We’re lucky that we have The Olympics and Paralympics to carry us through – especially as we have such a fantastic group of athletes from Leeds to cheer for. We talk to some of our medal hopefuls, a number of whom are already world champions in their fields. It’s unfortunate that many local events have had to be postponed or cancelled because of the weather, but people are battling on regardless. The North York Moors National Park is celebrating its 60th anniversary with a variety of events, including a dance performance in a giant bubble. They may need to supply bubbles for the audience too!

The fourth annual Burley-in-Wharfedale Summer Festival will run from Saturday 18th – Saturday 25th August. With 70 events during the week, the Festival boasts something for everybody. Activities include walks, arts activities, dance workshops, sports, games, music, plus special festival events in the village pubs and clubs. The popular Climbing Wall returns, as does the Classic Vehicles Show on Sunday 19th, which attracted over 200 vehicles last year. There will also be a Farmers’ and Craft Market, Silsden and Lofthouse Brass Bands, children’s activities, an art show, teas in the park, and a Healthy Living event, to be opened by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Dale Smith.
New events this year include a Scarecrow Trail for local businesses and residents and a Dog Show, with a wide variety of classes and awards. The Beer and Cider Festival, run by Burley Social Club, will be on Saturday 25th August. Burley Theatre Group has organised a ‘Murder Mystery’ evening with a three course meal. Plus there’s the regular Festival Ceilidh. The Festival concludes with its traditional opera evening, once again featuring Sarah Estill (Opera North), Angela Fuller (Royal Opera House and D’Oyly Carte), and Paul Gibson (Opera North). LEEDS MENCAP CALLS FOR NEW VOLUNTEERS Leeds Mencap is looking for volunteers to help support the 250 families with learning disabilities that it supports every week. The charity provides services for people of all ages and relies on voluntary support to deliver many of them, working in youth clubs, social groups, parent support projects, residential care and much more.

Bus Services When I was chairman of Metro, I started the process towards Quality Bus Contracts. During consultation, over 90% of respondents supported this and last month Metro colleagues unanimously voted to start the process. This means that, whilst buses will continue to be run by private operators, they will do so to criteria specified by Metro. This includes fares, frequencies and routes, as well as integrated ticketing, similar to London’s Oyster Cards. I have also had meetings with Metro to bring a Real Time display to Otley Bus Station. Three options have been drawn up, so hopefully we will have one soon. Otley bus station is very busy and can be confusing at times. Real time displays will let passengers know which stand to wait at and the expected time of arrival of their bus. Pedestrian Crossing Provision I have also called for a review of pedestrian crossings in Otley. Since becoming councillor in 2004, I have, along with my colleagues Cllr Campbell and Cllr Kirkland, managed to secure new crossings on Westgate (one near Westgate School, the other near Waitrose), Gay Lane and Farnley Lane (at Prince Henry’s). I am pushing for crossings on Burras Lane and Newall Carr Road too. MICE Awards Councillors are given a small amount of money each year (MICE) to help local community organisations. Recently we have been able to help Otley Carnival, Grove Hill Bowling Club, Otley Cycle Races and The Broadwalk Residents Association. In addition, we have awarded wellbeing grants to Wharfemeadows Park for weekend litter picking during the summer; Otley Town Football Club, to help refurbish their facilities; and CASAC for burglary reduction initiatives. NORA’S WINS ILKLEY CARNIVAL SHOP WINDOW THE COMPETITION ARTHINGTON
STATION ACTION GROUP
I am hoping to get this group up and running. I feel someone has to speak up for all the people from around the area who would like to be able to catch a train from Arthington Station. From my own research I know it would not only be used by people from Pool, but also Otley, Bramhope, Arthington and Harewood. To date only Pool residents have been consulted on the issue. I would like to know what other people in and around the Wharfe Valley area think about this idea. The Arthington Station Action Group (ASAG) will give those people a voice.
The competition, which challenged store owners to dress their windows in the carnival’s ‘Summer of Celebration’ theme, drew a fantastic response and Nora’s was chosen by the carnival committee for the ‘most imaginative and resourceful’ window display. “I was absolutely delighted to win”, said Victoria Newhouse, who established the business with her mum, Fiona, “not only because the PR prize is incredibly valuable to a business like mine, but also to be recognised for our support of the carnival. I’m hoping the PR campaign will help to raise awareness of why we’re unique, bring more people to discover the shop, and boost orders on our website.” 10 August 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk

