07540 888 052 One of the key tenets of Freemasonry is charitable giving, along with supporting the local community, and The Lodge of Dawn in Headingley has been doing exactly that during lockdown. Alongside their regular giving, they have facilitated a grant of £3,000 for MAP, the community support service for young people at Hope House, Mabgate, home to a number of creative enterprises. MAP (Music & Arts Production) works with other creative businesses in the building, to offer young people at risk of exclusion from school, the opportunity to gain qualifications in Creative Media, Music, Art & Design, alongside Maths and English, by combining work experience with goal-directed education. The grant will support the MAP team, who are revising their programme so it can be accessed remotely by the students throughout the pandemic.

Downsizing and your New Home Choosing to downsize is often associated with a challenging life transition such as children growing up and moving on, the decision to retire, the need to free up some cash or separation from a partner.

When taking the decision to downsize it’s important to consider what you will need from your new home, the kind of lifestyle you’d like and what you will need to achieve this. For example: What amenities would you like to have close by – a supermarket, doctor’s surgery, or a park? What private outdoor space will you need – a balcony for morning coffee, or a large garden for entertaining? Do you need extra bedrooms for visiting family? If you have items of furniture to take with you, does your new home have space for them? How much personal space will you need – are you happy sharing, or do you need some space just for you?

It could also be that you fancy a lifestyle change or want to simplify your life. Whatever the reason, downsizing offers you the opportunity to save money and free up cash by selling your existing home, creating all sorts of new opportunities!

If you’re looking for advice and support on how best to downsize, help with how to start the downsizing journey or tips on what to look for in a new home, the team at Fowler and Powell can help using our experience to guide you through the process.

Get a FREE downsizing guide and a bonus blog to help you downsize stress free. Text 07471 062 834 with your name and email to get yours today. 241_North Leeds Life advert2_Full age_167mm x 240mm h_AW.indd 1

Life&Style They Lived In Leeds By Eveleigh Bradford OWEN (SAMUEL) BOWEN (1873-1967) Artist Owen Bowen bridged two centuries. Born and rooted in the late nineteenth century when he first set up as a young artist, he lived on into the 1960s, into his nineties, still painting his richly textured impressionist landscapes and glowing, colourful flower studies, bypassing modernist revolutions in art and taste. Year after year his work was selected for the Royal Academy and found a place in numerous public and private collections. Romantic, idealised, they still have charm and nostalgic appeal.

He was born in Hunslet in 1873, the fourth of George and Elizabeth Bowen’s eight children. George Bowen had come to Leeds from Cheshire around 1870 to work as cashier at a flax mill: a good position. From early days, against his father’s wishes, Owen was bent on becoming an artist. He left Leeds High School at 13, got a job at the Burmantofts Pottery, and went to night classes at the Leeds School of Art, under the charismatic teacher W. Gilbert Foster. But at 16 he was advised, he said, to give up formal study: ‘My boy, you’re an artist and we’ll ruin you!’ So off he went to show his work to the Leeds art dealer Edmund Bogg, who offered him £2 a week, plus materials, to go to Wales next day with four other young artists, paid to paint pictures for Bogg to sell in his Guildford Street gallery. It was a rich experience, sharing ideas and methods. In 1890, still only 17, Owen took the bold step to set up his own studio at 51 Cookridge Street and had the thrill of having his first picture accepted by the Royal Academy in London. He joined the influential Yorkshire Union of Artists and won prizes at their Leeds and York exhibitions – ‘singular skill in one so young’. At 19 he branched out, advertising Saturday painting classes at his studio. Dressed in silk hat and frock coat he waited anxiously; one carriage rolled up, then others, and his ‘Owen Bowen School of Painting’ was born. The 1890s proved a

golden time for him, with his classes full, many successful exhibitions, and important sales to private buyers and galleries like the Walker in Liverpool. His friendship with the eccentric Edmund Bogg led to other opportunities, professional and social. When Bogg embarked on a series of best-selling local interest books about Yorkshire, Owen provided some of the illustrations: The Old Kingdom of Elmet (1902), for instance, features his lively vignettes of Leeds. And when Bogg founded the bohemian Leeds ‘Savage Club’ in 1898, an unconventional focus for artists, writers and musicians (with a Native American theme), Owen sometimes hosted their rumbustious, smoky ‘pow-wows’ in his studio, and joined their lively summer sorties to the country. He loved the comradeship and fun. Another significant friendship was with his old tutor Gilbert Foster, who had a cottage at Runswick Bay and was the forerunner of the network of artists like Mark Senior and Laura and Harold Knight who became known as the Staithes Group. The coming of the railways in the mid-1880s had opened up these remote, picturesque coastal villages to visitors. Following in Foster’s steps, Owen rented a cottage at Robin Hood’s Bay. In

