PRESERVING THE HARVEST: SUMMER’S BOUNTY MEANS FOOD FOR THE WINTER
Susan Marquesen first learned to garden and preserve foods as a child in Iowa and continued the tradition with her own small children. Now a Pittsburgh resident, she gardens and preserves for family and friends and began teaching others how to can, freeze and preserve. Join us on Thursday, August 13 at 6:30 p.m. to learn about the best methods to preserve the taste of “fresh from the garden or farmers’ markets” throughout the year and enjoy a taste of Susan’s homemade jams and jellies. COMPUTER RECYCLING EVENT
On Saturday, August 15 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m., Northland will host a secure computer recycling and data destruction event in the lower level parking lot. BE RED CROSS READY: FOR SENIORS BY SENIORS
Though we are often encouraged these days to have a plan in place for any kind of major disaster, most of us are woefully unprepared. Do we know exactly where important information is kept? Do we have a supply kit (blankets, flashlight, water, etc.) prepared and ready? A list of important contacts? Planning ahead for emergencies can greatly reduce the stress and panic that comes with such events. On Thursday, August 20 at 10 a.m., senior Red Cross volunteers will discuss the most important measures to take in order to be prepared for disasters and emergencies. Each audience member will receive a few items to start a Preparedness Kit, such as lights, whistles and a covering for warmth. BE RED CROSS READY is a proven plan that can help us all gain greater peace of mind. Registration is required.
INDIAN VEGETARIAN COOKING WITH ANN MANCHELLA
On Thursday, August 27 at 7 p.m., our favorite Indian cook, Ann Manchella, will prepare a dessert called Rasagulla, made of paneer balls in sugar syrup. Paneer is homemade cheese that is similar to Farmer’s Cheese. Learn how to make this popular sweet, and then enjoy a tasty sample. Please register.

Join us on Monday, August 17 from noon to 2 p.m., for lunch and an educational program offered by independent health plan agent, Elizabeth Ley, who will explain, in understandable terms, how Medicare works, how to pick the Medicare and supplemental plan that works for you and how to factor into your choice the prescription drugs you currently use. As an independent agent, Elizabeth does not recommend specific plans but helps you to make wise decisions. Registration is required.

Get ready for another 10-week Wise Walk program beginning Tuesday, September 1 at 9:30 a.m. Participants will meet with Wise Walk leader, Mary Jean Voigt, at the library to receive information and handouts, then will go to North Park to walk for 30 to 45 minutes. For the remaining nine weeks, the group will meet each Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at Pie Traynor Field in North Park to walk together and enjoy the fall weather. Water and snacks will be provided. The 2015 Adult Summer Reading Club continues until August 29. Interested adults may register for the program at the upper level reference desk. New this summer is Bookshelf Bingo, which allows players to get a stamp for each book they read in different categories. As players complete a Bingo, they get an extra prize entry. For each stamp on your card, you can fill out a prize slip for a chance to win a gift card to local area restaurants and merchants. Let the reading begin!

The mystery book for August is The Anodyne Necklace by Martha Grimes. Volunteer Focus Name: Daniel Greer Volunteer’s Assignment and Schedule: Computer Center, Wednesday evenings In a few words, why do you volunteer at Northland Library?
Dan volunteers because he thoroughly enjoys helping others and giving back to the community. He believes that all the small differences add up to make larger change, and that makes all his time spent absolutely worth it. Volunteering in the Computer Center combines Dan’s passion for helping others with his love of computers. In addition to assisting patrons with computer requests, Dan has also helped other volunteers with the fall and spring book sales. Dan enjoys an impressive volunteer background that began with teaching computers classes a few years ago through North Hills Community Outreach. He also teaches at the Springdale Library on Thursday evenings. Additionally Dan has a varied volunteer history that includes holiday bell ringing, valentines for senior citizens and school supplies drives. His community service list also features the Pittsburgh Food Bank, Hartwood Acres Blues Festival food drive and Thanksgiving food drive at Giant Eagle. Northland applauds Dan for being chosen one of Pittsburgh’s Top 50 Outstanding Young Citizens of 2015. He is in the top 10 percent of his class at Deer Lakes High School and is active in Student Council as well as being a member of the school forensics/debate team. Dan’s future plans include studying computer science when he begins college in the fall of 2016.
