elcome to our second edition of Vision Northland. I hope you enjoy reading about our local businesses and their vision enabling their business to be sustainable into the future. Many of these businesses have been operating in Northland for many years, and sometimes it is difďŹ cult to get them to tell their story. Kathy Opai and Kerin Schultz played a big part in putting this publication together with Kathy collating the stories and Kerin visualising their stories, services and products. Each year these businesses strategize in one or more of the following ways; grow or change
direction, move premises, restructure to operate in our ever-changing world, or even overcome hurdles within their businesses through climatic extremes and conditions. We wish to thank the advertisers and contributors for allowing us to share their stories with our readers. If you wish to tell us your Vision for our 2016 publication, then please contact us at features@northernadvocate.co.nz or jan.hewitt@northernadvocate.co.nz Jan Hewitt Features/Special Projects Manager The Northern Advocate

VISION NORTHLAND
The Whangarei District Council Focuses on their Weekend and Night Time Strategy
E
nsuring Whangarei’s inner city offers cafes, restaurants, bars, entertainment places, arts, culture and music venues and street markets, sounds like a nice idea, but increasingly this is being seen as vital to the future of the District.
It includes things like creating more pedestrian zones where a bustle of people can develop after work and on weekends, relaxing in attractive street spaces and unique connecting laneways; enjoying alfresco dining and seating around the inner city, visiting evening and weekend markets and events.
To have a secure economic future, our District must successfully attract and retain young people, especially the knowledgebased, young, talented workforce and other professionals needed to provide the services that any growing and thriving District needs.
While these exist here, often they are isolated from each other in time and space – so one of the key aims of the strategy is to connect them together, joining up late night shopping areas, entertainment at Forum North, the Library, the Riverbank, and restaurants and bars, and transport hubs, encouraging inner city residential life, and improving safety in the inner city.
Key to this is for the City and District to be the kind of place that has the kinds of things going on that young people can enjoy and can participate in. For several years Whangarei District Council has been working behind the scenes on a Weekend and Night Time Economy Strategy. The idea behind the strategy is for Council to ensure public infrastructure and systems work in ways that enable businesses and communities to develop a dynamic, diverse and multi-purpose weekend and night time economy in which public culture and commercial culture intersect.
To create this, the aim is to make most streets within the inner city pedestrian friendly zones, to encourage walking and cycling and enable more land to be available for green or grey social space. Some of the ideas included in the strategy Weekend and Night Time Economy Strategy (available online at www.wdc.govt.nz) include: • A late shopping night to allow workers in the inner city to have an opportunity to shop before having a meal or seeing a show.
• Night markets directly tied to the late night shopping, incorporating other festivals such as open air cinemas with a focus on food trucks/stalls congregating - the perfect opportunity to give families a free movie experience while having dinner together. • Outdoor concerts and theatre, firework displays and night time street performances, clever lighting to highlight attractive or historical features and architectural details, deter anti-social behaviour, and increase safety. • Alfresco dining to help to bring life to the streets and open spaces in the inner city and improve the weekend and night time economy. • Busking and other street entertainment to create vibrancy and add colour to the street scene for visitors and local people. Live music, dance, and theatre are encouraged for the wider cultural benefit of the community and enhance the weekend and night time economy. • A weekend to celebrate the cultural heritage, goods and ethnic food • Parades such as the dawn parade for Anzac Day, or events like Matariki, Christmas or Easter.
powered by youth, for youth
• An opportunity for local playwrights, local musicians and buskers to direct and showcase their talent with various performances occurring inside buildings and outside in public open spaces. If you have lots of ideas we would like to hear from you. You can view a full copy of the Weekend andNight Time Economy Strategy at www.wdc.govt.nz.
The Northern Advocate and Flava have joined forces and are now one arm of NZME. We have in the past held a very successful event, and printed publications for our youth and plan to do it again 2015. VISION NORTHLAND
Experience the Waitangi Treaty Grounds
T
he best way to experience the Waitangi Treaty Grounds is to immerse yourself in the activities on offer, starting with a Guided Tour. The guide meets you at the entrance to the Visitor Centre where you begin your journey. New Interpretive panels through the centre and stories woven by the guide paint an historic picture, before you head outside into a lush bush setting. An idyllic ocean vista provides the backdrop for the impressive sight of the world’s largest ceremonial war canoe. The story of the journey of Maori ancestors to New Zealand is revealed before you continue along a gently sloping track. The sight that is presented to you at the top of the track is one of magnificent beauty. To your right, beyond the flagstaff which signals the very spot the Treaty was signed, lie panoramic views of the Bay of Islands. To your left the colonial Treaty House sits among historic gardens and is comfortably flanked by the impressive carved meeting house. Your Guided Tour ends here with breath taking views and a new appreciation for New Zealand’s story. The Cultural Performance is a must to follow on from your Guided Tour. All visitors gather outside the majestic carved meeting house where a challenge ensues - traditionally performed to determine whether visitors are coming in peace or otherwise. Arriving in peace, you are welcomed within the embrace of the
meeting house. A high-energy delivery including poi twirling, stick throwing, heavenly harmonies and a traditional haka will leave you spellbound. Filing out of the meeting house with smiles still plastered on faces young and old, one of the day’s highlights is meeting the performers and taking photos with them. Long summer evenings in the Bay of Islands lend themselves perfectly to a Hangi and Concert. Your night begins at the Whare Waka Café within the Treaty Grounds, providing a casually charming setting to mix and mingle with a drink. You then gather around the modern earth oven (hangi) to witness the unveiling of food. Leaving the Hangi chefs to complete meal preparations, you head to your Cultural Performance in the carved meeting house, before returning to the hangi buffet. Topping the evening off with a substantial meal of salads, vegetables, meats, stuffing, traditional breads and steamed pudding for desert, you will leave satisfied after your fun-filled taste (figuratively and quite literally), of the Maori culture. Whether you choose to see the grounds your way or join an organised activity, it is hard to put into words the feeling of historic importance, kinship, identity, culture, beauty and pride that permeates the expansive grounds at Waitangi.

