of loved ones at their annual Lights of Love events. he events take place on Sunday 4th December, 4.30pm at Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice, Grove Road, and on Sunday 11th December, 3pm at St Chad’s Parish Church, Far Headingley. At each event people will come together to remember and make a special dedication to someone who has touched or inspired their life. “Memories are forever and they are a precious gift”, said Charlotte Stern, Senior Fundraiser at Wheatfields Hospice. “It is important to take time to remember the people who have played a vital role in our lives. I hope to see as many people as possible joining us to enjoy traditional carols and festive music. During the service we will also light our Christmas tree, with each light representing someone who has a special place in our heart.” Seasonal refreshments will be available after the service and there will be an opportunity to buy Christmas cards and festive gifts.

People keen to dedicate a ‘Light of Love’ will be encouraged to make a donation to Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice to support its services. All care services at Wheatfields are free of charge to patients and their families. However it costs around £12,000 a day to keep its doors open and only part of these costs are covered by statutory funds. The hospice needs to raise £2.5 million to continue to provide its specialist care services.

JOSEPH WATSON, FIRST LORD MANTON (1873-1922) ‘SOAPY JOE’

Joseph Watson’s huge soap works next to the river in Whitehall Road, always known as Soapy Joe’s, was a Leeds landmark. He built up his family business through enterprise and intensive national advertising, rivalling his giant competitor William Lever. In WW1 he took on a secret role that brought him acclaim but later left a shadow on his reputation. He used his great wealth to support large-scale agriculture and to indulge his passion for the turf. Rewarded with a baronetcy, he acquired a suitably magnificent stately home, then died before he could enjoy it. A real life soap opera? he business had been founded in Horsforth by his grandfather, the first Joseph Watson, dealing in animal skins and hides – the fats went into tallow candles and soap. The business prospered, carried on by his sons George and Charles in Woodhouse Lane. Around 1870 they moved to a new site in Whitehall Road, close to the river where supplies could come in by boat. Although still dealing in hides, they focussed increasingly on producing soap. The days when the mass of working people could be sneered at as ‘the great unwashed’ were ending: education, health and hygiene, cheap washable clothing, meant booming demand. Their major product was the all-purpose ‘Matchless Cleanser’, marketed across the country as the housewife’s friend. They expanded, pioneering scientific and technological advances, not least in the lucrative by-product glycerine, sold on for dynamite. Joseph Watson Junior, George Watson’s only son, was born in 1873 at Far Headingley, and educated expensively at Repton and Cambridge. He left without taking his degree, summoned to join the business around 1892 when it suffered disastrous losses in a fire in the Dark Arches. In 1897 the firm became a public company with Joseph Watson as chairman. Under his dynamic leadership production soared. He pioneered a massive advertising campaign featuring prize competitions – you sent in your soap wrappers hoping to win one of an enormous list of prizes: umbrellas, clocks, handbags, cash, later even a car or a house! New products were introduced: Nubolic, Sparkla, Venus, though the Matchless Cleanser remained the brand leader, promoted for snow-white laundry, a spotless house, even ‘curing children’s heads of ringworms’. In 1906 there was a proposed merger with Lever, which failed after a vigorous anti-monopoly newspaper campaign,

although Watson had sold some of his shares to Lever. By this time he had married - Frances Nickols, daughter of the owner of the Joppa Tannery at Kirkstall – and had moved to Linton near Wetherby, with their four young sons and a substantial household of six servants. He had other interests in an oil and animal feed plant in Selby, but remained the force behind the continuing profitability and success of the soap works. When war broke out in 1914 and Britain was in desperate need of munitions, he was approached to lead a local committee secretly charged with establishing a shell-filling factory in Leeds – his organisational skills and links with the armaments trade made him the ideal candidate. A huge 400 acre site was found at Manston and a complex infrastructure put in place to create the Barnbow Filling Factory no.1, the largest in the country. Sixteen thousand people, almost all women, worked there; millions of shells were filled and cartridges charged, a vital

contribution to the war effort: as Lloyd George wrote ‘saving the lives of the brave men at the front’. But the women worked in terrible, dangerous conditions and there were serious accidents, with no compensation for the bereaved families, raising questions over Joseph Watson’s role. In 1917 he sold the rest of his shares in the soap-works to Lever though he stayed on as chairman. Conscious of wartime food shortages, he bought thousands of acres of farmland and supported ongoing research into industrial farming methods. He acquired the famous Manton stud and spent thousands on racehorses, winning several important races. Leeds was not forgotten: he donated £50,000 to the Infirmary, with other gifts. In the 1922 New Year’s Honours he was created a baron for his service in wartime and to agriculture and took the title Lord Manton of Compton Verney, a neo-classical mansion in Warwickshire which he had just acquired. Only three months later he was thrown from his horse when hunting and died, aged 49. He was buried at nearby Offchurch, dressed in his hunting scarlet. The firm continued as part of the Unilever empire, under various names (Elida Gibbs etc), and is now based in Seacroft. Soapy Joe’s became a riverside wasteland – just a Leeds legend now.

Leeds Community Homes recently launched a community share offer – with the aim of raising £360,000 to support the purchase of sixteen permanently affordable city centre flats. he £360,000 will contribute towards the purchase of nine flats, which will be kept for social rental, and Leeds Community Homes will sell on seven others at around two thirds of full market value. There will also be restrictions on future sales – which mean that the homes will continue to be available at an affordable price in the future. Affordable homes are desperately needed in Leeds, as in other parts of the country. To be able to afford to buy a home at market prices you would currently need to be earning in the range of £40,000; and to rent privately you would need a salary of £28,000. Even ‘affordable’ rents would require £21,500. Obviously there are thousands and thousands of people in Leeds who are not in these brackets.

This scheme is the first step towards Leeds Community Homes’ long-term goal – to be involved in the creation of 1,000 affordable homes in Leeds over the next ten years.

