Summer Reading Club (SRC) - for children

going into kindergarten through soon-to-be fifth graders!

Check out these great fun programs & activities -

• June 16 4:30 p.m.-5:30 p.m. & July 21-25- 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.-kindergarten-second grades -CSI We are looking for some Children Science Investigators. If your child is going into Kindergarten, First, or Second Grade, this is the club for them. Come participate in some fun hands-on science experiments with other science friends. The first session of CSI takes place June 16-20 from 4:30 p.m. -5:30 p.m. Registration for our five participating municipalities begins May 23. Open registration begins June 9. Register in person at the children’s desk. The program repeats for a second session of CSI which takes place July 21-25 from 10 :00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Registration for our five participating municipalities begins June 30. Open registration begins July 14. Register at the children’s desk. Note: Both sessions are identical. Please register in person at the children’s desk. Space is limited to 15 young scientists per session. This program brought to you through a generous grant from Bentley Systems and the Northland Public Library Foundation.

• June 24 7:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m.-all ages- Jeff the Geode Guy Jeff the Geode Guy is back for a visit! Fresh from a recent trip to the geode mines, this is a presentation you haven’t seen before. As always, geodes will be available for purchase and will be opened in front of you. Pre-registration is not required, but preference will be given to Summer Reading Club participants. This program is brought to you by the Northland Public Library Foundation.

• June 28 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. kindergarten-fifth grades- Family Science Olympiad

FAMILY SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

Come join us for the Second Annual Family Science Olympiad. Families with children going into kindergarten-fifth grade can join us for some science fun. There will be six stations for families to explore, conducting hands-on science experiments. Children must be registered for the Summer Reading Program at Northland and have a valid library card. So join us on Saturday June 28, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for some hands-on science and prizes. Please register in person at the children’s desk. This program is brought to you through a generous grant from Bentley Systems and the Northland Library Foundation.

• Tuesdays, July 1, 8 & 15 from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. -kindergarten-fifth grades- Fizz, Boom, Chess! SRC members in kindergarten - fifth grades are invited to stop by to pick up some useful pointers and play a pick-up game or two. No need to bring a chess set. No registration required.

July 3 – 2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. - third-fifth grades- Real World Angry Birds

Children in third - fifth grades can come and have fun playing a real world version of their favorite digital game, Angry Birds! Registration is required and participants must be registered in the Summer Reading Club. Registration will begin June 20 at the children’s desk. • July 7-11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. - all ages- Movie: Meet the Robinsons Popcorn will be served. No registration is required. • July 7-4:30 p.m.-5:30p.m. - third through fifth grades-

Mission…

Get ready for a whole week of Mission… If your child is going into third, fourth, or fifth grade, this is the club for them. We will have fun hands-on engineering challenges each day. The first session of Mission… takes place July 7- 11 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Registration for our five participating municipalities begins June 16. Open registration begins June 30. The program repeats for a second session of Mission… which takes place August 11 thru 15 from 4:30-5:30p.m. Registration for our five participating municipalities begins July 21. Open registration begins August 4. Note: Both sessions are identical. Please register in person at the children’s desk. Space is limited to 15 young engineers per session. • Tuesdays, July , 8, 15, 22, 29 and August 5 -11:30 a.m.-preschool-third grades- Picture Book Picnic Bring your lunch to the library and enjoy a side of stories, songs and games. For preschool through third grade. No registration is necessary for this free program. This program is held rain or shine; outside if it’s nice weather, inside if it’s stormy or hotter than 85 degrees. • July 10, 17, 24 and 31 -10:00 a.m.- third-fifth grades- Food Crafts with Courtney Summer Reading Club participants in third-fifth grades can come and have fun making food crafts, playing food related games and experimenting with the science of food during this 4 week program. Registration is required. Please register in person at the children’s desk. Bots-Bots-Bots

Come have some crafty fun making your own “spot the bot” robot. We’ll provide lots of materials so you can make yours unique! Get a wristband at the children’s desk to attend this program. • July 16 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. -all ages-

Bubblepalooza

Meet us outside for this drop-in program. We’ll be playing bubble games and making bubble crafts, and perhaps a bubble surprise! Rain date July 17.


