WILLIAM OSBURN (1793-1875) MERCHANT, EGYPTOLOGIST, WRITER

In 1824 an extraordinary event took place in Leeds, in the presence of a circle of the most eminent men of the town – the solemn opening after three thousand years of the ornate sealed coffin of the Egyptian mummy donated to the Society by the wealthy banker, Edward Blayds of Oulton Hall. The place was Philosophical Hall in Park Row, the home of the recently formed Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society. Among those present was William Osburn, Secretary of the Society, who recorded the opening of the coffin, the slow, delicate unwrapping of the 40 layers of bandage, and the analytical examination of the body. He worked on the interpretation of the coffin’s inscriptions to reveal its secrets. His detailed account, published in 1828, remains a fine example of early research work and shows Leeds leading the way in this new area of knowledge. William Osburn was a wine and spirit merchant, who joined his father’s business when he was 18. Educated at Leeds Grammar School, and later Cambridge University, he had a wide range of interests – in travel, other lands and cultures, history, theology. In his early 20s he was an enthusiastic founder member of the new Leeds ‘Phil and Lit’ and gave frequent lectures there. Alongside his intellectual interests he shared his father’s fundamentalist religious views, which led him into active campaigns on behalf of the poor and exploited: condemning the use of children to sweep chimneys, promoting working class education (he was a Sunday School teacher for 40 years), and passionately supporting improved conditions for factory children. But what absorbed him most in the 1820s were the new, exciting discoveries in Egypt, now in British possession - the first mummies from excavated or despoiled tombs were on display in London, together with the unique Rosetta stone, seized from the French. With matching inscriptions in three languages it provided the key to deciphering hieroglyphic writing. He studied the first works on the subject, acquired a cast of the stone, learnt how to interpret the characters, and was able

to identify the Leeds mummy as that of the important priest Nesyamun. He wrote articles and gave public lectures on his work. And increasingly he focussed on the association between ancient Egypt and the truth of the Bible, publishing the first of several books on this subject in 1841. His personal life seemed secure. After marrying in 1829 he and his wife Ann had four sons and two daughters over the next nine years. They lived in elegant style in a fine house in Preston Place (part of the University campus now). But his business ran into trouble. Was he too obsessed with his studies and writing to attend to it? Were his wealthy clients upset by his social and political campaigns, particularly bitter during the 1832 election when he led the local movement for factory reform? Whatever the reason, in 1843 he and his business partner were declared bankrupt. It was a catastrophe for his family – they had to leave their comfortable home, and the family was split up, the younger children left to the care of relatives. Osburn himself became a rootless figure, lodging in various houses, obsessively researching and writing. He travelled, once at least to Egypt to see its wonders himself, and published five more successful books, on religion and ancient

Egypt, including the comprehensive ‘Monumental History of Egypt’. He had a respected reputation, was a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, still gave occasional lectures, and served on the committee for the Leeds contribution to the 1851 Great Exhibition. His social concerns remained the same. In 1857 he read a poem to the Leeds Phil and Lit which became known for its dark picture of mid Victorian Leeds, beginning: ‘The AIRE below is doubly dyed and damned/ The Air above with lurid smoke is crammed’. It continues with a reminder of the deep social divides: ‘The one his villa and a carriage keeps/His squalid brother in a garret sleeps’. Did his wealthy listeners feel uncomfortable? He finally retired to Guernsey and died in 1875. His children had to cope without his support. His daughter Lucy, trained by Florence Nightingale, became a leading figure in the development of nursing in Australia (and is the subject of a recent biography); his other daughter, after an unhappy period as a governess, ran a successful school near Harrogate. His sons had to make their way in the world independently. The mummy of Nesyamun remains one of Leeds’ museum’s treasures. It has been and is still the subject of modern scientific investigations, but the story of that first unwrapping almost 200 years ago continues to intrigue and impress.

Simcha Gallery, located on the balcony of the Corn Exchange, is unique in Leeds in having within it a thriving jewellery and artists’ studio where people can see work being made. In an artistic stripped pine setting, natural textures and forms are the inspiration for silver and gold jewellery, art cards and clothing accessories, all handmade by Stephen and Anne Roper, and for ceramics by several UK makers, not found elsewhere in the city. Now in it’s second year, the gallery is a sought-after destination for special handmade items. Stephen’s organic jewellery has free flowing lines and organic textures. “I love Art Nouveau and medieval jewellery”, he said. “I create tactile pieces that have both a contemporary and ancient feel, adorned with beautiful gems like Peridot and Tourmaline, as well as Diamonds and Sapphires. I apply traditional metalworking techniques in an original way.” Anne has a modern folk style that has a dream like Chagall feel. Mixed media art cards and pictures are complemented by finely embellished scarves, shawls and jewellery, enhanced with fine crochet, beading, and embroidery. www.simchagallery.co.uk

