IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PATRONS: LIMITED SERVICES AND CLOSURE NOTICE Final System Upgrade Scheduled for March 22-25, 2014
From March 22-25, Allegheny County public libraries will be performing system upgrades across all county libraries. This will be the final phase in the project. During the final upgrade, we will have limited services on Saturday, March 22 and Sunday, March 23. Northland will be closed on Monday, March 24 and Tuesday, March 25. We thank you for your patience as we work to make the library experience better for all patrons. On March 22-23 (Saturday & Sunday only), patrons will have access to: •
Basic check out with library card only. No alternative IDs will be accepted in place of a library card during this time due to a system outage during the upgrade.
•
No library materials will have a due date between 3/22 – 3/25, so late fees will not accrue for those days. Patrons may return materials as usual; however returns will not be cleared from patron accounts until the outage/system upgrade concludes.
•
There will be no disruption to Wi-Fi or the Computer Center.
•
The Book Nook will be available.
On March 22-25 (throughout the upgrade), patrons will not have access to: •
The eiNetwork Catalog* will be unavailable to both the public and library staff during the system upgrade.

Self-service checkout stations within the library will be unavailable.
•
NOMADs (offsite lending libraries) will not function during the system upgrade. ***Note: Remote book drops will be emptied as usual; however check in will also be delayed until we resume operations.
*The eiNetwork Catalog is a county-wide catalog system that allows patrons to look up materials, and monitor their library account details for holds, fines, items in transit, etc.
TAI CHI
Our Tai Chi classes at the Activities Center in Franklin Park’s Blueberry Park will continue on Monday mornings in March at 11:00 a.m. to noon. Certified instructor, Vincenza Furst, will lead this popular series of gentle exercise postures based on the centuries-old Chinese practice designed to improve the body and the mind. INDIAN COOKING CLASS
Ann Manchella’s popular vegetarian cooking class will feature Okra Curry on Thursday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. Joins us for some tasty samples and learn about the health benefits of vegetarianism. Film Series at Northland TRAVEL FILM SERIES
On Wednesday, March 19 at 2:00 p.m., we travel to New York City. We’ll tour many of its landmarks, beginning with the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. At the Tenements Museum, we’ll see how the immigrants worked and lived. The largest tomb in North America is Grant’s Tomb. We’ll see if Grant is actually buried there. Then we’ll learn all about the Brooklyn Bridge. In the past, NYC was guarded by many forts, including Clinton’s Castle and Governor’s Island, which are featured. Then we’ll stroll through Central Park, and visit Wall Street, where Federal Hall once housed the U.S. Congress. For architectural lovers, we’ll see the Flatiron, Empire, and Chrysler buildings, as well as, Rockefeller Center. So come join us. No reservation for this program is required.
FOREIGN FILM SERIES
This month’s film is a French Canadian comedy entitled, “Starbuck.” It is about Dave Wozniak, a 42-yearold man whose past comes back to haunt him. A habitual sperm donor in his youth, he discovers that he’s the biological father of 533 children, 142 of whom are trying to force the fertility clinic to reveal the true identity of the prolific donor, code-name Starbuck. Winner of nine awards, this movie is about a lovable but perpetual screw up who finally decides to take control of his life. Join us on Wednesday, March 12 at 1:30 p.m. No reservation is required and refreshments will be served.

On Thursday, March 13 at 7:00 p.m., eight local resident authors will briefly describe their journeys from ideas and interests to actual published work. From the true crime story of the notorious killer, Stanley Hoss, to Pittsburgh’s important contributions in the allied victory in World War I, to the history of Wolverine Mechanical Toys produced here in Pittsburgh, to a woman’s joyful discovery that overcoming her fears could lead to her life’s dreams…and much more. JANICE LANE PALKO has successfully published St. Anne’s Day, a romantic comedy and A Shepherd’s Song, a Christmas romance. Her latest book is Cape Cursed, a romantic suspense novel. TERRY MOWREY’S beautifully illustrated book, Wolverine Mechanical Toys and the Story of the Wolverine Supply and Manufacturing Company describes the once robust and innovative North Side Pittsburgh toy manufacturer and its products. BARBARA RAUTNER’S book, To Walk With Thee: Songs of the Spirit is a collection of spiritual reflections in poetic form. DONNA BILLINGS discovered her life’s passion in her early 60’s. Her book title says it all: Red and Purple Hiking Boots: An Older Woman’s Trek to “It’s Never Too Late.” ELIZABETH WILLIAMS’ book, Pittsburgh in World War I: Arsenal of the Allies is the historical portrait of the important contributions made by Pittsburgh and its citizens during that perilous time. RICHARD ENGBERG’S book, The Contrarian Investor: How I Made Profits During the Great Recession describes the techniques he developed over time in picking stocks by trusting his intuition based on years of study and observation. MARY MCCARTHY has published a book of poetry, Crazy Odds, as a Kindle e-book. She will share some of her favorite poems.

