orkshire batsman Joe Sayers recently announced his retirement from First Class cricket. Joe (known to his team-mates as Squirrel or Squidge), played his entire county career spanning nine years at Yorkshire, notching up 97 First-class matches for Yorkshire, scoring 4,855 runs, and amassing nine centuries. He is one of only seven Yorkshire cricketers to have carried his bat through a completed innings more than once. Sayers, 30, graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Physics and gave up a promising junior career as a goalkeeper at Bradford City to pursue life as a professional cricketer. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as a professional cricketer with Yorkshire”, said Joe. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody associated with the Club, in particular the supporters, and I wish the lads all the best for the 2014 season.” As a tribute to his time with Yorkshire, Joe decided to write a behind-the-scenes book – the timing of which coincided with the 150th anniversary of the club. The recently published
February2014 Area B.indd 6
‘Rose-Tinted Summer: The Dressing Room Diary’ takes a look at the peaks and troughs of the Summer of 2013 in a beautifully written account, revealing the tensions and drama of the dressing room. Because Joe spent time in both the First and Second XI camps, he was able to describe the feelings of young players on the first rungs of the ladder as well as those at the very top. Beginning in January 2013, when the Club launched its 150th anniversary celebrations, it goes on to describe the preparations for the new season. It takes in the pre-season tour of Barbados when the players knew that they must perform in order to stake a claim for first team places, then the season proper. The thrill of soaring to the top of the Championship table, is tinged with a sadness and frustration that the team could not match such scintillating form in the one-day arena. The Preface features international perspectives of Yorkshire by former England captain, Michael Vaughan, and Australia’s current coach, Darren Lehmann, both of whom were White Rose team-mates and close friends. Joe also catches up with Joe Root as he prepares for the Ashes tour and in a splendid interview discovers what led to the spectacular rise of one of Yorkshire and England’s greatest young players. ‘Rose-Tinted Summer: The Dressing Room Diary’ (£17.99) will appeal to cricket fans, both young and old. Published by Great Northern Books, it is available from the Club shop in Headingley (0843 504 3099) and all good book shops.

TOMMY CLAPHAM (1817-1895) Showman And Entrepreneur
The old Bear Pit on Cardigan Road is a familiar local landmark and an extraordinary survival. Cared for now by the Civic Trust, it is one of the few reminders of an idealistic and ambitious project: the Leeds Zoological and Botanical Gardens, which from 1840 until the 1860s occupied this whole area. There was no road then, only lawns and shaded paths, fountains, lakes, tall trees and colourful flowers, enclosed within high stone walls. The bear pit was home to a solitary Russian brown bear, with only a fox, a racoon and a few swans for company – lions or elephants had proven too expensive. Founded with high ideals and stern rules against Sunday opening and alcohol, always under-funded and dogged by problems, the Gardens failed to make money and were closed after only eight years. At this point one of the original investors, a young entrepreneur called Thomas (Tommy) Clapham, offered to take them over – only 30 years old, and bursting with fresh ideas, he was confident he could make the Gardens a popular success. Tommy, originally from Keighley, was drawn to Leeds by all the opportunities the growing town offered. He saw his chance when the new Leeds-Thirsk railway opened in 1849, linking Leeds with Harrogate and Ripon and passing right by the Burley end of the Gardens, where trains could stop. He set himself up as a railway excursion agent, took on the lease of the Gardens, changed the name to ‘The Royal Gardens’, and switched the emphasis to popular entertainment and fun – monkeys whose antics made people laugh, firework displays, balloon ascents, military bands, spectacular galas – all at a lower entrance price to bring the crowds in. He tried everything, but even he could not make the Gardens pay, and ten years later, in 1858, he was forced to close. Even the elderly bear was auctioned off, with the lawnmowers and other equipment. Undeterred, Tommy borrowed

Cases of separation and divorce surge in January. Most people put children and family first over the festive period but post-Christmas many are faced with a tough period ahead. Gabbie Clasper, Head of Family Law at Emsleys Solicitors offers advice on moving forward in the New Year‌ It can be bewildering for those experiencing separation and divorce for the first time. Emotional support from friends and family is vital, but at some stage most people need formal advice. But who do you turn to? Separation is an intensely private matter. Often people don’t want to visit a local solicitor. Many put off making that initial enquiry for fear of a huge legal bill. UD NLL 153x110 Ad AW:Layout 1
To alleviate some of the stress, Emsleys has launched understandingdivorce.co.uk which gives a wealth of free advice. If your circumstances are straightforward the site has a download to help you divorce without a solicitor. It can also help if you need more legal advice and how costs can be managed. It always helps to maintain good relations but the nature of separation means that conflict can arise. If this happens, consider mediation, collaborative law or arbitration, all of which a solicitor can advise on. If you need a solicitor, choose one that is Law Societyaccredited and ideally a member of Resolution - a body of lawyers who conduct cases in a child-focused 18/12/2013 12:17 Page 1

Andrew Geoghegan is BJA Designer of the Year Andrew Geoghegan, who used to be based in Chapel Allerton, was recently voted winner of the British Jewellers’ Association (BJA) ‘Designer of the Year’ award 2013. Andrew, who attended The Grammar School at Leeds, has developed an impressive collection of beautiful bridal jewellery, cocktail rings, pendants and earrings called ‘AG’ and has a large, dedicated following. “2013 has been another remarkable year for AG”, said Andrew. “It’s hugely exciting time for us at the moment as we are also about to make our international debut in Munich. And, we recently moved to a beautiful converted farm building just outside Wetherby. I have a feeling inspiration will be at an all time high once I’m surrounded by all that glorious landscape.” Andrew was named in the ‘Hot 100’ list of jewellery movers and shakers in 2012, the BJA ‘Designer of the Year’ award is one of the most respected accolades in the industry. www.andrewgeoghegan.com