Our part of the Wharfe Valley is crying out for a better alternative to the car so let’s see what some like-minded people can do about it. We need to keep the momentum going. If I am unable to obtain enough support, it is likely the station simply will not happen. I am actively involved with the Harrogate Line Rail User Group, which is very experienced when it comes to getting their views across where the traveling public is concerned. In my time as a Councillor I have met many people from businesses, business groups, Parish and Town Councils from around the area, who have supported my efforts. I hope to continue working with these supporters. A new station at Arthington could bring massive benefits to our area. For the new group to be successful it will need public support. Women’s Boxing finally an Olympic Sport

For boxer Nicola Adams from Burmantofts it is a truly momentous opportunity as she will be one of the first women to box at the Olympic Games. Women’s boxing first appeared in the Olympic Games as a demonstration sport in 1904 but was banned in most countries for most of the 20th century. The ban was lifted in the UK in 1996. The first European Cup for Women was held in 1999 and the first World Championship in 2001 in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Since then the sport’s popularity has soared. But It was not until 2009 that it was finally announced that it would be included in the 2012 Olympics.

“When I heard Women’s Boxing was in the 2012 Olympics I was overwhelmed”, said Nicola. “I always wanted to be part of the Olympics. It is so exciting and such an amazing feeling.” Nicola started boxing when she was 12 and had her first bout at 13! One of her problems was finding other girls to fight. At 17 her talent was recognised and she was asked if she would be interested in taking part in national championships – she hasn’t looked back.
Fighting as a flyweight, she has been amazingly successful in the last couple of years and has a definite chance of a medal in London. “Normally I’m boxing abroad. What makes this even better is that my family and friends will have the opportunity to see me box here at home.”

And what does the future hold? Whatever she does it will always involve boxing. “I cannot imagine not boxing – I just love it with a passion.”
UK cyclists set to take medals
Britain has been doing fantastically well in cycling for some time. Now Lizzie Armitstead from Otley is joining the Olympic team. It seems just the other day that she was spotted by a cycling scout when she was at Prince Henry’s Grammar School. Shortly afterwards North Leeds Life featured a little piece about her search for sponsors to help her progress in her sport – well here she is! cyclist and a favourite for Women’s Road Race at London 2012 “I am delighted to have been officially selected for the Olympics for the women’s road race team” Lizzie told us. “I was really hoping for selection with the results I’ve been producing this year but I was surprised by my reaction after I was told – it felt like a huge weight had been lifted off my shoulders and all the hard work had been worth it. I’m so excited and proud to be pulling on the Team GB jersey and can’t wait until 29th July!” Cyclist David Stone is almost a veteran – this will be his third Paralympics! David, who suffers from cerebral palsy, describes cycling as a source of freedom and enjoyment. He has raced all over the world and has already won Gold at Paralympic and World Championship level, taking Gold in both Road Race and Time Trials in Beijing. After the Sydney Games in 2000, he took a few years out and went travelling, coming back to the sport with renewed focus and determination. “When it comes down to it this is just another race that I’m going out there to win”, he said. “Recently, I went to Brands Hatch to look at the course for London. I had seen it before but not ridden around it. I was surprised at how rolling and technical it was. This type of course is suited to my riding style and I hope it will be an amazing event.” northleedslife.co.uk | August 2012 13
Leeds Swimmers will make a splash!
Leeds will have five divers at the Games - these are City of Leeds stars Rebecca Gallantree, Sarah Barrow, Jack Laugher, Hannah Starling and Alicia Blagg. Such is the success of the City of Leeds squad, based at the John Charles Centre, that the club accounts for five of the 12-strong Team GB Olympic squad. Harrogate’s Jack Laugher (17) broke his own British record on the way to winning the men’s 3m individual event to seal his place in London.

