BRIGHT LIGHTS. BIG CITY. We’re just minutes from downtown Cincinnati. It’s no surprise that many of our students say our location played a role in their choice to come to NKU. The 420-acre campus that NKU calls home is nestled perfectly between the hills of Highland Heights, Kentucky, and the bustling Fortune 500 companies of downtown Cincinnati. You get the best of both worlds; a comprehensive education in a safe, suburban setting. We’re neighbors with an innovative, inspiring city—Cincinnati. Catch a Reds game at Great American Ballpark. Take in an exhibit at the nearest museum. Eat dinner and do some shopping downtown. Experience a live concert at Riverbend Music Center. Or if roller coasters are more your thing, drive 30 minutes north to Kings Island. Cincinnati is full of fun, exciting activities. But it’s also home to hundreds of employers and entrepreneurs looking for graduates just like you. Whether you’re looking to get an internship or start your career, you have the opportunity to rub elbows with CEOs of several Fortune 500 companies.

TRACY SONGER, M.A. ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN THE COLLEGE OF INFORMATICS Meet Tracy Songer, an assistant professor in the Electronic Media and Broadcasting department. Before coming to NKU to teach courses in media literacy, writing and production management, Songer worked for more than 20 years in the production industry on shows such as DIY’s “Desperate Landscapes” and HGTV’s “My Yard Goes Disney.” She also served as executive producer for Upstream 360 and as a freelance producer in commercial production. Now at NKU, Songer is right where she wants to be. “My favorite part of my job—if you can even call it that,” she says, “is partnering with students and watching them really get what it takes to make it in filmmaking.” She knows attending college for the first time can be confusing and overwhelming, especially for students who are the first in their family to do so. She believes the key to student success, even in those early days of college, is connecting with faculty members who will help keep the passion for learning. Songer is eager to be that professor, and she welcomes students who drop by her office. “My colleagues joke with me about the line outside of my office door,” she laughs. “I stick to the ‘my door is always open’ rule and, thankfully, students take advantage of it!”

OUR FACULTY ARE SOMETHING SPECIAL. Students come to NKU for a variety of reasons, but our faculty are the reason students stay. They’ll push you to look at problems from different perspectives. We’re proud of our 19:1 student-to-faculty ratio, because that means small class sizes. And that means your professors know you by name.

Like so many of the professors at NKU, Songer is dedicated to student success. “Honestly, I hope to spark an eternal sense of curiosity,” she says. “If you’re curious, you can do anything!” But as much as she gives to her students, Songer knows she can only do so much—to really benefit from what NKU offers, students, she feels, need to jump in with both feet. “Be open-minded and get involved,” she says. “Take full advantage of the NKU experience and make Norse Nation your new home. Oh, and please come to class.” ACADEMICS

SAGE BOYERS (’18) MAJOR: Anthropology MINORS: Ancient Civilizations, Native American Studies HOMETOWN: Newport, Kentucky “I came out of my comfort zone and found my home at NKU. I love the feeling of community here. My professors are like family. There are amazing programs and groups here, and people who are willing to go out of their way to help you no matter what. There are so many opportunities to work with faculty that are really meaningful. There are a lot of amazing things that we’re doing at NKU that people should be a part of—it goes beyond campus and into the community.”

NATHAN DE LEE Assistant Professor Physics and Astronomy “Take one class that you don’t know anything about. One of the benefits of general education courses is the opportunity to try out many different things. Oftentimes, students come into college and don’t know what they want to be yet. Our purpose is to give you a series of useful tools that you can assemble together into a wide variety of different paths. We want to prepare you to go out and not just get a job out of college but also give you skills that you can use five, 10, 20 years down the road.”

What also jumped out at me is that there are about 14,000+ students who attend NKU—meaning there are smaller class sizes and more one-on-one interactions with professors and other students. But I think what I love most about NKU is the diversity. There are so many clubs, activities and events going on throughout the year to get involved. There is something for everyone.”

CALEB SCHMITT MAJOR: Nursing HOMETOWN: Fort Thomas, Kentucky “I love the small class sizes at NKU. You don't have too many students in the classroom, so you can intimately interact with your professors. They make a really good effort to go out of their way and carve time out of the day to help you out. I really appreciate the fact that everything comes together early on in a semester, even during that second half of the first semester when you gain skills and experience during clinicals.”

DR. DALE STEPHENSON Dean College of Health Professions “The College of Health Professions is student-centric and focused on teaching and ensuring that students have jobs immediately upon graduation in a myriad of high demand healthcare fields. Having professors who take pride in the work they do makes it easy for you to get to know our faculty who will ultimately become lifelong mentors. Mentoring and nurturing students is extremely important to our faculty – it gives them a sense of pride and joy for what they do and is the foundation for why they choose to work in higher education.”

