Despite being in lockdown, many people have been beavering away behind the scenes to keep things going and we are happy to bring you news of a few of these this month. Among the hardest hit areas, of course, are our wonderful theatres and all the associated things that go with them – the City Varieties has just chalked up 155 Years! And Leeds Playhouse has been concentrating on keeping the community engaged creatively; and Leeds Grand Theatre has been busy rescheduling some great upcoming

We learn that Horsforth Food Hub is feeding 150 people a week; Friends of Roundhay Park have been very busy; being at home has encouraged people to recycle more; and numerous volunteers have been helping people who are lonely and isolated. People have had very different experiences – some have flourished, others have had a real struggle. Everyone is going to need help and encouragement over the coming months. Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford IVY BENSON (1913-1993) And her All Girls Band Leeds girl Ivy Benson topped the bill in the 1930s and 40s as a star jazz saxophonist and leader of a talented, glamorous all girls band, beating off prejudice and competition from the many famous male dance bands of the time. She reached a peak of popularity in the Second World War, when she and her Girls toured the country and broadcast daily on the radio – everybody tuned in then – bringing rhythm and song, some joy and fun, and the promise of happier times, to people at home and the troops overseas.

Ivy was born in 1913 in her grandparents’ pub, the Malt Shovel, in Lowerhead Row (now the Headrow), near the corner with Vicar Lane. Her father Douglas Benson, always known as ‘Digger’, worked originally as a riveter but doubled as a musician, playing trombone in the pit at the Empire theatre in Briggate. He was later to feature in and run his own dance bands in Leeds. When Ivy was six, the family moved to 59 Cemetery Road, Beeston (now with a blue plaque) and she went to the local school, St Luke’s. From the start her father had musical ambitions for her – she had piano lessons from age five, and he taught her the clarinet and the trombone. She was a born performer: when she was nine, she featured in an early Children’s Hour radio programme playing ‘In a Persian Market’, and a year later in 1923 she won a talent contest at the Empire singing the latest hit ‘Yes, we have no bananas!’ Then she acquired a Benny Goodman record and fell in love with jazz. It inspired her to take up the clarinet and later the saxophone – mostly regarded then as for men only! She won a scholarship to the Leeds College of Art when she left school at 14, but money was short. So she went to work at Montague Burton’s huge factory in Hudson Road, Burmantofts, at 15 shillings a week, which meant she could save up for her first alto

sax. She worked all day from 8 till 6, then played at dances most nights from 8 until 2 or 3 am – dancing was all the rage. In the end it was too much and she left the factory. She joined the Leeds-based ‘Rhythm Girls’ band and worked with them and other groups until, at 23, she got a chance to go to London where she found a job in a sleazy night club. There she was spotted by the bandleader Teddy Joyce, and toured with his band ‘the Girlfriends’ (sometimes back to Leeds) as a featured soloist – ‘the ace saxophonist of Great Britain’. When war began, with many male musicians leaving for the Front, she formed her own all girls band – it took confidence and organisation. The band won an audition for a popular touring revue, ‘Radio Rodeo’ starring Hylda Baker, and then, with the help of the impresario Jack Hylton, was booked into Covent Garden, which had been converted into a ballroom. In 1943 (in spite of protests from male musicians) they got the coveted job of BBC house band, based in Bristol, broadcasting at all hours of the night and day to the troops as well as to home audiences. In 1944 Ivy’s band topped the bill at the London Palladium for 6 months, and at the end of the war was personally invited by Field Marshal Montgomery to fly to Berlin to join the victory celebrations. Tours with

ENSA followed all over Western Europe – topping the popularity polls – while at home they starred in shows around the country and at Butlin’s holiday camps. Ivy and her girls offered a sensational combination of musicianship and glamour. Her girls had to play brilliantly and look like film-stars – and behave themselves too. They worked hard and played hard: she had a constant turnover of band members who left to get married! Recruiting often from Northern brass bands, she gave many women their first chance of an exciting life as professional musicians. Her own personal life was less successful – her two marriages ended in divorce, without children. She went on fronting her band into the 1970s, but the big band era was over. She lived with her father for many years but after his death in 1977 she retired to Clacton-on-Sea, where she used to entertain holidaymakers by playing the electronic organ. She died in 1993.

of Gold’ Exhibition Goes Online

Chorus Just Can’t Stop Singing! Like all choirs during the Pandemic, Leeds Festival Chorus is very concerned about when rehearsals and concerts will be possible again. For now, everything must take place on screen. Already, rehearsals are well underway for a performance optimistically planned for Leeds Town Hall later this year – a new piece specially commissioned from opera composer Jonathan Dove and poet and broadcaster Ian McMillan entitled 'The Tin Soldier'.

