ow, Chris Watson explores the undiscovered sonic landscape of the island in a new sound installation specially created for the Howard Assembly Room in Leeds and using an astonishing array of animal inhabitants and natural environments, composed from compelling wildlife sounds from his global archive.

Best known as the sound recordist for BBC programmes, including the awardwinning Frozen Planet, and described by the Guardian as ‘the daddy of wildlife and sound recording’, Chris Watson was also a founding member of the influential experimental music group Cabaret Voltaire and has released a number of albums of edited field recordings. The installation takes visitors on

a expedition - from shore to summit, dawn to dusk, all in a cycle of rhythm, sound and beautiful lighting that lasts around 20 minutes. From the swirling pulse of the currents around the island to the haunting siren song of whales and seals, the otherworldly cries of Manx shearwaters and the deep roar of black howler monkeys, Hy Brasil moves around the visitor in three dimensional life, through ambi-sonic sound, enhanced by gorgeously atmospheric lighting by Lighting Designer Tim Skelly. Hy-Brasil is at Howard Assembly Room from Friday 28th February – Saturday 15th March. It is open from 2 – 8pm, Tuesdays – Saturdays and runs on a 30 minute loop.

In 1877 a remarkable woman came to live and work in Leeds. Her name was Edith Pechey, already well known as one of the tiny band of intrepid women who had dared to challenge the medical establishment, fighting – and ultimately winning – a long and bitter battle to gain medical qualifications and be allowed to practise. When she arrived in Leeds she was one of only seven women in the country who had won the right to be registered as a doctor. Edith Pechey came originally from the village of Langham, Essex, the sixth child of the Baptist Minister, born in 1845. She inherited a love of learning from her parents, and her first work was in teaching, but her ambition was to study and practise medicine, particularly in the field of women’s health. Many women were dying in childbirth and infant deaths were commonplace, yet obstetrics did not feature in medical training, and medicine was a totally male preserve. She met other women prepared

Northern Ballet brings one of the world’s best-known icons, Cleopatra, back to the stage at Leeds Grand Theatre from Thursday 6th – Saturday 15th March. Premiered in Leeds in February 2011, Cleopatra toured extensively throughout the UK. It was seen by more than 54,000 people and generating more than £1 million at the box office. The ballet is choreographed by artistic director David Nixon to a score by celebrated composer Claude-Michel Schönberg, best known for Les Misérables and Miss Saigon. It charts Cleopatra’s sensational rise to power, her scandalous romances with the most powerful men in history, and her eventual downfall. “From the moment David Nixon suggested the ballet of Cleopatra, it took me five years to find an elusive spark of inspiration”, said Claude-Michel Schönberg. “I had to understand how sensuous the way of life was in Egypt, the opposite to the culture of Rome. I realised that the chaos of being in love with such a woman as Cleopatra put the Roman Emperor and his Empire in danger. That’s what the score is trying to reflect without falling into clichés associated with that era.” Cleopatra’s legend has captivated

generations. A universal style and beauty icon, she still inspires artists, designers and stylists. David Nixon explains: “I have been fascinated by the story of Cleopatra for a long time. Known internationally as a violinist, broadcaster, speaker and educator, Ruth has conducted orchestras in places as diverse as the Winter Palace in St Petersburg and the ruins of Sarajevo. In a programme designed to show the often neglected links between three major composers of the 18th century – Beethoven, Mozart and Haydn, Ruth will use the orchestra to illustrate the music with a short talk. Leeds Literary Prize 2014 Entries for the second biennial prize for unpublished fiction by black and Asian women writers living in the UK will close on 31st March 2014.

The prize was set up by Soroptimist International of Leeds three years ago, and the first awards were made in October 2012 at the Ilkley Literature Festival. The aim

Leeds Festival Chorus, with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, will perform the world premiere of ‘Deus noster refugium’ in Leeds Town Hall on Saturday 29th March.