Development Delays Can Have Devastating Impact Councillor Jane Dowson (Chapel Allerton) is calling for changes in planning rules that will ensure that developers start work on derelict properties as soon as possible after receiving planning permission, to avoid buildings becoming eyesores for local communities. At a recent Council Meeting, Councillor Dowson spoke about the implications of extending the time period for planning permission for Mansion House, a Grade II listed building, part of the Mansion Gate development in Chapel Allerton. According to Leeds Civic Trust, the former Chapel Allerton Hospital “sits a sad wreck in the middle of the modern Mansion Gate housing development, neglected and ignored despite its prominent position and Grade II listing. The building is yet another example of the consequences of not placing firm enough conditions on a developer so that they are able to profit from a historic setting but are not compelled to complete works to the listed building itself.” Councillor Dowson strongly advocates the sympathetic development of this building. Mansion House has had planning permission since 2007 and this permission has been extended twice, most recently in late 2013. The building dates to 1835-40 and was designed by John Clark for the mill owner John Hives. It is built of fine dressed stone in the Greek Revival style. The central pediment is supported by two giant fluted Ionic columns. The hipped roof has fine chimneys in the form of linked short Ionic columns. The interiors were equally grand with green marble and stone floors; with more fluted Ionic columns in the hall, and a paneled ceiling featuring classical moulded plaster decoration. There are the remains of a fine tunnel-vaulted stairwell with divided staircase, ornate iron balusters, and roundarched stair windows.
Councillor Dowson is determined that developers should prioritise building on sites when they have permission. “Mansion House is a lovely building and I do not want to see it deteriorate further”, she said. “The current laws do not place any requirement on developers to fulfill their planning agreements. “Sir Michael Lyons has been asked to look into how 200,000 houses a year can be built in Britain. Part of this includes ensuring developers start work on the land where they have planning permission. For us to achieve our housing ambition we need to legislate and insist that developers start work immediately on sites where they have permission.”

This month, John Steinbeck’s ‘Of Mice and Men’ starts a month-long run at West Yorkshire Playhouse (28th February – 29th March) and it sounds like it is definitely not to be missed. Directed by Associate Director Mark Rosenblatt, who recently joined The Playhouse from The National Theatre Studio, this will be no clichéd, comfortable ride. With names like Mississippi musician Heather Christian and designer Max Jones on board, it promises to be both visually and musically stunning. “This is such a well known story”, said Mark, “the challenge is to bring something new to the production. It is a perfect play – I’ve rarely read something so complete in itself, working towards its tragic ending.” The play revolves around two friends, George and Lennie, itinerant workers travelling from town to town looking for work during The Great Depression. George’s dream is that he and Lennie, a sweet, simple, gentle giant of a man, will own their own ranch one day and we share the

loneliness, isolation and sacrifice that follows them on their journey. It’s relentlessly hot. Everywhere they go hundreds of others are in the same boat. Everyone’s is looking for work to survive. “The characters have such anger in them”, continued Mark. “It is raw. Men are talking about money, booze, work, using prostitutes. It’s very masculine. “I saw ‘Mission Drift’ last year at The National, in which Heather Christian both performed and wrote the music. I felt immediately that her sound and attitude would suit the world of ‘Of Mice & Men’ perfectly. It is so rooted in American tradition and so much is revealed through the music.” ‘Mission Drift’, presented by TEAM, a New York-based ensemble whose aim is to make new work about the experience of living in America today, was a huge success. The music fused Las

Vegas glitz with Western ballads and Southern blues. Heather has a very unique style. Her songs are born out of adversity, full of emotion. A classically trained pianist and daughter of a blues musician, she has developed a style that draws on all these various elements. Variety Magazine described her performances as “howling like a werewolf with a voice made of molasses”! Heather has not only written all the music for ‘Of Mice and Men’, she also plays Curly’s wife. The whole company will be involved in the music, which will feel as contemporary as it does historic. Designer Max Jones loves the challenge of an epic production, which this promises to be. In The Quarry theatre he will be able to take advantage of its huge space to create that feeling of vast American landscapes as a background to this timeless story of friendship, isolation and hope.

Northern Spark Brings Mamet to Seven Arts
American soprano Kelly Cae Hogan returns to Opera North in calmer circumstances to take on the role of Lady Macbeth in the company’s production of Verdi’s dark, dramatic take on the classic Shakespeare play.
In 2012, Kelly flew into Leeds from Berlin at the last moment to save the day when Annalena Persson, who was due to perform the crucial role of Brunnhilde in Die Walkure, was unable to sing due to a a throat infection. Kelly stepped into the role with almost no rehearsal time and received rave reviews from the audience and critics alike! Although her return may be calmer, her role certainly isn’t! Directed by Tim Albery, Opera North’s Macbeth is a gripping, exciting production. Verdi described Shakespeare’s play as ‘one of mankind’s greatest creations’, and added musical fireworks to create a captivating drama about the nature of ambition, power and
February2014 Area B.indd 16
the human heart. This excitingly dramatic, modern-dress production, depicts the vivid world of the supernatural through the ‘bleak and elegantly styled’ design of Johan Engels. Hungarian baritone Béla Perencz, sings Macbeth, after his critically acclaimed performance as Wotan in the Company’s Die Walküre last year; Korean tenor Jung Soo Yun makes his Opera North debut in the role of Macduff and Bass baritone Paul Whelan his as Banquo. Tobias Ringborg, one of Sweden’s most prolific musical talents, conducts. Macbeth opens at Leeds Grand Theatre on Friday 7th February.
After a critically acclaimed run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe last year, Northern Spark Theatre, who are based in Oakwood, will present David Mamet’s comedy Bobby Gould In Hell at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton, on 7th and 8th March. Bobby Gould in Hell follows filmmaker Bobby as he comes face-to-face with the devil in this fast talking comic duel of wits. His time on earth is about to be examined. Will Gould confess his sins? Will he prove he is a good man? Or will his ditsy ex-girlfriend turn up, spill the beans and damn him forever? Mamet’s gripping tale of love, lies and redemption will leave you asking … who deserves to be damned for all time? “I was over the moon with what the company achieved in Edinburgh”, said Scott Oakley, Northern Spark’s founder. “As the sole flag bearer for David Mamet’s work at last year’s Fringe, I knew that we had to deliver a finely tuned and incredibly funny performance of Mamet at his very best. Only after the run was over did I realise that we had accomplished just that, and in the process set the wheels in motion to bring this ‘outrageously funny show’ back to Yorkshire.” Northern Spark Theatre Company is a collective of new talent that strives to showcase the work of young professional actors, theatre designers, writers and directors.