Affordable homes are desperately needed in Leeds “We plan to do that in a range of ways”, said Rob Greenland, a founder member of Leeds Community Homes. “We’re set up as a Community Land Trust (CLT) – a type of not-for-profit structure which means we can buy land and homes for permanently affordable housing. As a CLT, we will seek to buy small plots of land to build homes – probably mostly for rental. We imagine that we’ll focus primarily on smaller, innercity brownfield sites, where we might be able to build around half a dozen homes – the kind of sites that bigger house builders might not be interested in. “We also want to work with other people to create housing in a range of ‘community-led’ ways. We already have a good track record of this in Leeds. In Bramley, there’s the pioneering co-housing development LILAC, where people decided to get together and come up with a plan to meet their housing needs. They’ve created a beautiful co-housing development of around 20 homes, which has won all sorts of awards. “We’re already in touch with three groups who would like to do something similar and we’d like to help them to develop their ideas and make them happen. Creating housing isn’t easy. We think the expertise we have at Leeds Community Homes could be a great help. As we get better known, we’re confident that more people will approach us with ideas for building homes, so that more of the homes that we need in our city can be created by local people.” Leeds Community Homes share offer is open until 19th December. Minimum investment is £100, and the independent trust Power to Change will match all individual investments (up to a total of £100,000). For details about applying for shares, visit www. ethex.org.uk/leedscommunityhomes and www. leedscommunityhomes.org.uk

We had an opportunity at the beginning of November to spend a weekend at Forest Holidays’ Keldy cabins at Cropton, near Pickering. Four of us set off in high spirits and sunshine up the A64 on Friday afternoon, with thoughts of long walks through the woods and relaxing in a hot tub. We aimed to arrive before dark but Google Maps took us on a detour, it wasn’t just dark when we arrived, it was chucking it down! e were so glad to find our cosy little cabin, nestled among the trees. It was warm and welcoming. The hot tub was bubbling away on the deck and soon a ‘Cook’ frozen meal was warming up in the oven. We had stopped at ‘Cook’ at Moortown Corner to grab some provisions for the weekend, but found that the on-site shop, The Forest Hub’, also stocked a good selection. We slept to the sound of torrential rain! Next morning, the clouds cleared, the sun came out and we set out to meet up with Howard, the forest ranger, for a ‘survival’ trek in the woods. Just as we were about to set out the sky clouded over and it started to drizzle. But that didn’t deter us – this was about survival after all. As we foraged for edibles the rain became a downpour, but we continued picking berries and strange bits of vegetation. Gathering under a tree we examined our finds and were about to venture further into the woods when the rain turned to sleet, stinging our faces. And did I mention it was really cold? You’ve guessed it, we abandoned our survival trek and repaired to ‘The Retreat’, Keldy’s cosy café/bar, sat by a roaring log fire, drank warming cups of hot chocolate and pints of Guinness, while Howard gave us an indoor survival course! We were happy to get back to our cabin and chill out in a hot tub where the freezing rain didn’t seem half as bad. Sunday weather provided more of the same and we had planned zip wiring! It was bitterly cold. We were strapped into harnesses and scarpered up a tree to a high platform before whizzing across a

meadow to land on a somewhat muddy strip – the trick was to stay upright! At this point people’s hands were so cold they couldn’t undo the harnesses and a pub lunch in Pickering was calling loudly! You might think that this would put us off, but not at all. Despite the weather and not being able to take walks in the woods, it was a lovely weekend away from everything. We played scrabble and card games and watched silly films. We would definitely go back. The cabins are warm, comfortable and well equipped. We had a couple of problems (like a fuse blowing) and maintenance was right there to fix it. And, dogs are welcome. There are activities for both adults and children – bike hire, forest ranger activities, archery, zip wire and more. The Retreat is open from 9am – 8pm every day and you can have food delivered to your cabin, if you wish. You can also sign up for spa treatments and have champagne and chocolates delivered to your cabin for special occasions. Forest Holidays have nine locations in England and Scotland – all in beautiful wooded areas. For further information, visit www.forestholidays.co.uk

The fabulous ‘Strictly Ballroom The Musical’ will be at the West Yorkshire Playhouse from Wednesday 30th November – Saturday 21st January. his is hugely exciting as this is the first time that Baz Luhrmann’s musical (which followed on from his play and worldwide best selling film), has been performed outside Australia. A co-production by Global Creatures – the team behind Walking With Dinosaurs, How To Train Your Dragon, and King Kong – and West Yorkshire Playhouse, Strictly Ballroom promises to captivate all ages.

I would like people to feel inspired

The show is all about finding the right partner in life. It is the inspiring story of star-crossed lovers from different ethnicities, one a championship ballroom dancer who defies all the rules to follow his heart. It features numbers such as ‘Love is in the Air’, ‘Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps’ and ‘Time After Time’, as well as several new songs by internationally acclaimed artists including Sia, David Foster and Eddie Perfect. Like millions of dancers across the world, director and choreographer Drew McOnie was inspired by the movie as a young dancer – and recently his dazzling choreography for ‘In The Heights’ earned him the 2016 Olivier Award. “I am incredibly excited about the dynamic and diverse company we have put together to create Strictly Ballroom”, said Drew. “It literally comes from all over the world. There was no compromising on casting, and it was very difficult as there had to be a level of authenticity.” Thanks to shows like ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ there is a huge appetite for top end dancing. The public is well trained in what to look out for and pays attention to detail and technique. “The show is a celebration of life and dance is used as a metaphor, creating a world with the weightlessness, freedom and fluidity that dance offers”, continued Drew. “There are a number of new musical numbers and key scenes have been musicalised with catchy new tunes.