The Chorus commissioned the piece from Scottish composer James MacMillan to mark the centenary year of the start of the Great War. MacMillan specialises in modern sacred music rooted in evocative biblical imagery, but also writes for opera, ballet, musical theatre, and choirs. In this case, he has taken Psalm 46 (God is our refuge and strength) as his inspiration. “The objective here is to continue the long tradition of marking armed conflicts with concerts of classical music and to provide something really special and significant for the audience”, said Simon Wright, the Chorus’s conductor and artistic adviser. “The Chorus is also honouring its commitment to the promotion of new music.” The programme also includes Mozart’s Masonic Funeral Music, Haydn’s Symphonie No 44, and Haydn’s Mass in Time of War. The Roundhay Art Trail on Sunday 27th April will demonstrate the diverse talents of visual artists working in Roundhay. Around 17 artists will open their workspaces and studios to visitors, from 10am – 4.30pm, the aim being to raise the profile of visual arts in LS8. The trail will include work in a wide range of styles, including painting, printmaking, photography, ceramics, glass, sculpture, jewellery and textiles, some of which will be available for sale. Participants include Mark Sofilas, who produces vibrant paintings, inspired by the rugged beauty of the Yorkshire coast. Sculptor Jon Vogler works in stone, wood, bronze and nontraditional materials, which

are displayed in his garden, demonstrating the charm of sculpture in an intimate space. Recently Jon has started casting small bronze figures of animals and athletes. He will also host Jo Dunn’s exciting watercolours in his summerhouse. Textile artists, Judy Merchant and Debbie Samuel create pictures rich in colour and depth, using fabric, paint, gesso and felt. Miriam Laville’s work is an investigation and response to organic forms such as dried vegetation, shells and flowers. She experiments with the media, building up surfaces with collage, gouache, varnish and oils, leaving other parts of the image simpler with suggestive lines. A route map with the profiles

Building on the success of last year’s festival, and continuing WYP’s artistic director James Brining’s vision for an innovative, forward thinking theatre that engages with its local creative community, TRANSFORM returns to the West Yorkshire Playhouse from 27th – 30th March. This year it takes place over one high-impact weekend, exploding into every nook and cranny of the Playhouse and beyond. Continuing to make Leeds a home for imaginative collaboration and experimentation, the Playhouse is commissioning and producing new work as well as hosting some of the UKs most innovative artists as guest performers. TRANSFORM also offers a snapshot of tomorrow’s performance today, in a unique series of works in progress, each developed at the Playhouse, and provides a platform for artist residencies, participatory events, discussion and celebration. As part of this year’s festival the Playhouse is working closely with local artists Selina Thompson and Hannah Bruce & Company to present two brand-new pieces of work, and continues an ongoing collaboration with Chris Goode & Company. Irish History Month, an initiative of the Leeds-based Irish Arts Foundation, is now in its eighth year. It aims to promote knowledge of Irish History and experiences in Britain and beyond, disseminating information on the many positive contributions that Irish people have made to British society, and introducing new audiences to the vibrancy of Irish arts, heritage, culture and history. Highlights in this year’s programme include concerts from Clannad & Mary Black at Leeds Town Hall (Wed 12th March), new London-based Irish band Crossharbour at Seven Arts, Chapell Allerton (Sat 1st March), and Michael McGoldrick, John Doyle & John McCusker in The Victoria Hall, Saltaire (Fri 7th March). On North Lane in Headingley is a little gem of a café, quietly serving up some of the freshest, tastiest food around.

e discovered it a couple of years ago and have returned again and again for their super fresh salads like Tabbouleh, Fatoush and Salatit Adass – teeming with fresh herbs, tomatoes, lentils, lemon juice and olive oil. Or one of their Chef’s Specials with lightly marinated chicken, lamb or prawns – platters that included batata harra, hummus falafel and salad. Building on the success of last year’s festival, Left Bank Leeds and Manjit’s Kitchen, an award winning Punjabi street food caterer that has been wowing people in Leeds for over five years, are joining up once more to bring you a flavour of all things street. This is a celebration of award-winning street food, music, art and bazaar, brought in from the streets of Leeds and beyond! The festival takes place on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th April, from noon until 1am on Saturday and midnight on Sunday. There will be food and art stalls, workshops and showcase performances for all ages during the day, followed by the legendary ‘Stir it Up’ on Saturday evening, and local bands and DJs on Sunday.