Talawa Theatre Company, which brought Beckett’s fabulous ‘Waiting for Godot’ with Jamaican accents to Leeds two years ago, returns with another gem from 11th – 15th February. ‘Moon on a Rainbow Shawl’, directed by Talawa’s artistic director Michael Buffong, was written by Errol John in 1953. It depicts a vibrant, cosmopolitan world that is as harsh as it is filled with colour and warmth. In Port of Spain, Trinidad, the sounds of calypso music, hymn tunes and drums are interrupted by the raucous celebrations of troops returning from war. Here, neighbours drink, bawl, make
love, look out for each other and crave a better life. But Ephraim is no dreamer and nothing, not even the seductive Rosa, is going to stop him escaping his dead-end job for a fresh start in England. Talawa Theatre Company, the UK’s primary black-led theatre company, aims to create work informed by the wealth and diversity of the Black British experience, invest in talent, build audiences and inspire dialogue with and within communities across Britain. Arts & Culture
Another The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery is currently featuring an exhibition dedicated to the art of Alfred Drury, one of the leading sculptors of the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, and creator of the bronze nude light standards in City Square, Leeds. ‘Alfred Drury and the New Sculpture’, curated by University of Kent art historian Dr Ben Thomas, reviews the art and life of the artist, addressing his influences and his role in the New Sculpture movement of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Included within the exhibition will be some of his most important, smallerscale, sculptural works, including his most characteristic masterpieces Griselda, The Age of Innocence and Lilith. Drury was arguably one of the central figures in the New Sculpture movement because he combined the realism of the great French sculptor Aimé-Jules Dalou, and the Michelangeloesque vision of Alfred Stevens, whose art he revered. Alongside sculptural works, the exhibition will display paintings and medals by the artist, together with documents and photographs from the period. It also includes works by Aimé Jules Dalou, Auguste Rodin, Lord Leighton, and Alfred Stevens. ‘Alfred Drury and the New Sculpture’ is on display at The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery ( in the Parkinson Building, University of Leeds, Woodhouse Lane LS2) until Sunday 13th April. The gallery is open to the public, Monday – Friday, 10am – 5pm. Admission free.

Chance to See Zephaniah’s ‘Refugee Boy’ Based on a novel by Benjamin Zephaniah, and adapted for the stage by poet, Lemn Sissay, ‘Refugee Boy’ was a huge hit at The West Yorkshire Playhouse last year. This moving, thought provoking production achieves a huge amount with a small cast and inventive use of minimal staging.
The exhibition is accompanied by a programme of related events – for details visit www. leeds.ac.uk/ gallery/ events.htm
Zephaniah’s original story reached the stage after being filtered through Sissay’s experience, whose own life story is uncannily similar to that of Alem, the young boy at the centre of the story. The result is a dynamic script with energy and humour which engages both head and heart. ‘Refugee Boy’ is at The Playhouse from 6th – 8th February. If you missed it last year, be sure to catch it this time. Tickets from 0113 213 7700 or www.wyp.org. uk

BBC Radio’s multi awardwinning antidote to panel games is coming to Leeds Grand Theatre on Monday 2nd June. Regulars Barry Cryer, Graeme Garden, Tim Brooke-Taylor, Jeremy Hardy and host Jack Dee will all be here, together with Colin Sell providing piano accompaniment. I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue has been delighting fans since 1972. It has seen its success blossom from the impish son of I’m Sorry I’ll Read That Again to the big daddy of all panel games. The format of the game is simple: four players are given silly things to do by the Chairman, with Colin Sell setting

some of them to music. In 2007 ‘Clue’ launched the first of many national tours, recruiting Jeremy Hardy as the fourth panelist. The format of the touring show is a ‘Greatest Hits’ presentation, sourcing the very finest material from Clue’s enormous archives (ably retrieved by Samantha and her two kindly archivist friends). The show looks just like a recording, feels like a recording, sounds like a recording, and audience members are also treated to their very own kazoo! Tickets (£27.50) are available from the box office on 0844 848 2700 or online at leedsgrandtheatre.com