Million Dollar Quartet Set to Rock Leeds Grand n 4th December 1956, one man brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley to play together for the first – and only – time. His name was Sam Phillips; the place was Sun Records, and that night they made rock ‘n’ roll history. ‘Million Dollar Quartet’ became the name for the impromptu jam session when an album of that night was finally released in 1981. Now, ‘Million Dollar Quartet’ is a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical and West End hit and is on its first ever UK tour, hitting Leeds Grand Theatre from Monday 7th – Saturday 12th November. At the time of the recording Elvis Presley was already a star – albeit now with RCA records, Phillips having sold him for $35,000 - Johnny Cash had a host of hits with Sun Records, Carl Perkins had had Photo: Darren success with ‘Blue Suede Shoes’, and Jerry Lee Lewis Bell was an unknown. Set in a small studio, ‘Million Dollar Quartet’ is narrated by Sam Phillips, played by Jason Donovan. He switches from speaking directly to the audience, giving them the history of Sun Records and its signings, to exchanging stories and witticisms with the quartet, and then steps back completely to allow Elvis, Carl, Johnny and Jerry to perform. The show has a score of rock hits including ‘Blue Suede Shoes’, ‘Hound Dog’, ‘I Walk The Line’ and ‘Great Balls of Fire’. Elvis, Carl, Johnny and Jerry are brought to life not only through the

actors’ musical talent and embodiment of each well-known character, but also through the script, written by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux. “You’d be forgiven for thinking that there is only one person who can play the piano like Jerry Lee Lewis - and that’s Jerry Lee Lewis”, said Faye Dawson, The Grand’s PR Manager. “Well, it turns out there are two Martin Kaye is amazing.” Martin played the role of Jerry Lee Lewis on the first North American tour of ‘Million Dollar Quartet’, which led him to open the Las Vegas Production at Harrah’s. Robbie Durham plays Johnny Cash; Ross William Wild joins the cast as Elvis; Matt Wycliffe appears as Carl Perkins; and Katie Ray is Dyanne – all of whom have played leading roles in major musicals. “The cast is superb, giving performances that will blow you away”, continued Faye. “The show is a wonderful insight into one night in rock ‘n’ roll history and all its players. If you like rock ‘n’ roll and its roots, Million Dollar Quartet is most definitely for you.” Tickets (£19.50 - £38) are available from 0844 848 2700 or online at leedsgrandtheatre. com

Ross Noble’s ‘Brain Dump’ at Leeds Town Hall A true master of surreal tangents, Ross Noble will bring his new show ‘Brain Dump’ to Leeds Town Hall on 30th November / 1st December at 8pm. s always, Ross has lots of stuff backing up in his head and it’s time to let it all out. He is famed for his super quick freewheeling style and highly imaginative flights of fancy. His on-stage exuberance and cerebral style have established him as one of the UK’s top comedians. Starting out in comedy 25 years ago, Ross has completed 14 sell out tours, released nine top selling stand-up DVDs, and ranked tenth in Channel 4’s poll of the 100 Greatest Stand-Ups. He is also a regular on panel shows like ‘QI’ and ‘Have I Got News for You’. Ross’s talent for abstract streams of consciousness is always a delight. The

Evening Standard described his show as being “Whimsy and wackiness from an unstoppable mind”. “Noble’s extemporising shtick is near unique and it can be dreamily funny to witness these streams of nonsense plucked from thin air” The Guardian “Beautifully twisted thoughts without resorting to the overly surreal” The Times “The supreme master of spontaneous stand-up and true king of surreal flights of fantasy” Time Out Tickets (£25) are available from 0113 376 0318 or www.leedstownhall.co.uk Recommended for age 15+

They are joined by nurse Alma, Gabriel’s sister Kassie, and her son Ryan. The play explores the magic of theatre and the imagination, and addresses questions of sexuality, gender confusion and human mortality, with McGuinness’s trademark mix of humour and piercing poignancy. Andy Love is in the director’s seat with a cast that includes some of York’s finest actors: Richard Easterbrook (Gabriel), Paul Baxter (Conrad), Rosy Rowley (Alma), Jeanette Hunter (Kassie), and Stu Freestone (Ryan) “At Wildgoose Theatre we want to put on plays that appeal to us, present us with challenges, either technically or artistically, but which won’t necessary be familiar to theatregoers”, said Andy. “‘Gates of Gold’ fits that bill perfectly.” Tickets (£12/ £10) are available from www.wildgoosetheatre.com and Seven Arts www.sevenleeds.co.uk