the early 1900s he regularly exhibited with the Staithes Group at their annual shows and from the 1920s with the Fylingdales group of artists, focussed on Robin Hood’s Bay – he remained a member, and later their president, for 40 years. The landscapes of this coast, with its special qualities of light and colour, were among his favourite subjects. In 1899 he married a Leeds girl, Janet Wilson. Their first home was 14 Shaw Lane, Headingley, but around 1905 they moved to a larger house, ‘Evenholm’, in rural East Keswick. It remained their home, initially with their three children, for the rest of their lives. Here Owen advertised his ‘Al Fresco School of Painting’, and later opened a studio in Collingham. His landscape painting took him around the country to Cornwall, Scotland, Wales, and abroad to Holland and Austria, until a serious illness in the mid-1920s kept him housebound for many months. He turned then to still-life studies of flowers and Yorkshire scenes closer to home.

He was a respected figure in the art world: from 1904 – 1967 an elected member of the Royal Cambrian Academy (ARCA) at Conwy, and its president 1946-54; an elected member too of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (ROI). Modest, humorous, convivial, he was a popular figure. His wife died in 1933, but he lived on to be 94, still painting and exhibiting, a ‘grand old man’ of Yorkshire painting. He’s slipped below the horizon now, his prolific paintings fetching modest sums, but had a life worth remembering. [You can see some of his pictures on www.artuk.org.]

United Are Back!

We’ve all done it. You land at a far-flung airport, jump into a taxi and the driver asks you where you’re from. Depending on the age of the taxi driver, the answer to ‘Leeds’ is always…….. ‘Ah Beeely Bremner’ or more recently ‘Alan Smeeeeth, Mark Vidoookaaaa’. A reflection of our years of glory in Europe. During our 16 years out of the topflight, not one single taxi driver has ever uttered the words ‘Ah, Scott Wooton or Steve Morrison’. A successful football club reverberates across not just Europe but across the whole world. A couple of years ago, I met a doorman at a restaurant in Thailand who even knew the Leeds salute! And with Leeds United finally back dining at the top table of English football, the positive effect on the city will soon swing into action, and taxi drivers across the world will know of Cooper, Bamford and Ayling. As a long-suffering supporter of the club the heady mix of relief, ecstasy, tears and screams of late July 2020 will live with me for many, many years. Pablo’s last-minute winner at Swansea, the Huddersfield goal against West Brom, the Brentford collapse and the guard of honour at Derby. Intense emotions all compounded into less than a week. After

such a long painful time the end came so quickly. I’ve experienced cup final victories, European nights at home and abroad, promotions, relegations, and more heartbreak and disappointment than any football supporter should do. And the last 16 of those years have almost all been pain and disappointment, But Leeds United’s promotion has simply washed away 16 years of hurt, just like that. Finally, as the song goes ‘we have a team we can be proud of’. And that pride in our team isn’t just felt by the supporters. The whole city has swelled with pride for what they have done. You don’t have to be a fan to see the positive effect it has already and will have on the place. It has been estimated that each game will bring around £3m into the city, covering travel, leisure, hotels, bars, restaurants, retail and other areas. That is a huge ‘tourist’ boost. But it goes further than that. Simple ‘brand awareness’ of Leeds across the world will bring commercial benefits from the ripple effect.

Quoted in the YEP, Mark Goldstone head of business representation and policy at West and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “The Leeds United brand carries such weight across the country with promotion to the Premiership bringing both direct and indirect economic benefit to the city, both on match days and beyond. We have seen the impact major events have on the city, from the Tour de France Grand Depart through to the MOBOs; having Premiership Football back in the city once again will make a significant contribution and raise Leeds’s profile even further.” Only in the next few years will we realise the difference that having a Premiership club will have on the city, but all the signs look very positive. New Extra Care Scheme in Cookridge Lady Ida Lodge, a new Extra Care scheme, forms part of a Grade II listed building originally built in 1889 as Ida Convalescent Hospital, an addition to the Cookridge Hospital. Set for completion by the end of this year, the first residents are expected to move in in January 2021. The development will provide much needed accommodation for local people over the age of 55 and will offer 64 one and two bedroom apartments for affordable rent and shared ownership. Developed in partnership with Leeds City Council, Lady Ida Lodge has been designed to promote independent living in a community setting, with a care