Hannah and Alicia are the first homegrown Leeds divers ever to compete at an Olympic Games and, together with Jack, are youngest members of the squad. Like David Stone, swimmer Claire Cashmore will also be taking part in her third Paralympics. Claire, who has just graduated from Leeds University with a degree in Linguistics and Phonetics, has been swimming competitively for 11 years. She won Bronze in 2008. “This will be so very different to Beijing”, she told us. “It will be a home crowd cheering for us and that support means so much.” Claire trains mainly at the John Charles Centre, which she describes as ‘a great facility’. In the run up to the Games she has had the opportunity to meet members of both the Dutch and Chinese teams, who have also been training there. She was keen to thank the City of Leeds Swimming Club, and everyone around Yorkshire for their support – including The Queen’s Hotel who were quick to step in and offer her accommodation when she had to leave her student house. “Anyone thinking of aiming for the Olympics should go for it and just keep working hard”, she said. “It’s never easy. Of course, we’ve been watching Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee eating up triathlon titles for some time now. Just recently Alistair returned to competition at Kitzbuhel, having been out of commission for months with an Achilles injury. The brothers attacked the course with Alistair

coming in first with a time of 1:50:13 and Jonathan only 45 seconds behind him. Maybe they could try and cross the finish line together in London! Seeing the two of them race is tremendously exciting. They have plenty of competition from around the world, but at the moment the UK is leading the world in the sport of triathlon with Alistair and Jonny for the men and Helen Jenkins for the women.
Suddenly The Olympics and Paralympics are much more real. The journey of the Olympic Torch almost whipped people into a frenzy! It was fantastic to be able to recognise the contributions and achievements of so many people as they carried the torch around the country. Now it’s over to our athletes and WOW! We have some great local athletes to support, don’t we?
Breaking records even before the Games!
There’s nothing like breaking records even before the Olympics begin – and Wheelchair Racer Hannah Cockroft did just that in June! Competing in the brand new stadium, and having missed her call and warm up due to an accident with the bus that was meant to get her there, Hannah went straight onto the course and broke a world record! She tried swimming, discus and wheelchair basketball before discovered wheelchair racing just four years ago (she’s 19 now) and she loves it. She seems to be bubbling over with equal measures of excitement.and terror! “The stadium was empty when I broke that record. It’s going to be so different when it’s full of people”, she told us. “The biggest crowd I’ve ever raced in front of before was 5,000 – this will be 80,000! These games are going to be massive. There’s lots of pressure but also loads of support.” Hannah is a currently a Double World Champion. She recently returned from competing in Indianapolis where she won both her races. After the games she may finally get the time to take up her place on the Sports Development Course at Leeds Met.
Rowing to victory!
The GB Rowing Teams are also strong contenders, with a number of rowers from Yorkshire. Debbie Flood, from Guiseley, will be rowing in the Women’s Quadruple Skulls. Having worked her way back from injury she joins her 2004 and 2008 crew-mate Frances Houghton in the equivalent women’s boat in which she won Olympic silver in 2004 and 2008.