Food & Drink
COSMO, the new Pan Asian restaurant on Boar Lane, Leeds, just opened a couple of months ago, but on a chilly Monday night in January it was heaving!
e soon found out why – you don’t just drop in for a quick meal, you go to COSMO to enjoy a dining experience. You invite friends and family and settle in to take part in a veritable banquet, where, if you are not careful, you could risk seriously overeating. Basically, once seated, it is up to you to decide what to eat and when. You grab a plate and visit a series of exciting food stations. The first laid out a dozen or so enticing, freshly prepared Chinese, Japanese, Korean or Malaysian dishes. There was also soup, sushi and a Tappanyaki counter with busy chefs cooking up a storm. We went back to our table, savoured every morsel on our plates, then headed back to pick up another plate and pile it with lovely curries, pickles,
February2014 Area B.indd 20
nans and rice. Next was the Mexican corner with another interesting variety of dishes and then on to the Continental counter where you could choose a sauce and have it made up before your eyes to go with some fresh pasta, or grab a slice of pizza, or opt for lasagna or one of the other lovely dishes on offer. Each time you just abandoned your used plate and headed back to sample the next global taste sensation. To finish off there was almost a whole
I have to admit we didn’t actually make it past those wonderful curries!
wall of desserts – from fresh fruit and apple crumble, to mousses, delicate little cakes, jellies, ice cream and a chocolate fountain. I have to admit we didn’t actually make it past those wonderful curries! So, be warned – when you go, take your time and don’t think you have to try absolutely everything the first time. The great thing is that no matter how much you eat, it is all one price – just £13.99 Monday to Thursday evening and £1 more on Friday and Saturday. Lunch, which doesn’t have quite as wide a selection, costs £7.99 (£9.99 on Saturday). Wine is also very reasonably priced and there is an interesting cocktail menu. The restaurant seats about 230 people and, although it was virtually booked out that evening, and there were several family parties, we didn’t feel encroached on in any way. The service was excellent. Our server, Kristina, who hailed from Hungary, was ultra attentive, magically disappearing used plates and conjuring up drinks as soon as we thought them. And, despite all those people there were no queues at any of the food stations. COSMO is open seven days a week at 52 Boar Lane LS1 5EL. Tel: 0113 246 5555, www.cosmorestaurants.co.uk

COOK at Moortown Corner, Harrogate Road, LS17 continues to build on its successful tasting evenings. Following numerous bookings for groups around North Leeds, manager Graham Harpur is now inviting fitness and slimming clubs to book evenings to taste the new COOK OMG Pots (that’s Oh My Goodness!). This latest addition to the COOK range features dishes that range from just 147 to 400 calories and have just 14g of fat – and they taste amazing! That’s under 20% of the guideline daily allowances. The five new recipes are Prawn Tom Yum, Middle Eastern Lamb Koftas, Thai Butternut Squash
Pictured:
Beef Bourguignon Soup, Japanese Salmon and Moroccan-Spiced Chicken. People are finding that they work really well with the 5:2 diet. Mind you, plenty of their classic recipes also fit the bill – for example, the Beef Bourguignon has just 276 calories. So you can eat healthy, low calorie meals without sacrificing any of the taste. Your family and dinner guests will never suspect a thing! Contact Graham on 0113 237 0377 to book your tasting evening.

Oddfellows members, George and Margaret Lickess from Horsforth, recently made history in one of the world’s oldest and largest friendly societies, by both holding the position of Chairman (Grand Master) of the Society. George was elected to the top position at the Society’s annual conference last year, and Margaret held the same position in 2005. In recognition of his appointment the Leeds District of the Oddfellows hosted a special function at the Thackray Medical Museum and a celebration dinner dance at the Crowne Plaza, attended by 160 members from around the country. “It’s a privilege to have been elected by the membership to represent their interests nationally”, said George. “Margaret’s earlier experience and knowledge will be a great help.” Margaret was Secretary of the Leeds District from 2004 and worked for the District for over 25 years. “George will no doubt have a challenging year ahead” said Margaret, “but he has great qualities that he can bring to the role.” The Oddfellows has over 200 years’ experience of helping its members. In Leeds it organises regular social events and provides care, friendly support and advice for over 3,100. Tricky Weather As I write, I am listening to the latest in a series of unusual weather events blowing around the chimney pots. The Meteorological Office has issued severe weather warnings, tidal barriers have been raised and many coastal towns have been warned to prepare for flooding. We don’t know whether these events will continue into 2014 in Britain or abroad, but we do know
February2014 Area B.indd 24
Unusual weather is becoming more common
It is nearly three months since the Council introduced alternate weekly collections. I have had a fairly busy inbox and mailbag, from disgruntled residents whose bin collections have been missed, or whose black bins are full to overflowing. I would welcome some wider feedback on the alternate weekly bin collections – how is it working so far for you, what are your views on the new collections? On the subject of new ideas, many will have heard about the street lights being turned off late at night in some parts of the city. I have had a number of worried residents asking when this is coming to Alwoodley. At the moment, there do not appear to be plans drawn up to roll this out in Alwoodley – but if this alters, be assured that Neil, Peter and I will do all we can to stop it happening and will of course
let you know straight away. As always, this column will be one of the first places to bring you this news. Winter can, of course, bring some shocking weather and February is looking like it will be quite chilly). For latest weather and traffic updates, warnings and notices from the Council’s Contingency Planning Team, follow me on twitter @Cllr_Dan_Cohen or on Facebook, Cllr Dan Cohen – these are also great forums for getting in touch with me to report local issues, pot holes that need filling, bin collections that have been missed, or grit bins that are empty - to name but a few examples.
that unusual weather is becoming more common. However news reports have tended not to ask what lies behind this. A factor may be that the Arctic has warmed much more rapidly than the rest of the planet. The Arctic Ocean has massively reduced in extent and volume of ice, reducing the temperature gradient between the Pole, and temperate and tropical regions, and thus disrupting the jet stream. In the past, the International Panel on Climate Change has been ridiculed for isolated errors in its evidence. It spent much time ensuring that errors would not be repeated in its latest major work before concluding that the World is warming and that it is extremely likely that human activity is to blame. This time its findings have
not been seriously challenged, but have largely been ignored, even though they are the conclusions of virtually all properly peer reviewed scientists working in the field. A lot has been done locally, nationally and internationally to conserve fossil energy - not least in Leeds. But if you cannot easily stop an oil tanker, it is even harder to slow all oil and coal production - fossil energy saved in one place may just be consumed somewhere else. Let’s hope that in 2014 we can have a proper mature international debate on how to reduce the volume of CO2 going into the atmosphere, driven by objective and rational debate. Once a year it is the tradition to attend the place of worship of the president for that year, and this year is special because it is the Leeds club’s 80th anniversary. “It has been wonderful to bring the Inner Wheel and Rotary to my own church”, said Mary Herbert, 2013-14 President and a St Andrew’s Elder.

