich in descriptive language and that support children’s theories about how the world works. At Mairtown kindergarten all our teachers are 100% qualified and are passionate about the care and education of all children. Our environment is welcoming and homely and has a large grassed outdoor area with ample of opportunity for children to explore, climb, be social or find a quiet space to be at one in nature. Our families attend from all over the Whangarei region. Sessions are Monday to Friday, 8.30am – 12.30pm or 8.30am – 2.30pm. Enrolments are always welcome, feel free to pop in and visit. Alternatively you can also read our teaching philosophy, experience some of the learning and community involvement at Mairtown, and read our most recent ERO report by viewing our blog at www.mairtownkindy. blogspot.com or finding us on Facebook.

itoki Playcentre is a rural, parentled ECE service located in the Mangakahia Valley 25 minutes South West of Whangarei. Our session times are Mondays and Thursdays from 9am – 12pm. Playcentre is a unique ECE option where parents play and learn with their tamariki, based on the ideas that parents are a childs first teacher and that important early childhood development is enhanced through play. At Titoki Playcentre our sessions are full of nature discovery, imagination, active play, creativity and social interaction between children from birth up to 6 years of age. Following on from our 3 Year ‘Well Placed’ ERO review in 2017 we have continued to place an emphasis on positive outcomes and experiences for our tamariki based on their interests. There has been a lot of play based learning happening in our carpentry area, sand pit, family play area and in our Playcentre garden. We took the opportunity this year to extend the garden by adding strawberry plants and blueberry bushes. The children dug the compost for the garden into the wheel barrows and wheeling it to the new garden, planting the strawberries and blueberries, watching them grow and, of course, enjoying the fruit! This year a long term project was finally accomplished, the exterior painting of Titoki Playcentre is something that we have been working towards for over 18 months and to see it finished and looking
Setting
W
ith the wonderful support of our kindergarten whanau, and our two local primary schools already part of Enviroschools, we chose to join this exciting programme this year. Enviroschools aims to foster a generation of people who instinctively think and act sustainably. Manaia Kindergarten has always had a strong sustainability kaupapa. Our kindergarten’s philosophy emphasises and values the Mᾱori principals of kaitiakitanga, manaakitanga and whanaungatanga. Leadership and independence is fostered as tamariki take on the role of kaiawhina caring for our vegetable gardens, flowers beds, worm farm, and chickens. Our weekly nature programme down to the Kiteone Road Reserve and beach provides an opportunity for our tamariki to be kaitiaki, learning about, caring for and valuing living creatures, taking away any rubbish found, and ensuring natural habitats are preserved. Our Pou
Whakarewa Tikanga Mᾱori Roimata Mcfarlane noted the importance of kaitiakitanga on a visit last term.’ ‘A range of challenges remain before us in our role as kaitiaki. Through all the mahi you do with the tamariki, it teaches them to become good kaitiaki for our future. ‘ Our winter fire programme delighted the tamariki. Fire symbolises important aspects of our history and culture, and by providing children with fire experiences we are continuing this long tradition. A weekly fire gathering has the potential to enhance a sense of belonging and partnership within a community. Many of our whanau choose to stay and gather around to enjoy our weekly outdoor cooking. As we farewell a number of our tamariki, as they embark on the next part of their learning journey at school, we are confident that they will be leaders advocating for a love and care for their planet. We are excited to continue this journey next year welcoming our new children as we work towards our Bronze Enviroschools award.