(Colonel) John Thomas North (1842-1896) Millionaire Adventurer – Donor of Kirkstall Abbey
Ruthless opportunist, lovable rogue, heartless swindler, generous benefactor – just some of the views of John Thomas North, who made his fortune thousands of miles away in Chile, but never forgot his home town of Leeds. North was born on 30 January 1842 at 7 Bywater Street, Hunslet, a narrow street of back-to-backs in an area of railway sidings, coal staithes, and huge foundries belching out smoke. His father, a coal dealer, died when he was 14 and his widowed mother took over a pub in Grape Street, where the family lived, among huddled terraces overshadowed by the vast Airedale Foundry (all swept away since in slum clearance). Nearby in Hunslet Road was John Fowler’s Steam Plough Works, where, after an apprenticeship, North found a job as a millwright, a machine engineer. He married in 1866 and began a family. Then, around 1869, Fowlers offered him the chance to go to Chile, an important export market for their booming business. He seized the opportunity for a new life. He stayed there thirteen years, soon leaving Fowlers and working for himself. He finished up a millionaire, mainly from the processing of nitrates which were then in increasing demand as a fertilizer. His multiple schemes included supplying fresh water for the arid desert area of the nitrate fields, building railways for transport, and setting up a bank to provide financial backing. A bold opportunist and gambler, he profited from the war between Peru and Chile over possession of the nitrate region by buying up concessions at a knockdown price which subsequently made him a fortune. North returned to Britain in 1882 to promote his business interests and with his brash persona, lavish 16 August 2012 | northleedslife.co.uk
spending and gift for publicity set off a nitrate boom. People queued up to invest in the numerous companies he launched, following the dream of a quick profit. He was set on making his mark in high society, hobnobbing with royalty and the rich and famous. Known everywhere as ‘The Nitrate King’, he added ‘Colonel’ to his title by joining the local Volunteers. He bought a mansion at Avery Hill near London and spent huge sums extending and refurbishing it in spectacular style – his opulent lifestyle, fabulous parties and expensive sporting interests made him the media celebrity of his day. But he never forgot his Leeds roots and family and was always ready to back worthy causes, making substantial donations to the Infirmary and the Yorkshire College. His most spectacular gift came about in 1889, when he heard by chance that Kirkstall
Abbey and its grounds were up for auction and were at risk of being bought by a group of Manchester businessmen as an amusement park. He promptly promised to buy the Abbey himself, with extra land, and hand it all over to the citizens of Leeds. The purchase cost him £10,000. In return he was honoured as the first Freeman of the city. When he arrived in Leeds for the ceremony he was mobbed and cheered. His huge popularity led him to stand as Tory candidate for West Leeds in 1895, a campaign he fought with supreme showmanship but not the slightest concern for political issues. He lost by only a few votes. Colonel North returned to Chile in 1889, when British nitrate concessions were under threat from the nationalist president of the time. How far he was involved in exploiting the political tensions in Chile remains an open question. In any case he saw that the future for nitrates, particularly with the development of artificial fertilizers, was looking bleak. He quietly got rid of most of his nitrate interests and diversified his investments into a wide range of businesses at home and abroad. Suspicions and accusations of financial misconduct were beginning to beset him when in 1896 he suddenly died of a heart attack at a business meeting in London, after a lunch of oysters and porter. His death made headlines across the world. Ilkley Brewery was recently announced as the winner of the Local Business Accelerators (LBA) scheme at a ceremony in London. Organised by the Newspaper Society (NS), the initiative is fronted by national ambassador and Dragons’ Den star, Deborah Meaden, and backed by Prime Minister David Cameron, Business Secretary Vince Cable, and CBI Director General John Cridland. “This excellent initiative shows how local papers can support and energise some of the brilliant new British businesses in their area and really help them flourish”, said David Cameron. “By fostering entrepreneurship and innovation, these papers are not only nurturing local talent, but also playing a key part in encouraging economic growth from a local level upwards”. It tells the story of a doomed romance between a beautiful mermaid and handsome nobleman, Brand. Despite being raised by humans, Ondine retains the mysticism of her kind. In time Brand grows fearful of the otherworldly creature he has married and finds himself drawn to a previous love, but he knows that should he break their bond a watery grave will seek him out. The production features the original music of Hans Werner Henze. The stunning sets and costumes are created by Jérôme Kaplan.

MAJOR NEW PRIZE ADDED TO LEEDS INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION
A major new prize – The Terence JuddHallé Award – has been added to the Leeds International Piano Competition 2012, which runs from 29th August – 16th September.

The prize is in memory of a brilliant young pianist and past pupil of Dame Fanny Waterman who was 3rd prizewinner in the Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in 1978 and who died tragically young, on the verge of a brilliant musical career. Members of the Hallé and their music director, Sir Mark Elder, will choose one of the six Leeds finalists to receive the award, which will consist of a cash prize of £5,000, at least three paid engagements, and the possibility of a recording on the Hallé label. More than 270 entries were submitted for the 2012 Competition, from which 80 pianists from over 20 countries have been selected to compete in front of an international jury.

“The applications this year have been outstanding, some of the finest talent the Audition Panel has ever seen and heard”, said Dame Fanny Waterman, who, together with Marion Thorpe, founded the Competition in 1961. “This will be a remarkable year as we will celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee, the Olympic Games and the 50th anniversary of the world’s greatest International Piano Competition. We hope to continue to help aspiring young pianists at the start of their careers and the prize winners will be offered a number of prestigious national and international engagements.” The Competition is held every three years and the two finals in Leeds Town Hall are televised by BBC 4 and broadcast by BBC Radio 3. Six finalists will perform with the Hallé, conducted by Sir Mark Elder, at Leeds Town Hall on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th September. Dame Janet Baker, the Competition’s Patron, will present the prizes. The winner will also receive an £18,000 cash prize donated by the Liz and Terry Bramall Charitable Trust and a range of prestigious engagements with leading UK and international orchestras.

