BELONG
At NKU, you can create an experience that is just as unique as you are. It’s a place where you’ll turn your dreams into your future. A place where you’ll make memories that will last a lifetime. You belong at a university that will help you reach your full potential, and we’re here to help you make the most of your experience. NKU isn’t just a place where you “went to college.” You’re not just a Norse for four years. You’re a Norse for life. But don’t just take our word for it.
ON THE COVER NKU is home to many well-known sculptures, including The Box. The 8-by-8-by-16-foot aluminum box, installed outside the Fine Arts Center in 1976, was crafted by acclaimed minimalist artist Donald Judd.
You’ll feel it when you get here.
INTRODUCTION1 1
EXPLORE
It’s no surprise that many of our students say our location played a role in their choice to come to NKU. The 420-acre campus that NKU calls home is nestled perfectly between the hills of Highland Heights, Kentucky, and the bustling Fortune 500 companies of downtown Cincinnati. You get the best of both worlds: a comprehensive education in a safe, suburban setting. We’re neighbors with an innovative, inspiring city—Cincinnati. Take a quick trip off campus to watch a Reds game at Great American Ball Park, or take in an exhibit at the nearest museum. Eat dinner and shop downtown, or experience a live concert at Riverbend Music Center. If you’re a thrill seeker, you can ride roller coasters at Kings Island. Cincinnati is full of fun, exciting activities. But it’s also home to hundreds of employers and entrepreneurs looking for graduates just like you. Whether you’re looking to land an internship or start your career, you have the opportunity to rub elbows with CEOs of several Fortune 500 companies.

If there’s one place where you can always enjoy the hustle and bustle of campus life, it’s the Votruba Student Union. The Votruba Student Union is a fan-favorite building on campus. The three-level, 144,000-square-foot building is home to a large food court, a Starbucks coffee shop, a game room and plenty of lounge spaces for watching TV, getting some homework done or taking a quick power nap.

CAMPUS RECREATION CENTER Whether you want to play basketball, run on the treadmill, take a group fitness class or swim laps in the pool there is something for everyone at our Campus Recreation Center. You can work out before or after class or on the weekends, as the Campus Recreation Center is open seven days a week. WHY SHE CHOSE NKU What drew and kept me at NKU were all the opportunities it offers. When I came here, I did not expect to have so many chances to grow as a leader. I have learned how to be professional and poised while having fun at the same time! NKU has given me the opportunity to represent much more than just myself, and the growth that comes with that is astounding. WHY OUR PRESIDENT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT NKU President (Ashish) Vaidya makes sure that all students feel included. He finds time to talk to students and genuinely cares about those who attend NKU. WHY UNIVERSITY 101 IS HER FAVORITE CLASS University 101 is a class designed for freshmen. It allows them to be exposed to different campus resources as well as helping them determine what their major is. I became friends with many people in that class—some who I’m still friends with to this day! I made wonderful connections, as well as feeling more secure in what my major is and knowing about different campus aids. A MEMORY SHE’LL NEVER FORGET My favorite NKU memory dates to my junior recital—a solo performance every music major must put on to display their growth in their primary instrument. I was so nervous going into my recital, but as I walked out on stage and was performing, everything came so naturally! I felt like a rock star. After it was over, I took a deep breath and could not stop smiling!
WHY SHE LOVES THE AMPHITHEATRE When the weather is nice, I love to go and sit and watch the sunset and enjoy the breeze. The sun sets right over Loch Norse. Just sitting and observing the sunset is like a breath of fresh air and a great reset for however I am feeling. WHY SHE COULDN’T PICK ONE FAVORITE PROFESSOR Jason Vest, my former vocal coach, and Katie Barton, director of Choral Studies, have been my favorite two professors on campus. Both individuals have taught me so much about my disciplines. I have learned how to be a better teacher, musician and performer. They welcomed me with open arms and helped me find solutions to my issues. I could not have asked for better teachers.
WHAT SHE LOVES ABOUT NKU I love this university. When I selected a college, NKU was the only one that I applied to and offered everything I was asking for. NKU has given me the opportunity to represent myself and others in so many ways. I am a role model to young, black women and wear that badge with honor and pride. The opportunities that I have earned have helped me grow as a person and a professional.
HOW SHE STAYS FOCUSED When I sit to study, I work in intervals. I allow myself 30 minutes of rest between 30 minutes of studying or work. Good music also helps keep me focused!
Arah Samuels Canton, Michigan Music Education

The Veterans Resource Station proudly serves our veteran student population with special programs and services to ensure their academic success and transition into college. University Connect and Persist (UCAP) is where any student can meet face-to-face with knowledgeable staff to navigate financial, academic and personal topics.
The Office of Career Services provides excellent career-related programs, services and resources for students, alumni and parents.