Korean-New Zealand artists continue to shape New Zealand’s recent art history exploring the inbetween worlds of crossing cultures in an increasing international landscape of New Zealand’s art practice. The artists in the exhibition have each made their own journey moving to New Zealand in the 1990s and are all graduates from Elam School of Fine Arts, reflecting the diversity of New Zealand contemporary artists and the complex ambiguity of nationality or cultural definitions. The first of its kind in Northland, the exhibition takes audiences on an uncharted journey through old landscapes remembered, new worlds discovered and dreamscapes imagined. Included in the exhibition is a unique commissioned mural by Hye Rim Lee reinterpreting her recent work Black Rose Queen, featuring her digitally animated character TOKI.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING
T
he Ika story is about several sets of aspirations developing into an initiative with a strong sense of common purpose for Northland.
OUR ASPIRATIONS The Main Contributors Local Maori leaders and key people from Ngatiwai, Ngapuhi, Ngati Hine and Ngati Whatua, who desire to develop and help fulfil their iwi and hapu aspirations. Hihiaua Cultural Centre Trust, the mission of which is to represent and develop Te Taitokerau (Northland) whanau, hapu and iwi interests, in regard to Matauranga Maori. Our common purpose is to develop a distinctively Maori venture with a foundation that embraces the principles and practices of the Declaration of Independance and the Treaty of Waitangi. The aim is to embed Kaitiakitanga, and Matauranga Maori into education programme delivery.
IKA KAUPAPA
OUR INSPIRATIONS Acknowledgements Carmen Hetaraka (our Stakeholder Relationship Manager) was instrumental in the initial consultation with key people from Ngatiwai, Ngapuhi, Ngati Hine and Ngati Whatua at a whanau, hapu and iwi level. Te Warihi Hetaraka a tohunga whakairo from the Hihiaua Cultural Centre Trust. We met with the trust representatives, including the chairman and Te Warihi Hetaraka to understand their kaupapa and to explain to them our aspirations and how we believed we could align to their kaupapa. We then asked Te Warihi to give us an identity and a challenge that best represents how we would both work together. Te Warihi Hetaraka discussed his thoughts with Tokowhati Martin and Carmen Hetaraka, who then presented their decisions to us on the 1st of November 2013. This included our name, a suitable challenge in the form of a whakatauki or proverb and the names that would support our programmes.
Our kaupapa has been given to us in the form of a whakatauki, which comes from the writings of Morere Piripi “Ka tu ki uta, Ka noho ki te moana” This refers to the Ngatiwai people who are the children of the sea. “When the Molly Hawk cries out at sea, Ngatiwai tribe is on the move at sea.

Waste Management so much more than Skips and Bins
W
e care passionately about keeping our communities, our people and our environment clean and above all, safe. But the challenge of managing our nation’s waste is not as simple as supplying skips and bins for commercial and household collections or weekend clean ups. Effective waste disposal requires our sophisticated engineering and technical expertise to manage the waste in an environmentally responsible way.
This means we’re already thinking 50 or more years in to the future, planning for the infrastructure we all need, to live the way we want to. Enjoy life, and don’t worry, we are taking care of the waste, and our environment.
Waste to Resources
Taking care of this beautiful country of ours drives Waste Management’s intense focus on hi-tech, sustainable waste management practices. We’re turning waste back into valuable resources through advanced recovery, recycling and reuse and at the same time reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting the environment.
We’re heavily focused on recycling, waste treatment and other modern safe and sustainable waste management services; 30% of what we collect is recycled and reused. We use sustainable landfill technology to store the remaining residual waste after we’ve exhausted all opportunities to recycle and reuse. You won’t see seagulls at our modern landfill sites – what you will see is electricity generation that powers homes.
We Invest for Our Future Modern waste management is capital intensive. We will continue to invest heavily in futuresustainable technology, increasing our ability to recycle more waste, better manage our collection and landfill facilities, and more effectively manage the resources we take care of.
Our Future Demands the Best Sustainable Practices. We Deliver
waste we collect each year, and produce 100,000 cubic metres of garden compost from the green waste we collect through our subsidiary company Living Earth. We encourage our customers to separate their waste into different streams for recycling to ensure the maximum recovery of materials such as aluminium, steel, metals, biosolids, bricks, paper and cardboard, plastics, batteries, oil, coolants, and solvents.
And where waste can’t be directly recycled, our clean-tech landfill operation uses landfill gas to generate electricity, whilst organic decomposition breaks down other components and renders them inert. We’ll continue to innovate and develop our technology and expertise to put more waste to use, so we can all continue to enjoy our environment.
Recycling the Waste Management Way As our population grows, we consume more of our limited precious natural resources and generate more waste. Recycling saves landfill space, and conserves those natural resources, so the more we can recycle or reuse, the better. Our plants all over the country recycle approximately 200,000 tonnes of the

