Team ‘Lost in Allegro’ Heads for Mongolia
A month long adventure that will take three guys from their homes in Headingley to Mongolia, all in the name of charity.
One to look out for this month is JFest International, a huge celebration of Jewish arts and music at The Carriageworks; Alan Bennett is headlining at The Big Bookend – the rock festival for words; and Headingley Music Festival chalks up its fifth year! With fine weather promised, numerous people are taking up challenges – from running and cycling to crazy
expeditions half way across the world in clapped out cars! We are particularly sad to bring you the news of Richard Crossley’s death. Richard had played a leading role in the Headingley community for many years and will be sorely missed. As usual there’s lots going on so check out the Community Pages. And, don’t forget to check our website (www. northleedslife.co.uk) for even more news and events. We look forward to receiving your upcoming news. The discovery of the structure of DNA by the Cambridge scientists James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953 was without doubt one of the biggest landmarks in the history of science. It not only transformed our understanding of biology but also enabled huge advances in medicine such as the production of new forms of insulin

Dr Kersten Hall’s new book ‘Man in the Monkeynut Coat’ tells his story. Through his groundbreaking work using X-rays to study the molecular structure of wool fibres for the local textile industries of West Yorkshire in the late 1920s, Astbury not only helped to transform our understanding of biology, but also laid the foundations for the momentous discovery of the structure of DNA by Cambridge scientists, James Watson and Francis Crick. However, while Watson and Crick went on to win the Nobel Prize for their discovery, Astbury’s name is now barely remembered outside Leeds. Yet in his time he was a scientist of international stature whose biggest idea found its expression

in the form of a rather unusual overcoat. “Astbury interested me for reasons other than science”, said Dr Kersten Hall. “He was very much a man pulled in opposite directions. While his head told him that life was simply a complex assembly of molecules, his heart told him that this simply could not be the whole story. I think that it was perhaps this tension that made him such an intriguing character to write about. His life and work have given Leeds a fantastic scientific heritage of which the city can be very proud.”

ROWLAND WINN (1871-1959) AN EARLY MOTOR CAR ENTHUSIAST
When motor cars first appeared on the roads in the 1890s they were viewed with great suspicion and fiercely opposed by horseowners and rail and tram companies. Initially classed as locomotives, their speed limit was four miles an hour and a man with a red flag had to walk well in front to warn other road-users. Their future seemed deeply uncertain, but one young man in Leeds, Rowland Winn, was fired with enthusiasm for this new form of transport and for the business opportunities it offered. Rowland Winn was born in 1871, the third son in a family of nine children. From modest beginnings his father had built up a successful practice as an architect, but Rowland chose not to follow in his footsteps – he had a mechanical bent and was determined to pursue it. When he left Leeds Modern School he was apprenticed to a firm of hydraulic engineers, then took a variety of jobs working with engines, building up his expertise. In 1892, just 21, he persuaded two friends to join him in renting a cellar in Cookridge Street where they made and repaired cycles during the day and worked on engines in the evenings. He soon bought his friends out (for £7.19s) and set up on his own, but money was tight and his father was dismissive of Rowland’s wild dreams of a career with these new-fangled machines. But he persevered, built up the business, and by 1899 had become the first agent in Leeds for a range of cars from home and abroad – Levassor, Benz, De Dion, Daimler. His success meant he could move to larger premises behind the Town Hall. These cars were expensive, catering for a luxury market where his specialist knowledge and skills were highly valued. Rowland began to offer driving lessons to potential owners, and thought up stunts to publicise and popularise this exciting new mode of transport – he drove an Oldsmobile up and down the Town Hall steps; he borrowed Ernest Beckett’s ‘Gladiator car’, bedecked in flowers, for his wedding in 1902; he drove across Woodhouse Moor and was convicted of speeding ‘furiously’ at 12 mph; and wherever he went he attracted attention with his musical horn. He acquired a national reputation as a driver and car expert, taking part in rallies and competitions across the country. In 1900 he lectured to the Leeds Association of Engineers on ‘Modern Motor Vehicles’, foreseeing a time when increased demand would mean cheaper cars for the common man – and the possible advantages of cars powered by electricity instead of ‘spirit’.
June_2014_Area_A.indd 8
In 1903 an Act was passed which recognised the motor car as a new form of transport, introduced licensing, and raised the speed limit to 20mph. Rowland acquired the first Leeds license – U1 – which he gave to his friend Arthur Currer Briggs when he was elected Lord Mayor; it has remained the Lord Mayor’s number ever since. In the same year of 1903 Henry Ford started producing the low-priced Model T Ford – motoring for the masses. Rowland Winn was the first and sole Ford distributor in Yorkshire, and took full advantage of the rapid expansion of the market for cars in the years prior to the First World War. His business boomed, and he and his wife Lucy moved upmarket to Headingley, first to 1 Alma Road and later Oakwood House, Claremont Road. During the First World War he took on an official role to introduce motorised tractors into Yorkshire agriculture, which won him an MBE. In the 1920s and 30s his company continued to expand and prosper, now with imposing showrooms and workshops in Woodhouse Lane (where the Merrion Centre stands now), with tempting displays of glittering new cars. Meanwhile he took on various public roles, serving as a Councillor (Conservative) for 29 years and as Lord Mayor in 1939, on the verge of war. Though now in his seventies he was active in organising essential wartime transport services in Leeds. One of his personal interests was the Leeds Children’s Holiday Camp at Silverdale, near Morecambe, founded in 1904, to which he donated £15,000. The camp still
provides disadvantaged children from Leeds with free holidays in beautiful surroundings. In the 1950s he retired from public and business life, and in 1956, three years before he died, he was awarded the Freedom of the City in recognition of his contribution to the city’s life and prosperity.

Everyone is encouraged to hold a Blooming Great Tea Party between 21st and 29th June to help raise funds for the charity. It can be as simple as a cuppa with colleagues, a vintage inspired tea party, or a garden party with friends. It’s a great way to get together to do something easy and fun for charity. Whether it’s for a journey to the airport, a night out or a business trip, Arrow cars, with its fleet of E Class Mercedes saloons and Mercedes Vito 8-seaters delivers a high quality service at affordable prices.
e all look forward to a break, a time away from the stresses and strains of everyday life and we want our holiday to start smoothly and in comfort. When people talk about a chauffeur in a posh car, we all think, “that would be nice…if only it didn’t cost the earth”. Well, at Arrow Cars, it no longer costs the earth to travel in style, they offer their New E Class Mercedes service for only a small supplement. For example, if you are flying from Manchester, a one-way journey in an E Class Mercedes, with a fully uniformed driver, will cost just £85. You don’t need to worry about driving on one of the country’s busiest motorways in rush hour, booking a parking space at the airport, or hauling your luggage onto a shuttle bus to take you to the terminal. You can just relax, sit back and enjoy the journey.
June_2014_Area_A.indd 10
“Most people think of a journey in a Mercedes as being an expensive, unaffordable luxury”, said David Richmond, Chairman of Arrow Cars. “Until recently, I would have agreed. But now, with the introduction of our new Mercedes service, it is affordable. We can now take you to Manchester Airport, from anywhere in Leeds, for only £85, and just £110 in one of our Mercedes Vito 8-seaters, that’s

only £13.75 per person! For other journeys, it’s the same story. To put things into perspective, a 7.5 mile journey will be charged at £15.” Arrow is the only company in the city to offer such high quality and comfort at significantly lower prices than you would traditionally associate with a chauffeur service. Arrow also provides free WIFI in its E Class cars. Whether you’re travelling on business or just want to keep the kids entertained, free WIFI is another little benefit from Arrow. To book, simply call them on 0113 258 5888, where you can book both your departure and return journeys.

