Waipu N Tartan Waipu’s Winter Festival

W
aipu In Tartan is a winter festival which began way back on the 1st July 2006, on a sunny Saturday in Waipu. From its humble beginnings, this celebration has grown into a fun month of activities. The creative drive behind this event came from Waipu local Rosemary Neave. In her quest to create a vibrant event which would attract visitors to Waipu through the winter months she researched all sorts of options. Waipu isn’t shy about its Scottish heritage, so whe she discovered Tartan Day, she knew her search was over. What could be more vibrant and exciting than an event based around tartan. This year, Tartan Day is celebrated as ‘Tartan Day Eve’ on the 30th June at 11am outside the Celtic Barn so the children at Waipu Primary School can don their best tartan, hear about International Tartan Day and hear the wondrous sound of the bagpipes.
Through the mists of time to present day…
So, where does Tartan Day come from? Alright, a little history lesson for you. Don’t worry, we’ll keep it simple! After the Jacobite Revolution, England made many attempts to subdue the Highland Clans. The Act of Proscription passed in 1746
was one such attempt. Without going into too much historical detail, this Act essentially stripped the Highlanders of their right to wear Highland dress. What this Act failed to take into account was the fiery, passionate and downright stubborn nature of the Clans. Rather than stamping out the making of tartan and kilt-wearing, the Act imbued it with an aura of romance and rebellion, and in so doing, kept it very much alive. July 1st is International Tartan Day which marks the 1782 Repeal Proclamation which allowed Highland Clans to once again don tartan and play the bagpipes. This was significant not just for the Highlanders – but for the whole of Scotland. From this day onwards, tartan has been the national dress, and very proudly worn to express culture, identity and patriotism. Here in New Zealand, many of us can claim Scottish heritage, especially those of us in Waipu, so Tartan Day is more than a chance to dress up and have wonderful time: it’s an opportunity to reconnect with our Celtic ancestry.
Tartan: its more than a fabric
strength. During Victorian times it became so popular that anyone who was anyone began a mad scramble to secure their own family tartan. Tartan, with its many hues, has become a popular way to show pride, express identity and feel connected to our heritage. Today, there are literally thousands of tartan designs.
Tartan isn’t just for kilts!
If you’re not keen on wearing a kilt, don’t despair! From socks, scarves and shawls to coats, tops and hats, tartan comes in every shape, style and size imaginable! Some people even dress up their dogs and bring them along to join in the fun of Tartan Day. If you are a keen wearable arts junkie, then Art N Tartan Wearable Arts is an event you can’t miss. It’s like the World of Wearable Arts – with tartan! Held every year in Waipu’s magnificent Celtic Barn, the Art N Tartan Wearable Arts is a headline act of the Waipu in Tartan festival. So, if you have an urge to get back in touch with your Celtic roots, be a part of this years’ Waipu N Tartan!
Since 1782, tartan making and wearing has gone from strength to

Strong local interest in the Northpine Cup
R
uakaka Racing joins in with the celebration of the Scottish heritage of Waipu with the running of the Northpine Waipu cup meeting on Saturday July 8. For several years the Whangarei Racing Club has joined in the month of Waipu in Tartan celebrations that commences with the International Tartan Day on 1 July. The day attracts a strong interest with the Scottish base in the region and there is a lot of tartan colours shown on the day, with spot prizes for those wearing the colours. The pipers and dancers will be in full flight, between races, with many of the racing patrons joining in. Local interest in the Northpine Waipu Cup will be even stronger given the very impressive performance of Kaharau in winning the Lawson Cartage Bream Bay Cup over the same 1600 metre trip at Ruakaka on 17 June. Kaharau is trained by the Rae racing stables of Kenny and Lisa Rae in partnership with their daughter Krystal Williams. The Northpine Waipu Cup is developing into the ideal lead up race for the ITM Whangarei Gold Cup over 2100 metres two weeks later. It is expected that Kaharau would continue on to this race and that may lead to a clash with last year’ winner Smedley who is trained at Uretiti Beach by Clayton ■ Owners of Rocknrolla and sponsors celebrate the presentation of the 2016 Stevenson. International Tartan Day
M
ost Kiwis can lay claim to at least some Scottish heritage. The Scots came here in their droves in the colonial times, landing in places like Dunedin (which is named for the great Scottish city of Edinburgh), while others settled for warmer climates, like Northland’s very own Waipu. Take a walk down the main street of Waipu and you can see the impact of the town’s heritage everywhere. The Scottish flags flailing, the dash of tartan on building faces, the names on street signs, and if you’re lucky, the distant sound of someone playing a tune on the bagpipes. On New Year’s Day the town plays host to the world-renowned Waipu Highland Games, now coming up to its 147th year – a staggering feat for a Highland Games anywhere. Fortunately, New Year’s Day isn’t the only opportunity Northlanders can celebrate their Scottish roots. July 1st is International Tartan Day, the worldwide celebration of Scottish heritage. International Tartan Day marks the anniversary of the repeal of the 1747 Act of Proscription, ending a ban on the wearing of tartan that had been in place for 36 years. The event is celebrated around New Zealand and the world in a number of different ways, including parades, tattoos, and concerts, featuring traditional Scottish dance and music. International Tartan Day is a great way for Kiwis to get in touch with their Scottish ancestry. If you would like to join in the celebrations and need some tartan to wear, get in touch with Scots in Spirit. We have been Northland’s sole supplier of Scottish heritage products for the past three years, as well as one of New Zealand’s premier retailers of all things Celtic. We offer a huge range of tartan products for men, ladies, and kids, from traditional wool kilts, to scarves, sashes, and skirts, made in almost every tartan available. We can also help you learn more about your heritage and understand the history of the Scottish Clans and families you belong to. Give us a call on (09) 971 7694 or visit our website at http://www.scotsinspirit.com to find out more.