“This new production brings people’s stories to the fore that you wouldn’t expect – like the parents. It will touch people of all ages – from children to grandparents – and it’s very funny. I want people to walk away knowing that they have seen a brilliant story, not solely a dance show. I would like people to feel inspired and leave with a revised sense of ambition.” The role of Fran will be played by Gemma Sutton, who starred in ‘Gypsy’ and ‘The Go-Between’ in the West End. Sam Lips, as Scott, who recently starred on Broadway, is making his UK debut. Two familiar faces from The Playhouse’s 2015 hit musical ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ are Tamsin Carroll and Stephen Matthews who will play Shirley and Doug. “We’re thrilled to have such talented and experienced performers at the Playhouse”, said James Brining, Artistic Director, West Yorkshire Playhouse. “We pride ourselves on producing exceptional musical theatre and we are building a

reputation for showcasing world-class musicals here in Leeds. Strictly Ballroom follows on from the huge success of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, which is still touring nationally.”

Magic & Mayhem in Opera North’s Fairy Tale Season

This Winter, Opera North is celebrating

Giunta

Dladla

of classic fairy tales with three brand new productions – RimskyKorsakov’s rarelyperformed ‘The Snow Maiden’, Humperdinck’s much-loved ‘Hansel and Gretel’ and Rossini’s captivating ‘Cinderella’.

Director John Fulljames has reworked the classic storyline into a contemporary setting, with enchanting video dreamscapes blending the boundaries between reality and fantasy. The opera, which is being professionally staged in the UK for the first time in over 60 years, features some of Rimsky-Korsakov’s most lyrical music, including the ‘Chorus of the Birds’, and the ‘Dance of the Clowns’.

Wallis

Sunnyboy

the timeless appeal

he icy chill of January is the perfect time to visit a cosy theatre for a charming Russian folk story. In ‘The Snow Maiden’, the daughter of Grandfather Frost and Spring Beauty, sung by Irish mezzo-soprano Aoife Miskelly, wants nothing more than to live amongst humans, after meeting a shepherd boy, Lel (Heather Lowe). But she hides a tragic secret: her heart is made of ice and, if she falls in love, it will melt.

Pictured:

Pictured:

‘Hansel and Gretel’ is perhaps the best-loved of all the operatic fairy tales but, in director Edward Dick’s new production, it is also a darkly compelling story of growing up and survival. It features one of Britain’s leading dramatic sopranos, Susan Bullock CBE, in the dual role of the Witch and the children’s mother, alongside Katie Bray and Fflur Wyn, as Hansel and Gretel. The action on stage includes hand-held cameras and live video. Set against this modern technology is Humperdinck’s charming and melodic music, including the dizzying excitement of the ‘Witch’s Ride’ and the serene beauty of the children’s ‘Evening Prayer’. The music magically evokes the contrasting worlds of the story, from the daily struggle for survival of an impoverished family, to the world of the forest, both idyllic and full of danger; home to the terrifying Witch and her tempting gingerbread house. The third opera is Rossini’s sparkling comedy ‘Cinderella’ (La Cenerentola). Dance is woven into the very fabric of the music and this contemporary new production opens with Cinderella scrubbing the floor of a dance school. In Rossini’s work, it is music rather than magic that transforms Cinderella into a princess and enables her to deftly outwit her wicked stepfather and cruel stepsisters. This fresh, witty take on the Cinderella story is directed by director and choreographer Aletta Collins, with two young international stars taking the lead roles. Canadian mezzosoprano Wallis Giunta as Cinderella, and South African tenor Sunnyboy Dladla as her prince. Opera North’s fairy tale season is at Leeds Grand Theatre from 21st January – 25th February.

orthern Ballet’s ‘Beauty and the Beast’ returns to Leeds Grand Theatre for the first time since its World Première in 2011. Running from 15th December – 7th January, it is a kaleidoscope of colour and haute couture style, a treasured classic for the whole family to enjoy. “Beauty and the Beast is a classic fairy tale of good versus evil, exploring the concept of beauty both on the inside and the outside”, said Artistic Director David Nixon, who choreographed the show. “This is not an adaptation of the Disney version of the story – it is based on the original tale and will embrace the darker elements as well as the lighter moments.”

Beauty and the Beast tells the story of a vain and superficial Prince. Transformed into a beast as punishment for his arrogance, his only chance is for true love to break the spell – but who could love such a monster? Beauty and the Beast takes you on a journey into an enchanting world inhabited by fairies, goblins and sprites. Set to an infectious score, played live by Northern Ballet Sinfonia, and including music by Saint-Saëns, Bizet, Poulenc, Glazunov and Debussy, this magical show proves that love conquers all. The stunning set design is by Duncan

Hayler, who also designed David Nixon’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’, lighting design is by Tim Mitchell, who also worked on Northern Ballet’s ‘Hamlet’ and ‘Dracula’, and the beautiful costumes are by David Nixon, assisted by Julie Anderson. “...Am I to spend all the best part of my life in this wretched bondage, forcibly suppressing my rage at the idleness, the apathy and the hyperbolical and most asinine stupidity of those fat-headed oafs, and on compulsion assuming an air of kindness, patience and assiduity?” These were the thoughts of the young Charlotte Brontë, when she was a teacher at Roe Head School in Mirfield. The short-sighted author had a habit of making entries in her journal during her classes: there are reports of her writing in tiny script, her nose nearly touching the paper, then sitting with her eyes closed. The girls in front of her might have thought she was receiving spirit messages. She did not make much of a success of being a governess either. She was unable to control the two

young children of Skipton mill owner John Benson Sidgwick, but she did admire his Newfoundland dog! Richard Wilcocks, Secretary of Headingley LitFest, will speak about her writing and life in a talk entitled ‘Charlotte Brontë: Terrible Teacher, Brilliant Novelist’ at Headingley Library on Thursday 8th December at 7pm. He will also go into role as John Benson Sidgwick, who will give his own view of the unhappy woman he employed, and of governesses in general. The talk is a LitFest ‘Between the Lines’ event and is free. The main part of the annual Headingley LitFest (the tenth) takes place in March next year.