Wals Holes
W
al’s Holes is a long established and well respected company in the drilling, excavating and site preparation industry. It is owned by Keith Whalley(Wal) who started the business in 1984 with a truck mounted drill rig which was predominantly used for drilling Offal holes for farmers. In 1988 the first digger was purchased to service the Builder, Drainlayer, Farmer and homeowner. This digger was the first in Northland to have drilling and pole driving attachments. Wal’s Holes carry out residential and commercial work on easy or steep sites, big jobs or small. A key part of Wal’s Holes success has been the personal service offered by Keith. You can trust that he will use his years of experience to get your job done as cost effectively and as quickly as possible. Wal’s Holes cover all aspects of earth moving and transport cartage work. They have a good range of equipment including:
Diggers We have 4 diggers, 1.8 ton Rubber tracks, 5.5, 7.5, 8.4 ton Steel tracks, all with Dozer blades and offset booms to allow digging close to walls and other objects. Our diggers all come equiped with a “Tilting Quick Hitch” which allows quick changing of buckets and attachments to save time and money. All buckets and attachments can be tilted up to 70% to enable digger operation in extremely awkward places and angles. Each digger
is delivered to site on our own Tiptrucks, complete with a range of buckets 230mm to 1.7m wide. They have a Auger drive with hole boring augers up to 1m diameter. Each digger can share a plate compacitor Rock and Concrete breaker, and pile drivers and tree mulcher. All but the small digger have steel tracks. This doesn’t mean it is heavy and dangerous. A 7.5 ton diggers ground pressure is only 33KPA (less than your car). Boards can be laid on concrete to stop the tracks scratching or we supply rubber mats. Other diggers can be hired in when needed - for example, a baby digger for a narrow area or under a house, or a large 15-20 ton for the heavy work. All operated by our experienced operators.

INFRASTRUCTURE
Building Communities for 80 years
F
ulton Hogan has more than 80 years’ experience in the transport, water, energy, mining and land development infrastructure sector in New Zealand, Australia and the South Pacific. We create communities from the ground up, starting with our own network of quarries, complemented by our asphalt, emulsion and precast plants.
The names you see on our trucks, our hard hats and our high-vis vests are more than just a brand. They’re the names of our founders, Jules Fulton and Bob Hogan, who teamed up as partners in 1933 to start a contracting business and create a future for their families. Those families, together with employees, still hold a major stake in our public, non-listed company. We pride ourselves on being a family company – one which cares about communities and the people in them, especially our customers, suppliers and our 5500+ people. Safety always comes first. We challenge and train our people to look after themselves and their team mates. Locally, Fulton Hogan’s presence in Northland began in 1989, with the purchase of Laurent Construction Co Ltd
and Northland Road Builders Ltd, two Kaitaia based contracting companies that were established in the 1950’s. Shortly after adopting the lagoon blue of Fulton Hogan a base was setup in Hewlett Street Whangarei, which is now the Northland regional office. Today Fulton Hogan undertakes a wide range of infrastructure activities across Northland. We have maintenance contracts looking after roading networks for the Far North and Whangarei District Councils & the New Zealand Transport Agency. We cover jobs of all sizes across multiple disciplines including drainage, water reticulation, traffic management for events, civil construction, chip sealing and asphalt laying.
Construction of the SH1 deviation around the Maromaku slip. Fulton Hogan and key subcontractors worked tirelessly around the clock for 6 days to create a diversion road around a slip following the severe storms in July 2014.
Jules Fulton and Bob Hogan set out to create a business based on honesty, trust, respect, safety and teamwork. It worked for them and still works for us today. Fulton Hogan has earned a reputation for always doing what we say. Our customers tell us it’s our approach and culture which set us apart. We’re proud of that and we apply that approach every time we help build a stronger community.” If we can help you on your next project please let us know.
SH1 & SH14 Intersection upgrade completed by Fulton Hogan and winner of NZTA’s National Going the Extra Mile (GEM) award for keeping customers moving throughout the construction process.

FROM NORTHLAND, FOR NORTHLAND! Pacific Motor Group started life as a Ford dealership in the very early1900’s, operating out of a blacksmith and engineering store right here in Whangarei. After a few moves and a couple of name changes, the existing business became well-known as Pacific Ford – but the opportunity to expand their sales base led to one final name change. In 1999, what had been known as Pacific Ford took on the Mazda franchise; prompting the creation of a new identity to reflect their extended sales base: Pacific Motor Group. This expansion spelled out an exciting new era for the long-standing company, with the ability to sell and service not only the well-known and highly-regarded Ford and Mazda brands, but a range of other quality makes too. The service side of Pacific Motor Group also came into focus, with the company recognising a need for the use of specialist diagnostic equipment and highly-trained technicians across a range of global makes and models. For over 100 years, Pacific Motor Group’s commitment to the Northland community has remained as strong as the day the company was founded: and this legacy of customer care and community involvement will continue far into the future.
THANK YOU, NORTHLAND! A message from Hamish, owner of Pacific Motor Group For me, our business is just about people doing stuff for other people. It’s that simple. Our goal is to be a cut above – we recognise that people have a choice, and we are committed to providing our customers complete satisfaction across all of our services. It’s through our open communications, our customer feedback, that we grow and achieve that level of customer satisfaction. We like to think that every customer walks out of that door genuinely feeling like they’ve received value for money. To me, it’s all about the experience – it’s not about the sales targets, it always has been and always will be about the people. So I’d like to say thank you Northland; and we invite you to come in and see us, have a coffee, and experience a caring, committed relationship with one of Northland’s longest-standing local businesses.
INVESTED IN OUR COMMUNITY Pacific Motor Group has a long history of supporting many community causes and charities throughout the Northland district. 2015 will mark the 10th anniversary of the company’s annual car giveaway in support of Sport Northland – Pacific Motor Group sees it as an incentive to keep Northland moving, healthy and happy! The need for local businesses to play a role in the success and well-being of Northland’s community groups is a belief that underpins Pacific Motor Group’s business philosophy; and this community dedication is also reflected in their strong customer relationships.
it is necessary to have access to complicated diagnostic equipment to assess and diagnose engine problems: Pacific Motor Group not only possesses this technology, but they are highly trained in the use of it. The technicians at Pacific Motor Group are truly experts in their field, and this level of quality service is all part of the Pacific Motor Group customer experience.
Pacific Motor Group: the largest range, the best experience.
Our range Along with the move to Porowini Ave came an increase in showroom space and outdoor viewing space: and Pacific Motor Group has taken full advantage of the extra room! With a determination to bring the widest range possible to their Northland customers, you will find an astounding variety of makes and models on show: all available for that all-important test drive. Makes include Ford, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Suzuki, Fiat and Alfa Romeo; and the models – well, you could spend all day looking through the range! From Suzuki motorbikes to the latest model Jeep Cherokee and the ever popular Mazda 2: there is something to suit every budget, every need, and every taste at Pacific Motor Group.
Service – with a smile! Aside from the substantial range of vehicles on display, the one thing that sets Pacific Motor Group apart is their absolute commitment to premium customer care and expert service. The technicians at Pacific Motor Group are meticulously trained in all aspects of the makes and models on sale – and many more besides. For many modern vehicles,