On 19th July, Simon Kuznetsov (who teaches in Skipton), Alastair Adams (a settlements administrator at TD Direct), and Vincent Cook (a recruitment consultant at Shakleton Duke) will be setting off in a 38 year old Austin Allegro Estate on a month long adventure, driving from their homes in Headingley to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, all in the name of charity.
his insane adventure is part of the annual Mongol Rally, where teams from all over the world drive ridiculous cars from London to Mongolia. There is no set route, no help and no support vehicles along the way. The teams have to get themselves over 10,000 miles of awful roads, desserts, mountain ranges and river crossings to reach their destination. Team ‘Lost in Allegro’ is entering in a 1976 Austin Allegro Estate – regarded by the motoring press as ‘the worst car ever made’! The car will have new wheels and tyres, a full engine prep, and a set of rare spare parts collected with sponsorship from the Leeds English Language School, Hicks & Weatherburn, Studio 81 and Stone

Mill Stay, with Princess Garage in Headingley and Fobi’s Hardware in Meanwood helping out too. “We have confidence in the car now, and really can’t wait to get started”, said Simon. “We know an Allegro has done it before, but this will be the first ever estate version, one of only four still running in the UK. We love our ‘Melanie’ and are keen to prove the Austin can do it!”
The lads all attended Lawnswood High School together and have dreamt of taking on the Mongol Rally. They are keen to explore new countries, have a once in a lifetime experience, and raise money for some great causes. The team is planning to take the southern route, crossing around 15 countries, travelling through Europe then into Turkey, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, before taking a short cut through Russia into Mongolia. The trip should take around 30 days. The team aims to raise £5,000 for four charities – Alzheimers Research UK, Friends of Alfie Martin (LGI Neonatal Unit), Shelterbox, and Cool Earth. The Lost in Allegro boys will also be filming a feature length documentary of their trip, which will be shown at the Cottage Road Cinema in the Autumn. In May 2011, Airedale House on Kirkstall Road threw open its doors and invited local businesses in to it’s carefully designed corporate environment. Nearly three years on, it has expanded to accommodate even more local enterprise. A further nine offices have just opened, and Airedale House is now home to 28 successful businesses that all have the flexibility to expand or contract as their businesses change. These include PR and marketing companies, advertising and recruitment agencies and even a small, local brewery. The facilities include ample free car parking, three fully equipped conference/meeting rooms, tea rooms, restrooms and even showers.
It’s a big family!

“We like to think of Airedale House as a big family”, said Adam Duffield. The Centre is family run, with Martyn Duffield as Chairman, with his two sons Adam and Simon as joint managing directors. Not only did they found the business together, they rolled up their sleeves and actually built the Business Centre themselves! Everything is in place to ensure that tenants can comfortably and effectively get on with their business. Every office is fully equipped with state-ofthe-art, super fast broadband and network communications systems. You can be up and running in under two hours. to the corporate environment. Everything is provided, right down to the tea and coffee. The space is highly flexible. Suites are priced to incentivise small companies to grow and can accommodate from two to 18 people. The offices include air conditioning, CCTV and security shutters, secure key fob enabling 24/7 access and all utility bills. “We created Airedale House as a business with the aim to facilitate new enterprises and there’s nothing we like more than to see our clients’ businesses succeed and expand into their own premises”, said Simon Duffield. “Job done!”
There’s space to grow and room to breathe. The building, originally a bicycle warehouse for Raleigh Bikes in the 1800s, provides beautiful spaces with high ceilings and large arched windows. It is right on the River Aire, overlooking Kirkstall Valley Nature Reserve, which is home to a herd of deer, a family of otters, kingfishers, numerous other birds and butterflies, and swans that sail majestically past. You’d never believe you were just minutes from the city centre and right on busy Kirkstall Road.

JFest International returns to The Carriageworks, Millennium Square, from Sunday 29th June – Wednesday 2nd July. Now in its 14th year, JFest has a lot to celebrate and presents a definite theme - the Jewish journey - from the arrival of Jewish immigrants to the UK, to their accomplishments in the world of musical theatre and the birth of a talented generation.
The opening show, the Next Generation Showcase, features winners of national and regional child and youth talent competitions and individuals with exceptional talent. The diverse line up makes for an electrifying show! Opening night continues with the premiere of ‘Bridge Street – The Musical’. Starting where Fiddler on the Roof left off, this fast moving musical, staged by the Sinai Players, tells of the challenge of starting life in a new country, love, loss and encounters with already established, colourful characters. The Jewish Legacy Show offers you ‘a night at the musicals’. Delivered by four sensational performers from London and live musicians, this amazing production celebrates unforgettable shows such as West Side Story, Funny Girl and The Wizard of Oz and is guaranteed to have you singing your favourite show songs all the way home! This year sees the first ever ‘Jazz at the Fest’, an outstanding double bill of sensational jazz opening with Judessa Jazz, London, followed by

Anna has dedicated her life to giving young musicians an opportunity to learn music at a high level, teaching each individually for five or six hours a day after school. The result is a phenomenal performance. For full details, visit www. leedsjewishfestival.com, email info@makor.co.uk/ or call 0113 268 0899.

STARS Do ‘Ladies Day’
Once again, Northern Ballet presents a ‘Mixed Programme’ of dance gems in the intimate surroundings of the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre. This is a rare opportunity to see the company’s athletic and talented dancers perform, and runs from Wednesday 18th – Saturday 21st June, 7.30pm (Saturday matinee 2.30pm). The programme will feature dazzling dance from three remarkable choreographers – Dutch dance master Hans van Manen, one of America’s leading dance makers Lar Lubovitch, and Northern Ballet’s premier dancer and choreographer Kenneth Tindall, and includes a world première that will only be seen in Leeds. Hans van Manen’s sensational ‘Concertante’, inspired by and set to Frank Martin’s Petite Symphonie Concertante, returns by popular request. ‘Concerto Six Twenty-Two’ is by ‘one of the ten best choreographers in the world’ (New York Times) and Tony Award nominated, Lar Lubovitch. Kenneth Tindall’s