Northern Opera Group will present its magical production of ‘Cinderella’ from 1st – 3rd December, 8pm at Duke Studios, 3 Sheaf St, LS10 1HD inderella (by Pauline Viardot) is a witty adaptation of the classic fairy tale, and is the perfect start to Christmas for all ages. The opera has all the magic and enchantment one expects from the story, and Viardot’s music is a wonderfully tuneful accompaniment. The production also features a community chorus, with principals drawn from a range of local music students, talented amateurs and former professional singers. Northern Opera Group will also be producing a range of education resources to enable audiences to further explore the life and work of Pauline Viardot, and explore the creations of other female opera composers.

“After the huge success of our first Christmas opera, ‘Amahl and the Night Visitors’ last year, we are delighted to be presenting another rare and wonderful family opera this December”, said David Ward, Director. “We’re really looking forward to providing our

audiences with a truly magical start to their Christmas!” The opera will be performed in English and will last 50 minutes. Tickets (£7/ £5) are available from www. northernoperagroup. co.uk

In the sixties French new wave filmmaker Jean Luc Godard famously claimed that ‘All you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun’.

Afraid of the Dark? Michael Morpurgo in Conversation On Thursday 1st December there will be a live screening from the British Library at Leeds Central Library (Room 700), from 6.15 – 8pm, featuring children’s author Michael Morpurgo.

rtist and theatre-maker Louise Orwin, a big fan of his films, wondered how the media’s portrayal of women had moved on in the 50 odd years since he made his claim – and she wasn’t sure that the movement had been positive! Louise started seeing girls and guns everywhere. She obsessed over them on YouTube, marvelled at them in music videos, felt a bit disgusted about them in video games, and tried not to see them in pornography. She decided to make a show to challenge films (and the audiences that watch them) that use girls and guns as easy plot devices, whilst also admitting her own confusion at being simultaneously repulsed and attracted to that kind of imagery. A Girl and a Gun is a live, multimedia performance brimming with wit and fun, whilst being sharply satirical. Louise performs the show

with a different local male guest co-star performer at every show. The guest male performer will have never seen the script before so his reactions - and those of the audience - are genuinely spontaneous. Reading his lines and stage directions from an autocue, he is directed to do increasingly violent things as the performance progresses. A Girl and a Gun mischievously challenges not only ideas of masculinity and femininity, but also pop culture and broader society’s appetite for violence. A Girl and a Gun is at Leeds Live Art Bistro, Regent Street on Thursday 15th December. Tickets (£9.50/£6 adv. £10 door) are available from www. liveartleeds.com. You can see the trailer at https://vimeo.com/179443401

http://louiseorwin.com

Writer and broadcaster Nicolette Jones will talk to the bestselling author, who has written over 130 books including War Horse, Private Peaceful and Kensuke’s Kingdom, about children’s literature. They will reflect on whether children should be exposed to suffering (Morpurgo has written about the Holocaust and Nagasaki); why it is important to pass history on to children; the magic of stage adaptations; and how children can be encouraged to read and write. orsforth Music Centre has joined forces with Instituto Cervantes to present a new package of Flamenco and Spanish language classes on Saturday mornings. Professional dancer Luisa Galan, who has trained at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance and the Conservatoire of Dance in Cordoba, Spain, has joined the team of music and dance teachers at the centre to deliver quality instruction in this amazing Spanish art form. There are sessions for children, adults, beginners and improvers, and the

dancing is accompanied by live flamenco guitar. “We are very excited to have this partnership”, said Alex Wibrew, Head of Centre. “Working with Instituto Cervantes means we can offer an authentic Spanish experience to our members and feedback from students in the first week was amazing. We can’t wait to add Spanish language classes to the offer as well.” The Horsforth Music Centre (operated by ArtForms, Leeds City Council music and arts service) is based at Horsforth School on Saturday mornings. It offers music and dance tuition across a broad range of instruments and styles, and is open to both children and adults at all levels. The centre offers a crèche service, instrument hire and also has a café bar. Lessons start from £5 and bursaries are available. The centre enrols throughout the year and it’s easy to book onto classes and try them out on a Saturday morning. “This is a fantastic example of the wide range of classes available at our music centres”, said Cllr Lisa Mulherin, executive member for children and families. “Attending a music centre is not only about learning how to play an instrument or how to sing; it can help children grow in confidence as well as helping people of all ages make new friends and meet people from different backgrounds and from across the city.” For further information contact horsforth. music.centre@leeds.gov.uk or telephone 07545 603 953

Blackhouse New Menu Returns to its Roots Blackhouse Leeds, better known as Grill on the Square, recently had a revamp and introduced a new menu, just in time for Christmas! We popped along early on a Tuesday evening to find the place already buzzing.

The new ‘Book of Beef’ on the menu is a guide on everything he new menu returns to its roots – steak and seafood – and who can argue with that? After starters of Dressed Crab and Avocado (almost too pretty to eat) and an impressively piled pot of Piri Piri Calamari (complete with delicious little tentacles!) with saffron mayonnaise, we went ‘roots’. The new ‘Book of Beef’ on the menu is a guide on everything you need to know about beef, and the choice is outstanding – from Scottish Sirloin and Argentinian Ribeye to Wagyu Fillet and ‘The Butchers Block’ – Himalayan rock salt aged beef, cut and weighed at your table. We chose the Scottish Sirloin, which, accompanied by a red

you need to know about beef

wine and shallot sauce, chips and side salad, was melt-in-themouth delicious. Our other choice was the Seared Sashimi Tuna with roasted red pepper and Madras and turmeric spiced cauliflower, nigella seeds, mint yogurt and sweet potato crisps’. I have to say it was the best tuna I’d tasted in quite a while, beautifully pink on the inside. The seafood choices also included Whole Baked Seabass Fillets, Roast Cod Loin, Poached Salmon, whole roasted Dover Sole, Grilled Lobster and Classic Fish & Chips. We rounded the meal off with Warm Apple Pie (which almost rivaled a certain grandmother’s!) and a Woodland Berry Mess. There was a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and the background music (bluesy, jazzy, classic rock) was perfect. There seemed to be a small army of servers keeping everyone happy, and our dedicated waitress, Pippa, was great – even putting up with a few stupid questions! The interior of the restaurant was recently spruced up, but still retains many of the core features. The latest addition is a new, all-weather conservatory overlooking the bond court and providing an extra 20 covers, likely to become a favoured spot. Prices range from £6 - £8.75 for starters and £12.50 - £55 for mains. Blackhouse: The Grill on the Square, 31-33 East Parade, LS1 5PS Tel: 0113 246 0669, www.blackhouse.uk.com/leeds

Mario Olianas’s Yorkshire Pecorino recently won the Best Semi-Soft Cheese award at the Great British Cheese Awards, launched earlier this year to recognise, promote and reward excellence in the artisan cheese industry.

