What’s trending in 2014-2015

Romance

Weddings are going all romantic — think elegance, charm and pastels. Getting wild. Wild flower bouquets — we’re not talking dainty little arrangements, but big and bold.

Illusions

Wedding dresses that hark back to the 60s, bows, illusion necklines in lovely lace, detachable tulle overskirts and romantic offthe-shoulder necklines.

Well groomed

Complementing the romantic wedding dress styles, grooms are wearing threepiece suits, bow ties and suspenders — think Gatsby

Bold maids

Bridesmaids dresses in pastels and pale shades or contrast a pastel wedding dress with bridesmaids in bold colours.

Inviting

Classy invitations in water colours — bold splashes or pastel washes.

Naked truth

Naked cakes — icing is out, layers of sponge decorated with real flowers on top are in.

Natural Table

settings in layered earth tones for understated elegance

Entertaining

Aside from music, think about other ways to entertain guests on your special day. Hire a photo booth — you get to keep a copy of photos of your guests and they get their own copies. Put a scrapbook page, glue and a pen on each table and get them to paste in their photo with a special wedding message. It’s a great start to the wedding album.

Special treat

Think outside the box — get Mr Whippy to turn up for dessert. Everybody loves Mr Whippy.

Gowns

s always, styles for wedding dresses in 2014-2015 is many and varied. The key is to find the look that creates magic for you, and which expresses your personality. The past continues to influence the present in fabrics, shapes and colours. Although white remains popular, brides are also opting for off -white, ivory, antiques, lattes and oysters. Full coloured dresses are still trending but brides are pulling back towards more subtle colours. Chantilly lace with delicate beading, along with translucent fabrics such as chiffons and georgettes are popular in wedding dresses. Pure silks are desirable for their flattering drape and softness, although brides on a strict budget can obtain a similar look with micro fibre chiffons. Dress styles from the 1930s to 1950s are influencing the cut of dresses – figure fitting to the waist or hip with lots of soft volume in the skirts. Ruching detail and lots of drape create a floaty and romantic look. Full veils and tiaras are out but informal headpieces such as a feathered fascinators or even a simple flower can draw attention to the hair. Functional fashion is in with some wedding dresses, traditional and modern,

including dainty pockets. An economical way to wear a beautiful bridal gown is by buying a pre-loved wedding dress, refitting and contemporising it. It might even be the one your mother wore at her wedding! While many brides have a fixed idea of their dream wedding dress, keep an open mind to ensure you wear a dress that suits both your body shape and the type of wedding you plan to have. Many brides want to lose weight prior to the wedding but it is safer to get a dress in a size that fits, then have it taken in if necessary. Consider comfort. A bride should put her gown on and then not have to think about it again until she’s ready to take it off. As well as your personal taste, the style of the dress is influenced by the location. At beach weddings you can get away with a simpler dress but church or more formal weddings suit an ornate gown. Remember to consider the climate. Where the wedding date coincides with the hottest time of year, a sleeveless dress will be more comfortable. But if your heart is set on a strapless dress even in the middle of winter, you can incorporate a bolero or some other dress item to keep warm.

Make the

Once the formality of the wedding had been decided and the Bride has chosen her gown, it is time for the Groom and his attendants to select theirs.

R

etailers and suit hire companies usually advise the following styles for weddings:

Formal Evening Wedding

Black dinner suit or tails, black evening trousers, white vest, bow tie or cummerbund and matching bow tie.

Formal Day Wedding

Grey tails and grey trousers, or black suit, white shirt, cummerbund and bow tie, top hat and gloves.

Semi -Formal Day or Evening Wedding

3 piece dark suit or a suit with coloured vest, white or coloured shirt, bow tie. Grey suiting is a lighter choice for summer weddings.

Informal Evening Wedding

2 or 3 piece suit, vest, shirt of choice, coordinating tie.

Special Themes

Themed weddings are very popular overseas but require careful planning as outfits may

need to be specially made or booked with a costume hire company.

Casual Attire

In New Zealand very formal weddings are quite rare and the majority of grooms choose semi-formal or informal styles. However with increasing numbers of weddings at outdoor venues like the beach or in tropical locations, the more casual attire is becoming increasingly acceptable such as a light weight suit, or trousers with a waistcoat instead of a jacket plus light shirt and tie. Alternatively, open neck shirts are acceptable, often worn “out” rather than tucked in. Most suit hire companies offer a range of coordinating apparel for the groom, best man and groomsmen, as well, as a good selection of sizes from children to adult. Suit hire companies usually keep up with the latest trends and hiring outfits can ensure the wedding party looks good without expense of purchasing suits and formal attire they may not wear again.

