A PUBLICATION OF NORTHLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY
NORTHLAND HAS A NEW WEBSITE!
We are pleased to announce that we have a new interactive website full of great new features. The homepage has a calendar that displays all of our activities and programs when you put the curser over a day. Visit the site to find great new fiction and DVD releases, see library hours, access your account and search the catalog. The website also connects you directly to Northland’s digital and e- collections. Please visit Northlandlibrary.org and get acquainted!
Beyond the Stacks: Each month we will feature a different library database, or other on-line resource. These information treasures are not free on the Internet, but are free if you go through Northland’s website and use your library card. Haven’t heard the soundtrack from Frozen yet? Listen to it on Hoopla. Never saw Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski? Watch it on Hoopla! Hoopla is a digital media service that lets you stream movies, TV shows and music content through all major browsers and/ or the Hoopla app for Apple or Android devices. Within the app patrons also have the option to download content to enjoy when they don’t have Internet connectivity. (The mobile hoopla app can be found in the app store on your iOS device and in the Google Play store on your Android device. Search for “hoopla digital” to find and download the app.) Anyone with a valid library card will be able to borrow eight items per month. Video content can be borrowed for two days. Music content can be borrowed for seven days. All titles are always available -- no holds, no waiting -- and the items will be returned for you at the end of the lending period, so there are never any late fees. To borrow items from Hoopla, either open the application on your device or visit www. hoopladigital.com on your laptop or computer to go to the hoopla website and click on “Sign Up.” You will need a valid library card, an e-mail address, and you will need to create a password. That’s all you need! There are no fees involved—just your library card. Also, Hoopla has no ads or commercials as part of its content. For more information, visit the Hoopla website www.hoopladigital.com, view an instructional video on youtube.com/hoopladigital, or ask one of the librarians the next time you visit the library.

In Paris, we’ll visit the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, Arc de Triomphe, and lastly the Louvre. From there, we will see the Chateau d’ Usse, which was the inspiration for the tale of Sleeping Beauty and the Chateau de Villandry, with one of the most enviable vegetable gardens in the world. In Spain, we start in Barcelona with its unique Gaudi architecture. Granada is next with a stop at the Alhambra, one of the largest Islamic palaces in the world. In Seville, we’ll tour the world’s largest gothic cathedrals. In Portugal, we visit Lisbon and all its distinctive neighborhoods. The trip ends in Fatima to learn about and see the site of one of the most famous miracles. No registration required. Refreshments will be served.
FOREIGN FILM
Please join us on Wednesday, May 14 at 1:30 p.m. for a film from Saudi Arabia called Wadjda. This film is about Wadjda, a fun loving 10-year-old girl living in a suburb of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. She has her heart set on buying a beautiful green bicycle but her mother won’t allow it fearing repercussions from a society that views bicycles as harmful to a girl’s virtues. Wadjda decides to raise the money for the bike herself by entering the schools’ Koran recitation competition. The competition isn’t going to be easy for her but she refuses to give in, determined to fight for her dreams. The film is the first film directed by a Saudi woman and is shot completely in Saudi Arabia. This film has won 18 awards and was nominated for 17 others. No registration is required. Refreshments will be served.
THE STORY OF WOLVERINE TOYS
The Wolverine Supply and Manufacturing Company was founded in Pittsburgh in 1903 by Benjamin Bain. The company designed and manufactured household utensils and broom holders as well as the tools and dies to make them. Bain also found the opportunity to begin a toy manufacturing business and in 1913, he purchased property in Manchester where he constructed a large three-story toy factory. The building still stands today. Wolverine Toy Company manufactured sturdy hand-operated mechanical tin (or pressed steel) construction-type toys for boys that would eventually be sold in major department and toy stores across the country. Eventually, Bain added vehicle toys such as trains, boats, trucks and cars that were all powered by a spring-powered motor. The company later branched out into toys for girls. Fortunately, Terry Mowrey, of the North Hills has been a collector of these fascinating toys for many years and has published a beautifully illustrated book about Wolverine Mechanical Toys which features the history of the company and the toys that many children cherished. Join Terry on Thursday, May 8 at 7:00 p.m. as he displays his collection of colorful mechanical Wolverine Toys and describes the early history of the North Side company that found great success for many years. If you have any Wolverine Toys in your possession, bring them along for others to see. If you have stories of relatives who worked for the Wolverine Company, bring those along, too.