stunning fills our whanau with pride. This term we were invited back to Mangakahia Area School’s Twilight Show where our tamariki had the opportunity to showcase their hard work and creativity with stocking grass heads, vaseline saucers and our lambs. We also had the opportunity to perform, for the first time, at the schools Cultural Festival. Our tamariki got up on stage and sung Paki Paki with great enjoyment. Titoki Playcentre are very excited about our upcoming annual fundraiser, our Country Meal at the Mangakahai Sports Complex on Friday December 14th. This year we are fundraising to put more shade in our outdoor playground area. Massive thanks to Northern Benchtops and to our community for continuing to support Titoki Playcentre. Bring on 2019! Whangarei Childcare Centre
T
ucked away in the middle of town is a very special place with perhaps the best outdoor space of any local early childhood centre. The centre was the first purpose built childcare centre in Whangarei back in 1975 and several generations of the same families have passed through its doors and enjoyed its service. As a not for profit community centre all any proceeds are channelled back into the centre for the benefit of the children. We now open at 6.30am and close at 5:15pm making it a great choice for working parents, especially those who start work at 7am. The centre is tucked away behind the Northland Club, it’s private, quiet with no road or foot traffic which makes it very safe. There is plenty of parking with easy access to the centre. 20 Free ECE hours are available to all three and four year olds and there may also be financial subsidies from Work and Income (based on eligibility). We’re licensed for 50 children aged 0 to 5yrs and as a mixed centre our children have the opportunity to interact with all ages (including their siblings) throughout the day.
We have themed days, visitors to the centre, trips out locally and regular visits by the library bus. Our four year olds attend swimming lessons and school transition visits. Outside we have a huge sandpit, grassed area, 2 two playgrounds, a swing area, a mini cycleway for scooters and trikes, a water feature, a big deck with natural shade, covered veranda and large inside indoor open plan space. Healthy food is cooked freshly onsite daily (except Tuesday which is lunchbox day) and the menu is wonderfully varied. There’s always lots of laughter and the children here settle in quickly and enjoy the feeling of being part of an extended whanau. All of our permanent teachers are 100% qualified, there is so much positive and constructive energy in the centre that visitors can’t help but notice when they walk through the door. If you’re looking for quality early childhood education, please pop in anytime and we will be happy to show you around our awesome centre. his was our ‘Production’ year and term 3 was filled with rehearsals and singing and planning and building before the three shows which once again displayed the many and broad talents of our wonderful children. That the shows were ‘sold out’ with over 550 people attending is a testament to the quality of the performances and the hard work of all involved. From our juniors enjoying ‘Adventures Out at Sea’ to the Middle Schools amazing take on the classic Grease through to the Senior Schools Jacob and Sons the performances were a highlight of 2018 across Whangaroa. This was also an ERO year at our school and it was pleasing to once again receive a positive report affirming our work and our school and success in the classroom was evident in a range of ways with special congratulations going to Emma Cook, Shanelle Pilcher, Saraia Allais and Polly Stewart for their New South Wales examination successes. Whilst it was also a special year for Reremoana Ashby-Clark who deservedly received a Sir Peter Blake Leadership Award. Under the tutelage of Whaea Gee and Mrs Sutton our Kapahaka group continued to grow and develop and they once again performed beautifully at the Cultural Festival at Waitaruke and our Famine Fighting team received a bronze award for their efforts to support those struggling across the world. Amongst all of the above our new vegetable gardens were built and planted under the guidance of Mrs Sutherland and with the wonderful help of the kind folk at Bunnings and we began to put the food to good use in our cooking classes with Anna Valentine. We had another successful Market Day, a full on Pet Day, Matariki Celebrations and a whole lot more - a busy year indeed! Thanks to our lovely teachers and staff and to everyone who contributed to Kaeo School this year – we appreciate your support. Best wishes to those who leave us at the end of the year and Meri Kirihimete to all from Kaeo School.