S J REID LTD
“ “ OUR VISION AND DEDICATION IS THE KEY TO OUR SUCCESS
The Growing Battle...
S J Reid Ltd is into its 3rd decade of serving Northland. Having commenced with a single bulk tip truck in late 1994, Simon and Jo Reid have grown, diversified and restructured their business over the past 15 years.
By Simon Reid Born in Kaitaia and raised in a farming background, slightly
The business now runs 6 Log Truck and trailers, 2 Drop-side Truck and Trailers and 1 Bulk unit in conjunction with the subsidiary businesses ‘Always Wet Household Water’ and ‘Diesel & Dirt Landscape Supplies’.
South West of the little village of Herekino, my roots were well and truly going to see me doing something involved with farming (but as it turned out with a twist). Trucks were a major influence in my early life, shaping my destiny without me actually realising it. When Ted & Bonnie sold the farm and moved to Kaitaia, they purchased a house not far from Kaitaia Transport’s Depot. The rest, folks, is history.
S J Reid Ltd operates from their ‘Diesel & Dirt’ yard, which is conveniently placed in Maungatapere – just minutes from Whangarei and on the way to many of Northland’s Rural hubs such as Dargaville, Waipu, Ruakaka and Kaikohe
Bunking School, late nights “riding shotgun” in stock trucks with old names like Arthur Yates, Herbie Petera, Johnny Brott and others became the norm for me, as a young fulla with little interest in being any sort of scholar. These early teen years shaped my future and the involvement via my peers moulded me into the ‘do it once, do it right’ bloke I am now. Half a lifetime of trucking has given me the opportunity to travel many of NZ’s roads and take me into regions and places the average person in the street may never see. This is a great way to see our country – and your boss pays you to do it. No better office exists anywhere! In our business, which is small in comparison to many, we do take on guys with little or no experience and train them ourselves. Without this input, transport in NZ, I believe is in real danger of not being able to keep up with the demands we are now facing. Truck driving was once known as a “Fall Back-on” job and it may have been just that for the average bloke. That has now changed. Today it is a highly skilled and crucial part of N.Z.’s economy. Let us see it in a new light. The only things not delivered by trucks in this country are children! So everything we have purchased was at some point freight. Yes!! Pushchairs, pens, groceries, petrol, motor vehicles, mountain bikes, shop shelves, fridges, milk, beer. You name it they were all once freight on a truck. At its point of sale it then became a product, and was adorned with its tag.
We have trucks heading both North and South daily, and can take care of all your Bulk Cartage requirements. Simon is a born and bred Northlander, and throughout his career has driven just about every road in New Zealand… Truck driving is his passion! Along with Simon managing the business and Jo running the office/administration side of things , the company has a close knit staff of 13, including 2 mechanics and a team of experienced truck drivers with a sound knowledge of Northland’s roads and Rural communities.
‘ALWAYS WET ’ HOUSEHOLD WATER DELIVERIES
Trains do have their place, but would you have one back up your drive with a load of concrete for a garage floor, or pull into Pak ‘N’ Save carpark to deliver a load of freight?!. Truck driving now places huge demands on its participants. All areas now have their own particular set of specialty factors. Examples are chilled and frozen food, Livestock, Logging, General freight, Wood chip and Mill by-products, Timber, Posts, Poles, Machinery, Construction materials and the list goes on. All these areas are additional knowledge to the core task at hand in keeping sometimes massive vehicles under control and manoeuvring them around the countryside in a safe and efficient manner. So, the next time you want to give that Truckie a blast on the horn or a single or two fingered salute, remember his freight is probably going to be your next purchase. Our industry is now under such close scrutiny to all the enforcers it is actually chasing good men away. No other industry is more imperative to our Country’s well-being and survival, yet here we are constantly under the close eye of so many. Government Departments: We have OSH, CVIU, ACC, Police, IRD, WorkSafe, Ministry of Justice, all placing demands upon us. Some bright arse decides we need a month’s holiday a year, and then bitch when the cost of groceries increase (wisdom? Hhmm). The passion resonating here is strong. Transport operators know that if trucks in N.Z stop, this Country would be on its knees within days, and no bloody railway is going to fix that. To sum it all up, “look around and see how many grey haired old buggers are still out there driving trucks. If you want your Xmas goodies available in shops to keep coming, perhaps you should see if there is an old Truckie out there who will take your kids for a ride. Just watch out Big Brother doesn’t nab you for being a bad parent because you let your child into a workplace situation” What has our world come to and where to from here?

