FRANK HARRIS FULFORD (1868-1943) BUSINESSMAN, MUSICIAN, PATRON OF THE ARTS
Frank Fulford led a double life. For over 30 years he was managing director of the Leeds-based company supplying the hugely popular and aggressively promoted patent medicines, Bile Beans (pills) and Zambuk (ointment), a business tainted by accusations of quackery. In his private life, he was a dedicated amateur musician, a generous patron of the arts, and a discriminating collector of objects of beauty, some of which he gave to enrich his adopted home city of Leeds. He was in his early thirties when he arrived in Leeds in 1902 from Canada, with his wife and three children. He had come to set up the UK end of the booming patent medicine business founded in Australia in 1897 by his younger brother Charles Edward, who concocted ‘Bile Beans for Biliousness’, supposedly from a secret native recipe discovered by an eminent scientist – all a myth! Phenomenal sales were achieved through door-to-door leafleting, free gifts, and blanket advertising in the popular press, featuring emotive personal stories of miraculous, life-changing cures, presented as news items. Charles was following in the footsteps of his uncle in Canada who had made millions marketing Dr Williams’ Pink Pills for Pale People, a commercial and advertising sensation around the world. Now Charles wanted to expand into the British market with Bile Beans and his other ‘secret’ remedy, Zambuk ointment. His elder brother Frank was called in. Frank had originally envisaged

MG Plastering Wins Paphitis Tweet! On Sunday evenings Theo Paphitis of Dragons’ Den fame runs a competition on Twitter called Small Business Sunday. To enter, businesses have to send a tweet to @TheoPaphitis between 5 & 7:30 pm using the hashtag #SBS. Theo reads the entries and selects his six favourites to retweet to his 415,000 followers.
The Lifelong Learning Centre at the University of Leeds is an important resource for adults who wish to return to study for a degree or those interested in just learning for pleasure. We have featured the Centre’s Spring into Summer programme in North Leeds Life for the last four years and it has proved very popular. The 2014 programme is shaping up to be very exciting too, particularly the free evening seminars on Women and the First World War and what promises to be a day full of argument and debate about the Scottish Referendum! The Centre delivers a range of flexible full and part-time undergraduate courses. Parttime degrees are available in Arabic and Islamic Studies, Business Studies, Family Support and Teaching and Learning and entry requirements are flexible. In addition, they offer an interdisciplinary degree and ‘extended degree’ pathways onto programmes taught elsewhere in the university.

The Centre delivers a range of flexible full and part-time courses
There are also programmes tailored to preparing adults for Higher Education opportunities. Prospective students, who are unsure of what they want to do, can access a free Advice and Guidance service to talk through options. Student feedback consistently mentions the high quality teaching and excellent student support at the Lifelong Learning Centre. The centre is currently offering very generous financial packages, so it’s well worth your while finding out more! Call 0113 343 6892.
One Sunday recently, Michael Gwynn of MG Plastering tweeted “We help our clients finish their projects to high standards & on deadline” and was lucky enough to be one of Theo’s winning six. “We’ve been inundated with enquiries since winning”, said Michael. “It’s great that Theo is helping support UK businesses in this way. The initial response was overwhelming. That evening my phone didn’t stop ringing until midnight and then started again the following morning! My Twitter followers increased by hundreds, our website hits went through the roof and we’ve been inundated with enquiries ever since. I’d definitely recommend other businesses to enter the competition as the exposure your company will receive if your tweet is chosen is amazing.”

CARE VISITS AT HOME Declare your Independence
If you struggle to get yourself out of bed in the morning, or just can’t fasten your shoelaces as easily as you used to, it doesn’t mean you need to start looking for a care home – all you need is a helping hand. Sometimes a little bit of help can dramatically improve your quality of life and enable you to maintain your independence and continue to enjoy living in the comfort of your own home. Bluebird Care is available to any adult who needs specific help with everyday tasks around the home. These may include help getting in and out of bed or getting dressed, preparing meals, shopping, washing and ironing, personal hygiene, cleaning, and helping with mobility issues. Bluebird Care normally involves one or more visits a day for relatively short periods, possibly up to an hour, to help with everyday tasks. Longer visits are also available, including overnight help or even live-in care. “People are looking for the best quality care for themselves or their loved ones but they need to know they are getting value for money”, said David Brown, Director of Bluebird Care in North Leeds. “At Bluebird Care we provide what people want and carefully measure the way we deliver care. We train, monitor and supervise our staff closely and effectively, and ensure that all staff members have the right temperament and attitude. We will only deliver care at the level we would expect for our own relatives. That way we know we have got it right!” Quality Care should be all about maintaining people’s independence and confidence, not taking it away. “Everyone is unique, and our care packages are tailored to suit each person’s specific requirements, promoting independence and ensuring dignity and respect for the individual”, said David. Bluebird Care’s helping hand enables people to continue to appreciate life, without having to struggle with those little things.

A new photographic exhibition ‘Yorkshire Made Me’ opens at Yorkshire Sculpture Park on Saturday 29th March and runs until Sunday 1st June. It features 37 of Yorkshire’s best known faces, all of whom are passionate about being Yorkshire born and bred and it is accompanied by a gorgeous book of the portraits. The idea came to Jennifer Robertson and Lynne Fletcher of award-winning Kyte Photography as they listened to Liz Green interviewing the great and good from Yorkshire on BBC Radio Leeds’ ‘One on One’ show. They heard her interview with Nicola Adams two years before she won Olympic Gold, and it got them thinking about how many other inspirational Yorkshire people there were about. They made a list and over the next three years approached them all sometimes several times! Dame Judi Dench was filming ‘Skyfall’ when they first called but some months later they were being served tea and cake in Dame Judi’s kitchen! As the project got underway they found they were being recommended to people – Leslie Garrett recommended that Jim Carter (of Downton Abbey fame) get involved. “Everyone was so lovely and welcoming”, said Lynne. “There were no bells and whistles, no stylists, no special lighting. We just asked for people to choose a favourite place to be photographed.” Obviously William Hague and Betty Boothroyd chose the Houses of Parliament. Duncan

Victorian Pier. Patrick Stewart’s choice was Emley Moor, and Kiki Dee was photographed at The Alhambra in Bradford where she won a talent competition when she was just 16, before becoming the first British woman to be signed to the Motown label. “It took time and perseverance, but it was worth every second”, said Jennifer. “We had a fabulous day with David Hockney at his home; Helen Sharman, the first Briton in space, was fascinating to talk to; Michael Palin kept us in stitches; and we photographed Brian Robinson, who was the first

