0113 293 4304 BBC Look North Presenters are set to embark on The Big Summit Sofa Challenge, their toughest Sofa Challenge, to raise money for Sport Relief 2020. Harry Gration, Amy Garcia, and Paul Hudson will set off from Scholes on Friday 6th March, pulling and pushing their red sofa 100 miles, incorporating some of Yorkshireâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s biggest climbs, and meeting people who are involved with Sport Relief projects along the route. The Challenge will take them through some of the most gruelling on and off-road climbs, finishing on Sport Relief Day, 13th March. Keeley Donovan, who is expecting her first baby on 28th June, will lead the support team. The team has undertaken three epic challenges in aid of Sport Relief, raising almost three quarters of a million pounds, watched by crowds of thousands en route.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s challenge takes the team through the Dales - including climbing to the top of Fleet Moss. They'll visit Hawes, Kettlewell and Grassington in North Yorkshire. Then head West - visiting Silsden, Keighley, Oxenhope, Sowerby Bridge, Halifax and Meltham, before the big climb up to Holme Moss near Holmfirth. The final two days will see the team travel through South Yorkshire, visiting Conisbrough, Mexbrough and Sprotbrough. Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford

WILL (WILLIAM MATTHEW) SCOTT (1893 – 1964) Caricaturist, author and playwright In the plush red stalls of the famous City Varieties you will find a seat with a plaque to William Matthew Scott, ‘caricaturist and author’. Who was he? Not many Leeds people will be able to tell you. He was born and bred here but he made his name ‘down south’ with his graphic art and his prolific writing, and the town he left behind has mostly forgotten him. Yet in his day thousands of people enjoyed his dry wit and sharp observation.

The first 20 years of his life were spent in Leeds, the seedbed for his fascination with music hall and theatre and his skills in caricature and storytelling. His first home in 1893 was in Camp Road, Little London, and then in nearby Woodhouse. The grim narrow streets and terraces where he lived are all gone now. His father was a joiner, his mother had been a dressmaker, both from working class backgrounds. In Will’s early childhood they ran a corner tobacconist’s shop to make ends meet. Money was tight but Will remembered the fun and jollity of the times. He was a delicate child, often absent from school but free to roam and explore. By the age of ten he was finding his way (if he could scrape a sixpence) into the theatres and music halls – the City Varieties, the Tivoli, the Empire – drawn by the music, the camaraderie, the humorous defiance of life’s many hardships. This experience was to colour his life and work. He discovered a talent for drawing, influenced by the vivid graphic art of the theatrical posters and handbills pasted up everywhere, and of favourite comics like ‘Comic Cuts’. His first drawing was published when he was only 14, and with his parents’ backing he started training as a lithographic artist, probably in John Waddington’s theatrical printers. He had ambitions to be a ‘serious’ artist but found his strengths lay in cartoon

and caricature. He developed his own bold, distinctive style, his work often featured in the local press. He was 21 when war broke out but was rejected as unfit (C3) for service. In 1915 he married a local girl, Lily Edmundson, and around the same time was encouraged to look for better prospects in London, launching himself there as a caricaturist. His increasingly modernist drawings of characters like George Robey featured in theatrical journals, particularly ‘The Performer,’ and in art and design magazines. He put forward his challenging views on art, arguing for it to be more accessible, not shut up in galleries but out in everyday life. He defended comic art and the new cubist and futurist movements he admired, but began to feel he was losing the battle. Life was hard, money short, and his health poor – when C3 men were called up in 1918 he was rejected again, with suspected TB.

Then a turning point. In 1919 he wrote and directed a silent comedy film, and in 1920 had his first short story published. At the same time, he and Lily, with their first daughter, moved from London to Herne Bay in Kent: sea air and a fresh start. He turned from art to writing, particularly short stories – a record 3,000 in all, contributing regularly to magazines like ‘Pan’, ‘The Passing Show’, ‘John Bull’, ‘Strand Magazine’. In 1925 he published a full-length novel ‘Disher - Detective’, witty, original, ‘a little masterpiece of ingenuity’, and two sequels, which he turned into a successful play, a comedy thriller called ‘The Limping Man’. It was staged twice in London’s West End and later filmed. This led to further film scripts and plays, including for the local theatre he helped to run. He wrote for the newspapers too. In the late 1930s, the tense period before WW2, he had a regular column in the left-wing Daily Herald, then Britain’s biggest selling newspaper. His articles, quirky, thoughtful, spiced with the humour of everyday life, reached a huge readership and perhaps raised a smile in those dark times.

Post-war, prompted by having grandchildren to entertain, he enjoyed another kind of literary success with a series of children’s books which took off in popularity in the 1950s and 60s, based on the adventures of the Cherry family of four children, their parents and friends. Writing them, he said, was ‘the greatest fun in the world!’ These books, with their colourful covers and maps, are collectors’ items now. A shy, quiet man, idiosyncratic and witty, Will Scott died in 1964. His only memorial is his work, which still occasionally surfaces in collections, an affectionate biography by his granddaughter, and that plush seat in the music hall setting that first enthralled him.