Eating Leeds!, a twelve month project that has just started, aims to collect a vast amount of information from Loiners to create a cookery blog and book that will benefit both residents and local businesses. People are being asked to submit their favourite recipes, and tell Eating Leeds all about their favourite places to buy food, and how to use their favourite ingredients. Recipes will be tried out by the Eating Leeds team, documented and added to the blog, complete with links to the cheapest place in Leeds to find the ingredients, cost per dish and step-by-step instructions for the less common cooking methods. Each person will be credited for their submission and the most popular recipes will be compiled into a book, for release in 2015. With a team of five, Eating Leeds aims to cover the best of what Leeds has to offer. “We are lucky to have a city full of amazing vegetable shops, spice traders and markets bursting with fresh meat, fish and local produce”, they told us. “We’re looking for recipes, places to shop locally to get the freshest and cheapest foods, and tips for growing your own. meetings (which like Full City Council Meetings are open to the public) sometimes leave the Civic Hall and come out into the areas we represent. The Outer North East Area Committee makes a visit to Alwoodley on Monday 17th March, 6pm at Treetops Community Centre. Should you wish to come it would be great to see you. There will be an Open Forum part of the meeting for members of the public to speak about particular concerns. Last year in Wetherby, there was a good public turn out, so … come on Alwoodley, let’s show what a really good attendance at a meeting looks like! A particular concern of the Trading Standards Team is the way that rogue traders will prey on anyone, but particularly on elderly and vulnerable people. People can become repeat victims with perpetrators returning time and again to do unwanted and unnecessary jobs and demanding recurrent payments until they think all the life savings of their confused and vulnerable victims have gone. A listing in a classified directory offers no reassurance to the public, as advertisers are not vetted. Ironically an advert offering an OAP discount should be treated with particular suspicion as it may simply be seeking to win the trust of a potential victim. And it is not just the elderly

- one scam involved cold callers offering to replace Tarmac. The victim made the mistake of letting a cold caller quote before definitively saying no. The next day she returned to find her drive dug up but with no one in sight. She contacted the mobile number she had for the business and received an apology for the ‘misunderstanding’ and the offer of a heavily discounted price. Once the money was paid, the trader vanished leaving the drive still dug up. The moral of the story is not to engage at all with cold callers. As far as possible, use traders from a source that you trust.

The Rotary Club of Roundhay is the driving force behind an innovative project in a very poor part of Southern India. Working with the Sylvia Wright Trust, the club has funded a new IT room in the Sylvia Wright school, which provides for 210 profoundly deaf children in Tamil Nadu. Sylvia, a former Leeds nurse, moved to India in 1982 and runs a 220-bed hospital, two day centres for 80 severely disabled children, the residential school for profoundly deaf youngsters, and a Nursing College for 80 students. Rangammal School already offers an excellent traditional education, but deaf pupils were excluded from IT education because of a lack of computers

and equipment. Roundhay Rotary, District 1040 and The Rotary Foundation have raised almost £11,000 to set up a new IT room with 30 networked computers, visual aids and internet access.

They can now participate in national IT exams and will acquire skills which will help them significantly in the future. The facilities can also be used in the evenings by the 80 student nurses being trained in the adjacent Florence Nightingale Nursing College. I Want a Concert! Last Wish of a Well Loved Teacher Anne Margaret Brown (née Vaughan) was born in Leeds in 1936. She was a keen athlete and competed for Yorkshire in UK athletic competitions. But the real love of her life was teaching. She attended Doncaster Teacher Training College (19541956) and her first job was at Chapel Allerton C of E School. Her reference from the headmistress read: “Miss Vaughan is very capable, very hard-working, and anxious to provide every possible means and apparatus which will help the children to be interested in and love their school work. She has a delightful manner and it is always a joy to go into her class.”

She married in St Matthew’s Chapel Allerton before heading down south to raise a family and then return to teaching. She was an innovator and was prepared to go to great lengths to bring out the best in the hundreds of children she taught - even building a pottery kiln from scratch so that her pupils could learn from every stage of the process. She passed away last October, a much loved teacher, mum, grandma, friend and neighbour. Her family discovered an intriguing note in which she listed ten of her favourite songs to be played on her passing and the simple message ‘I want a concert!’ Her eldest son, Chris, decided it would be fitting to return to Chapel Allerton on her birthday to honour her wishes. The vicar of St Matthews, Revd David Robinson, kindly agreed to host the Memorial Service and Concert. And, Rachel