CHARLIE SIEM APPOINTED VISITING PROFESSOR AT LCM Leeds College of Music recently announced the appointment of Charlie Siem as a Visiting Professor. Charlie is one of the UK’s brightest new classical music stars. The multi-talented, versatile performer has appeared with orchestras around the world including the Royal Philharmonic, London Mozart Players, Israel Camerata and the Bergen Philharmonic.
“I was thrilled to be approached by Leeds College of Music and eagerly await my visits to such a forward thinking institution”, said Charlie. “I look forward to being able to contribute and to share with its students my advice and experiences, challenging them to not only improve their playing but also to help them understand and deal with the immense pressure of performing.”
His versatility was further demonstrated by a unique collaboration with the Royal Ballet whose dancers he accompanied on a tour to Cuba. MOVING TO THE RHYTHM OF THE MOORS
This summer something quite breathtaking will be popping up in stunning locations across the North York Moors National Park including Rievaulx Terrace, Wykeham Abbey and The Moors National Park Centre, Danby. Terrarium is a new dance performance created by Leeds-based choreographer Simon Birch and is one of the highlights of the National Park’s 60th anniversary celebrations. It runs from 1st – 12th August with a mix of afternoon and evening performances. The performance takes place in a giant bubble, four and a half metres in diameter, enabling the audience to view the dance in relation to the surrounding landscape. Performed by two dancers, Terrarium is inspired by the beauty and wildness of the moors and coast and
the changes that take place with the passing of time and seasons. Composer Jon Hughes has created an extraordinary musical soundtrack, played through an ambi-sonic surround-sound system designed to give the listener an almost 3D sound experience. The music is based on a series of recordings made in locations around the National Park. “Our aim is to capture the audiences imagination by placing high quality live dance performance in unusual and inspiring rural location”, said Simon Birch. “We are grateful to the North York Moors National Park for providing us with this amazing opportunity to perform in the stunning locations and to be part of their 60th anniversary celebrations.”

WASHBURN HERITAGE CENTRE COMES INTO ITS OWN
The Washburn Heritage Centre, a new extension to the 17th Century Fewston Church, just seven miles north of Otley, opened its doors in February 2011 and in its first year it has become a firmly established local attraction. Over 10,000 visitors have already enjoyed what it has to offer. Highlights of the last year included a Bronze Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects in the RIBA Northern Network Awards 2011. This year has seen the further development of imaginative and exciting events and exhibitions, which have galvanised much local research and participation. The launch of the Washburn Society, now with a membership base of over 230, has strengthened the engagement of many local residents and visitors, who are helping carry things forward. HERITAGE OPEN DAY AT OTLEY COURTHOUSE
Otley Courthouse welcomes visitors on Heritage Open Day, Saturday 8th September, 10am – 4pm. There will be guided tours of the former Victorian police station, cells and magistrates’ courts throughout the day. The building dates from the mid 1850s and fascinating details about life at the police station and cases from the Petty Sessions are revealed! Round and About is an exhibition of paintings and prints by Jackie Waring at Otley Courthouse from Saturday 30th July – 25th August.
Jackie had always been fascinated with garden wildlife and, when a friend discovered an abandoned bird’s nest complete with speckled eggs in the
woodshed, she was spurred into action. After many years as an art teacher, it was time to do it herself. She took the nest home and made a detailed drawing of the intricate textures and form, thinking of its small builder going round and round to construct this home. She entered a new phase of painting, drawing and printmaking - primarily to learn how to do it better. Looking at paintings, photos and design by people like Winifred Nicholson, Georgia O’Keefe, Matisse and CartierBresson, she experimented with colour, composition, pattern and contrasts. Ideas were buzzing around in her head, everywhere she looked she saw possibilities for pictures. And, slowly she put together this collection of work called Round and About.