Northern Ballet Kicks Oﬀ 50th Anniversary Season with Haunting Tale of Sisterhood Northern Ballet premières the first new production of its fiftieth anniversary year at Leeds Grand Theatre from 14th – 21st March. ‘Geisha’ is an evocative, original ballet by choreographer Kenneth Tindall, Northern Ballet’s Choreographer in Residence, who brought us the highly acclaimed ‘Casanova’ in 2017. In ‘Geisha’, the lives of two young women, Aiko and Okichi, are torn apart when a collision between East and West changes their lives forever. Bound to be hospitable to their western visitors, the young geishas find themselves irrevocably set on different paths, with one seeking freedom from dishonour in death. But, instead of finding peace, she passes through the veil of the spirit world and returns as a ghostly apparition. Driven by hurt and rage, she takes her revenge and only an act of true devotion will help her find redemption.

Kenny lived and worked in Japan for a year and became fascinated by its culture. It captured his imagination. When he and Gwyneth Hughes, who wrote the libretto, were discussing ideas for ‘Geisha’ she asked if he knew of the legend of Okichi, a young geisha in the 1800s - and the seeds of a ballet were sown. “What made Okichi’s story more interesting was that the legend was so vague, there were many versions of it, which left it open”, said Kenny. “This meant we had a structure for the story, but our imaginations could run wild. It also allowed us to incorporate another aspect of Japanese culture – the Obon Festival of the dead, which is visually stunning and quite overwhelming in some ways. If you stop and think about life and death, the idea that you could meet the people that are no longer in your life again, is so powerful.” The original score is composed by Alexandra Harwood and will be played live at every performance by Northern Ballet Sinfonia. Sets and costumes are designed by Christopher Oram, with lighting by Alastair West, and Lesley Downer is the Historical Consultant. Age guidance 12+

Opera North’s New Home to be Named after Yorkshire Benefactor Opera North recently announced that its redeveloped HQ will bear the name of leading philanthropist, Dr Keith Howard OBE, a lifelong opera lover, founder of Emerald Group Publishing, and President of Opera North, in recognition of his personal gift of £11.25 million towards ‘Music Works’, Opera North’s current redevelopment project.

The Howard Opera Centre will house Opera North’s rehearsal studios, costume and wigs workshop, and administrative oﬃces. Situated on New Briggate and Harrison Street, it will create a world-class facility for opera; a new Education Studio and additional rehearsal spaces, including a rehearsal room for the Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North and music coaching rooms.

The Centre joins the Howard Assembly Room, another space named in recognition of Keith Howard’s support, which offers a diverse calendar of jazz, world music, folk, classical concerts, children’s opera, talks, film and installations. The Howard Assembly Room will reopen in 2021 with a new, fully accessible entrance and atrium, an increased number of performances, and a new restaurant and bar, replacing a row of vacant shop units on New Briggate. The target for the Music Works fundraising campaign is £18 million. Opera North has raised £15.6 million

In addition to Dr Howard’s donation, Leeds City Council has contributed £750,000, and £499,999 has been awarded by Arts Council England. The rest has come from private donors, trusts and supporters, including a £1 million donation from The Liz and Terry Bramall Foundation, and a significant contribution from Mrs Maureen Pettman. In addition, gifts have been pledged by The Wolfson Foundation, Backstage Trust, The Kirby Laing Foundation, The Foyle Foundation and The Garfield Weston Foundation. The Company needs to raise a further £2.4 million and is now looking to Patrons, Friends and audiences to play their part in the success of the redevelopment.

“The Howard Opera Centre will be a true centre of excellence, bringing together rehearsal spaces for world class opera productions with coaching rooms where singers can develop their vocal expertise, and specialist costume workshop spaces”, said Richard Mantle, General Director, Opera North. “A new hub for our Education work will create an inclusive space for our work with young people from across the city, bringing children and young people right to the heart of our creative community.” Opera North is a key driver of artistic innovation and skills in the region, permanently employing over 250 people including skilled costume-makers, stage managers, electricians, stage technicians, props-makers, sound and lighting technicians, educators, designers, and musicians, in addition to working with around 370 freelance performers, creatives and artists each year.

Irish History Month 2020 Irish History Month takes place throughout the month of March. An Irish Arts Foundation initiative, it exists to promote the many positive contributions that Irish people have made in Leeds, introducing new audiences to the vibrancy of Irish arts, heritage, culture and history. On Thursday 5th March, four distinguished second-generation Irish writers explore questions of identity and belonging at Headingley Library. Ian Duhig, Ray French, Moy McCrory and Kath McKay ask the perennial question “Where is home – here or Ireland?” Through their essays, fiction and poetry about music, family and history, they explore being ‘not quite British, not quite Irish’. Irish Arts Foundation Director, Des Hurley, will chair a discussion and presentation, ‘The Leeds Irish Centre. 1970-2020’, with the Sociable History Club at Leeds City Museum on Friday 6th March. Former Irish Arts Foundation Director, Chris O’Malley will chair a presentation and talk about ‘The Leeds Irish Centre – 1970 - 2020’ as part of the Leeds City Museum Sociable History Club lecture series on Friday 6th March.