Before closing its doors, the Royal Armouries were busy putting the finishing touches to a major new exhibition celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Field of Cloth of Gold, as well as a supporting programme of Tudor Power & Glory events.

Unable to stay silent for long, 82 members of the Chorus recently recorded Rachmaninov’s Bogoroditse Djevo, an established part of the Chorus's repertoire, from home. Although the Chorus had not done anything like it before, it has already been broadcast on BBC Radio 3's 'In Tune' programme and has been uploaded to YouTube and Social Media. The enormous task of editing 82 individual parts, all recorded at home, fell to Rebecca Taylor, well known as the piano accompanist at rehearsals. City Varieties Music Hall – 155 Years of Colourful History City Varieties Music Hall may well be temporarily closed, but behind those closed doors lie 155 years of colourful history – as of last month, it’s the longest running music hall in the UK! When Charles Thornton, opened his ‘New Music Hall and Fashionable Lounge’ in 1865 few would have guessed that the much-loved venue would still be packing in audiences more than 150 years later. The Varieties’ stage has welcomed many of the world’s greatest entertainers, from Harry Houdini and Lilly Langtree to John Bishop and Russell Crowe. Hidden up a cobbled street just off Briggate, it began life as a room above a pub, established for the working people of Leeds to be entertained. Its sister venue, Leeds Grand Theatre, was meant for the higher classes – a saying at the time was ‘wear your flat cap to the City Varieties and your top hat to the Grand Theatre’. The Varieties changed hands and names numerous times. In 1941, Harry Joseph leased it from the White Swan Estate Company. Joseph is probably best known for staging striptease shows where the girls could pose, but not move.

Popular titles included ‘Strip Strip Hooray’, ‘Bubble and Peep’ and ‘Fillies in Frillies’. Then, in 1953, it was used by the BBC for a pilot programme about the old-time music hall, which resulted in ‘The Good Old Days’, produced by Barney Colehan. Over the years, the show featured numerous well and lesser known performers, including: Les Dawson, Barbara Windsor, Bruce Forsyth, Eartha Kitt, John Inman, Ken Dodd and Barry Cryer. The show ran for 30 years. Audiences were encouraged to dress in Victorian garb - and they duly obeyed! No longer televised, ‘The Good Old Days’ still runs today with acts like ventriloquist Steve Hewlett, who came fourth ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent; comedian/magician Josh Benson, who appears with his dad and went on to star in Tim Firth and Gary Barlow’s musical ‘Calendar Girls’; and Goronwy Thom, a juggler/unicyclist.

Today, City Varieties Music Hall is renowned for hosting some of the best in live music, variety, comedy and National Theatre Live and delayed screenings, as well as its hugely popular Rock ’n’ Roll Pantos. It has also played host to Michael McIntyre, John Bishop, Sara Pascoe, Jack Whitehall, Boy George, Kerry Ellis, Russell Crowe and the Queen and Prince Phillip. The theatre’s thriving Youth Theatre, curriculum-linked schools’ workshops and training provision of placements and apprenticeships, enable young people from across the city to access the arts, build confidence and develop skills. 2020 was to be an exciting year for The Varieties, Leeds Grand Theatre, and Hyde Park Picture House. Aside from The Picture House Project, other projects were also in the pipeline, which will hopefully be delivered on reopening. Like all theatres around the country, the pandemic has plunged them into very difficult times. Leeds Arts University Presents First Onlineonly Degree Show Leeds Arts University launches its first onlineonly undergraduate degree show on 1st July. Over 500 works of art, animation, illustration, graphic design, fashion, textiles, creative advertising and photography, from across ten undergraduate courses, will be presented digitally. The University encourages students to question ideas, experiment and respond to the world in creative and radical ways. “Our undergraduate show is a great focus and celebration for students and staff alike”, said Professor Simone Wonnacott, Vice-Chancellor. “Unfortunately, this year’s cohort will not be able to show their work in the University buildings because of Covid-19. However, we hope many more friends, family, industry professionals, and those looking for creative inspiration and

stimulation will experience this visually stunning and ambitious online exhibition.”

Walking Home: Opera North’s Sound Journeys for Lockdown ‘Walking Home: Sound Journeys for Lockdown’ is Opera North’s commission for BBC Arts and Arts Council England’s ‘Culture in Quarantine’ programme,.