As this is traditionally the holiday month, the garden needs tending to so that you will not have too much hard work when you return! Providing there is no rain, cut and edge lawns a couple of days before going away and enlist a friend or neighbour to come in and water baskets, pots etc. Most plants will have set seed and now is the time to collect them and store them in paper bags or envelopes. Some plants need to have their seeds sown at the time of ripening to do well, hellebores are one of these. Fortunately there will be less weeding to be done as germination slows down. Give hedges a final cut no later than September. Prune rambling roses, give lavender a trim after collecting the flowers for drying, but make sure you don’t cut into hard wood. Layer rhododendrons, pinks and clematis to provide new plants for next year, and take soft wood cuttings from pelargonium and fuchsias. Sort and divide perennials towards the end of the month, taking out any dead, old sections, and re-planting the newer pieces, maybe placing some in bare patches. Lift and dry onions, cut and dry herbs for the winter, water and feed tomatoes regularly removing yellowed leaves. This is also the last chance to plant colanchiums for autumn flowering. The planting of spring bulbs, especially daffodils, crocus, tulips etc. is best left until November.
The Burley Gardeners’ Association’s Annual Flower and Produce Show will be held on Sunday 26th August at the Queen’s Hall, Main Street, Burley in Wharfedale. Residents of Burley in Wharfedale and Burley Woodhead may enter the Flower, Produce, Wine, Handicraft, Fruit and Vegetable Classes and anyone can enter the Open and Junior Classes. Entries should be brought to the Queen’s Hall between 10am and 12 noon on the day. The Show is open to the general public from 2.15 – 4.15pm. Entry is 50p for adults, 10p for under-16s, and free for members of the association. As well as the exhibits, visitors can enjoy a variety of displays, including an art exhibition by Burley Art Group; a floral art demonstration by Sheila Quin of The Yorkshire Flower Club; a photographic exhibition by Ian Lamond Photography and Helen Taylor Garden Design; plants and planters by Courtyard Planters of Otley; and a Burley Bridge Association presentation. Sheila Quin will present the trophies and prizes at 4pm. In addition, the shop, small business or pub chosen as the winner of this year’s Burley in Bloom competition will be presented with the Dick Hargrave Shield. Homemade afternoon teas will be served throughout the Show and it will conclude at 4.30pm with an auction of exhibits. Wet summer slug damage has to be controlled by either beer traps or pellets, some may be lucky to have frogs, toads or hedgehogs around, which do their bit to keep them down plus provide a tasty meal! Hostas in particular attract slugs. I have found that watering them with Provado tends to deter them. Cut back perennials that have collapsed or spread over other plants – this encourages new growth and possibly more flowers. Keep ponds topped up with water and remove any fading flowers and leaves from surrounding plants. Thin out oxygenating weeds and remove all blanket weed. Carry on harvesting crops whilst they are still young. Vegetables in particular have a better flavour picked young. If you have a glut of vegetables, prepare and freeze them for winter use. A gardener’s work is never done!

Invisible by day through its superb camouflage, it is most often seen in flight at dusk, when it hawks for flying insects in buoyant and agile manoeuvres. Nightjars are scarce summer visitors from Africa, south of the Sahara, from May to September. They prefer forest glades and clearings and lowland heathlands. In Yorkshire they are most numerous in forests such as Langdale in the North York Moors and at Hatfield and Thorne Moors, lowland heaths near Doncaster. Preferring low undergrowth, nightjars desert forest clearings as vegetation grows over a few years and shift elsewhere to freshly cleared woodland. As a result, populations are difficult to assess but numbers are holding up well in northeast Yorkshire.

MARIE CURIE 10K AT BOLTON ABBEY
Marie Curie Cancer Care has once again organised its series of Walk Ten events at beautiful locations around the country this summer. The 10k walk and celebration at Bolton Abbey is on Saturday 18th August and will help to raise much needed funds to provide more free nursing care for people with terminal illnesses. Bolton Abbey is beautiful at any time of year, but particularly when the sun is setting on a summer’s evening. With exclusive after hours access, the walk will take you along the River Wharfe, through woodland and gorges, over scenic moorland paths and past the ruins of the old Priory. The walk starts at 6pm and afterwards there will be live music, picnics and fireworks to celebrate the work of Marie Curie Nurses. Registration is just £10 per person (children free) and you are encouraged to raise as much as possible to support the charity.