Mother

of the bride

You want the “feel good, look good” factor in an outfit that will be photographed and scrutinized throughout the day. So be brave, and let’s go shopping!

T

radition says that the mother of the bride chooses her outfit first, but it’s also become customary to discuss choices with the mother of the groom beforehand if you wish.

Wait until the bride has decided on the wedding style and colour theme so that you can coordinate your outfit accordingly. Look at a dress style that is appropriate to the style of wedding, whether casual, semi formal or formal. The time of day can also dictate whether you wear short, cocktail length or a floor length gown, or whether you wear a hat. Pick a colour range that complements your natural colouring, the season

and the wedding party; You can either select the same general colour palette but a different tone, or go for the diametrically opposite shade on the colour wheel. Alternatively you could select a patterned fabric that highlights the colour of the bridesmaids gowns or go for a neutral outfit with colourful accessories. Find a design that flatters your shape, size and personal taste. Be prepared to try styles you have never tried before and invite advice from family, a friend or experienced fashion sales staff. Be aware of “age appropriateness: — nothing too short, too low cut, too tight and never wear white — that’s the bride’s prerogative! Look for gorgeous, but also for wearability — your outfit needs to be comfortable, breathable, crease resistant, and not ride up or slip down. If you are unsure of the weather, consider a jacket, bolero, shrug, wrap or sleeves and make sure your outfit will let you sit, stand, walk and dance without fear! Select your dress according to your budget. It may be once in a lifetime couture, or versatile enough to wear again in the future.

Your ONE STOP LUXURY FASHION BOUTIQUE for all special occasions

If you need to keep costs down, buy in the sales, choose a simple dress off the rack and dress it up with accessories. Alternatively, if you already have a favourite everyday item in your wardrobe, get it pattern drafted and made in a fabulous fabric for the wedding. Accessories can make or break an outfit, so take care with shoes, bag, hat and jewellery. Less is usually more and a single statement item will always be classier than the busy look. If you wear a hat, be sure its shape and size balances your height and style of dress and that a large brim doesn’t shade your face in the photographs.

ou will certainly find signature bridesmaid collections while you are looking for your own bridal gown.

The advantage of that is finding a style similar to your own dress, a complementary design or fabric and the fact that the options will be available in a range of sizes and colours. But, if you don’t want to buy bridesmaid dresses that may only be worn once, you could look at hiring them and getting them individually fitted. Don’t overlook fashion shops that stock dresses for evening wear, formals and balls, which are often very affordable. As well as floor length gowns, cocktail length has become very popular, while day wear dresses are short and sassy. Choose styles and colours to flatter the size and body shape of your bridesmaids — they’ll love you for it.

How do I findd a celebrant?

Coastal

Ceremonies BEV WEBER

Specialising in all wedding and civil union ceremonies Ensuring your special ceremony is everything you wish it to be

Y

ou need to feel comfortable with the person you have chosen to be your wedding celebrant because they will play an important role on your wedding day. To find the right celebrant, you could try asking your friends and family to recommend someone. It’s a good idea to meet with your prospective celebrant first before you ask them to take on the role. You’ll need to allow yourself enough time for ‘shopping around’ in case the first celebrant you meet is not a ‘good fit’ with you. If you decide you don’t like them after meeting with them, or don’t know anyone suitable, you can search the Celebrants’ Association of New Zealand website or the Births, Deaths and Marriages website.

How much can I expect to pay for a marriage celebrant’s services? Celebrants can charge anywhere from about $150 up to $800 – or more (and you may even find one who’ll do it for free). It can vary depending on where you are in New Zealand, the amount of experience the celebrant has had, the length of the ceremony and how much you want them to do for you. For example, apart from the basic ceremony the fee may include:  Providing you with readings and the wording of your vows.  Attending rehearsals of the ceremony.  Coordinating with the photographer or videographer.  Travel costs.

Cross cultural

Weddings

New Zealand is renowned for having a rich multi cultural and ethnic diversity, with Maori, Asian and Pacific groups making up a growing proportion of the population. It’s no wonder then that statistics show cross-cultural marriages are on the rise.

H

owever, while love is far more than skin deep, the meeting of two cultures in marriage can test even the most devoted of couples. Susan Evan’s parents wanted her brother Peter to tie the knot in NewZealand. However his fiance’s parents wanted them to marry in her native China.“My new sister in law had a lot of pressure from her parents to get married and they definitely wanted a traditional Chinese ceremony”, says Susan.“My brother didn’t care, but his family over here wanted a ceremony. In the end they had two weddings: one in NewZealand and one in China.” The couple married here in a registry office before celebrating at a local restaurant. In China the nuptials included a traditional tea ceremony. In this, the couple kneel or bow to heaven and earth, their parents and ancestors and to each other and the bride presents tea to relatives in order of seniority.

both parties are from the same cultural background.