ARE YOU BEING SERVED? W hen it comes to servicing your car two of the biggest problems are memory and money. As long as the car is performing we just plain forget to get it checked and when we think we should, we justify not having it done because money’s tight. It’s false economy of course and having the car clap out on a rainy winter’s night isn’t pleasant.
It’s a good policy to establish a relationship with your mechanic. Most vehicle service providers are bound by consumer protection legislation and, if they’re part of a franchise or belong to a recognized servicing organisation, are additionally contractually bound to provide a certain standard of customer care. If you think you’re not being looked after well, change your provider. It’s a competitive world and you’re the customer. The Warrant of Fitness check acts as a service reminder of course and WOF rules were recently changed. Since 1 January 2014 all vehicles first registered on or after 1 January 2004 now only require annual inspections for the lifetime of the vehicle.
WOF changes introduced: • After an initial inspection new vehicles won’t require a WOF inspection until the third anniversary of first registration • Vehicles less than three years old will be issued a WOF that expires on the third anniversary of first registration or 12 months after the current WOF expires, whichever is the longest • Vehicles first registered on or after 1 January 2000 will require an annual
inspection • Vehicles first registered before 1 January 2000 still require a sixmonthly WOF inspection. For more information–www.nzta.govt.nz

HORTICULTURE AND AGRICULTURE
Commercial Horticulture is Alive and Well
C
ommercial horticulture in Northland is alive and well. Although we are often reading of the ups and downs of the Dairy industry, commercial Horticulture has been a steady industry in Northland, in what can be an extremely challenging “lifestyle”. Although the area of production has remained relatively static over the years, individual crops have their periods of time in the spotlight. At present the Avocado industry, although affected by annual variations in production, is slowly increasing in planted area (mostly in the Far North) with a strong demand internationally for this high health food encouraging this expansion. After the initial shock of the devastation caused by PSA in the kiwifruit industry, growers in the affected areas are starting to get to grips with management techniques to minimise its impact, fortunately Whangarei remains an area free of this disease. Although prices to growers for the Gold fruit have decreased, the high production levels still make it a very viable crop. Tamarillo grower numbers have decreased over recent years due to the severe impact of an insect (Tomato Potato Psyllid) which carries Liberibacter, an organism which will kill Tamarillo trees within weeks of infection. This has been too hard for many growers to overcome so now
there is just a strong core group of growers who have to work extremely hard at maintaining their orchards in a productive capacity. Cymbidium orchids are going to be starting their production in the next couple of months and as their main markets are Japan and USA a lot depends on the exchange rate and economic health of the importing country as to how well the grower will do. Consequently Orchid growers have had a couple of tough years and this year appears to be heading in the same direction, this has resulted in some growers leaving the industry. The Northland grape growers are just starting their harvest for this season (perfect weather for them at the moment) and although small in area they are becoming recognised for producing some outstanding wines. The local indoor and outdoor vegetable industry has had steady production over the last 15-20 years with the Whangarei Growers Market being a life saver for some of the smaller producers who would have had far too many “administration” costs applied to them if they supplied the traditional marketers based in Auckland and Wellington. These marketers are still very important for the larger producers, but the growth and strength of the Saturday morning market is also a vital part of the communication between the grower and end consumer.

A fertile future
We’re here for the long haul because the future has never looked more exciting.
That’s the word from Ballance Agri-Nutrients’ Northland distribution manager Dean Guerin, who says growth prospects for the fertiliser cooperative in the Far North have never looked brighter. “We’re a very proud Northland business, having been operating for over 50 years,’’ Mr Guerin said. “We’ve been a large contributor to the Northland economy, offering significant employment and contractor service work. Importantly, we’re also a very environmentally focused organisation, which is notably highlighted by our promotion and delivery of the annual Ballance Farm Environment Awards that supports, recognises and rewards farm environment high achievers. “To be honest, overall, things have never looked better. With change now a constant in our industry, we will always be looking at ways to improve all aspects of how we do business.’’
experience in the fertiliser game and for the past two years he has been running Ballance’s Northland distribution network, which covers a big patch from the Auckland harbour bridge north.
Looking ahead, Mr Guerin can’t talk more positively about the potential for Ballance and, importantly, the spin-offs that should provide for the greater Northland economy. The company’s renewed focus on improving their supply chain distribution is alive and well following the decommissioning of their aging superphosphate and sulphuric acid production facilities back in 2013. Ballance made the decision to stop production at Whangarei because with less farmland in Northland as a result of urbanisation, changes in phosphate use trends and a reduction in overall fertiliser use locally it was uneconomic to keep that area of the business operational.
Mr Guerin knows what he is talking about.
Despite the changes, Ballance is still clearly committed to Northland, with improvements being made at all despatch sites and upgrade projects being completed every year.

oil refinery sulphur waste to manufacture fertiliser products for the agri-business sector has also been an important part of the business and has been increasing big time. The product is loaded on to ships at Marsden Pt, trucked to Mt Maunganui and transferred to other Ballance manufacturing and distribution sites in the South Island. The increase in production of sulphur from waste over the past couple of years is part of Ballance’s ongoing commitment to looking at smarter ways to manufacture fertiliser and create efficiencies. That desire to evolve and improve is also being lead from the top, with Mark Wynne having been appointed Ballance’s new chief executive, replacing Larry Bilodeau, who retired last September. And for Dean Guerin, and his Northland distribution area, it’s full steam ahead. “Ballance Agri-Nutrients is a fantastic business and the company is committed to Whangarei and the Northland region. Of that, there is no doubt. That has to be great news for everyone.’’
MEET THE BOSS Who: Dean Guerin What: Ballance AgriNutrients Northland distribution manager How long in the business: Two years in current role but 20 in the fertiliser industry. Future hopes for Ballance in the Far North: “To be honest, overall, things have never looked better.’’ What he loves about living and working in Northland: “I’m a born and bred Northlander and I love the great lifestyle that the region provides. It’s a great place to live and raise my family. We all love the outdoors and the beaches, which are the best in the world.’’

