DEAR READERS,

As we hurtle towards Christmas, November is definitely the month when we all seem to shift up a gear and try and focus on gift giving….while trying to also take in some of the numerous shows, pantos, concerts, fairs and charity events that mark this time of year. We urge you to shop local and take advantage of the excellent independent shops in our area and the many Christmas fairs. Christmas is also a great time to support your favourite charity and most have great gift suggestions on their websites, including Fairtrade gifts. This month we celebrate Claire O’Hara, our very own World Champion kayaker, whose progress we have been watching over the past few years. The

Leeds Gathering is bringing Irish music and culture to the city once more; Jake Chapman comes to Chinwag to chat about his life and art; and Northern Ballet’s ‘The Nutcracker’ returns to enthrall audiences. In December we hope to take a look at seasonal food. We look forward to receiving all your news and events – please ensure news and notices reach us by 1st November and advertising by 6th November (1st & 4th December for January edition). We look forward to hearing from you.

Kind regards, Carole, Jack and the team.

n Saturdays and Sundays from 28th November – 27th December wander through the estate to see the trees twinkling with light and the Abbey all aglow, then stop by the abbey to catch some live festive music. The elves’ have organised Christmas workshops at Swanley Grange at weekends from 28th November – 20th December, where you can make Christmas decorations, write your wish list and send it off to the North Pole. And, of course, there’s Father Christmas’s Grotto to visit at the same time.

ELIZA CRAVEN GREEN (1803-1866) POET, WRITER, ACTRESS

With one famous exception her work is now forgotten, but in her day Eliza Craven Green, born and resident in Leeds most of her life, was a prolific and well-loved writer, her poems and stories published regularly in journals and newspapers. Hers was a life of light and shadow: success and tragedy, poverty and menial work, and finally quiet seclusion. Her poems reflected her experience: sometimes topical but mainly focussed on the trials, griefs, joys and hopes of every day life. They had a wide appeal, particularly for women across all walks of life. he was born Elizabeth Craven in 1803, the first child of Elizabeth and John Craven. He was a Leeds auctioneer and valuer, who set up an ambitious new business in Briggate, while his well-educated wife planned to start a school. But this comfortable start to Eliza’s life ended in trauma. By 1809 her father was in Leeds Workhouse, the fate of debtors who deserted their families. He absconded and vanished, under threat of imprisonment. Did he escape to the haven of the Isle of Man, safely outside English jurisdiction? Did his family follow? No one knows, but the story goes that Eliza spent part of her youth there, and by 1823 she and her sister Ann were popular young actresses at the theatre in Douglas. Eliza was just 20, Ann 16. A year later, Eliza moved as an actress to Manchester, but she retained a strong emotional attachment to her ‘fairy island’. In 1825 she published in Douglas ‘A Legend of Mona’, a romantic tale in verse – poetry had been a childhood love. So her literary career began, and she was drawn into a circle of Manchester poets and writers who were to remain her friends. But everything changed in 1828 when she married James Green, a fellow actor from London, and they moved back to Leeds. James Green continued touring as a comic actor but between engagements worked as an innkeeper. Life must have been hard, particularly as over the next years Eliza bore six children. Three died in infancy. In her later writing she often returned to the poignant theme of the loss of a child, a common experience at that time when so many babies died and cholera and other diseases were rife. The family lived in one of the cramped inn yards off Kirkgate, where conditions were appalling, dark and fetid, with open drains and only a shared pump for water.

Worse followed. By the 1850s, James Green had disappeared to a new life in London. He changed his name and acquired another ‘wife’. He took with him their young son Henry (later to become a top theatrical designer) and abandoned Eliza and their two daughters in Leeds. They had to work as milliners/dressmakers to make ends meet, but Eliza could make extra money from her poetry and short stories, which found an appreciative audience in national journals like the women’s fashion magazine ‘Le Follet’. In Leeds the ‘Intelligencer’ newspaper (forerunner of the Yorkshire Post) also published her poems regularly – their style and subjects suited the editor, Christopher Kemplay, who wanted his paper to reflect cultured family values. He may have assisted her move around 1857 to a more comfortable house in St John’s Place, near his own home. Eliza’s poems often covered topical subjects – the Queen, Florence Nightingale, Sir Peter Fairbairn, the Crimean War – but her inspiration mainly came from

‘simple thoughts rising spontaneously from solitary walks or by the household hearth… amid humble home duties, delights and sorrows.’ Poems on ‘Children Sleeping’, ‘The China Tea-cup’, ‘Sunset’, ‘Flowers’ set the tone. To the modern reader her poems may seem sentimental and florid, but they struck a chord of comfort, hope, and understanding. Her poem on a hawthorn branch as a symbol of hope for girls working in a dreary workroom ‘through the night of toil’ inspired several factory girls to write to thank her. Her work won widespread recognition and royal approval – a bursary from the Queen. In 1858 she published a collection of poems: ‘Sea Weeds and Heath Flowers or Memories of Mona’, including many of her published poems and her ‘golden memories’ of the Isle of Man, most potently the nostalgic ballad ‘Ellan Vannin’. Set to music, it was to become and remains an emotive anthem for the island. (See www. manxliterature.com.) She died in 1866 at 80 Meanwood Street, and was buried at Woodhouse. There were many appreciations of her graceful style and ‘true and noble sentiments’. In her own words - ‘So Death walks with me, an Angel Friend/ The Guide to the Land where all Sorrows end’.

On 22nd September Leeds City Council published its ‘Site Allocations Plan Draft’. These documents set out detailed plans for housing, employment, retail and green space until 2028. Included in this is a ‘review’ of Leeds’ Green Belt land.

The Site Allocations Plan Draft is currently available for public consultation and comments

Green Belt sites to be lost In all, 246 Green Belt sites are set to be lost to development. The ‘review’ makes provisions for replacing these, but the newly added sites are worthless as Green Belt. They include three small sites which, by the Council’s own assessment, do not serve the purposes of Green Belt as outlined by government. The bulk of replacement Green Belt will come from a large area of rural land near Wetherby in Outer North East Leeds. The enormity of this area means that, despite losing 246 sites across the district and adding just three, the net size of Leeds’ Green Belt will actually increase!