County Wicklow writer, poet and performer Carmen Cullen performs the songs and tells the story of her aunt Delia Murphy in her roving show ‘Hello Delia Murphy’ at Montague Burton Resource Centre, Harehills, on Monday 9th March. Carmen provides a unique slant on Irish social history and the cultural climate of the times, underlining the fearless nature of Delia Murphy who promoted Irish folk songs and ballads. At the time it was almost impossible for a married woman with children to have a public profile, especially in showbusiness. As part of the ‘Sounds of Our City’ project, Conor MacMahon, will present the first public screening of his final year film ‘Home from Home’ on Saturday 14th March at Kirkstall Abbey House Museum. Conor is a Uilleann Piper and

Film and Television Production Student at the University of Bradford and has worked with Leeds CCÉ (Irish Music Association), Leeds Irish Centre and the Irish Arts Foundation to explore the current Irish music scene in Leeds, tracing the history of Irish immigration to the city. ‘Sounds of Our City’ is at Abbey House Museum until 31st December 2020. There’s a traditional Irish music session, hosted by local musicians, on Kirkstall Flyboat on the Leeds Liverpool Canal at Granary Wharf on the afternoon of Sunday 29th March. Throughout the month, an Irish educational and cultural exhibition, ‘Timeline’, can be viewed at the Hunslet Library & Community Hub. Arts&Culture Writing On Air 2020 Writing on Air is a four-day literature festival on the radio, broadcast from Chapel FM Arts Centre, from 25th – 29th March. Last year’s festival featured over 200 writers and performers in 65 programmes, and this year’s promises to be just as big. This time the theme is ‘Vision’ – what we see and choose not to see, visions for the future, bringing the past to light, mystic visions, optics. Celebrating Women from WW II To celebrate International Women’s Day on Saturday 7th March, Swarthmore Education Centre is hosting an afternoon tea party from 1 – 4pm. Special guests will include a number of local ladies all aged over 90! They will happily talk about the varied roles they played during the war – some were part of the reconnaissance, others worked on the buses, whilst still others were part of the munitions team. In addition, a wonderful artist from Wales, Patricia McKenna, will display her amazing paintings that celebrate and recognise a number of famous women from WWII. Leeds Lieder Art-Song Festival 2020 Leeds Lieder Festival 2020, ‘Ode to Joy’, is a four-day celebration of art song, running from Thursday 16th – Sunday 19th April at The Clothworkers’ Centenary Concert Hall, The University of Leeds, LS2 9JT. Once again, the festival places song at the centre of the cultural landscape, championing the artform, educating and growing audiences, and commissioning new works. Under the artistic directorship of pianist Joseph Middleton, it will be held at the University of Leeds for the first time and will be inviting a selection of worldclass artists to perform cornerstones of the Lieder repertoire, alongside new works commissioned for the Festival. An ambitious schedule of interactive and informative events for poets and amateur singers complements the programme.

Sir Thomas Allen leads an impressive cast through a 10th Anniversary Acrostic, culminating in a performance of Vaughan Williams’s ‘Serenade to Music’ (16 April).

A New Adaptation of Oliver Twist at Leeds Playhouse Leeds Playhouse will present a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ novel ‘Oliver Twist’ in the Quarry Theatre from 28th February – 21st March, ahead of a UK tour. Bold, brutal and beautiful, this new version will be directed by Leeds Playhouse’s Associate Director Amy Leach. It has been adapted by awardwinning playwright Bryony Lavery, with support from Graeae Theatre’s artistic director Jenny Sealey. Graeae is the UK’s leading disability-led theatre company, committed to putting D/deaf and disabled artists and audiences at the centre of its work. And, this is what has really driven this exciting new adaptation. Bryony Lavery has started afresh and set out to make the story more accessible, starting out by simplifying the Dickensian language. Expect changes! Fagin is female, Bill Sykes is deaf, as is the Artful Dodger. This talented, integrated company

works across language, visual impairment and deafness, making the story accessible to everyone. Haley Grindle’s strong, monochromatic design is an essential part of the visual storytelling, making extensive use of large projections, text, and sound. Every performance will feature integrated creative sign language, audio description and captioning. “Oliver Twist is a vivid, dark and visceral story and I am so excited to explore how adding artistic layers of creative sign language, audio description and captioning can enhance the storytelling for all audience members”, said Amy. “It will give the integrated ensemble cast of D/deaf, disabled and non-disabled actors the opportunity to play a brilliantly