I
t is my pleasure to be the Principal of Kaikohe West School and lead the teaching and learning with fantastic staff and parent/caregivers. Kaikohe West staff and students have had the busiest year in 2018. We have achieved so much in the classroom, our school events, on the sports field and within the many staff meetings to ensure our Tamariki have the tools and skills to achieve success. We have redeveloped our school curriculum with the Graduate profile as the focus. The photos included are examples of
the learning environments that support our school whānaungatanga environment through practicing Manaakitanga, Aroha, mahi Ngatahi, Auahatanga (M.A.N.A). Thank you very much to the many volunteers, parents and sponsors that contribute to our school and ultimately to the experiences our tamariki have in our school. This is invaluable and I hope to grow our supporters next year. 2019 is going to consolidate all our developments from this year with Literacy, Te Reo and Digital curriculum areas the foci. Come in and talk with me, my staff or visit our online classrooms to share what we do. You are always welcome. Mauri ora

THAT WAS K aitaia Primary School
2018 has been an amazing year of growth for everyone here at Kaitaia Primary School. Our school roll has grown to over 400. The Junior School area has been fully refurbished and our tamariki are enjoying their colourful and modern learning environment.
A
ll children have been immersed in the realm of real-life learning. They have explored, discovered, planned, trialled, and experimented with success and sometimes not so much. Our children have learnt a lot both inside and outside of the classroom. Many of our children have had first-time experiences like walking the entire 90 Mile Beach and braving new adventure based activities like Adrenalin Adventure Park (check out our school Facebook Page to see photos and videos). Children have been cooking delicious food, making slime and have learnt about Keeping Ourselves Safe in a variety of places and situations.
We have many happy children for many different reasons. They have learnt, they have laughed and they have loved what has happened at KPS this year. We have learnt and done everything with MANAWA. MANAIA VIEW SCHOOL
M
anaia View School staff and students have enjoyed another successful school year. Students have taken part in a range of activities both in and outside the classroom, celebrating our unique identity, our culture and learning successes. As a school, our priority is to raise student achievement and develop confident, motivated learners. Our teachers are committed to providing innovative programmes and have created a safe and caring learning environment. Digital technology plays a key role in classroom programmes and we offer all classes from years 5 - 8 individual digital devices. Other levels of the school use a range of devices and online to applications to motivate learners. Our classes focus on developing whanaungatanga and a sense of belonging. We have a strong values programme and regularly celebrate our students that model these values around the school. This extends to demonstrating Kaitiakitanga, guardianship and care for our environment. Students are proud of their school, particularly our new gardens, where they have been able to harvest and share our vegetables with their whanau. We are proud of our rich Maori heritage which underpins our school identity. Classroom programmes focus on extending our knowledge of our history and connections to people
and places. This has been supported by trips to Waitangi and Matakana as students learn more about our rich past. Kapa haka is an integral component of our identity and our students and whanau were proud of their strong performance at the Tai Tokerau Festival this year. Our students also enjoy success on the sports field and have access to specialist facilitators who assist classroom teachers and ensure students have a range of sporting opportunities available. Special programmes this year have included rippa rugby, touch, ki o rahi and basketball. Students have all enjoyed the opportunities they have had to participate in interschool sports challenges across a range of codes. Our senior students have enjoyed an even greater range of opportunities as they prepare to transition to high school. This year we were privileged to have had Wheku Design in school working with students. They have produced some high-quality art as well as completing a large mural on one of our school buildings. Te Roopu Eke Ngaru have provided surf lessons which have been a hit with all attending students. We strive for excellence, both academically and in terms of student development. Our students graduate from Manaia View School confident in their identity and their ability to succeed as 21st century learners. Whakatinana te moemoea.

MATAURI BAY SCHOOL Matauri Bay School’s ‘New Sign’
Kia ora whānau
2018 has been a very successful year for Matauri Bay School, Firstly I would like to thank our faithful whānau who always support our tamariki with transport, volunteering your time and resources.
2018 AIMs Games
‘Mā te mahitahi, ka puta ngā hua pai mo te iwi’.... Ānei ngā whakaahua Friday 24th August, we had the privilege of unveiling our long awaited new school sign. We were very blessed with good weather and the presents of our kaiako, students, whānau, kaumatua, kuia and community members who attended this historic event. Thank you to all who contributed their time and resources to this beautiful school sign.
2018 Northland Champions Our Year 5 - 6 Rippa team flew to Wellington on Sunday 8th September to represent Northland at the Rippa Rugby Nationals. Well done to them all and I’m sure they had a fantastic time and experience while in Wellington. Life-time memories.
This Year 7 - 8 Mixed Netball and 7’s Rugby team traveled to Tauranga for the 2018 AIMs Games Tournament. Great experience for all our students to see the level of skills and talent displayed. We were proud of our Mixed Netball and 7s rugby team for entering the fantastic event. Our 7s Rugby team had trained and prepared well for this years tournament, given we were placing 13th overall in 2017. A goal for 2018 was set to make top 12 placing. Three days into the tournament, we made the top 12.Woohoo!!! We achieved our goal. We believed that we could make the top 4 which was going to be very hard but achievable given boys already had sore, tired bodies. Boys were quietly confident but needed to focus on our game plan. Boys made semi finals against Te Puke, which meant making top 4 regardless of the results. We had achieved our goal. Unfortunately Te Puke beat us by scoring in the dying seconds. We were placed 3rd overall after beating Whangarei Int School. We were so proud of our students for their effort, commitment and positive attitude throughout the tournament.