• July 18-11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. -ages 5 and up-

Stink-errific STEM

Join us for some Stink-errific STEM activities Friday July 18 from 11:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m. Stink and his friends have tons of way-cool adventures and we will try some science inspired activities. See how you measure up to Stink, join in the Way-Official Moody Stink-a-Thon, and try some Zombie Planting. All activities will take place in the Picture Book area around the tree. Participants must be registered in Northland Library's Summer Reading Club but no advanced registration is required for this program. • July 19-1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.- ages 4 and up- Dogs Get Scared, Too! Most dog bites happen to children. Join our friends from Camp Bow-Wow for stories and give-aways, meet some dogs, and learn how NOT to get bitten. For children ages 4 and up. Space limited, first come, first served. • July 21-12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m.-first through fifth grades

National Aviary

Come enjoy an educational, informative, enlightening program about the life and habitat of several of our tuxedoed friends! And even meet a penguin! Pre-registration is required and all participants must be members of the Summer Reading Club. Register in person at the children’s desk. Enjoy this meet and greet with a penguin and its handler from the National Aviary. Come ready with a question or two and your camera! Things That Creep and Slither

Join Naturalist April Claus as she introduces you to things that creep and slither. This hands-on interactive program introduces you to the reptiles and amphibians of Pennsylvania. Meet and touch some LIVE snakes, toads, turtles and salamanders that are native to Western Pennsylvania. Pre-registration at the children’s desk is required. Participants must be registered members of the Summer Reading Club. This program is brought to you by the Northland

Movie: Jetsons meet the Flintstones

Chemical concoctions discovery day- kindergarten-second grades- Make your own colored sidewalk chalk and silly putty to take home. Chem in a Bag" Discovery Day- second grade and up- Conduct experiments that produce exciting temperature-changing results . For children in second grade and up who are able to attend independently. The zoo visits with some furry, scaly, feathery, and slimy friends! For children in kindergaretn - second grade who are able to attend independently. Must pre-register and MUST be signed up for Summer Reading Club. Please register in person at the children’s desk. "Now You See It, Now You Don't" Club Science program- kindergarten second grades - Create invisible ink drawings, wear special glasses to see rainbows of light, and make Glow-in-the-Dark Slime. For children in kindergarten second grades who are able to attend independently. Must pre-register in person at the children’s desk and MUST be signed up for Summer Reading Club. This program is brought to you by the Northland Public Library Foundation. "Science in a Tube" Club Science program- third grade and up- Experiment with Dry Ice, create Dry Ice bubbles, and see how Carbon Dioxide can put out a fire or blow up balloons. Must pre-register in person at the children’s desk and MUST be signed up for Summer Reading Club. Awesome Owl Science

If you love owls and science this is the program for you! Come to the library and learn about owls, do some crafts and everyone will get their chance to dissect their own owl pellet. Participants must be part of the Summer Reading Club. Please register at the children's desk. Registration begins July 1, 2014. • July 31-2:00 p.m. -all ages- "Before There Was Science" Long before Galileo, Newton and Einstein, people wondered why things happened. Why is the sky far away? Why does the sun come up when the rooster crows? Why do turtles have cracked shells? Join storyteller Mary Morgan Smith to learn some of the answers to questions that ask "Why?" A program for the whole family. No registration is required. • July 31-7:00 p.m.- until ?-all ages-

Hamsterball Derby!

The hamster races are back! Pre-register for the derby at the children’s desk. Registration fee is $2.00 and participants should bring an in-kind donation for Animal Friends. Don’t fret-we have a list of donation suggestions at the children’s desk! As always, no wagering. • August 4 from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.- First Annual Mother Goose Olympics (rain date August 7) Families are invited to participate in Northland Library's First Annual Mother Goose Olympics! Families can drop in anytime between 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on August 4. Preschoolers can run, jump and have fun doing noncompetitive activities based on their favorite nursery rhymes. Children can run from station to station reading rhymes, completing the activity and collecting stickers for their game board. No registration is required. • August 6-11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.-third-fifth grade -Lego bracelet Participants will be making a fashionable Lego bracelet. Pre-registration in person at the children’s desk is required and participants should be members of the Summer Reading Club. $2 materials fee. • August 8- 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.- For everyone! Hot Dog Day 50¢ hot dogs, face painting, crafts, treats, raffles and more! • August 7- 1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.- The Science Center will be here! "Growing and Shrinking" Club Science program- kindergarten-second grades Take home your own "Grow Beast" and watch it grow over time to 5 times its size in water. Make a necklace from plastic and watch it shrink to 1/4 its size using heat. For children in kindergarten - second grades who are able to attend independently. Must pre-register in person at the chikdren’s deskand MUST be signed up for Summer Reading Club. This program is brought to you by the Northland Public Library Foundation.

"Chemical Creations" Discovery Day- third grade & up - Investigate different kinds of slime through experimentation. Up to 30 children/session. Must pre-register in person at the children’s desk and MUST be signed up for Summer Reading Club. This program is brought to you by the Northland Public Library Foundation. • August 16 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.- all ages - Stuffed Animal Sleepover Stuffed Animals just wanna have fun. Bring your favorite stuffed animal to Northland for crafts and hi-jinx at the Stuffed Animal Sleepover. We will make a craft for our stuffies and have a story or two. Then say goodbye to your friend so they can have their very own sleepover at the library. Your friend can be picked up any time Monday, August 18. They may even have a little souvenir for you to enjoy at home. Registration for our five participating municipalities begins July 26. Open registration begins August 9.