OTRA Submits Heritage Lottery Bid Everyone agrees that reading is an essential skill. Unfortunately many children struggle to learn to read. In England in 2013, one in seven left primary school behind in their reading. What’s more, one in six adults in the UK has a reading level below that expected of an eleven-year-old. Beanstalk is a national charity that gives one-to-one literacy support to children in primary schools who have fallen behind with their reading. They urgently need more volunteers so they can help more children in 2014. Each Beanstalk volunteer works with three children and sees each child for two 30 minute sessions a week, during term-time, for a whole year. They read, play and talk together, building their confidence and helping them to catch up with their reading. You’ll give them a chance to learn at their own pace and adapt your sessions
February2014 Area B.indd 26

to suit them. With Beanstalk’s support the child’s approach to learning and enjoying reading is often transformed. “We’d like to encourage people to contact us if they think they could give a child the gift of reading”, said Clare Sandford, Area Manager for the Yorkshire and North East. “Our aim is to reach out to 18,000 children nationally by 2017 but to do this we urgently need more volunteers.” For further information, call the West Yorkshire Office on 0113 277 6159, or visit www. beantstalkcharity.org.uk/readinghelpers
OTRA (Oakwood Traders and Residents’ Association) recently submitted a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund to support the restoration of Oakwood Clock. The bid is for £100,000 and OTRA expect to hear the outcome by mid February. If successful, work on the Clock can begin quickly, as the rest of the funding (£55,000) is already in place. The Heritage Lottery bid includes a whole package of community and education activities over an 18 month period, involving a new local heritage trail and app, an oral history project and work with all the local schools. The bid took considerable time and effort to develop and OTRA would like to acknowledge the input of all those involved, as well as the support from Leeds City Council, local councillors and officers. Thanks also go to all who have donated and helped to support the fundraising efforts so far.

Ever wanted to do something, but didn’t want to do it on your own, and knew that none of your existing friends would be very interested? Well Helen King has come up with the answer. She has launched a website that aims to connect women with similar interests. Take in your favourite, monochrome, subtitled film, tackle that 10 mile walk, join a book club, and do it with someone who was looking for someone to share a similar experience with. This is what Togetherfriends. com offers. We don’t always
have friends with the same interests and may feel a little isolated, fed up and in need of a friendly face. Helen is enthusiastic about the possibilities her new site offers women who want to reach out to others like themselves. “Togetherfriends puts like-minded women in touch with each other, based on age, location and interests. It offers a new concept in friendship. Although there are many clubs out there, there are few other sites where women are linked to just one other ’friend’ at a time.” This could open up a whole new world! Sign up for that marathon, get out those brochures, take a course, finally you can find someone to do it with….who know where this could lead! To find out more, visit www.togetherfriends.com

Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods are Big 160 Winners
Pictured: Cllr Lucinda Yeadon (front, second left) and Cllr Mark Dobson (front, centre), with the new Parks and Countryside apprentices.
Leeds City Council’s Parks and Countryside team recently welcomed 12 new apprentices to its ranks. The new starters, who were chosen from 240 applicants, will divide their time between studying for a Level 2 or 3 qualification at Leeds City College, and learning their trade across the Parks and Countryside Service over a two-year period. Eleven apprentices will start work in the gardening team and one in business partnerships. They will be based at a number of locations, including Lotherton Hall, Middleton Park and Roundhay Park. This is the first formal apprenticeship programme to be undertaken by the Parks and Countryside Department since 1984. Many of those apprentices still work for the council today, including the current head of service Sean Flesher, who is a graduate of the scheme.
February2014 Area B.indd 30
It is fantastic to see more young people being given the same chance I had through this new programme
“Carrying out an apprenticeship with the Parks and Countryside Service gave me the perfect start in the landscape industry and it is fantastic to see more young people being given the same chance I had through this new programme.” As part of the programme, apprentices will have access to a skilled mentor offering advice, guidance and support, and be given the opportunity to develop their skills in other areas including forestry and golf course maintenance. On hand to meet and welcome the apprentices at Golden Acre Park was Leeds City Council’s executive board member for the environment, Councillor Mark Dobson and Councillor Lucinda Yeadon, Leeds City Council’s executive member for leisure & skills.
Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods were recently declared winners in Skipton Building Society’s Big 160 Grassroots Giving initiative, receiving £500 in funding. Skipton’s Grassroots Giving programme was set up to support groups that showed commitment to their community and could illustrate how they planned to evolve in the future and how the funding would be used. The Friends of Gledhow Valley Woods is a volunteerled group, whose aim is to preserve and improve local woods for the use and enjoyment of the whole community. The Friends are hoping to provide easier access for disabled residents and families using pushchairs. This requires building wider paths. The funding from Skipton’s Grassroots Giving Campaign will be hugely beneficial, as more members of the community will be able to access the woods and experience the beauty of their local woodland.