“Both families were happy and absolutely nothing of either tradition has been lost,”says Susan.

With around 70,000 Maori/non-Maori relationships in NewZealand, maraes are also seeing more multicultural marriages.

Other couples combine NewZealand customs with older traditions, even if

A traditional Maori ceremony includes the Powhiri (traditional welcome) Mihimihi

“The new generation want to take control of their own weddings so they in corporate NewZealand and Samoan traditions”says Elaine Tagi, whose sister Helen was married in a Samoan wedding several years ago.“In the past, parents would have paid for everything but now couples can afford their own celebrations so can make their own decisions.” Helen followed sacred Samoan rites leading up to the ceremony, then had a big Christian service. In a traditional Samoan wedding, the bride’s family provide fine mats and tapa cloth to the bridegroom and many marriages came about purely from the desire to get good mats. Helen and her husband combined this tradition with another Samoan tradition of giving presents to guests who have gifted the couple by giving mats to families and friends after the ceremony.

(traditional greetings) and the Hakari (sharing of food to complete the relationship formed). Traditional infinity loops are also placed around couple’s necks to represent eternal love. So there is plenty of scope to combine cultural traditions on the day — adding extra excitement to an already glorious occasion.

sually, by the time the couple decide to get married, everyone has adjusted to the new dynamic. Still, some delicacy is required in presenting the news.

These days, families where one or both partners have children from a previous relationship are common.

Some argue that your children should be the first to be told that you are getting married. But this has to be weighed against the fact that some former partners may not enjoy hearing the news second hand, in which case it may be advisable to tell them first and then tell the children quickly after.

unknown for either or both to attend the wedding. However, no-one wants awkward moments at their wedding so it is probably best to veer on the side of caution, although young children might want their other parent to be there. Having your children at your wedding does make it a particularly joyous and bonding celebration, especially of you include them in the ceremony such as flower girl or ring bearer.

When you do tell your children, it is normally more comfortable coming from the parent rather than their partner.

Whatever way you approach it, there is many a wedding photo featuring a smiling couple surrounded by happy children.

Hopefully former partners and former inlaws take the news well, and it has not been

And remember, children do believe in happy endings!

R Rings

A

t this stage, few couples give thought to the wedding rings, often leaving that purchase until closer to the wedding. While this is good for the pocket, it does pay to have an idea of the wedding ring you want when shopping for the engagement ring.

Consider if you will want to wear the engagement ring and the wedding ring together. If so, they will have to not only fit comfortably together on your finger but also complement each other. Most brides choose the same metals, but yellow and white gold can also look good.

Rings-settings Styles of rings and setting come in and out of fashion, but you may find a particular design suits the shape of your hand or your lifestyle, regardless or current popularity.

Prong setting:

The stone or stones are held by prongs that are curved over the rim of the gem. As most of its facets are visible in this type of setting, light shines through it and increases sparkle.

Channel setting:

A line of stones is set flush between two strips of metal, which secures the stones effectively and prevents extra wear and tear.

ou have just be When you become engaged, dfi adorning your third finger with the rock of your dreams is top of a girl’s priority list.

If the setting and style of your engagement ring is very detailed, a plainer wedding band will offset it better. If you are planning to wear your wedding ring on its own, you may want something more interesting than a plain band. Jewellers report that wedding rings with stone settings are now more often requested than plain settings. Also consider if you want “his and hers” rings that give a nod to each other’s design to reflect your romantic bond. You can also request for your rings to be engraved, with the wedding date and initials or something personal to you both.

Pave setting:

Has lots of sparkle because the ring’s surface is covered in many tiny stones which make up the overall design. Currently a very popular style.

Bezel setting:

Used frequently for solitaire and large stones, the gem stone is circled by a metal or `rub over’ rim that holds the stone in place and protects its edges.

Metals

Gold has been the most enduring choice for wedding bands because of its value and longevity. However white gold, platinum and titanium have all become popular in contemporary times.

Whatever the preference, the wedding ring should match the engagement ring in style, colour and shape. The giving and/or receiving of a ring at the wedding ceremony is a custom of many cultures and formally seals the marriage. Symbolically, the unbroken shape of the ring recognises the unbreakable vows of marriage and is intended to be worn for a lifetime. Therefore, when purchasing engagement and wedding rings, be sure to buy from a reputable jeweller, get certificates of valuation and always insure your rings against loss and theft.

n the past betrothal rings confirmed to the bride's family that the groom's intentions were honourable and publicly declared the couple's intention to marry.