Art’n’Tartan set to break all records
Photos taken by Peter Grant
Also new is the category, “Our Place in Aotearoa”, where artists can gather ideas from all the rich, New Zealand cultural backgrounds. The new section, “Beam me up Scottie!” will encourage designers and artists to look to the future for their inspiration. The extremely generous sponsors are once again on board and a huge prize pool is up for grabs. Competition will be intense. Rehearsals for the event are well under way. Once again the show promises a wonderful kaleidoscope of music and dance, light and sound to thrill the audience and showcase the designs to their best advantage. Demand for tickets is always extremely high, with the superb awards night selling out within hours.
T
he highest number of entries ever received for Waipu’s Art’n’Tartan Wearable Art Awards will ensure an exciting and entertaining show this year. The contest will be held in Waipu’s magnificent Celtic Barn on 21st and 22nd July and brand new and inspiring categories will be a feature of the show. The Art’n’Tartan organising team, led by Artistic Director, Helen Frances, felt it was time for a change and a revamping of the categories has injected new life into the event. Also on board as choreographer will be Jayden Rudolph. Jayden, a past pupil of Bream Bay College and now studying the performing arts at the University of Otago, won top prize for work as Creative Director for the national and regional stage challenge. Jayden hopes to become the first student from Bream Bay to obtain a degree in the performing arts. He has been involved in one way or another in Art’nTartan since the age of thirteen. Stage Manager this year will be Waipu farmer, Neil Troost. Neil has vast experience in working in theatre and the performing arts. The contest, under the umbrella of the Waipu Museum, is the wellestablished Northland answer to WOW. It was first conceived as the finale to Tartan week, Waipu’s celebration of all things Scottish. The first show was held in 2010 to great acclaim. Since then it has developed a reputation for excellence and professionalism. Contestants, and indeed, members of the audience, come from as far afield as Roxburgh in the South Island and Kerikeri to the north. This year’s show invites entrants to create a “Weird and Wonderful” glow-in-the dark piece of wearable art for one section.
Details can be found on the Waipu Museum website and the Art’n’Tartan Facebook page. Prices this year are $45 for opening night and the Saturday afternoon, with a matinee price of $20 for children up to 18 years. A ticket for Awards Night will cost $55. Milk Off Champions becomes a team event
F
or the fourth year running the quest to crown new ‘Milk Off’ champions is on. This year we are mixing things up a bit by making it a team event. You will get to see a different side of Morag and Agnes, as once again they will be gathered from the back paddock, warmed up and ready to go. Anyone is welcome to enter the competition – no prior competitive milking qualifications are needed - as long as you know the underside from the topside of a cow and are 18 years or older. Things are likely to get even messier than last year, but don’t worry aprons will be provided. Be warned, this is not for the dairy intolerant or those who don’t enjoy a wee dram. Although the grand prize for fastest milker is highly coveted, there will be an additional Scottish themed quiz for everyone to enter – whether milking or not. The prizes have grown and the quiz will be more of a challenge. The team event will require strategy as well as speed, if you don’t have a team we can sort teams, so don’t be shy. The trophy for the fastest milkers in the shire will be hotly contested so come along for an exciting night. Refreshments will be provided, along with a hearty BBQ (BBQ’d haggis anyone?!) to keep all involved well fed and watered while cheering on your champion milker. This competition is something very different to all others – but very fitting with our local dairy farming industry. Talk to your clan, get a team together and don’t delay. Please reserve your spot by calling in to YourVet or phoning them on 09 432 0500. Non-milking spectators are welcome to turn up on the night also. Kick-off is 6pm on Saturday, 8th July at the YourVet clinic – corner Millbrook Road and SH1. YourVet has two major announcements this year. We welcome a new business partner: Mark Borich. This solidifies our commitment to the area by providing a consistent veterinary service to our clients. We wish to emphasise that we intend to develop long term relationships with our clients. Secondly, in order to improve our services to those over the hill (not specifically the elderly) we are opening a branch clinic in Maungaturoto. Check it out in the weeks to come - corner of Bickerstaff on the way into town. The whole team at YourVet enjoy being part of the greater Waipu community. As in previous years, we are offering free vaccination and ringing of calves and lambs being reared for AgDay. We are looking forward to seeing you at our next community event July 8th.

ello All Well nobody can say that being a first time Northland Regional Councillor is dull. If you have been wondering what I have been doing as a councillor over the past six months, please read on. These views are mine alone and do not represent those of Northland Regional Council. As 5 of the 9 newly elected councilors were first timers, we had a very intensive induction into the ways of local government. With meeting other local authority councillors, staff, understanding the operational arm of council and preparing for the two decision making meetings left in 2016 time flew by and Christmas was upon us. 2017 opened with the vote on NRC contributing $1.5m to the Hundertwasser Art Centre and Wairau Maori Art Gallery, what an interesting and topical issue this one was. I supported this concept, as at this moment, it is the one project on the table which has advanced far enough to provide a much needed economic and cultural
boost to local and regional infrastructure. Workshops on the DRAFT Regional Plan, listening to submissions and then deliberating on the Pest and Marine Pathway Management Plan, Annual Plan 2017/18, Charging Policy 2017/18 and Navigation Safety Bylaw 2017 have taken considerable time and energy. I know many of the issues covered in these documents are dear to your hearts, believe me we all take your concerns seriously and listen and act with due deliberation. In closing please let me assure you all that local issues in my constituency of Coastal South also feature strongly in my workload. Attending local ratepayer and association meetings is a great time to catch up with you all and address your concerns at a more personal level. Kind regards Rick Stolwerk 021 823 770