It all started when I went to visit my brother in Sardinia, and found he was making cheese, and it actually tasted good!

ver 7,500 people voted for their favourite cheeses, producers and retailers and a prestigious panel, including Brian Turner, Chef Restaurateur and President of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts, tasted and judged the overall category winners. Yorkshire Pecorino is made in Adel. Mario created a 30 day aged pecorino using his family’s traditional Sardinian recipe. “I’ve been making cheese for four years now, and I’m chuffed to bits for Yorkshire Pecorino to be crowned the best semi-soft cheese in Britain”, said Mario. “It all started when I went to visit my brother in Sardinia, and found he was making cheese, and it actually tasted good! When I came back I told my wife we needed to

Pictured: Ollie Lloyd, Mario Olianas, Ian Tencor of Peter’s Yard & Brian Turner Chef Restaurateur and President of the Royal Academy of Culinary Arts

make some that was better! It took us six months to find the right milk, but since then we’ve been winning awards. My brother quickly surrendered and after today, I don’t think he can say anything more about cheese!” Mario was also runner-up as Best New Producer. This year has been a great year for Mario and his Pecorino – having won at the Great Yorkshire Show, The Artisan Cheese Awards and the International Cheese Awards. Winning at the Great British Cheese Awards is the icing on the cake. Mario sells his cheese through the cheesemongers George and Joseph in Chapel Allerton, Fodder in Harrogate, and local farmers’ markets.

The Great British Cheese Awards were organised by Great British Chefs (the UK’s fastest growing food website) and Peter’s Yard. “We launched The Great British Cheese Awards with the aim of producing a catalogue of great artisan cheese and discovering up-and-coming cheesemakers”, said Ollie Lloyd, CEO and founder of Great British Chefs. “To achieve 7,500 votes in our first year is phenomenal.”

Ison Harrison Celebrates Success in Chapel Allerton Circles of The Chapel Allerton branch of the law firm Ison Harrison is celebrating two years of successful operation, and recently completed its nine hundredth conveyancing instruction.

Support with MAECare` MAECare (Moor Allerton Elderly Care) recently launched Circles of Support (CoS), a new project to support people living with dementia.

ocated on Harrogate Road, the branch is one of the firm’s busiest branches outside of the city centre, specialising in residential conveyancing, family law and wills and probate. It has also recently welcomed Amber Walker, a conveyancing assistant to the team. She has moved across from the firm’s head office in Leeds. “There is a booming business and social scene here, as well as independent businesses and a thriving entrepreneurial feel”, said Rebecca Austin, Branch Manager. “The team has unrivalled local knowledge as well as expert legal experience and is perfectly placed to provide a comprehensive service. “Our office is in the heart of the community and has become increasingly important in the busy network of prospering

businesses. This has helped us to grow and expand as a business as the demand for a wider range of legal expertise is called for.” “Like all our branches around West Yorkshire, our Chapel Allerton staff has a wide and varied knowledge but specialise sin the key legal areas of conveyancing, wills and family law”, said Jonathan Wearing, Managing Partner. “We can also call upon city centre staff who have expertise in all areas of law, be it personal injury, criminal law, employment advice or professional negligence. “We’ve had a very successful two years in Chapel Allerton and have seen the team and the reputation of the firm grow very quickly and we look forward to continued success.” For more information, visit www. isonharrison.co.uk

A CoS is a group, coordinated by a MAECare worker, who provide support to enable people with dementia to think about what they would like to do in their lives and how to bring about any changes. The group can include family members, friends and volunteers – whoever that person identifies as key people in their life. Sometimes when people have memory loss they stop going out and friends and family may not know the best way to support them. CoS is a way of supporting everyone. The person with dementia is at the heart of the group and the MAECare worker ensures that everyone in the group knows what each one is doing. The group meets regularly either in person or via IT to ensure that the person’s wishes are being carried out. CoS was piloted in the South of England over a three year period and was found to have a significant effect on improving the quality of life of people living with dementia. Now MAECare wants to find out if it can make a difference here. The project is funded for two years by the North Clinical Commissioning Group. For further information, please contact CoS Project Worker Jenny Nayak on 0113 266 0371 (Mon, Tues, Thurs).

enny had a special reason for choosing to support the BHF. Michael, her husband, suffered a heart attack in 1980 when he was just 44 and his father died from heart disease at age 47. “Our health is precious and Michael is still with us thanks to the amazing work of the BHF”, said Jenny. ’In August 2015 he turned 80 and we wanted to mark the occasion with donations to the BHF, it was the perfect charity choice for my year as Inner Wheel president. “BHF research has helped Michael to live longer and we are eternally grateful for that. Research has meant that future generations in our family are aware of the risks. I am so proud of the work and support I received from the Inner Wheel, the highlight at the end of the year was the Queen’s Birthday celebration which raised £990, ending our year of fundraising on a high.” BHF fundraising groups are the face of the BHF in the community. From running fundraising events to supporting schools and local businesses and organising collections, they are a great way to support the charity’s vital work. BHF research has helped halve death rates from heart and circulatory disease over the past 50 years, but there is still a long way to go. Through the public’s generosity BHF will fund half a billion pounds of new research over the next five years. News From Your Councillors Cllr

DAN COHEN Alwoodley

Regular readers of this column (which I hope includes every Alwoodleyian as both North Leeds Life and my column are essential reading!), will recall I wrote recently about the proposals to reduce the speed limit from 30mph to 20mph on residential roads to the west of the A61 (Harrogate Road).