Preserving the character of towns The Council claims that the addition of the rural land to the Green Belt will fulfill one of the government defined purposes of Green Belt by ‘preserving the setting and special character of historic towns’. However, the land itself consists mainly of flat agricultural fields and is not adjacent to any buildings. Indeed, portions of the new Green Belt will be over a mile from the nearest town, so it is hard to see how an area this large and rural is necessary in preserving the character of towns. When the proposal was initially announced last year, Wetherby Councillor John Procter said: “As far as anyone on the ground is concerned there is no material change.”

Will planners opt for brownfield?

Have your say!

The Council further claims that by designating this rural land as Green Belt and hence protecting it from housing construction, they are forcing planners to look to brownfield sites elsewhere for future developments. This can hardly be seen as significant as a planning application for large-scale housing on the rural land has never had submitted. There is no indication that this land would be built on in the future. In any case, the swathes of Green Belt being built on in the Site Allocations Plan Draft discredit any notion that Green Belt status affords effective protection. Leeds City Council’s approach can be seen as part of a national trend encouraged by central government. Speaking on the Andrew Marr show, George Osborne commended Cambridge Council for taking the initiative to restructure their Green Belt, commenting: “Those powers already exist, but they’re not widely used. I’d like to see more of that.”

The Site Allocations Plan Draft is currently available for public consultation and comments can be submitted online. Relocating Leeds’ Green Belt is a region-wide issue that has slipped under the radar thus far. If you would like to see the entire Site Allocation Plan, visit www.leeds.gov. uk/council/Pages/Siteallocations-plan-publication. aspx, where you can also leave your comments. Leeds risks losing valuable Green Belt sites all over the city. The consultation is open until 16th November – so have your say now!

Kirkstall Road is almost unrecognizable from what it was ten years ago. The road has been improved, old buildings are being brought back into use, new buildings have sprung up, and and there has been an outbreak of development all around it. itting comfortably just ten minutes from the city centre, is Airedale House Business Centre which sprung into life four years ago. It has become a busy little hub for business and it recently expanded its fully serviced, air-conditioned offices from 23 to 30, with occupancy in each ranging from two to 14. The Duffield family has made it easy for progressive businesses to afford a professional, contemporary environment, with all the highly specified IT and facilities any business, large or small, could need. This is flexible, low cost, quality workspace, where it’s quick to set up, commitment can be short, there is a simple license - no leases, and costs are transparent, liberating finances and enabling agility and growth. “Since we opened the doors in February 2011, the Business Centre has had a real

vibrancy and buzz about it”, said Adam Duffield, director. “We have worked hard to achieve that – I like to think of us as a Malmaison for business!” The imposing, 120 year old industrial building has huge windows with fabulous views over the River Aire and 80 parking spaces. In addition, Airedale House has built the North’s flagship new design concept 1,750 sq. ft. drive through SUBWAY restaurant right next door – a great fit to the Centre as a break out, informal meeting place. Within the offices, there’s a 22-delegate boardroom and two eight person meeting rooms that are regularly also booked by people from outside the centre needing car parking and a business environment. “We’re in such a convenient location”, said Simon Duffield, director. “Airedale House sits right on the River Aire. There are lunchtime benches with magnificent river views, and just a short walk away is the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust Kirkstall Nature Reserve. Plus, literally next door, there are childcare facilities, three gyms, a supermarket, an M&S is opening down the road and, of course, there’s also a large cinema complex.” Walking around the Airedale House light, airy offices it’s easy to see the care and attention that went into its planning. This is a family affair, Adam and Simon are a friendly and visible presence in the building, managing the Centre on a day to day basis. “I am proud of my sons”, said Martyn Duffield, Chairman. “They are working really hard to ensure our tenants are happy, and that hard work is really paying off.”

We recently came across a clutch of personal items neatly secreted under drawer lining paper in a 1950’s freestanding kitchen unit that came our way. These included four old photographs and a driving license belonging to the couple that presumably owed both the unit and the photos. Apart from feeling touched and curious about the lives of these people, we were also left with a huge sense of responsibility, and an urge to return this treasure to the rightful owners or their family. he photos give a time-traveling glimpse of moments in the couple’s life. One shows what appears to be multi-generational trio of ladies enjoying a happy jaunt on the sea front while tucking into a bag of sweets (or is it chips?), and is entitled ‘Morcambe 1953’ – perhaps the young female owner of the sideboard with her mother and aunt or grandmother. Another shows a young, handsome chap – the owner’s husband as a youth, sporting an awesome 1940’s double-breasted zoot suit on the threshold of a front door with his friend looking equally as dapper in a Fairisle slip-over. We then time travel several decades ahead to another photo entitled ‘St Annes 1983’ to find the couple looking older, wiser and dare we say happier? Once again it’s on the sea front but with the sea behind them and the tide receding. Okay, so why are we getting all misty-eyed about a bunch of old photographs? At Blackbird Vintage we deal primarily with ‘old stuff’ as some of our customer’s call it, and we often have experiences like this. For example we are regularly asked if we buy things, the seller is usually middle aged, they refer to a parent who has recently died, or who

is no longer able to live independently. It is not uncommon for them to be in tears, and the experience is invariably brimming with poignancy. It reminds us that we’re not just dealing with old stuff, but with items are imbued with someone’s memories, and of lives lived. And so, we appreciate the beauty of the lining paper the owner chose for her kitchen drawers, the signs of wear and use on the Formica. That and the fact that she also loved and looked after it needs to be understood in the context of the item’s history.

YOU KNOW, THERE ARE ACTUALLY PEOPLE WHO HAVE DONE ALL THEIR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING BY JULY! For me, I need that nip in the air and the growing sense of anticipation to kick start me into Christmas shopping mode. Each year I try to discover new shops and find unusual, unique items. This really is the time to shop local, stroll down arcades, and venture a little further afield. Horsforth’s Town Street and New Road Side have a plethora of fascinating little shops; Chapel Allerton is well worth a mooch; and Otley could easily keep you occupied for the best part of a day! Of course it all has to be broken up with coffees, cakes, and lunches to keep your strength up and there is no lack of tempting destinations for those.