Forestry Guidelines Improve Compliance
N
orthland’s forestry sector has achieved a noticeable improvement in consent compliance since the launch of regional guidelines for forestry earthworks and harvesting.
They provide practical and cost-effective ways to minimise environmental effects from forestry operations, such as soil erosion and slash/waste wood or sediment making its way into streams.
The guidelines are a tool to help forestry owners and contractors meet resource consent conditions and permitted activity standards. Their launch in 2012 followed two-and-ahalf-years of collaborative work by the RMA Forestry Development Group – made up of representatives of the local forestry industry – and the Northland Regional Council.
The regional council is offering training sessions in June, targeting owners of small woodlots. Please contact Lesley Webb at lesleyw@nrc.govt.nz if you are interested in attending one of these sessions.

Putting Northland first
DNFAO LR HETSRTO N NOISIV RY
Beauty is only Skin Deep!
S
urely you want assurance that your house is built on a strong foundation with a solid, tested frame holding it upright…or are you happy to trust your house to timber that “looks good” but hasn’t had its structural properties tested?
After the tragic events in Christchurch you would think that every home owner and builder would be focused on ensuring that all houses are built out of timber products that have been tested, audited and passed as compliant with design standards. This is what the relevant standard (NZS 3622:2004) is designed to do. However, it continues to amaze us that people, including those in the timber industry, do not understand that modern technology allows us to test each structural member and ensure it is fit for purpose – whether it looks “pretty” or not. A study conducted by the Forest Research Institute in 1997 showed conclusively that visual grading, (ie using the NZ grading rules
No1 Framing) gave different performance characteristics depending on which region the timber came from. The result showed that out of the 6 regions tested, only two met the actual requirements that the visual grading was supposed to achieve. One of these regions was Northland. This meant that houses were being built out of correctly visually graded timber – but it didn’t necessarily guarantee that this timber was as strong or stiff as it was assumed. Today we can test each structural member to ensure it meets the required standard. These results are further audited by an independent third party. Each sawmill now creates their own grade rules that allow them to generate products that meet or exceed the specified criteria – and these products are then tested to ensure they are “fit for purpose”. For Northland structural sawmills this is a significant advantage. The mild seasons and harsh clay soils up here result in the densest pine grown in the
country, which means a larger proportion of the tree meets structural standards. This will become increasingly important to the Northland regional economy as the demand for housing components grows. However, the Northland pine tree isn’t really a thing of beauty, it is a functional beast. It contains quite high levels of resin and the branches are larger and more numerous than found in trees from the Central North Island - but our tree is strong! As a timber producer, Northpine continually gets comments that some of the knots are large, or there are too many of them, ie the boards aren’t as pretty as they used to be when applying the old New Zealand Standards. However, when you put these boards in a test rig and place them under stress – they perform wonderfully. Beauty is only skin deep – it is the thickness of the cell walls in the cellulose matrix of the wood which sets Northland timber apart – not the knot structure.
Northpine continues to use the characteristics of the Northland pine to its advantage. The Northbeam structural beams and posts utilize these strength characteristics to produce a specialist high value range of products that are difficult to replicate elsewhere in the country. These products can compete with steel or engineered wood products, but also combine the warmth and beauty of solid wood with this structural performance. As well as the Northbeam range, the Waipu sawmill produces the complete range of standard structural components for house framing. These components, all made from Northland pine, provide the basis “of a growing locally based value-added” industry. With a steady stream of maturing, structurally superior pine logs in the North, the company’s vision of a sustainable specialist sawmill continues to strengthen. Northpine – Processing Northland logs in Northland into the future.!
STRONGER. DENSER. STIFFER.

Northbeam timber beams from Northpine are made exclusively from pine grown in Northland because it is stronger, denser and stiffer than pine grown anywhere else in New Zealand. The natural first choice for specifiers, Northbeam’s SG8-verified timber beams are available in lengths up to 7.2 metres. They enhance the elegance and aesthetic charm of your building in ways that cannot be replicated by steel or other materials.