At the time, all the feedback I received was very positive. In fact, the only negative feedback was from a number of Alwoodley residents living to the east of the A61 who wanted to know when the speed limit on their roads would be reduced – the answer to which is that we still don’t know. In the coming months the council will conduct its formal consultation on this issue and I strongly urge you to take part and make your views known, whether you are in favour or against the proposal. There will be notices on lampposts when the consultation begins and I will also highlight it in my column, but it is advisable to keep your eyes peeled, so you don’t miss the opportunity to comment. Another theme of my columns this year has been the ongoing saga of the resurfacing of the road known locally as The Avenue Crater Park. This is a scheme that got delayed due to whole host of reasons that I won’t revisit as it won’t change anything and it’s not good for the blood pressure.

As those who live on, or near, or use The Avenue, will be aware, since the middle of November, there have been closures on the road between 7.30am and 4pm, to allow the resurfacing to finally take place. Hopefully by the time this magazine finds its way to you, the work will be almost complete and we’ll be able to drive along the road without rattling every bone in your body. Now that really would be a Christmas / Chanukah miracle. Which leads me to wishing all Alwoodley residents and North Leeds Life readers a very merry festive season. May we all get the chance to open our presents with those we love most and may we find the time to visit those who may not be quite so lucky. As always, for any assistance or advice on any local issues, please contact myself or my colleagues, Neil Buckley and Peter Harrand.

Cllr

REBECCA CHARLWOOD Moortown & Meanwood Ward

I have previously written about the importance of continuing to support the most vulnerable people in our communities and the key role the Council and local organisations can play in helping to improve people’s health across the city. With cold weather, some groups are particularly at risk. High winds, ice, snow and general cold and damp conditions can impact on people’s health, especially those over 65 and people with long term illnesses. Despite last year being the warmest and wettest winter on record, there were still over 43,000 excess winter deaths recorded in the UK from December to March – the largest number since 1999. In Leeds, we estimate that there will be about 380 excess winter deaths each year, mostly linked to cardiovascular or respiratory conditions. This

is why programmes like Winter Friends are so crucial as they allow local organisations to support the most vulnerable residents during the winter period. Supported by the Council, the Winter Friends Programme provides training for local organisations to develop various skills and information, including the signs and symptoms of cold weather and the services available in Leeds. We now have over 60 organisations across Leeds who have completed the awareness session, including MAECare and Connect Well in the Moortown area. These organisations can also complete a Winter Wellbeing Checklist with you or an older person in the area, identifying what services can help keep your house warm and damp free. If you know someone who may need a bit of extra help over the winter such as an older neighbour, family member or friend then contact the Helpline Leeds Directory 0113 3918333 or visit www.Leedsdirectory. gov to find your local Winter Friend.

This is the time of year for giving, so here are few ideas for gifts for the gardener in your life. Look Sharp Blunt tools make hard work out of gardening. Secateurs, trowels and even spades need regular sharpening – look out for sharpening tools and files for garden tools, it’s easy to do and most of these gadgets come with instructions. If they don’t then there are plenty of on-line tutorials to help you learn how.

Clever Clogs

make hard

A pair of gardening clogs by the back door is a necessity for anyone who likes to pop in and out of the garden at every opportunity. There are plenty of styles to choose from for both women and men, and if you like something bright and cheerful then Backdoorshoes offer styles bearing pictures of anything from chickens to tulips.

Tracy Foster - www. tracyfostergarden design.co.uk

Scrub Up How about a nice nail brush and a manicure set? It’s on my wish list!

Flowers to Wow Us Amaryllis bulbs make brilliant Christmas or winter gifts as they can be planted from October to January and will produce huge exotic blooms just when you need them most. They are also relatively easy to look after and will carry on flowering year after year. My favourite is the unusual, spidery petalled ‘Chico’.

Compost Companion If you stir your compost heap with an aerator every time you walk past, the whole composting process speeds up and you will be able to use it to feed and improve your garden much more quickly. The ones that look like a giant corkscrew work well – I like Burgon and Ball’s Flexi Compost Aerator. Every gardener should have one!

FILM

REVIEW

NOCTURNAL ANIMALS DIRECTED BY: TOM FORD STARRING: AMY ADAMS, JAKE GYLLENHAAL, MICHAEL SHANNON, AARON TAYLOR-JOHNSON

CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 117 MINS hen one has distinguished themselves in a particular creative discipline, as Tom Ford has long since done in the world of fashion, their straying into another arena of artistic endeavor is often greeted with skepticism; the skills with which they’ve made their mark regarded as non-transferable. So, I imagine that when Ford, whose couture designs for the likes of Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent had won him much acclaim, announced that he was to try his hand at filmmaking there were, no doubt, groans among territorial cinephiles and assertions that he should, perhaps, stay in his lane. However, the result, ‘A Single Man’, proved a striking debut and was rapturously received. Ford’s first outing as director showed he possessed not only the keen eye one would expect given his previous career experience but also a knack for sensitive narrative presentation and an ability to coax note perfect performances from his cast. A Single Man was not only beautiful to look at but also an affecting meditation on love, loss and grief. Ford’s second feature, ‘Nocturnal Animals’, conclusively proves its predecessor was no fluke, confirming his standing as a director of vision and panache. It is also several shades darker