choreographic debut Project#1 and follow up Luminous Junc·ture have attracted critical acclaim and made him one to watch in the dance world. The première of his hotly anticipated new work, ‘The Architect’, which takes inspiration from the story of Adam & Eve, promises to be a stylish work with atmospheric music and the inevitable ‘Kenny twist’. “It is always a great thrill to have the opportunity to showcase the immense talent of our dancers to audiences at our home in Leeds”, said David Nixon, Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director. “Performing a masterwork such as Concertante is a real challenge and demonstrates the high standard of the Company. We’re excited to be working with Lar Lubovitch on Concerto Six Twenty-Two. And, I am delighted for Kenneth Tindall to have the opportunity to stage the première of The Architect; it’s important that we encourage and nurture such talent in our dancers.”
STARS, the North Leeds drama group, presents ‘Ladies’ Day’, a warm-hearted exuberant comedy by Amanda Whittington, from Wednesday 4th to Saturday 7th June, 7.30pm at the Adel & Ireland Wood Community Centre, New Adel Lane, LS16 6AZ. Work, love and life are just one hard slog for the fish factory foursome. Friends together, their fortunes are set to change when they set out for Ladies’ Day at the races. Out go the hairnets, overalls and wellies as the four ditch work, do themselves up to the nines and head off to the races for a drink, a flirt and a flutter. If their luck holds, they could hit the jackpot – and more besides.... Playing the ‘friends’ are Judith Smith, a long time member of Stars, who has made a speciality of comedy roles; Jane Collins, who won the Leeds Civic Arts Guild best actress award for her part in Stars’ production of Men of the World last year; Louise Timmins, who as well as acting has worked in youth and children’s theatre and is appearing in her first Stars production; and Charlotte Thornton who joined the group last year and received well-deserved praise for her role as Ruby Birtle in When We Are Married. Meanwood Community Centre on Stainbeck Avenue is currently a hive of activity due to an ambitious new production by Musical Arc, its resident arts organisation, which combines shadow theatre, traditional and contemporary dance and music. With a grant from the Arts Council, Musical Arc, a charity for disabled musicians, has commissioned puppeteer Rebekah Caputo to devise a shadow show of ‘The Mango Tree’, a story based on an Indian folk tale. This promises to be a spectacular event that will merge shadow and dance using a multi-screen set. Dancers become shadow puppets, puppets become dancers in a seamless fusion. A magical original soundtrack composed and performed by
Musical ARC will accompany the performance. Rebekah will work closely with Indian Kathak dancer, Jyoti Manral and contemporary dancers to bring this tale of princesses, demons, lotus flowers and mangos to life! The performance will take place on Friday 20th June, 7pm at Leeds College of Music, 3 Quarry Hill, LS2 7PD. Tickets are available from 0113 222 3434 or www.lcm.ac.uk/whats-on. Meanwood residents and school children will be given a sneak preview on Monday 9th June at 1.15pm. Thanks to a grant from Leeds Wellbeing Fund, Musical Arc will host a ‘Mango Grove’ workshop as a prelude to the main event, where participants will experience shadow theatre, Indian dance, arts and traditional refreshments. If you would like to attend, please call and leave a message on 0113 275 5614 or e-mail: office@musicalarc.org.uk Musical ARC is a charity for disabled musicians, which has been operating in North Leeds for over 20 years. We have been keen to identify projects which support the elderly and vulnerable, and this is doing just that.” Wheatfields Hospice provides palliative care for over 2,500 people living with incurable illnesses each year. Established over 35 years ago, Sue Ryder not only provides specialist medical care to ease pain and discomfort, but also offers people and their families real emotional support during difficult times. “Although we have some very skilled photographers in our society, most are amateurs. The musical ‘Wicked’ is coming to Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 10th June – Saturday 5th July. In a brilliantly witty reimagining of the stories and characters created by L. Frank Baum in ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’, Wicked tells the story of an unlikely but profound friendship between two sorcery students whose extraordinary adventures in Oz ultimately see them fulfil their destinies as Glinda The Good, and the Wicked Witch of the West. Wicked is entering its ninth year in London. It has been seen by over 39 million people around the world and has nine productions running concurrently. With music by Grammy® and Academy Award® winner Stephen Schwartz, and spectacular costumes designed by Susan Hilfirty, Wicked grabs you from the second the curtain rises. We spoke to Michael McCabe, Executive Producer (UK) who just couldn’t contain his enthusiasm

for the show. “What’s exciting is that this is a brand new show”, he told us. “With all the well known musicals around, everyone was up for something new and contemporary. Wicked is not based on a film or anything – it is a brand new show, hugely unique, with great special effects and numerous twists and turns and interesting moments as the story links back to the Wizard of Oz. You have no idea what’s going to happen. It’s full of surprises, and discovering how these characters became the people we know is fascinating.” Touring Wicked is a huge undertaking. It is truly spectacular. Perhaps the best known number is ‘Define Gravity’, which has been performed by countless people (including the cast of Glee in its first season). It presents an extraordinary moment in the show.

A couple of friends had mentioned a little Turkish restaurant on Rodley Lane, Rodley, and told us we should check it out….so we did!
Up to last November Ephesus was a tiny, intimate little eatery with just 30 covers. They soon found themselves having to turn prospective diners away as they just couldn’t accommodate any more. Then the premises next door became available and Ephesus extended into it, doubling the size of the restaurant. The new extension is big and bright with a large open kitchen across the back. We thought that a Monday night would be quiet, but we were wrong. Although there were a few couples, the diners were mainly small groups of women – we wondered if there was a women’s convention we hadn’t heard about. Anyhow, on to the important stuff – the food! There were four of us so we decided to make the best of the starter menu and ordered two sharing meze platters, one hot, one cold. These were gorgeous, so fresh and tasty and a lovely variety. The cold platter included humus, cacik, vine leaves, feta cheese, spicy ezme, mixed olives, aubergine salad and

saksuka; the hot had Hallumi cheese, cheesy peppers, falafel, cheese roll, sucuk, muska boregi and calamari. Not a scrap was left! We then moved on to try one of Ephesus’s signature dishes, the Iskender kebab - slices of lamb and bread with a special butter Iskender sauce with garlic, natural yoghurt, parsley and Turkish herbs. The Lamb Moussaka with its layers of aubergines, courgettes, potatoes and minced lamb, topped with a creamy béchamel cheese sauce was equally tasty and the little salad accompaniments on the plate offered a nice contrast to the dish’s creaminess.
We were also tempted by the Salmon Istanbul – salmon cooked with prawns in a mushroom, grain mustard, garlic and cream sauce; and the Grilled Swordfish, which was marinated in black pepper, cumin and oregano and served with salad and chips. The swordfish was a little overcooked and the chips seemed a little out of place. The nuttiness of the bulgur wheat served with the other dishes was a welcome change from rice and so much tastier. We rounded the meal off with some lovely baklava and coffee. The restaurant may have lost some of its intimacy with its expansion but the welcome and friendliness of the staff is as strong as ever and the food is certainly a hit. Judging by how busy it was on a Monday night. The whole meal for four came to about £100, excluding drinks. Ephesus is currently offering two courses for just £12.99 from 11am – 10pm Sunday to Thursday (except for bank holidays) and you can get a lovely lunch from just £5. Community News The White Rose Shopping Centre recently presented St Gemma’s Hospice with a cheque for £108,800! Since April 2012, staff at the Centre has supported a variety of fundraising activities ranging from tombolas and singing contests, to carol singing and a Mothers’ Day pop-up shop. The Centre’s partnership with St. Gemma’s and Luscombe Suzuki promoting the St. Gemma’s Big Car Raffle raised over £60,000 for the charity. “We would like to say a big thank you to all our shoppers who got behind our fundraising activities over the last two years”, said Dean Stratton, Centre Manager. “We’re delighted that together we’ve managed to raise more than £108,000 for St. Gemma’s Hospice.” For further information about St. Gemma’s, visit www.st-gemma. co.uk.