Dry Spell Reinforces Importance of Storage and Efficiency
I
t was no surprise to finally have the official declaration that the east coast of the South Island is in drought. Northland was in this situation two years ago so locals are well aware of the devastation an extended dry spell can wreck. IrrigationNZ is currently talking to Ministers, MPs and councils about the need for further national investment in regional water storage. The only way to prevent communities suffering drought is through storing water. New Zealand has plentiful supply which flows out to sea; we just need to get better at banking water and getting it to the places that need it. Several water storage projects around the country are already in the pipeline but they will need significant community, business and government support to proceed. This summer’s South Island drought will end up costing New Zealanders millions. It’s time we bit the bullet and got better at storing water. In the meantime, if you are an irrigating farmer or grower in Northland what can you do to minimize your risk of running out of water when we encounter a summer like this? With seasonal volumes under pressure, it’s timely to look at the tools and tactics you can employ. The first thing to check is that your equipment is operating optimally so whatever water is pumped is applied as effectively as possible. Keep abreast of what is happening with your water supply and prepare for
further water restrictions to ensure domestic and stock water can be maintained and crops managed with restricted supply. Scheduling is key; particularly now irrigators are limited in the water they have through seasonal volumes and with water meters in place, so know your soils and how much water your crops require and apply irrigation accordingly. Groundwater users in particular should think about annual volumes and where they are at. Test your irrigator is working as it should including pressure and sprinkler performance. If you’re running out of water re-nozzling might stretch it out for longer. Alternatively if you operate a number of irrigation systems think about shutting off the less efficient ones, long laterals in pivot corners for example. That way you can continue to operate more efficient irrigators such as pivots and linear moves for longer.
“Irrigating growers and farmers can tap into advice and resources - including workshops provided by IrrigationNZ - to get through this dry spell.”
IrrigationNZ has created a check list of options to help you make the right choices during dry periods. The options available are influenced by your irrigation equipment and set-up and how growers and farmers react also depends on your particular water restrictions and land use. You can find further resources to guide you, alongside the checklist, on the IrrigationNZ website www.irrigationnz.co.nz

Doug Wilson started his family run haulage company Northern Rural Haulage, 6 years ago after 35 years in the transport industry. Northern Rural Haulage has grown to become a significant player in the haulage and cartage business in the North Island, all from a small yard in Maungakaramea. Doug is a legend in logistics, having worked for United Carriers for 35 years and now his own company boasts vehicles from 30 tonne truck and trailers, 6 wheelers and a 5 tonne tip truck, not forgetting a transporter. Doug says “the large number and variety of trucks we have at our
disposal means we can pretty much do anything from delivering 2 metres of metal to a house in Hikurangi, 30 tonnes of palm kernel to a farm in Dargaville, or having a fleet of trucks on roadwork projects”. When asked about what makes Northern Rural Haulage different to other haulage firms Doug says, “We never say No! We deliver what people want, when they want it!” Nicky the office manager says, “Its true, Doug always say yes to every order, if it’s possible. If all the drivers are busy, Doug gets on his hi-viz vest and gets on the road. He hates disappointing customers!” With a range of 17 trucks and
numerous drivers there is nothing Northern Rural Haulage can’t do. Being competitively priced, having experienced local drivers and always saying yes, Northern Rural Haulage should be your first call if you need anything shifted away or brought to your place. 17 trucks and 6 years trading, that’s a serious amount of kilometres and serious amount of happy customers. Cartage to the rural, commercial, construction and residential sectors Call Doug, explain what you need, and listen to him say “yeah, we can do that!” Anything, Anywhere, Anytime.
• Northland owned • Specialising in palm kernel, fertiliser, lime & metal cartage • 30 tonne units available, 6 wheelers for on site, building & subdivision work • Competitive rates • 35 years in the transport industry

RURAL
From Survive Mode to Thrive Mode By Louise Wilson
I
f you are reading this article chances are Northland is the region you call home. Northland has some lifestyle advantages. The warm climate, beautiful beaches and bush make it a paradise for those of us who enjoy fishing, boating, and wearing jandals in July. Unfortunately it has some not so flash stats as well. According to the Tai Tokerau Northland Growth Study (MBIE, MPI 2015), Northland has the lowest household income in New Zealand. Unemployment is two per cent higher than the national average, and we have a mass exodus of young people and unreliable infrastructure. But you already knew that didn’t you? We all know what the problems are. Let’s focus on the solutions. As Far North District Chair of Federated Farmers I know dairying, drystock farming, and horticulture has untapped potential to lift Northland’s economic performance while simultaneously maintaining or improving our environment. The contribution and potential opportunities for growth in each sector is significant. Two years ago, Northland’s dairy industry had 935 herds, employed 3462 people and contributed $331million in regional GDP (MBIE, MPI 2015). Fonterra estimates that dairy production in Northland has the
potential to increase from 92 million to 100 million kgs of milk solids within 10 years. Our drystock and grain farming has shown its potential contributing $82 million or 2.4 per cent of regional GDP (Northland Inc/ Infometrics 2012). Improvements behind the farm gate such as Land and Environment Planning, soil testing, paddock subdivision, pasture monitoring and water reticulation could lift profitability by 10 per cent within 10 years.
• Resilient farming systems require farmers that can innovate and are willing to experiment. • Attracting young people and adding value to our industry requires leaders • Preventing biosecurity breaches and promoting NZinc requires central government. Though the New Zealand landscape is predominantly pastoral, only
15 per cent of New Zealanders live in rural communities. Too many rural communities are failing to thrive. They are losing their schools, medical centres, shops and service providers. Lifting Northland’s economic performance is the key to reversing this exodus. Our primary industries and rural communities need to work together to move Northland’s economy from survive mode to thrive mode.
Horticulture more recently contributed $147 million (2.6%) of Northland’s GDP and employed 1890 (2.9%) of the region’s population (2013). Apiculture is booming but generally adverse weather and plant diseases have slowed growth in this sector. To enable dairying, drystock farming and horticulture to thrive, multiple threats must be addressed. While I can’t change the exchange rate or the weather, I can anticipate floods, droughts, and biosecurity incursions/diseases. Overcoming these challenges requires input from farmers and growers, industry leaders, scientists, local and central government. • Disease resistant crops require scientists for research and development. • Water storage for drought mitigation requires local government cooperation.