varied range of characters and showcase a wide range of talent.” Brooklyn Melvin is Oliver, aided by Nadeem Islam as the Artful Dodger, and Caroline Parker as Fagin. Nancy will be played by Clare-Louise English, with Stephen Collins stepping into the brutal boots of Bill Sykes. The cast will be completed by Katie Erich, Rebekah Hill, Georgia Jackson, Steph Lacey, Jack Lord, Craig Painting, Mitesh Soni and Benjamin Wilson. 'The Leeds Mummy' is Heard....after a 3,000 Year Silence Nesyamun, the 'Leeds Mummy' who lies on the top ﬂoor of the City Museum may well have been dead for nearly 3,000 years but he is no longer silent. Writing in the journal 'Scientific Reports', a team of researchers recently announced that by using CT scans, taken at Leeds General Infirmary, in combination with 3D printing methods, they have been able to reconstruct Nesyamun's vocal tract and hear the sound that it would once have made. Nesyamun lived during the reign of Pharaoh Rameses XI (c.1099-1069 BCE) and worked as a temple scribe and priest at Karnak in Thebes (Luxor today). His mummified body was first brought to Leeds in the 1820s where it was studied by members of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society and later placed on display in the City Museum, which at that time was on Park Row. In 1941, Nesyamun had a lucky escape when he was moved shortly before a bombing raid that left the City Museum and some of its collections severely damaged. This type of research does of course raise serious ethical questions, but in carrying out this work, the researchers felt that they were respecting the customs of the time. According to Joann Fletcher of the University of York and a co-author on the paper, it was the hope of every ancient Egyptian that their soul would be able to speak after death and gain entry to the afterlife by telling the gods of judgement how virtuous their life had been. Inscriptions on Nesyamun's coffin suggest that he shared this hope, and so in carrying out this work, the researchers felt that they were in some way respecting his last wishes. When interviewed by 'The Guardian' newspaper about the work, Professor John Schofield of the University of York also pointed out that it might offer a novel and exciting way for the public to engage with the past.

I Wouldn't Start from Here ‘I wouldn’t start from here’ is an evening of readings, music and refreshments on Thursday 5th March, 7.30pm at Headingley Community Hub and Library, North Lane.

Lit Fest Fun Headingley LitFest has changed how it is presented over the last couple of years. Today it has a programme that is spread throughout the year, some of it in the form of poetry sessions for local primary schools with established poets Malika Booker and James Nash, and this year the organisers are also contributing to the new Leeds Lit Fest. “We have clustered three very different events together as our proud contribution to the new, citywide Leeds Lit Fest”, said Richard Wilcocks, Headingley LitFest Secretary. “A fourth event is our annual event for creative writers, which partners Headingley with Osmondthorpe.”

The performance takes place on Tuesday 10th March, 11am – 1pm at HEART, Bennett Road, Headingley, followed by homemade cake and hot drinks. Free entry but donations are requested for refreshments.

CommunityNews Parents Launch Meanwood Park Playground Appeal

A six-strong group of parents, who all have young children and regularly use Meanwood Park, has decided to put parent power into action and launch the Meanwood Park Playground Appeal to raise £200,000 to transform the Park’s playground. The playground is currently in a completely dilapidated state, with unsafe areas and play equipment that doesn’t work. It also suffers from serious drainage issues and in bad weather the park becomes flooded and boggy, making it unusable. Over the next ten months, the group will undertake various fundraising initiatives and appeal to local businesses to raise the funds needed, with the aim of raising the money required by December this year and completing the park refurb in Spring 2021. “I often take my children to the playground and I began to worry that either they or another child would get hurt because of the state it’s in”, said Francesca Chappell, who set up the group. “As Council funding for such things has been cut dramatically recently, it doesn’t have the money needed to transform the play area. So, the only way to make improvements is to raise the money ourselves.

“The park is such a lovely space and it’s a real shame that the playground has become so dilapidated. Our goal is to raise the money needed to create a safe, fun playground that will last and be enjoyed by thousands of children for many years to come. We’re hoping to capture the hearts of local residents and businesses to help raise the large sum of money we need.” The group has conducted an online survey to find out what people want from the play area and has started to liaise with local councillors and businesses. It has also created a limited number of branded reusable mugs, which are being sold at local markets and retailers to raise money and awareness of the appeal. Once the money has been raised, the group will use it to get the drainage issues sorted, before installing a new, safer play surface and a variety of durable play equipment. Hope of a Tree – A Brand New Piece from Schwa Schwa, made up of Peter Spafford on piano/vocals, Jacqui Wicks on vocals and Richard Ormrod on everything else, have performed at festivals all over the north of England. They are known for their sensitive, witty and inventive settings of poetry both recent and ancient. ‘Hope of a Tree’ is a new piece consisting of original songs and text and will premiere at Leeds Lit Fest this year. It is themed around the idea of trees, woods and forests, inspired by The Overstory, the Booker-nominated novel by Richard Powers. The songs are all settings of poems about trees and woods by poets such as Edna St. Vincent Millay, Rumi, A.E.Housman and, of course, Anon. Interspersed with the songs are readings from tree folklore and botany, as well as compelling accounts of tree activism from all over the world. Open Fires and Wood Burning Stoves I get a lot of queries about people having open fires, wood-burning stoves, outdoor chiminea, bonfires etc. Open fires and wood burning stoves have risen in popularity over recent years. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has produced a leaflet which provides simple steps for those using wood burning stoves or open fires, to reduce the environmental and health impacts. Unfortunately smoke from chimneys can cause breathing problems such as asthma.

