OUR STORY BEGAN IN 1968.

YOURS You always know NKU students when you see them. They’re serious and dedicated, of course. They want to be here, and they study hard.

Whether you’re still choosing a path, or you know exactly what lies ahead, Northern Kentucky University will help light your way.

But it’s more than that. You can see a sparkle of determination in their eyes. They’re starting new conversations about real-world issues. They’re taking charge on unprecedented research happening on campus. They’re global thinkers, cultural leaders, independent spirits and community activists. Our students aren’t here to just scratch the surface. They come here with a purpose and a passion—to break ground.

From the moment you step foot on this campus, you’ll become part of the NKU family—a family of more than 60,000 students and alumni who have left their mark on our community, our country and the world.

At NKU, you can create an experience that is just as unique as you are. You’ll be amazed at how much you can fit into just one year on campus. Imagine what you could do with four.

Where will you find your spark?

The 420-acre campus that NKU calls home is nestled perfectly between the hills of Highland Heights, Kentucky, and the bustling Fortune 500 companies of downtown Cincinnati. We’re accessible from four major highways and just 20 minutes from the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport. There’s no shortage of things to do on campus. Study in Steely Library. Grab a bite to eat in the Votruba Student Union. Relax between classes at the outdoor amphitheatre. Read a book on one of the benches surrounding Loch Norse. Join a fitness class at Campus Recreation Center. Cheer on the Norse at BB&T Arena.

ABDULLAH AL-BAHRANI ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ECONOMICS Meet Dr. Abdullah Al-Bahrani, an assistant professor of economics at the Haile/US Bank College of Business. You can call him Dr. A. When you walk into Dr. A’s classroom on the first day of class, he wants to know your expectations of him as a professor. He’s going to teach you economics, of course. He’s going to be available for open office hours when you need help with an assignment, or just to talk. But to Dr. A, it’s much more than a classroom relationship. He wants to guide you during your time at NKU—and beyond. “I’m a mentor first and an educator second,” he says. “My responsibility is to be there for you while you’re in my class, next semester when you go into your other classes, when you’re about to graduate and you need to work on your resume, when you get your first job and you’re negotiating your salary and so on. My goal is to make you a better person for your entire life, not just for this semester.”

OUR FACULTY ARE SOMETHING SPECIAL. Students come to NKU for a variety of reasons, but our faculty are the reason students stay. They’ll push you to look at problems from different perspectives. We’re proud of our 19:1 studentto-faculty ratio, because that means small class sizes. And that means your professors know you by name.

Some students know exactly where their paths lead, but others might not even know where to start, which can make the transition to college seem difficult. But Dr. A says to "take it a day at a time." “When I found what I was passionate about, life just became easier,” he says. “That’s what I want for my students. I want them to find their purpose. Most students have been told that they need to figure out what their goals are right now, but most of them don’t know their goals or what they want to be. What I want to tell them is, ‘You’re not supposed to know what you want to do. That’s why you’re in college. This is where you’re supposed to figure it out.’” ACADEMICS

JACOB MOORE MAJOR: Computer Science MINOR(S): Computer Information Technology HOMETOWN: Independence, Kentucky INTERNSHIP: NASA There’s no doubt that Jacob Moore has been busy in his first two years at NKU. Just as he finished up his freshman year last year, Jacob received a letter that changed his life: You will be an integral part of advancing the NASA mission. “Working for NASA has been a goal of mine from a very young age,” he says. He spent his 10-week internship last summer at NASA’s Goddard Flight and Space Center in Maryland working with the Landsat-8 satellite. Jacob’s success during his internship didn’t go unnoticed. Now he’s interning with NASA again—this time for a year at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. Jacob has enjoyed his time interning for NASA and credits his success to NKU. “The classes are fantastic, but to really get an idea of what lies ahead, you need to get real-world experience,” he says. “NKU offers a wonderful program to support you while you do this.”

If there’s one place where you can always enjoy the hustle and bustle of campus life, it’s the Votruba Student Union. The Votruba Student Union is a fan-favorite building on campus—and not just because of the recent Steak ‘n Shake addition to the food court. The three level, 144,000-square-foot building is home to a large food court, a Starbucks coffee shop, a game room and plenty of lounge spaces for watching TV, getting some homework done, or taking a quick power nap.

There is nowhere on campus you would rather be during a Norse game than the cheering section. It’s noisy. It’s packed. It’s rowdy. But your heart pounds with pride, and you don’t stop cheering until the timer runs out. We send more than 250 student-athletes into competition proudly wearing black and gold. All 17 of our sports teams compete at the NCAA Division I level, and we’re one of 10 teams in the Horizon League. In fact, last year we won the Horizon League tournaments in men's basketball and women's soccer. We were just the seventh team in history to make the NCAA tournament in our first year of eligibility. But even though we’ve won championships, what makes us proud is that our student-athletes are campus leaders. They know how to give it their all on and off the court.

JESSICA FREY MAJOR: Nursing HOMETOWN: Cincinnati, Ohio SPORT: Women’s Soccer “Athletics had a tremendous influence on my decision to come here, but NKU stood out to me for multiple other reasons. There’s a family-like environment where everyone is supportive and friendly. The sense of community among the incredible staff and students is what makes NKU so special. Every professor I have encountered in the nursing program truly cares about the success of each and every student. They are genuinely interested in getting to know me as an individual and not just another face in a classroom.”