Robin Hood – Not What he’s Cracked Up to Be? obin Hood is probably the most famous legendary outlaw in the world – portrayed in a myriad of ballads, books and films as an amazing archer who wore green clothes and led a merry band of men. Of course, he robbed the rich and gave to the poor. Writer Peter Morrison does not think it was as simple as that. The main character of his recent novella ‘A Lonely Road’, set in the year 1214, is not Robin Hood, who is dead and buried at its beginning, but a young advocate, Thomas Sturdy, who

Pictured: Peter Morrison

comes across his grave in the forest. He goes on to conduct a full investigation, conducting interviews with those who associated with the dead man, like a certain William Scarlet. Peter will be reading from his book and explaining his research at a free preliminary ‘Between the Lines’ event for Headingley LitFest on Thursday 17th November, 7pm in Headingley Library. (The main part of the LitFest will be next March.) “Northern England at a time of political flux and shifting loyalties is evoked in startling detail in this book”, said LitFest secretary Richard Wilcocks. “It all feels very authentic and it helps make it a proper page-turner.” Peter Morrison lives in Keighley and is Chairman of Airedale Writers’ Circle. “The novella is making a comeback – not before time”, he said. “I wanted to write a short but intricate story which would hold the reader’s interest all the way, whilst evoking a sense of the distant past. Hopefully a work of fiction with a difference.”

The Thoresby Society is putting on a series of lunchtime talks in November about women in Leeds in the nineteenth century. he talks will take place at The Leeds Library, 18 Commercial Street, LS1 6AL, on Wednesdays, starting at 12.45pm and lasting for an hour. Everyone is welcome and admission is free. On 9th November, Vine Pemberton Joss will talk about the work of the Yorkshire Ladies Council. They were ‘the women who changed Leeds through philanthropic initiatives’, including the founding of the Leeds School of Cookery, Babies Welcome, and the West Riding Nursing Association. Their public lectures on women’s health and hygiene facilitated the opening in Leeds of a medical practice by Ethel Pechey – one of the first women doctors in Britain. On 16th November, Janet Douglas talks about ‘Leeds and the 1866 Women’s Suffrage Petition’. Of the 1,499 women who signed the petition, 101 were from Leeds, largely from the Woodhouse district, living in streets that you have probably walked along. On 23rd November, Derek Martin will speak about ‘Nineteenth Century Women Athletes’. While it was only in the 1970s that female athletes were allowed to run races longer than 800 metres, in nineteenth century Leeds

Ethel Pechey – one of the first women doctors in Britain opened a practice in Leeds

there were events where you could witness women performing walks of up to a thousand miles! Finally, on 30th November, Ann Wilkinson will talk about the ‘Little Owls Society of Leeds’ founded in 1879. Membership was by invitation and included the daughters of some of the prestigious families in Leeds. Some of the subjects they discussed were very controversial. For example, in 1888 the subject for a meeting was ‘Individualism v. Socialism’. The Thoresby Society is the Leeds Historical Society, founded in 1889. Chaophraya Transforms Thai Dining Experience Leeds is certainly well served by Thai restaurants. One that we had been meaning to visit was Chaophraya on Swinegate, but somehow we had never made it. Their introduction of a new menu claiming to transform Thai dining was a great incentive. haophraya decided to tweak its already popular menu. Up to now it had been rather Bangkok orientated, perhaps even a little westernised. It was time to re-examine their offering and rediscover some regional cuisine. Chaophraya chefs went back to Thailand and trawled certain Thai provinces for new flavours – including Chiang Mai, the Maeklong River, Khanchanaburi and the banks of the Chaophraya River in Bangkok. “The launch of our new menu is a really exciting development for Chaophraya”, said Nattawut Leela, Development Chef of Chaophraya. “Over the past six months our senior culinary brigade travelled to Thailand to research the latest developments in Thai cuisine and we have blended this with our expert chefs’ knowledge. With a dash of imagination we believe we have created a menu that takes Thai dining to a new level.” The new menu offers a mix of dishes inspired by their travels and featuring tastes from across Thailand. Signature dishes include chamber aged sirloin steak cooked on a Himalayan salt

block (which a neighbouring table ordered and it looked fantastic!), soft shell crab served on a bed of mango salad and firm favourites like Thai Tacos and Phad Thai. As we were feeling the cold that

