BELONG At NKU, you can create an experience that is just as unique as you are. It’s a place where you’ll turn your dreams into your future. A place where you’ll make memories that will last a lifetime. You belong at a university that will help you reach your full potential, and we’re here to help you make the most of your experience. NKU isn’t just a place where you “went to college.” You’re not just a Norse for four years. You’re a Norse for life. But don’t just take our word for it.

You’ll feel it when you get here. INTRODUCTION1 1

EXPLORE

It’s no surprise that many of our students say our location played a role in their choice to come to NKU. The 420-acre campus that NKU calls home is nestled perfectly between the hills of Highland Heights, Kentucky, and the bustling Fortune 500 companies of downtown Cincinnati. You get the best of both worlds: a comprehensive education in a safe, suburban setting. We’re neighbors with an innovative, inspiring city—Cincinnati. Take a quick trip off campus to watch a Reds game at Great American Ball Park, or take in an exhibit at the nearest museum. Eat dinner and shop downtown, or experience a live concert at Riverbend Music Center. If you’re a thrill seeker, you can ride roller coasters at Kings Island. Cincinnati is full of fun, exciting activities. But it’s also home to hundreds of employers and entrepreneurs looking for graduates just like you. Whether you’re looking to land an internship or start your career, you have the opportunity to rub elbows with CEOs of several Fortune 500 companies.

HOME

When you become a Norse, you join a community of students from all over the world. But our students receive more than just a great education. Your time here will shape you, inspire you and help you become a better version of yourself. Bored? Not when you’re a Norse. There’s no shortage of things to do on campus. Study in Steely Library, or grab a bite to eat in the Votruba Student Union. Relax between classes at the outdoor amphitheatre, or read a book on one of the benches surrounding Loch Norse. Join a fitness class at the Campus Recreation Center, or cheer on the history-making Norse. Outside of the classroom, NKU is buzzing with activities and events. And it’s easy to get involved with more than 250 student organizations on campus. If you don’t find one that suits you, start one! Our campus community offers you endless opportunities to build lifelong skills, get involved and create lasting relationships.

If there’s one place where you can always enjoy the hustle and bustle of campus life, it’s the Votruba Student Union.

The Votruba Student Union is a fan-favorite building on campus. The three-level, 144,000-squarefoot building is home to a large food court, a Starbucks coffee shop, a game room and plenty of lounge spaces for watching TV, getting some homework done or taking a quick power nap.

Start exploring, and see why you belong here at NKU.

WHY HE CHOSE NKU My three sisters have all graduated from NKU, so I feel like I grew up here. I walked around campus and simply felt comfortable. WHAT HE’S STUDYING I study Nursing and am working to understand the practice as a science and as an art form. I am putting myself in situations that will make me a better nurse. My goals are to pursue education far beyond my bachelor’s degree. I hope to be a Nurse Practitioner in cardiology or pediatrics. WHY BREAKING GROUND IS HIS FAVORITE NKU MEMORY There is a retreat for freshmen called Breaking Ground, which is hosted by the Northern Kentucky Leadership Institute. This experience made me realize what is truly important in my life. Many of my closest friends come from this retreat!

but my favorite is Traci Freeman. She is so hilarious, and she cares for her students and truly wants them to succeed. WHY PROGRESSION IS HIS GREATEST PASSION Simply put, I will become a better brother, a better son, a better boyfriend, a better student, a better friend and a better athlete. I am committed to improvement. HIS ADVICE FOR FIRST-TIME FRESHMEN Relax and embrace the opportunity to start anew. It does not really matter what you were in high school—this an opportunity to grow and really work on yourself. Believe in yourself, and ask yourself why you are here. You can use your time in college to build the foundation for your adult life. Make connections, be kind and things will fall into place.

WHY HE LOVES THE HEALTH INNOVATION CENTER It’s essentially my second home. WHY HE COULDN’T PICK ONE FAVORITE PROFESSOR Robert Kues was my favorite Pre-Nursing professor. He teaches anatomy and physiology. The class has some difficult material, but he is so brilliant and personable. He is able to personalize his teaching to each student. In Nursing, all of the faculty have charisma,

STUDENT SERVICES At NKU, student success is our first priority. That’s why we offer programs and services to help you stay healthy—physically, mentally, academically and emotionally—so you can enjoy your time on campus. The Center for Student Inclusiveness (CSI) wants to make sure all students are acknowledged, welcomed and valued. CSI includes African-American Student Initiatives, Student Accessibility, Latino Programs and Services, LGBTQ Programs and Services, the Norse Violence Prevention Center and Parents Attending College.