Building on its history of creating innovative sound walks, five artists will write and record new works specifically to be listened to whilst walking. The contributors – cellist and composer Abel Selaocoe, qanun virtuoso Maya Youssef, oud player and composer Khyam Allami, vocalist, violinist and songwriter Alice Zawadski, and accordionist and experimentalist Martin Green of the folk trio Lau, will be crossing folk, jazz, Middle Eastern and African traditions, classical and contemporary music, with a tendency to experiment and break the confines of genre. ‘Walking Home’ is a vibrant cross-section of music-making in Britain today, made by musicians under lockdown for audiences in the same predicament. It engages with walking and solitary activity, and each 15-minute piece offers an opportunity to renew our connections with our environment. “The spark for ‘Walking Home’ came from the strange alchemy we found between walker, place and music that was powerfully evident in the past sound journey commissions we made for the Humber Bridge and River Tyne”, said Jo Nockels, Opera North’s Head of Projects. “While these new commissions are on a more intimate scale, all five respond to the dynamic of walking, listening through headphones and taking in your surroundings to produce an experience created by the listener as much as by the artists.”

the 2019 PRS New Music Biennale, combining microtonal tuning, ancient Arabic musical modes and generative software. His sound walk takes a cinematic approach to the atmosphere of urban areas under lockdown. Abel Selaocoe spent a recent Opera North Resonance residency working on new solo music for the cello, influenced by traditional African instruments. His sound journey will acknowledge the beneficial effects that he has felt from walking over the past weeks. Maya Youssef’s intense and thoughtful music is rooted in the Arabic classical tradition but takes inspiration from Western classical music and jazz.

Martin Green’s reputation as a composer was cemented by an Ivor Award for his Opera North commission for the Great Exhibition of the North in 2018. Evolving over the course of a walk along the banks of the River Tyne, ‘Aeons’ featured the Orchestra and Chorus of Opera North and Becky Unthank. His contribution to this series has an early morning walk in mind. Khyam Allami’s haunting installation ‘Requiem for the 21st Century’ was an Opera North commission for

Alice Zawadzki’s output is prodigious and eclectic. Her second solo album, ‘Within You is a World of Spring’, showcased her mastery of a range of styles in an inspired collection of songs. ‘Walking Home’ will be available across BBC Radio and Television, through podcasts on BBC Sounds, and via the BBC Arts website.

An Outdoor Gallery at Sunnybank Sunny Bank Mills in Farsley have created an Outdoor Gallery featuring eleven brightly coloured images of work by some of the Mills’ studio holders. “The gallery team had been thinking about how it could continue to support the artists with studios in the Mill during lockdown”, said Jane Kay, Arts Director. “This is a perfect way of celebrating them as artists and brightening up the stone walls. I don’t know why we didn’t think of it before!”

Arts&Culture Leeds Playhouse Continues to Engage Creatively Whilst Leeds Playhouse’s doors are closed to the public due to Covid-19 and on-stage work has paused, the Playhouse’s main priority is Creative Engagement with those who are most isolated during this time. As well as supporting digital streaming of its co-produced work, there is a new programme of activity called ‘Playhouse Connect’. The Playhouse’s fortnightly newsletter, packed with information about what the Playhouse is doing, activities and wellbeing tips, is going out to over 1,500 people, as well as creative activities being posted to isolated older people at home and in care homes through a partnership with Age UK. Over 300 calls have been made to individuals at risk of becoming chronically isolated, including members of Heydays, young people and our Asmarina Voice refugee and asylum seekers’ choir. Regular online sessions are being run by the Playhouse for people living with dementia and their supporters, for young carers and for older people. In addition, a creative chain letter for young people with learning disabilities, including pictures drawn from their windows, is underway. The Playhouse has also launched a new project for young people who were about to take their GCSEs. To date, 16 videos and creative lesson resources have been created for partner schools which have been accessed by hundreds of children as part of their home schooling.

Two activities to look out for this month are: • Shlomo’s Homeskool Beatbox Adventures – a weekly event for young people and their families to have some fun, learn beatboxing and write a song together, that the Playhouse is hosting;

The Performance Ensemble Seeks More Members Over 60

The Performance Ensemble, a company of performers over the age of 60, is on a quest to grow its membership and gather 1,000 stories from the city’s older population that will ultimately help to create a piece of theatre for the Leeds Cultural Festival in 2023.

“We are now actively looking for new members”, said Alan Lyddiard, Artistic Director. “There is no prerequisite – you don’t have to have experience in theatre or the arts, but you must be over 60!” Some of the company members work as actors, writers, and dancers, but others, from a range of backgrounds and diverse cultures, joined the company as a first-time experience. “We celebrate the fullness of life and explore vulnerability, resilience, and ageing”, said Alan. “I want to work with people in what I call 'the space between professional, amateur and community arts practice’, concentrating on shared knowledge and experience; when you are older you have many things to contribute and each of us will learn from the other.”