Almost £36,000 of funding has been approved by local councillors to support the black and minority ethnic (BME) community in North West Leeds.
Councillors on the Inner North West Area Committee have approved funding for six projects, the most significant of which is £10,000 for the Leeds Hindu Charitable Trust for improvements to the community centre adjacent to the Hindu Temple in Burley. The funding will help the Trust redevelop the centre to cater for a wider range of events. Almost £11,000 will be split between two projects designed to improve health and wellbeing. Public Health will commission the Cardigan Centre in Headingley to work

with taxi drivers and workers from fast food outlets whose work patterns can prevent them from eating healthily and being physically active. Funding will also go to the Behno Women’s group to promote healthier lifestyles. Activities will include swimming sessions, exercise classes and healthy cooking lessons. Funding has also been allocated to help children and young people. Over £4,000 goes to youth group Young Minds to run a series of workshops and fitness sessions, aimed at tackling anti-social and criminal behaviour. It is hoped that the sessions will give the young people a sense of belonging and support their personal
development. And, £6,000 has been provided to tackle unemployment and will offer people advice on writing CVs and application forms and help with English skills. The Committee also provided £4,500 to the art group Eastern Media and Arts Network (EMAAN) to help young people in the area produce a series of short films. “The BME community in North West Leeds makes a great contribution to the life and vitality of the city”, said Councillor Javaid Akhtar, Chair of Inner North West Area Committee. “It’s fantastic that we have been able to provide this money, which will help a great number of people in our communities.”

Community ambassadors would need to give up a few evenings every other month to go into schools, associations and churches to speak about the work of Marie Curie Cancer Care, its team of dedicated nurses, and how people can access this care. An Event Coordinator would be responsible for planning the group’s activities, generating ideas and delegating actions such as booking

Development funding of £17,900 has also been awarded to help the North Leeds Gurdwara progress their plans to apply for a full grant at a later date. Potternewton Mansion was built circa 1817 by prominent local wool merchant, James Brown, and originally stood in a 750 acre estate with a 30 acre park to the front of the house. The property had been in public ownership from 1901 to 2006, when it was purchased by the Sikh community for use as a temple. The project will carry out essential work to the roof, windows and stone

Richard Crossley, born and bred in Halifax and a resident of Headingley for 30 years, has died of cancer aged 64.
Richard was the first chief executive of the National Tenant Voice, set up by Labour but abolished by the Coalition Government shortly after the last election. He had previously worked at the front-line of community development and was seconded from the Priority Estates Project (PEP) to the Communities and Local Government Department to work on neighbourhoods policy before being asked to project manage the setting up of the new National Tenant Voice (NTV), designed to make social tenants much more influential in the development of policy at local and national level. Richard returned to live in Yorkshire in 1984. The son of a Yorkshire monumental mason, the area was in his blood. From here he was in his could easily reach the Yorkshire blood. market. Amongst other things, Richard loved organising the film club, with the selection of films decided by the members. In 2012 Richard achieved one of his life ambitions, to go trekking in the Himalayas. Within a year of the trek, Richard had fallen ill, but, his blog (http://richardcrossley1. wordpress.com/), stands as a testament to a uniquely strong and emotionally literate person. A long-term supporter of CND, his politics were a mix of red and green, but his distinctive contribution was as the unwavering advocate of muchmaligned social tenants. In January 2014 Richard received an OBE for services to neighbourhoods and tenants. It was a just award, even for a committed republican. Richard managed to spend his final days at home, in the loving care of his partner Jane, daughter Emma and son Alex, and many other family and friends. Richard Crossley OBE, born 11 January 1950, died 21 April 2014.
Happy Birthday Keith!
Far Headingley Village Society recently surprised Keith Wilson of Glendor DIY with treats to mark his 70th birthday. Keith has been connected to the shop since his parents took it on in the early ‘60s. In the intervening years the shop has become something of an institution and Keith a valued member of the local community. Originally the shop was a showroom for the building firm Keith’s family operated just around the corner on Park Terrace. It wasn’t long before it was used to house the overspill from their crowded stock cupboard and the family began supplying tools and equipment to the local building trade. The place may well have stayed in the specialist trade supply business had one of Keith’s relatives not sold a box of nails to a civilian punter one day, whereupon Glendor (an amalgamation of Keith’s dad’s middle name, Glencoe, and his mother’s name, Dora) became a shop almost by accident. To this day it remains a chaotically ordered treasure trove catering to all your DIY requirements.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, the valley was alive with small scale industrial activity which took its power from the beck. It was a self contained community where people lived close to where they worked. Communication farther afield was across the valley to Headingley or Chapel Allerton. Until the Turnpike Act of 1829, the only way of getting to Leeds from Meanwood was on foot. Before that there was no road up the valley. The quality of roads was important. Reliable, fast transport was vital so goods could be moved from place to place. The income from tolls was used to repair and improve the road.
It was a self contained community where people lived close to where they worked
In 1829 a turnpike road was made from Sheepscar to Meanwood. Some steps were taken by private companies to provide horse transport, but keeping a horse was expensive and Acts of Parliament were needed for the construction of a railway or tramway. In April 1878 Leeds Transport Company applied to Parliament for the use of locomotive steam or other mechanical motive power on their lines, and for the construction of the Meanwood Road Tramway. It was approved, and in July that year a connection was made with Chapeltown Road Railway –
a single track with passing places on Buslingthorpe Lane, joining Meanwood Road at the Primrose pub, a distance of almost one mile. The journey from Briggate cost two pence and operated for 38 journeys a day. But it wasn’t profitable and a proposed extension up Meanwood Road was not built. Leeds Corporation took over the running of public transport in 1901, the fares were cheaper and the system became popular. Doreen Wood Meanwood Village Association

Funding For Summer Youth Activities Local councillors have been able to provide £1,700 for youth activities for one week during the Summer holidays. The funding will go towards a multi sports camp that will be held at Holt Park Active. The scheme will allow 45 children aged 8 – 14 to participate in a variety of sports such as football, cricket, netball and dodge ball. I welcome this programme – the range of sports will
give children a wonderful opportunity to try a new sport or improve their skills in one they already play. With all the recent press about children not being as active as they should be, I am very pleased that we have been able to fund this activity which will hopefully give them an enthusiasm to keep up some form of sporting activity.
Housing - Core Strategy Update

CLLR CLIVE FOX Adel & Wharfedale Ward
The Government’s Planning Inspector recently gave his decision on the Council’s Core Strategy and, although he did not support the claims by the developers that the city needed 90,000 new houses between now and 2028, he did ask the Council to deliver 70,000 new houses in that timeframe. This is a very difficult target to accept. There is no infrastructure in place to cope with this number and neighbouring authorities also have to build large numbers of houses. These will also have
a huge impact on Leeds as they will likely have to access existing services and roads. Bradford has a target of just 42,000. I am wholly committed to the view that we should be using brown field sites first, as the infrastructure is more able to cope with development in areas where development has already taken place. I would like to have see the Inspector accepting the Council’s argument on phasing-in development, so that larger numbers of houses are built in the later years of the 15-year plan when infrastructure is more likely to be in place. This has unfortunately been rejected. I and my colleagues in all parties are arguing for a greater emphasis on regeneration areas. I am very concerned that delivering this number of houses means that a lot of them will be built where their sustainability is questionable. www.barryanderson.yourcllr.com Twitter @barryanderson19

on the cenotaph, they will also find out about some of the other 1,517 men and 24 women who played a part in WW1.
“My interest started about five years ago”, said Stephen Brown, Chairman of Horsforth WWI 100 Years, a group comprising Horsforth Museum, Horsforth School, and the British Legion, alongside Stephen and Mark Saville, the project’s coordinator. “While on business in Europe, I decided to look for the names of Horsforth men on war memorials. Slowly I pieced together their backgrounds, and relatives got in touch providing more information.” Mark Saville scoured the archives of local papers like The Wharfedale Observer, photographing articles on Horsforth from 1880 – 1939 (over