team on-site 24/7 to deliver planned care packages if needed. It will offer a range of facilities including an activity room, communal lounge and gardens. An on-site hair salon and café/bistro will also be open to the public, subject to government guidelines and social distancing rules when the scheme opens. “At Housing 21, we are passionate about the design of our developments and always strive to bring our residents beautiful and unique places to live”, said Darren Wilson, Housing 21 Extra Care Manager. “It has been our pleasure to be involved in restoring one of Cookridge’s landmarks and bringing new life to the ‘Ida Convalescent Hospital’ building.

Online Art Course Shares the Power of Trees as Teachers Leeds-based educator and artist, Eleanor Snare, used the lockdown to develop a unique, self-leadership course combining audio art lessons with time spent in nature. root&branch is a 12-week audio course delivered via email which highlights the power of trees as teachers when it comes to caring, thoughtful and eco-aware leadership. Combining downloadable audio lessons with art and journal prompts, plus a library of 60+ curated resources, root&branch seeks to develop individual self-leadership skills in creative people who think differently. “I developed this course over lockdown as I took daily walks in our local woods”, said Eleanor. “I realised that the trees I was seeing every day could teach us a lot about the qualities we need for self-leadership – from trusting that we have everything we need within us, to resilience and accepting the change that’s happening around us.” It’s well documented that time spent in nature has a beneficial effect on human beings, from lowering the levels of stress to alleviating symptoms of mild depression and anxiety. Add to that the power of art to restore wellbeing and the result is a powerful, positive impact on how we feel, think and create. Participants will receive 12 lessons via email, each containing a downloadable audio lesson to listen to while spending time in nature, plus downloadable art and journaling prompts alongside a comprehensive set of curated multimedia resources.

Pictured: Eleanor Snare

You will also be invited to seasonal live lessons, where Eleanor will share knowledge on what trees in spring, summer, autumn or winter can teach us about selfleadership. Each quarter, she will hold a root&branchinspired art chronicle: a free three-day art-making challenge to get people out into nature, making art and documenting the world around them. Plus, 5% of the post-tax income from root&branch will be donated to two charities: The Woodland Trust, and Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods, who look after the woods that inspired root&branch. Eleanor Snare is a Senior Lecturer at Leeds Arts University and a business owner of five years; she previously worked at Leeds University and in marketing communications. Leeds Arts Uni Offers Courses in Creature Design & Worldbuilding This September at Leeds Arts University sees a significant expansion of the postgraduate offer with the launch of the UK’s first master’s degrees dedicated to Creature Design and Worldbuilding, along with a further four in Animation, Digital Fashion, Illustration and Graphic Novel. Whether you dream of creating fantastical characters, working out what dinosaurs looked like or want to model the direction of evolution itself, Leeds Arts University is the place to start. MA Creature Design opens career opportunities in the film, games and comic industries, as well as work supporting scientific research, such as visualising prehistoric life or paleo reconstruction, evolution and life on other planets, known as speculative biology. MA Worldbuilding invites students to create richly detailed cultural, historical

and futuristic worlds for careers in the entertainment industry, production and research. The BA (Hons) Comic and Concept Art degree means students could have a clear pathway through to the new MAs. Across the University there is an emphasis on access to industry. This is highlighted by its on-going partnership with Thought Bubble Festival, Europe’s biggest celebration of comics, illustration and animation, which takes place in the region. The annual event places the University’s students at the centre of the comic and animation industry with opportunities to exhibit and meet sector professionals. Last year this included an event co-hosted by the University with writer, screenwriter and editor Brian Azzarello, known for his crime series 100 Bullets; writing for DC Comics/Vertigo