Home & Garden
The weather in February may be bleak but there is much to feel optimistic about as cheerful bulbs begin to bloom and the first seeds of the growing season can be planted. The Edible Garden igns of Spring Although Spring itself may be some weeks away, there are promising signs in the flowerbeds as fresh little Snowdrops and bright yellow Winter Aconites begin to emerge. Later colourful Crocuses, the blue stars of Glory of the Snow (Chinodoxa) and early Narcissi make an appearance. Many early flowers are fragrant to ensure the attention of a limited insect population. Bulbs planted in easy-to-sniff positions such as window boxes are extra special.
There are promising signs in the flowerbeds as fresh little Snowdrops and bright yellow Winter Aconites begin to emergecentre), with the new Parks and Countryside apprentices.
With the rapidly approaching planting season in mind, I am keen to clear space in my diminutive veg plot. Out come the last of the leeks, Brussels sprouts and parsnips to be made into tasty Winter dishes. If like me you cannot wait to get planting, some seeds can be started this month on an indoor windowsill. Try Summer cabbages, lettuce and onions. For flower lovers, sweet peas can also be sown now. Cover your rhubarb with a pot or bucket to keep out light so that delicately flavoured ‘forced’ stalks are produced.
If you cannot wait to get planting, some seeds can be started this month on an indoor windowsill
You can buy seed potatoes now and leave them on a cool windowsill to ‘chit’. This just means that the new shoots begin to emerge before you actually plant them. Opinion is divided about whether it makes for a better potato crop, but I do it because for me it is heartening to have signs of new life erupting in the house, even if it is just a humble spud.
Planning and Inspiration Winter months are good planning months, so why not draw up a planting plan for a flower bed that was disappointing last year. Remember that plants look better in groups rather than dotted around singly as this gives a restless and untidy look. Tall plants at the back of the border and smaller ones at the front may sound like obvious advice, but it is easy to get this wrong, so do check the final height of plants before you put them in. You could experiment with flower colours too and perhaps limit yourself to shades of one colour for a restful and sophisticated look. Finally, don’t forget that foliage can be as interesting as flowers and usually lasts a lot longer. Be sure to include a variety of contrasting leaf textures, colours and shapes.

BIRD WATCH WITH STAN KENYON A permanent resident that brightens the Winter scene is the Grey Partridge, a game bird over centuries. It is fairly small and compact with a rounded body and small rounded head. First impressions in flight are of a grey-brown bird with obvious orange tail sides. Seen more closely, it has an orange-brown face and throat, finely barred grey breast and dark brown belly patch. Grey Partridges are gregarious birds, flocks or coveys keeping tightly together, though in mild February conditions they start to form pairs. When disturbed they rocket off with whirring wings but they are wary ground birds, preferring to freeze in the grass or run away

in good time. Open farmland with hedges is their typical habitat but they occur also on rough pasture, heathland and coastal dunes. Numbers have declined steeply in the last 50 years
nationwide, partly through changing farming methods. Grey Partridges are now scarce in the Dales though more numerous in the Vale of York and the Wolds. Small numbers can still be seen in the countryside near Leeds.

Surveying your lawn these days is not a pleasant occupation – after all the rain it is a sad sight and may even represent more of a moss pit than a lawn! And there is probably more bad weather on the way. What should you do? Pictured: David Lawless
We spoke to David Lawless, who runs Green Thumb North and North West Leeds, to find out what the experts say. “Lawn care can start at any time of the year”, he told us. “We continue to care for lawns throughout the Winter months – scarifying to remove thatch build up and aerating to relieve compaction. This allows the lawn to absorb the water, oxygen and nutrients needed to encourage deep root growth and sustain a healthy lawn. It’s not too early to start getting your lawn ready for the warmer months ahead!” GreenThumb is the original lawn treatment provider in the

UK with over 25 years experience and looks after the lawns of over 450,000 customers through its network of 220 branches nationwide. Its unique, fourstage treatment programme is finely balanced to ensure your lawn receives what it needs at the right time throughout the year and is tailored to each lawn’s requirements, ensuring the maximum benefit from each treatment. GreenThumb uses products not available from DIY outlets and garden centres and equipment that ensures even distribution. Many of its products have been specially

developed. The treatments target weeds, feed the lawn and control moss. What’s more, you’ll find that it not only costs less, but it is far more effective than doing it yourself. “We are happy to provide advice on your current lawn care regime, as well as a no obligation quotation with comprehensive written lawn analysis report”, said David. “No matter what state your lawn is in, we are happy to nurse it back to health!” For further information, call David on 07584 147070 or 0113 277 7299, email leedsnorth@ greenthumb.co.uk or visit www. greenthumb.co.uk

David O. Russell has established himself as one of the most talented directors working in Hollywood today and has been on quite a roll these last few years with The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook both garnering awards aplenty, and with American Hustle, his hugely enjoyable vintage true life conman caper, he shows no sign of slowing down. Rather than the conventional ‘Based on a True Story’ or ‘inspired by Real Events’ the movie opens with the disclaimer ‘Some of This Actually Happened’ as if challenging the audience to swallow the convoluted tale. Based loosely on the 1978 FBI ABSCAM operation where corrupt politicians were lured into accepting bribes by using a fake sheik (a technique later employed by British tabloid newspapers), the film follows small time grifter, Irving Rosenfeld (Bale) who’s been making a reasonable illicit profit from bad loan scams when he meets and falls for the sultry Sidney (Amy Adams). Sidney enhances and finesses Irving’s scam operation by styling herself as minor royal Lady Edith Greensly replete with faux British accent and alleged prestigious banking connections in London. When the pair is caught out by ambitious FBI agent Richie
February2014 Area B.indd 36
DiMaso, he recruits them to use their devious expertise to ensnare crooked political figures in an elaborate sting operation, the key to which is the entrapment of decent and straight shooting New Jersey mayor, Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner). Polito’s
with its

motivation for pursuing the investment from the phony sheik is his desire to revitalise the gaming industry of Atlantic City, an ambition which inevitably draws the attention of the mob. An already risky endeavour is further complicated by the involvement of Irving’s volatile wife, Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence), a loose cannon Irving brilliantly describes as ‘the Picasso of passive-aggressive karate’. As the stakes rise ever higher and the risks multiply and escalate, all involved seem set on a collision course with destiny. American Hustle is a class act indeed. Impeccably styled to the hilt with its 70’s period detail and boasting one of the finest ensemble casts in recent memory. It’s probably inevitable that the film will draw comparisons to Scorsese, particularly Goodfellas and Casino and the similarities are noticeable, what with the 1970’s setting, the swooping camerawork, vintage soundtrack selection and multi-character voice-over. But, for all that, Hustle doesn’t join the ranks of the myriad Marty imitators and can more than stand on its own merits. It’s difficult to pick a standout performance from among the cast