Briton to win a stage of the Tour de France long before Wiggo was even a twinkle in his mother’s eye, on his 84th birthday!” ‘Yorkshire Made Me’ is a true celebration of ‘God’s Own County’. The exhibition honours its remarkable people and amazing beauty; from the rolling hills of the Dales, to ancient cobbled streets steeped in history. What comes across most powerfully is that no matter how far Yorkshire men and women go, in distance or stardom, they are forever shaped by their place of birth and are intensely proud to belong. Opera North’s Switch ON team has been running weekly sessions at St George’s Crypt since last November. Run by Switch ON artistic director Jen
Take a Walk on the Wilde Side with Adel Players
Heyes, alongside composer John Browne, and vocal coach Lea Cornthwaite, the sessions encourage composing, singing and acting; whilst also building self-esteem, teamwork and interpersonal skills.
“Week on week, we are witnessing the positive impact of music on those attending the Switch ON sessions”, said Jen Heyes. “Through a combination of learning, singing selected pieces from existing operas, developing voice and drama skills, and devising our own original material, Switch ON is building an exciting body of work. Most attendees have never done anything quite like this before but their

passion, curiosity and power of imagination are amazing.” A trip to see Opera North’s performance of The Girl of the Golden West was a new experience for many. This particular opera was chosen as the group had learnt one of the ensemble pieces, which added to the experience. There are plans to attend La Bohème, at the Grand Theatre in May.
A comic masterpiece comes to Adel Memorial Hall from 23rd-26th April when Adel Players perform Oscar Wilde’s ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. One of the most cherished plays in the English language, this Victorian ‘rom-com’ is renowned for its fast-paced dialogue and witty use of language. In addition, Wilde manages to satirise every aspect of the society that closeted him, hoisted him and eventually destroyed him. From the repartee of Algernon and Jack to the hilarious utterings of Lady Bracknell, ‘Earnest’ remains a bona fide classic almost 120 years after its first performance. Adel Players last staged the play in October 1966 Harold Wilson was Prime Minister, the Beatles had just released ‘Revolver’ and England had been recently crowned World Cup winners! Tickets (£8) for ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ are available from 0113 275 5585, or via www.adel-players. org.uk

The Leeds Pals Written by Stephen Wood from Pudsey, The Leeds Pals is the story of the Leeds Volunteers who went to War in 1914
Over the past four years Leeds Museums and Galleries have been working in partnership with St. James’ Hospital, curating exhibitions for The Atrium in the Bexley Wing. Each Spring sees a new display, featuring a variety of objects from anthropology collections to fine and decorative works of art, from social history to natural science specimens. This partnership enables Leeds Museums and Galleries to reach new audiences and exhibit artefacts outside their traditional contexts, and contributes to the wellbeing of St James’

Bexley Wing users. This year’s exhibition brings together a mixture of objects from all over the world, including games from Africa, Greek wine jugs, and Giant Snails from South Africa. Called ‘Small Pleasures’ this display was put together by Heather Mikhail, a Heritage Lottery funded curatorial trainee. It explores the small pleasures of life, from video games and bird watching, to a nice cup of tea!
At 07.30am on 1st July 1916, the men of the 15th Battalion, The Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire Regiment), better known as the Leeds Pals, left their positions in a series of copses named after the Gospels and advanced towards the village of Serre, near Bapaume, in the Somme Valley, only to be met by heavy German machine gun fire, suffering over 500 casualties in a few minutes. Recruited from volunteers in the heady days of September 1914 following Lord Kitchener’s call to arms and trained at Colsterdale in the Yorkshire Dales, the battalion was initially deployed to Egypt to defend the Suez Canal before being sent to France in March 1916 to join the build-up for the Battle of the Somme as part of 31st Division, along with other famous Pals Battalions from Yorkshire and Lancashire. Stephen and his father Mike run a website devoted to the Leeds Pals which includes information donated by friends and relatives of the pals and personal case-histories of named soldiers, local history and military documents. The book is the latest title in Amberley Publishing’s Military History range is available from all good bookshops (£14.99). It is also available in Kindle, Kobo and iBook formats. A composition by Headingleybased composer Tim Knight has been nominated for Classic FM’s Hall of Fame.
Pictured: Tim Knight
The piece, ‘Elegy for an English Summer’ was written for small orchestra in 2006 and was recorded by the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Tim, who is principal of the Yorkshire College of Music and Drama, also conducts Leeds Male Voice Choir, the Heritage Singers, and the Masterworks Chorale, and is a widely published composer whose music has received widespread performances both here and abroad.
“I am delighted that this piece has been nominated”, said Tim, “not only because it is one of mine, but also because it’s good to see music by living composers amongst the top 300 pieces available to vote for. Although this piece has been performed overseas, it has yet to have its English premiere!” Voting closes just before Easter and the top 300 pieces will be played on Classic FM over the Easter weekend, if any local orchestra would like to see the score, please contact Tim on timknightmusic@hotmail.co.uk

The lives and loves of a group of young bohemians in Paris return to Leeds Grand Theatre from Tuesday 29th April - Saturday 10 May with Opera North’s production of one of the most popular operas of all time – La Boheme. Directed by multi awardwinning theatre, opera and film director Phyllida Lloyd (Mamma Mia, The Iron Lady), this production updates the original setting to the late 1950s, a time when art, music and philosophy reigned in Paris. Anthony Ward’s atmospheric set designs vividly convey the hustle and bustle of the Parisian streets and the Left Bank cafes and clubs, giving full expression

to the joy, wit and frivolity of student life. La Bohème follows the romance between Rodolfo, a young artist, and Mimi, a seamstress. Falling deeply in love following a chance meeting, tragic circumstances force the couple apart. Puccini’s music weaves a web of glorious melody throughout, speaking directly to the heart in some of the most beautiful music in opera, including Rodolfo’s great declaration of love and his famous duet with Mimi, “O soave fanciulla” (Oh, lovely girl). The production is double
cast, with sopranos Gabriela Iştoc and Anita Watson sharing the role of Mimi, and tenors Sebastien Gueze and Ji-Min Park performing as Rodolfo. They are joined by Sky Ingram and Lorna James as Musetta, and Phillip Rhodes and Duncan Rock as Marcello, with the Orchestra of Opera North conducted by Andreas Delfs and Ilyich Rivas.

After taking the West End by storm last year, burlesque musical ‘Miss Nightingale’ comes to City Varieties this month. The show follows northern songbird Maggie and her Jewish composer, George, as they struggle to find their big break. She longs for stardom and the high life. He wants to bring a bit of his beloved Berlin to Blighty. Everything changes when they are picked up by wealthy man about town, Sir Frank Worthington-Blythe, who needs an act to launch his new nightclub. Maggie is transformed into Music Hall star ‘Miss Nightingale’ and her outrageous outfits, satirical songs and scandalous love life make her the toast of London. But away from the showbiz glamour, heartache and secrets threaten to change their lives
forever. Saucy humour spotlights a moving tale of love, loss and hope. The original songs, from tongue-in-cheek numbers to tender ballads, perfectly capture the style and spirit of the Forties. ‘Miss Nightingale’ is at City Varieties from Thursday 24th – Sunday 27th April. Tickets £16.60 from 0113 243 0808, cityvarieties.co.uk

