BEREAVEMENT: WELL-BEING AFTER LOSS
The University of Pittsburgh is conducting research on how older people manage grief and stress after the loss of a loved one. Bereavement is one of the most difficult things that can happen to a person. Even though we know that people die, when we lose someone close, it can be very hard to move forward. On Tuesday, January 26 at 10 a.m., Dr. Sarah Stahl, assistant professor of psychiatry, will present information, lifestyle choices and simple steps that may serve to promote health and well-being after bereavement and will talk about emerging research on grief. Dr. Stahl will answer your questions after her presentation. Attendees who wish to participate will be invited to be screened at a later date for a research study on bereavement after the program. Please register. (This program will repeat in February in the evening.)

Volunteer Focus Name: Bonnie Macdonald Volunteer’s Assignment: Various Volunteer Municipality: Ross In a few words, why do you volunteer at Northland Library? Bonnie’s volunteer experience began in 2012 when she started in the Playful Parent Room in the Children’s Department. Bonnie fondly remembers, “meeting with the children, their parents and watching the kids play and interact with each other restored my faith in goodness.” When a volunteer was no longer needed in this setting, Bonnie became a volunteer at large. New opportunities are sent to volunteers via email and this encourages volunteers like Bonnie to check their calendars. Bonnie’s availability has resulted in her assisting with several of the Children’s Summer Reading Clubs, science programs and Halloween events. As Bonnie states, “I ‘bunned’ hot dogs for the summer picnic and have worked two book sales.” She has also volunteered at the tax form table and believes the variety of opportunities can match anyone’s talents and interests. Bonnie said, “not only do I feel I am giving back, but I have made so many new friends and have had wonderful experiences. I highly recommend Northland Library as a rewarding volunteer experience.”