Life&Style Sharon Watson Takes the Baton as CEO & Principal of NSCD Sharon Watson has officially stepped into her new role as Chief Executive & Principal of Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD). She began her tenure while the pandemic in the UK was at its peak. Despite the challenges, staff quickly adapted, taking teaching provision online, and coordinating virtual projects which have seen final year degree students graduate with flying colours (63% achieving a first, 37% achieving a 2:1). Formerly the longest-standing Artistic Director of Phoenix Dance Theatre, Sharon is the fourth Principal in NSCD's 35-year history, following Janet Smith MBE, Gurmit Hukam and founding Principal Nadine Senior MBE. “To be guiding the School through this next chapter is a pleasure and an honour, if a little different to what I thought it would be!” she said. “Despite the challenges, we remain focused on ensuring the continuation of studies in the best way possible, building on the exemplary work

which already exists. NSCD students are renowned worldwide. My relationship with the school has spanned 35 years and to continue the legacy of Nadine Senior is incredibly rewarding." Sharon was one of Nadine Senior’s pupils at Harehills Middle School before studying at London Contemporary Dance School. She was one of the first female dancers to join Phoenix Dance Theatre, and in 1996 she attended Northern School of Contemporary Dance to complete her Bachelor of Performing Arts (Dance) degree. NSCD is currently preparing to welcome new and returning students for the Autumn term with a 50:50 blend of online/studio learning, reduced class sizes and strict social bubbles. Northern Ballet & American Ballet Theatre Create Films Inspired by Students’ Choreography As part of the Burberry Inspire programme, that pairs schools with arts organisations in Yorkshire and New York, Northern Ballet recently worked with American Ballet Theatre to create four new films featuring professional dancers performing choreography by students from West Yorkshire and New York City. Filmed at various locations, including The Hepworth Wakefield, Salts Mill and Times Square, the final films were overseen by Kenneth Tindall, Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director of Digital and Choreographer in Residence. Students from Castleford and Queens inspired the choreography in a first for both ballet companies. “This wonderful concept is close to my heart”, said Kenneth. “It was a project like this that sparked the imagination of a young working-class kid, in an innercity school in London who otherwise would never have discovered the world of ballet. It’s an honour to have come full circle and be in the position I am in now, utilising my skills and creativity to engage and inspire the next generation

as I was inspired all those years ago.” The films mark the first collaboration between Northern Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, working together virtually to bring students’ ideas to life. “We’re pleased to build upon the success of the Burberry Inspire program and bring virtual learning in dance and design to a wide audience of middle school students in NYC and beyond”, said Dennis Walters, Associate Director of Education and Training at American Ballet Theatre. “The opportunity to collaborate, share ideas and develop curriculum with the talented artists and educators of Northern Ballet has been a very special experience.” The Burberry Foundation first launched Burberry Inspire in

Yorkshire in 2018, aiming to give young people a varied experience of arts and culture whilst studying the impact of this on their development. During the first year, more than 4,000 young people benefitted from their experience, which ranged from dance and theatre to filmmaking and sculpture, with four Yorkshire arts organisations: Northern Ballet, The Hepworth Wakefield, Leeds Playhouse, and Leeds Young Film. Earlier this year, the Burberry Foundation expanded the programme internationally, launching in New York City with American Ballet Theatre, Reel Works and Studio in a School. In response to the pandemic, organisations from Yorkshire and New York came together to find ways to inspire and support students in the midst of the pandemic virtually. The films can be seen https:// northernballet.com/news-burberryinspire

CommunityNews Transforming the Streets of Chapel Allerton CA Spaces, the not-for-profit community group in Chapel Allerton, has been busy brightening up the streets and making Chapel Allerton an even more inviting place to live and work. It has a committee of seven and strong support from volunteers in the community. With help from a range of creatives, from experienced street artists to newly graduated art students, over 20 plain metal roadside boxes containing broadband wire connections have been completely transformed with captivating designs. Several have been paid for by the community via crowd funding, others through donations from local businesses and organisations, and some by residents raising funds for their own streets. “Some of the boxes had been sprayed with graffiti and were quite unsightly”, said Committee Member Angie Talbot. “We commissioned a range of artists to create designs for some of them and hope the different styles appeal to the diverse sections of our community. It’s great to now see individual streets

clubbing together for their media boxes to be painted. They certainly brighten up the area!” CA Spaces raised just over £800 through crowd funding. With financial support from local businesses and organisations, the group has also successfully secured a few small grants and received support from Leeds City Council. It has also planted 600 trees (donated by Leeds City Council) in the park and on small pockets of land around Chapel Allerton. “We were delighted when the Council donated so many trees but daunted by the task of getting them all planted!” said Helen Hobson. “We were amazed, relieved and grateful that so many volunteers came forward to help. The challenge now is the endless watering, which is needed during the dry spells as the young saplings take hold but so far most of the trees are thriving. It will be great to see them grow over the years.” CA Spaces also built a children’s play area called ‘Mud Kitchen’ on a small piece of waste land. It now includes a number of features to support wildlife too. A Living Food Bank has been developed in the park and residents are invited to help themselves to the vegetables that are grown. The group also held a seed exchange day recently giving people the chance to swap fruit and vegetable seeds with fellow gardeners. “So much has been achieved in the last year, particularly during lockdown”, said Sophie Dent. “Now we’re looking at other ways in which to make Chapel Allerton a greener and even nicer place to live, and we’d love to receive more ideas from people in the area.” CA Spaces can be contacted via lovecaspaces@ gmail.com or on social media as ca_spaces

October is Make a Will Month Making a Will is easy and next month you can have yours written by a professional solicitor through St Gemma’s Make a Will Month.