It is exactly 150 years since Leeds became an ‘Assize town’ and the High Court moved in. On Friday 16th May, the Town Hall will open its courtroom for a special Charity Gala Performance of ‘Trial By Jury’ by the Leeds Gilbert and Sullivan Society. The performance is sponsored by Headingley Rotary Club, in aid of Leeds Foodbanks. Gilbert based his operetta on a comic sketch. Impresario Richard D’Oyly Carte suggested he work with Arthur Sullivan and their first collaboration was an instant success. The plot involves a learned judge trying a breach of Promise of Marriage. Edwin, the plaintiff, is being sued by Angelina. The judge entertains the court with a song outlining his dubious rise to distinction. The jury is sworn in and Edwin is called. His
defence is simple: that a chap should be allowed to change his mind and, since he is a violent, drunken cad, she is well shot of him. With the entry of the stunningly beautiful Angelina in her wedding dress, all the men in the court go weak at the knees. A feeble-minded usher suggests that since Edwin is violent when drunk “Let’s make him tipsy, gentlemen, and try”. Uproar ensues, ending only when the judge throws his papers in the air and comes to judgement. Exactly how, you can find out on Friday 16th May. The performance lasts just 40 minutes (benches a bit hard – you might like to take a cushion!). There is a Gala Reception at 6.30pm,
followed by the show at 7pm (£15). There will be a second performance at 8.30pm (£12). Tickets available from The Carriageworks Box Office on 0113 224 3801

For the past eight years Dan Clark has worked as an accountant then Operations Manager for a lighting wholesalers in Cross Green. Having taken film studies at Sheffield Hallam, with minors in scriptwriting and creative writing, he found himself thinking more and more about writing a book. Living in North Leeds, he took up long distance running and quickly started to formulate his book. It took around 18 months to write and a further year to edit and re-edit. “I wrote a detailed synopsis and sent it to various publishers and literary agents – as advised on many forums and websites”, said Dave. “The most notable thing
about publishing houses and literary agents is that most of them don’t even have the good grace to reject you! They simply don’t reply, which is disheartening. “Eventually I got a rejection letter, with some helpful criticism. Following this, I began to look into self-publishing ebooks. Ideally, I would have liked to see an actual bound, paper copy of my book but I decided that I’d rather my book be accessible for everyone to read and enjoy a tiny fee rather than spend years finding a publisher only for nobody to buy it anyway!” ‘Stanley Kotep in: An Unexpected Turn of Events’ is about an ordinary man with an extraordinary way of thinking. Working in a computer games distribution company he believes he is destined for nothing more than a quiet life. Then he receives a message asking whether he’d like to know more about his sister…but he doesn’t have a sister! He’s lead on an incredible journey from Peckham to the United States and everywhere in between. Aided by an ancient order of knights, he finds himself on the run from the shadowy and deadly Organisation, a secret army
of men in suits hell-bent on killing him. It is a quirky tale, suitable for all ages, from teenagers upwards and is available from Amazon and Smashwords.

I first saw Mandy Long’s sculptures at an exhibition at Leeds Town Hall to celebrate the 2013 Rugby League World Cup coming to Leeds and the achievements of the Leeds Rhinos, who have been such an inspiration for her as an artist. The exhibition, organised by Leeds Rugby Arts (Leeds Rugby Foundation), was sponsored by Leeds City Council and Leeds Inspired.
lthough Mandy had done evening courses and, as she says, ‘bits-and-bobs’ over the years, she had always thought of her sculpture as a hobby. It wasn’t until she and her family moved to Leeds in 1999 that she decided, after years of teaching, to start taking it seriously. She took a BTEC in Ceramics and 3D Design at Harrogate College and never looked back. Drawn into the worlds of football and rugby by her sons, she soon started noticing how balletic it could be. Using a
April _2014_Area_A.indd 24
paper-clay process, which entails making a wire armature, then padding out the form in paper before adding the clay, she creates figures that celebrate the dynamics of movement and physicality in sport. The sculpture goes through a biscuit firing first when the paper burns out leaving a wonderfully light sculpture. It is then Raku fired, which gives it its distinctive black and white finish. Her sculptures capture the game. Her figures are players in action, moments frozen in time.
Initially inspired by football, the raw energy and passion of the players, their phenomenal balance, and the unrehearsed grace of their movement, she soon moved on to rugby and contemporary dance, capturing the movement, strength and grace of the dancers and sportspeople. Today Mandy sells her sculptures through galleries all over the country, from Newcastle’s Biscuit Factory and Knaresborough’s Art in the Mill to the Isles of Scilly. To see more of her work, visit www.mandylong. com The Leeds Rugby Foundation is the official charity of both Leeds Rhinos (Rugby League) and Leeds Carnegie (Rugby Union) providing activities and projects for development and wellbeing for local communities across the city in sport, health, education and arts projects. Leeds Rugby Arts, chaired by Doug Sandle, is a programme of arts activities developed for the Leeds Rhinos.

I suppose the exciting thing about Dough Bistro is that it is always changing! It started out as Dough Bakery, which morphed into Dough Deli, which in turn became Dough Bistro!
It all comes down to Luke Downing’s passion for food and trying out new tastes and combinations. There is no standing still! The menu changes every month. When we dropped in recently we had a choice of a two course menu for £22, a four course for £ 27, or a seven course taster menu for £40! Tempting though it was we decided that the seven courses might defeat us, so we opted for the four. This evening of culinary delights started out with a little cup of delicious Mushroom Forestiere soup with lovely homemade bread. This was followed by Pine Smoked Salmon with asparagus, watercress, mixed bean and artichoke salad, prawns and mustard dressing; and Seared Whitby Scallops with
April _2014_Area_A.indd 30
sauted potato, apricot and pear salsa and Grassington ham crisps. Then a little Grapefruit and Mint Sorbet appeared….and disappeared. For main courses we chose Swordfish with a wonderfully fresh and tasty salsa verde, Whitby crab croquette, saffron mayonnaise and balsamic syrup; and Pork tenderloin with homemade black pudding, tiger prawns, mashed potato and rhubarb puree – adding sides of sweet

potato chips with goat’s cheese and chorizo and some veg. What was really lovely was the element of surprise. I never would have put pork and prawns together but it worked so well. The same with the mixed bean salad and smoked salmon. The crab croquette was not an after-thought, it was a definite flavour statement. The goat’s cheese really complemented the sweet potato chips. You didn’t rush through this food – you savoured every bite, wondering what you were going to encounter next. Of course, every restaurant likes to boast that they use local produce but Dough takes that a step further – Luke actually has his own allotment in Roundhay! If he doesn’t have what he needs there, he also has a plot at Swillington Farm. As I mentioned, Dough never stands still….. there are changes afoot. There’s a new Early Bird menu (£13.95 for two courses, £17.95 for three), new signage, an extended bar area with nice comfy seating where you can just drop in and have a drink and enjoy the new bar menu, and even a takeaway menu. So keep your eyes open, Dough is rising to new challenges. Dough Bistro, 293 Spen Lane LS16 5BD. Tel: 0113 278 7255.