OTLEY’S FIRST CYCLING FESTIVAL A GREAT SUCCESS! Over 100 cyclists gathered at Otley Cycle Club’s first ever Cycling Festival (8th July) to tackle a variety of routes
ranging from four to 80 miles. It was also a superb social event, including displays at Otley Museum, a show of Town Mayor Mary Vickers and Greg Mulholland with young cyclists
cycling art by The Courthouse and a barbeque. “It was a pleasure to see so many people of all ages out on their bikes”, said Mary Vickers, Otley Town Mayor. “They catered for everyone with their impressive range of rides. There were even opportunities for families to cycle safely together.” Greg Mulholland MP also took part and commented: “I was delighted to attend Otley Cycling Festival, the turnout was fantastic and even the rain held off! DRAGONS RUNNERS ‘BOWLED OVER’ WITH NEW MOVE! Dragons Running Club has moved to a new home at Yeadon Cricket Club. The move comes after a 10 year link to a local gym. “Our club was created by gym members who shared an interest in running outdoors and has grown to a membership in excess of 90”, said Joanne Wood, Chair of Dragons RC. “Our ties with the gym had become prohibitive, so it was time to become independent, enabling us to offer membership without the obligation to pay expensive gym fees as well. The Cricket Club was keen to accommodate us and we were delighted to join them.” Yeadon Cricket Club, located behind the Swan Pub on Yeadon High Street, is ideally based to offer members a variety of runs, such as a leisurely jog around the Tarn, road running through Horsforth and Guiseley or challenging off-road runs over The Billings and The Chevin. There is also ample parking on site, and members also
benefit from a 10% discount at the bar, with the option to sit outside on long summer evenings watching cricket to help aid recovery! Dragons Running Club prides itself on being relaxed, friendly and sociable. ANOTHER GREAT OTLEY WALKING FESTIVAL! Otley Walking Festival 2012 was a huge success and the biggest since it first started as a one-off Millennium event. With 51 walks and events over the nine days there really was something for everyone. New this year were some town-based evening events – Walking in Man-made Land, The Deighton Family, The After-Work Stress Buster, Otley in Bloom, Walking into the
Sunset, plus the return of the popular Despicable Liars Evening Meander, Saunter with the Strolling Minstrel, and the Wayzgoose Weave. Along with favourites like The Red Kite Walk, In the Footsteps of Timble Man, and Almscliffe Crag Circular, there were opportunities to try new themed walks - the Chevin Forest Rocks, Fossils and Landscapes Trail, Cakes
and Ale, the Lost Hamlets of Baildon Moor, Limestone and Lead Mines, the Coxwold Jaunt, Saltaire Circular. The new 38 mile Six Dales Trail from Otley to Middleham was completed in three stages and included ceremonies to unveil the plaques that mark the start and end of the Trail. There were walks for all ages and abilities - short town-based walks, waterside walks, and strenuous moorland hikes. Whilst all had interesting features, the most unusual must surely have been the one where a tree was purchased and carried the whole seven miles back to Otley! Thanks go to the great team of walk leaders who gave their time and expertise voluntarily. REVIEW: ENCORE!! AT HEART, HEADINGLEY, 28TH JUNE.
To call yourselves Encore! could be a hostage to fortune, but not when the duo in question are Maggi Stratford and Daniel Bowater. The evening’s performance concluded to rapturous applause and the encore given was Piaf’s ‘Non, je ne regrette rien’. And indeed, the only regret I felt was that I had not caught an Encore! performance earlier. Brel and Piaf were the mainstays of the programme, which also