Traditionally engagement rings were diamonds, but fashion trends have made coloured stones, birthstones and other gems popular. The skill of the jeweller can create an almost unlimited range of designs and shapes to suit the age, style and budget of the wearer. Cut, colour, clarity and carat (weight) determine the quality of the gem and Lapidary refers to the carious techniques used to make a raw gemstone more attractive, from simple polishing to cuts or facts to achieve style, shape or brilliance.

rides often focus on the dress and leave thoughts about accessories until the last minute.

But the accessories can really lift a look so it pays o plan in advance.

Much, much more than the engagement ring Drop in to view our engagement and matching wedding rings for both bride and groom, plus a selection of quality diamond and pearl jewellery ideal for bridal accessories and that very special gift for the Mother of the Bride.

The key to bridal accessories is that they should draw the eyes to the dress rather than overpower. If the dress is simple and elegant, you can be more daring with jewellery and accessories. Pearl necklaces and earrings are a classic and timeless look. Sparkles look amazing against white and Swarovski have elegant stunning sets. Do not over do the bling - think Grace Kelly not Kim Kardashian. If the dress is already ornate with beading and sequins then there is less need for adornment. Consider your hairstyle on the day when choosing earrings. If wearing hair up, longer earrings suit. But if you have a very curly do, small diamond or pearly studs will look best. Another trend is coloured jewels matching a coloured shoe - again Swarovski has amazing sets with turquoise and green coloured stones.

hoosing your wedding hairstyle should always depend on what suits your face shape and type of hair, but also complement the level of formality and the style of your gown.

Whether you decide to crop it, top it, or let it loose, it should be flattering, manageable, look good in photos and last for hours without causing you grief or disappointment. Long hair is often favoured because it adapts to so many different styles. You can leave it loose and flowing for a casual beach

or tropical wedding, create a soft `up do’ for semi formal or informal ceremonies or an elegant chignon for classic and formal weddings. Overtaking top knots and high styled curls, new styles for long hair that are currently in vogue include the low `ballerina’ bun or nape of the neck coils and twists. Braiding has become popular again, weaving varied hair lengths into a cohesive style off the face as well as being resistent to wind gusts. Short bobs and pixie cuts can be very flattering and suit a small or oval face shape without being overwhelming. They need to be precision cut and possibly highlighted to give the optimum depth and shine. But how about trying a new vintage hairstyle? Recapture the 20s and 30s with a gorgeous finger wave that transforms an everyday short cut into an elegant and feminine bridal look.

Caci Clinic Soul Mates

I

t’s the lead up to your big day, and most of the major planning is complete. The wedding gown has been chosen, invitations addressed and bridesmaid’s dresses ordered. Everything on your list has got the big tick... But don’t sigh with relief just yet! There’s one more item that needs to be added to the list – your face. By following the Caci Clinic simple six-month programme you’ll be sure to put your best face forward on your big day.

Six months to go:

By beginning six-months out, you will be able to budget for treatments and new products. Here are some of the treatments a Caci Clinic expert may recommend.

Uneven skin tone, dull complexion: A course of beauty therapy including advanced skin treatments such as

Microdermabrasion, Glycolic Peels or tailored facials.

Broken blood vessels, dark skin spots:

A light treatment known as Photo Rejuvenation may be suitable. Several sessions spaced at least three weeks apart are required for optimal results so start as soon as possible. Caci’s 48week Reformaskin treatment has also been specifically designed to treat these problems.

Fine lines and wrinkles:

If you’re interested in treating lines and wrinkles with a non-surgical procedure such as Botox, six-months prior to your wedding is ideal. As Botox lasts between three-four months you can see whether you like the results before your big day.

One week to go:

If you have been having facial treatments leading up to the wedding then one final treatment a week before your wedding should not be a problem as you will know exactly how your skin reacts. Be wary of trying anything new this close to your big day.

The night before:

Remember, don’t try anything new, follow your normal skincare routine and your weekly care such as an exfoliant and mask (ensuring it is one that does not cause you to break out).

On the day:

On the big day carry out your regular skin care routine and enjoy the results of your previous months of dedicated skincare. Leave the rest up to the makeup artist and enjoy the day!

BEAUTIFUL BRIDE look your best for your big day Ask Caci how you can look photo ready for the big event. Caci offer tailored programmes to suit your skin’s individual needs, hair removal options, Murad facials, microdermabrasion and beauty therapy treatments. Caci can help you to look and feel your best.

Countdown

10 — 12 weeks before.