Chinwag, the monthly, laid back evening at Outlaws’ Yacht Club, that features unstructured chat with distinguished cultural icons about life, the universe and everything, will engage artist Jake Chapman of the Chapman Brothers in conversation on Thursday 12th November. ake and Dinos Chapman make iconoclastic sculpture, prints and installations that examine, with searing wit and energy, contemporary politics, religion and morality and they have exhibited all over the world. They first received critical acclaim in 1991 for a diorama sculpture entitled ‘Disasters of War’ created out of remodeled plastic figurines enacting scenes from Goya’s ‘Disasters of War’ etchings. Later they took a single scene from the work and meticulously transformed it into Great Deeds Against the Dead (1994), a life-size tableau of reworked fibreglass mannequins depicting three mutilated soldiers tied to a tree. Their most ambitious work ‘Hell’ (1999), an immense tabletop tableau, peopled by over 30,000 remodeled, two inch high figures, was tragically destroyed in the MOMART fire in 2004. But they made another, even more ambitious in scale and detail to replace it! Since then they have gone on to produce a fascinating variety of sculpture and graphic work. To date, Chinwag guests have included the likes of Irvine Welsh, record label owner Alan McGee, Viv Albertine from The Slits, musician Andrew Weatherall, writer and broadcaster James Brown, producer/DJ Justin Robertson, film director and DJ Don Letts and many more. Chinwag was founded by host Chris Madden, who grew up in the music industry becoming a DJ and pop video director. He left the music industry to become a psychotherapist and Chinwag gives him the opportunity to explore both.

Chinwag is all about just getting people to chat about their experiences

“Chinwag is all about just getting people to chat about their experiences”, said Chris. “I never know what I’m going to say or how it will begin. Each guest is free to bring as much of themselves as they are comfortable with, stories just evolve naturally.” Chinwag events support the MAP foundation, (musicandartsproduction.

ike was instrumental in the early development of the Blahs and his return marks an important milestone for the company. “I have them to thank for kicking off my career as a playwright”, said Mike “I wrote a series of plays for them which I still count among the best work I’ve ever done. It all began with the Blahs!” ‘Bag Dancing’ is touring nationally, mostly to schools and community venues. There are performances on Saturday 24th October at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton, and stage@Leeds on Tuesday 27th October, both of which include a talk by Mike on ‘The writer in TIE’. “Exploring themes of war, displacement, mental health, loss and loneliness with compassion and humour, this tour seems to be very timely and reflective of current world events”, said Deborah Pakkar-Hull, Blah’s Artistic

Director. “Rejuvenating Bag Dancing with Mike has reinforced our passion for helping young people to engage their imagination in learning.” Mike Kenny will also be the writer for ‘Partition’, a new work based on the partition of India and Pakistan that will form the heart of a large-scale international collaboration. Blah Blah Blah is a leading Theatre in Education Company. It creates high quality, participatory theatre with and for children and young people, using compelling stories to stimulate enquiry and exploration. Comedy theatre group, Land of Nod, have a new monthly residency upstairs at Milo Bar (opposite the Corn Exchange) in the centre of Leeds. They will be bursting the eardrum of truth with their topical sketch show ‘News Trumpet’ which looks at the past month’s news in a comic cacophony of discordant drama and syncopated song, on the last Sunday of every month, 8 - 9pm. The Land of Nod specialises in surrealist comedy with a satirical edge. They have performed numerous shows to critical acclaim in West Yorkshire and beyond, including the Edinburgh Fringe. They’ve also played the last four Chapel Allerton Arts Festivals. Land of Nod consists of Simon Lacy, Mike Nelson and Helen Buchanan. All sketches are written by Mike and influences include Big Train, League of Gentlemen, Mighty Boosh, Peter Cook and Vic and Bob. Sketches range from the surreal to the domestic and satirical. They are fond of shining a spotlight on the absurdities of middle England, political correctness and the hypocrisies of modern life.

Handel’s Messiah Comes to St Aidan’s Harrogate Choral Society will perform Handel’s Messiah in St Aidan’s Church, Roundhay Road, LS8, on Saturday 5th December.

The life and work of St Aidan offer an arresting counterpoint to The Messiah

he church is exceptional in that it has extensive mosaics illustrating the life of St Aidan, a 7th century Irish monk who was approached by the King of Northumbria to help in converting his subjects to Christianity. Aidan took up the challenge, and the murals show four phases of his life: his landing in Northumbria; feeding the poor; preaching the gospel; and his death. The mosaics, by eminent artist Frank Brangwyn, were achieved by using small pieces of coloured glass and were completed in 1916. Originally he had intended painting the scenes, but he realised that the polluting atmosphere in Leeds would soon disfigure

his work, so he suggested the more durable mosaic format. The life and work of St Aidan offer an arresting counterpoint to The Messiah, which is composed around a selection of texts from the Bible. The chorus ‘Their sound is gone out to all lands, and their words unto the ends of the world’ underlines the Saint’s reason for going to Northumbria. The second panel is illustrated musically by the contralto solo ‘He shall feed his flock like a shepherd’, whilst the chorus singing ‘The Lord gave the Word’ conveys the truth behind the third. Aidan’s death