New Community Garden Project in Roundhay Improvements to a community space in Roundhay have been made possible thanks to support from local councillors on the East Inner Area Committee, who have given £5,750 to the Gledhow Lane Residents’ Association for the continued upkeep of communal land on their street. The community group is hoping to transform the piece of abandoned land into a recreational space for the whole community. The funding will help to employ a tree surgeon, and carry out repairs to the well-used path, which is full of pot- holes. They also have plans to plant a fruit orchard and vegetables for the whole community to enjoy. “It is a Council priority to provide more urban green spaces so we are delighted to have been able to provide this funding”, said Councillor Sharon Hamilton. “The restoration of this land will provide a great space for children and the wider community. And, the fruit orchard and vegetables to be planted will improve the wellbeing and quality of life of the residents, by providing them with a healthy food source that they can nurture.”

One hundred fish and chip shops across the country recently smashed the National Federation of Fish Friers (NFFF) ‘Chip in for Charity’ fundraising target of £10,000 for the Fishermen’s Mission. The fundraising took place on a single day, commemorating the NFFF’s official 100th anniversary on 11th November 2013. When the NFFF asked if the shops would like to raise £100 each, the response was overwhelming. The NFFF itself raised funds by cooking over 100 portions of fish and chips for local pensioners at their head office training school in Meanwood. “It is fantastic to have exceeded the £10K target”, said Chris Hirst, Trusts and Corporate

Roundhay Park – Home to Rare and Exotic Trees In Roundhay Park you’ll find walnut trees, a mulberry tree and a Deodar Cedar, the national tree of Pakistan! These are just three of the many rare and exotic trees included in two Tree Trails devised by The Friends of Roundhay Park. The Trails take you around the lawned areas between The Mansion and The Roundhay Fox which were originally planted as an arboretum. Each Trail takes around 30 minutes to complete and they can be linked into one longer, circular route.

A number of roles are available, including supporting fundraising events around Leeds, cheering on participants, setting up and running stands, and registering participants. Fundraisers could also support street and store collections and promote events and activities. They are also looking for collection box coordinators, responsible for placing collection boxes

A chance remark expressing regret that young people were no longer taught to recognise different types of trees, inspired Friends of Roundhay Park (FoRP) to try and rectify this by developing their tree trails. Over a twelve-month period, a group of volunteers each ‘adopted’ their own trees, which they photographed throughout the year. Their task was to capture detailed pictures of the bark, buds, fruit, leaves and general setting at each season. The area was also carefully surveyed and mapped and all trees measured. BIRD WATCH WITH STAN KENYON One of the most colourful ducks, now resplendent in breeding plumage, is the Shoveler. It is medium-large with an outsized broad, shovellike bill which gives a frontheavy look. The male has a dark green head and chestnut flanks with a gleaming white breast. By contrast, the female is brown like a Mallard duck but is readily distinguished by the huge bill. Shovelers prefer shallow lakes, reservoirs, inland marshes and sheltered estuaries in Winter, and nesting on reedy lakes and pools in Summer. Surface-feeding, rather than diving ducks, they are constantly upending in the water. Often feeding in small parties, they

Any clumps which have spread too far or died off in the middle can be dug up and prised apart and healthy portions can be replanted in groups. The Tour de France will pass through Yorkshire in early July and there are plans to cover the county with yellow flowers. Here are my top three easy to grow suggestions of what to plant: Nasturtiums offer a range of fabulous yellow flowers from zesty ‘St Clements’ to the cool lemon of ‘Milkmaid’ and many varieties will trail or climb so they make excellent subjects for hanging baskets and containers. The flowers are edible too and make a glamorous addition to salads. Pot marigolds (Calendula) are quick to grow into bushy upright plants covered in orange or yellow daisy-like flowers. They too have edible flowers and make excellent companion plants for the vegetable plot as well as looking vibrant and sunny in flowerbeds and pots. Poached Egg Plants (Limnanthes) are low growing with delicate fern like foliage smothered with white edged yellow flowers. All three of these can be sown directly outside towards the end of the month when the soil has warmed up or started off in trays or pots on a cool windowsill. They should all be looking beautiful in time for the race.