CommunityNews Lockdown Has Brought Some Positive Outcomes

Our lives have changed in unimaginable ways over the last three months. And, whilst we must never lose sight of how awful things have been, and how much of a struggle lies ahead, it’s also important to reflect on the positive ways in which many of us have responded to such a difficult situation. On streets across Leeds, neighbours have supported each other in ways most of us have never seen before. Via WhatsApp, Mutual Aid groups or socially distanced chats over the fence, many of us have used some of the extra time we’ve had to reach out to help others. And when it comes to what we’re most interested in at Zero Waste Leeds – waste reduction - there are good stories to share too. Most of us have spent more time at home than usual over and, as a result,

we’ve generated more waste - Leeds City Council reported an increase of around 15% in black bin waste during the first couple of months of lockdown. This is why our focus during the first ten weeks of lockdown - working alongside the Council - was on stayat-home waste reduction – in part to limit the pressure on our hard-working bin collection crews. With the early suspension of garden waste collections and the closure of Household Waste Sites, we focused on supporting people to manage their garden waste at home – primarily by sharing lots of tips on home composting. After an initial period of panic buying, many of us settled into new habits for buying and preparing meals and we got into the kind of habits that can help us to reduce food waste – simple things like shopping to a list, checking our

cupboards and planning our meals. Research from WRAP suggests that during lockdown a typical household threw away around a third fewer food items like milk, bread and chicken. At Zero Waste Leeds we’re now looking at how to make some of these habits stick. How can we encourage more people to compost their garden waste and veg scraps? How can we continue to reduce the amount of good food that we throw away? And, how can we keep working in a whole range of ways to waste less, and throw fewer things away? The Principle Trust Offers a Free Holiday for Key Workers The Principle Trust Children’s Charity, based in Skipton, aims to improve the quality of life for children across Yorkshire by providing free holidays at one of their five holiday homes. The charity works closely with referring services and government bodies to support children and their families. Earlier this year, it became aware of the increase in disadvantaged children as a result of having a parent/caregiver as a key worker during the pandemic. The Trust announced that it was to begin fundraising to support key workers by sending them and their children on a free break. For the first time since opening, it has made applications for free breaks available to the public. It is asking for key workers to either nominate themselves or colleagues and friends, to be in with a chance of receiving a free, hot tub holiday. The Trust will allocate free breaks at one of its five holiday homes, depending on availability and park

LJHA Supports Tenants Through Lockdown Leeds Jewish Housing Association (LJHA) has gone out of its way to support tenants and the wider community through the coronavirus lockdown. Staff and local partners acted quickly to protect the tenants at risk from Covid-19 because of age, underlying medical conditions or other reasons. “All of our tenants were spoken to by staff within seven days of the lockdown being announced”, said. Mark Grandfield, Chief Executive. “Since then, the most vulnerable have been contacted several times each week. With so many tenants unable to leave their homes, hot and frozen kosher meals have been delivered to doorsteps in partnership with the Leeds Jewish Welfare Board. And, support for tenants struggling financially has been made available through hardship grants, alongside our regular advice service.”

It has been equally important for the association to keep spirits up by providing a range of leisure pursuits. And, much credit must go to young people across the community. “Working with The Zone youth club and supported by the Leeds Jewish Representative Council, we built a new website to connect north Leeds community members and friends of all ages”, said Craig Simons, LJHA Director of Operations. “It includes simple instructions on how to sign-up to Zoom, together with details of online exercise and cookery classes, craft workshops and interactive discussions led by experts in their fields. “Lucy Sherman, who played Dorothy in Leeds Playhouse’s ‘Wizard of Oz’, gave an impromptu concert in one

of our courtyards with tenants watching from their balconies and, on the 75th anniversary of VE Day, young people packed and delivered special boxes for residents containing a full afternoon tea, crosswords, word searches and poems. “Given the uncertainties of Covid19 restrictions, and the likelihood of many LJHA tenants having to shield for some time yet, we are resolved to continue providing these enhanced services.”

CommunityNews HEART is Gradually Emerging from Lockdown

HEART in Headingley closed its doors at the end of March, with no idea as to when it might reopen. The team got together and brainstormed how to continue providing a service to the community through connection, activities and storytelling. Using social media, they asked people to share their experiences through ‘Headingley During Lockdown’, allowing them to share the variety of things people were doing to cope – including baking bread, picking spring flowers, and keeping active – as well as being able to thank the ‘Heroes of Headingley’. Despite a few technical difficulties, they were soon running a successfully monthly quiz, a weekly Lockdown Film Club, and a range of online Yoga classes. They also introduced the community to the wonderful people who make HEART tick through ‘Humans of HEART’, sharing their individual stories. All the staff has been retained, with most being furloughed. It has been really important to keep in touch. Everyone has met regularly via Zoom and all the regular volunteers are desperate to get back and help. HEART has received great support – the Council and local councillors have provided both a donation and the