is covered in the whole of the oratorio’s Part III, from the chorus ‘Since by man came death’ through to the mighty concluding chorus ‘Worthy is the Lamb’. In the two lateral walls of the chancel leading to the altar Brangwyn portrayed two groups with expressions of sorrow and toil: ‘Come unto me … and I will give you rest’. The Harrogate Choral Society, which is 150 strong, has a tradition of giving superlative performances of The Messiah. The professional soloists, and the resonant acoustics of St Aidan’s are sure to do it full justice. Brangwyn’s mosaics provide a visual focus, and the ambience of the church should lead to a profound musical and religious experience. A celebration of Irish arts and culture kicks off in Leeds from the 7th – 29th November. ozens of events, including music sessions, literary, film and educational events will place at venues across Leeds, bringing some of Ireland’s finest artists to the city. Organised by the Leeds-based Irish Arts Foundation, events are designed to appeal to Pictured: both those of an Irish Talisk background and people from the wider community with an interest in music and the arts. “The thinking behind the Leeds Gathering is to provide a platform for the Irish community in Leeds to showcase their rich and vibrant cultural traditions”, said Alison Childs, IAF Development Officer. “We are also interested in developing new audiences for Irish arts and culture.” This year the festival welcomes winners of the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Award, Talisk, who have already made a big impression on the folk music scene. Mohsen Amini (concertina), Hayley Keenan (fiddle) and Craig Irving (guitar) use their individual backgrounds in Irish and Scottish music to create an award winning sound. The trio’s energetic performances have landed them slots at some of Britain’s biggest festivals, including Cambridge Folk Festival, Celtic Connections, Fairport Convention’s Cropredy Festival and now the Leeds Gathering! Community projects and individuals can apply for grants and bursaries from the Ann Maguire Arts Education Fund, set up in April 2014 to honour the memory of local school teacher Ann Maguire. he Fund has raised over £200,000. Thanks to the support it has received, it can now expand its geographical remit to accept applications from community projects across West Yorkshire, as well as continuing to offer bursaries to individuals in Leeds. Managed by Leeds Community

Foundation, the Fund will continue to support young people through arts education activities, including drama, literature, poetry, singing, music and dance. It is also keen to see more applications which focus on the development of language skills through the arts. Bursaries of up to £500 will be

available for talented young people aged 11 – 18 in Leeds who, without financial support, would struggle to pursue their passions. Larger grants of up to £1,500 will be available for community groups and projects across West Yorkshire offering innovative and fun activities that involve young people in the arts. “My mother was passionate about getting people engaged with languages”, said Ann’s daughter Emma. “We hope to see more applications from projects that are actively developing young people’s skills in language in a fun and interactive way, through the arts. We also look forward to continuing to distribute arts bursaries and grants to the people who need it most.” Grants criteria and application forms can be downloaded from: www. leedscf.org.uk/ann-maguire-artseducation-fund/ For further details, or to donate to this great cause, visit: www.annmaguire. org

Leeds’ apparent bid for the title of ‘European Capital of Meat’ continues apace with the opening of premium steakhouse, Stockdales, on South Parade. Thankfully, although the city may be fast approaching ‘peak meat’, Stockdales gives the insatiably carnivorous among us ample reason to rejoice. t’s becoming increasingly difficult for new restaurants to distinguish themselves in Leeds’ ever more crowded and beef-fixated marketplace. Stockdales, however, has a few tricks up its sleeve that give it an edge. Chief among them is the fact that the company is established as a food producer and by owning and operating farms here in Yorkshire, they are their own suppliers. This lack of middleman gives Stockdales unrivalled control over their stock and its quality, particularly the star attraction - the delicious, sumptuous Wagyu beef. Due to its intense marbling that helps give the meat its rich flavour, Wagyu beef (which originated in Japan), is widely regarded as one of the finest meats in the world with a melt-in-the-mouth texture that other cuts simply cannot compete with. While their extraordinary beef cuts and that fantastic Wagyu are arguably Stockdales’ raison d’etre, the diligent kitchen team certainly aren’t slacking in the snacks, starters or dessert departments either. To whet one’s appetite in the bar before heading to the dining area you’d be hard pressed to do better than the Hendrick’s Gin Cured Salmon which provides a subtle and surprising twist on the familiar. The Black Pudding Loughnane Croquettes served with mustard mayo have a wonderfully rich flavour and a pleasing coarseness of texture. The outlandishly moreish Truffle Hollandaise served with sourdough soldiers is a creamy delight with the sharp pungency of the truffle infusion proving irresistible. Of the trio of starters we sampled only the King Prawn Cocktail fell slightly short of excellence while the Fillet Steak Tartare with ‘Umami’ Yolk had a lightness to it that revealed a surprising

complexity and depth of flavor. The Potted Chicken Live Parfait with Damson Jam perfectly balanced its rich gamey and fruity constituents. The rare Roast Wagyu Sirloin was a refreshingly generous portion of perfectly cooked beef (complemented, or should I say ‘condimented’ by some more of that outstanding truffle hollandaise) delicious to the last mouthful and accompanied by a triumvirate of superb sides: dripping chips, creamed spinach and a flavor packed heirloom tomato salad. With its elegantly stylish décor, superlative menu offerings, relaxed, friendly and efficient service and unexpectedly reasonable prices, Stockdales of Yorkshire has emerged as the breakaway frontrunner of local steakhouses and is well worth a visit. A Successful AGM Adel Crag Community Association recently held its 13th Annual General Meeting at the Wayland Croft Sheltered Housing Complex, attended by Councillor Barry Anderson and representatives from other organisations. It was also well supported by Adel residents. The main issues up for debate were about the potential purchase of land, speeding problems, nuisance bikes, brown bin collections, overgrown shrubberies, and a request for installation of electrical equipment for local residents of the sheltered complex.

John Garvani, Chair of Horsforth Town Council, Sarah Marston Morrisons Community Champion, Rev Matt

orsforth residents Wright, Cllr. Janice Pritlove, Linda Fergusson, & John recently had a Fairburn. party at St Margaret’s Parish Centre to celebrate Horsforth and the Fairtrade Foundation – not to becoming a Fairtrade town. mention a fabulous cake, expertly cut by Horsforth is Britain’s newest Fairtrade town, and is situated in Britain’s first and only Fairtrade ‘region’ – Yorkshire! Schools, churches, businesses and others were represented, not forgetting Horsforth Town Council, which has supported the campaign since it began in early 2014. The Fairtrade Horsforth group would like to thank everyone who helped Horsforth become a Fairtrade town, including Horsforth Churches Together who got the process underway. Fairtrade is not about charity, but about justice. It helps farmers in developing countries to get a fair wage and a Fairtrade premium, so that they can reinvest in their local community. Highlights of the day included a cocoa bean activity led by Leeds DEC, speeches from Fairtrade Yorkshire

John Garvani, chair of Horsforth Town Council. “It is always great to celebrate what a great community like ours can achieve when we come together for one cause”, said Rev Matt Wright, Lister Hill Baptist Church. “Now that we have the status, Fairtrade goods are being sold, and Fairtrade values are being taught in schools, we need to dream bigger and keep the campaign alive as we need to raise more awareness.” To find out more about Horsforth being a Fairtrade town and join ongoing adventures, please visit fairtradehorsforth.wordpress.com. Fairtrade Horsforth would especially like to hear from anyone who can help engage with local businesses, and they are very keen to see which Horsforth school will be the first to attain Fairtrade status!

