At Your Library
Participants arrive to the Home School Meet-Ups on Fridays from 10-11:30 a.m.
Children concentrate at Northland’s Annual Chess Tournament on Saturday, January 16.
Feature Focus Each Fall Northland collects items for KnitHope whose mission is to distribute hand-knit or crocheted hats and scarves to those in need in our local Pittsburgh community. While these scarves provide needed physical warmth for our city's winters, these handmade items also send a much needed message to those who may be struggling, that people in their community care about them. This year, KnitHope collected 408 handmade items and 332 of those items were collected at Northland! The Northland Knitters group which meets twice a month at the library is responsible for quite a few of these items. The items were then distributed at North Hills Community Outreach’s annual Coat Shop. Local families who cannot afford winter coats are able to select coats and accessories like the scarves and hats that KnitHope collects. The second place these items are distributed is the Northside Common Ministries during the Annual Toy Shop. A Northland staff member who volunteers at this event recognized items from Northland’s collection. “I wish I could share the hugs and thanks I received from so many of the participants. Many had tears of gratitude in their eyes.” The Northside Common Ministries also gives these items to men in their homeless shelter. Lastly, the items are dropped off at the North Hills Community Outreach’s “In Service of Seniors” program. The hats and scarves go out to homebound senior citizens as their holiday gift. Dana Getz, KnitHope founder said, “Thank you so much for your continued support with this project. Every year I am touched by the generosity of our community.”

The University of Pittsburgh is conducting research on how older people manage grief and stress after the loss of a loved one. Bereavement is one of the most difficult things that can happen to a person. Even though we know that people die, when we lose someone close, it can be very hard to move forward. On Monday, February 15 at 7 p.m., Dr. Sarah Stahl, assistant professor of psychiatry, will present information, lifestyle choices and simple steps that may serve to promote health and well-being after bereavement and will talk about emerging research on grief (repeat of program from January). Dr. Stahl will answer your questions after her presentation. Attendees who wish to participate will be invited to be screened at a later date for a research study on bereavement after the program. Beyond the Stacks - Three Free (and reliable) Health Websites: We usually feature services that have been purchased by Northland. But these three sites are so good that we decided to feature them this month. MedlinePlus (https://medlineplus.gov/) is an online information service produced by the National Library of Medicine. It provides consumer health information in English and Spanish. The site uses information from the National Library of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health, other U.S. government agencies, and non-governmental health-related organizations, such as the National Cancer Institute and the Mayo Clinic. You can use MedlinePlus to learn about the latest treatments, look up information on a drug or supplement, find out the meanings of words, or view medical videos or illustrations. You can also get links to the latest medical research on your topic or find out about clinical trials. Lab Tests Online (https://labtestsonline.org/) is a website that helps patients and caregivers understand laboratory tests. It includes information about what the test is designed to do, and what the results mean. The site is produced by the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. Health News Review (http://www.healthnewsreview.org/) is a website that rates the completeness, accuracy, and objectivity of U.S. news stories that include claims about medical issues. It rates each story on a zero- to five-star scale, and then explains how each story received its rating. Of course it also links to the original release of the story. Computer Classes

Volunteer Focus How Does 2016 Look?
2016 is a year of the Monkey in the Chinese zodiac and Northland volunteers typify the Monkey traits. Our volunteers like to take challenges, are intelligent, have magnetic personalities and are fast learners. They also can adapt to different working environments and work very hard- all traits of the Monkey in Chinese culture. Predictions and changes follow each new year and 2016 will be no different. The SAT will change in 2016 with promises to strengthen the test’s predictive validity and more closely reflect the skills that college students really need. Author Ann Patchett believes that despite Amazon and e-readers customers are embracing their community bookstores and marvels on the return of bookstores. One thing we at Northland know for certain, is that we will continue to value and rely on our many dedicated volunteers. Throughout 2016, our team of volunteers will continue to keep great things going at Northland! During their shifts, 28 volunteers welcome patrons to the Book Nook. Between 50-60 dedicated volunteers are the mainstay of our two annual book sales and 36-38 volunteers assist staff in numerous capacities for the Summer Reading Club (SRC). The last SRC offered 68 programs to 2,751 children. Science Spot, Engineering Super Heroes, Sink or Float, and Mother Goose Olympics delighted and fascinated all attendees. Northland volunteers are a prized asset and we look forward to you joining our team to be a part of the exciting year ahead.