You can buy ‘Ready to Burn’ fuel and the logo on these products ‘woodsure Ready to Burn’ means this is a guarantee of good quality dry wood. Freshly chopped wood should be dried out for two years before burning, wet wood can damage your stove or chimney. No treated wood or household rubbish should be burned as it can emit harmful fumes or toxic pollutants into your property. Stoves (annually) and chimneys (twice a year) should be maintained and swept. Wood burning stoves produce much less smoke than open fires. If you are thinking of purchasing one, consider one that is approved by Defra for use in smoke control areas. These have been tested to high standards to demonstrate low smoke emissions. Many urban areas are smoke control areas where you can only use authorised

smokeless fuels or exempted appliances. A fine of up to £1,000 can be payable if you break the rules (see https://smokecontrol. defra.gov.uk) Library Book Fines – Discontinued The Leeds Library Service has decided to discontinue fines for overdue books. This means a reduction in income for the service, but it has replaced its Library Management System which will allow significant savings. The new service cannot notify people by text/telephone when books are due back and customers not on email would not be able to be notified other than by post. Not chasing up overdue books will save around £8k on postage. In 2020 the library self-issue machines will require replacement due to their age. The ability to take financial payments at these machines costs approx. £1,800 per device and there are 60 of these devices. Dementia Friendly ‘Care for a Cuppa’ Opens in Bramhope In Bramhope, Catherine Birkby has been working towards making the village more dementia friendly. Her aim was to raise awareness of the condition with both residents and businesses. She formed a small group of volunteers, the majority of whom have had personal experience of dementia, and they have established a monthly meeting place for those with dementia and their carers. ‘Care for a Cuppa’ will be held at Bramhope Village Hall on the first Tuesday of each month starting on 3rd March, 1.30 – 3.30pm. Activities will include quizzes, crafts, exercises, games, singing, music, reminiscence and support for carers and the cost is just £2 per person. The group has already received support from local businesses. Walker Smale have offered free use of their office for meetings of the group and are sponsoring the hire of the room for the café. Estate Agent David Phillip has helped with the design of posters and promoted the group on social media. And, Mone Bros have also offered sponsorship.

Forty Years of Stories from Hollybush Friends of Hollybush recently launched ‘Hollybush 1979-2019: An Illustrated Oral History’ made up of stories collected over 12 months with the help of a £10,000 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The launch featured Amy-Jane Beer, author and Guardian Country Diarist, in conversation with Giles Cooper, Field Oﬃcer 1979-1982, Jessica Duffy, Project oﬃcer 1986 – 2016, Liz Boyd and Lisa Bedford both current volunteers and members of the History Group, The Hollybush History project features contributions from over 50 past staff and volunteers. The book is illustrated with photographs contributed by those featured and from the Hollybush archive, interspersed with images from posters, leaflets and newsletters. Colourful silk paintings were done at a workshop with Hollybush Primary School.

Being a small streaky-brown bird, the Twite may look a bit sparrow-like, but is much rarer, with very different habits. It is similar to a Linnet but more slender with a longer, more forked tail. Its upper body is quite dark and well streaked, its throat a pale orangey-brown, and its bill yellow in Winter. In Spring the male has a pink patch just above the tail. Its main habitats are areas of open country, hay meadows and the fringes of moorland, but always somewhere near farmland where seeds are available – its main source of food. As farming has become more intensified, with the loss of flower-rich hay meadows, the Twite has had to move northwards, with most breeding birds now found in the uplands of central and northern Britain. In the south Pennines it nests under rocky crags or in patches of bracken. In Winter, birds from continental Europe winter on the east coast, often in large flocks. The Twite has a harsh nasal call, which some say sounds as if it is saying its name. One interesting fact about the Twite is that it originated on the Tibetan plateau thousands

of years ago. When the ice sheets retreated, some birds moved into central Europe, while the rest returned to Asia. There are now two very distant separate populations of Twite in the world. Leeds RSPB Group

Although the weather can be unpredictable, March usually brings plenty of cheerful flowers to raise our spirits. Look out for Narcissi, Crocus, Hellebores, Primula and delicate down covered Pulsatilla. Sow and Grow

Seed for some flowers and veg. (such as chillis and tomatoes) can be sown indoors this month. There is usually no need to buy new plastic pots and containers each year, just give your old ones a wash and they are ready to use again – saving money and reducing plastic pollution. Tin cans (drilled for drainage), plastic food trays and punnets also make excellent containers for growing seeds and plants, and secondhand plastic pots are often available free from nurseries and garden centres if you ask. Shoots are forming, buds bursting and grass growing as the garden begins to come alive again, but beware! Also waking are the dreaded slugs and snails, intent on munching the emerging young shoots of plants such as Delphiniums, or gobbling baby seedlings before you have even noticed that the seeds have germinated. Fight back by putting

a barrier of hairy or spiky materials or a copper ring around vulnerable plants or newly planted seedlings.

Once the soil has begun to warm, you can reduce the mollusc population by using nematodes (tiny parasitic worms that kill slugs and snails) delivered in the form of a powder mixed with water and sprinkled over the soil. They will soon begin to attack and kill their hosts including the small slugs that live in the soil itself. Other methods of control include beer traps or evening patrols to pick off and ‘dispose of’ the pests. I try to avoid using slug pellets as I enjoy watching the visiting birds and hedgehogs who also feed on those pesky molluscs and I don’t want to risk poisoning them. Remember, if you do use slug pellets, you only need one per square metre – any more than that and the scent of them will attract slugs from all around. Cut and Mow

New Grants Promote Community Involvement in Leeds Parks Thirteen environmental groups and community organisations have been awarded funding to improve their local park by a new grants scheme aimed at promoting community involvement in urban parks. This follows the declaration of a Climate Emergency in Leeds in March 2019 and comes at a time of growing recognition of the wide-ranging benefits of urban green space. The groups received between £500 and £2,500 for projects of environmental benefit to public green space, highlighting the important role parks play cleaning the air, promoting biodiversity and mitigating the impact of climate change. The fund is part of the Love Leeds Parks initiative involving Leeds Community Foundation, Leeds Parks and Green Spaces Forum and Leeds City Council and is funded by business donations and visitor donations at busy park sites. It aims to protect and improve public green space, which includes over 4,000 hectares of woodlands, recreation grounds, cemeteries, nature reserves, allotments, and formal parks.