25,000 photos!). He passed these on to Stephen who matched the Cenotaph men to the articles, then researched the action they were involved in. They also contacted next of kin and the Commonwealth Graves Commission. “It is a very large and complex project and we used a wide range of resources”, said Mark. “Horsforth men were deployed all over the world – one was an air ace, others were submariners, and some were prisoners of war – they all had a story to tell.” Now, thanks to the Lottery funding, all these eyewitness accounts are being recorded and brought together in a book. Part of the funding will go towards a
website that will have information on about 240 men, their families and the action they were involved in. There will also be a leaflet setting out a trail of buildings in the town and how they were associated with the war – for example, Café Marinetti on Town Street housed Belgian refugees, and all the allotments were part of a war effort. The trail will lead on to the cemetery where the graves and family graves will be found. There will also be a number of guided walks led by Susan Watson. In 1921 a memorial road (Stanhope Drive) was built and 201 trees planted – one for each of the fallen, with a brass plaque at each tree base. In 1925 a commemorative stone was placed on the street. On Remembrance Sunday in November, the Horsforth branch of the British Legion will place two information panels on the drive and re-dedicate the memorial and avenue of trees. To further mark the WW1 centenary, a week-long exhibition is planned to coincide with Remembrance Sunday. Exhibition panels will be on display both in a central venue and at various other locations in Horsforth with links to the war. There will be displays of artifacts, photographs and memorabilia, and a series of talks, together with workshops for local primary and secondary schools.

A plea for help! The Adel Neighbourhood Forum has reached a critical stage in its development with two important issues coming together at the same time. The first is the development proposal opposite St John the Baptist Church; the second, the process of achieving statutory recognition of the Adel Neighbourhood Plan. The Forum is grateful for financial support from ‘Supporting Communities in Neighbourhood Planning’. However this will be consumed by the necessary research to complete the Neighbourhood Plan. Additional resources are needed to fund professional advice for our
opposition to the development proposals on the grounds of traffic, heritage and environment, and an unsustainable social and education infrastructure. David Wilson Homes (DWH) and Hallam Land are pressing ahead with their proposals. In the first application the Council received a planning application for 88 homes on the upper northern fields, which separate them from Centurion Fields, on Holt Avenue. The proposed access is off Otley Road. A second application for around 60 homes on the field next to Centurion Fields has also been made. The community did not receive any notification from the developers that they were submitting their applications, despite giving an undertaking that they would do so. Cllr Barry Anderson arranged a public meeting with residents, developers, planning officers and other relevant officers from Leeds City Council on 8th May. A report will follow next month and details will be on our website. The next step in achieving statutory recognition is
to produce a draft neighbourhood plan. This will be the subject of a community engagement exercise that will enable residents and other interested parties to have their say before the final document is produced. If you are able to provide some financial support to the Forum, please contact me or send cheques to 1 Park View, Adel, LS16 8DF To keep up to date, visit www. adelneighbourhoodforum.co.uk or follow us on Twitter @AdelForum

The Consultation on the Designation of Headingley Neighbourhood Plan closes on 30 May. If you would like to make a last-minute response, further details are on the Council website, at http://www.leeds.gov.uk/council/ Pages/Neighbourhood-planning.aspx The aim of the Plan is to promote and improve the social, economic and environmental wellbeing of Headingley. The Neighbourhood is focussed on the town centre and extends from Beckett’s Park in the west to Hyde Park in the east, between Shaw Lane to the north and Victoria Road to the south. In particular, we want to pursue the national planning policy of ‘creating a sustainable, mixed and inclusive community’. Key to this will be local housing

Once the consultation is complete, we look forward to official Designation of the Plan. Then we can hold the first meeting of the Neighbourhood Forum, made up of local residents, businesses and councillors, which will be responsible for developing the Plan. The first meeting should take place in June. At the same time, we shall be organising public meetings, so that all residents who are interested can get involved. As well as hosting the event, Cookridge Cricket will also provide the opposition! Rob Moss (Chairman) hopes that the event will help to attract new members to the Dales Council Cricket League club.
“OPAL is a fantastic charity and makes a huge difference to the lives of many older people in North Leeds”, said Sally-Annen Notley, Volunteer Coordinator. “We have organised the cricket match to help raise much needed funds, increase awareness of our work and provide a fun day for our members, their families and the community.”
Alongside the cricket, which will include an OPAL team made up of staff, volunteers and older people, there will be a host of activities, including homemade cake stalls, tombola, face painting and much more. They will also be serving afternoon tea so you can enjoy a real slice of English Summer. Avanta Care half page ad 2 153 x 110 :Layout 1 12/03/2014 15:40 Page 1

In the past, if people were no longer able to lead an independent life at home, a care home was often the only solution. Fortunately, today there is a growing number of health and social care providers responding to the demand for living provision that fits the needs and aspirations of older people. “Some people need 24-hour care, some may need care some of the time, and others don’t need any at all but would like more company”, said Peter Hodkinson, Managing Director of Westward Care. “There are those who don’t want the everyday struggle of running a house, and those who want to be looked after at home. Everybody’s different, which is why more providers are moving away from the one-size-fitsall approach and offering real choice.” In 2010, Westward Care launched 25 independent living apartments at Headingley Hall. You can buy these fully equipped luxury apartments, adapt them to your individual needs, and live in completely independently, but with the added reassurance of care and additional services such as house-keeping, dining and support if needed.
There are 23 new luxury independent living apartments currently under construction at Southlands in Roundhay. Available Winter 2014.

Michelle, 80, owns and lives in an independent living apartment at Headingley Hall. She says: “Apart from Headingley being the hub of the world (second only to the Latin quarter in Paris!), I love the fact that I can live completely independently, yet within a supportive community where I can access help if I want it.” French by birth and a still a keen cyclist, Michelle is particularly excited about the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire.
Four years on, the company is launching a further 23 of these apartments at Southlands in Roundhay. In response to comments of existing and potential residents, these have been fine tuned to include a full-time concierge service, bespoke interior design, and the availability of one and two bedroomed units. But how do you find out about what’s available locally, assess what’s right for you, and make sure your chosen provider is good at what they do? A lovely green lawn is a perfect foil for the bright June flowers. From now right through the Summer, mow your lawn a little and often to keep it looking its best. In very hot weather, you can leave it a little bit longer to help conserve moisture. Lawns generally recover well from dry spells, so it is not strictly necessary to water an established lawn if you want to save water. New lawns, however will need watering whenever the weather becomes dry.
One of the most enjoyable instant gardening projects is to plant up a basket or container with some colourful bedding plants. The garden centres are brimming with beautiful, healthy bedding plants just now so there will a choice of colours and shapes to inspire you. Be sure to add some slow release plant food to the compost before you start, and fit in as many plants as you can so that the arrangement will look lavish

Food from the Garden Berries are the taste of Summer! Juicy raspberries, strawberries and gooseberries should be ripe and ready to harvest now and can be made into ice lollies and delicious puddings as well as tasting delightful straight from the plant. Lettuces, Asparagus, Rocket, Radishes and Peas may also be ready to pick. It is not too late to start your own veg. patch as many vegetable seeds can be sown directly into the garden right now. don’t have a garden you can grow some lettuce or rocket in a container on your balcony or patio.