WHY HE CHOSE NKU I chose NKU because of the opportunities available to undergraduate majors in the STEM field. The idea of conducting undergraduate research was extremely appealing to me. I also enjoyed the small class sizes because this meant I would be able to form close relationships with my professors. I also loved the atmosphere. The amount of student involvement on this campus is incredible. WHAT HE’S STUDYING I’m studying to become an oncology geneticist. My classes fall under the cell molecular biology track within the biology degree. Most of my classes are focused on the understanding of biology at the molecular level and how changes in things such as DNA and other biological mechanisms affect human health. WHAT HE THINKS ABOUT NKU The first word that comes to mind is electric. I feel the atmosphere on campus is full of energy and very contagious. WHY HE LOVES NKU The best thing about NKU is the university’s commitment to their students. I always feel my university puts the needs of the student before anything else. WHY GENETICS IS HIS FAVORITE CLASS It’s what I want to study for the rest of my life. We learn about 20
real-life applications of the class. Many of the skills I learn in my lab are what professionals use every day. Whether this is using sequencing programs for proteins or using tools and practices found within many labs, I feel very prepared for my future. WHY HE’LL NEVER FORGET HIS TIME AS AN ORIENTATION LEADER Being a person who represents our campus with pride and bringing in the next class of students was both an honor and privilege. I had an incredible time making connections with staff, my fellow Orientation Leaders and with the incoming freshmen. I have had multiple students come up to me and say that I was the reason they became involved with campus life, and that has been the most moving experience for me. WHY HE LOVES THE VOTRUBA STUDENT UNION The Student Union is the epicenter for all student life. There is always something going on, and I love how I never see the same thing or people twice. WHY DR. COOPER IS HIS FAVORITE PROFESSOR He has been a mentor for me. He is always happy to talk to me about my life and is excited to see me succeed. He is always giving me advice on the best ways to apply to graduate schools, how to succeed better in class and areas where I can improve.
HOW HE STAYS FOCUSED Whenever I get burned out on studying, tired of homework or I just want to sleep, I remember that I am going to become a great geneticist one day. WHY THE OCEAN IS HIS GREATEST PASSION I was originally born in Florida, so my early life was spent on the beach and in the water. I’ve always felt extremely connected to the ocean and all the creatures within it. I hope to donate to oceanic wildlife funds. My one life goal is to open a marine reserve in my name. WHY GETTING A DEGREE IS IMPORTANT TO HIM It means that I get to accomplish a dream I’ve had all my life: becoming a biologist. Many role models throughout my life have done amazing things in biology, and I want to be a part of it.
TREY BURNS Taylor Mill, Kentucky Biology, Honors

There is nowhere on campus you would rather be during a Norse game than the cheering section. It’s noisy, packed and rowdy. But your heart pounds with pride, and you don’t stop cheering until the timer runs out. We send more than 200 student-athletes into competition proudly wearing black and gold. All 17 of our sports teams compete at the NCAA Division I level, and we’re one of 10 teams in the Horizon League. In fact, last year we won the Horizon League post-season tournament in men’s basketball and played in the NCAA Tournament. Even though we’ve won championships, what makes us proud is that our student-athletes are campus leaders. They know how to give it their all on and off the court.

"I was able to complete half of my student teaching in Knysna, South Africa, where I taught kindergarten and first grade. I gained an incredible family who graciously hosted me and will forever be a part of my life. NKU's Office of Education Abroad helped me research the program, submit my application, find flights and create my timeline and budget. With the help of scholarships and financial aid, my trip was almost fully funded!"

“I had the opportunity to intern for a news station that I’ve grown up watching my whole life—WLEX-TV. My internship reaffirmed my aspiration of becoming a broadcast journalist.