Throughout October, St Gemma’s Hospice works with solicitors across Leeds, who have all kindly agreed to waive their fees and donate their time for writing your Will. A donation to St Gemma’s is usually required, however this year the donation is optional. It has been a difficult year for many people, and the hospice doesn’t want anyone to miss out on being able to complete such an important piece of life admin, at such an uncertain time. As life changes around you, this is an ideal time to consider making your Will – it is the only way to make sure your money, property, possessions and investments go to the people and causes that you care about.

The solicitors taking part are also offering telephone and video call appointments, as it may be difficult for people to attend face-to-face appointments. For more information on St Gemma’s Make a Will Month, please visit www. st-gemma.co.uk/makeawillmonth or call 0113 306 9170.

Become a Foster Carer and Change a Child’s Life Could you provide children who aren’t able to live with their birth families with a safe and loving family home on a temporary basis? Since Covid-19 the number of children’s care proceedings across the UK have been rising, as families struggle to cope with a range of issues. This means that the number of children and young people entering foster care is expected to increase. Before Covid-19 Leeds City Council had a shortage of foster carers able to look after children aged 11 and over, large sibling groups and children with disabilities (both developmental & physical). There is a high demand for families who can offer homes to these young people and Foster4Leeds would welcome more applications. They are currently taking registrations of interest and have an excellent system in place to take people through the recruitment process. By fostering for Leeds City Council, new carers would join one of the country’s largest, well-established fostering networks with direct support from social workers and specialist staff.

Leeds needs foster carers from all walks of life – single, married, divorced, employed, unemployed, with or without children of their own. People from diverse backgrounds and all ethnic origins are needed to help children benefit from living with families who share their own culture, language and religion. A wide range of fostering types are required – including short term support for young children and longer, planned permanent support, as well as respite foster care, and specialist care for disabled children. Leeds City Council provides locally based offices, support groups, training and regular foster friendly events. For more information, call 0113 378 3538 or visit www.leeds.gov.uk/foster4leeds

Lock Up Your Sheds and Garages West Yorkshire Police are encouraging everyone to keep their sheds and garages securely locked, following a recent increase in burglaries where bikes and power tools have been stolen. • Keep your outbuildings secure – good quality locks can greatly reduce your chances of being burgled. • Place a shed door facing your house and not too close to a perimeter wall or gate • Keep particularly valuable items in a strong lockable box or cage. • Wrap a strong chain around and through the handles of garden tools, lawn mowers, bicycles etc and secure it to the wall using a padlock or ground anchor fixed to the base of the shed. • Integrate your shed or garage into your home alarm system. • Buy padlocks and chains that are Sold Secure tested or Secured by Design (SBD) approved.

CommunityNews Community children making their way to school. Blocking driveways, parking on pavements, stopping on yellow lines and causing an obstruction by parking inconsiderately are all things that residents regularly contact me about.

Cllr Dan Cohen Alwoodley

As the strangest of summers draws to a close, thoughts turn to what will be a different return to school this September. Not since March, have the streets around our schools faced all our children returning at the same time and the ensuing traffic that it will involve. This is likely to be aggravated by the need to stagger both start and finish times to allow parents and children to socially distance. Each year I ask both parents and residents to please ensure that you park not only legally but also considerately. There is a small minority who park without any consideration either for local residents or the

I would never urge taking the law into your own hands, but very politely pointing out that someone’s parking is dangerous can have the greatest impact on this behaviour. Improving poor parking outside schools improves neighbourhood relations and makes significant improvements for the safety of our young people, whether they are walking or cycling. I also ask for patience from residents who have got used to significantly more peace and quiet since the end of March. There is little doubt that schools reopening is going to be a shock to the system. The vast majority of parents and carers are going about their business, parking both legally and with consideration for residents and it is vital that this is recognised too.