Tuesday 29th April marks the start of the public enquiry into what is now being referred to as the Leeds Trolley Vehicle System Order – in other words the NGT Trolleybus scheme.
Let’s Look at the Meanwood Valley Scotland Mill One of the most interesting sites in the Meanwood Valley is Scotland Mill. Built at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, it was acquired by John Marshall, the son of a Leeds
Further information was released by NGT on 30th January, which included an updated business case, together with traffic modelling information – a lot of documents. Careful examination of these reveals some disturbing insights into what the proposed trolleybus system will bring to Leeds in 2020, if it goes ahead. For instance, the models predict that, with NGT, public transport passenger miles will actually fall – the trolleybus will drive people away from both buses and the trolleybus. Indeed the models predict that traffic congestion will be worse and fuel consumption will go up. They also show that the NGT revenues are very sensitive to assumptions about fare
The proposers claim that the benefits of NGT outweigh the damage that it does to the environment and streetscape!
levels – remember the Council has undertaken to underwrite trolleybus running costs. Despite all this, the proposers claim that the benefits of NGT outweigh the damage that it does to the environment and streetscape! Let us hope that good Yorkshire common sense will prevail and, despite the millions of pounds already spent, the trolleybus scheme will be consigned to the history books along with other examples such as APT, the Advanced Passenger Train (the tilting train), and the Sinclair C5 (the battery powered tricycle). linen draper in 1788. A man of vision, he could see that modern technology could be used to speed up the many processes that were needed to turn newly cut flax into high quality fibre for spinning and weaving. An astute businessman, he had a powerful waterwheel to power the mill, but he wasn’t an engineer. By coincidence, a young mechanic, who had walked from Stockton-on-Tees looking for work, was directed to Scotland Mill. His name was Matthew Murray and he was soon able to solve John’s problem. It soon became obvious that water power was being overtaken by steam, and to make steam you needed coal. Two things were essential for industrial development – power and access. Meanwood had neither. So, in 1701 he transferred the business to Holbeck and made his fortune. He died a very rich man in 1845. Scotland Mill had many uses, including flax milling, paper making and wool spinning. In 1906 the mill was gutted by fire and there is little to be seen today. But the observant passer-by will be able to see signs of the dam, the large stones that carried the machinery and the wheel pit.

Strictly Come Volunteering
Joseph and his family
Older Wiser Local Seniors (OWLS) and students from Leeds Metropolitan University recently held their annual volunteer party at the Great Hall on Headingley Campus.
There will be an Easter Family Fun Day and Welly Walk in Golden Acre Park, Otley Road, from 10am – 4pm on Saturday 19th April. The event will feature an Easter trail around the lake, a larger than life Easter chick, Easter crafts, planting vegetables, face painting, hook-a-duck, new and nearly new toys, a fantastic raffle and all the fun of the fair! The Welly Walk is a lighthearted, fun, sponsored event. The organisers are currently recruiting walkers - all they ask is that you raise £10 in sponsorship. The event is in aid of Joseph Lillywhite (6) who was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer, a year ago. He has undergone numerous stays in hospital and unpleasant treatment, and is on the third cycle of chemotherapy.

There is no further treatment available in the UK, hence the fundraising for treatment abroad, which is very expensive. For more details, please contact hello@josephlillywhite. co.uk If you’d like to take part in the sponsored walk, just turn up on the day to join the fun! Meanwood Village Association has organised a concert featuring Elland Silver Band at Meanwood Methodist Church on Saturday 5th April, 7.30pm, also in aid of Joseph and the Neuroblastoma Cancer Charity. The band will perform ‘Music from Around the World’. Tickets (£5) available from J. Brewer 0113 274 1449, A. Burgess 0113 275 8421 or P. Bewell 0113 275 5415
The student volunteers were crucial in making this year’s party one of the best yet. They were treated to a ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ themed evening, with students and older generation OWLS volunteers pairing up to enter this fun, tongue-incheek contest. There were three rounds – Waltz, Foxtrot and Rumba –each being introduced and presented by professional dancers Paul Harris (80) and his partner Pam Sheen (71) who took part in the Champions of Tomorrow competition at the Winter Gardens, Blackpool, in January, scooping two third and two fourth places! Congratulations to Maureen Morant and her student partner, Rachel, who won the glitter cup trophy! “The event was amazing from start to finish”, said Lee Ingham, OWLS Manager. “This is a fantastic example of community cohesion, generations together, and a showcase for volunteering.” OWLS supports older people in Burley, Hyde Park, Little Woodhouse, Headingley and parts of Kirkstall. Staff and volunteers work to ensure that the older members of the community get the most out of life. If you are interested in joining OWLS as a member or a volunteer, please contact OWLS on 0113 236 1644.

Volunteers from Leeds University Union, together with Hyde Park Source and Leeds Coppice Workers, recently went coppicing in local woodland to improve sustainability. Using this ancient technique of woodland management, students helped to improve biodiversity in the woods. Their participation was key to developing the sustainability of the woodland and improving the local environment. “Working with students from Leeds Uni was great for us”, said a Leeds Coppice Workers’ representative. “We achieved a lot during the day and the students were hard working and interested in what we had to say about the woods.”
This is a great example of how the local area can benefit when students and charities work together
“As a traditional method of managing woodland areas, coppicing is very sustainable and it’s great that we could work with local charities to ensure that the knowledge is shared and the woodland is kept healthy”,
commented Frankie O’Byrne , community officer at Leeds University Union. “This is a great example of how the local area can benefit when students and charities work together.”

St Vincent Support Centre is celebrating its 18th anniversary in style with a glittering Spring Ball at the Leeds Marriot Hotel on 26th April.
Otley Courthouse Memories Group Launches ‘Timeline’ Otley Courthouse Memories Group received Heritage Lottery funding to create a ‘Timeline’, which would be a permanent record of Otley Courthouse and its changing role through the years.
Pictured: ponsored by Northern Gas Networks, the Spring Ball promises to be a fun and memorable night where guests can enjoy a sparkling drinks’ reception, sumptuous dinner, grand raffle and auction, as well as dancing and live music. “This is a great way to celebrate the achievements of the charity and the difference we’ve made to so many people’s lives”, said Charlotte Walton, Centre Manager. “We are very fortunate to have loyal and generous supporters and the evening is an opportunity to thank them as well as raise funds. The recent recession hit us hard financially at a time when desperate families needed us most. This ball is to

The launch of the ‘Timeline’ takes place on Saturday 3rd May, 11am – 2.30pm, coinciding with the tenth anniversary weekend of the Courthouse’s transformation into an arts centre. The event will include Courthouse stories with a storyteller; opportunities to have fingerprints and mugshots taken; visits to the Victorian cellblock; brass rubbings, and much more. Display boards record a factual and pictorial history of the building and significant events, including people’s memories, archive records, newspaper reports, photographs etc. They will also showcase the art centre’s previous life as Otley’s Fire Station, Police Headquarters, Magistrates Court and police cells, as well as it being a location for the filming of ‘Heartbeat’.