Projects awarded funding include: the restoration and extension of a heavily silted pond in Gledhow Valley Woods; tree planting to provide shade and improve biodiversity around a Halton play area; and strengthening riverbanks around Meanwood and Woodhouse to reduce flooding risk. “We are very grateful for the Leeds Parks Fund grant which will help us to create a permanent, sustainable pond and new habitats for wildlife including newts, dragon flies, insects and butterflies”, said Martin Calvert, chair of Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods. The grants round was heavily over-subscribed and the partners involved in Love Leeds Parks plan to fundraise for another grants round later this year.

Posing as tutors, a housekeeper and a driver, the Kims soon relish their new life in the privileged circle of a rich and gullible family. But deep within the house there’s a sinister secret which threatens to derail their best laid plans... From the first reel, 'Parasite' stands out as a special piece of picture making. Striking cinematography and immersive sound captures busy Korean landscapes, dim backstreets and torrential weather with stunning detail. Its ambiguous and uneven characters are photographed in tight portraits too — something the vanity of Hollywood would scarcely permit. It immediately feels very different to the norm, yet there’s more to 'Parasite' than its other-worldly Korean novelty.

That’s because the production is the single-minded work of auteur Bong Joon Ho. His script freely wanders around its world with a documentary lens, exploring its compact cast of desperate and dubious individuals with a forensic focus. There’s no judgement from the director, simply questions for the viewer: Do the rich deserve to be preyed upon? Are the crimes of the poor ethically defensible, as a redistribution of wealth? Dozens of subplots bubble beneath the surface, ranging from an inappropriate romance to an accidental murder, a natural disaster and a haunting talisman. Meanwhile, the plan to penetrate and feed off the rich drives forward a thrilling and comedic hustle that somehow has you rooting for the family of fraudsters. It’s also very funny, and tense, and touching, and violent. Perhaps this

variety is part of the film’s appeal, and why it almost defies traditional categorisation. 'Parasite' sets out as a quirky drama, progresses into comedy, becomes a Hitchcockian thriller, then a crime chiller, and ultimately delivers a Shakespearian tragedy. Yet somehow it all knits together. The film is steeped in magical realism too — a tradition the West freely accepts in fantasy and horror genres, but perhaps less so in kitchen sink capers. The mystical properties of a lucky stone, for example, overshadows the movie with a portentous dread — a sense that despite all the domestic affairs, everything could suddenly shift onto another plane, which it does with shocking abandon. Yet at its heart, one message remains consistent: the woeful disparity between those who struggle to live below the line, against others who enjoy a cushioned life of comfort and excess. The gross separation of two worlds is painfully illustrated, even down to an individual’s scent. That’s something tough to convey on screen, yet it’s defined in a poignant and critically devastating way. But is all of this really such a breakthrough in movie making, and does it warrant the frenzy of praise? Over a decade ago, Bong Joon Ho's 'The Host' – a masterful take on 'Jaws' - proved that the unconventional narratives of Korean storytelling will fly with mainstream Western audiences, and have been doing so for some time. Perhaps the Oscar mania is less about praising the film, and more about the establishment congratulating themselves for catching up with what the public have been enjoying for years. Well done.

Either way, in a small but vital note, kudos must go to the team behind the subtitles for this picture, which are so well-spotted you almost forget you’re reading your way through the dialogue. And tabloid hype aside, 'Parasite' is a film that deserves attention. It’s occasionally imperfect, because it’s an unfettered, unapologetic vision commanded by one artist from beginning to end. That’s a rare thing in popular cinema today. Rarer still, that the final production is quite brilliant in almost every regard. Go see — it’s a film that’ll follow you home.

JazzLeeds’s international Spring 2020 programme has already started at SevenArts in Chapel Allerton. Thursday 19th March sees jazz vocalist, Ian Shaw, teaming up with saxophonist/ composer Iain Ballamy, and pianist Jamie Safir. On Saturday 28th March, pianist and composer Nikki Iles brings her 18-piece orchestra to Seven, featuring Julian Siegel, Tori Freestone, Karen Sharp and Gareth Lochrane, amongst others. Expect great jazz from top musicians highlighting Nikki’s distinctive creative voice. On Thursday 30th April, Sound of 59, who were such a hit at last year’s JazzLeeds Festival, return to celebrate a pivotal year in jazz history. 1959 saw the release of jazz albums by Charlie Mingus, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, John Coltrane and many others. Sounds of 59 features some of the best jazz musicians in Leeds. On Thursday 7th May, it’s Lukas Oravec, a young Slovakian trumpet player. His music has a very distinctive sound. He’s joined by saxophonist Alex Garnett, pianist Jami Sheriff, Dave Walsh on drums, and Pete Turner on bass.