Hopefully, the lockdown messages of being kind and considerate will have rubbed off on all of us and September’s return to school will be an oasis of calm. As ward members we are keen to give residents who want to see us in the flesh the ability to do so – ensuring that we fully respect social distancing. So, we are looking to restart our street surgeries where we write to residents in an area in the ward to advise that all three of us will visit the area on a specific date and call on those who display the poster sent with the letter. If you would like your street to be one of these, please let me know and we will add you to our list. Of course, if you ever need Neil, Peter or me, do remember that for any and all local issues, we are here to help, don’t hesitate to get on touch if there is anything we might be able to assist you with. Meanwood Radio Keeps the Music Playing! James Heselwood started Meanwood Radio in 2018. Initially he uploaded new shows every week on Facebook and Mixcloud, featuring music from his extensive vinyl collection. The idea was to provide a multi-genre (Reggae, Funk, Soul, Jazz, Blues, House, Disco, African and Brazilian music and more), non-talking show that always provided quality music. Then other local DJs started to get in touch to either visit James’ studio in his house, cut a show, or send in their mixes via the internet. Today there is a small team that does regular shows and new guests are regularly accepted. Recently someone got in touch to make a talk show discussing local art and culture, which they are really excited about! Meanwood Radio also usually does a monthly show at local taproom Terminus, as well as putting on shows in venues

across Leeds such as Wharf Chambers. Unfortunately, the pandemic has brought these live events to a halt so they have moved online. They recently organised a special online streaming event featuring four DJs from Meanwood and one from Nairobi, Kenya. It was a fantastic event and was aired as part of the Meanwood Festival and was featured in the Yorkshire Evening Post. They have now started to do socially distanced events where it is safe to do so, recently playing a nine-hour vinyl set outdoors at Left Bank Leeds – a brilliant day of food, drinks and music! They hope to do another one of these soon. Meanwood Radio now has a SoundCloud account where new music goes up every week.

Garden Round Up With Tracy Foster

There are still many things to enjoy, and plenty of jobs to do in the garden this month. Here are a few suggestions. Lawn Care A fresh, cool, healthy lawn can make your garden feel like an oasis in the heat of summer, and that living carpet of green really makes your plants and flowers stand out. To keep yours in tip top condition it’s time to reward it with a little late season TLC.

Push a garden fork into the lawn as deep as you can and gently

Begin by getting rid of moss and dead material by scarifying it (vigorously rake it over with a spring tined rake or a scarifying machine), then improve drainage in areas where the ground has become compacted by aerating. There are special tools for this, but you can do it by pushing a garden fork into the lawn as deep as you can and gently rocking it to enlarge the holes a little. Repeat every 10cm or so over the surface of the lawn, then brush in a top dressing (a blend of sand and loam that can be bought ready prepared or mixed at home).

rocking it to enlarge the holes a little

Finally apply an autumn lawn fertiliser which is high in phosphates and potash and will help strong roots to develop.

Wilder Ways

Many plants such as

Perhaps you would prefer to let a part or all of the lawn grow a little longer and encourage the growth of some wild flowers? A good way to start is to cut it very short, until it is almost bare in places, then rake it and sow the seed of Yellow Rattle which weakens grass and gives other wildflowers a chance to grow.

courgettes and runner beans will continue to produce as long as there is warmth and water

On the Veg Patch Many plants such as courgettes and runner beans will continue to produce as long as there is warmth and water, and you are still picking them. If the weather is poor and tomatoes are stubbornly refusing to ripen, cut off the trusses and bring them indoors where they should ripen on a warm windowsill. Flowers from Seed Hardy annuals can be sown directly into a weed free patch of soil, where they can become established so that they will have a head start next year. Good ones to try include Calendula, Centaurea, Cerinthe, Lunaria, Papaver somniferum and Papaver Rhoeas, but make sure you sow them in rows so that you can easily identify and pull out the weeds.