AN EVENING OF MUSIC WITH CYNTHIA DEALMEIDA
Cynthia DeAlmeida has been Principal Oboe of the Pittsburgh Symphony since 1991. Since joining the Pittsburgh Symphony, Ms. DeAlmeida has been featured as a soloist in concertos by Bach, Haydn, Strauss and Mozart and has premiered and recorded with the symphony two concertos commissioned especially for her and her instrument. Her artistry is superb and it is Northland Library’s good fortune to feature her in a program on Wednesday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m. Her enthusiasm for music and the oboe, in particular, is unbounded as well as her pride in the Pittsburgh Symphony. She will share with her audience the ways in which her instrument fits into and is featured in symphonic music. And she will play selections that will demonstrate her unique talent. DOUBLEHEADER: GREGORY GIBSON KENNEY BRINGS BASEBALL HEROES TO LIFE
Join us on Sunday, March 30 at 2:00 p.m., for actor Gregory Gibson Kenney’s doubleheader performance for the entire family, “Roberto Clemente: A Chat with an Angel” and “Pops: We Were Family” about the life of Willy Stargell. Greg is a favorite with Northland audiences of all ages; he is usually here each year. If you are not familiar with his work, Greg is an actor who does one man shows about famous black Americans. In about a half-hour he brings his characters to life and involves his audience in his performance. He always gives his audience a chance to ask questions or tell their stories on the topic at the end of his performance. Greg has performed all over the east coast and is a regular performer at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. He will be a featured performer at the Three Rivers Storytelling Festival in August this year. For more information about Greg, you can check his website www.educateus.org. TAX PREPARATION ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE
Northland Public Library, in cooperation with AARP, is once again offering free tax preparation assistance for senior citizens and low-income residents on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. now through April 15. This service is offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and we cannot guarantee that everyone needing help can be accommodated on any given day. A signup sheet will be located outside of the lower library entrance. There will be no income tax services on Tuesday, March 25 due to library closure for system upgrades.

LET THE GRAVESTONES SPEAK: TRACING YOUR FAMILY HISTORY THROUGH CEMETERIES
Have you heard about “Find a Grave,” the website that contains listings of cemeteries and graves from all over the world? At the end of 2013, the site contained over 106 million burial records worldwide. Many of the cemetery records contain maps and photographs. Individual grave records may contain birth and death dates, biographical information, cemetery and plot information and photographs. On Thursday, April 3 at 7:00 p.m., Elissa Scalise Powell, certified genealogist and trustee of the Board for Certification of Genealogists, will explain the navigation techniques you need to find your way through “Find a Grave” to locate those elusive ancestors you’ve been searching for. Elissa is an active member of the North Hills Genealogists and always has helpful advice and suggestions for those who are just beginning a search for family records as well as for the more advanced searchers who need a few more pieces to complete the puzzle. TUESDAY NIGHT BOOK DISCUSSION
On March 4, at 7:00 p.m., the Tuesday Night Book Group will discuss Thank You for Your Service by David Finkel. In his first book, Finkel embedded with the men of the 2-16 Infantry Battalion in Iraq, during the infamous “surge,” a grueling 15-month tour that changed them all forever. He creates an indelible portrait of what life after war is like—not just for these soldiers, but for their wives, widows, children, friends, and the professionals who are trying, and to a great degree failing, to undo the damage that has been done. SECOND FRIDAY BOOK DISCUSSION
Adventure writer, Peter Heller, has written his first novel, The Dog Stars, a riveting tale of a pilot living in a world filled with loss. In a post-apocalyptic world, a flu pandemic has killed off most of the world’s population. The story’s hero longs for earlier days when a random transmission beams through his radio, giving him hope of better things “out there.” Bring your brown bag lunch at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, March 14. The library provides a beverage. At noon, we’ll begin our informal discussion of this fascinating novel. Our book for discussion in April will be Transatlantic by Colum McCann, chosen by the Allegheny County Library Association for its yearly One Book, One Community selection. Book groups and discussion groups all over the county will read the same book. Colum McCann will be a featured speaker on March 10 at the Monday Night Lecture Series at Heinz Hall.
MYSTERY LOVERS BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
If you like mysteries or crime fiction, you’ll enjoy this group’s informal discussions. On Thursday, March 20 at 7:00 p.m., the group will discuss The Murder Book by Jonathan Kellerman, featuring LA psychologist-detective, Alex Delaware. Milo Sturgis, Delaware’s long-time friend and colleague, is haunted by an earlier case that was never solved. When someone sends a picture of the crime scene, they decide to investigate again. A classic puzzler, this mystery will keep you guessing. In April, the group will discuss the famous Agatha Christie classic, And Then There Were None.