MOEREWA PRIMARY SCHOOL A Healthy School
B
ack in Term 1 we had a vision to create a garden for our community in which our students could learn the benefits of growing healthy food in order to sustain themselves. We quickly realised this garden could also sustain our community. One weekend, staff, tamariki and whanau came together, with the support of Mt Pokaka and Bunnings (Kaikohe, Kerikeri and Whangarei) to break ground and begin the process of creating raised garden beds and planting seedlings. The Oscar tamariki put together a scarecrow to keep away the pesky mynah birds, keen to steal the juicy plants, so it looked like there was a worker in high vis vest present 24/7. At the time of writing, our garden is thriving, full of healthy, green vegetables; broccoli, cabbage, peas, beans, all sorts of lettuce, spinach…the list goes on. Whanau and community members are encouraged to help themselves to whatever they need. Our students will also deliver fresh produce to our local Kaumatua and Kuia to keep them healthy too.
An Active School This year we have branched out in the activities we have offered to our tamariki. All the classes in the school, from the seniors to the teeny tiny juniors, participated in Boxfit classes on site. Whole school Jump Jam sessions start the morning off with a hiss and a roar and get everyone (even the teachers) fired up for learning for the day. Athletics, Ki-o-
rahi, soccer, dancing, Kapahaka, triathlon training, swimming and, more recently, Hip Hop are just some examples of what has been on offer this busy year. Our heated outdoor pool is in the final stages of renovation and we expect our tamariki to be splashing about in it before we head off for the holidays.
A Cultural School For the third year in a row we hosted the Kuku Korero Maori Speech competition. The whole school welcomed manuhiri from Kaikohe to Whangarei. Hosting this event is important to us as a school as it is our contribution to developing and enhancing Te Reo Maori and growing our future Manu Korero speakers. In the second half of this year we agreed to host students from Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Taumarere whilst their brand new classrooms are being built. As they will be with us for most of next year this will continue to strengthen the whakawhanaungatanga between our two schools. Ki nga mate o te tau, haere, haere, haere atu ra. As a school this year we have attended tangi for taonga of our community kua hinga atu ra.
Urupukapuka Island to keep our native wildlife thriving. We explored the wondrous technology on display at MOTAT. We’ve cycled the entire length of Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast cycle track, from Opua to Horeke. Aue! We enjoyed the theatre and magic of ‘Bugsy Malone’ in the beautiful Turner Centre. In the pipeline for next year are plans to explore the icy realms of maunga in the central plateau, along with local maunga and awa.
A Grateful School Finally, we wish to thank Affco Moerewa for their continued support of our school. He mihi aroha ki a koutou!
An Out-and-About School We’ve been everywhere man… We’ve been to Hamilton, Auckland, Kerikeri, Russell, Doubtless Bay, Coopers Beach… and all over our local area too. We learnt how to catch pests on

Message from the Principal
Kia ora koutou katoa. This year has been full on. We have survived without a Deputy Principal all year and are happy to be welcoming Whaea Deborah Nolan who will start with us next year. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in our hard-working team; from our team leaders to classroom teachers, to pouwhirinaki (teacher aides), to support staff, to volunteers. Our people teach, feed, hug, counsel, support, coach, plan amazing trips, teach values such as respect, manaaki and aroha, teach road safety, bike safety, water safety, walking home safely…I think you get the picture. As we approach the end of the year spare a thought for your child’s teacher who is probably sitting up tonight writing your child’s report. Let’s respect them, cherish them. For it was not that long ago it was heard… “Teach? I couldn’t do that job!” He mihi aroha ki a koutou katoa. Jason Tane

very year we send ten senior students to the The National Young Leaders Day. NYLD is an amazing event for schools and is hosted in Term 2. It is a conference that is held in the Manukau Vector Arena that many glorious people (audience and presenters) take part in. At the conference this year the speakers told us about Whakaaro Rangatira which means think like a leader. There were a lot of inspiring speeches from them. At the end of the conference Willam Wairua and Vince Harder came out onto the stage and did a performance for us. Charlie-Jo Foster and Sara Graham Greats and Grands is a day where all the grandparents come together with their grandchildren to Ohaeawai Primary School. Grandparents and their grandkids could play old-fashioned games and eat up a delicious morning tea of cakes and cookies. There was skipping, three legged races, gumboot throwing, egg on a spoon race, a thing with a water bucket and a sack race. And the grandchildren had lots to show. There was their art, blogs and gifts for their grandparents. My friend played a song she wrote on her guitar for all the grandparents. We also did jump jam with our grandparents! I would rate this day a 5/5. Jessica Thomas Raranga Matahiko This year we had the chance to go to Waitangi museum. We got to use robots,VR, Green screen, 3D printing and other cool stuff. We learnt about the Battle of Ohaeawai and everything that happened. We got to look at the weapons they used and all of the