opportunity to add off-licence sales to their takeaway offer. Supporters have raised over £2,000, and HEART’s Crowdfunder page https://www. crowdfunder.co.uk/support-heartthrough-this-uncertain-time has been vital in helping to fund some of the changes needed around the building. The donations have been great, and the wonderful comments received show how important HEART is to the whole community. Now, they are excited to welcome everyone back. The building has been prepared to ensure everyone is safe with two metre markings, perspex guards at Reception and in Assembly Bar + Kitchen, and the outside space is being utilised for the takeaway service, to limit the number of people who need to enter the building. There will be challenges ahead as HEART tries to provide space for all its groups to meet and to provide a dining service again. For now, people can enjoy the takeaway service and continue to support the Centre by popping by for a coffee, some cake or a great burger! New Information Board for Woodland Garden

In a corner of Canal Gardens, just inside the gateway from Old Park Road, is a small woodland garden created by the Friends of Roundhay Park. Easy to pass by without realising it, the Friends have installed an information board giving the history of the garden from the days when it was just a neglected corner with overgrown plants. All construction work was carried out by volunteers and, because of the limitations of the site, no machinery was used – just lots of enthusiasm and muscle power! The garden was opened in 2005 and in the summer of 2018 was awarded ‘Platinum’ in the Open Spaces category of Britain in Bloom. The information board was generously supported by funding from Leeds City Council Wellbeing / Youth Activity Fund Inner North East Community Committee, and in March Cllr Angela Wenham joined members of The Friends to mark the occasion officially. Community Litter Picking If you are as keen to see Leeds clean and pristine and free of litter and fly tipping as we suspect you are – why not join a growing army of like-minded volunteers by visiting the Litter Free Leeds Facebook page to find out how you can get involved. The group maintains strict social distancing when out in small groups, and can provide litter grabbers and distinctive purple litter bags if you don’t have your own. People are enjoying so much being outdoors, unfortunately some appear incapable of taking their rubbish home or using the now unsealed litter bins! Get picking!

For many years the Friends of Roundhay Park have remarked on the poor condition of the Canal Shelter at the end of Canal Gardens in front of Tropical World, both in terms of its bland design and poor physical condition. Several attempts were made to tidy it up, but it soon became obvious that a more radical approach was needed. FoRP decided to grab the bull by the horns and sort it out. A small Working Group, consisting of David Binns, Tom Cooper and John Ferguson, investigated its history and found a photograph from 1880 in the Leodis Archive showing a Victorian gentleman in a bowler hat, carrying a tripod camera standing by the Canal. It is just possible to make out a three-arch frontage. The next available image (probably 1970s) shows a similar arched frontage but is crude in design and construction. The Shelter is an important element in Canal Gardens and is well used by those seeking quiet contemplation, a picnic out of the rain or even post-wedding photographs.

In late 2018, approval was granted for a project costing £15k, planning permission was received in September 2019, the work began in 2020 and was completed just before lockdown. It was paid for entirely by FORP. The new design leans heavily on the 1880s three-arch concept. More detail has been incorporated to frame the arches, make the supporting posts visually stronger and create a more three-dimensional frontage. A more vibrant colour was introduced to accentuate the various elements and to give a visual focus at the end of the Canal. FoRP are proud of their achievement and would like to thank the Park Management for its support and assistance and also the Contractors (Wetheralds of Harrogate) who completed the project on time and on budget. Heritage Walking Trail for Chapel Allerton Christine Osborne, of the Chapel Allerton Neighbourhood Planning Group, has produced a brilliant Heritage Walking Trail covering buildings of historic interest in the Chapel Allerton area. It's a great way to add interest to a local walk. It takes 2-3 hours to complete the whole trail, depending on how long you spend at each building, but you can dive in and out as you wish - you don't have to do it all at the same time, although it's possible if you want to spend the time. Horsforth Food Hub Feeds over 150 People a Week In March, BBC Look North filmed at Horsforth Community Café, looking at the café’s response to the looming crisis. It has been running for four years at St Margaret’s Parish Centre, with volunteers turning surplus food into meals for the whole community. The café is pay-as-you-feel, with proceeds being distributed to good causes.

As a result of the pandemic, of course, the café had to close. But, the project continued to be offered surplus food and, as restaurants closed, it also received additional donations. So, it became Horsforth Food Hub, running a pay-as-you-feel shop on Mondays 10am -12 noon at St Margaret's Parish Centre for anyone struggling to afford food. Food parcels were delivered to over 25 households who are isolating and with no other way to access food.