The Serious Readers Book Discussion group finds that works of historical, economic and political significance provide the opportunity for personal examination and analysis of fateful past events that have had a lasting effect on today’s United States – politically, economically and culturally. On their list of introspective reading are Common Sense, The Federalist Papers, In Praise of Folly, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, and Travels With Epicurus. Did you know that Northland Children’s Librarians visit preschools and daycare centers? Almost every week our librarians take stories, fingerplays, action rhymes, songs and games out into the community to add a little library zip to early literacy programs in our service area. We also do school visits, and provide assemblies and interactive storytelling programs for students in classrooms from Kindergarten through High School. TEEN TECH WEEK: MARCH 9-15, 2014
Teen Tech Week is when libraries showcase all of the great non-print resources and services that are available to teens and their families. This year, the theme is “DIY @ Your Library.” Northland will participate in Teen Tech Week on Wednesday, March 12, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. We will use our computer lab in the Board Room to explore group gaming and programming with www.scratch.ie. On Thursday, March 13, we will be back on our usual Teen Thursday space to create our own public service announcements to be posted on our website. Some ideas are commercials for Teen Thursdays, Book trailers, promotion of teen services at Northland, upcoming National Library Week, Free Comic Book Day, and the creation of our Teen Advisory Group. The teens will direct and write the scripts for these projects. Teen Thursdays: Northland’s new program for ‘tweens and teens. Teen Thursdays offer a variety of activities each week from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. No registration is required. Name: Casey Mrazik Residence: McCandless Volunteer Assignment: Monthly decoration of Rama exhibit In a few words, why do you volunteer at Northland Library? “I am a junior at North Allegheny High School and I started volunteering through LeadersNow International*, a local group that focuses on the community and provides leadership development in young women. Since then, I have volunteered at the Library for almost two years, decorating the beloved “Rama”
on a monthly basis.” “Coming in once a month to decorate Rama has been enjoyable and extremely rewarding as I become more creative and see the smiles Rama puts on the faces of librarygoers. I also owe Rama success to my fellow LeadersNow International members who help me decorate on occasion, especially Kailey Kaparakos.” *LeadersNow International is a membership based organization that is open to any girl in grades 7 through 12. Membership in the organization provides young women with comprehensive training in character development, leadership skills, style, poise, etiquette, career exploration, mentoring, and service to the community.
RAMA IS NORTHLAND’S CAMEL
If you’ve ever wondered about the camel on display in the lower library, we hope you’ll enjoy this background sketch. Following the dona tion of the camel to Northland, Rama was named as such as a representation of one of the most widely worshipped Hindu deities. The name is also the embodiment of chivalry and virtue and was conceived as a model of reason, right action and desirable virtues. To link the presence of a camel to the Library, research revealed that camels are used to deliver books to nomadic people in remote desert villages of Kenya. The terrain in Kenyan regions can make roads impassable by traditional vehicles, so camels make the trek carrying books on their backs. The illiteracy rate among people living in nomadic areas is over 80% and over 45% of school-aged children are not enrolled in school. In addition to Kenya using animals to facilitate traveling bookmobiles, Colombia uses donkeys for a “biblioburro.” Northland’s bookmobile stationed at Marshall Elementary School on Fridays and at North Hills Village Shopping Center in Ross Township on Saturdays is our “RAMA” and another of the many resources that magnifies the library’s value to community patrons.