The Association hopes that more residents in the Adel area will get involved The Committee would like to thank Pauline Mitchell at the Sheltered Housing Complex for the hire of their facilities and all those who attended. The Association hopes that more residents in the Adel area will get involved and attend future meetings, so that they can achieve the goals for their community.

Adel & Wharfedale Ward Update on Golden Acre Park I have recently been asked why some areas of Golden Acre Park have been left uncut in the former Heather Garden and what the current position is with the Conservatory. The Council officer responsible recently informed me that: “The uncut grassed areas have been left in a natural state intentionally to promote wild flowers, wildlife, and increase the overall variety that Golden Acres contributes to a greater bio-

HeadingleyWard As many people will know, Leeds is split into different areas to form community committees. The Inner North West community committee covers from the bottom of Hyde Park, right up to roughly the Holt Park area and everything in between! The community committee meetings are designed to give power to local communities, so people have as much access to decisions and decision makers as possible. We meet to discuss local issues and to allocate funding to local projects. Last month we met to discuss accessibility in our area. diversity. Both the Heather Garden and Cherry Orchard are ideal locations for this. Since 2007 the Heather Garden ideal has been abandoned and a selection process set in place with the aim to phase out the beds, starting with most the depleted beds. The change in attitude and management of the area has been heavily influenced by its main user group (dog walkers) and has provided a chance to rethink and re-design an area for everyone. The site now offers an open space where dogs can roam freely off the lead and an area to expand the lower arboretum. The area will not go unmanaged and will be cut once a year to prevent scrub and dominant species taking over. The meadow-like feel we hope to achieve will be given a boost this Autumn once the grass is cut with a sowing of wildflowers. With regard to the conservatory, work is on hold whilst awaiting the contractors to return to complete the interior. Once I am able to offer any firm information this will be placed out at the café.”

We discussed how street furniture creates problems for so many people, how street planning and the size of pavements affects those in wheelchairs or with buggies, the length of time pelican crossings give to go from one side of the street to the other. From the students union we heard about how access to housing might affect someone’s student experience - how so few houses are fitted with disabled access. As a result of this meeting and all the input from residents we are putting a list of actions forward for Leeds City Council to undertake. It’s

Residents urged to have their say on housing proposals As the final consultation on Leeds City Council’s Site Allocation Plan to build 66,000 homes by 2028 gets underway, I am urging residents to make their voices heard on the plans. I have l o n g power to local people in campaigned to protect the planning process and local green space and get the correct balance ensure proper, affordable between the rights of housing is built in the developers and the rights right areas, prioritising of communities. brown field land. In In March this year, April 2014 I introduced after working on a a Bill to the House of cross-party basis and Commons calling for with local and national ministers to give more planning organisations,

I published a manifesto of planning, endorsed by key national campaigners, setting out simple but important changes to make the planning system fairer. It is crucial that we protect our green space for leisure, sport, agriculture and to allow wildlife to flourish. It is not fair to local communities that developers can cherry-pick greenfield sites and build expensive multi-bedroom houses in areas that do not want and cannot support significant development. This is not what our city or country needs; the priority is for more affordable homes in key areas and more social housing on brownfield sites where possible. Many local residents are concerned about the current plans for housing, so it is important that people have their say during the consultation, which lasts until 16th November. Residents can submit comments online at www.leeds.gov.uk/ council/Pages/Site-allocations-planpublication.aspx, or write to the Council at: Planning Services, Leonardo Building, 2 Rossington Street, Leeds, LS2 8HD.

It is crucial that we protect our green space for leisure, sport, agriculture and to allow wildlife to flourish Make your voice heard today, and have your say on where housing could be built in your community.

Community News heatfields’ Winter Wonderland promises to be fun for everyone, with craft stalls with lots of gift ideas, delicious festive food and mulled wine. There will be festive games for all the family, including helping Santa find the lost presents hidden in the garden, and choirs singing traditional Christmas carols.

Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice in Headingley will be transformed into an enchanting Winter Wonderland on Saturday 21st November from 11am – 3pm.

“We have a great selection of Christmas cards, decorations and festive gifts”, said Katie Bell, Fundraising Assistant. “The hospice grounds will have a truly magical atmosphere with seasonal decorations and sparkling lights.” The event is a great opportunity to find interesting gifts, and to learn how to make your own Christmas crafts – from tree decorations to a welcoming wreath for your front door. Fundraising events like this are so important to Wheatfields, as they ensure that the hospice can continue to provide superb hospice care. All care is free of charge. However, it costs £4m to run the hospice and only part of this is covered by statutory funds. Every year the hospice needs to raise over £2.5 million to continue to provide its specialist care services. Councillors in Headingley are urging people to be vigilant about the theft of Yorkshire paving stones in the area. ouncillors Janette Walker, Neil Walshaw and Jonathan Pryor are concerned about the number of thefts and attempted thefts of this type, especially as it is very difficult to replace the stones once they have been removed. Alongside the work of the Police and Council the councillors believe that local residents also have a part to play in reporting these thefts. “We have been working to ensure everyone knows about the impact of Yorkshire paving stone thefts”, said Councillor Janette Walker. “Local vigilance has a huge part

to play. I urge local people to let the Police know about thefts either when they are in progress or as soon as they notice this has happened. This will help them build up a picture of who is doing it and when. The information we need is what is being stolen, when, and the registration number of any vehicles being used, if this can be seen safely.”