TRIO Student Support Services provides motivated first-generation college students from moderate and low-income families with resources to help them stay in school, do well and graduate.

The Office of Student Financial Assistance guides students and their families through the financial process at Northern Kentucky University.

Health, Counseling & Student Wellness provides services that help NKU students achieve and maintain optimal levels of physical and emotional functioning.

The Office of the Registrar acts as “an official keeper of records,” which involves student and academic information—grades, transcripts, academic calendars and diplomas. The Veterans Resource Station proudly serves our veteran student population with special programs and services to ensure their academic success and transition into college. University Connect and Persist (UCAP) is where any student can meet face-to-face with knowledgeable staff to navigate financial, academic and personal topics.

The Office of Career Services provides excellent career-related programs, services and resources for students, alumni and parents.

The Office of First-Year Programs embraces a student-centered, holistic approach to success through courses and programs that support the academic achievement of first-year students. Norse Advising helps students navigate the university and make informed decisions while exploring or transitioning into other majors. Adult Learner Programs and Services assists working adult students through accelerated or traditional adult-centered education classes. FUEL NKU, a 2,300-square-foot pantry, provides free food, toiletries and essentials to students on campus.

WHY SHE LOVES NKU As an international student, I flew nearly 12,000 miles away from home to study at NKU. I was scared, and I really didn’t know what to expect, but now I am so glad that I took this step and came here. NKU has given and continues to give me so many great opportunities regardless of where I come from. WHAT SHE’S STUDYING I am a double major in Marketing and International Business. I have always wanted to learn how businesses work all around the world, and also I love to travel. Given that, my majors fit perfectly and give me an opportunity to travel all around the world. WHY PUBLIC SPEAKING IS HER FAVORITE CLASS My favorite class has surprisingly been public speaking that I took with Emma Walker. She is great, and she actually helped me gain so much confidence and made me feel better about how I speak in public. I really loved her class and am forever grateful for it!

future. First and foremost, my supervisor Mrs. Rebecca Hansen is awesome, and she has taught me great things. Getting to be a part of where I come from and being able to share how wonderful NKU is with other international students gives me so much pleasure. WHY SHE CAN’T PICK A FAVORITE MEMORY I have had so many fun moments here at NKU that I’ll never forget. From forcing my friends to keep their schedules free from noon-1 p.m. so that we all could eat lunch together, from being a tour guide and international orientation leader, going to NLS Fall Retreat and building friendships, I’ll cherish them all.

WHAT GETTING A DEGREE MEANS TO HER Coming all the way from Nepal to study and get this degree that I have worked so hard for is very meaningful for me and my family. It is just not a degree for me—it is something that I have dreamt of, have been passionate about and have worked so hard for!

Shraddha Dhakal Kathmandu, Nepal Marketing, International Business

WHY PEOPLE ARE HER GREATEST PASSION I love talking to people, and I’m also a great listener. Sometimes all we need is someone who can listen to us and what we are going through. It has helped me build life-long friendships and great memories!

THE INTERNSHIP SHE’LL MISS THE MOST I loved the work and everything I did during my marketing internship through the Office of International Students and Scholars Services (ISSS). Getting to interact with students all around the world is something I can see myself doing in the 20

There is nowhere on campus you would rather be during a Norse game than the cheering section. It’s noisy, packed and rowdy. But your heart pounds with pride, and you don’t stop cheering until the timer runs out. Every year, we send more than 200 student-athletes into competition proudly wearing black and gold. All 17 of our sports teams compete at the NCAA Division I level, and we’re one of 12 teams in the Horizon League. Even though we’ve won national championships and played in the NCAA Tournament, what makes us proud is that our student-athletes are campus leaders. They know how to give it their all on and off the court.

SHINE IN ANY TIME ZONE NKU’s campus isn’t the only place our students learn. Study abroad trips are lifechanging experiences, and your journey can take you as far away—or as close —as you want. You can live new experiences instead of just observing them.

“Studying abroad is an absolute must for every student! Traveling gives you the opportunity to learn about so many beautiful cultures, and a global mindset is indispensable in the workplace. I was able to spend a week-and-a-half in London and then five weeks in Greece. The Office of Education Abroad is amazing, and the scholarship opportunities are incredible.”

You’ll put your classroom knowledge to the test in real-world situations through research projects, co-ops, internships, student teaching, clinical rotations and service learning.

“I want to be able to interview, learn and tell the stories that matter to people. I want to learn how things that I see and encounter impact the people around me and be able to help make a change. My Journalism major is helping me learn to write these stories, while my Sociology minor is teaching me how to research and find ways to make change. Organizational Leadership is what’s going to help me take this change and move it forward.”