Nocturnal Animals’ confirms Tom Ford as a director of vision and panache

in tone and carries itself with an air of seething menace. Susan (Amy Adams) is a gallery owner whose lifestyle appears to display all the trappings of success – art-scene prestige, wealth, high fashion wardrobe, architecturally stylish and modern abode (replete with Jeff Koons sculpture poolside) and a handsome, if emotionally unavailable, spouse. When she receives a manuscript written by her first husband, Edward (Jake Gyllenhaal) whom she left twenty years previously, it prizes open a crack in the façade revealing the fragility of her world and the life she has made for herself. As Susan begins to read Edward’s brutal and disturbing novel, the story is presented to us as a page-to-screen film within a film wherein Tony (also played by Gyllenhaal), his wife, and their teenage daughter are venturing out on vacation. Driving through west Texas they’re run off the road and terrorized by a trio of unsavory locals. Severe and gruesome unpleasantness ensues and Tony’s tortuous ordeal becomes a haunted pursuit of justice/vengeance aided by a jaded yet dutiful lawman (Michael Shannon). Susan is unsettled by the story’s

violence and viciousness and, given that Edward has both dedicated the book to her and asked for her notes, finds herself recalling their relationship and reflecting on her life choices. Is ‘Nocturnal Animals’ Edward’s allegorical rendering of the heartlessness with which she treated him and his simmering resentment, or perhaps a veiled threat? Whatever the case, it certainly succeeds in getting under her skin. While ‘A Single Man’ was an elegant, poignant and heartbreakingly bittersweet piece, this is an altogether meaner beast; visualized with the stylish elan which seems to be a hallmark of Ford’s film work, but this time with a distinctly nasty undercurrent. The Nocturnal Animals of Edward’s tale are red in tooth and claw and bleed into Susan’s world of luxury and privilege, imbuing the atmosphere with a sense of unseen danger. In the hands of a hack director this film could have been a luridly graphic and pulpy exercise, taking a sledgehammer to its finer points. Tom Ford has instead produced a work of surprising subtlety, depth and resonance. He is helped here in no small part by an outstanding cast; Adams and Gyllenhaal are on superb form and there are excellent turns, too, from Michael Shannon and Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the chief antagonist of Edward’s story. The end product is a class act on many levels. Ford is clearly a purveyor of seductive high cinematic style but never at the expense of the film’s characters, story or themes. Here he invites us to contemplate the nature of guilt and remorse, the twisted paths we take through life and where they lead us, where our ambition takes us and at what cost, how we treat those we love, what emotional violence is wrought and what repercussions may one day have to be reckoned with.

Exciting Music at Seven Jazz

City Varieties Music Hall is gearing up for another festive frolic as this year’s famous Rock ‘n’ Roll Panto prepares to hit the town bringing with it all the usual hilarity. This year ‘Sleeping Beauty’ gets the Rock ‘n’ Roll treatment when it bursts onto the stage on Saturday 26th November and runs until Sunday 8th January. “Our Rock’n’Roll Pantos have been extremely popular since they were first introduced in 2011”, says Ian Sime, General Manager at City Varieties. “They have grown year on year and have now become a Christmas tradition for families in Leeds and beyond.” Billed as a hilarious, high-speed show, audiences this year will find themselves singing along to The Eagles, Whitney Houston, Marvin Gaye and Cher to name but a few. With all the familiar characters, corny

jokes and the added bonus of a full-blown, and now legendary, ‘boulder fight’, Sleeping Beauty promises to be a spectacular show that has something for the whole family. “The pantos are part music gig and part stage show”, said Ian. “They boast stunning staging, colourful costumes and great pop and rock music – just make sure you book early!” Tickets (£14 - £25) are available from 0113 243 0808 or online at cityvarieties. co.uk

Seven Jazz has some exciting music in the run up to Christmas. On 1st December two well known musicians on the UK jazz scene, Nikki Iles and Stan Sulzmann, make a welcome return to Seven Arts. Their new CD, ‘Stardust’, celebrates a shared love of songs, as well as featuring original compositions by both of them. Support is from Leeds bassist Sam Jackson and his folktinged band ‘Drawing Hands’. The Sunday afternoon concerts continue to flourish. Classically trained jazz singer and Otley GP, Emily Brown brings her quartet to Inkwell on 4th December. Health & Fitness

Walking in Roundhay with Mental Health Mates Inspired by author and journalist Bryony Gordon’s Mental Health Mates walk in Clapham, Kate Buckingham contacted her to start a walk in Leeds. The Leeds walks are proving to be a great success with good attendance and great feedback.

The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is looking for volunteers for a new fundraising group in North Leeds. The group will hold fundraising events and activities in the community, generating vital funds to support the fight against heart disease. BHF has a network of over 200 fundraising groups in the UK and together they raise over £2 million every year. oronary heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer. Around 84,880 people are living with cardivascular disease, around 10% of the populatiuon in Leeds. The BHF is committed to funding half a billion pounds of new research over the next five years and is currently funding 19.8m of research at the

University of Leeds. This research is central to discovering vital treatments for heart and circulatory conditions. For more information about the fundraising group, upcoming events and how to get involved contact Sue Green, West Yorkshire Fundraising Manager on 01274 548324 or email greens@BHF.org.uk

The aim of the walks is to get people out of the house to take some light exercise, be in a safe place to chat about their mental health, or whatever else is on their minds and, essentially, to make them feel less alone. Kate also decided to start a Mindfulness Colouring Club once a month for people who are less mobile so they too can benefit from meeting likeminded people.

The next Mental Health Mates Walk, a Christmas Special, will be on Saturday 10th December. Meet outside the Lakeside Café, Rounday Park at 2pm (look out for Kate holding a balloon!). There will be non-alcoholic mulled wine to warm the cockles! For further information, contact Kate at 07896 273554, katebuckingham@me.com, or visit www.mentalhealthmates.co.uk

Breast Cancer Haven recently launched its first fundraising group in Yorkshire to help raise both funds and awareness across the region.

“We are thrilled to see so many supporters come together to form our first fundraising group”, said fundraiser Lizzie Sanders. “The group will help us raise awareness and funds here in Yorkshire and support us at our events, including this year’s Carol Service at Leeds Minster.” To find out more about Breast Cancer Haven or its upcoming events, please call 0113 284 7803 or visit breastcancerhaven. org.uk

reast Cancer Haven is a national charity with a centre in Yorkshire that provides care and support for people with breast cancer, helping them to achieve the best possible quality of life. It also offers advice on practical things like money and work, helps to combat stress, exhaustion and nausea, and advises on healthy eating and exercise. Above all, it ensure there will always be someone for people to talk to about their fears.