The garden group weed and replant seedlings while the other group cooks in the kitchen using produce grown in the garden. Then everyone sits down to eat the yummy dishes they have created . SKi Trip This year our Year 5 and 6 students went on our bi-annual ski trip to Mount Ruapehu. We had a great time skiing, swimming, fishing, rockwall climbing and eating. We were all very excited, as for most of us it was our first time skiing. Other events we ran at our school included: Chromebook roll out day for our Year 4’s, Batons Up, discos, Fun Run, Kaikohe and districts Cross Country, Movie Night, and Pet Day.

R AURIMU AVENUE SCHOOL A Year for C.A.R.E
P
utting wellbeing at the forefront to ensure learning occurs has been a Kaupapa of C.A.R.E. for all involved at Raurimu Ave School. After consultation with our community and whanau in 2017, the year began with the introduction of our new school values. Being a CREATIVE LEARNER involves problem solving, inquiry, creating, reflecting, evaluating and thinking outside of the box. Rather than being consumers of knowledge, we strive for our students to be the future creators of solutions that they may be confronted or deal with at all levels of society. Our school staff, students and families are on a mission to make sure we are ALWAYS KIND. This takes a group effort to teach and reteach ourselves and others around us that we choose to be kind in what we say, hear and do. We have chosen to extend Respect for ourselves further to others and also the environment. We help each other to understand that respect for others and the environment can only happen as an extension of our own self-respect. Our final C.A.R.E value wraps all of the other 3 values into an ethos of inclusion and the celebration of individual identity. At Raurimu Ave School we ensure that every child is valued for who they are. It is then the aim of our teachers and staff to nurture and grow the individual from

their inherent potential. Securing an “It takes a village” attitude happens by making sure that everyone matters. C.A.R.E lessons are taught in every class and students are awarded C.A.R.E cards for demonstrating the values, in the classroom and playground. They put their cards into the C.A.R.E jars and go into the draw at every assembly. If you talk to any of our students they can tell you about the C.A.R.E Values and how we demonstrate each of them. To support our Kaupapa of C.A.R.E we introduced the Zones of Regulation. This was done across the school and is used as a curriculum geared toward helping students gain skills in consciously regulating their actions. As a result it leads to increased control and problem solving abilities. Raurimu Ave School joined a cluster of three other local schools who also did the same. As a group of schools we all worked to improve student engagement and their ability to express and regulate their emotions during the school day. The results were successful and we were acknowledged at the Northland 2018 Health and Social Innovation Awards in November. Raurimu Ave School took home the Best Innovation for Social Outcomes Award, with Whau Valley Primary, Totara Grove Primary and Ruakaka Primary.