Visit your hairdresser for a cut, style, colour and conditioning, and take your wedding head gear with you to discuss your plans. Book in for a facial with a beauty therapist and begin nail care treatment with manicurist or invest in quality DIY nail products 8 — 9 weeks before. Exercise regularly and begin any weight loss or timing programme. Assess your diet, increase water intake, eat more fresh produce daily and take multi - vitamins if you need them. Stock up on skin care and cosmetic products.

Every bride wants that well groomed flawless look, but it requires attention to skin, nails, teeth, diet exercise and plenty of sleep for several weeks before the wedding.

4 — 7 weeks before.

Begin skin exfoliation especially if your gown is off the shoulder or strapless. Have a trial make-up session. Book in for a facial, hair trim and continue with nail care. Visit your dentist for a check up, clean and polish. Arrange for bridesmaids to visit the hairdresser to discuss or try out styles.

2 — 3 weeks before.

Confirm all hair and makeup bookings for your wedding day. Have a relaxing body and/or foot massage. Give your hair a good conditioning treatment.

Continue nail care and exercise programme. Book a light spray tan.

1 week before.

Have leg, underarm and bikini line wax. Complete final manicure, pedicure and have eyebrows shaped. Get plenty of sleep and relaxation. Prepare a makeup “touch up” kit for the wedding. Pamper yourself at a spa or massage clinic.

Wedding day.

Allow plenty of time for the hairdresser. Buff and polish nails. Clean teeth and freshen breath. Finish makeup yourself or with a professional, aiming for a soft, flattering effect that will last the day and look superbly natural in the photographs.

Invitations A wedding invitation is the first hint your guests have on the theme for your wedding, so if you want to, you can incorporate your overall look, even at this early stage.

T

he invitation establishes the mood and tone of your wedding. Beautifully crafted invitations are often treasured as keepsakes and novelty invitations like jigsaws and e-cards are an innovative option. Decide on the type of atmosphere you want your invitation to create — fun and sassy or classical and elegant, and allow your imagination free reign.

The invitation should also set the tone for the formality of the ceremony, and should be representative of both the bride and groom. Invitations are traditionally sent from whom ever is hosting the occasion, usually the bride’s parents. On a more practical note, there are several traditional ways of wording the invitation, as

notice, with the RSVP (reply) no less than two weeks before the event.

In addition to wedding invitations, you may wish to consider thank-you notes, place cards and Order of the Service sheets which inform guests on the precise order of each aspect of the wedding service. Count the number of invitations needed, remembering couples usually only need one invitation. Children who live away from home, and those over 18 years, should receive their own invite.

Discuss your requirements with your chosen printer, and make sure you order your invitations three months before the wedding.

Don’t skimp on ordering and add 10 — 15 more invitations to the total to save high costs later if you need a few more for any last minute additions.Etiquette demands that you give guests at least six week’s

The

Photographer A wedding photographer is an expensive item on a wedding budget, but it is a very worthwhile investment to ensure you have beautiful memories of your day.

C

hoosing a photographer comes down to personal taste. Most will have their portfolios online and you can see which style you like.

When meeting with prospective photographers, make a check list: Discuss your venue — are they familiar with it? Will they know the best spots and backdrops are there any challenges with it? Lighting for example? Ask to look at albums

Agree on a contract which stipulates what your chosen package includes. Include a backup plan if the photographer is sick.

What do they suggest for poses?

There should be good rapport with the photographer because you trust them and feel relaxed with them, this will translate into the photos.

You need to consider what you want recorded. If you have requests for particular groups, bring them along.

Photos that you love, recording the biggest day of your life will then be archived forever in a beautiful album.

What will happen if it rains? How long will the photos take?

INFO@DAWNDUTTON.CO.NZ (09) 432 2497 021 623 607 WWW.DAWNDUTTON.CO.NZ

Some of the best photos are not posed group shots, but more impromptu recordings of the day. Some wedding photographers offer “all day” packages to tell the story of the day from the bridal party getting ready, capturing the groom’s face when he first sees the bride, right through to the first dance.

Catering When choosing the menu for your wedding reception, you’ll be factoring in the time of day, guest numbers, the location, the style of the wedding and your budget.

Buffet.

An ever popular style allowing for a variety of food to be presented for a variety of appetites. Be guided by the caterer as to the number of dishes you will need for the number of guests, who generally help themselves from a long tabled buffet. Handy hint: to avoid crowding the buffet table at smaller venues try a“floating buffet” where large platters are brought to seated guests who serve themselves.

Self catering.

Barbeque, picnic or buffet, this low key style can stretch the budget as you can buy in bulk or BYO with family and friends.