Horsforth Food Hub is part of Horsforth Community Aid Project (HCAP) which was established by a group of community leaders to care for the people of Horsforth during the pandemic. A ‘Greenway’ in Adel A few years ago, I consulted with local residents about making the rural part of Holt Lane in Adel into a ‘Greenway’ for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as access for Holt Lane residents. This never went ahead due to the number of objections. However, during the lockdown, residents have commented positively on using the lane for walking and access to other local footpaths and I have received a number of requests for either a lower speed limit or reconsideration of a ‘Greenway’.

It is so, so, good to be back! I hope this latest and very welcome North Leeds Life finds you in good health. I know from the emails I’ve received that you’ve missed your monthly NLL read. When I wrote my last column back in March, I don’t think any of us could have predicted quite how the world was about to change for all of us. Lockdowns, social isolation, toilet roll shortages, furlough, limits on exercise, Zoom, clapping for carers, social distancing, closed schools and home schooling – the concepts and experiences we’ve had to get our heads around are dizzying. I wrote then about the launch of the Alwoodley Ward Facebook Group and

Traffic Engineering had previously suggested that Holt Lane could be closed between the Golf Club and Holt Farm, creating a ‘Greenway’ that would link to local public rights of way. This would also dramatically reduce traffic cutting through between Holt Road and Cookridge Lane, as the only vehicles would be those needing access to property. The lockdown, and focus on improving walking and cycling, may have shifted local opinion. Traffic Engineering would still support this measure and it will be reconsidered in Transport Policy. If there is still local opposition, there may be an opportunity to undertake a temporary scheme, monitor the impact, and demonstrate that it is not detrimental to local accessibility.

If Holt Lane remains as a through route, the speed limit could also be reassessed. The current 40mph speed limit cannot be reduced to 30mph or below without introducing traffic calming features. However, Holt Lane has no street lighting and calming features such as speed cushions on roads without street lighting are prohibited and introducing this would incur significant expenditure which would be better focussed on locations with higher injury collision rates.

What has amazed and inspired me throughout this whole affair, is the amount of good will and warmth I have seen displayed within our community. The huge number of people helping each other out, doing shopping, having a chat, giving things away that will be helpful to another family, the building of the Alwoodley Adder at the Village Green. The outpouring of kindness has been awe-inspiring. There has been occasional fractiousness, but that is entirely understandable in these circumstances. But it has though been dwarfed by the community cohesion – I truly hope this will be a long-lasting side effect of this pandemic.

We are looking at improving cycle and pedestrian routes and greening our area. Cllrs Al Garthwaite, Jonathan Pryor & Neil Walshaw Headingley The impact of Covid-19 on our communities has been immense. We mourn those we have lost, continue to fight the virus, and are full of gratitude for those working on the front lines. Locally, we are thankful for Hyde Park Source, Rainbow Junktion, our churches and mosques, OWLS, and many other groups, who have been keeping people safe and fed. Here are a few of the issues that have been brought to our attention: Rough Sleepers – Leeds City Council was quick to respond by placing 219 people in hotels across the city, including two for women only. They were given a room, three good meals a day, and intensive support – including offers of housing and help with mental health, medical and other needs. We aim to avoid people returning to the streets. A small number do fear being inside, preferring to sleep out, even when they have a home to go to. Enforcement can prevent this where possible, as it’s a risk to health and safety. If you see someone who needs help or is out begging, please contact our Street Outreach Team on 0113 245 9445. Domestic Violence – Domestic violence has doubled since lockdown. For help and support, including refuge, contact Leeds Domestic Violence Services www.ldvs. uk; 24 hour helpline 0113 246 0401, or in emergency, the police, pressing 5 after 999 to get straight through.

Air Pollution – With road traffic being reduced by 60%, and the reduction in flights, there has been a huge drop in air pollution, especially particulates and nitrous oxide. We are looking at improving cycle and pedestrian routes and greening our area. More cycle parking is being provided in the city centre and areas of high employment, and we are seeing how we can make public transport as safe and accessible as possible. As Councillors, we want an ongoing public conversation about what is and isn’t working, so please do get in touch and let us know of your experiences. Education & Schools – Our teachers have done an incredible job keeping schools open for vulnerable children and children of key workers throughout the Covid-19 crisis. Schools are now beginning to gradually expand numbers and we are working closely with them to ensure that risk assessments are thorough and to keep everyone as safe as possible. Every school is different regarding numbers of children, staff, layouts etc. so they will be expanding their intakes at different rates. Please be patient. Pinch out the growing tip of your tomato plants once they have five branches of baby fruits developing and remove any side shoots that appear where the leaves meet the stem to ensure your tomatoes reach their full size.