With the support of local volunteers and organisations, Kirkstall Community Garden is creating a community garden in the Church Lane Allotments. The garden opened in late March and they plan to run gardening events so members of the community can learn new skills, share ideas and grow their own food. You need to become a member to attend events – membership is free and open to all adults aged 18 or over. Places for gardening sessions are limited, so booking may be required. The group is also creating community open growing space where people are invited to plant and share the food grown. Working with organisations like Feed Leeds, Food Aid Network, Leeds Mind, Youth Point, Sensory Leeds and local schools, Kirkstall Community Garden is helping others to set up and create their own community gardens, as well as helping people access educational resources and work experience. There’s a variety of roles available for volunteers, based around gardening, preparing allotments and helping at events. For further information, contact kirkstallgarden@gmail. com. All events will be posted in the community garden shed and via social media @kirkstallgarden and www.facebook.com/ kirkstallgarden Kirkstall Community Garden is run by a committee of volunteers and aims to promote a healthy sustainable lifestyle and provide free access to growing space, facilities and educational resources in a fun, safe environment.

BIRD WATCH WITH STAN KENYON Among the loudest voices of the dawn chorus is that of the Blackcap, a newly arrived Summer visitor from the Mediterranean and West Africa. Its beautiful rich song is a fluting melody carrying far.
A little larger than a robin, the Blackcap is a vigorous stocky warbler. Males are grey above with a small black cap and light olive-grey below, while females have a rufous cap. Their preferred habitat is shady woodland with dense understorey, and parks and large gardens whether urban or rural. Relatively adaptable, blackcaps are a common species across lowland England and Wales and are spreading north into

Scotland. Locally they occur for example on Meanwoodside and in Roundhay Park. While many species continue to decline, happily the Blackcap tends to increase year by year. In the last 20 years some birds breeding in central Europe have started to spend Winters
in Britain rather than trek all the way to the Mediterranean. They have become regular visitors to bird feeders. This strategy is thought to increase their Winter survival and enable them to return earlier to their Continental breeding territories.

Frank is loosely based on, or rather uses as its jumping off point, journalist Jon Ronson’s account of his time spent playing keyboards for Frank Sidebottom, the bizarre alter-ego of comic/ eccentric/musician/all-round-oddball Chris Sievey. In character as Frank, Sievey would perform in an oversized papier mache head and his schtick was nasal renditions of original material and mangled cover versions in a skewed, twisted lounge act style, each song rounded off with the refrain “You know it is, it really is”. I remember Sidebottom from various TV appearances from when I was younger. At the time my critical faculties were not yet sufficiently developed to appreciate the avant-garde or the wilder shores of pop culture and I don’t think I was able to get past “why is this guy singing so strangely and what’s with the giant head?” Thankfully, in the intervening years, I have wholeheartedly embraced the weird and wonderful and this fictionalised cinematic outing for Frank serves up a generous helping of both. Domhnall Gleeson plays Jon, an aspiring songwriter who
June_2014_Area_A.indd 52
seems to struggle coming up with anything resembling a decent song. A chance encounter with a touring band sees him hastily recruited as the new keyboard player with The Soronprfbs (have fun trying to pronounce that), the anarchic, experimental

pop band fronted the enigmatic, magnetic, globe-headed Frank. After a chaotic and prematurely curtailed gig which serves as his trial by fire, Jon is whisked away to an isolated resort in Ireland where he’s told they are to begin work on an album. The scheduled work on the album stretches out indefinitely, comprised mainly of ‘field recordings’ and various sonic experiments. Jon immediately falls under Frank’s spell, seduced by his inspired and surreal pop musings and unique creative approach. He throws himself into the process as much as possible while documenting the group’s progress on social media. Still with a misplaced belief in his own limited talent, his attempts to shoehorn in his own song writing contributions are met with open hostility by the rest of the group, particularly the volatile Carla (Maggie Gyllenhaal in a truly intimidating and unhinged performance). Needless to say, things grow progressively curiouser and curiouser, not least when Jon somehow manages to secure The Soronprfbs a slot at South by Southwest and the band embarks
15/05/2014 09:34
on an ill fated journey to Austin, Texas. As a tribute to the importance and integrity of outsider musical artists, the film is possessed by the untamed spirits of the likes of Captain Beefheart and Daniel Johnston. The album recording scenes, in particular, brought to mind the fabled and infamous sessions that produced Beefheart’s mental magnum opus, Trout Mask Replica, and if you like this kind of thing, the documentary The Devil and Daniel Johnston is essential viewing. T h o u g h perfectly decent in the role, Domhnall Gleeson as Jon is merely a foil to the other more intriguing characters, the quiet centre of the storm as the craziness swirls around him. The reliably great Gyllenhal, as I’ve mentioned, is on excellent form and it was a nice surprise to see the drummer from Jack White’s all female backing band crop up here as The Soronprfbs rhythm section. But it is Fassbender as Frank (in a sublimely bizarre piece of casting) who steals the show. Despite spending the majority of the picture encased in that absurd giant head he turns in a surprisingly dynamic and expressive performance, making the most of his muffled voice and
June_2014_Area_A.indd 53
bringing an exuberant physicality to the role. And he does all his own singing! As for the music, it’s really something else, meaning it’s pretty out there and really quite brilliant (in parts). When Jon suggests to Frank that they might draw a wider audience if the tunes were more populist or likable, Frank obliges by writing what he calls his ‘most likable song ever’ and the result is hysterical. So, this may not be the Frank Sidebottom biopic I’m not sure anyone was waiting for but it’s a singular piece and a fitting tribute to the source of its inspiration. It may not be for everyone, just as Chris Sievey’s creation was a peculiar, acquired taste, but I found it all too easy to get swept up in the unbridled lunacy of Frank. Between the madcap, knockabout larks, it also sensitively touches on themes of mental illness and explores those regions of the artistic spectrum where genius and insanity intersect. The film doesn’t belabour or overdo its zany aspects but is involving, fresh, funny and disarmingly poignant. I’m keen to see it again and I’ll be picking up the soundtrack first chance I get. Would I recommend this film? Well, if I may be perfectly Frank … Absolutely!

Headingley Music Festival It’s time for Headingley Music Festival! Now in its fifth year, it runs 7th – 14th June at several locations, including HEART, New Headingley Club, Café Lento, Mint Café, Headingley Farmers’ Market and The Packhorse, Hyde Park. The Festival kicks off with Apollo Jazz Network & Fat Face Trio at HEART on Saturday 7th at 8pm. There’s Latin American Folk with Metisa at Mint Café, North Lane, on Monday 9th (£7.50 including a buffet!). It’s Irish music at Café Lento on 10th. If you play, bring your instrument and join in. The Adam Frost Trio is at HEART on Wednesday 11th playing
Drawing comparisons to Rudimental, Gorillaz, Chase & Status, and Massive Attack, D&C are a refreshing, versatile and eclectic prospect who, on the strength of what I’ve heard so far, should be tearing up dance floors the world over before too long. Their sumptuously produced, strings-leaden debut release, Always Broke, what you might call an ‘austerity anthem’ or perhaps, more accurately; ‘Credit Crunch Banger’, features a smoothly flowing vocal from up and coming solo artist, Benn Moore and the outrageously catchy, mantra-like refrain of the chorus makes it a guaranteed earworm. The track has already proved to be like catnip to remixers with more than a few tasty mixes knocking around on the internet. Deuce & Charger seems to be a broad church incorporating various elements and styles of dance music; House, Breakbeat, Dubstep, Garage, while retaining a solid Pop sensibility.