NYC Ari Hoenig makes a welcome return on Thursday 14th May with a trio of guitarist Tom Ollendorff and bassist Conor Chaplin, delivering sharp, streetwise modern jazz that borrows as much from drum ‘n’ bass as it does from ECM and dirty downtown aesthetics. JazzLeeds Sunday Afternoon Programme, featuring the best of musicians from the region and beyond, continues at Seven Arts and Inkwell in Chapel Allerton. Three great jazz guitarists - British legend Gary Boyle, Canadian maestro Jeff Hewer, and Norwegian rising star Eirik Svela, are scheduled to play; plus, two award winning singers – Zoe Gilby and Louse Gibbs. The Mabgate Swingers and Soul Surgeons are also on the programme. John Illsley’s ‘Life and Times of Dire Straits’ is not just ‘an evening with’ with a bit of chat and the odd anecdote, it’s much more. A founder member and long-time bass player of Dire Straits, of course there is chat and stories, and he’s bringing them to City Varieties on Tuesday 17th March. John will be interviewed by Paul Cummins, one of Dire Straits’ old managers who has his own take on the good old days. Plus, there’s the music. Along with three members of his own band, John swings through Dire Straits’ biggest hits, as well as some of his own music. Dire Straits sold over 100 million albums, spent 1,100 weeks on the UK album charts alone and received countless awards, including four Grammies and three Brits, as well as an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The show takes you on a fascinating journey with some wonderful songs and great stories. Learn to Play Day Returns Learn to Play Day, the free national event to encourage everyone to start making music, returns to Yorkshire this March. Supported by Jools Holland and run by the charity Music for All, the 2020 Learn to Play Day will take place on Saturday 28th/ Sunday 29th March, and will see music shops, teachers, venues and schools partner with leading musical instrument brands to offer thousands of free music lessons. Since being launched nine years ago, the Learn to Play Day initiative has helped thousands of people pick up and play a musical instrument. Many had never played before, while others played as children but gave up. Held in partnership with the Musicians’ Union, the ‘Take It Away’ scheme and Making Music, the Learn to Play Day has been growing in popularity with a record 10,000 free lessons held last year.

Brendan Croker Kicks Off Fundraising at Swarthmore An evening of music from Brendan Croker (5 O’Clock Shadows, The Notting Hillbillies) and support bands kicks off Swarthmore's Crowdfunding campaign for The Hall on Friday 27th March at Swarthmore Education Centre, Woodhouse Square LS3 1AD. The Centers Hall is currently in a state of disrepair and needs to be completely refurbished so that it can once again provide a great space to hire out for events, or as an entertainment venue for the community.

The plan is to fix the roof, redecorate and refit the chair store and provide an area for a pop-up café/bar. Income from the café/ bar will be invested in further resources for The Hall, including a projector and screen, sound system, lighting etc. Swarthmore’s aim is to serve the community as best they can with affordable daytime room hire for charities, community groups and organisations. For weekends and evenings, The Hall will provide the perfect venue for a social calendar of events – from fairs and community group activities, to theatre, music, comedy nights, parties, film nights etc. It will be an affordable, central space to be enjoyed by all.

Meanwood Fun Run 2020! Following the success of the first ever Meanwood Fun Run last year, the race is back! On Sunday 17th May, starting at 1pm, participants will be taking to the track at The Brownlee Centre in Lawnswood. The race is open to everyone in the area, aged four and up, and there is an option of walking, jogging, or running over a 2K or 5K distance. So, get your trainers on and join in the fun! Sponsorship opportunities are also available. All participants will receive a specially designed medal. The money raised will go towards classroom and sports resources for Meanwood C of E School.

Thousands of runners and walkers are expected to head to the Yorkshire Dales on Sunday 31st May for The Yorkshire Dales trail and walking festival.

Cookridge Community Run Remembers Gareth Dunn For the second year running, Cookridge Community Run is set to raise funds for Cancer Research UK in memory of Gareth Dunn, who raised over £120,000 for the charity whilst battling cancer. Gareth was just 27 when he died in 2018. An active sportsman, he made the most of every opportunity, and even ran the London Marathon in 2018. The 2020 10k Run takes place on Sunday 17th May and up to 500 runners are expected to take part.

The organisers are also encouraging people to get involved as race marshals, car park attendants, first aid assistants and volunteers, and would love to see the community turn out to support the runners. Leeds 10K is Heading in a New Direction!

Take on a Challenge for Wheatfields Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice has a wide array of treks, runs and cycle rides to choose from if you would like to get fit whilst raising funds for your local hospice.

On Sunday 5th July thousands of runners will gather once again for the annual Asda Foundation Leeds 10K, but this year they will be heading in a new direction. Event organisers, Run for All, are giving runners a new challenge. Previously, the route was a favourite for those looking for a fast and largely flat route, but now runners will be able to go for even better PBs as this route will be mainly downhill! Beginning at the University of Leeds it will take runners out past the Parkinson Steps, and will feature sights such as Hyde Park, First Direct Arena and Leeds Art Gallery before finishing in Millennium Square. The race is the original legacy run set up by Jane Tomlinson in 2007. Jane died soon after launching it, however her legacy lives on and it is now a hugely popular event on the city’s running calendar, priding itself on its inclusivity.