News From Your Councillors CLLR CLIVE FOX Adel & Wharfedale Ward
It’s that time of year when council tax bills flutter through our letter boxes inviting us to make our contribution towards the £565 million that Leeds will spend this year. It’s only a 1.99% increase, so maybe we should be thankful for small mercies. It could have been 1.9999% infinitely recurring.
The report explains what a good job the Council has done

Adel Neighbourhood Design Statement The Adel Neighbourhood Design Statement has been rewritten and updated since it was originally produced in 2006 and, in order to get the revisions approved, the Statement must undergo public consultation., This will last from 1st April to 31st May. You can access the document electronically on Leeds City Council’s website (let me know if you have difficulty accessing it). There should also be copies
April _2014_Area_A.indd 38
The Statement must undergo public consultation
The reason is the government decreed that any increase of 2% or more would require a referendum, an expensive exercise, and it’s just possible the good citizens of Leeds might have said ‘No’. Generous as ever, the government had earlier offered to cover the cost of a 1% increase, effectively freezing it for another year. However the city fathers in their wisdom decided there was no way they could possibly manage without the extra 0.9% over and above what the government was offering. The vast budget report explains what a good job the Council has done and, more to the point, what an even better job it’s going to do next time round notwithstanding a chronic affliction known as budget pressures. By page 34 the report reassures us that the 2012 Commission for the Future of Local Government is still central to its thinking. That leads them to continue to use the five propositions contained therein
to set the budget direction. On the very next page for some reason the five propositions appear to have become six. Now I don’t need to remind you what those six Best Council Objectives are all about. I do? Oh very well then. They cover things like ensuring high quality public services, being a child friendly city, delivering better lives, being an efficient and enterprising council, promoting economic growth and dealing effectively with the city’s waste. Quite how dealing with waste made its way into the top six remains something of a mystery, but there you are. With the increase in council tax you might expect that those top six spending priorities would be getting their share of any increase. In fact, each is suffering budget cuts amounting in total to over £20m. It’s an odd way to be running a council.

separately signalled right turn from the airport every other cycle. The time gained will allow a Leeds to Pool right turn indicative arrow. This may need to be every other cycle as well, depending on traffic. On cycles where the arrow is not lit, people can still turn right as they do now. It is possible that we may be able to provide a short right turn arrow every cycle, but we will only really know if this is possible when we see how the new arrangement works in practice. To implement this, a few details in the design will need to change – the stage order, move the airport approach stop line, possibly re-cut the detection loops, and erect the new arrow signal. It may be another three months before this can be scheduled in.
Dyneley Arms Traffic Signalling - Update I have been working with Highways officers to find a solution to the traffic issues at this junction – most notably a right turn filter to Pool from the A660. The Urban Traffic Manager recently informed me that they had found a way to relieve this queue, without compromising the safety improvements implemented a few years ago. The plan is to run the

Brain tumours
Member of Parliament for Leeds North West Health has been the unintentional focus on some of my work in Parliament recently. In the last month I’ve been involved in two notable campaigns which aim to raise awareness of and improve health services. Working with Mind, the mental health charity, I tabled a parliamentary motion calling for better access to and higher standards for mental health therapies. Changes that desperately need to be made include the introduction of maximum waiting time, and a guarantee that a full range of
evidence-based psychological therapies will be on offer to everyone who needs them within 28 days of requesting a referral. Currently, one in ten people will have to wait for over a year for access to psychological therapies, and three out of five are not given a choice in the therapy they are offered. Further funding has been committed by the Government to increase access to mental health therapies already. But, I believe more should be done, which would undoubtedly result in fewer patients needing more

costly crisis care at a later stage. I have also backed the ‘HeadSmart: Be Brain Tumour Aware’ campaign, which is raising awareness of the symptoms of brain tumours in children and young people. Brain tumours are the biggest cancer killer of children in the UK, with more than 500 diagnoses each year. The current average time to diagnose childhood brain tumours is 6.9 weeks. HeadSmart would like this to be reduced to five weeks or less. I have written to all the schools in my constituency to ask them to distribute symptom cards to pupils and parents. These are just two of the many campaigns I am actively involved in. You can sign up to my fortnightly email updates by visiting www.gregmulholland. org

Headingley doesn’t have a great deal of green space, so Councillor Neil Walshaw and I are constantly striving to improve what little we have. I’m really pleased that we have been able to identify funding, in association with Leeds City Council’s Planning and Parks and Countryside Services, to improve the Rose Garden on North Lane. The project cost is £22,988 and is funded though Section 106 Developer Contributions. The works will include:
The work includes the installation of an electrical point- a huge bonus for the Farmers’ Market.
• Supply and installation of
an electrical point- a huge bonus for the Farmers’ Market. • Removal of existing shrubbery and planting of new herbaceous plants in the existing beds. • Laying of turf in existing grassed areas. • Installation of ornate metal fencing on existing low level stone wall. To best reflect community needs, Neil and I consulted with Headingley Farmers’ Market/ Headingley Development Trust, Headingley in Bloom and the local community. The project was also placed on ‘Talking Point’ – the Council’s online public consultation tool to give everyone the opportunity to comment. I would like to thank everyone who took the time and trouble to liaise with us.

Adel Neighbourhood Forum has been told by Leeds City Council and Planning Aid England, that its community consultation is one of its strengths. It needs to build on this strength, particularly as it gets closer to producing a draft Neighbourhood Plan proposal. In the first phase two consultation days were held, and a community survey produced, with funding from the Outer North West Area Committee. A critical issue will be the capacity of local schools to cope with an increased demand resulting from housing development. Leeds Children’s Services have asked the Forum to work with them to arrange an ‘outcomes based’ exercise, where they will try to come up with possible solutions for the area, a starting point being to identify a potential site for a

DPM represents a small but Almost 30 years ago a group of professional actors in Leeds decided to form their own agency and represent themselves – so the Direct Personal Management Cooperative (DPM) was born. In July 2013 the agency moved into Duke Studios at Munro House in the centre of the vibrant arts quarter of Leeds and continues to thrive. DPM represents a small but select group of 29 experienced actors, with a wide range of ages and skills, who work both nationally and internationally. Current DPM members have appeared with some of the best
known names in the business, many have worked in the West End and several are also writers and directors. Members do not just have to be first rate actors but must also understand the biz side of showbiz as the office is run by them. This means that they do everything including negotiating contracts, submitting each other for jobs and running the agency as efficiently as any commercial agent. For such a small agency it has an impressive list of actors’ credits including parts in productions such as ‘Emmerdale’, ‘DCI Banks’, ‘The Syndicate’, ‘Life on Mars’ and ‘The League of Gentlemen’. One member is in the forthcoming Johnny Depp film ‘London Fields’ and another is currently appearing in Opera North’s ‘Macbeth’ as Duncan. Following a number of incidents involving cars failing to stop at the zebra crossing on Tongue Lane, Meanwood, parents at St Urban’s School began a campaign to lower the speed limit outside the schools on Tongue Lane, including St Urban’s Primary, Cardinal Heenan High School, Pennyfields School and Milestones Nursery. The PTA is now urging parents and child minders to be extra vigilant and teach children to wait for cars to stop on both sides before attempting to cross, and, if a car fails to stop at the crossing, to take their number and contact the police. Currently the speed limit is 30 mph. The Council has plans to introduce 20mph zones outside all schools, prioritising those identified as being higher risk. The introduction of the lower speed limit will slow traffic down and help drivers to be more aware of children crossing. Councillor Sharon Hamilton advised the PTA that they would need to campaign in order to make Tongue Lane a priority. The group has been busy and has already raised a deputation to present its case to the full Council, which will be heard on 26th March at the Civic Hall. It would also like to see safety measures introduced at the roundabout at the top of Church Lane and on down the hill. The left turn onto Parkside Road is a blind corner and there is the issue of speeding all the way down Church Lane. There is currently no safe place to cross. Things to Enjoy in the April Garden
Keep Your Garden Looking Good
With beautiful pink and white blossom in the trees and brightly coloured bulbs such as Narcissi and Tulips growing beneath, our gardens are beginning to look glorious! There are delicious food plants to harvest too, including Rhubarb and Sprouting Broccoli. Most of our region’s splendid gardens open their gates in April, so it is a perfect time to get out and pick up some ideas and inspiration. York Gate and Stillingfleet Lodge are two of my favourites as they are both small enough to feel homely and full of good ideas that you can adapt to your own garden. They both sell homegrown plants too.
The grass is growing and your lawn will need regular trims from now on. Make sure you are gentle with it and only cut off a little for the first few cuts of the season. Cutting once a fortnight is usually sufficient this month. It is time to prune back stems of Cornus, Willow and Rubus grown for their coloured bark. Taking them right back to just a few inches above ground level encourages new growth for good colour next Winter. You can use the Cornus twigs as supports for tall border plants like Delphiniums and Lupins and this is the perfect time to put them in place before the plants are taller than knee