Once the stones are gone it is not usually possible to replace them The Councillors suggest that you call 101 with any information. In an emergency, or if a crime is being committed, they suggest calling 999.

he bullfinch is a jewel among British birds – the male in particular with its bright salmon-pink breast, jet-black head and bright white rump, stands out among the muted browns and yellows of our other garden species. Yet by nature it is rather a shy and sedentary creature, preferring to feed at familiar sites, and remaining faithful to one mate for life. Like all finches, it has a bill specially adapted for its favourite food source, in this case the buds of native fruit trees, berries and seeds. In the past bullfinches were considered a pest in orchards, with fruit growers being licensed to cull them. Mercifully this is no longer the case, but this species has nonetheless

declined by 50% in the last 25 years, mainly due to loss of hedgerows and the intensification of agriculture. The bullfinch’s mournful two-note call is often likened to a ‘squeaky gate’, but it’s rarely heard warbling song is more complex and quietly lovely. It is therefore initially surprising that in the 19th century they were much in demand as caged songbirds, due to their ability to mimic accurately the songs taught to them by their captors. Bullfinches can be seen in woodland and areas of dense bushes (where they nest), and have started to move into gardens in recent years, feeding particularly on sunflower seeds.

urley Model Allotments are currently looking for people to join them, as their waiting list is at the lowest it has been for many years. Now is the time to apply for an allotment and to get a plot of your own – your own small piece of paradise. Why have an allotment? There are many reasons why people like to grow their own fruit and veg – the taste, saving money, and the sheer fun factor. It does require some hard work, but a little planning and organisation will go a long way towards helping to establish your own plot.

How big are the plots? The size of the plots can vary from small beds for beginners to large plots suitable for feeding a family. Their aim is to make space for as many members of the Burley Model Allotments family as possible.

Associate members Burley Model Allotments have both full and associate memberships available. They use associate membership when there is a wait for plots, or for people who just want a taste of ‘allotmenteering’ – they can work with an existing plot holder to help tend their plot.

Home & Garden

As Winter approaches, colour in the garden is more valuable than ever. Here are some ideas for creative garden projects to ensure you have interesting planting to lift your spirits until the Spring. Winter Pots and Containers It is difficult to find flowers that will continue to stay bright and cheerful all through Winter. Even trusty Winter Pansies take a break from flowering during cold spells. But your pots and containers can still look marvellous if you add some exciting coloured foliage, berries or stems. Good candidates include Dogwood for stem colour in large containers, Bergenia for large, leathery leaves often tinged with red, Heuchera for yearround coloured foliage, and evergreen sedges such as the lovely coppery Carex testacea or stripy cream and green Carex ‘Evergold’. Skimmia is normally grown as a shrub in the borders, but little plants with berries appear in the garden centres at this time of year and make excellent subjects for containers. Don’t forget that the containers themselves can bring colour too, and look very stylish when they tone in with the colours of the planting.

any possible problems such as late flowering. In other words if you haven’t already put in some bulbs that will flower in Spring, then do it now! Large groups make the best displays, and if you choose carefully you can have beautiful bright flowers from January right through until May. The earliest include Snowdrops and lovely golden-yellow Winter Aconites, soon followed by Crocuses and small bright Anemone blanda in March and April

Bulbs for Spring Colour Did you know that the recommended planting time for Tulips is November, whereas other Spring bulbs like Daffodils and Crocus should go in earlier? I am like many people in that I prefer to plant all mine at the same time and I am prepared to risk

along with Hyacinths and Narcissi. Fashionable purple globes of Alliums appear in May. All of these can naturalise and emerge year after year. Tulips are less likely to return each year but they are my favourites, available in so many fabulous colours and shapes and it’s well worth planting some each Autumn. If you can’t wait until Spring, buy some specially treated bulbs for indoor forcing so that you can enjoy them in the depths of Winter. Plant some Narcissi ‘Paperwhite’ now and enjoy their elegant, scented flowers in ten weeks’ time. Tracy Foster www.tracyfostergardendesign.co.uk

We recently popped along to Duke Studios on Sheaf St for the launch of Come Play With Me - a brand new singles club releasing split 7” vinyl and aiming to showcase the most exciting artists from the Leeds area with a few surprises thrown in here and there. he launch event featured excellent, stripped down live sets from Deadwall, Post War Glamour Girls and local legends, The Wedding Present/Cinerama. Wedding Present frontman, David Gedge was on hand for an entertaining and enlightening interview with Guardian music journo and local lad, Dave Simpson. With a mix of the new and more established across all genres, the label will be demonstrating the awesome diversity of great music coming out of this part of the world. The singles themselves will also come in beautifully designed sleeves, packaged to look as well as sound great. Even better, Come Play With Me has been set up as a Community Interest Company, a social enterprise that reinvests all profits to identify ever more exciting talent from this part of Yorkshire and help them on the road to getting their music out to a wider audience. The first split single set for release on 6th November comes from Cinerama and Harkin. Harkin, well known as part of Sky Larkin, has also worked with Wild Beasts and Sleater-Kinney. She recently took time out to record a cover of one of her favourite songs: ‘National Anthem of Nowhere’, originally recorded by Canada’s Spanish-infused indie rock

darlings Apostle of Hustle. The track was produced by Jeff T. Smith of Juffage. Harkin’s portion of the proceeds from the single will be going to Sensory Leeds (www. sensoryleeds.com), an organisation set up to offer high quality sensory experiences for people with disabilities. With similar members across both bands, Cinerama has co-existed alongside The Wedding Present for nearly two decades and recently took the novel step of ’re-imagining’ the Wedding Present’s last studio album ‘Valentina’ in a cinematic, loungepop style to some great reviews.