Executive PA Medical Secretary Legal Secretary Web Designer Accounting Technician Book-keeper Administrator Office Manager (who seem to be becoming Russell’s regular company of actors) as everyone is excellent in this film. Christian Bale turns in another of his trademark methodical physical transformations for the role of Irving. We’ve seen the emaciated, skeletal Bale of Rescue Dawn and The Machinist, the buff, chiselled and ripped Bale of American Psycho and the Dark Knight films, now behold the pot-bellied, comb-over/toupe sporting Bale of American Hustle. Not his best look, to be honest, but it helps to imbue Irving with an oddly appealing pathos. Amy Adams, as the steely Sidney/Lady Edith, again displays the hard-edged sass that made her so watchable in The Fighter. Following impressive turns in Silver Linings Playbook and The Place Beyond the Pines, Bradley Cooper is clearly no longer just “that Hangover guy” and has emerged as an actor of some considerable chops. His keyed-up, frenetic Richie is a compelling train wreck waiting to happen. Jennifer Lawrence, currently (and quite understandably) everyone’s sweetheart, is fantastic as the unhinged and manipulative Rosalyn and delivers some of the film’s biggest laughs. In terms of setting, style, direction, performance and some exemplary work by the wardrobe, hair and make-up team the film is virtually note-perfect throughout. This exhilarating and often blisteringly funny picture is surely set to become a contemporary cult classic.

Their music entwines the traditional and the modern, past and future with beautiful results. With their haunting songs, mesmerizing vocals and captivating sound, the group has sold over fifteen million records worldwide. They recently recorded their first studio album in fifteen years. John Cooper Clarke was recently named Q Poet Laureate at the Q Awards. This is the first such title awarded and cements him as one of the UK’s best loved and most important performance poets. He and a group of special guests will appear at Leeds Town Hall on Saturday 1st March, 7.30pm. John Cooper Clarke’s biting, satirical, political and very funny verse, delivered in a unique rapidfire performance style, resonated with the punk movement. He toured with all the seminal bands – The Sex Pistols, The Clash and Buzzcocks, and with Elvis Costello in the USA. He soon began to draw large crowds in his own right.

Today JCC remains a key orator of British society and his effect on modern music has been huge. His influence is heard in the satirical and keen social observations in the songs of the Arctic Monkeys. Alex Turner cites him as a huge inspiration, as witnessed when the band covered Wanna Be Yours on their fifth studio album AM. In addition, UK rapper and film maker Plan B asked John to appear in his directorial film debut Ill Manors. Their duet Pity The Poor Fellow appears in the movie and on the soundtrack. The inaugural Ilkley Film Festival, which will run from 14th – 16th February, recently announced that Dame Judi Dench would be the event’s official patron. “To get the support of Dame Judi Dench in our first year is fantastic and a real boost to our confidence”, said Martin Pilkington, festival director. “Ilkley is the perfect setting for a film festival, with great venues - all within walking distance of each other. I’m over the moon that we have been able to attract such terrific films and artists.” Highlights of the festival programme include Paul Merton presenting ‘Silent Clowns’, his acclaimed tribute to classic silent films, with piano accompaniment by Neil Brand (BBC4 Sound of Film). ‘Silent Clowns’ is a nostalgic compilation of extracts from the best silent comedians including Charlie Chaplin, Laurel & Hardy and Harold Lloyd. Best known as a panellist on Have I Got News For You? and Just a Minute, Paul’s infectious enthusiasm and
knowledge promises to create an excellent evening in the King’s Hall. Making its northern-most debut, will be the critically acclaimed ‘From the Sea to the Land Beyond’. Award-winning director Penny Woolcock has collated over 100 years of footage, drawn from the BFI National Archive, to create this beautiful film. Its soundtrack, recently chosen as The Times’ Album of the Week, will be performed live by

British Sea Power, combined with the natural sounds of seagulls, ships, and snippets of speech to create an uplifting cinematic experience. “Even though I am unable to attend this year’s event, I am looking forward to seeing the Ilkley Film Festival grow”, said Dame Judi. “Film plays such an important part in our everyday lives and the opportunity to celebrate it through film festivals such as this is something to be grasped. I’m extremely proud not only to be the official patron of the festival but also to see such an event taking place in Yorkshire. I will be keeping my eye on the festival and hope to make it to one in the future.” The King’s Hall on Station Road and Ilkley Playhouse, Weston Road, will be turned into working cinemas over the Valentine’s Day weekend. Bianca Gerald - The Butterfly EP This debut EP from local newcomer, Bianca Gerald, announces the emergence of a singer-songwriter of great promise, combining mainstream appeal with the suggestion of a slightly more leftfield and idiosyncratic approach to Millennial Soul. Lead track, Save Me, builds on the foundation of a pulsating piano riff with processed beats and lush strings. Bianca’s voice is wreathed in spacey reverb and the subtlety and spaciousness of
the arrangement and production frame the vocal perfectly. Beautiful Something works with a similar sonic template, radio-friendly piano balladry augmented by Electronica/Trip-Hop touches. The song highlights Gerald’s understated vocal talents, particularly her keen sense of melody and phrasing. These two tracks seem to present Bianca Gerald’s signature sound; highly listenable, poppy, Nu-Soul with intriguing rhythmic underpinnings. But, for me, it’s the closing sub-two minute oddity Open Your Eyes that hints at more interesting things to come. The foreboding intro ushers in clattering, clanging syncopated beats over which skips Gerald’s slightly staccato vocal and the unexpected strangeness of
the song shows Gerald to be one unafraid of thinking outside the conventional Pop box, my only criticism being that the track is too teasingly brief. With a highly developed ear in terms of production and arrangement and an effortlessly evocative vocal style, Bianca Gerald strides confidently onto the scene with this first release which, having piqued my interest, makes me excited at the prospect of seeing her live. The launch event for The Butterfly EP takes place at The Wardrobe on Sunday 23rd February.