evening, we were tempted by soup to start. Chicken TomKha - a mildly spicy, rich, fragrant soup with chicken cooked in galangal, lemongrass, chilli, kafir lime leaves and shimeji mushrooms – was delicious. But the Prawn Tom-Yum – a really spicy hot and sour soup with king prawns, mushrooms, lemongrass, galangal, roasted chilli and lime leaves flavoured with Thai herbs – was superb! And it was so beautifully served, the bowl piled with fat prawns arriving first, then the spicy broth was delicately poured over from a little spouted pot. I could have happily dined on several helpings of Tom-Yum and nothing else. But move on we did, choosing Crispy Pork Belly with Thai Basil served with sugar snap peas and peppers tossed with fresh chillies, garlic and hot basil leaves – a distinctive, very tasty Thai take on pork belly; and steamed Sea Bass Fillets (Pla Ga Pong Neung Manao) with coriander root, lemongrass, galangal, lime leaves, served with fresh chilli and lime sauce and a salad of yellow soy beans, sugar snap peas, choisum, chillies and mint – absolutely mouth-wateringly delicious! We rounded the meal off with Mango Meringue Roll mango and passion fruit meringue roll with roasted almonds and lightly caramelised strawberries; and the Thai Dessert Sampler – a duet of Thai pancakes with pandan leaf custard and mango sticky rice. This is a big restaurant on two levels, but it is cleverly split up with bright bars and open dining areas alongside secluded, more intimate areas with soft lighting, perfect for a romantic evening or small family celebration. Throughout there is interesting lighting, Thai sculpture and art. The vision of Kim Kaewkraikhot and Martin Stead, who started the Chaophraya chain (Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh) was to present authentic Thai cuisine and genuine Thai hospitality and Chaophraya does that in spades. Individual dishes are priced from £6.50 for starters, £10.50 for mains and £7.50 for desserts.

New Teaching Material about The Holocaust for Primary Schools New training material designed to teach primary school children about The Holocaust was launched recently at Leeds Trinity University by Holocaust survivor, Dr Martin Kapel, who also shared his personal experiences of being a child refugee on the Kindertransport from Poland to England.

Pictured: Beverley Forrest (Leeds Trinity), Dr Martin Kapel, Jenny Carson (Holocaust Educational Trust), Dr Paul Dickinson (Director of Institute of Childhood & Education, Leeds Trinity).

eveloped by The Holocaust Educational Trust, the Teachers’ Guide, which accompanies free online lesson plans and resources, provides guidance for Year 6 teachers wanting to discuss the history of The Holocaust in the classroom. The Trust has been working closely with Leeds Trinity over the past five years to ensure the next generation of teachers feels confident and knowledgeable enough to engage children in the history of the Holocaust.

“With our roots as a teacher training college and our reputation for graduate employment, many of our trainee teachers are working in primary schools as soon as they graduate”, said Beverley Forrest, Lecturer in Primary Education at Leeds Trinity University. “We want to make sure they receive handson experience during their time here, and recognise the value in teaching younger children about historical events such as The Holocaust.”

Alex Maws, Head of Education at the Holocaust Educational Trust, said: “By the later stages of the primary curriculum students are emotionally and intellectually ready to explore complex and challenging histories. Study of age-appropriate themes related to The Holocaust enables them to begin to examine a defining moment in human history which raises fundamental questions about human identity, behaviour and ethics.” To request the new teaching materials, visit www.het.org.uk

Tibetan Lama Visits Leeds Buddhist Centre Jamyang Buddhist Centre has a double reason to celebrate this Autumn as it approaches its 20th year and welcomes Dagri Rinpoche, an eminent Tibetan Buddhist Lama, to the city.

he Buddhist Centre, now on St. Paul’s Street, began with a small group of people interested in Buddhism meeting up weekly to learn how to meditate. Today the Centre provides weekly Buddhist and secular meditation and mindfulness classes, and also hosts teachers and scholars of Tibetan Buddhism from across Europe, Australia, America and Asia. “We welcome over 3,000 people to Jamyang Buddhist Centre annually”, said Kerry Prest, Director JBCL. “As we approach our 20th year we are launching a fundraising campaign to purchase a property in the centre of Leeds. This will make us more sustainable over the longterm and able to continue to provide an oasis of calm in the city.”