With this core collective of writers, DJs, producers and musicians, collaboration is the name of the game and there’s certainly no shortage of local talent eager to get involved. Their next release Stop the Sky From Falling should be due for release any time now and features local soulstress and friend of the mag, Bianca Gerald and Leeds-based rapper, Wheezy Jefferson. Also, the group’s crowdsourced video for Always Broke has just been released. The brilliantly simple but inspirational concept was to invite fans to send them footage illustrating what makes them feel good despite being ‘always broke’. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished video and also hope some variety of live experience will soon be on offer. I’ll certainly be keeping an ear out for future Deuce & Charger releases.

Countdown to Le Grand Depart
Valley Striders CC Now Boasts Over 100 Members! Valley Striders Cycling Club sprung up in 2013 from Alwoodley-based running club Valley Striders. Initially it was just a few running friends getting together for fun and cross training, but it soon grew into something much bigger. Today they have over 100 members! VSCC caters for injured runners both from its own and other local running clubs, and runners looking to prevent injury in the first place. “We have found that people recovering from sporting injuries can stay fit and continue training with this low impact activity”, said founding member Andy Stoneman. Cycling is becoming increasingly popular and appeals to all ages and abilities. The club pride itself on attracting complete novices through to accomplished athletes like Tracey Morris, former Olympic marathon runner. After finding this friendly group to ride with, many new members, inspired by the Tour de France, have entered sportives – organised non-competitive cycling events. Twenty two riders have entered the Open Cycling ‘Coast to Coast in a day’ (150 mile ride
June_2014_Area_A.indd 58
from Seascale to Whitby). There is also a large number doing the Etape du Yorkshire, which follows Stage 1 of this year’s Tour de France. Three times a week, the club offer rides for varying abilities. Members can cycle with groups of similar abilities and ambitions, and this helps new riders learn the ropes. The club also has a ‘ride to work’ buddy scheme and offers to accompany new commuters to work, building confidence and learning from those that have been doing it for years. Valley Striders Cycling Club has members aged from 16 to 60, racers, mountain bikers and commuters. They welcome new cyclists and offer a ‘try us twice’ policy before asking for the annual membership fee. To find out more email: cycling@ valleystriders.org.uk or join their facebook page ‘Valley Striders CC’.

Otley Courthouse Gears Up for Le Tour Otley Courthouse will host three weeks of celebratory events to mark the Tour’s arrival in Otley.
Paris to Leeds! Whose Idea Was That?
The programme includes ‘Le Grand Voyage’ on 28th June, an interactive theatrical experience which places the audience at the heart of a fantastical cycle race that steadily becomes more bizarre; and ‘Life Cycle’, a play exploring the life of a lone cyclist through music played on instruments made from bicycle parts, on 11th July. There will also be workshops on making ‘scareclists’ (scarecrow cyclists!) with community arts company The Big Hoo-Ha, who will encourage participants to put a local spin on decorative bicycles that will adorn the route. In addition, they’ll be celebrating all things Gallic with ‘Being Brel’ on 21st June – an intense, one-man show probing the life and works of the legendary Jacques Brel. “We’re hugely excited by what the Tour means as a shared cultural event for the people that live here”, said Dave Robson, Chair of the Courthouse Board, “and hope that the wide range of activities we have on offer, from knitting and storytelling to carnival parades, will encourage people to come down and try something new.” On race day itself, the Courthouse will open early with bands, dancing and big screen coverage of the action in its Courtyard. For more information, visit www. otleycourthouse.org.uk or call 01943 467466
You know the story….. you meet some friends for a beer and before you know it, you’re cycling from Paris to Leeds! Led by Chris Clyburn, the group of six riders and two support crew will set off from the cobbles of the Champs Elysee and ride the 800km to the cobbles of Dock Street, arriving six days later in time for the Grand Depart. The group is hoping to raise a staggering £10,000 for the Jane Tomlinson Appeal. “We are funding the whole trip ourselves”, said Chris. “So we are asking local companies and residents to sponsor us to really make it worthwhile for the charity.” The group includes Dr Ai Lyn Tan who only learned to ride a bike in December 2013! “We have a mixed bag of experience and there will be
June_2014_Area_A.indd 59

Leeds Schools Get Active on the School Run A vital theme of the legacy programme for the Tour de France is to promote cycling to the next generation. Sustrans is working in partnership with Leeds City Council to run a programme of initiatives to increase levels of walking, cycling and public transport to schools in Horsforth, Rawdon, Garforth and Kippax. They are currently working with 16 primary and secondary schools and activities include installing cycle and scooter storage, delivering road safety training, producing local Active Travel Maps and running incentive schemes. Benton Park School in Rawdon now has one of the highest rates of pupils cycling to school in the city, with just seven out of more than 250 pupils in Year 7 now being taken to

school by car. A cycling culture has grown, their bike club attracts around 25 attendees each week, and cycling is now established in the PE curriculum. Leeds schools recently took part in the Sustrans national competition The Big Pedal with over 100,000 bike and scooter journeys being clocked up in Yorkshire schools alone. Next up is the Leeds Schools Active Travel Project, which includes Bike Week, Walk to School Week and a special Junior Tour De France day, coordinated by Leeds City Council. Five hundred primary school students will take part in scooter and cycle races to win jerseys before the Tour De France Grand Depart in July.

The club, which introduces about 1000 youngsters to golf to each year, is the 2014 winner of England Golf’s prestigious GolfMark Club of the Year award, an initiative which identifies junior and beginner-friendly clubs that have made an outstanding contribution to developing the game through a range of activities. “It’s great to know that the hard work of the team has been recognised”, said Ray Agar, Cookridge Hall Junior Organiser. “To achieve GolfMark you have to be a forward-thinking club, willing to listen to people.” Cookridge Hall encourages children as young as five and six to try golf. It has links with about 50 local schools, including one for children with special educational needs. Children are invited to the club for free coaching sessions and can then join the Academy, transferring to the junior section when they’re aged ten or eleven. A team of seven teaching professionals is involved – two of whom, Paul O’Donnell and Jonathan Pearson manage the

Academy, which currently has approximately 180 members aged between five and twelve, including 50 girls. “The team is great and very innovative”, said Cookridge Hall MD Adam Frontal. “People have ideas and are willing to put them into practice. Current initiatives include discussions with a local high school to set up and support a BTec course, and with a Leeds university to establish a golfrelated foundation degree course.” Craig Verrinder, Marketing Manager for COBRA PUMA GOLF who presented the award said: “Golf is changing and the ability to offer venues that are inclusive and fun for golfers of all abilities is key to enhancing golf participation in the community.” Richard Flint, England Golf, commented: “Cookridge Hall Golf Club is to be congratulated for its excellent work to attract and retain new golfers. They are flexible and welcoming and have created a really inclusive club.”

