Volunteering At Northland VOLUNTEERS
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
Residence: Wexford
VOLUNTEERS LEND A HAND TO THE TECHNICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
Name: Shilpi Dhussa
Volunteer Assignment: Rotating Assignments In a few words, why do you volunteer at Northland Library? “My several volunteering assignments range from working in the IT department, book sale, shelving and the technical department. These assignments have given me a tremendous opportunity to learn about the library system. What I learned surprised me and gave me a new appreciation for the library and the people who make it work.” A little more about our volunteer of the month… Shilpi became a library volunteer in Illinois in 2008 after leaving a teaching career for motherhood. One of her friends introduced her to the library and she was hooked. When her husband’s job relocated the family to Pittsburgh, she found Northland. “Volunteering at the library allows me to explore different avenues of information and thought,” said Shilpi. “If I am not having an interesting conversation with one of my library friends, then I am finding interesting titles of films and books, oftentimes, one leads to the other.”
Stop by the Book Nook for Valentine’s Day gift ideas!
Shilpi’s most recent volunteer position was in the Technical Services Department, which processes all materials before being placed into the library collection. This includes unpacking and sorting the new orders, attaching a bar code to each item, typing labels, and covering/placing the appropriate stickers on each item so patrons can use the self-check-out machines. Approximately 2,000 items per month are handled, including: books, audio books, DVD’s, and CD’s. Both librarians and library assistants enter all items into the online catalog. This department trains and welcomes volunteers to serve as ‘book doctors.’ Flexibility in volunteer sessions is available and may vary to accommodate all schedules. A two-hour per week commitment is required. If you have the time and desire, we have an opportunity waiting for you! Please call the volunteer office at 412-3668100, ext. 135 or puffk@einetwork.net.
Prepaid $5 copy cards can be purchased at the Book Nook. All new and existing cards will get 3 free additional copies added to the cards value. Consider buying a prepaid copy card so you won’t have to scrounge around to find change to pay for copies or travel between library floors to pay for copies. The card never expires and can be shared between people!