It does take organisation however and can be“time expensive” in terms of purchase and preparation. Handy hint: hire a chiller trailer to store fresh salads, meats, desserts and cold drinks

Canapes

A sophisticated and often cost effective option, a canapé/bowl selection is great for a mid or late afternoon cocktail wedding. Ideally cater 5 or 6 different canapés for a 2 hour reception or about 9 canapes for a reception lasting 4 hours. Ensure your guests know it isn’t a full course dinner. Handy hint: it’s the fashion to serve canapé food for guests standing at table leaners, but older guests need seats.

Plated menu.

This is a seated meal of 3 — 5 courses and a more expensive catering option that also requires table staff. Usually there is a choice of 2 or 3 dishes per course, allowing for taste preferences and special dietary requirements. Handy hint: space the various courses of the meal both for the enjoyment of the guests and realistic cooking and serving times for the caterers.

While a celebratory cake was traditionally provided as a symbol of fertility. Modern cakes have become custom made confections with perfection as the main ingredient.

C

ouples can choose almost any flavor or combination of flavours to match the size or style of the wedding. Traditional rich fruit cake is less popular and often outshone by popular chocolate, lemon and banana.

Each layer of a tiered cake can be different or a tower of mini cakes, cupcakes or profiterole can form a mouth watering centre piece. Frequently the cake is served as a dessert, with tantalizing combinations such as raspberry and white chocolate, marbled mud cake, tiramisu or a tropical fruit torte. Alternatively the cake can be served as an afternoon tea, as a sweet treat alongside canapés and champagne or as a supper with coffee, tea, port or brandy.

Once the culinary masterpiece has been made, the artistry of the decoration begins. Whether classic, modern, fun, funky, sculpted, shaped, piled, painted or piped, the icing can reflect almost any colour scheme of theme. There’s nothing like a wedding cake for visual impact! Wedding cakes usually need to be ordered 3 — 5 months before the big day. Most companies have catalogues of cake styles and offer tastings. Ensure the cake size is adequate for the number of guests and compare costs for cake making, decoration and delivery before making a confirmed booking.

By www.brideandgroom.co.nz

When you’re choosing a cake, shop around. Ask to see pictures of finished wedding cakes and references from satisfied customers. If a traditional fruit cake is not your thing, consider choosing your favourite flavour instead or a combination of different flavours.

Things to consider  How many cake flavours do they offer?  How many filling flavours do they offer?  How many cake combinations?  How many different cake packages?  Is tasting, delivery, set-up and cake boxes included in the total price of the cake?  Can they incorporate decorative elements, such as flowers, colours, bows and beading?

he setting for your wedding reception is at the heart of your planning. When choosing your reception venue, you need to take several considerations into account, such as the number of guests, your budget and theme, its proximity to the ceremony venue and the time of day you

wish to have your reception. Before securing a booking, you might like to dine at one or more possible venues and take note of the décor and atmosphere, standard of food and service, and value for money. Make sure you request a detailed estimate and a confirmation of your booking in writing.

Things to consider  Is there a minimum cost or number of guests?  Is GST included in the total price?  Is set-up and clearing included in the price?  Is it fully licensed or BYO?  Do they offer package deals including food and beverages and/or decorations?  Are there reduced rates for weekday, Sunday or off-peak weddings?  How flexible is the menu?  Are you happy with their china, cutlery, glassware, tablecloths and napkins?  Do they supply a cake stand and special knife for cutting the cake?  Is there on-site accommodation for the guests?  Organise someone to collect your gifts after the reception.

The islands are an internationally recognized icon, up for World Heritage Status and have been voted in the Top Ten must-do experiences in New Zealand by New Zealanders, 23kms off the Tutukaka Coast where the island’s 11 million year old volcanic origins provide myriad spectacular drop offs, walls, caves, arches and tunnels, all inhabited by an amazing array of underwater life. A

