GRAND FINALS 2020 SATURDAY 31 OCTOBER 2020

NEWFM NORTHERN LEAGUE ONE GRAND FINAL PREVIEW FIRST GRADE Magic Park – Saturday 5pm For New Lambton and Singleton, perhaps the biggest thing the 2020 NEWFM Northern League One first grade grand final represents is progress. The Eagles and Strikers will do battle for the championship and, while only one will walk away with the trophy as the sun sets over Magic Park on Saturday evening, both will know the 2020 season has provided them the base on which to build future success. For New Lambton, the appointment of Tom Davies as first grade coach has proved a masterstroke. The young coach led the Eagles to the premiership in his first season in charge of the club’s top grade side and is 90 minutes away from completing a historic premiership-championship double, a feat completed only twice in the last seven seasons. For the Eagles, a powerhouse club of the 1970s that have not played in the top division of Northern NSW Football since 1981, a premiership-championship double would prove their ambition to return New Lambton to the club’s glory days has the potential to be realised. For Singleton, it is fair to say not many would have even predicted the Strikers to qualify for the finals, let alone challenge for the premiership in 2020. But Singleton achieved that goal for the first time in 16 years, losing just two games all season as they pushed New Lambton all the way for the premiership.

While many expected Singleton to fall away in the finals having already overachieved during the 2020 campaign, the Strikers refused. Instead, they created more history in qualifying for the club’s first grand final since 1992. Their progression is a testament to first grade coach Brendan Slade and his players who have transformed Singleton into a young, fit and hungry outfit with limitless potential at this level. It is why they are still playing on the final weekend in October rather than some more fancied, more experienced sides. Davies said he was proud of his players and their achievements so far. “I’m definitely proud of the effort, especially winning the premiership,” Davies said. “That was one of the things we set out to achieve as a group and I think it’s pretty important in football to get that top spot. “To get to the final as well and play for the championship, I said to the group last week over the last few years, even with Cooks Hill’s dominance, not a lot of teams have been able to win both. “It’s a really difficult thing to go put your stamp on this competition. But when we set out in November last year, all those months ago, it’s a box we wanted to tick and I’m excited for the boys and for the team and the club that they’ll get to experience a grand final.”

VS

Slade also said he was proud of his team who have continued to defy those who said they could not maintain their success. “We set goals like every other club at the start of the season to make the finals. We started to string a few wins together and people started to think it might be possible. It was just about being consistent after that,” Slade said. “I’m super proud of them. They’re a great bunch of guys. So easy to get along with. There’s no big egos, everyone just goes out to do their job and play for one another. I think that has been key, that mentality of wanting to fight for each other.” While previous meetings always count for little in grand finals, Singleton do have a distinct advantage over New Lambton. The Strikers have beaten the premiers twice this season, including a 2-1 victory at Alder Park in round seven in August thanks to captain Hayden Nicol’s winner.

“The approach you have to have in a final, I think that’s what we took out of it,” Davies said. “And also no matter what happens in a game to pull together and keep fighting to win until the final whistle. That’s what we spoke about as a group. I’ve got no concerns in terms of that. “I know the boys are keen to bounce back against Singleton. We’ll make sure our focus is to keep to our way of playing and focus on getting the best result on the day. I think the boys are excited to experience the build up and obviously get stuck in and leave it all out there.” As for Singleton, Slade said his side would be inspired by the support from the local community which had thrown itself behind the club. “It would be huge for Singleton to win a grand final. Just incredible,” Slade said.

Singleton then made a statement with a 4-0 victory over the Eagles in the major semi-final, confirming their passage through to the grand final in the process.

“Singleton, Muswellbrook, those sorts of areas are massive on their sport. They really get behind the different codes in everything they do because they are representing our area.

New Lambton though showed great resilience to bounce back with a 2-0 win over Cooks Hill United in the preliminary final to earn a shot at the title and the potential to gain revenge on Singleton for that humbling defeat a fortnight ago.

“It will be huge. I’ve said to the players when you retire you always look back on your achievements and winning a grand final is something no one can take away from you. And as a club, you’ll always be remembered.”

Davies said his side had learnt much from that loss, particularly mentally.

