A PUBLICATION OF NORTHLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY
Northland is excited to attend the Borough of Franklin Park’s Community Day at Blueberry Park on Saturday, June 28 from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Come out to the library’s pavilion at the park and hear storytellers, participate in science experiments, and learn about new library resources.
Beyond the Stacks: Each month we will feature a different library database, or other on-line resource. These information treasures are not free on the Internet, but are free if you go through Northland’s website and use your library card. MasterFILE Complete
We’ve all done it. You need a new dehumidifier, or toaster, or camera. You wish you could check Consumer Reports for a product review, but don’t have the time to drive to the library. Well, you don’t have to; the library will come to you. Consumer Reports is one of more than 2200 magazines available in full-text on MasterFILE Complete, one of Northland’s online databases. It is available free with your library card. In addition to popular magazines such as Consumer Reports, Time, Sports Illustrated, Popular Science (and hundreds more), MasterFILE Complete also carries scholarly journals, newspapers, images, and primary source documents. Back issues of certain magazines go back to the 1920’s. You can use MasterFILE Complete to find articles that you remember reading and want to refer to again, to learn more about or to verify information by locating a reliable source. MasterFILE Complete is a treasure-trove for students as it contains reliable, often scholarly, information, and because it formats citations for footnotes and bibliographies according to MLA, APA, and other style manuals. MasterFILE Complete offers simple or advanced searches. It lets you set up an account where you create folders, save searches, and create search alerts (sending you an email whenever an article on certain topic is published). There are 29 different languages in which to display the interface, and most full-text articles can be listened to by clicking the listen button. To access this database, you must go through our website at www.northlandlibrary.org. Use the search box to find MasterFILE Complete, and enter your library card number when prompted. If you want to narrow your search to a specific magazine, such as Consumer Reports, use the “Advanced Search” feature, and type the name of the magazine in the “Publication” box. As always, call us with your questions at 412-366-8100 ext. 113 or email us at npladultserv@einetwork.net.

Film Series at Northland TRAVEL FILM
On Wednesday, June 18 at 2 p.m., join us as we travel to St. Petersburg, Russia, known as “The Venice of the North,” because it was built on a marsh that contained over 45 islands. Before Moscow, St. Petersburg was the capital of Russia and all of the emperors (Tsars) lived here. To accommodate royalty, many palaces and castles were built. We’ll tour the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood with its multicolored onion domes, built on the spot where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated. From there we’ll tour Peter the Great’s Winter Palace, better known as ‘the hermitage,’ this art museum is one of the largest and most magnificent museums/buildings in the world. We will then travel to the Summer Palace (Peterhof), also known as the “Russian Versailles.” It is one of the most ornate and beautiful palaces in the world with its magnificent park and world renowned fountains. No registration required. Refreshments will be served.
FOREIGN FILM
Our feature film this month will be a French farce entitled, The Dinner Game. Every Wednesday Pierre and his friends invite the daftest person they can find to dinner. This week Pierre wants to preview his friend’s selection, however, Pierre has back problems just before the competition. It’s too late to tell the dolt not to come, and when he arrives, he ingratiates himself into the situation by trying to help the disabled Pierre, which only makes matters worse. Hilarity ensues. This film is guaranteed to make you laugh. The movie’s concept was later made into the Hollywood feature film, Dinner for Schmucks. Please join us on Wednesday, June 11 at 1:30 p.m. No registration is required. Refreshments will be served.
Featured Adult Programming:
Registration is required for the following free adult programs except where noted. You may register online, in person at the Adult Reference desk or by calling 412-366-8100 extension 113.
WISE WALK
Week nine of the Wise Walk will be on Wednesday, June 4 at Pie Traynor Field at 9:30 a.m. The following Wednesday, June 11 the group will meet at Pie Traynor Field at 9:30 a.m. for the last walk and then those who wish, will gather for lunch at the North Park Boathouse. Refreshments will be available at the library for those who are not going to lunch. This event was cosponsored by the Allegheny County Library Association, AARP and UPMC.