Early in 2012, singer/songwriter Rupert Strong released a single entitled ‘Always’ to help boost funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. Rupert’s involvement was prompted by the death of his grandmother who had a long struggle with Alzheimer’s. The Guardian picked up on his family’s experience and this led to Al Jazeera International asking him to appear via satellite link from BBC Leeds. With a huge worldwide audience, this was great exposure for the charity.

Recently the UK Government used its presidency of the G8 to host a global summit on dementia research in London and health ministers from G8 countries discussed how they could coordinate dementia research efforts across the world. Rupert has released two critically acclaimed albums, the most recent being ‘Chasing The Night’, produced by Will Jackson (The Kaiser Chiefs, Embrace, The Cribs, The Music). This album has attracted massive online support and press recognition. Last year he appeared at festivals all over the country, and his music video for ‘Never

Rupert is currently back in the studio collaborating once again with Will Jackson on his third album, due out later this year.

A few months ago the Chief Officer of NHS Leeds North Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) told North Leeds Life about how the three CCGs, now responsible for NHS Health Care in the city, needed the public to be involved in the new set-up. A member of the Patient Assurance Group (PAG) of the NHS Leeds West CCG tells how one aspect of this public participation is taking shape. “Last Autumn I spotted an invitation to apply to join the PAG of the CCG in my part of the city. I thought it sounded interesting, although like most people at that time I wasn’t sure exactly what the CCGs were actually going to do with the NHS from April 2013
onwards. I was surprised when I was accepted, and went along to the first meeting with some trepidation. So, I discovered, did all the other dozen or so members. What was initially daunting and eventually exciting was that there was no clear blueprint for our role, only that we were there to ensure that for any new project proposed to the CCG there had first been sufficient and thorough public consultation. We tend to think that faceless bureaucrats make the decisions that affect us all according to what they think should happen, so the chance to make sure we have a say was to be grabbed with both hands. The officers supporting the Group were also feeling their way, but after the first few meetings a working pattern began to emerge. What usually happens is that the health professionals responsible for each project attend a monthly meeting and explain just what consultation has taken place. The PAG members then offer any comment and decide if they feel enough has been done. It’s very much a two
way process. The professionals are realisinxg what sort of involvement with patients and public the lay members are expecting, and are reacting accordingly. The work load is gradually increasing, and since inevitably some members have moved or dropped out when the work turned out to be not quite what they were expecting, there’s the opportunity for new people to get involved. So, if this valuable work appeals to you, go to the NHS CCG website for your part of the city (either North or West) where you’ll find details of how to apply to get involved.” Trevor Thewlis Patient Assurance Group

(age 8+) on Saturday 15th February at 2 and 4pm. Tumblewater is not a welcoming place unless you’re an undertaker or umbrella salesman! Twisted land owner Caspian Prye controls everyone and everything. Fearless orphan Daniel Dorey stumbles into this world, armed only with his wits and a satchel of spine-chilling stories. Can he survive long enough to tell his tales? Full of laughs, frights and live music. (£8/£6, family ticket £24) Horse and Bamboo Theatre presents a gorgeously rendered re-telling of the classic

Designed for children aged four and up and their families, the show is presented by Engine House and Lakeside, with music and songs from Julian Butler. She just wanted to go to sleep but he was having none of it and just wouldn’t settle down. Grandma’s attic is far too exciting for sleeping! And when you start acting out your favourite fairytale who knows what will happen? For tickets call 0113 213 7700 or visit www.wyp.org.uk

Monochrome LEAP Ahead! Six Allerton High School Year 12 students (Louis Klineberg, Ava Myers, Zoe Packter, Daniel Larkin, Harrison Pye and Uma Ramachandran) are taking part in the LEAP Business and Enterprise programme, and have formed a company called ‘Monochrome’.
Pictured: Edward Ziff, Manager Town Centre Securities presenting the trophy to Harrison Pye, Zoe Packter, Ava Myers, Louis Klineberg
Last September, they decided on who would take on which role, brainstormed ideas to identify what products to sell, and chose a name. They all agreed that the product would be clothing and they liked the concept of sticking to black and white, which led to the name. The next task was to design a logo and they settled on the roman numerals MMXIII representing the year the business was established and focusing on the initial ‘M’ for Monochrome, with the strapline ‘a classic twist for the modern era’. Money was raised through selling shares and products were sourced, designed and printed, ready for the first sale at Allerton High in November. Following this they secured a stall in ‘The

Light’ - their first venture out into the retail world! Monochrome won ‘Best Retail Stand’ at this year’s LEAP Winter Trade Fair at The Merrion Centre and is working towards more awards - the main aim being to win the overall LEAP competition! Alongside the sales, Monochrome is supporting local band ‘Headwire’, three of whom are past pupils of Allerton High. The group is currently working on six new designs. You can keep up to date with Monochrome’s progress via Facebook, Twitter (@ monochromeXIII), Instagram and Tumblr. The business will soon be online where you will be able to purchase all their latest designs.
Double Hockey Success for GSAL! Hockey players at The Grammar School at Leeds (GSAL) recently made school history when both the U-14 and U-16 secured places in the finals of the England Hockey National Schools Championships for Girls. This is the first time that any 11-a-side hockey GSAL team has reached the finals in this competition. The players saw off stiff opposition in the opening rounds and went on to become county and North East regional champions in both age groups. They faced an even tougher contest in the northern regional final, where both teams finished as runners up. To reach the national finals they faced play-off matches, in which the U-14s beat Bishop Stortford College and U-16s beat Trent College. They will battle it out for the national title at the finals between 25 and 27 February at Cannock Hockey Club