GRAND FINALS 2020 SATURDAY 31 OCTOBER 2020

ROAD TO THE GRAND FINAL QUALIFYING FINAL Singleton 1-0 Kahibah FC

MAJOR SEMI-FINAL New Lambton FC 0-4 Singleton Strikers

Singleton are one game away from a grand final after a Jake Barner goal gave the Strikers a 1-0 win over Kahibah FC.

PRELIMINARY FINAL New Lambton FC 2-0 Cooks Hill United

Singleton became the first team to qualify for the NEWFM Northern League One grand final after thrashing premiers New Lambton 4-0.

Kahibah had climbed from fifth to third in the final week of the regular season to earn a place in the qualifying final and made the long trip north to Howe Park looking to upset the young Singleton side who surprised many in finishing second on the NEWFM Northern League One table.

A large crowd made their way south from the upper Hunter to the Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility, with the support helping carry the Strikers to their first grand final since 1992.

A Josh Cox penalty save late in the second half helped inspire New Lambton to a 2-0 win over Cooks Hill United and a place in the NEWFM Northern League One grand final.

The Rams started strongly before Singleton turned the tide as they created the better chances in the first half, with neither side able to break the deadlock before half-time. The Strikers continued to push in the second half before Barner finally put Singleton in front with 20 minutes to play, much to the delight of the vocal home crowd. Singleton were far from home though with young defender Marcus Morris shown a second yellow card, leaving the hosts to battle on with 10 men for the closing stages. But the Strikers would hold on to score an impressive victory, arguably one of the biggest in the club’s history with Singleton involved in finals football for the first time since 2004. Singleton coach Brendan Slade said he was thrilled with the win despite some nervous moments. “I must admit, I was a nervous wreck [watching that],” Slade said. “Kahibah is a tough side, so I knew it would be close. “At half-time, I told the boys to try and maintain possession. And I think they did that quite well. We dominated the second period.”

Joel Barner, Lachlan Nicol and Bowen Bagnall were among the goal scorers as Singleton blew away the premiers in a rampant second half which had followed a cagey opening 45 minutes. “It’s just that buzz. A sort of numbness, thinking we’ve made it [to the grand final],” Singleton coach Brendan Slade said. “It’s a bit unreal. It hasn’t really sunk in, to be honest. I’m still a bit numb. We’re just over the moon, so excited. “The crowds have been getting behind us, the papers up home are right behind us. It feels like the whole town is behind us. “It was pretty tight, not a lot of chances. It could have gone either way. But we got that early goal and I think it gave us some confidence.” Slade was thankful his side had also earned a week off ahead of the grand final at Magic Park on Saturday. “We’ll get a chance to freshen up a bit. We’ve got a bit of soreness and tightness so we’ll have a pool session on Tuesday night then a light session Thursday,” Slade said. “We want to watch [the preliminary final between] New Lambton and Cooks Hill so we might have a get together next weekend then go and watch that game. “After that I haven’t really thought too far ahead. [We’re taking it] one week at a time, as they say.”

Premiers New Lambton hosted last season’s premiers Cooks Hill at Arthur Edden Oval in the preliminary final last Saturday, with the winner to advance to the grand final against Singleton.

“Both teams had good opportunities and moments through the game. We maybe had the better ones but we took our chances in those moments which we’ve talked about all year, when the key moments happen take the opportunity. “It was a good finals game and I’m happy to get on to next week.” Davies was full of praise for his side, in particular Cox whose penalty save helped turn the momentum of the game.

The Eagles started brightly and took the lead midway through the first half when Riley Taylor flicked home a Jack Wetney freekick.

“It was really good for him, bouncing back after last week with a clean sheet and standing up for us in a big moment,” Davies said.

New Lambton held onto their 1-0 lead despite both sides having chances in the wet conditions in what was an open, entertaining match.

“He made a couple of good saves in the second half as well when Cooks Hill were pushing hard.

Cooks Hill pushed for an equaliser in the second half and looked as though they would be rewarded for their effort when they were awarded a penalty with 20 minutes to play. But Cox stood up for New Lambton, making a save to preserve the Eagles’ slender advantage. The visitors kept pressing only for New Lambton to seal the result in injury time as they hit Cooks Hill on the counter attack, with Wetney tucking the ball home after good work from Taylor to spark wild celebrations at the Eagles’ nest. New Lambton coach Tom Davies was delighted with the mentality shown by his side which had bounced back from a 4-0 defeat to Singleton in the major semi-final. “The boys put in a good effort in terms of dealing with finals football much better,” Davies said. “It’s a good step for the club overall. A big positive after a poor result the week before. The boys reacted well. They showed they were up to it and able to match their intensity and what you need to do to win finals football. “From a neutral perspective I think it would have been exciting. It was quite stretched at times and end to end. The weather made it a bit slippery and the ball skidded through.