“Having been born in Leeds the city is always going to have a special place in my heart, even without its rich musical heritage”, said David Gedge. “When Cinerama were invited to contribute to the singles club I was keen to be involved, especially since we’re going to be on the first release. It’s also very flattering that the club is named after one of The Wedding Present’s singles, even though I stole the title myself from a 70’s soft porn film! Maybe that’s the cyclical nature of pop culture!” www.pledgemusic.com/projects/ come-play-with-me

With this confident and accomplished release, People’s Poems demonstrate that they can easily hold their own amongst the most acclaimed of contemporary acoustic-folk artists.

he half dozen songs laid down here deliver a forceful impact, both sonically and emotionally, that belies their apparent stripped down minimalism and outwardly genteel seeming nature. They manage to explore a broad scope while remaining within the framework of a single guitar and two voices. Vocally, People’s Poems somewhat resemble a dream pairing of Antony Heagerty and Joanna Newsom, their distinctive, complementary tones at once both tremulous yet assured, mutually simpatico and expressive with an idiosyncratic approach to harmony. Listening to Duologues one quickly realises how apt the moniker People’s Poems is; here are intensely personal story-songs, characterised by a raw humanity and expressed through thoughtful and emotive lyricism. These literate and poignant tales of lost love and heartbreak are filtered through a prism of bittersweet remembrance and underpinned by intricately arranged guitar lines rich with rhythmic nuance. It’s powerful, soul-bearing stuff, a rewarding listen and possessed of an uncommon and individual beauty.

The great folk-rock band Steeleye Span will be at Leeds Town Hall on Friday 4th December. teeleye Span is not just a legendary name in British music but also a link to the classic days of rock and folk music. The band took folk from small clubs and festivals into the world of chart topping albums and international tours. The band provided a home for a long list of fine musicians. The current line-up consists of Maddy Prior, Rick Kemp, Liam Genockey, Julian Littman and Peter Zorn. With the departure of fiddle player and long-standing member Peter Knight, the band introduced Jessie May Smart, a young, vibrant talent who trained with Richard

Ireland at Trinity College of Music before going onto The University of Nottingham and whose CV includes working on The X Factor and with Katie Melua. Last year saw the release of a deluxe version of their album ‘Wintersmith’, in collaboration with Sir Terry Pratchett, which includes four new studio tracks. This has introduced the band to a new audience and broken new creative ground, capturing the band at its best. From beauty (‘The Making of A Man’), to menace (‘Dance the Dark Morris’) and all emotional points in-between, Wintersmith is a record that finds this veteran band exploring a vital new chapter both on record and live. REVIEW

THE WALK DIRECTED BY: ROBERT ZEMECKIS STARRING: JOSEPH GORDON LEVITT, CHARLOTTE LE BON, CLEMENT SIBONY, CESAR DOMBOY, JAMES BADGE DALE, BEN KINGSLEY

CERT: PG - RUNNING TIME: 123 MINS I was particularly sceptical when I heard of the imminent release of The Walk. I failed to see how a dramatised feature film retelling of the story of Phillipe Petit’s 1974 high wire walk between the towers of the World Trade Centre could possibly surpass James Marsh’s excellent, Oscar winning documentary, Man on Wire. News of the principals involved assuaged my doubts somewhat; Petit to be played by Joseph Gordon Levitt – a likeable screen presence with some decent credits under his belt, and Robert Zemeckis to direct; adept at driving storytelling momentum and a dab hand with CGI special effects, which would be imperative in delivering the vertiginous impact of The Walk (also, being the director of Back to the Future earns you an awful lot of good will in my book). While my assertion is that Man on Wire remains the definitive account of Petit’s extraordinary, almost superhuman achievement, The Walk does provide what that film could not; putting the audience up there on the wire with Petit and offering a bird’s eye view of the journey from tower to tower. As such, The

The Walk succeeds through sheer novelty and the powerful effect of the 3D Imax spectacle

Walk succeeds through sheer novelty and the powerful effect of the 3D Imax spectacle. Whereas Man on Wire framed Petit’s exploit as a heist movie, focussing chiefly on the execution of ‘le coup’ for its taut and thrilling narrative, The Walk broadens its scope to include a more biographical aspect, providing more background and context and depicting Petit’s development from clownish street performer to masterful high wire walker. This expanded perspective surrounding the main event is, to my mind, an assortment of mixed blessings some of which work well, others less so. The black and white flashback scenes set in Paris exhibit a striking visual flair which distinguishes the film’s best aspects, whereas Gordon Levitt as Petit telling his story direct to camera from atop Lady Liberty’s torch struck me as slightly lame and unnecessary. Likewise the inclusion of Ben Kingsley as ‘Papa Rudy’, Petit’s circus mentor – an exercise in pure caricature with an accent that’s all over the shop. Though Kingsley’s far from the only one guilty of dialectical inconsistency; there’s a pervasive ropeyness of accent that plagues the central cast and sometimes jars one out of being fully invested in a scene. Also, the love story aspect between Philippe and his girlfriend, Annie, seems shoehorned in and is handled half-heartedly.

These are, however, minor quibbles and mostly serve to enhance the fairy-tale sheen they give the story, which is clearly the intention of the filmmakers. It would be churlish to dwell on the film’s inconsistencies or points where it misses its mark as they are far outweighed by what it does right. The use of CGI and 3D is pretty much flawless throughout, 1970’s NYC is convincingly recreated and the digitally rendered twin towers look spectacular. If one still harboured any reservations regarding the broad, storybook nature of the film’s presentation they completely evaporate by the time we arrive on the roof. It is here, with the rigged wire strung between the buildings the culmination of Petit and his accomplices’ clandestine plot and with those first few steps ‘into the void’ that The Walk really takes off and goes beyond the trappings of conventional movie storytelling becoming something truly magical. It is during the titular walk that the film achieves the emotional freight that Man on Wire managed through the testimony of participants in ‘the artistic crime of the century’ and the inclusion of Petit himself. The technical wizardry adds another dimension to the recreation of the event, justifies the making of The Walk and reiterates Petit’s miraculous feat as a bona fide moment of wonder, a visceral and transcendent experience. To be given the opportunity to join Philippe Petit up there on his wire is more than enough reason to take in The Walk, though sufferers of vertigo should probably steer clear.

Campaign Raises Awareness of Bowel Cancer Screening he uptake for bowel cancer screening in the UK is at just 58%, so United European Gastroenterology is urging people to support the colorectal cancer campaign, #FaceUp2CRC, in a bid to raise awareness of the importance of screening. Bowel cancer, also known as colorectal cancer (CRC), is the most common type of gastrointestinal cancer across Europe, with estimates of more than 300,000 new cases recorded in the EU every year and incidence expected to rise 12% by 2020. Although most cases are diagnosed in the over 50s, recent findings have suggested that the risk of young people developing CRC is increasing at an alarming rate. With early detection, survival rates are around 90-95%.