Set in the Greenwich Village folk scene of the early 60s, the Coen Brother’s latest focuses on a fictional singer-songwriter based somewhat on Dave Van Ronk. Oscar Issac, in an attention grabbing, breakthrough role, plays the titular Llewyn Davis. As quietly assured of his artistic worth as he is disdainful of others who fail to meet his criteria for music worthy of respect, he doggedly pursues his musical ambitions facing disappointment and discouragement at every turn. A rootless drifter, down on his luck and out of pocket, Llewyn couch-surfs his way around those willing to tolerate him and seems unwilling or unable to make things any easier for himself. You suspect his refusal to compromise his integrity one iota means the greatest impediment to his success is of his own making. The film, like the character of Davis himself is somewhat aimless and meandering. Striking out on his own as a solo act after the abrupt and untimely end of his previous musical partnership, he becomes

We feel his exasperation with his disheartening misfortune while it’s clear he is his own worst enemy. It’s difficult to get on side with Llewyn and yet, when he picks up a guitar and begins to sing he just about redeems himself and comes close to convincing you that his self

belief and perseverance might be justified. The soundtrack, particularly the captivating live performance sequences, is excellent due to regular Coens collaborator, T-Bone Burnett (whom Oscar Issac has described as a ‘genius’ and ‘musical revolutionary’) on board as producer. The film, in both sight and sound, is an exquisitely handsome production, awash with nostalgia and melancholy, beautifully rendered by cinematographer, Bruno Delbonnel’s hazy focus and colour palette of muted greys, soft browns and blue. More of a mood piece than a narrative driven feature, Inside Llewyn Davis offers a glimpse

into the life of the character without tidy resolution or the redemptive clichés another ‘struggling artist’ movie may have opted for. We wonder if it’s a question of bad timing for Llewyn, operating in a musical niche that will soon explode globally with the arrival of the young Bob Dylan, or if maybe, he just doesn’t have what it takes. He seems trapped in a cycle of self-sabotage, doomed to toil forever in obscurity. One could argue that, like the musical career of Llewyn Davis, the film doesn’t really go anywhere and perhaps that’s the point. Whatever the case, I found it a trip well worth taking and can see it becoming one of my favourite Coen Brothers’ films.

A former Leeds Metropolitan University film student has been shortlisted in the best live action short category at the 2014 Academy Awards. MA Film and Moving Image graduate, Phil Wood, was Director of Photography on The Voorman Problem, a 13-minute piece starring Martin Freeman and Tom Hollander. “It’s incredible to have shot an Oscar-nominated short”, said Phil, who graduated from the Northern Film School in 2005. “I was filming when the nominations were announced and

it wasn’t until my camera assistant whispered in my ear that I realised ‘The Voorman Problem’ had been nominated. “I have very fond memories of my time at the Northern Film School. Looking back it was the ideal springboard for a career in Cinematography. The real plus point was not only that I left with the knowledge and skills of my craft, but that I also had a very

extensive portfolio of work that I could immediately show to potential employers.” The film, based on an excerpt from the novel Number9dream by David Mitchell, portrays Voorman (Hollander) as a prisoner who believes he’s a god. Psychiatrist, Dr Williams (Martin Freeman), is called in to examine the patient, who has managed to convince the other prisoners that he’s telling the truth. The film has had 24 official selections at film festivals around the world so far and has won Best Live Action Short at the St Louis International Short Film Festival and Best Screenplay at the Corona Fastnet Short Film Festival. It has also been nominated for a BAFTA in the short film category.

Egokiller Release 52 Singles for Homeless Charities! Local Jam-Band, Funk-Rock outfit and groove merchants, Egokiller are currently knee deep in an ambitious and impressive project. Last July they set themselves the challenge of releasing a single every week for a year to raise money for homeless charities Crisis, The Big Issue North and Shelter. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a timely cause as the strain of the economic downturn, combined with radical welfare cuts and growing housing market pressures mean increasing numbers of people are becoming homeless, with families and younger people being the hardest hit. Members of the band have personally struggled with homelessness or know someone who has so they decided to campaign and contribute in the best way they know how - through music. By releasing a single weekly on themes as broad as love, immigration, health and of course homelessness itself, the potential to gain peopleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attention and support is huge. It is also a fun way to contribute. For a little bit of money people get some great music and know their money is going to help people who need it. The Egokiller sound is freeform and improvisational but grounded in solid hooks and tight grooves. The material for the singles takes shape on the fly in the studio and, as the band is currently without a full time drummer, thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s often a little shake up with the personnel. So far the band has played with

seventeen drummers, including BBC Radio host Alan Raw and ex Groove Armada drummer Joe Herzberg. The first single, Harms Sway, was released last July. The band will continue to release a single a week until August and

