A PUBLICATION OF NORTHLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY
NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK – APRIL 13-19
National Library Week will be observed April 13-19, 2014 with the theme, “Lives change @ your library®.” First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. It is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation’s libraries and librarians and to promote library use and support. So come out to the library in April and enjoy all that it has to offer, some of which is highlighted in this newsletter!
NEW! Beyond the Stacks! This month’s feature: CQ Researcher
Each month we will feature a different library database, or other on-line resource. These information treasures are not free on the Internet, but they are free if you go through Northland’s website and use your library card. CQ Researcher provides balanced, comprehensive coverage of important current issues. Each 12,000-word report offers in-depth, unbiased coverage of a pressing political or social issue. Reports cover topics in health, international affairs, education, public policy, the environment, technology and the U.S. economy. You can read each report in its entirety or navigate by section, such as “background,” “chronology,” “current situation,” and the “pro-con” feature. Easy-to-understand graphics, including photographs, tables, maps, and charts, help make sense of complex topics. CQ Researcher also offers bibliographies of key sources and links to resources for further information. CQ Researcher has been the recipient of the American Bar Association’s Silver Gavel Award and the Society of Professional Journalists Award for Excellence. It was selected by Library Journal as a “Best Reference Database.” Our subscription includes access to current reports and more than twenty years of previous reports. Original content guaranteed: CQ Researcher is published by CQ Press and not available through any other source. Valuable Features include “Hot Topics”, which provides updates on 20 hot topics at least once a year; directions on “How to Cite,” to aid students writing research reports; “Your Profile” tools such as “Favorite Documents” and “Saved Searches”; and “In the News” which updates information on issues covered in recent reports. You can check out CQ Researcher by going to our website www.northlandlibrary.org. Be sure to have your library card number. For more information about CQ Researcher, and other excellent databases that are available for free with your library card, please ask at either the Adult or Children’s/ Young Adult Reference Desk, or call us at 412-366-8100, ext 113.

Spotlight on Staff Name: Mary Menk Work at Northland: Young Adult Librarian Time at Northland: 10 months Education: MLS from University of Maryland, College Park Why do you choose to work at Northland Library? I was a Young Adult (Teen) Librarian in Virginia and after moving to Pittsburgh was excited about the oppor tunity to work with the Teen patrons at Northland. I have had a great time during Teen Thursdays getting to know the Teens who come here after school. Getting the most out of your library (secrets): My favorite database is Mango Languages. They provide you with access to all different languages in a easy to use way with native speakers. It also allows you to keep track of where you are in the lesson. While they offer the traditional languages my favorite that they offer is Pirate. September 19th is International Talk Like a Pirate Day and this will help you get ready for it. SCIENCE & MATH BASED PROGRAMMING AT NORTHLAND
Did you know that many of the Children’s programs at Northland are Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) based? We are able to provide this programming with the generous support of Bentley Systems STEM Sponsorship Initiative. Northland Library Foundation Board member Jeremy Shaffer is the Director of Transportation Asset Management for Bentley and spearheaded the partnership that has yielded over $2,000 in funding for various children’s programs. These programs will be starting back up just in time for our Summer Reading Club. Stay tuned! Below are brief overviews of some of the programs STEM has made possible. Science-tots Storytime is a program for three to five year olds. The children hear stories and sing songs with science themes followed by an experiment based on that theme. They have learned how snowflakes form, about water tension, how rainbows are formed, and how ducks stay dry in the water. The CSI Club or Children Science Investigators is our program for children in Kindergarten through Second Grade. Children in this hands-on program get to conduct experiments, make observations and draw conclusions about those experiments. Mission… is a science club for children in Third through Fifth Grades. This program gives these children hands-on experience creating various items through engineering challenges. Our Family Science Olympiad and Family Science Nights allow families to learn more about the world around them. Our latest Family Science Night focused on the science in Nursery Rhymes. Thank you again to Jeremy and Bentley Systems for their generous support, without which these programs would not have been possible!
