MEDICAL AND NATURAL THERAPIES FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

Continuing studies emphasize that there is no single best treatment for children with ASD, but combinations of medical and non-medical treatments can help the development of cognitive and language skills. There will be a question and answer session after the presentation. Please register.
On Thursday, December 3 at 7 p.m. John Eld, professional wine educator, will introduce his favorite wines for chasing away the chill of the season. Winter weather is just around the corner and as the winter weather drags on, it’s time for some warming wines to lift our spirits. According to John, there are some great choices of wines that will fit that need. Join us for an evening of wine tasting and wine education with tasty finger foods to accompany each of the five wines John will introduce.

Beyond the Stacks NoveList
The most challenging question at the Reference Desks is “Can you recommend something good to read?” One of the resources we use to help answer that question is NoveList. There are several ways to find your next great read using NoveList. One way is to search the title of a book you have already read and loved. If, for instance, you loved Atonement by Ian McEwan, you can type that title in the search box to get a list of ‘read-alikes.’ Instead of just a list of titles and plots that someone considers similar, NoveList tells you how the books are similar. Another way to find you next great read is to ‘Browse by Genre.’ You can then drill down to a narrower genre. ‘Thrillers and Suspense’ then narrows down to twelve sub-genres such as ‘Legal Thrillers,’ ‘Medical Thrillers,’ ‘Christian Thrillers,’ or ‘Political Thrillers.’ There is also NoveList K-8 to help students in those grades find their next great read. Just go to www.northlandlibrary.org/databases and click on NoveList or NoveList K-8. Just don’t spend so much time browsing the site that you forget to read the novels!

Volunteer Focus Name: Patti Riegelnegg Volunteer’s Assignment: Every Monday, Patti enters the previous week volunteer hours into the volunteer database. Volunteer Municipality: Town of McCandless In a few words, why do you volunteer at Northland Library? Patti and her husband recently returned to Pennsylvania in retirement after spending several years in Northwest Indiana. While she was not familiar with the North Hills, she became aware of Northland Public Library through its publicized Spring Book Sale. Attending the sale, Patti was struck by the enthusiasm, friendliness and passion demonstrated by the many volunteers present. As a lifelong reader, library patron and adult education teacher, Patti felt that she would like to become a part of the library experience. As Patti states, “I have found that volunteering at Northland is also a great way to learn about my new community and its people.”