TOTAR A NORTH SCHOOL
A
small rural school that was established in 1852 and has served many generations of local families and those from the wider Whangaroa district. We are located on the beautiful Whangaroa Harbour hillside. Totara North School is special as we have small classes and we have a friendly community feeling that creates a whanau like environment where children form caring relationships enabling them to give everything a go. We are an Enviroschool and we are continuing will build on what we have already done and continue to practice sustainable learning opportunities. Our School gardens have once again been replanted with vegetables so we use to make healthy lunches or distribute out to our families. Much of our waste is composted, used in the worm farm or dug straight into our gardens. Our environmental education is closely linked to our culturally responsive practices and place based learning. Working with our local community has been a focus this year. We have started to maintain and monitor a trapline on the boundary of our school as part of the Community Pest Control Project. Once again we had a Bonfire night with the Totara North Hall Committee. Not only did the children made their own guys, there also was a cake decoration competition for them and the adults. The old school games, shoe sled, egg and spoon, sack races and gumboot throwing were a hit once again. This year our School Camp was a trip down to Auckland to visit the Zoo, looking at New Zealand Reptiles through the lens of the Maori World and visit the Tunnels at North Head. We were fortunate to stay at Kauri Park School, a large school in Birkdale, on the North Shore. A major event this year was our Production - Eddie the Penguin Saves the World. This was an Environmental Music about how a group of penguins were able to change the ways of the humans to maintain a sustainable world. The children performed two shows - a Matinee for the grandparents and invited guests plus an evening show for the parents. We are a KIwi Can School and our Kiwi Can Leaders are here every week teaching values around social
relationships, behaviour and learning, We regularly engage with expert provides to deliver engaging education programmes and activities that teach children about making healthy lifestyle choices and therefore Totara North School is involved with the Energise Programme (Sport Northland), Watersafe Programme and other coaches from different sport codes. A big thank you must go out to our numerous volunteers and sponsors that support our annual ‘King of the Coast’ fishing competition and our major fund raiser. Taur aroa Area School
T
he students and staff of Tauraroa Area School, supported by parents, the Board of Trustees and community, have enjoyed many successes in 2018. Located 20 minutes southwest of Whangarei, catering for 550 students from Y1 to Y13, the school attracts students from a wide catchment area, including Whangarei city. Our vision, “to be the best we can be” focusses on (a) quality teaching and learning, (b) strong learning focused relationships between students, teachers and the wider community, and (c) developing young people to become resilient, self-managing, qualified, learningfocused individuals, equipped for the world beyond the school gates. Cornerstone Values are an important aspect of the way we are at TAS. This year we have focused on Respect, Duty, Kindness and Honesty. These values contribute strongly to the sense of ‘family’ or ‘whanaungatanga’ at school. The Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award Scheme has seen 46 students work towards gaining Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, putting Cornerstone Values in practice through community service, learning a skill and undertaking challenging expeditions 2018 has featured all the usual big school events; from athletics day and swimming sports, to cross-country, polar bear swim and country day. The Matariki/ Wearable Arts evening has also become a regular event where we showcase the creativity of our staff and students. TAS Creative On Stage ‘wowed’ a large audience at the Capitaine Bougainville Theatre in September, with a wide range of outstanding music, dance and kapa haka. We have welcomed several visiting groups from schools in Japan this year, in addition to a number of long-stay overseas students. Each of these contributed to the broadening of our perspective on the world beyond Northland and New Zealand. They have helped our students develop a richer understanding of culture and difference,
and are extremely valuable reciprocal learning experiences. Students have excelled in academic achievements, along with notable successes in drama, music and sport this year. Students at Tauraroa Area School enjoy the benefits of a beautiful rural setting along with the very best learning facilities technology and - most importantly - caring, professional teachers. Students of all backgrounds, interests and abilities are challenged and supported to be The Best They Can Be. The staff and students of Tauraroa Area School have had a great year. We look forward to more of the same level of success as we look forward to 2019.

K amo High School
2019 was a super year for Kamo High School with outstanding achievements accomplished by our students, too many to include here in this example of the amazing things our students are doing. Globe Theatre, London – Head Prefect, Maea Shepherd, is one of 24 students nationally who will travel to the UK next year to spend three weeks taking part in a series of workshops and tours, culminating in performing on stage at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre on the banks of the Thames. Maea was also recently announced as the winner of the Kate Edgar Trust Suffrage125 competition, for which she won a $500 cash prize with her musical video.
Grease - Term 2 ended on a high note with the school production of ‘Grease’. Directed by Mrs Tracey Lawson, assisted by the staff team of Ms Tammy Thorley (choreography), Mr Jim Wallace (musical direction), and Mrs Peggy Shepherd (wardrobe and ‘go to mum’), the cast included 41 students in total, including 5 sound and lighting techs, band members and backstage crew, who performed for a very successful, three night, full-house, billing.
Shave for a Cure - In March, students Maea Alexander-Crawford. Caleb Lenssen and Lachlan Henderson organised the ‘Save for a Cure’ fundraiser at school. Our efforts topped the country, raising over $12,000 for this worthy cause.

Nga Manu Korero - In June this year, Kamo High School students participated in the Te Tai Tokerau Nga Manu Korero Speech Competition held in Opononi. Wynyard Peeni, Yr 13 Rangatira Prefect, placed 1st with his speech on ‘Gender Discrimination’. He was awarded the Korimako Trophy in the senior English section, which qualified him to travel in September to the Nga Manu Korero Nationals in Gisborne, where he gained him 4th place. Other success at the Regional Nga Manu Korero event saw Year 11 student, Dymoneec Mangu-Thompson, take 5th place for a 12 minute speech - six minutes in Te Reo and six minutes in English, and Jazz Barclay, a Year 9 student, who came 2nd with her six minute speech (usually only Year 10 students are even placed in this junior event). This is an amazing result.