One of the things I have missed the most this spring is the opportunity to get out and see other gardens in search of new ideas and, of course, new plants to buy. In June, many public gardens announced that they will be opening again, and many are now welcoming visitors. I advise checking in advance of any visits as many (including Harlow Carr Gardens, Beningbrough Hall, Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal, Newby Hall and Ripley Castle), are open, but visits are at fixed times and must be booked in advance. So go the lyrics to 'I Saw a Tiger', drawled by country-singing, mullet-crowned, guntoting, gay polygamist zookeeper Joe Exotic – subject of a hit crime docuseries from Netflix. Filmed over five years, 'Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness' is the sensational story of a network of exotic animal breeders and their fight against animal rights activists. Today, more big cats exist in American captivity than roam free in the wild. Between Oklahoma City and Dallas Fort Worth is GW Exotic Zoo, apparently one of the largest reserves of its kind. It was founded by ex-cop and impresario Joe Maldonado-Passage – stage name Joe Exotic. A cross between Yosemite Sam, Siegfried & Roy and Liberace, Joe Exotic is a fierce defender of his business, and for the past decade has been at war with his arch nemesis, activist Carole Baskin. The series opens with the Tiger King himself behind bars, serving a 22-year prison sentence for plotting to have Baskin capped by one of his staff. The complex, wild and sordid sequence of events that leads up to Exotic’s ultimate conviction is rapidly absorbing, and makes for compulsive viewing.

Yet it’s a guilt-ridden experience from the off. That’s because 'Tiger King' drags you right down into the dirt. Prepare yourself for the seedy underworld of exotic animal trade and petting, where cubs are appropriated by the super-rich and hyper idiotic. The intentions of the series soon stray from raising awareness of animal welfare, to focusing on the unhappy lives of the abusers and breeders. Directors Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin present many of the misfits in this saga in the most unflattering light, too. An alleged hitman is interviewed in his bathtub; a groundsman appears high on his bed before whiting out; a maimed zookeeper is filmed against a dumpster of garbage, and one of Joe's

ex-husbands gives testimony barechested, heavily inked and toothless in a rocking chair. In an attempt to sate the ever-growing appetite for poverty porn, 'Tiger King' further iterates the miserable existence of zoo staff living on $1.50-a-hour wages in rat-infested trailers, climaxing in a drug-induced human tragedy captured live on camera. Then there’s the sniggering study of Joe Exotic’s polygamous marriage to two straight, if not stoned, young men, bracketed by interludes of his music videos and presidential campaigns. Sure, it provides plenty of nervous titters, but when you consider such punching down is pushing fat cat producers’ profits, it gives you a rather uneasy feeling. Nevertheless, shunting the ethics of documentary making to one side, this is an exceptionally well-made and addictive miniseries. Its dramatic reveals and cliff-hangers are engineered for binge watching, whilst its eyeclawing awkwardness offers a much welcome diversion from world events. There’s also no denial that Joe Exotic is a truly magnetic and larger-than-life personality.

Now the Tiger King is behind bars, possibly for life; dramatic irony for a man who thrived on the showmanship of caged animals. Yet the saga continues, with claws out for more episodes, and Netflix has responded with an afterword of expanded interviews. Nicholas Cage has also been signed up to play Exotic in an 8-part dramatisation, due next year. Meanwhile, Joe is appealing to represent himself in court. In years to come, we’ll look back at this strange period in our history. Much will be said about how people coped in isolation. “Did you see 'Tiger King'?” they’ll ask. Well, did you? Perhaps that’s reason enough to make this guilty pleasure a catfight worth catching.

Leeds NHS Hospitals Need Your Support More than Ever

Old Centralians Launch First Women’s Team

As you know, the NHS has never faced an emergency like the coronavirus pandemic. It has placed enormous pressures on both staff and services. The Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust has 18,000 dedicated staff, all working to provide the best possible care for patients and their families.

A monthly donation could help to pay for life-saving medical equipment or urgent research to help Leeds Cares respond faster when treating patients with coronavirus. It could also help to provide a much-needed comfort pack to very sick patients or exhausted staff during this time.

Leeds Cares, your local hospital charity, is inviting you to become a ‘friend’ and help make a difference by giving a monthly donation. Your contribution will help to pay for the things what the NHS can’t always fund - those extra things that have a huge impact on patients’ lives. It will directly help staff and patients at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, including Leeds Children’s Hospital and Leeds Cancer Centre.