venue spring with New Zealand’s fickle wedding v enue in s ng wi could leave you with the dilemma of where to weather c w ld lea marry. rry. G Getting married in the great outdoors means spec special consideration needs to be given to the weather - hot, cold, wet, dry, windy - and a Plan B developed ‘in case’. Some shade/shelter should be provided and seating for older guests, at least, will be required. Access to the wedding site needs to be fairly straightforward. A lengthy tramp through the bush to that favourite clearing next to a babbling brook may not be a good idea; nor is clambering over rocks or down a steep path to a sandy beach. Save those locations as the venue for a special picnic to celebrate your first wedding anniversary, or other significant milestone in your life. And while a garden wedding can be lovely, consider where guests will park their vehicles. If you aim for a beach wedding check with the local council for any rules or regulations in force. A church wedding - church weddings with all the trimmings are now back in vogue - eliminates most weather, parking and access issues but may raise other issues. Some clergy insist a couple are members of the congregation, or both parties are of the same denomination, or that they attend pre-marriage counselling with the church. Plan your wedding style according to taste, budget and the size of the guest list. This last point is very important. Unless your guest list is limited to 50 or under, your wedding is unlikely to be small and cosy, if that was what you were wanting. Keep in mind that the exact date of your wedding may be determined by the availability of a reception venue. Book early. Most weddings in New Zealand are during spring and summer, with February the most popular month. This often means many venues are fully booked more than a year in advance. Your garden wedding can extend to holding the reception in the garden as well. This will mean hiring a marquee and tables and chairs, as well as finding a caterer willing to come on site. The style of reception will depend on the style of your wedding. A formal wedding calls for a formal reception, possibly with wait staff and a set menu with a carefully organised seating plan. A less formal affair might mean buffet service with guests finding their own seating. The really casual wedding could involve a barbecue-style reception, or an elaborate picnic affair. Potential venues include a marquee, local hall decorated for the occasion, reception lounge, function room at a hotel, restaurant, mobile barbecue at a favourite spot, or a catered picnic. If you plan to follow the wedding breakfast with music and dancing, take this into account when choosing your venue.

Top tips

Discuss your requirements with your travel agent/ consultant and make sure you know exactly what is included in your wedding package and any additional costs involved. Ask for confirmation and package details in writing. Some countries require you to have your certificates legalised. This can be done through the foreign and commonwealth office. Your wedding co-ordinator will be able to tell you of any additional requirements. These may include obtaining a letter from a notary public member proving your single status.

If considering a wedding overseas, if you still want family and friends to join you, you want to make it affordable for them.

A travel agent is a good first point of call. Many have wedding liaison specialists. Go with an idea of your budget,

and they can help you shortlist your locations. Overseas venues - particularly in the Pacific Islands - offer a range of wedding packages which vary not only in price but in what is offered, ranging from a basic ceremony, to a lavish full package with photos, food, flowers and even costumes for you and local entertainment. Some resorts will even offer the wedding for free, provided you book a certain amount of accommodation. Using a good travel agents wedding service is also useful to make sure you have the correct documentation to register the wedding according to local law. Then all you need to worry about is packing your wedding dress and bikini. Once you reach your tropical rendezvous, you are sure to fall in love all over again.

The

Honeymoon

Holidaying together somewhere relaxing and exotic remains the dream of many newlyweds, but honeymoon and wedding traditions are certainly changing, say Northland travel agents.

I

t used to be the norm that while the bride’s family plans the wedding, the groom plans and pays for the honeymoon.

But now there is a growing trend for friends and family to contribute to the cost of honeymoons. Many travel agents offer a honeymoon specialist who not only offers who not only helps choose a dream location within budget but can also arrange a registry. Instead of wedding gifts, guests can contribute to the cost of the trip.

Another change in tradition is the time couples depart on honeymoon. Traditionally the happy couple is waved off to the airport straight after the reception. Now it is more common to leave a gap. This enables couples to fully enjoy the wedding ceremony. Guests may have travelled from far afield for the wedding, so it is only polite to spend more time with them.

Other couples prefer to leave a gap depending on seasons and where they are going. People who marry in New Zealand in the summer delay the honeymoon until our winter months when they then take off to a sunny climate. As for the honeymoon hotspots for Kiwi newlyweds, the South Pacific islands of Fiji, Rarotonga, Samoa and Vanuatu remain popular as romantic destinations. They are also appealing for wedding packages with the honeymoon being the perfect add-on. For many Kiwis just heading on honeymoon isn’t enough — increasingly we are now taking family and friends with us, getting married on South Pacific beaches any time of the year, solving all sorts of seasonal challenges with venues and having a fantastic time together. This is becoming increasingly popular with second marriages, or for those just wanting to escape with close friends.

Speeches S T

raditionally, there are three speeches at a wedding, given by the father of the bride, the groom and the bestman, in that order. It’s now not uncommon for others in the bridal party and the couple’s family – such as the bride, chief bridesmaid or parents of the groom – to say a few words, too. The speeches are usually given after the meal before the cutting of the cake or between different courses.

Father of the bride’s speech

The primary aim of this speech is to talk about the bride with affection and praise. The bride’s father may share a couple of anecdotes about the bride’s childhood and adolescence. He should welcome the groom to the family and talk about the newlywed’s secure and happy future. To conclude the speaker proposes a toast to the bride and groom.