PARKER KAIN MAJORS: Data Science, Statistics MINORS: Computer Science, Business Informatics HOMETOWN: Cincinnati, Ohio Parker Kain found his home in the Honors College at NKU. “The Honors College was a way for me to step out of my usual comfort areas and explore topics I wouldn’t get to talk about in other classes.” In fact, Parker stepped out of his comfort zone during his sophomore year when he took a class that partnered with local businesses. His team worked with Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center on a project that involved children who had been diagnosed with an Acute Kidney Injury, which can develop into Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)—a potentially fatal diagnosis. “Our group was tasked with looking at the hospital’s data to determine what factors put children at risk to develop CKD. Over the course of the 16-week course, we traveled to Children’s to meet with doctors, received coaching from our professors and eventually presented our findings to a doctor at Children’s. This project was extremely fulfilling, both for allowing me to work on my technical skills, but also to work with a local company doing a project that felt like it mattered.” Parker’s experiences both in and out of the classroom have led him to complete two summer internships with the company 84.51º. He hopes to continue working in the area of data analytics upon graduation from NKU.

JACOB MOORE MAJOR: Computer Science MINOR: Computer Information Technology HOMETOWN: Independence, Kentucky INTERNSHIP: NASA As Jacob Moore finished up his freshman year at NKU, he received a letter that changed his life: You will be an integral part of advancing the NASA mission. Fast forward two years later, and he’s completed several internships—at the Goddard Space Flight Center, the Kennedy Space Center and now the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Jacob is currently working in the Flight Operations Directorate (FOD), where he supports mission critical software for NASA’s next deep space rocket designed to take humans deeper into the solar system. He’s been prototyping a communication application that will allow astronauts to receive assignment procedures and data files from home during their mission to lunar orbit. This application will also allow them to send real-time photos and videos back to Earth. “I remember being a child and thinking about the men and women who designed some of the systems that ran aboard the Apollo spacecraft,” he says. “It’s so exciting to think I am following in their footsteps. The code I write has the opportunity to outlive me and can even be a stepping stone in expanding humanity's presence in the universe. One day it could lead to the colonization of another planet.”

If there’s one place where you can always enjoy the hustle and bustle of campus life, it’s the Votruba Student Union. The Votruba Student Union is a fan-favorite building on campus—and not just because of the recent Steak ‘n Shake addition to the food court. The three-level, 144,000-square-foot building is home to a large food court, a Starbucks coffee shop, a game room and plenty of lounge spaces for watching TV, getting some homework done or taking a quick power nap.

There is nowhere on campus you would rather be during a Norse game than the cheering section. It’s noisy. It’s packed. It’s rowdy. But your heart pounds with pride, and you don’t stop cheering until the timer runs out. We send more than 200 student-athletes into competition proudly wearing black and gold. All 17 of our sports teams compete at the NCAA Division I level, and we’re one of 10 teams in the Horizon League. In fact, last year we won the Horizon League regular-season tournament in men's basketball and played in the NIT. In 2017-18, men’s basketball and women’s soccer won the Horizon League tournament. We were just the seventh men’s basketball team in history to make the NCAA tournament in our first year of eligibility. But even though we’ve won championships, what makes us proud is that our student-athletes are campus leaders. They know how to give it their all on and off the court. nkunorse.com

• Apply for federal, state and institutional aid programs by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You are encouraged to complete the FAFSA online at fafsa.gov. You and your parents will need a copy of recent W2s and tax returns. A new FAFSA becomes available Oct. 1 of every year. • When completing the FAFSA, be sure to indicate the NKU school code #009275. • To complete the FAFSA online, you will need a U.S. Department of Education Federal Student Aid ID (FSAID), which may be obtained at fafsa.gov. If you have additional questions or concerns, please visit nku.edu/financialaid or contact us at ofa@nku.edu.

NKU’s merit-based scholarship program is designed to recognize academically outstanding and creatively talented students. NKU awards more than $6 million in academic scholarships each year to the incoming freshman class. The university awards scholarships to highly motivated students who demonstrate strong academic performance. Students who achieve a 2.5 GPA and a 21 ACT or 1060 SAT or greater are considered for academic scholarships. The university offers numerous scholarship levels. To be considered for academic scholarships students must: • Apply for admission by Feb.15 • Submit the $40 application fee • Submit their high school transcript(s) • Submit any ACT or SAT scores Completing the FAFSA is highly recommended for maximum awards.