Sow and Plant Once temperatures rise above 6˚C the soil should be warm enough to plant certain seeds directly into the soil where you want them to grow. These include Nigella, Larkspur, Calendula and Sunflowers as well as Beetroot, Lettuce, Radishes and Carrots. The seed potatoes that you have sprouting on the windowsill can be planted out this month. If you don’t have much space you can plant them in bucket sized containers. Just three per container will give you a good crop later in the Summer.

Home improvement specialists, The Passmore Group, is a family run business that was set up in 1965 by husband and wife team, Brian and Kathleen Passmore. Nearly 50 years on it is still a family business run by Brian and Kathleen’s sons Tony and Steve, who have worked in the company for over 30 years. The ‘Go To’ Experts True to the vision of the original founders, Tony and Steve’s aim is to make The Passmore Group the ‘go to’ experts for all home improvement works in and around Leeds. In 2011 Passmores underwent a complete rebranding to facilitate the introduction of the various business divisions, like MoreBathrooms – a complete bathroom design, supply and installation service; MoreAbility – bathroom solutions specialising in adaptations and alterations for the retired, elderly and disabled; and MoreBuild – a building solutions service.

allow for the development of a state-of-the-art showroom. The showroom is designed to appeal to all the senses, focusing specifically on touch. The latest development is the Burlington Area, which displays fixtures & fittings for a more traditional bathroom. Today, Passmores have a 30+ highly qualified and multi skilled installation team and surveyors who are experts in CAD Design, as well as a number of staff who are studying for NVQs and degrees. Tony and Steve continually invest in their staff, encouraging personal development and helping them to meet and exceed their personal aspirations.
Giving Back to the Community T h e Company also prides itself on being able to give something back to the community. Both Tony and Steve have
thrown themselves into various fundraising efforts, raising thousands of pounds for the Forgotten Hero’s Charity and the Leeds Children’s Charity – a charity very close to their hearts as their grandmother visited Silverdale as a child in the early 1900s. In 2012 Tony cycled over 1,000 kilometers across Zambia and then from Vietnam to Cambodia, while in 2013 Steve part took in the 10K Jane Tomlinson Run. And, later this year, the directors and a number of staff plan to enter into the Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds for local charities.
The Future is Bright! The Passmore Group has come a long way since Brian and Kathleen started it all those years ago. The future looks bright and Tony and Steve have plans to grow the company substantially in the coming years.

BIRD WATCH WITH STAN KENYON A welcome harbinger of Spring is the Wheatear, which arrives from Africa to nest in the upper Dales. En route it appears briefly on farmland, golf courses and the coast. Wheatears are greyish above and buffish below with a conspicuous white rump and black tail-bands. Males have a black eye-mask, black wings and a pinkish-buff breast. Attractive birds, they prefer upland pastures, rocky hillsides and stone walls. A characteristic habit is flying ahead of people, then perching before moving on again. They are hardy birds and can withstand brief hill snowfalls by moving temporarily to lower ground. Insects are their staple

diet. These active birds have a ‘wheet-chuk-chuk’ call. The song is a rapid series of rasping notes often delivered in excited display flight. Numbers of Wheatears have declined over the years.
They formerly bred on lowland heathland and downland but have retreated to their upland strongholds within Yorkshire. They are still widespread in the Pennines and the North York Moors.

CERT: 15 - RUNNING TIME: 99 MINS Merely the fact that The Grand Budapest Hotel is the latest film from leftfield auteur Wes Anderson should tell you almost everything you need to know. Those familiar with Anderson’s work will recognise the hallmarks of his signature style; a high calibre, stellar cast, titles in Futura font, meticulously detailed production design, vintage soundtrack, literary sensibilities and an air of cultivated eccentricity, whimsy and gentle melancholy. As such, you’re likely to know already if you’ll be going to see The Grand Budapest Hotel, depending largely on whether or not you’re a fan of Anderson’s stylistic flourishes and find his characteristic flights of fancy enchanting and endearing or if, like some, you consider his films overly contrived, self-conscious and (that lame and overused to the point of meaninglessness adjective), ‘quirky’. I am firmly in the former camp having heartily enjoyed the majority of Anderson’s previous features, particularly Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic and Fantastic Mr Fox. Not only does Grand Budapest deliver everything we’ve come to expect from an Anderson production, but I consider it to be one of his best.

The story is that of the adventures of renowned concierge, Monsieur Gustave
then this buoyant, energetic picture is a splendidly enjoyable farcical romp
H (a delightfully camp comedic performance by Ralph Fiennes) during his tenure at the GBH between the wars of the fictional eastern European country of Zubrowka. The tale is recounted in flashback by Zero Moustafa, once Gustave’s protégé and loyal ‘Lobby Boy’, now the enigmatic owner of the hotel. Through Zero’s reminiscences we see Gustave as the lynchpin of the hotel’s operation, charming and accommodating to a fault. He’s also in the habit of conducting amorous affairs with the hotel’s wealthy older female patrons. When one such guest (a barely recognisable Tilda Swinton) drops dead and bequeaths Gustave a valuable painting he is forced to go on the run with lobby boy in tow, pursued by both the authorities, who suspect him of the old lady’s murder, and by the deceased’s family attempting to lay claim to her fortune. As I say, this film is either up your alley or it isn’t but, if you’re at all susceptible to the myriad charms of Anderson’s filmmaking, then this buoyant,
14/03/2014 16:11
energetic picture is a splendidly enjoyable farcical romp. Like the rest of his oeuvre The Grand Budapest Hotel is absolutely gorgeous to look at and listen to, the costume and set design are just stunning to behold and virtually each frame is packed with an abundance of visual treats. It’s almost like a work out for your eyes. With bold colours bursting from the screen and kinetic camerawork the audience is swept up in the giddying swirl of exhilarating set pieces such as a brilliant prison break sequence and a snowbound, high speed chase. The cast, generously populated by thespian heavyweights and featuring cameos from a host of Anderson
regulars (Bill Murray, Bob Balaban, Jason Schwartzman et al) are uniformly great (particularly Fiennes in a refreshingly atypical role) and newcomer Tony Revolori, at the centre of the film as the young Zero, casually holds his own among such esteemed company. In terms of creating a beautifully realised, fantastical world the film is painstakingly crafted and aesthetically rich and sumptuous. It’s also an involving, rollicking yarn played out with verve, panache and an infectious, mischievous sense of fun. I’d strongly suggest you hasten your way to the front desk and check in to The Grand Budapest Hotel.