The Spoonbill is an unusual and very recognisable large wading bird found mainly in wetlands and water bodies. It is smaller than a Heron with mostly white plumage, long black legs, and a long distinctive spoon-shaped bill with a yellow tip. In Spring and Summer, the adult bird has a yellow breast band and a shaggy crest on its head. The shape of its bill is an adaptation for its method of feeding, which is to wade through the water, sweeping its bill from side to side. Sensors in the bill are attuned to the tiniest vibrations to detect the larvae of insects such as water beetles, dragonflies and caddisflies, as well as worms, tadpoles and small fish. It often feeds at night and roosts during the day, which can make them difficult to identify, if their bills are tucked under their wings. Spoonbills usually breed in colonies, with the nests being built close together on the ground and consisting of not much more than a large pile of reeds, twigs and grasses. Members of a colony will often band together to repel intruders and all the eggs are usually laid at about the same time. In the UK, Spoonbills are rare as a breeding

Ramblings of a Rock & Roll Nobody

“From an early age, I always thought that I could and should have been a rock and roll star!” said Simon Aston. “If only my view of my musical talent had been a reality and I had had any musical ability at all.” He never became a Rock God. Instead, he immersed himself in music for 60 odd years and then decided to write a book that takes a light-hearted look at his life and the music that played such an important part in it. From the early introduction to the pop world and on to his idolisation of Bruce Springsteen, the book tells of his adventures following bands from a variety of genres, including rock, country, folk, punk, heavy metal, progressive rock and more. It highlights the songs, albums, singers, bands and concerts that were such a huge part in his life and

includes his only brush with rock stardom – playing drums in the sadly underrated band Monument Valley, the nearest he got to realising his rock and roll dream. The book will surely remind many readers of songs and singers they grew up with. Simon also wants to inspire people to search out types of music or artists mentioned in the book who they may not have heard of in the hope that they will enjoy them as much as he did. Ramblings of a Rock & Roll Nobody is available in paperback or e-book via Amazon.

Seven Live Nails Streaming During Lockdown Seven Live, the monthly music event at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton, has been running for over five years and provides a platform for local, national and international performers. When lockdown arrived, the organisers were very aware that many professional and semi-professional artists would struggle for income and immediately set about learning how to live-stream events, inviting many respected musician friends to play for donations. Seven Live Online has become a successful weekly event, and the organisers have been thrilled by the generosity of supporters.

A number of semi-professional musicians nominated charities to receive their donations and Seven Live Online raised hundreds of pounds for some very worthy causes, including St. Gemma’s Hospice, Bradford Women’s Refuge, Age UK, PAFRAS and The Music Venue Trust. Thanks are due to Pete Ivatts, Nick Hall, Sabrina Piggott, Little Mistakes, Alex Chadha, The Bronze and Dariush Kanaani. Musician friends from far and wide have been featured, including J.Eoin who streamed from his home in Limerick, Curtis Eller from North Carolina and Geoff Union from Colorado – all of whom have performed at Seven Live.

And they are looking forward to some excellent music from Henry Parker (UK), Ragged Union Bluegrass Band (Colorado) and Susan Herndon from Oklahoma. Thanks go to everyone who has performed – Nick Hall, Pete Ivatts, Scott Wainwright, Paul ‘silky’ White, Little Mistakes, Edwina Hayes, Fuzzie Jones, Geoff Union, Alex Chadha, Curtis Eller, Dariush Kanaani, Sabrina Piggott, and J.Eoin All livestreams are accessed via www.facebook.com/sevenlive

Fulneck School Welcomes New Head of Juniors Fulneck School recently welcomed Michelle Blanchard as the new Head of Fulneck Junior School. Responsible for all learners aged three to 11, Michelle brings with her a wealth of educational and management experience. Educated at Stamford High School, Michelle gained her first degree from Leeds Trinity University in Primary Education and achieved her Master’s degree in Teaching and Professional Enquiry from Leeds University and the National Professional Qualification for Headship. She began her career at Keighley St Andrew’s C of E Primary in 2005, becoming Deputy Head in 2010. In 2012, Michelle became Head of the Dixons MAT Music Primary in Bradford, setting up the school from scratch as a free school and taking it from no pupils to its current roll of 420 children. She leaves her post as the Executive Principal of the five Dixons MAT primary schools across Bradford and Leeds to join Fulneck. Michelle is currently contracted by the Government as one of its six behaviour advisers, to help drive improvements in culture and behaviour in

schools across the country. A specialist in primary curriculum design, she co-authored a chapter on the importance of a high quality music curriculum and the richness this brings to a child’s education in a recent book. “Michelle shares in our vision of making Fulneck School the leading small independent school in the country over the next decade and has the knowledge, skills and drive to make sure that happens”, said Principal Paul Taylor. “She also shares the core values of ‘Work Hard, Be Kind, Be Useful’. We can’t wait to see her make a positive difference to our Junior School.”