“I thought everyone left everything out there. Luke Jovcevski was also back for us who missed the Singleton game with concussion. Having him back in the side for his leadership he gives us a focal point as well, he’s always one player that gets us going in the right direction and leads the group. New Lambton also lost Jackson O’Sullivan inside the opening 10 minutes to a head clash, with O’Sullivan taken to hospital to treat the injury which required stitches. But Davies said O’Sullivan was not in doubt for the grand final at Magic Park after O’Sullivan was cleared of concussion. New Lambton will now turn their attention to the decider with added motivation following their humbling defeat to Singleton a week ago. “We spoke about it as a group. We were lucky that we were in a position to have a second chance,” Davies said. “It was a poor performance overall. We didn’t really turn up on the day [in the major semi-final against Singleton]. We spoke about how we needed to play in finals football, doing the little things right, playing to our key principles. “We had a really strong response in the end to make sure we were fired up for [the preliminary final against Cooks Hill]. “It was a good reaction but we need to carry the same mentality into the grand final.”

Clubs with two representatives each on NEWFM Northern League One grand final day do battle with New Lambton to take on Kahibah in the reserve grade decider.

The Rams were forced to front up for the preliminary final against South Cardiff and got the job done at Arthur Edden Oval on Saturday, winning 2-1 thanks to goals from Jensen Hunt and Cameron Wamsley.

Premiers Kahibah had to do it the hard way just to reach the grand final. The Rams defeated New Lambton 4-1 in the qualifying final, only to have the result reversed to a 3-0 defeat after Kahibah were found to have fielded a number of players who did not meet the finals eligibility qualification.

Kahibah have had the better of the two meetings between the sides this season. As well as the initial 4-1 win in the major semifinal, the Rams won the round six encounter 2-1 at Kahibah Oval. Jed Grant had given the visitors the lead 10 minutes before halftime, only for Kahibah to strike twice late on with two goals in four minutes to Rhys Tippett and Riley Ferguson.

Instead, New Lambton advanced straight to the grand final at Kahibah’s expense. The Eagles, who finished third on the table, had upset Belmont Swansea United 3-2 in the qualifying final to earn their place in the major semi-final against Kahibah, with the Eagles enjoying a slice of fortune as they advanced to the decider due to Kahibah’s indiscretion.

Kahibah finished one point above Belmont Swansea United on the reserve grade table to secure the premiership, with the Rams a further nine points above New Lambton who finished third. But that will count for little when the sides meet in the decider.

Premiers Toronto Awaba FC will look to complete a premiership-championship double when they take on Kahibah FC in the under-18s grand final.

The Red Devils were expected to push Kahibah all the way, with Wallsend one of only two teams Kahibah had failed to beat during the regular season.

The Stags won the premiership by six points ahead of West Wallsend, with Toronto Awaba finishing 11 points clear of thirdplaced Kahibah.

But the Rams put in one of their best performances of the season with two goals to Curtis Baggs inspiring Kahibah to a 5-1 victory with Reynolds, Jordan Whitten and Cooper Osborne also scoring.

It was a relatively straight forward route to the grand final for Toronto Awaba, with the Stags downing Kahibah 2-1 in the major semi-final thanks to goals from Jacob Dundas and Ethan Wilson.

The head to head clashes between the teams indicate the decider could be a tight affair, with the three matches all split by a solitary goal.

Kahibah’s journey was more complicated, with the Rams downing West Wallsend 3-0 in the qualifying final thanks to a goal from Daniel Morris and Travis Reynolds’ double.

As well as the 2-1 victory in the major semi-final, Toronto Awaba repeated the score when they secured the points from their round two clash in March, before the suspension of football. Kahibah though will take confidence from their 1-0 victory in round 13 thanks to Ewan Kelly’s 70th minute winner.

The Rams then fell to Toronto Awaba in the major semi-final despite another Reynolds goal, meaning if Kahibah were to reach the grand final and another crack at the Stags they would need to get past Wallsend FC in the preliminary final.
