Who's Who in Kamo

MAY 2022

THE SAME BUT DIFFERENT Kamo has always been a busy, bustling place.

2

Kamo is a busy and bustling place every day of the week. There is always something on, people going places, or things to see in the suburb. So what does a typical day in Kamo look like? Perhaps it would start at one of the gyms near Kamo’s centre. There are a few to choose from, like the newest gym tennant, Whangarei Boxing Gym on Grant Street, where the sounds of boxing bags being punched echo around the room. Or as you

look into Extraordinary Studio, which stands predominantly on the Kamo Road corner, you’ll see it busy with movement early on weekday mornings. Trish Tucker who owns Extraordinary Studio loves the thriving Kamo village and says she doesn’t have to go far after her morning workouts. “Most mornings start with a fun workout in our little fitness studio, then you will often find us grabbing a coffee and snack from

Milk and Honey or Sushi,” Trish says. Trish isn’t the only one. Kamo becomes more alive as the morning hours tick by and the hustle and bustle builds. For many the next stop (or possibly the first) is a coffee from one of the local cafes on the way to school or work. With a number of schools within walking distance, as well as plenty of work places around Kamo central, it is usually buzzing from the start of the workday.

From then it doesn’t stop. With all sorts of shops and services, the buzz continues throughout the day as workers get to work, students get to school and residents and visitors do things like get their hair done, get their vehicle warrants, get a car sound system installed, go to a beauty appointment, do their laundry, shop for new or second hand things, sit and eat, or grab takeaways, come and go from the shared path, or visit the library.

Trish loves how everything is so central and handy. “The Four Square is great if you aren’t keen on a trip to town, or if you need a last minute gift Kamo Gifts & Bookshop is your go to, or David’s Pharmacy,” Trish says. Kamo resident and business owner Jason Milich agrees. “What I do like about Kamo is how we’ve got pretty much everything here within a few hundred metres, and the residents are really supportive of locally owned businesses,” Jason says. As the day continues, the after school and after work activities kick in. Perhaps it is Girl Guides or Scouts for the kids, a yoga session at The Loft or pilates at Base Body. Or one of the many sports training sessions at the various venues around Kamo. You’ll often find Kamo resident Micheal Buchanan at the fields watching his boys play soccer, or walking the dog.

“It is great that the kids can enjoy sport so close to home, and they have been playing with the same group of kids in their Kamo team for years,” Micheal says. The evenings in Kamo are still a buzz. Restaurants like Shiraz, Pimarn Thai or Turkuaz get busy, and the streets fill with people on their way to eat or to collect takeaways. Perhaps after a busy day, a drink at one of the local pubs with family or friends might be what you are after. Or if it’s Friday evening you might join in the fun of the circus arts outside the Kamo Memorial Hall. Then, as the busy and bustling Kamo streets get darker and quieter at the end of the day, the suburb settles into sleep knowing the buzz will all happen again tomorrow.

YOU ONLY DEI ONCE

YOU LIVE EVERYDAY

Kiwis aren’t great at putting money away for a rainy day. While some of us do manage to save money for the good things in life such as holidays or weddings, planning for funerals is often not even considered, and yet it’s the certain life event we’ll all face. As funeral experts we see first-hand the difficulty families faces when it comes to honouring a loved one - funeral options, choices and costs can be daunting. If we could only give you one piece of expert advice, it would be to take the pressure off your family by pre-planning your funeral. Plan today and get on with living your life to the full. You may have had a conversation with your loved ones about your wishes, but those dinner chats years ago might not come to mind when it matters most - and what if the children each have a different recollection of that chat? It happens more often than you think. Pre-planning allows you to be involved in the choices about your final farewell. From decisions such as cremation or burial, to the form of service or the music you would prefer, you can record your preferences as a guide for your family. We would like to see more families concentrating on celebrating a life and positively grieving the loss, rather than worrying about the details of funeral planning. Alongside pre-planning, we encourage people to pre-pay their funeral. As well as taking the financial strain off your loved ones, there are strong fiscal reasons for putting aside funds in a pre-paid funeral plan.

When thinking about the cost of a funeral, many people say they aren’t worried as they presume the proceeds of selling their house will cover it, however there are two reasons this isn’t such a great plan. Firstly, the settlement of an estate and subsequent sale of a property can take many, many months. Can those you love afford to pay for the funeral while they wait for your house funds to come through? Secondly, many of us spend our latter years in a retirement village or residential care facility rather than in our own home. The funds from the sale of the family home can get eaten up by the cost of that care, leaving uncertainty about what amount would be left to fund a funeral. Alternatively, if you pre-pay your funeral, and if the need later arose for long-term residential care in a rest home or hospital, the value of that pre paid funeral, up to $10,000, is excluded from the Government’s financial means assessment for the residential care subsidy. In basic terms, this means up to $10,000 that you might otherwise have been forced

to spend on subsidising your care, can be set aside for your funeral so your family have one less thing to worry about when the time comes. Which way would you rather spend your $10,000? The FDANZ Funeral Trust is run by professional managers who responsibly invest your money. You can pay either in a lump sum or by instalments chosen by you. In addition, any excess funds will be returned to your estate. The person most able to help you to work through the options is your FDANZ funeral director. They can help you consider all aspects of your pre arrangement. Regardless of the type of funeral people plan, it is important to plan a funeral that allows those who are grieving the ability to say goodbye to their loved ones. A meaningful funeral farewell helps positive grieving.

Living Life in Full Colour You don’t have to be in the car painting business as long as Stacey Nicholson to know that there are only 3 primary colours. He does, however, also know that it’s what you do with those 3 colours that’s important - one subtle change and you’re painting in a completely different hue. Interestingly, Stacey hasn’t always been able to see in every colour, in fact when he was in primary school they found out he was unable to see black on white. Which of course affected his ability to read.

Because of this Stacey knows the struggles that can come from a learning disability, but he has never let his difficult start to learning stop him from achieving in life. He did eventually grow out of his form colour blindness but it set him back years and really hit his self esteem hard. School became a struggle and at 16 an amazing opportunity arose for him to join Cottrell & Ross Car Painters. He knew it was

his big break and put everything he had into learning the trade. He stayed there for 9 years before another fantastic opportunity came up for him to better his skills in restoration, working directly under Tony Gordon at Tony Gordon Panel and Paint. After producing multiple show winning cars there he finally worked up his confidence to start his own business. The struggle was real - he started

out while on a mortgage holiday and borrowing $5,000 from the bank. 8 years later Stacey is still going strong and wants to inspire young people and their parents. School grades don’t always paint the full picture of what a person is capable of. Sometimes you need to take a risk, believe in yourself and be determined to paint the world in your own colours.