A new walk – the Wharfedale Three Peaks Challenge – takes place on Saturday 28th June. Leaving from Kettlewell, the walk was devised to promote the work of the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association (UWFRA), which needs to raise at least £40,000 each year to continue its life saving work in the Yorkshire Dales.
Greg Mulholland MP tackled the ‘alternative’ Three Peaks in advance, as part of his partnership with the British Mountaineering Council (BMC), to promote outdoor activities and help raise money for UWFRA. “It was great to try out the UWFRA Wharfedale Three Peaks route”, said Greg, who walked the 22 miles (35 kilometres), bagged three summits and climbed 1,450 metres (4,757 ft). “It was a challenging but very satisfying walk with great views and I can certainly recommend it. Kettlewell is a lovely place to start and finish and having the White Lion at Cray provided a welcome pit stop! “Everyone who takes part will

be supporting a wonderful, hardworking team of volunteers who provide mountain rescue 365 days a year and save people’s lives. All who enjoy the Yorkshire Dales rely on the service they provide. I don’t think people realise that they are all volunteers and are permanently on call.” Carey Davies, the BMC’s Hill Walking Development Officer, said: “It’s great to highlight how the hills and mountains can be fun, amazing places we can all enjoy. This was a great example of a perfect hill walk: beautiful views, adventure, challenge, a stop in a country pub and only 45 minutes of rain! “The Wharfedale Three Peaks is a wonderful alternative to the more famous Yorkshire Three.
This was a great example of a perfect hill walk: beautiful views, adventure, challenge, a stop in a country pub and only 45 minutes of rain!
The ‘established’ events are taking their toll on the fragile mountain environment and we want to encourage people to explore new places and possibilities.” As well as the 22 mile Three Peaks route, there are two easier routes – a 13.5 mile Two Peaks route including Buckden Pike and Great Whernside, and Starbotton Circular Walk, a 4.5 mile family and community route. Everyone will receive a certificate of completion and a hot meal, as well as an event souvenir. It’s great value at £10 per entry and £12 for a family of four. Whether you are a seasoned triathlete or taking on your first ever race, there really will be something for everyone. The triathlons are part of Alistair and Jonny’s drive to encourage people of all ages and abilities to take part in a sport that has given them so much enjoyment over the years. “Our first Brownlee Tri last year was amazing”, said Alistair. “To have the opportunity to grow the event this year is fantastic and hopefully people from all over Britain can get involved.” For more information about getting involved, visit www. brownleetri.com or www.facebook. com/brownleetriathlon
Following the success of last year’s Brownlee Tri, Alistair and Jonny Brownlee recently announced that registration was open for their 2014 triathlons. The Northern Brownlee Tri will be held at Harewood House on 21st September. Harewood provides not only a stunning setting, but also the opportunity to ride the same roads as the Tour de France earlier in the Summer. “I’m delighted that Jonny and Alistair Brownlee are coming to Harewood for the Brownlee Tri”, said David Lascelles, Earl of Harewood. “People have swum in the lake, run and cycled round the estate before, but I’m pretty sure none have done it as fast as the Brownlees! It will be a great challenge for the competitors

Greg Mulholland MP is urging local schools to get involved in the Anthony Nolan campaign ‘Register and Be a Lifesaver’ (R&Be) that educates young people aged 16 - 18 on the benefits of joining the blood, bone marrow and organ donor registers. Anthony Nolan is a charity that helps to save the lives of people with blood cancer by recruiting donors to its bone marrow register and matching them with patients in need of a transplant. The charity also works with NHS Blood and Transplant Service to deliver an education programme across the UK. Trained volunteers visit schools, dispelling myths and delivering the facts about blood

stem cell, bone marrow, blood and organ donation in an engaging, thought-provoking way. Since it was established in 2009, the R&Be team has reached over 122,000 students in more than 500 schools and colleges. Nearly 6,500 of these students have joined the Anthony Nolan bone marrow register as a result, and a remarkable eight young people have gone on to donate to a patient desperately in need of a transplant. Nearly 7,700 young people have been inspired to join the blood donor register, and over 2,500 have signed up as organ donors. “Volunteering to be a life-saving match for a stranger is a remarkable thing to do”, said Greg Mulholland. “Having worked with many schools in and around Leeds, I believe that, given the opportunity, our young people would want to know how they could help to save a life.” “We know that young people are the most likely to be chosen as donors so it’s very important that they know how they can potentially save a life”, said
Katie Day, R&Be Programme Lead at Anthony Nolan. “We hope that more local schools will sign up to our programme and help us to educate their students about becoming lifesavers.” For further information, email Jo Buckton, Regional Register Development Manager, at jo.buckton@anthonynolan.org or call 0303 303 0303.

Later this Summer, eight members of the Blacksheep explorer unit, Headingley, along with other Central Yorkshire County Scouts, will take part in a three week expedition to Morocco. During this trip, the group is expected to sleep outside with their own equipment. On arrival in Marrakech, they will drive to Imlil, a village at the foot of Jbel Toubkal (the tallest peak in the High Atlas mountains), where half of the group will begin an ascent. The mountain phase should take nine days. Some of the equipment will be carried on mules and some by the scouts. The rest of the group will observe village life and carry out tasks helpful to the villagers. On the

return of the mountain group, the roles will be reversed. Following this the scouts will travel to the village of El Borj, where they will help to renovate an old school, alongside the Children of the Sahara Foundation.
They will then undertake a three-day trek in the Sahara involving a camel caravan, with temperatures averaging 40-45 Celsius. Then it’s back to Marrakech for a couple of days before returning to the UK. What a trip! However, there is a significant cost to the expedition, in order to provide all the necessary equipment, food and local guides to ensure the trip is as sustainable as possible. The group has been busy raising funds through various activities. If you would like to help to equip them for this epic expedition, please send donations to Headingley Explorer Scouts, St. Chad’s Parish Centre, Otley Road, LS16 5JT - they will send you a postcard from Morocco!

Twenty Five young musicians from the Leeds Youth Jazz Rock Orchestra (LYJRO) recently staged a 12-hour music marathon at the Civic Hall in Leeds, to raise funds for music education in South African schools. The sponsored ‘playathon’ was LYJRO’s latest fundraising venture for the band’s Durban project, which has raised money for musical instruments and music teachers in the city since 2005. The band has been on two tours to Durban, and returns in July to play gigs with local musicians and deliver music

workshops for schoolchildren. “There is no established music provision in South African schools”, said bandleader Brendan Duffy. “Our members want to do what they can to provide some of the wonderful musical opportunities they enjoy here in Leeds. They fundraise year round and will see where
the money goes when we tour to South Africa in July this year.” In the last three years band members have raised around £16,000. LYJRO is a City of Leeds Youth Music/ArtForms ensemble, with members aged up to 19 from across the Leeds area. The band’s favourite way to fundraise is to play gigs, and they can be booked for events and parties For more information please contact: Rachel Cockburn on 07986 107208, rachelmcockburn@gmail. com, or Brendan Duffy at brendanduffy@talktalk.net, or visit www.lyjro.org.uk

Nevaeh, who only began learning the violin at the start of Year 4 as part of the school’s on-going free programme, which provides violin tuition for all children in that year group, played very confidently and without a hint of nerves.
The judges were Councillor Sue Bentley, Diana Mann (Headteacher), Jon Burnside (School Business Manager) and David Vasquez (musician). The competition is organised by the school’s attendance officer, Daniel Wilson, and HLTA, supported by a team of staff who performed their own show stopping performance. “We are very proud of Nevaeh”, said head