included songs by Georges Moustaki, Léo Ferré and Charles Trenet, as well as the lovely ‘Au temp des cerises’. Maggi’s voice effortlessly conveyed the passion, intensity and integrity of the material. Her voice is warm, beautifully pitched and full of verve when needed, as it was in Brel’s ‘Amsterdam’. She was equally affecting in the quieter songs such as Brel’s ‘Les Vieux’, a meditation on old age. Maggi was accompanied by the exceptional Daniel Bowater, who played keyboard, accordion and guitar, reacting with great sensitivity to every nuance of the performance. Sung in French, the songs were put in their historical and biographical contexts by Maggi, who gave a short, informative and chatty introduction to each one. Bringing to mind the small town set modern noir-ish crime thrillers of John Dahl such as Red Rock West and The Last Seduction, Killer Joe is replete with all the twisting betrayals, backstabbing and questionable morality of the genre and is shot through with pitch black humour. It is dark stuff indeed. While never seeming too stagey, the film’s theatre origins are evidenced in good use of a strong ensemble cast. Relative newcomer Juno Temple has fun with the archetypal southern belle temptress role and Thomas Haden Church once again makes a convincing halfwit. Emile Hirsch’s Chris could almost elicit a little sympathy were it not for the trifling matter of pimping out his own sister and the ever-watchable Gina Gershon plays Sharla as a white trash harridan straight from the set of The Jerry Springer Show.

ST. MARY’S STUDENTS LEARN TO MANAGE JUNIOR FOOTBALL PLAYERS A group of St. Mary’s High School students from Years 9, 10 and 12 attended a two day Football Leadership
Training Course, run by West Riding County Football Association (WRCFA) recently.
They all passed the Junior Football Leaders, Football Handling and Movement Skills, and Refereeing courses, learning a range of skills to plan, lead and manage junior Football players. They will all be encouraged to become members of the FA’s ‘Football Futures’ scheme – a leadership and coaching programme that supports and develops young Football Leaders and coaches. Each of the students will use their new skills to support junior football at St.Mary’s or in their local community. This was the first course to combine three coaching elements in one and has been praised by the WRCFA as a model of good practice. St.Mary’s will extend this course to additional pupils and introduce a range of introductory and more advanced coaching qualifications over the next twelve months.

So, on a very cold, wet and windy Saturday morning, they held a homemade cake stall in the market square and managed to raise the balance. The Cubs would like to thank everyone who supported them in their fundraising. They were very proud to present their cheque to David Henderson who came to the Scout Hut to receive it on behalf of ShelterBox. ShelterBox is an international disaster relief charity that delivers emergency shelter, warmth and dignity to people made homeless. Honorary Scout, Greg Mulholland MP, recently welcomed Tace Morgan, Young Leader with the 2nd Otley Beaver Colony, to Parliament, as they joined Scout troops from across the country for the annual Scout Association parliamentary reception. The event, co-hosted by Commons Speaker John Bercow MP and the AllParty Group on Scouting, provided an opportunity for MPs to meet scouts from their constituency and to hear about the activity of Scout troops in their area. Greg chatted with Tace Morgan, and Scout leader Mark Pullen, a member of Wharfedale Explorers. Tace hopes to complete the Queen’s Scout Award (the top award in Scouting) soon and will join 18-25 year old Scouts from all over the world at the 14th World Scout Moot in Canada next year. Greg, who was made an Honorary Scout by the Otley Parish Scouts in 2010, has long supported the Scout Association nationally and scouting in the constituency, including getting Parliamentary support behind an expedition to the Himalayas when West Yorkshire Scouts took part in
Project Nepal in 2010. MPs heard more about current efforts to recruit more adults to the movement, to enable the 35,000 young people currently on waiting lists to join the half million young people already benefiting from the opportunities the movement provides. “As an Honorary Scout, I would like to add my voice to the call for more adult leaders and volunteers to come forward”, said Greg. “The Scouts are a fantastic organisation, preparing young people to serve their communities while offering the chance to participate in extraordinary projects and expeditions - forming the leaders of tomorrow.”

Cliffe House Day Nursery based in Burley in Wharfedale, celebrated their tenth anniversary recently and organised a special Summer Fair. Sean the lamb from Lineham Farm visited the fair with one of the farm’s animal wardens – he was a great hit with all the children. Cliffe House regularly supports Lineham Farm Children’s Centre and has already donated over £600 towards a potato project. Nearly £495 was raised at the 10th year celebrations and a cheque was presented to Clare Beard, Event Co-ordinator at Lineham Farm. Lineham Farm provides a week long active residential for children aged eight to eleven. The stay includes a varied programme of activities, which include animal care, environmental studies, mountain biking, climbing and art. Each year they need to raise funds to cover all the running costs of the farm. This year’s target is to raise £160,000 through donations
