At Your Library

Feature Focus We are pleased to introduce Kelley Moten, the new Director of Library Services at Northland! She has lived in the North Hills area most of her life. Her previous position was Executive Director of the Carnegie Library of McKeesport, so she’s quite happy to be returning to the North Hills area. Kelley received her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh. She worked in retail management for about 20 years, then returned to the University of Pittsburgh to earn an MLIS (Masters of Library & Information Science) in 2011. An internship at the Carnegie Library of McKeesport turned into an Assistant Director position there, which led to an appointment as Executive Director when the long-time director retired at the end of 2013. This new position is an opportunity for Kelley to have more

interaction with patrons and staff, which is what she enjoys most about being a librarian. She will be overseeing the Circulation, Children & Young Adult & Adult Departments at Northland. Her favorite books include One Door Away From Heaven by Dean Koontz, The Supremes at Earl’s All You Can Eat by Edward Kelsey Moore and An Irish Country Doctor by Patrick Taylor.

New landscaping features have been installed outside at Northland, stop by to see our latest improvements.

Patron Feedback: “Northland is the BEST library I’ve ever been in. It has the friendliest and most helpful staff I have ever encountered and I’ve been to a lot of libraries!” I always say, “The sun is bright, the sky is blue, and it’s always nice to talk to you! I’ll be happy as can be if you will check a book for me!” – Fred Mays

The North Hills Art Center has a temporary art display in the upper level of the library.

Volunteer Focus Name: Yuri Tamama Volunteer’s Assignment and Schedule: Yuri volunteers in the Adopt A Row (AAR) program and is also a Summer Reading Club

(SRC) volunteer. Yuri has a regular once a week schedule for AAR and assists in the SRC with various fun programs and offers customer service and support as an aide in the Children’s Department. In a few words, why do you volunteer at Northland Library?

Yuri volunteers at Northland because she enjoys reading and helping others. As Yuri states, “Reading takes me on a trip to a variety of other worlds from factual and historical to whimsical and fanciful.” At school, Yuri belongs to a book club and enjoys discussing with others the books that she reads. Because helping others is a forte of Yuri’s, volunteering at the Summer Reading Club makes her happy knowing that she helps someone and makes their day better. Northland is delighted that Yuri plans to continue volunteering and being a proud member of the library.

Beyond the Stacks According to a 2014 Pew Research Center study and subsequent article, “E-reading Rises as Device Ownership Jumps,” 28% of American adults have read an eBook in the past year. But according to a previous Pew study, 58% of all library card holders did not know whether or not their library provided e-books. Northland provides access to thousands of e-books. The biggest and most popular way to borrow eBooks with your Northland library card is by using the OverDrive app available in your app store for free. Overdrive provides bestsellers, popular fiction and nonfiction, audiobooks, and lots of children’s and young adult titles. If you don’t have a particular title in mind and just want to browse, the Overdrive catalog is very user-friendly, with lots of genre listings, cover art, summaries and sample pages. Most titles are Kindle-compatible. To browse our Overdrive catalog, go to http://acla.lib.overdrive.com/ Most of your questions about how to get started borrowing e-books will be answered on our E-books page. Go to www.northlandlibrary.org, and under the “E-Resources” tab, click on “E-Books”. Happy e-reading!