MIK ARTISTIK’S EGO TRIP The gig was meant to start at 9pm so we headed down to The Grove Pub in plenty of time, getting there at 8.30pm. Not only was Mik singing away already, we couldn’t even get into the room! That says something about this subversive, unique entertainer. Amidst many dirty looks and harshly hissed orders to ‘MOVE’ we pushed our way in and held our ground. This was my first Mik Artistik experience and is unlikely to be my last. Backed by the excellent Benson J Walker on bass and Jonny Flockton on lead guitar, they ripped through songs like ‘Rex’ (about a stray dog that had adopted him then virtually caused a custody battle when his relationship broke up), ‘Turning into Dad’, and ‘Cards on the Street’ –about being ignored by the young as they handed out club flyers on Briggate! There were many more favourites - ‘Window Cleaner’, ‘Rastafarian Wiring’, ‘Sudoku

Mik has a huge following, which includes people like Keith Allen, Johnny Vegas and John Cooper Clarke Man’. People were joining in, and a large contingency from Batley was in fine voice. Mik describes what he does as Rock and Roll Stand Up, a friend called it ‘comedically poignant’, which is a good description. Like a lot of the best stand up, Mik’s material is inclusive and relatable and could accurately be called ‘tragi-comic’. The songs may be deeply sad, yet at the same time gut-bustingly hilarious. He has a huge following, which includes people like Keith Allen, Johnny Vegas and John Cooper Clarke. CRYBABYCRY OPORTO, LEEDS TUES, JAN 28, 2014 CryBabyCry have been on my musical radar for well over a year, but despite the best intentions I’d previously failed to catch them live. Knowing the players involved (Jonny Firth and Rosie Doonan are both fine solo performers in their own right) I had good reason to assume they’d be well worth checking out. So, this particularly wet and miserable Tuesday night, having attended the launch and line-up announcement for Live at Leeds (looking very good, as it goes), I squeezed into a packedto-capacity Oporto and was treated to an electrifying set that exceeded my already high expectations. Describing themselves as The Black Keys meets Nancy Sinatra, CryBabyCry are a powerful three-piece whose tightly arranged tunes take in influences from the best of classic American music - Blues, Southern Rock, Gospel, Country, shades of Motown Soul - and are presented with a decidedly matter of fact, down to business Yorkshire attitude. Firth and Doonan share co-front person duties and instruments are swapped to and fro - both of them being equally at home on guitar and bass. They are backed on drums by the formidable Nici Todd, a fine-tuned percussive engine who is the very definition of ‘rock solid’, diligently pounding it out with never a beat, fill or cymbal clash out of place. It’s hard not to be impressed by the trio who display an easy confidence on stage

with intense chemistry and instrumental fluency. The lead and backing vocals of Doonan and Firth are perfectly complimentary and share the grit and brassy gutsiness that suits their Bluessoaked material. Those lucky enough to be in attendance went away with a limited edition three track CD included in the price of admission. And a very fine recording it is too, comprising of a trio of the set’s many highlights; the solid groove of the riff-driven Go Go with its stomping chorus, the slinky, sultry, bass-heavy The Tramp and the twangy, countrified soul of Lovely Bones. Extremely limited numbers of this debut EP, which offers a tantalizingly teasing taste of the album to come, are available at Jumbo and Crash record stores in the city centre. I advise you snap one up while you can. CryBabyCry aren’t looking to break new musical ground, nor are they interested in reinventing the wheel, but they sure as hell know what a classic tune sounds and feels like. In this regard they play to their considerable strengths, the vocals, rhythm and fretwork are all faultlessly top flight stuff. A band with an abundance of infectious riffs and hooks and oodles of charisma, CryBabyCry are a captivating and thrilling live act and deserving of every success. Long may they Rock!

Yorkshire is Best Cycling Destination in the World! The Tour de France may still be months away but it’s all kicking off in Yorkshire already!