Younger Life

School Saves Life of Young Footballer The First Aid Team at Leeds West Academy recently saved the life of one of its Sixth Form students, who collapsed suddenly whilst playing football.

he Mini Mermaid Running Club is a programme that encourages physical activity and self-confidence in girls. Feeling that not enough was being done to address girls’ self confidence at an early enough age, Hannah Corne decided to introduce a programme here in Leeds that ‘s running successfully in America. She has already worked with girls at Moor Allerton Hall Primary and Richmond Hill and recently girls from St Matthew’s and Richmond Hill Primaries took part in their first 5km in Roundhay Park. “This programme isn’t just about getting girls’ up and running”, said Hannah. “We explore the reasons behind why girls’ self-confidence is low and how this correlates to their lack of movement and activity. Crucially, we don’t focus on how fast they are or competing against others, we focus on their inner self and help them discover how movement and activity not only benefits their physical health but also their mental health.”

With the majority of girls in the UK not active enough to reach levels that will improve their health, and studies showing that girls as young as seven are overly concerned with their appearance and demonstrating low self confidence, there couldn’t be a more appropriate time to implement such a programme. Mini Mermaid Running Club UK has the support of the Jane Tomlinson Appeal, which donated funds to help 100 girls complete the programme this year. For more information, contact hannah@minimermaidrunningclub.org

The Sixth Form’s successful CTA Football Academy was in training, when one of its students, who had no previous medical history of concern, suddenly collapsed on the pitch. Having ascertained that he wasn’t breathing, the school’s First Aid Team was alerted and quickly administered CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation). The school’s AED (Automated External Defibrillator) was also used whilst awaiting the emergency services. The AED diagnosed a life-threatening arrhythmia and administered two shocks whilst staff rotated CPR. Statistically, using a defibrillator with effective CPR within 3-5 minutes of cardiac arrest increases survival potential from 6% to 74%. An air ambulance landed in the grounds and whisked him off to hospital. The student showed a remarkable recovery in intensive care – thanks to the quick reaction of the First Aid Team. Its success highlights the importance of First Aid training and AEDs in public places. Leeds West Academy’s First Aid Team comprises over 20 individuals who are fully qualified in CPR and the use of AEDs, and all regularly trained by the First On Scene group. Two hundred and seventy children die in the UK each year after suffering a Sudden Cardiac Arrest at school. This figure could be radically reduced with the increased provision of AEDs.

eorgie Grant, a Sixth Form student at Gateways School, was recently awarded the Sir Roger Moore Certificate of Excellence Award for achieving Grade 8 Gold Medal for Acting – the highest mark awarded nationally. Georgie took the New Era examination earlier this year, the focus of which was monologues. Speaking of Georgie’s performance, the examiner commented: “It was an absolute delight to witness. You are an outstanding actress and I wish you a successful career in performing arts”. Georgie is currently studying English, Music and Drama at A Level and hopes to read English and Drama at University. Her ultimate dream would be a career in acting.

There is no better way to bring young people together than through sport he Cougars Club (est. 2011) is open to boys and girls from the age of five. Players are drawn from Chapeltown and surrounding areas, including Chapel Allerton, Moortown, Oakwood and Harehills. The specially-commissioned clothing was handed over to Cougars founder and head coach Steve Walker by Unity’s chief executive Ali Akbor and director of regeneration Wayne Noteman after a training session at the Mandela Community Centre. They were joined by Ronnie the Rhino representing the Leeds Rhinos Foundation which supports Chapeltown Cougars through the Leeds Rhinos Club Ambassadors Scheme.

“There is no better way to bring young people together than through sport and, in their short history, Chapeltown Cougars have been remarkably successful in doing this”, said Ali Akbor, Chief Executive, Unity Homes and Enterprise. “We are delighted to be associated with the club and have Unity’s name displayed on the smart new kit.” For further information Chapeltown Cougars, contact Avril Sanderson on 07708 000035.

Gateways Netball Team Unbeaten Across West Yorkshire he U14 Netball team at Gateways School, Harewood, recently won the West Yorkshire Netball Tournament. The team was unbeaten across all six of their matches, playing against teams from GSAL, Wakefield Girls and Bradford Grammar. They will now advance to the Yorkshire tournament and hopefully the Nationals. “This is a fantastic achievement for our girls”, said Dr Tracy Johnson, Headmistress. “Many people mistakenly believe that sporting opportunities may be limited in smaller schools. Having beaten all the, much bigger, competition into touch – I would beg to differ!”

A Fantastic Opportunity for Year Six Children

CISV is a global organisation dedicated to educating and inspiring children through building intercultural friendships, cooperation and understanding.

Children come together from many different countries to take part in a variety of educational, cultural and fun activities

he CISV Village is a campbased programme for 11-year olds lasting 28 days. Children come together from many different countries to take part in a variety of educational, cultural and fun activities. Each Village welcomes delegations (two boys, two girls and an adult leader) from 10 -12 countries, creating a safe, fun setting where children can learn about each other’s lives and cultures, and how to communicate, cooperate and live together. The learning experiences and friendships will last a lifetime. CISV programmes have a powerful and positive impact on children, giving them an understanding of their part in our global community. Whilst the emphasis is on fun and friendship, the aim is to educate and inspire young people so they can realise their full potential. The curriculum is age-appropriate and delivered through an informal, ‘learning by doing’ approach. In previous years delegations have

spent time in North and South America, Japan, and numerous locations across Europe. The Village programme costs approx. £1,100. All leaders are DBS checked and have received training so you can be assured of the high quality of supervision and care. If you are interested in nominating your child for selection, you are invited to attend a CISV information evening in North Leeds on Thursday 5th January 2017. Selection Day is on Saturday 14th January. For details, please contact Lianne Collins at on 07950 116098 or cisvleedslianne@gmail.com

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Chapel Allerton, Moortown & Roundhay areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