This season, Old Centralians are launching their first women's team. The team will practice at their home ground in West Park (LS16 5AY) on Sunday mornings and will play in the West Riding County Women’s League. The Club has run men’s teams since 1925 and is one of Leeds oldest and largest football clubs. This is its first foray into the women’s game, and they need players! Players of all abilities are welcome, even if they haven't played before. Forward Leeds Film Runner Up in Worldwide Competition A short film made by Forward Leeds, the city’s alcohol and drug service, was recently voted runner-up in a worldwide competition organised by the Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination. Using the testimonies of people who had been cleared of hepatitis C to emphasise how treatment has improved in Leeds, ‘Don't Live in Doubt’ encourages people to get tested and treated. “To be recognised in a global competition is fantastic”, said Lee Wilson, Operations Director. “The film is a great way to get across that treatment for hepatitis C is now much faster, simpler and has fewer side effects. We are finding our service users are going through to fully complete the treatment and there is a 90% success rate.” The filmmakers interviewed people about their positive experiences of being treated in Leeds. The interviews were then edited, together with shots of famous Leeds landmarks.

“Prevention, testing and treatment of hepatitis C is an important part of the Leeds Drug and Alcohol Strategy”, said Cllr Rebecca Charlwood, Leeds City Council Executive Member for Health, Wellbeing and Adults. “We are really proud to have been involved with this short film, which raises awareness of how easy it is to get tested and treated in Leeds. The Don’t Live in Doubt campaign also contributes to the wider global effort to eliminate this virus.” The film was joint second in the category Political and Civil Support, alongside films from Uganda, New Zealand and South Africa. It was originally made as part of a larger 2019 campaign encouraging people to get tested and was made with support from the Leeds City Council, the Hepatitis C Trust and Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. Through social media, they interacted with pupils on a daily basis, setting quizzes, providing important information, and teaching the children British Sign Language.

Jane Browne, a children’s author from Pudsey, is hoping to raise children’s awareness of climate change through her fantasy trilogy ‘The Earth Chronicles’. Also a primary school teacher, she recently launched her first book in the trilogy, ‘Hannah and the Hollow Tree’ aimed at children in Years 5 and 6. “I hope that teachers, and parents who are currently home-schooling, will find something useful and engaging in the range of resources included in the pack”, said Jane. “These include activities and ideas to encourage children to reflect on the book’s key message about how people are damaging the planet. Other themes for them to consider are family, loyalty, and trust.”

The school, which has provision for deaf and hearing-impaired children, used its popular social media platforms to teach their pupils and families how to sign. “It was a way for us to connect and ‘speak’ to our school community”, said Amanda Hyde, Assistant Headteacher. “The nurturing support is part of what we do and who we are. We wanted our Facebook messages to be accessible to all.” The school’s work around mental health and wellbeing was judged to be a real strength in a recent Ofsted inspection. Younger Life Painting in a Pandemic Eoghan Thompson, a Year 10 pupil at Carr Manor Community School, used the lockdown period to brush up on his artistic skills. Inspired by a photograph of his aunt and a colleague at work in the NHS Waterside Hospital in Derry, Northern Ireland, he re-created it as an outstanding oil painting. The photograph shows the two women, Deirdre Rigney (Eoghan's Aunt) and Marian Ward, in their full scrubs on a COVD-19 ward. Deirdre normally works with elderly patients with dementia, but she was moved to a COVID-19 ward where the elderly patients also had the virus. “Eoghan has found real enjoyment in painting during lockdown and it has helped him through a challenging time”, said his mother.

“I knew he was artistic but this year he has grown in talent and ability beyond what I imagined.” The school is very proud of Eoghan’s efforts and has featured his work in its fortnightly newsletter. “It’s been fantastic to see the efforts of all of our pupils during this difficult and unusual time”, said a Carr Manor spokesperson. “We’ve been sent hundreds of photos showing what our pupils have been up to at home in addition to their schoolwork – from paintings to bike ramps that they’ve built! Their resilience and independence are inspiring and we’re so proud of how they’ve persevered during this difficult period.”

Martin House Opens Doors for Planned Respite Stays Children and young people with lifeshortening conditions will have more access to hospice care as Martin House opens again following the relaxation of lockdown rules. The hospice, based in Boston Spa, was forced to cancel all planned short breaks for families when the UK went into lockdown in March. While it has continued to provide emergency and end of life care, hundreds of families have been unable to make their regular planned stays for the last three months. “We know it’s been really tough for families during the lockdown”, said Dr Michael Tatterton, Deputy Director Clinical Services at Martin House. “While we’ve been keeping in touch through phone and video calls, it’s not the same as coming to the hospice. Planned short stays are a huge part of the care we offer families, and they

tell us how vital it is for them to have that break from the 24/7 care their child needs. “While the stays we’re now offering will be very different to what families are used to, we hope it will go some way to giving them the support they so desperately need.” Martin House is also offering outreach visits in people’s own homes, so it can give care and support to as many families as possible.
