August 2014

A PUBLICATION OF NORTHLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY

Northland’s Fall Book Sale will be held on Oct. 3, 4 and 5. We are in need of donated children’s items such as children’s books, children’s videos, and children’s cds. We are also looking for volunteers to help with the setup of the sale, to work shifts during the sale and to break down on Sunday after the sale. The online form for volunteering will be available on northlandlibrary.org starting Aug. 13. Questions concerning any aspect of volunteering should be directed to Karen Puff, 412-366-8100 ext. 135.

Beyond the Stacks: Each month we will feature a different library database, or other

on-line resource. These information treasures are not free on the Internet, but are free if you go through Northland’s website and use your library card.

Think downloadables are just for adults? Think again. Northland offers lots of downloadable content for kids. There are books, movies, audiobooks, music, and even magazines that are available free with your library card. All of our e-providers—OverDrive, OneClickDigital, Freegal, Hoopla, and Zinio—have materials for kids. OverDrive has an especially kid-friendly page for children’s content. All children’s titles can still be found from our regular OverDrive site, but patrons who wish to limit their search to materials for children can visit the ”eResources for Kids” page on northlandlibrary.org under “Children & Teens”. The “eResources for Kids” page offers a visually engaging, simplified site with three basic categories across the top: Subjects, Collections, and Levels. Each of these categories offers multiple options for focusing your search or browsing experience. There’s also an advanced search feature that lets you limit your results by grade level, lexile level, subject, format, and rating (a five-star rating system). If you need help at any time, just click on OverDrive’s “help” button at the top of each page. And don’t forget about the kids’ content in our databases. Check out TumbleBooks, BookFlix, and NoveList K-8. Make your summer trips more pleasant with high-quality e-content for kids. Did we mention that it’s FREE with your library card?

Featured Adult Programming: Registration is required for the following free

adult programs except where noted. You may register online, in person at the Adult Service desk or by calling 412-366-8100 extension 113.

Featured Adult Programming continued MEDICARE – PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER

Over 65 and retiring? Not employed but nearing 65? It’s time to think about Medicare, get the facts, and make some decisions. Join us on Monday, August 18, at 7 p.m. to educate yourself. No part of Medicare pays for all of a beneficiary’s covered medical costs and many costs are not covered at all. The program contains premiums, deductibles and coinsurance, which the covered individual must pay out-of-pocket. Some people may qualify to have other government programs (such as Medicaid) pay premiums and some or all of the costs associated with Medicare. Enrolling in Medicare is the first step, but understanding how Medicare works should come before that first step. There are procedures to consider and decisions to make about supplemental insurance plans and prescription drug plans. Patricia Spahr, an independent health plan agent, will explain, in plain terms, how Medicare works, how enrollment works and what decisions you must make in order to enroll in a plan. She will describe the various supplemental health insurance plans that are available in our area, but will not recommend any one of them over another. Bring your questions and become informed in order to make wise decisions that affect your health care for the future.

INDIAN COOKING CLASS

Join us on Thursday, August 14 at 7 p.m. to learn how to prepare mint rice, a vegetarian dish with fresh mint, cilantro and spices, taught by the talented Ann Manchella. All attendees will receive a sample of the dish at the end of class. Registration required. Please contact the Adult Services desk by calling 412-366-8100 x113 or you may register online.

Northland Library will be closed on Monday, September 1 for Labor Day.