No one will be able to say that Yorkshire didn’t take advantage of the Tour de France spotlight. At the end of January Welcome to Yorkshire launched its Yorkshire Cultural Festival with a fantastic programme of events lined up across the county. And the Festival of Cycling at Harewood House is turning the Tour weekend into a massive party and celebration of cycling. According to Olympic silver medal cyclist, Lizzie Armitstead, ambassador for the Yorkshire Festival of Cycling at Harewood House, Yorkshire is the best cycling destination in the world! Of course, Stage 1 of Le Grand Depart passes right through her home town, Otley, on 5th July on its way to Harrogate. She will be celebrating the occasion at Harewood.

“There’s such a buzz about cycling in Yorkshire at the moment”, said Lizzie. “As a county we’ve produced some of the best cyclists in the world and we’re very proud of our cycling history. For me, this is the best cycling destination in the world; the scenery’s beautiful and the terrain is tough, relentless even, but it’s training in these conditions that makes Yorkshire’s cyclists such strong competitors. “I’m really looking forward to being a spectator for once and enjoying the race with my family and friends. We’ll be getting together at the Yorkshire Festival of Cycling to take part in as many events as we can, from the time trials and family rides to the mountain biking. The three-day event will be a celebration of all things cycling; ticket-holders can camp in Harewood’s historic grounds, see the Tour first hand as the peloton races up the front drive and past the house, and then watch the action live on big screens. People will be able to follow in the riders’ tracks on organised rides and take part in a host of other cycling and running events. A Shopping Expo and plenty of music and cycling-related entertainment - including a thousand-seat Cycle Cinema and talks from the UK’s favourite cycling authors – are just a few of the attractions that will keep visitors entertained off their bikes. Sustrans Joins NVA and Phoenix to Create Ghost Peleton As part of the Yorkshire Festival, Sustrans has joined up with Scottish public arts charity NVA and Phoenix Dance to create ‘Ghost Peleton’, an exciting participatory artwork incorporating a team of 50 road racers, stunt cyclists and largescale projection of dancers all using remote controlled light suits to produce stunning live choreography. Following the success of NVA’s ‘Speed of Light’, which choreographed massed runners in sites as diverse as Edinburgh and Yokohama Docks, Leeds and Yorkshire are the new canvas for light in motion using cycling. Little Hiccups Lines Up the Challenges! Little Hiccups, a Leeds charity that supports families of children with disabilities, has set itself a fundraising target of £15,000 for this year.

Big Brownie Birthday at St Andrew’s The first Brownies pack at St Andrew’s Shaftesbury Avenue, Roundhay, was set up in 1935. They celebrated the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Brownies by leading the Sunday morning service on 26th January.

To achieve this is has recruited a team of over 60 who will set out to conquer some of the toughest challenges in the North in 2014. These include the Major Series, Tough Mudder, Electric Run, Spartan Race, Colour Run, Leeds 10K and Half Marathon, and Yorkshire Triathlon and Warrior events. The aim is to raise enough money to buy two specialist, all-terrain wheelchair buggies that families can borrow. These wheelchairs are amazing! With one of these children will be able to experience the beach, parkland and forest. The buggies also attach to a bike as a trailer, convert into

“The Brownies worked hard to prepare for the service”, said Assistant Brownie Guider Rachel Murray. “They spread out a timeline they had worked on over several weeks. Two special dates were 1914, when Brownies were established, and 1935 when the first pack was started at St Andrew’s by 17 year old Guide Betty Clark, who is still a stalwart of St Andrew’s. At the time she was told by national headquarters that she was too young to lead Brownies – so, she helped with the Brownies and led the Cubs instead! “At the service, the Brownies chose the hymns, led the singing, read prayers that they had written themselves, and gave the blessing by reciting Brownie Bells.”

The Thackray Medical Museum recently unveiled its latest family exhibition ‘Skeleton Science’, which is on loan from Durham University Museums.

The exhibition draws on the work of bio-archaeologists and how they can tell us more about our ancient past by looking at skeletal remains. The life of a skeleton can be traced in the laboratory, exploring disease, injury, family relationships and incredible journeys. As part of the display, you will come face-to-face with an ancient skeleton and discover how this cutting-edge science is helping to solve some of the greatest archaeological and medical mysteries.
