Winter in Waipu

W

inter in Waipu is a winter festival which began way back in 2006. From its humble beginnings, this celebration has grown into more than a month of activities. Today the festival comes under the umbrella of the Waipu Business & Community Inc. This busy group of volunteers work with the community to pull together a calendar which has something for everyone. Much of Winter in Waipu relates to Waipu’s Scottish history and its link to tartan and many locals Celtic heritage. The early settlers of Waipu came from Nova Scotia and Scotland to escape their homelands. Whether it was highland clearances, change in land ownership, technological and industrial change, Church Disruption, the aftermath of the Jacobite Uprising – only those early adventurers know the real reason that they boarded a boat for the long trip to New Zealand. Whatever their personal reasons they arrived in the Waipu area with a thirst for life. They had a drive to work hard and succeed and a strong sense of supporting each other in the community. That sense of community continues today. There are many local community groups alive and

well in Waipu. Some are based off the early Celtic roots of their ancestors whilst others are based on sport or interests. For a number of years, the Waipu annual winter activities were focused strongly around tartan. For many in the community it is not just a fabric, it is a symbol and connection to those who have weaved the Waipu community through blood, sweat and soil. If you’re not keen on wearing a kilt, don’t despair! From socks, scarves and shawls to coats, tops and hats, tartan comes in every shape, style and size imaginable! Some people even dress up their dogs and bring them along to join in the fun of Tartan Day. If you are a keen wearable arts junkie, then Art N Tartan Wearable Arts is an event you can’t miss. It’s like the World of Wearable Arts – with tartan! Held every year in Waipu’s magnificent Celtic Barn, the Art N Tartan Wearable Arts is a headline act of the Waipu in Tartan festival. So, if you have an urge to get out this winter come to Waipu. Join in with the festivities, you may never want to leave.

New look for Art’nTartan

A

friendly, welcoming atmosphere is nothing new in the growing township of Waipu but this is never more evident than during July when the town celebrates its Scottish heritage. Newcomers may be surprised to see the community supporting this, now iconic, event by wearing tartan in many guises.. kilts, shawls, scarves, jackets, hats - all are dusted off and worn with pride by both those with Scottish ancestors and those without.

The Scottish themed events that take place are rounded off by the amazing Art’nTartan Wearable Art Show and Contest. This event, organised entirely by volunteers was first held in 2010 and has gone from strength to strength. It has become a major event in the Waipu Calendar.

“We are really proud of Art’nTartan,” one resident, who has supported the show since its beginning, said. ‘It has put little old Waipu on the map.”

T

his year sees a new direction for the contest. Artistic Director, Helen Frances, whose vision has enabled the show to evolve and grow, has stepped aside to become Production Manager. Her place has been taken by a collaboration between collage artist and Waipu resident Annie Newall, and Jayden Rudolph, a past student at Bream Bay College. Jayden is already well known for his expertise in stage productions and dance. Both have been involved with Art’nTartan in one way or another for many years. New categories have inspired a large number of entries this year. A huge diversity of talent will be displayed. Scottish Surreal, seen as the “open section”, has invited artists to create a piece of wearable art inspired by the great surreal artists throughout history or by their own incongruous dreams - with no holds barred. The audience can look forward to a bizarre parade of costumes with a high degree of originality and innovation. Another innovative change is to include a section without tartan. Described as a category with no constraints in concept, construction or materials “Frost and Flame” will showcase models clad in costumes of red and white only.

T

his section has proved extremely popular with artists and the audience can look forward to a breathtaking experience. Joint Director Annie Newall has described this year’s show as, “…a showcase of wearable art with a contemporary theatrical performance.” She contin-ues…”With the collaboration of creative ideas the show will be one to re-member.” Art’n’Tartan will be held in Waipu’s Celtic Barn on Friday, July 20th and Saturday 21st at 8pm with a matinee on Saturday at 2pm. Tickets are already flying out the door and cost $45 for Friday evening and Saturday afternoon with $55 for the sought-after Saturday Awards night. Tickets for students under 18 years are $20. Tickets can be obtained direct from the Waipu Museum or Eventfinda where additional fees may apply. The show is not considered suitable for the under 5s.

The Vet Centres’ annual “Pets in Tartan Parade”

DIG OUT YOUR TARTAN!!

I

t’s that time of the year again when we can all dress up our favourite moggy, doggy, donkey, goat or whatever pet you happen to own and join the tartan madness down at The Centre in Waipu. The Vet Centre ‘Pets in Tartan’ parade is a fun family event event on Saturday July 7th, with prizes galore and give-away pet food samples for all entrants. After the parade, The Vet Centre staff will also provide a sausage sizzle with a gold coin donation for the Whangarei SPCA. This annual event allows the staff at The Vet Centre to mix with our clients in a relaxed and casual atmosphere whilst celebrating Waipu’s proud Scottish heritage. The parade gathers outside The Pizza Barn at 11.00 am and proceeds down the main street led by a piper to The Vet Centre on the corner of St Marys Rd.

Do not hesitate; dress up yourself or your family, not just your pets, and take part in this annual event. All pets are welcome!! (A note of caution, please ensure all pets are appropriately restrained) The prize will be awarded by The Vet Centre staff at the sausage sizzle outside The Vet Centre clinic after the parade. Prizes are not restricted to pets. Best dressed owners will also be recognised. We would really appreciate being able to use some of the photos taken during the event for promotional purposes, so if you have some great shots of the parade then please feel free to drop them into the team at the Waipu clinic. Look forward to seeing you and your well dressed pets on the day – The Vet Centre Team