ESTATE PLANNING: TEN IMPORTANT TIPS & TEN COMMON MISTAKES
For some people, estate planning can raise a number of questions. What do living trusts have to do with estate planning? If I have a will, do I need an estate plan? Can’t I just trust my surviving family members to “do the right thing?” These questions and more will be made clear when Attorney Claire Johnson Saenz speaks about estate planning on Thursday, June 12 at 7 p.m. Attorney Saenz co-founded a successful law practice in the Wexford area and then established her own practice, also in Wexford. She can reduce any complex legal terms to easily understood language and will explain why it’s important to correct the most common estate planning mistakes.
AN EVENING WITH AUTHOR KATHLEEN GEORGE
Author Kathleen George, one of Pittsburgh’s treasures has said, “all writers are crazy; all theatre people are crazy.” Crazy or not, Kathleen George has managed a highly successful career in both fields as professor of theatre and writing at the University of Pittsburgh and author of seven popular Pittsburgh-based mysteries as well as other works of fiction and non-fiction. Born in Johnstown, Pa., George had a novel about the Johnstown Flood percolating in her mind for almost 25 years. Putting it all together in time for the 125th anniversary of the devastating tragedy, she has just published The Johnstown Girls, to high praise. Reviewers have called the work “complex and rewarding storytelling that pays tribute to not only the magnitude of the disastrous flood but also the resilience of Johnstown and its citizens.” On Monday, June 23, at 7 p.m., Northland and the Pittsburgh Chapter of Sisters in Crime will host an evening with Kathleen George as she describes the background and inspiration for her story about the Johnstown flood’s last known survivor who always believed, in spite of contrary reports that her twin sister had somehow survived.
A DOUGHBOY’S FOOTLOCKER: LOOKING BACK ON WORLD WAR I
One hundred years ago, World War I began in Europe. America entered the war in 1916 and the soldiers of the American Expeditionary Force that took part in that war were called Doughboys. They fought under very difficult conditions and had numerous articles of equipment they had to carry with them at all times–rifles, ammunition, food rations, eating tins, gas masks, shovels, back packs (or haversack) helmets, water bottles and documents. On Wednesday, June 25, at 7:00 p.m., Tim Neff of Soldiers and Sailors Museum will bring a World War I footlocker to Northland to show actual belongings of a soldier from that war. He will describe a soldier’s life during World War I and will give the audience the opportunity to handle the various articles from the trunk. The trunk brings to life the difficulties the soldiers endured during the Great War. This is a program for all ages as we note the anniversary of a world-wide conflict that was called “The War to End All Wars.”
TUESDAY NIGHT BOOK DISCUSSION
On June 3 at 7 p.m., the group will discuss Frozen in Time: An Epic Story of Survival and a Modern Quest for Lost Heroes of World War II by Mitchell Zuckoff. On Nov. 5, 1942, a U.S. cargo plane slammed into the Greenland Ice Cap. Four days later, the B-17 assigned to the search-and-rescue mission was lost and also crashed. Miraculously, all nine men on board survived, and the U.S. military launched a daring rescue operation. But after picking up one man, the rescue plane flew into a storm and vanished. Frozen in Time tells the story of these crashes, the fate of the survivors, and the expedition that brought them to safety. Our selection for July is The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness and Murder by Charles Graeber.

In February of 2000, Bobbie Smithco stumbled upon Tastefully Simple when visiting the Mall of America with her children. At the time, she had a career with a major east coast airline, but thought joining Tastefully Simple would be a fun way to make some extra money. A year and a half later, 9/11 occurred and the airline industry suddenly changed. She no longer had her airline job and her spouse encouraged her to work for Tastefully Simple full-time. Tastefully Simple sells delicious products and offers meal-time solutions through inhome parties, on-line orders, corporate gifts and fundraising. In addition to the delicious ‘open and enjoy’ products, they offer an expanded Gluten Free product line, many natural seasonings, meal-time recipe solutions and great gifts. As a Tastefully Simple consultant, Bobbie is happy to partner with Northland Library and support the Foundation’s fundraising efforts because she feels the library has so many resources and so much to offer everyone. Bobbie’s children grew-up loving to read books from Northland Library. They also enjoyed the summer reading program, story-time and the many educational programs. She feels that it is great to give back and a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the Library’s fundraising initiative. Bobbie and her husband Tom are Marshall Twp. residents and have been members of the library for many years.
