November 2014

A PUBLICATION OF NORTHLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY

Northland Library will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 27.

Beyond the Stacks: Each month we will feature a different library database, or other on-

line resource. These information treasures are not free on the Internet, but are free if you go through Northland’s website and use your library card.

Are you among the one-third of Americans who can’t name any of their great-grandparents? Are you part of the 78% of Americans who don’t know what any of their grandparents did for a living? In spite of the rise of genealogy as a hobby, and TV shows like Finding Your Roots and Who Do You Think You Are?, Americans know surprisingly little about their family history. Northland can help change that. With winter approaching, there’s no better time to begin learning about your family’s roots. In addition to more than 600 books on genealogy, Northland also provides two databases: HeritageQuest and Ancestry Library Edition. Both databases provide detailed U.S. Census information from 1790 to 1940. And each database provides unique databases and research documents. HeritageQuest contains more than 28,000 family histories, local histories, church records, military records, city directories, the Periodical Source Index Archive [PERSI] (a subject index to millions of genealogy and local history periodicals published between 1800 and 2009), Revolutionary War Pension Application Records and Bounty-Land Warrants, Freedman’s Bank Records, and the LexisNexis Serial set. Residents of our five supporting municipalities—Ross, McCandless, Franklin Park, Marshall, and Bradford Woods—can use HeritageQuest from home. Ask at the Adult Reference Desk for instructions on how you can access this invaluable resource from home. HeritageQuest can be accessed by anyone if you are in our building. Go to our website www.northlandlibrary.org, click on “E-RESOURCES”, then click on “HeritageQuest Online.” Ancestry Library Edition contains more than 8,700 databases including state, county, and territorial censuses, border crossings, naturalization petitions, passport applications, collections from nearly 30 foreign countries, military records, birth, marriage, and death records, and much, much more. Ancestry Library Edition can be accessed only from within any of the public libraries in Allegheny County. When at Northland, go to www.northlandlibrary.org, click on “E-RESOURCES”, “Databases A-Z”, then “Ancestry Library.”

Film Series at Northland TRAVEL FILM

Stop in on Wednesday, November 19 at 2 p.m., as we take a royal tour of Mexico with former President Felipe Calderon. Our trip will start at Los Pinos, Mexico’s version of the White House. From there we’ll view the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza and Palenque where we’ll learn the secret of the Mayans that changed how we look at their culture today. With Calderon leading us, we’ll go spelunking a quarter of a mile down a pit cave and go scuba diving to tour a sinkhole used for human sacrifice. Puerto Vallarta’s famous for a Mexican tradition called the “Voladores de Papantla.” In Mariposa, we’ll see where all the Monarch butterflies have migrated. From there we travel to Chihuahua to visit the Copper Canyon, which is larger and deeper than the Grand Canyon. The city of Tequila is famous for its drink of the same name. Refreshments will be served. No registration is required.

FOREIGN FILM

Join us on Wednesday, November 12 at 1:30 p.m. as we enjoy a comedy from Mexico entitled Instructions Not Included, about an Acapulco playboy, Valentin, who leads a happy life of philandering until a former fling leaves a baby on his doorstep. Valentin then heads to Hollywood, accidently becoming a stuntman, while trying to find the mother of his daughter. As Valentin raises his daughter, he is forced to grow up himself. They become inseparable. After a number of years, Maggie’s biological mother shows up, ready to take her back. Valentin vows to fight for custody by any means necessary. Winner of five international acting awards, this film is both funny and touching. No registration required. Refreshments will be served.

NON-SURGICAL, REGENERATIVE PROCEDURE FOR PAIN

Last year on Channel 4 News, Dr. Paul Lieber, MD, of Rehabilitation and Pain Specialists, explained in detail the nonsurgical, regenerative procedures used by the physicians in his practice to treat painful joint injuries and degenerative conditions, such as osteoarthritis. The procedures utilize a patient’s own stem cells or blood platelets to help heal damaged tissues, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, spinal disc, or bone. Previously used primarily by athletes who wished to heal from their injuries and pain as quickly as possible, the nonsurgical treatment has proved highly successful in returning patients to a functional lifestyle. The procedure may reverse some of the arthritic process and help many people avoid a major surgery. On Monday, November 17, at 7 p.m., hear Dr. Lieber explain this promising pain treatment and ask questions about the ways in which these specialists help restore movement and mobility to their patients.

Depending on the project you choose, the fee will range from $8 to $30, payable by cash or check at the workshop. Adults, teens, beginners and advanced beaders are welcome.

TUESDAY NIGHT BOOK DISCUSSION

Thomas Day, an 18th-century British writer and radical, knew exactly the sort of woman he wanted to marry. She would be pure and virginal, yet tough and hardy. She would live with him in an isolated cottage and be completely subservient to his whims. When his proposals were rejected by eligible society women, he adopted two orphans from the Foundling Hospital and attempted to make them into the perfect wife. Join us on November 4 at 7 p.m. when we discuss How to Create the Perfect Wife: Britain’s Most Ineligible Bachelor and his Enlightened Quest to Train the Ideal Mate by Wendy Moore. Our selection for December will be The End-of-Your-Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe.

NEW! READINGS IN ALTERNATIVE EVERYTHING

Interested in mysteries of the mind, holistic healing, mind/body/ spirit connections and other alternative ways of looking at ourselves and our world? Join us on November 11 at 7 p.m. to discuss all this and more! Readings in Alternative Everything will begin studying Life After Death: The Burden of Proof by Deepak Chopra. Come join us to talk about this alluring book.

Started by a local North Hills resident, KnitHope works with North Hills Community Outreach and Light of Life Mission to distribute hand knitted or crocheted scarves to those in need in our local Pittsburgh community. Northland Library serves as a collection site for the scarves and last year, knitters in our community contributed approximately 350 scarves. Thanks to all who took the time to create a warm scarf for someone who is struggling to meet daily needs. It’s not too early to begin knitting for KnitHope for next year. Volunteering at Northland Volunteer Spotlight

Name: Rosemary McLaughlin Residence: McCandless Volunteer Assignment: Book Sale general help & The Book Nook In a few words, why do you volunteer at Northland Library? “Since I retired in 2005 from my work as an English teacher for 35 years, I have managed to volunteer for Sixth Grade Mentoring, Habitat for Humanity, St. John Neumann Parish and Northland Public Library. Loving books and literature as I do, the Book Nook is a perfect place for me to spend my Wednesday afternoons. My favorite aspect is making reading suggestions to our patrons. Usually that begins a friendly conversation about books-my second favorite topic--next to my grandchildren!” – Rosemary McLaughlin

More about Our Volunteers:

The support and assistance of a multitude of volunteers greatly contribute to Northland Library’s reputation as an established community treasure. Along with Rosemary McLaughlin, many of our volunteers have retired from a variety of professions including business and education. A great deal of our volunteers are students who chose Northland as the venue for their contributions to community service and we proudly boast of those who chose Northland with our offer of working in the solitude of the book shelves, the excitement of helping kids with the Summer Reading Club or returning annually to share their knowledge and commitment during the set-up, tear down and participation to the 3-day book sales. As always, our volunteers are awesome and continue to amaze!

HELP WANTED: Library Donation Pre-Sorter

Become an integral piece of Northland’s successful book sales! As a donation pre-sorter, you will volunteer for 2 hours on Saturdays to “separate the wheat from the chaff.” Pre-sorting will identify those items that are old, out of date, dirty, torn and overall