Second Americana Series at Seven Arts
It’s the 60s. What do you do when your brother (Sir Paul) has taken over the world with his band? Mike McCartney changed his name to Mike McGear, formed his own band ‘Scaffold’, and moved into the satire and comedy field. Hit records and TV series followed before Mike turned his back on showbiz to return to photography – his first love. That was 42 years ago. Mike has documented Liverpool since the late 50s, developing his films in the back bedroom and building up a fantastic collection. His portraits have been bought by The National Portrait Gallery and he has exhibited at The Smithsonian Institute. As well as the 60’s scene and famous faces, he captured a whole other side of Liverpool that nobody knows about. Someone invited him to do a Q & A in a bookshop and the

idea of a ‘One Man Show’ was born. The show is called ‘Sex, Drugs & Rock ‘N’ Roll (I Wish!)’ and is a hilarious and nostalgic look back, chronicling his life as seen through the photos he’s taken along the way. Mike’s show, which combines reminiscence, striking photography and a few songs too, is at City Varieties – the perfect venue for such an evening - on Saturday 19th April. He’s looking forward to plenty of audience participation!
Following a successful series of Americana gigs last year at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton, the new 2014 series kicks off on Saturday 5th April with Rita Hosking from Northern California.
Hosking sings original mountain roots music, soulful ballads and old time drive. She has a voice that really grabs your attention - a kind of cross between the haunting delivery of Gillian Welch and the richness of Iris Dement. She is one of the best-kept secrets in country folk and her razorsharp songs and great live performances attest to that. Also included in this year’s series is sensational newcomer Amanda Shires and established stalwarts Kim Richey and Eve Selis. Seven is rapidly becoming known on the Americana circuit as a venue with quality sound, encouraging fans to travel considerable distances to attend events.

Award for Excellence for Knock on Wood The 2014 Music Teacher Awards for Excellence, sponsored by Classic FM and Yamaha were announced recently at a ceremony in London. Out of 200 nominations, the judges selected 12 winners – and the winner in the ‘Most Innovative Retailer’ category was Knock on Wood, who they described as: “achieving outstanding commercial service by bringing practicing musicians and experts to the forefront of its operations’. As the Knock on Wood website says: whatever you want they have played it, compared it, taken it to pieces and put it back together again!

What she didn’t know was that her track, ‘Swans’, had just been voted ‘Best Song’ at the London Screenwriters’ Awards. Fuzzy got involved when a friend who was working on the film, suggested she should enter the 50 Kisses ‘Music Challenge’ competition to find music for the film. She decided to enter ‘Swans’, a hauntingly beautiful ode to lost love that she co-wrote as part of her musical project ‘Love of the Brave’. It won the Music Challenge and was chosen to play over the film’s end credits. An initiative to showcase

talent from new screenwriters and filmmakers, ‘50 Kisses’ is the world’s first narrative crowdsourced feature film, giving 50 writers and 50 filmmakers the chance to earn their first IMDb credit. It’s a film about love in all its forms and the standard of writing and film making is extremely impressive. Irreverent, charming, ridiculous, moving and at times wonderfully profound, 50 Kisses features everything from love struck zombies, androids and teddy bears to fatigue fighting lesbians! 50 Kisses is a multicultural and global reflection of pop culture’s vision of love in the 21st century. The film will premiere in 17 countries and circulate the film festivals. You can hear Fuzzy’s song here: http://www.50kissesfilm. com/music-challenge/

Countdown to Le Grand Depart
he excitement surrounding Le Grand Depart continues to gather momentum! Cycling clubs are organising rides taking in parts of the route and inviting as many people as possible to grab a bike and join in. The cultural festival has lined up photographic exhibitions and bike stories; David Hall of Sustrans invites everyone to ‘Free your bike’; and there’s to be a special Hospice Cycle Sportive. You absolutely cannot avoid thinking about cycling!
AlbaRosa – More than a Club! Although AlbaRosa started just over a year ago, it is now Leeds’ largest cycling club with over 300 members and caters for all levels, from novice through to racer. It started casually with a small group that wanted to push a competitive element, strava-based activity, and faster social rides than didn’t quite suit their previous club, and it just grew! “I believe our success comes primarily from our member input”, said club captain Jamie Tweddle. “Because we are young we have the luxury of being able to constantly change and adapt to our members’ suggestions. We run regular polls asking how they would like to see things done.
April _2014_Area_A.indd 62
“AlbaRosa is a really busy and vibrant place to be. You can get caught up in it and it can take up a lot of your time. We offer three days’ training and five club runs a week – not to mention the constant interaction that goes on 24/7 on Facebook. We are not just a club we are a community!” To celebrate Le Grand Depart, the club is planning a number of tour-focused rides and there will no doubt be riders heading off across the route throughout the whole of Summer. They have yet to select a location, but the club will be basing itself along the route and has visions of turning a piece of the route pink and black! www.albarosacc.com