More Year 7s and a New Sixth Form Centre Allerton Grange is a thriving, all ability, multicultural school with 1,550 students, aged 11-18. In February, Ofsted visited the school and rated it ‘Good’ in all areas and ‘Good’ for overall effectiveness. Now, both students and staff are looking forward to continuing their journey towards ‘Outstanding’, with their new Year 7 cohort , which has just joined the school community. This year the Year 7 intake has been increased to 300 and there are waiting lists in every year group. Allerton Grange combines the benefits of a large school, with many opportunities to study a wide range of subjects, in a friendly environment that is socially and culturally diverse. The expertise of the student care team ensures that each student is cared for as an individual. All staff work tirelessly to create an environment where students are safe, secure and happy.

In addition, a £4.8 million redevelopment project has begun in the school grounds, that will include redevelopment of the main building and the remodelling and refurbishment of the former CLC building to create a Sixth Form Centre. “We are looking forward to welcoming the new, larger, Year 7 cohort to Allerton Grange”, said Headteacher Mr Roper. “It is an exciting time for the school as we continue to work towards providing an outstanding education to students from the local community.”

A school full of laughter, kindness, achievement and success.

Set Them on the Right Path – the Moorlands Way The beginning of a child’s educational journey is an important time and should ensure they approach their school years with enthusiasm, joy and a love of learning …. set them on the right path at Moorlands School. Step into the Nursery and you will be greeted by engaged, happy children, making the most of the well-equipped, bright and spacious facilities, guided by qualified and experienced staff. A special aspect of the Nursery at Moorlands is that it is very much part of the main school. The children enjoy activities with ‘Buddies’ from the older years and are individually known throughout the school. Early Years pupils are offered a wide range of opportunities, just like their older peers – exploring the outdoors in ‘Forest School’; swimming in the onsite pool; music, drama and French sessions - all wrapped up in quality pastoral care.

Moorlands prides itself on offering a truly rounded education, with the focus on developing the whole child. As well as opportunities in sport, music and drama, Moorlanders participate in educational and fun activities about mental health, have their own Eco-Committee and Student Voice, and participate in charity fundraising events throughout the year. The school’s ethos is very family-focused and staff are keen to maintain links with parents, understanding the pressures that today’s families face. From Reception, pupils are offered wrap-around care and clubs from 7.30am - 6pm, at no extra cost. During the holidays, there’s Camp Xplode! It is no wonder that so many parents are choosing the Moorlands Way. For further information, visit www.moorlands-school. co.uk

Younger Life Helping Parents Talk to Children About Abuse

The NSPCC has relaunched its ‘Talk PANTS’ campaign to help parents of children aged four - eight to have a simple conversation to help keep them safe from sexual abuse.

PANTS provides a simple but valuable rule, highlighting that their bodies belong to them; they have the right to say NO; and that they should tell an adult they trust if they’re worried or upset about something. The campaign reinforces key lessons about abuse that will be compulsory for all primary schools in England, as part of Relationships Education. A Freedom of Information request to police forces in 2018/19 showed that there were at least 7,618 recorded sexual offences against children in this age group. Police forces across England, Wales and Northern Ireland deal with thousands of sexual offences against young children every year. To help children to recognise what abuse is and how they can speak up, the NSPCC’s PANTS campaign gives

adults advice on how to talk to them in an age appropriate way without using any scary words or even mentioning sex. All primary school pupils will be expected to leave school with an understanding of the differences between appropriate and inappropriate contact, as well as how they can recognise and report concerns or abuse. The NSPCC has already helped to make over 950,000 children safer through their Talk PANTS campaign and is encouraging all parents to start the conversation however uncomfortable it may be at first. To make the Talk PANTS conversation even easier, the NSPCC is crowdfunding to create a book starring their friendly dinosaur Pantosaurus. It will be a fun, visual way to help children learn vital messages. Parents and professionals can find out how to Talk PANTS here.

Junior Frood Shortlisted for National Diversity Award

Junior Frood has been shortlisted in the Positive Role Model category for a National Diversity Award. Now aged 16, Junior has been fundraising since he was eight, and has raised over £300,000 for charity. The category he is up for is for his charity fundraising and anti-bullying campaign. An enthusiastic and talented dancer, Junior was nominated for his fundraising and his anti-bullying campaign #BoysCanDance, which addressed the stigma surrounding male dancers. He is due to start on his professional dance career journey in September at Jelli Studio in Liverpool. He continues to perform and provide entertainment for charity events and donates his fees to charity. He is also youth Ambassador for the Leeds Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, based at Leeds General Infirmary.