orthland College has been recalibrating and focusing on building our relationships with whānau, hapū, iwi and the wider community as we look to build upon the strong foundations of our past and the exciting direction of our future. Term I saw a group of our founding students arrive to bless the hanging of photographs from the old school building into our Modern Learning Environment. In Term IV we were also very humbled to receive this beautiful taonga ‘Ko wai koe?’ gifted to Northland College (on behalf of Te Tai Tokerau Arts Collective and Te Rūnanga-āIwi o Ngāpuhi) by two amazing artists; Charles Williams and Mike Tupaea.
These have included; • Te Toi Rangi Bi-lingual Programme - Year 9 • Te Pū o Te Wheke & Te Ara Whānui Kapa Haka • Te Reo Māori as a core subject for Year 9-10 • Te Reo Māori as an optional subject for Year 11-13 • Ngā Manu Kōrero • Te Tai Tokerau Festival • Taiamai Tours Excursion Waka – Kaiako and Tauira Ākonga Team Building • Mahi Whakairo • Haerenga - to local and national sites of significance • Mau Rākau
Ko wai ahau?
As a community we are well aware of the proud history that Northland College has and therefore, we targeted a number of team sports that would ensure we would test ourselves against the best. In March, we travelled to Palmerston North to compete in the Sir Gordon Tietjens Invitational 7’s Rugby Tournament. Over the two days of the tournament we got to play against some of the very best rugby playing schools in the country. We will once again be returning in the New Year to improve on our semi-final placing. Our Netball and Volleyball teams competed consistently well throughout the season, growing the interest and playing numbers in both codes. A highlight for our coaching staff was having the opportunity to work with Peter Finch who spent many years conditioning professional rugby players and working with
As we moved from the old singular cell classrooms to our open Modern Learning Environment (MLE), we have had to learn to shift our thinking in the way we deliver our teaching and learning. It is now more reflective of the types of wānanga that we know engage and inspire our students to be fully involved in their learning journey. In order to achieve our Mission Statement here at Northland College; ‘To Enable Every Student to Succeed’ we have had to examine not only how we deliver, but why we select the curriculum content we cover. We believe that our local curriculum must reflect who our students are as Ngāpuhi and how this can help them to be our genuine Māori leaders of tomorrow.

Red Bull extreme athletes. This accelerated our decision to get a fully functional cross fit gym operating in Term IV.
Trades Academy & Services We continue to grow and excel with our Trades Academies in Hospitality and Agriculture using our 500ha farm which milks 340 cows. We have four students graduating to undertake a Certificate in Agriculture at Telford in the South Island. (Mackenzie Narbey-Nimeti, Redginald Reihana, Taniela Mafua and Ben Komene). Our Hospitality students will be catering for over 600 manuhiri at the Blues Vs Chiefs in early February. This will give them a real taste of a ‘Master Chief’ experience. We are also excited to announce that we have been approved to deliver Carpentry as part of Trades Academy in 2019. The Services Academy continue to provide a real pathway into the Police, Army, Navy and Airforce while maintaining an active presence at annual community and memorial events.

A final reflection from our Head Boy & Head Girl 2018
“The students at Northland College this year have applied themselves to a respectable degree. We may not have come around with all the wins, but we definitely gave our opponents a run for it. This year has been a year to remember, with all the changes possible in a school occurring in just one year! I am proud of how we adapted to accommodate these positive additions to Northland College”. – Clay McQueen “This year has been challenging for everyone. I have seen a lot of changes over the last five years that I have spent at Northland College. I have come to understand many
things including responsibility, hard work, commitment and confidence. When I reflect on my five years here, I can’t say it has all been easy. Head Girl has been a privilege, however, it has also been a lot of hard work”. – Nakita Stirling Stirling. We have an experienced and talented teaching team and behind every student success there is always a special staff member who has performed above and beyond the call of duty. (ABCD). We are currently taking New Enrolments for 2019. If you would like a personal tour through the school or would like to discuss what we have to offer at Northland College, please contact me to arrange a suitable time: johnk@northlandcollege.school.nz Finally, I would like to wish all whānau and friends of our school safe travels over the summer, and like you, we look forward to the challenges, opportunities and celebrations next year. TIKI DOMINATE AT REGIONALS The Junior Boy and Girls volleyball teams confirmed their dominance against other Whangarei schools when they reigned supreme once again at the Regional Finals held at the ASB stadium on Tuesday 20 November. Both teams proved too strong and will go away feeling positive as they head off to Nationals next week in Manukau, Auckland.