Bike Story: Life on Two Wheels Through Everyday Stories Bike Story wants your recollections! This memorable outdoor theatre event will start and finish in York and will be scripted by playwright Mike Kenny using your tales of city streets and rural rides; of breakdowns, riding in packs, bike envy and much more. Touring festivals and events across Yorkshire, it will be a feast of storytelling on a cyclocentric set with real actors, real bicycles and real tales of life in the saddle. Directed by Alan Dix, Bike Story is part of Bradford-based 509 Arts’ ongoing exploration into the meaning of objects in the modern world. “Whether you’re a pedalpowered fanatic, a carbon-neutral commuter or a slow lane dawdler; whether it’s short and to the point or long and rambling – we want your stories!” said Alan. “We’re seeking tales of city streets and rural rides, of getting lost and Sunday trips, of the school run and the rusty bike - so please take a few minutes to tell us your story, it may find its way into the production.” To join in Bike Story, visit www.bikestory. org.uk, where you can submit pictures and stories and find out what’s happened so far.
Blimey What a Picture! Send in Your Bike Photos for New Exhibition at Leeds City Museum Musician/playwright Boff Whalley and photographer Casey Orr are asking Leeds residents to send in photographs of themselves, their friends and family on their bicycles for a new exhibition at Leeds City Museum in June and July. The exhibition will tell the story of life on two wheels in the city and feature a range of portraits of people on their bikes. Photographs can be scanned and submitted digitally at www.bicyclism.co.uk. These will be posted to an online gallery at www.
April _2014_Area_A.indd 63
bicyclismleeds.co.uk and a selection will form part of the exhibition itself when it opens on 24th June. “We’d love people to have a root through their family photo albums for photos - old or new, faded polaroids or digital snaps - so that we can build up a picture of Leeds through bicycles”, said Casey. The exhibition ‘Bicyclism: Leeds on Two Wheels’ runs from 24th June to 7th July at Leeds City Museum and is part of the Yorkshire Festival 2014. Free Your Bike!
Whether you are a regular or occasional cyclist, this is the year to free your bike. The Tour de France sets off from Leeds on 5th July and races round Yorkshire in two days. For the slower paced cyclist, however, there’s another Tour de Yorkshire out there, using routes on the National Cycle Network. Forget about busy roads and stress, give your bike a relaxed day out using some of the Network’s 1,000 Yorkshire miles. For hassle free gentle cycling choose one of the classic railway paths – the Cinder Track between Scarborough and Hayburn Wyke; the Nidderdale Greenway between Harrogate and Ripley, crossing the Nidd gorge and ending with ice creams at Ripley Castle; or Yorkshire’s original railway path from Selby to York, continuing on the riverside path and quiet lanes to Beningbrough Hall for afternoon tea.
For rides in West Yorkshire, your bike will really enjoy the Wetherby to Thorp Arch railway path, or follow the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath route from Leeds City Centre to Saltaire and Bingley. You can also escape to the Pennine foothills on the Great Northern Railway Trail (Cullingworth to Queensbury), or cruise the Spen Valley Greenway from Low Moor Bradford to Dewsbury and Ossett passing through Earlsheaton tunnel. Especially spruced up recently for Le Tour visitors are the miles of canal and riverside route from Brighouse to Hebden Bridge and Todmorden through the dramatic landscape of the Calder Valley. Wherever you’re heading, pick up the Discover Yorkshire maps available from Sustrans (www.sustrans.org.uk) and make sure you see Yorkshire by bike this Summer. David Hall - Sustrans

There’s Never Been a Better Time to Start Cycling! Once you’ve got your bike, just get out and ride it! If you lack confidence, ride with a more experienced friend. It’s fun to ride with a few friends, there’s always plenty to talk about and you can stop at a café for a drink and some cake! Consider joining a local cycling club. Do a quick web search to see which ones are in your area. There are usually some experienced riders who are happy to give tips and pass on advice. They’ll also have a good knowledge of quiet routes into the countryside.
With cycle madness breaking out all over, we asked cycle coach Patrick Douglas for a few hints for the bike novice. “There’s never been a better time to start! Choose a bike appropriate for your use – whether it be for mountain biking, commuting or road/sports cycling. And, buy from your local bike shop, because they will help you select one that suits your needs and is the correct size.
As you gain confidence, you might start thinking about participating in some cycling challenges, sportives or races. you could have teeth like these...
This lovely lady originally had a partial denture to replace 2 missing molar teeth and hated wearing it. After talking the options through she chose to have 2 dental implants with crowns to replace the missing teeth, and the whole treatment took around 4 months. The patient is extremely delighted with the outcome and wishes that she had come to see me much sooner! She gave me her denture and told me to send it to Africa!

Softball is a fun, friendly, inclusive sport played by men and women of all ages, regardless of athletic ability or skill level.
Rather than relying on athletic prowess, softball requires communication, teamwork and the ability to think on your feet. As well as offering players a chance to keep fit and develop important skills, softballers enjoy unmatched camaraderie and support on the field. Teams are made up of at least five men and five women. Today it caters for about fourteen private and corporate teams with around 250 active players. As well as a rich social calendar, members

Last year the Froebelian School in Horsforth adopted the Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal as their special charity. The children responded enthusiastically to the challenge of raising as much money as possible. Through a variety of events and appeals, including a harvest of toys, cake and bun sale and collections at concerts, the school raised an amazing £10,823! The children’s efforts were supported by parents who donated generously at the Centenary Ball and by Susan Algar, a staff member, who

completed the Inca Trail Trek in memory of her late husband. A cheque was presented to Tom Moore and Mr Ted, representatives of the Leeds Children’s Hospital Appeal who attended a recent assembly at the school. “We are incredibly proud of the amount of money we have raised for the Leeds Children’s hospital”, said Mr Tranmer, Headmaster. “We hope this will make a difference for lots of children.” “The children have really engaged with the charity and gone the extra mile in their centenary year”, said Tom Moore, on behalf of the charity, “We cannot thank them enough. This money will go a long way towards making the hospital better, brighter and happier for every child.”

We want to create school places in areas of Leeds where existing schools are already
Pictured: Natalie Rawson and Franziska Florack, co-project managers
A group of parents is currently seeking to raise awareness for a new Steiner Academy that could help to tackle the shortage of school places in Leeds.
According to a report by Leeds City Council, the lack of 753 primary school spaces last year meant that children had to be educated outside the city. The proposed academy (for children aged four – 16), is due to open in 2015 and will offer an alternative way of learning based on the Steiner Waldorf method, which encourages children to explore the world through play until they are ready for formal lessons at

the age of seven. The first intake of pupils will be for children aged between four and six in 2015. There will be an increased intake each year until a total of 624 pupils (up to age 16), is reached in 2025. The school will use a specific curriculum to teach children, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary and experiential learning, ensuring that pupils leave with the National Standard of eight GCSEs, or the equivalent. “We are a group of parents, teachers and community leaders who are trying to get this application through”, said
Franziska Florack, co-project manager. “We want to create school places in areas of Leeds where existing schools are already under pressure. There are four Steiner academies in the south – Leeds needs to be part of this national education movement and hundreds of residents in North Leeds agree.” For more information on how to support the Steiner Academy Leeds bid, visit www.steineracademyleeds. co.uk or email info@ steineracademyleeds.co.uk

ope Pastures’ ‘Pony Days’ are hugely popular. Children spend a day caring for the ponies – including mucking out, grooming, plaiting manes and tails, leading the ponies and having lots of fun. Games, quizzes and activities take place in the visitor centre, giving the children a chance to relax and socialise in between stable activities. They meet the horses, ponies, mule and donkeys and get to know them all. It is the closest thing to actually having a pony of their own!
It is the closest thing to actually having a pony of their own
Over the Easter Holidays there will Pony Days every Monday and Thursday – 7th, 10th, 14th and 17th April. The days are suitable for children aged five and up. They run from 10am – 3pm and cost a donation of £25 to The Phyllis Harvey Horse & Donkey Trust, which contributes towards the upkeep of the horses and ponies. For further information, please contact 0113 2614344, info.hopepastures@gmail.com, or visit www.hopepastures.org
With funding from Community First, the Hollybush Café at Hollybush Conservation Centre (run by The Conservation Volunteers) now has interactive exploration bags for children. These are free to borrow and children can complete activities with their families and friends, and find out more about gardening and nature. The kits contain magnifying glasses, binoculars, pond nets and bug boxes. They are designed for pond dipping, insect hunting, identifying trees, birds and wildflowers. The Hollybush café, located on the canal path where Broad Lane meets Wyther Lane, is open 11am – 2pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