Father of the groom’s speech

Similar to the speech of the father of the bride, this is your turn to talk about your son, welcome your new daughter, and wish them well for the future. In your speech you might like to thank the previous speaker, compliment the newly married couple, welcome the bride and her parents to the family, offer an anecdote about the groom, and finish with a toast to the bride and groom.

Groom’s speech

The groom should speak on behalf of himself and his wife, although more and more brides are choosing to add their own voice to the occasion. The groom should thank the first speaker for the toast and pay tribute to the people who have raised his bride. This is often followed by him thanking his own parents for their love and support. He may choose to talk about how he met his beloved and then briefly outline the couple’s intentions over the coming years. It is important that he ends by thanking the hosts of the wedding and the guests for their support and attendance. In closing he thanks all those who have helped with the wedding and proposes a toast to the bridesmaids and pageboys.

Bestman’s speech

Here the tone can change from serious to fun and witty, but the bestman must be careful not to descend into bad taste. He

should begin by thanking the groom for his toast to the bridesmaids and pageboys and then offering his sincere congratulations to the newlyweds. He then has the opportunity to recount a few anecdotes from the groom’s past and, if the groom did not mention how he first met his bride, the bestman is at liberty to do so. He should propose a toast to absent friends and read out any greeting cards, emails and telegrams. Once these have been read he announces the cutting of the cake.

Chief bridesmaid’s speech

The bride’s leading lady may like to offer a few words, which can be more relaxed and conversational in tone. After thanking the previous speaker and complimenting the bride and groom, you may like to recount a story about the bride, or an experience you shared together. The bride or bride’s mother may also like to make a speech or toast.

Writing a speech

Find out approximately how much time the couple would like you to speak for – five minutes is usually enough. Jot down all the things you would like to say and then group them according to type and subject matter. You should start to see which points are most important and from there you can derive a logical progression to create a framework. Break your speech up into titled sections such as ’praise daughter’, ’incident

with the swing and the cat’, ’welcome groom’, and ’propose toast’. Prepare numbered cue cards, one per section title. If it helps, list a few key words as a prompt but don’t write out the entire speech or learn it off by heart – sincerity is best achieved through spontaneity and a smile.

Top tips

Prepare your speech well in advance and remember that practice makes perfect. Structure your speech well by ensuring it has a beginning, middle and end. Begin with thank-yous, follow with anecdotes, and finish with a toast. Don’t drink too much alcohol before your speech – you don’t want to be slurring your words! Take a deep breath before beginning, stand tall and don’t rush – take your time and speak clearly. Avoid saying ’um’ and ’er.’ If you need to gather your thoughts, don’t be afraid to pause for a few moments. For those who are not accomplished after-dinner speakers the trick is to be sincere and concise. Finish on a positive note with a heart-felt comment.

R

egardless of the style and venue of the ceremony, a wedding should be a memorable occasion of dignity and celebration. Enhanced by your choice of vows, blessings, music, readings or prayers, a wedding ceremony should have special meaning for the bridal couple.

Wedding ceremonies can be religious or civil, in accordance with the couple’s preferences and beliefs. However, for any marriage in New Zealand, there are certain legal requirements that must be adhered to. If you choose to marry overseas, you must comply with the marriage laws of that country, including your legal entitlement to marry there.

In New Zealand:

 The Minister or Marriage Celebrant must

be licenced to conduct marriages.

 The marriage must take place between

6am and 10pm.

 The Marriage must be witnessed by two

people.

 The full names of the couple are used

during the ceremony.

 Divorce from a previous marriage must be

absolute.

 The couple must be over 18 or have

parental consent if aged 16 or 17.

A Marriage Licence must be obtained from the Department of Internal Affairs Births Deaths and Marriages Office. As well as a Marriage Licence fee, you must complete a notice of intention to marry including the full names and ages of the couple, their parents’ particulars, where the marriage will take place and the name of the Minister or Celebrant. Today, marriages take place in churches, registry offices, reception venues, gardens, and private homes, as well as on beaches, on boats and at parks! Regardless of venue, most ceremonies have three phases; opening statements, vows and exchange of rings, and a blessing or closing statement. Each phase may have its own ceremonial

features such as music, readings, poems, candle lighting, prayers and special family or cultural traditions. While traditional vows are still popular, increasing numbers of couples choose to write their own words to make the ceremony more personal and relevant to their lives together. Meanwhile here’s a few facts you may find interesting and sometimes surprising: Registry Office ceremonies are not open to the public. There is no legal requirement that a ceremony before a marriage celebrant be open to the public. Your marriage license is valid for just three months from the date on which it is issued. There is no limitation on what day, or where you can be married, as long as the ceremony is conducted by a registered marriage celebrant or a minister of a church. Couples may change the form of their relationship between civil unions and marriages.