ALLERGIES AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO ASTHMA
Asthma and allergies often go hand-inhand. Allergic asthma is a type of asthma that is triggered by allergens such as pollen or mold spores. According to the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, half of the 20 million Americans with asthma have allergic asthma. On Monday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m., Dr. Stephen Murphey will present an overview of allergies that cause asthma or trigger asthma attacks and the current research and treatment options that are available. Dr. Murphey received the National Outstanding Volunteer Clinical Faculty Award from the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology.
READINGS IN ALTERNATIVE EVERYTHING
SECOND FRIDAY BOOK DISCUSSION
If you’re interested in mysteries of the mind, holistic healing, mind/body/spirit connections and other alternative ways of looking at ourselves and our world, you’re invited to join a new discussion group at Northland Library, facilitated by Richard Kajuth, former education consultant and lifelong student of esoteric subjects. Join this new discussion group on the second Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. On May 13, the group will begin disscussion on Deepak Chopra’s Reinventing the Body, Resurrecting the Soul: How to Create A New You. No registration is necessary.
TUESDAY NIGHT BOOK DISCUSSION On May 6, at 7:00 p.m., the group will discuss On Looking: Eleven Walks with Expert Eyes by Alexandra Horowitz. Horowitz shows how to practice, as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle put it, “the observation of trifles.” The book is structured around a series of eleven walks through her Manhattan neighborhood with experts on a wide range of subjects--an urban sociologist, an artist, a geologist, a physician, and a sound designer. She also walks with a child and a dog to see the world as they perceive it. She reveals what it means to be an expert observer. Our selection for June 3 is Frozen in Time: An Epic Story of Survival and a Modern Quest for Lost Heroes of World War II by Mitchell Zuckoff.
Harold Fry, retired sales rep and beleaguered husband, decides one morning to walk 600 miles across England to save an old friend. It might not work, but that’s hardly the point. Harold in endearingly unprepared for the journey but wins us over with his classic anti-heroism. In Rachel Joyce’s novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, the author shows that walking for while in Harold Fry’s shoes, we might find that our own shoes fit a bit better. Bring your brown bag lunch on Friday, May 9 at 11:30 a.m. We’ll begin our informal discussion at noon. The book for discussion in June is The Absolutist by John Boyne.
MYSTERY LOVERS BOOK DISCUSSION
If you like mysteries or crime fiction, you’ll enjoy this group’s informal discussions. On Thursday, May 15 at 7 p.m., the group will discuss Junkyard Dogs by Craig Johnson. This is Johnson’s sixth mystery featuring Wyoming sheriff, Walt Longmire. A severed thumb points the way to a surprisingly twisty mystery that involves junkmen, land developers and a creepy ex-convict. Longmire may be contemplating early retirement, but readers will demand that he serve out his full term of service—and run for reelection. In June, the group will discuss A Cold Treachery by Charles Todd.
LIBRARY HOURSCLOSINGS & CHANGES Northland Library will be closed to the public for Staff Development Day on Friday, May 16, 2014. We will also be closed on Sunday, May 25 (start of summer hours) and Monday, May 26 for Memorial Day.

Volunteer Spotlight
Name: Clara Pearle Soergel
Residence: Marshall Township
Volunteer Assignment: Book Nook Volunteer
In a few words, why do you volunteer at Northland Library? “When I retired from my position as secretary and receptionist at North Allegheny Senior High School in 1995, I was looking for something in the vicinity that would keep me busy and that I would enjoy doing. I have enjoyed my experience in the Book Nook ever since its creation and look forward to continuing with that endeavor – where I can always expect to meet and talk with old friends and neighbors on a weekly basis – and also having a constant selection of great reading material at my fingertips!”
Clara Pearle has been a volunteer at Northland Library since 1996 and has welcomed patrons in the Book Nook since 2005. Prior to this, she was one of the many committed volunteers who assisted in tasks related to the semi-annual Northland Book Sale.