T
he Northpower Whangarei Native Bird Recovery Centre is without doubt a Northland treasure.
It attracts visitors from around the world, yet continues to run on a shoe-string.
And it’s all thanks to the passion and commitment of Robert and Robyn Webb who founded the non-profit organisation back in 1992. Ever since, it has been run by a bunch of dedicated volunteers.
So Robert put him in an adjustable sling on a daily basis and after hand feeding him for five days he stood. Now he can walk – a result Robert and Robyn are very pleased about. Another victim of a car is an Australasian bittern which should also make a full recovery over time.
Every year they care for around 1300 rescued birds – from penguins and kiwis to pukekos and wekas.
Because birds are fed fresh food every day, Robert says ongoing public donations are gratefully accepted.
The recovery stories Robert can share are remarkable and his enthusiasm is everpresent. Right now his team is nursing a young harrier hawk hit by a car. Upon arrival
The Centre is wheelchair friendly and plenty of room to get into the Education Centre as well. And if you want to check out some live webcam activity, go to www.nbr.org.nz.

On the fast-track to UFB
More charge to EVs
2015 is shaping up as a big year for Northpower and Northpower Fibre. With more than 3500 people already connected to New Zealand’s first (and world-class) ultra-fast fibre network, we’re expecting plenty more Whangarei residents and businesses to connect this year. “You take the Port area of Whangarei for example and we’re talking an uptake rate of 57% already. Businesses on fibre are discovering savings and greater efficiencies. I’d like to see 80% of local businesses on fibre within a couple of years,” says Mr Dawson, Northpower general Manager Network. Northpower provides the first 30m of fibre installation to businesses on the UFB network free. “Due to the sheer volume of orders at times, there will be delays connecting people to the Whangarei UFB network, but we have geared up with additional technicians to assist in the process. We ask people to be patient because it will be worth the wait – and the fact it is free (up to 200m of fibre installation) for most residential customers is quite enticing. To find out more (and to find a list of retail service providers on the Northpower Fibre network) visit the ‘Our Partners’ page at www.northpowerfibre.co.nz. And to find out if fibre is at your door, go to the Coverage tab, enter your address and click on ‘Check Availability’.
We’ve added another charger to our electric vehicle charge station at Alexander Street in Whangarei. This one is to cater for EVs that have found their way to New Zealand from Europe. The latest charging point is an IEC 62196 (a 2kW, three phase unit) that can fully charge a Tesla in four hours. Our existing charge points are the SAE J1772 (7kW, single phase) which takes four and a half hours to charge an EV like a Nissan Leaf or Mistubishi iMiEV. We opened New Zealand’s first fast-charge station in May 2014 with the CHAdeMO fast charger capable of delivering an 80% charge in 30 minutes. Our charge station remains powered by Northland water, courtesy of Northpower’s Wairua Hydro Power Station at Titoki. We have now added an additional standard EV charger (taking our total to four) at our head office, in Mt Pleasant Rd, Otaika. Over the next 12 months we plan to dot EV charge stations in townships throughout Kaipara and Whangarei, creating an ‘EV loop’ so our customers can easily use their EV as a prime mode of transport.
25 and still going strong! Thousands of Northlanders have experienced the smiling face of Northpower’s Customer Adviser Jan Thomsen. And when Jan sets up the Northpower stand at the Northland field days later this month, it’ll be the 25th time she’s been involved in the event. Soon after, Jan became the travelling face of Northpower in the community and within a few years she had developed an electrical safety education programme for schools. Her first school visit was to Whangarei Primary in May 2003. The programme was so successful that electricity companies from around New Zealand adopted it – along with the Electrical Engineers’ Association. In 2004 Jan and Northpower were nationally recognised for the school safety programme. And to this day, she remains passionate about the work she does and the impact that has within the Kaipara and Whangarei communities. “Because my role is so varied I have gained a lot of personal satisfaction from it. I have loved my job and I have a passion for electrical safety. “It’s nice to help people but I have had so much support from my managers and colleagues it makes my job easy. Interacting with children has a big impact on awareness of electrical safety because they share those lessons with their families.”
Storm response We are constantly working on ways to better respond to the challenges of storm conditions, although the way our crews worked through multiple storms last year was superb. What makes our job easier is having you, our customers in Kaipara and Whangarei, tell us where outages (or the potential causes of outages) are. It is helpful to know regardless, as we aren’t always aware of outages when we are being battered by storms. The Northpower network covers more than 5700sq/km.
A slice of Northland history Northpower first began supporting environmental efforts at Matakohe-Limestone Island in the late 1990s. So it is pleasing to still be playing a part all these years later and continuing our relationship with the Friends of Matakohe-Limestone Island. The island is a sanctuary for any number of native animals and an invaluable crèche for kiwi thanks largely to the efforts of some keen kiwi conservationists including the Department of Conservation. The island is also the site of Matakohe pa and one of Whangarei’s earliest industrial sites - the Limestone Island cement works, founded in 1856. The island is open to the public.

Healthy Homes a must Northpower is driven to see the Healthy Homes scheme completed within the next four years. This programme insulates the homes of our highest need families with a particular focus on vulnerable children. So far 6000 homes in Northland have been insulated through a mix of government funding and sponsorship like ours. But there are still approximately 6000 homes to be completed. The more we all support it the sooner more Northlanders will have access to warmer homes and that will have a positive impact on the health of our community and on our local health system. The service provider for this initiative is Healthy Homes Tai Tokerau, who can be contacted by phoning 0800 738 763 or via their website: healthyhomesnorth.co.nz/insulation/.
Since 2000, Jan has visited 321 community groups and since 2003, 199 schools. She still maintains a youthful enthusiasm for the role. Jan Thomsen truly is the face of Northpower in the community – thanks Jan!