LIVE AND LEARN R AT WHANGAREI BOYS’ HIGH HI SCHOOL T HOUSE / AN EDUCATION CHOICE C CARRUTH Whangarei Boys’ High School is taking new enrolments for 2019 at its boarding hostel, Carruth House. If you are asking yourself ‘what is best for my son’, and are looking for a structured living environment where he can focus on academic, sporting and co-curricular success, then Carruth House could be a great choice. In addition to the wide range of academic options, boys are able to pursue any sporting, cultural and musical interests while living here. The school offers over 35 different sports codes, from Adventure Racing to Waka Ama, and many performing arts opportunities. The hostel has around 20 spaces for 2019, at all year levels. Whangarei High School opened in 1881 but it wasn’t until 1913 that it was determined a
boarding hostel would be required to cater for students from throughout Northland. A building was erected on the then School site in Lupton Avenue and opened to boarders for the princely fee of $70 per year. By 1920 the Whangarei High School was getting larger and it was determined that land should be purchased to build a separate school to allow the separation of boys and girls. The current site of Whangarei Boys’ High School was opened in 1925 and the number of boys in the Hostel on Lupton Avenue had risen to over 90. It was decided that it was appropriate to build a separate facility to house the boys and the now current site of Carruth House in Kent Road opened in 1927. It was named Carruth House after the then Chairman of the Board, Mr W A Carruth.
Some might say that Carruth House is the back-bone of Whangarei Boys’ High School, certainly all former boarders would do so. Whangarei Boys’ High School prides itself on offering a wide and varied curriculum to their boys, from the strongly academic to the vocationally focused. Along with regular classes the school also offers a Gifted and Talented Education programme, Supported Learning and Gateway work placements. There is no doubt that it is an asset to education in Northland where boys from all over can receive the type of education that they may not be able to get in some of the outlying areas of the region. There is no doubt that Carruth House provides students with a positive start in life.
For more information and a tour of Carruth House, call Ian Rowe on (09) 430 4179 or email carruth@wbhs.school.nz

2018 – Another outstanding and inspiring year in the proud history of Whangarei Boys’ High School
O
ur academic results in 2017 were our best ever, with pass rates exceeding National Rates in all areas. The school was a dominant force in Science Fair this year with some stunning entries picking up 9 prizes, including Best Year 9 Technology Award. This continues to underline WBHS as one of the top Science schools in the north. The Mathematical Modelling Team came 3rd in the New Zealand section of the International Mathematical Modelling Challenge. The school prides itself as the top sporting school in Northland and 2018 was no exception to this tradition. Some sporting highlights were, the Adventure Racing Team coming 2nd in the Torpedo7 Hillary Challenge and winning the National Rogaine Championship. Ollie Hawker led the 1st XI Hockey Team to 5th Place in the top-ranked Rankin Cup Division, and along with Luke Trigg and William Stainton was selected to the NZ U18 Development

Quin McClean was a finalist in the Northern Region Chamber Music Competition and gained a Bronze Award; Isaiah Kaiawe was a winner in the same competition. Nathan Calver was the NZ U18 Rock’n’Roll Dance Champion. The strength of our other cultural programmes continues to provide for and encourage boys to shine in fields other than the sporting arena. The Drama Department continues to produce high calibre shows in the Senior School. The production INK (the rise of Rupert Murdoch) was an outstanding performance. Our students continue to achieve some stunning results in the academic field. Shi-on Ko was a finalist in the National Spelling Bee Championship. A number of students have been awarded prestigious
university scholarships for 2019. The leadership programme at WBHS continues to provide opportunities for our boys that are unparalleled in Northland. Every boy has a chance to develop their leadership skills and become a school prefect. In 2019, A Junior Leadership Programme will sit alongside that of the Senior School. 2018 has been another great year in the long history of Northland’s oldest secondary school – business as usual for us and the prospect of continuing to develop boys into fine young men in 2019 and beyond is something we look forward to with much excitement. If you are interested in enrolling your son at WBHS for 2019 as a day boy please contact Maeve Waggott on 430 4170 ext 742 or m.waggott@wbhs.school.nz for an enrolment pack and information.