Swim the Channel Without Leaving Leeds! If you have always wanted to swim The Channel but were put off by the choppy waters, jellyfish and months of training, the St Gemma’s sponsored ‘virtual swim’ is the perfect challenge for you! The idea is to complete the 21-mile crossing by swimming that distance in your local pool in under 12 weeks. It is free to register and every pound you raise will help St Gemma’s care for people living with a terminal illness. By swimming an average of 112 lengths a week (starting 1st April), you will complete the Channel crossing in 12 weeks. Swimming is low impact and works the whole body, so this is ideal for people of all abilities and ages. It’s a great way to build up your stamina or, if you’re a keen swimmer, really push yourself to see if you can complete it even faster.

The Amazing Things Young People Do! Leeds Rotary Club recently presented Young Citizen Awards to 25 young people, aged 11 – 24, from schools, colleges and youth organisations in Leeds. All are shining examples of what young people are doing for their families, schools, fellow students and communities. The audience was impressed and moved by the problems some of these young people had faced. Nouwaar Muhammad Al Khoder, a Syrian refugee from Leeds East Academy, had survived a bombing and third degree burns, but is a resilient, hardworking student, a wonderful role model for her peers. Michael Bottomley (11) from Ralph Thorseby School raised over £3,000 for charities. Jessica May Frost (14) is a talented singer and has performed at numerous charity events. Alfie Watling (14) from Leeds West Academy has supported Wills Way Charity for two years, clocking up over 50 hours of volunteering. From Rodillian Academy, Riana Tiffany (12) knitted 200 poppies raising nearly £400 for the British Legion, and Amelia Morris and Eva Walton (14) raised over £3,000 for Breast Cancer Haven. Tabeer Tahir (17) from Co-op Priesthorpe Academy fundraised for various charities and played a key role in a winning LEAP enterprise project.

Helping fellow students as learning supporters, mentors and interpreters and generally helping both in and out of school were : Rachel and Maria Farmer (17) from St Joseph’s Youth Support Group; Tom Allan (17) St Mary’s Menston; Harriet Pollard (18) Abbey Grange Academy; Rayan El Menafi (15) Leeds City Academy; and Maddison Gatewood-Duncan and Manraj Sond (18) Allerton High School. Ana Marie-Didila (15) from Leeds East Academy worked to bridge the gap between Gypsy, Roma and Traveller pupils. Abigail Benn (16) from Leeds West Academy has been signed with Leeds Rhinos and referees in local Primary Schools. Grace Azouan (15) from Leeds City Academy translates and mentors young students struggling with English. Oliver Thompson and Jack Munns (19) from 185 Squadron Air Cadets, and Joshua Hill and Daniel Griffin (21) from 2527 Squadron, mentored and trained younger cadets. Charlotte Peirse (16) from St Mary’s Menston, volunteers tirelessly to support her church, and collaborates with the Bishop for work with young people in the Diocese. Harriet Pollard volunteers for Riding for the Disabled every week. And, Leeds Mencap was represented by volunteers Maddie Austin and Abby Emmerson. These are just a few examples of the enterprise and committment shown by Young Citizen Awards winners. Meanwood Rangers is Calling Girls Aged 14-17! Meanwood Rangers, a newly established youth group, is accepting new members. Part of Girlguiding UK, Rangers is a group for older teens (14 – 17), providing a girl-only space for them to have fun and learn new skills. The programme is created by the girls themselves who choose what they would like to do to create an engaging set of activities – including trips out and, next term, a camping weekend! Rangers also have to navigate issues such as body confidence and mental wellbeing through its peer education programme, giving young women the opportunity to talk about the issues they face. GSAL Students Raise Vital Funds for Kashmir Earthquake Appeal Concerned about the thousands of people affected by the earthquake in Kashmir last September, students at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) and the school’s Muslim faith leaders organised a fun family event and raised over £5,000 for the charity Penny Appeal.

The event was organised by the Muslim faith leaders who are all Year 13 students, supported by Mrs Nema Saeed, individual needs teaching assistant and Muslim faith coordinator, and was the third annual charity event by the school’s Islamic Society.

In addition to £3,000 raised on the day, donations kept on coming after the event, reaching a grand total of £5,246. Students presented the cheque to Khalil Benkhalil, Penny Appeal fundraiser manager for the north of England, for the charity’s Kashmir earthquake fund.

Theatre Company Blah Blah Blah will be performing ‘The Vultures’ Song’, a play by award-winning children’s playwright Mike Kenny and inspired by the partition of India, on tour to venues in Leeds, Bradford, Trafford, York and Barnsley. Set in a fictional, timeless place, ‘The Vultures’ Song’ was one of three plays nominated as Best Play for Young Audiences at the 2019 Writers’ Guild Awards. Written for age 9+, it follows a young girl’s search for a new home after she is forced to leave her own. Four curious vultures tell her tale, transforming into the characters she meets along the way. There’s a protective older sister, friendly neighbours who take a risk to help, people making the most of a divided country, and other children who are now better off. Blah Blah Blah first toured the show in 2018. “I am reminded of how the performance works on so many different levels”, said Deborah Pakkar-Hull,
