At Your Library

Feature Focus As we head further into 2015, we wish to take a moment to thank all the donors who graciously gave to the Northland Public Library Foundation during the year-end campaign. Your generous giving this year greatly surpassed that of last year, and we are very excited about the number of new donors this year! For nearly 30 years, the Foundation has been the fundraising arm for the Library and with this support we are able to offer the quality and variety of programming and services you, our patrons, have grown to expect. We are always touched by the stories you share with us; how the Library has made a positive impact on your life…people of all ages who have a special memory or connection to Northland…how our resources helped someone find a new job or change careers…how the laughter of a small child who is learning to read resonated in the children’s department. You may have noticed the leaves scattered about the newsletter located by some program titles. Each one of these leaves represents the Foundation’s support of that particular program. These leaves represent your dollars at work, helping us enhance our offerings as we continue to grow! Thank you for keeping the Northland “tree” healthy and vibrant.

How We Work Northland Public Library is the second largest library in the county with over 200,000 items in circulation. The Technical Services Department helps organize this collection. This department includes seven employees. The goal is to maintain a level of standardization consistent with the Library of Congress, Allegheny County libraries, and Northland circulation, adult, and children’s departments. So, what exactly do we do? All library materials are processed by Technical Services. This includes new materials chosen by adult and children’s librarians plus items that are donated by the community. Processing includes: receiving, invoicing, and sorting orders; barcoding, dating, and property stamping; cataloging; labeling; covering books; packaging AV materials; and preparing memorial items. In addition, Technical Services ensures that every item is programmed for self-checkout and future circulation throughout Allegheny County. The materials that we process include books, audio books, magazines, newspapers, DVDs, CDs, playaways and playaway videos.