Recent findings suggest that the risk of young people developing CRC is increasing

“With the risk of bowel cancer in the under 50s developing at an alarming rate, it is vital that the importance of screening is promoted”, said Greg Mulholland MP, who is supporting the campaign. “Early detection results in a much higher survival rate, so please join the #FaceUp2CRC campaign and encourage your friends, family and others to undertake colorectal cancer screening.” People are being asked to post a ‘selfie’ on social media with the hashtag #FaceUp2CRC and a short message on why they are supporting the campaign. Supporters can also join the Thunderclap, (www.thunderclap.it/projects/31694colorectal-cancer-faceup2crc?locale=en)

On 26th September, over 6,000 people descended on the Harewood Estate for the 2015 Brownlee Tri - Alistair and Jonny’s largest triathlon to date, with over 1,600 registered participants

‘Be a Hero’ Organ Donor Campaign Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is running its ‘Be a Hero’ campaign to raise awareness of the shortage of organ donors and MP Greg Mulholland is backing the campaign and urging people to join the organ donor register. Last year saw 114 people in Yorkshire donate organs after their death, which led to 294 patients receiving a transplant. However, 800 people in the region are still on the transplant waiting list. In Leeds, 29 people donated organs, which enabled 76 patients to receive a transplant.

Last year saw 114 people in Yorkshire donate organs after their death “It was a fantastic day for all involved”, said Alistair Brownlee. “It was great that so many participants returned from last year, but it was also important to us that the Brownlee Tri inspired new triathletes. Over 30% of our participants had never competed in a triathlon before and The Collective Kids Duathlon was always busy.” The free Kids Duathlon, delivered by British Triathlon Trust, was in high demand with over 300 children of all ages trying out running, cycling and transitions.

The Brownlee brothers started the first wave at 9:30am, with Jonny completing the swim leg for his team in the Corporate Challenge relay wave at 10:30am. Participants took part in Sprint, Super Sprint and Relay races throughout the day. Following the grand finish everyone enjoyed the Entertainment Village which offered a variety of activities and catering options.

For the full results, please visit www.brownleetri.com/results/

The ‘Be a Hero’ campaign is also backed by many high-profile figures, including Leeds United FC, actor Sir Patrick Stewart, and Joe Root from Yorkshire County Cricket Club. “’Be a Hero’ is an important and inspiring campaign”, said Greg. “I would really encourage local residents to sign up to the organ donor register. Taking just a couple of minutes to sign up could change the lives of so many people.” For further information and to sign up visit here: www. organdonation.nhs.uk/

cience pupils and staff from The Grammar School at Leeds and Batley Girls’ High School recently joined Fulneck Physicists for a day of specialist teaching and practical training on the science of earthquakes. Fulneck’s Physics Department, which runs a thriving Seismology club, was delighted to share its expertise. The department also works in partnership with schools in Naples, Nice and Torquay. Fulneck physicists are involved in outreach activities that benefit other schools. They developed the teaching materials and produced a lot of the equipment required to help teach aspects of Seismology. Students and teachers learned about different types of seismic waves, designing seismometers, locating earthquakes by triangulation

and searching for patterns in where earthquakes occur. They also looked into discovering the frequency of the different magnitudes of earthquake. Speakers included Paul Denton, Manager of UK Schools Seismology Project, representing The British Geological Survey, who spoke about possible careers in Seismology and outlined types of Seismology equipment and their development over the centuries; and Jurgen Neuberg, Professor of Physical Volcanology at Leeds University, who explained and gave examples of Volcano Seismology. “The workshop is a prime example of the cutting edge science in which our students are engaged”, said Mrs Newman, Principal at Fulneck School. “I am very proud of their

Thomas’ Balloon Lands in Belgium! In July, together with his friends at the Adel Nursery and Preschool Leavers’ Party, Thomas Diesendorff (4½) released his balloon, complete with message tag, into a beautiful, clear blue sky. Then everyone returned to the party fun and thought no more about it.

Ireland Wood Primary hosted a city-wide Scooter Challenge event to support the launch of a new ‘Scoot to School’ initiative run by Leeds City Council in September. he event was held during European Mobility Week, with pupils from six schools across the city participating in a series of scooter challenges. Children took part in a warm up, scooter racing, and attended a scooter skills course. In addition, a scooter stunt team put on two shows during the morning, which fascinated the children and the school is now looking at creating ‘stunt areas’ around its cycle track. “It was fantastic to share our facilities with other schools and all

the children had a great morning”, said Assistant Head, Jen Lansdowne. “We promote healthy and sustainable choices at Ireland Wood and encourage our pupils to walk/scoot/cycle to school every day. This event was a brilliant way in which to launch the ‘Scoot to School’ initiative and we now have even more children scooting to and from school and using our school cycle track at breaktimes.” The Lord Mayor of Leeds opened and closed the event, and Councillor Dowson was also in attendance.

On 28th August, a Mr Verplacke in Belgium e-mailed to say that he had found the card from Thomas’ balloon in the garden where his goose lives! It had travelled some 365 miles to Oudenburg, Belgium. “This was so unexpected”, said Ruth Diesendorff, Thomas’ mum. “We thought it would be nice to share some really happy news.” Mr Verplanke wrote first to Acorns in Adel, where director Helin Smith put him in touch with Thomas’ family. Thomas was subsequently presented with a certificate to mark the fact that his balloon had travelled the furthest and someone as far away as Belgium had found it.

He is hoping to place highly in order to be picked for the Great Britain Junior squad. His coach, Dave Murray, coaches the Junior Elite boys at the club, alongside Nile Wilson (prospective Olympic Gymnast)

Louis’ achievements in the past six years have been impressive He recently competed in the prestigious London Open Under 14’s category, where he came fourth overall, second on Rings, and second on Vault. Louis warmed up on parallel bars alongside Olympic medalist Max Whitlock! Louis’ achievements in the past six years have been impressive. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Joel is finding

that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