During his visit to Yorkshire, Dagri Rinpoche will also visit the Himalayan Garden at Harewood House, as a guest of David Lascelles, the Earl of Harewood and Patron of Jamyang Buddhist Centre. For further information, visit www. jamyangleeds.co.uk

Mirrabook to Develop Digital Resources for Young People with Diabetes The Leeds-based Mirrabook Development Trust CIC was recently awarded Lottery funding to develop a series of digital learning resources about diabetes for children and young people with the condition. “The resources will promote understanding about diabetes and better self-management amongst children and young people”, said Cathy Thomas-Varcoe, Founder and Managing Director of the Trust. “We will also explore feelings associated with living with diabetes, and support organisations that can provide ageappropriate support. Ultimately, it is anticipated that these resources will help to reduce the need for visits to the GP and A&E, and hospitalisations.” Mirrabook is a centre for excellence in digital learning. It offers a range of services associated with digital learning to the education and corporate training sectors, and all profits from these services are invested into helping it achieve its aim – which is: To develop a free, quality digital learning experience for children and young people that will help them achieve their potential and not be limited by socio-economic background, race, gender, disability or learning difficulty. It is anticipated that the resources for the diabetes project will be available within six months. If you or a family member would like to be involved in the trial, please contact info@mirrabook.org.uk, or visit www. mirrabook.org.uk

Find Out About Fostering with Barnardo’s n its 150th year, Barnardo’s is appealing for more people to come forward to look after the 52,000 children who live in foster care in England. Today, three in four children in care in England are fostered. And with 990 children in Leeds foster care, Barnardo’s is inviting prospective foster parents in the area to find out more. “Barnardo’s believes that children and young people need a family environment that is safe, secure and nurturing, for them to grow and develop their full potential”, said Sarah

Whittington, Operations Manager with Barnardo’s Family Placement for Yorkshire. “Fostering placements can last for a few weeks or several years depending on the circumstances, so we are looking for a wide range of people who can offer different kinds of support. “There is no typical foster carer for Barnardo’s - we welcome all applications regardless

of sexuality, ethnicity, religion or marital status and whether or not you have children of your own. So long as you have a spare room and are able to commit time to the children and young people, Barnardo’s will commit to you in terms of training, support and a good financial package of fees and allowances. “When you change a child’s life by fostering we’ll help you deal with the changes in yours.” For further information, call 0113 263 1464 or email afby@barnardos.org.uk

Bloomin Yorkshire’s New Rose! arlier this year, the BloominYorkshire Charity Foundation launched a design competition for school children of all ages. The idea was to design a rose that would be manufactured, sold and planted to create a massive public art display consisting of tens of thousands of roses in York Museum Gardens in 2018. The winning design was chosen recently and it is by Isabel Taylor (10) from Pudsey Primrose Hill Primary School. Isabel was presented with a trophy and an Ipad by Coronation Street actor Colson Smith at a surprise assembly at her school. The school also received vouchers and equipment for arts and craft materials to the value of £3,000.

Pictured: Colson Smith, Isabel Taylor & Janice Richardsin

The challenge now is to raise the money to mass produce Isabel’s rose then sell them. This will be a major fundraising event for BloominYorkshire which aims to raise vital funds for organ donation and kidney research. Bloomin’ Yorkshire was set up by Janice Richardson, a 52 year old Yorkshire dialysis patient from Horsforth, who was inspired by the fabulous poppy display at The Tower of London and Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Janice refuses to let her illness get her down, despite two failed kidney transplants and surviving life threatening total organ failure. She is now throwing her energy behind this project to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation and to raise £1,000,000 for two charities, Kidney Research and Live Life Give Life. News From Your Councillors Cllr

DAN COHEN Alwoodley

he bite in the air tells us that Winter is almost upon us, with all the joys it brings. No sooner will North Leeds Life have hit your doormat or local store, than it’s Halloween. As recent years have shown, we seem to be replicating the American approach to this ‘holiday’ with ever more trick or treating and more extravagantly themed parties and costumes.

Perhaps it is also time to take on another custom from overseas, so that those who wish to participate in the spooky shenanigans, can separate themselves from those who do not (a scheme run fairly successfully by the Sandhill Residents Association last year). The idea is simple – if you are happy to receive a visit from trick or treaters, place a pumpkin or other halloweeny decoration on your front door or somewhere easily visible from the street; if you don’t wish to receive them, dispense with the halloweeny decoration. Trick or treaters will visit only those houses decorated for Halloween. I am not promising for one moment that this will save those who cannot abide this annual ghostfest, but year by year we might be able to establish this as the way Halloween can work for everyone. The other joy at this time of year – or despair depending on whether or not you have pets – is fireworks and people letting them off at inappropriate times. Each year I am asked what does the law say about the times one is allowed to set off fireworks and where one may set them off.

So here is a very brief summary: with the exception of Bonfire Night itself, New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, it is against the law to set off fireworks between the hours of 11pm and 7am. On bonfire night, and only on 5th November itself, the cut off time is midnight, for New Year’s Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year it is 1am. It is always illegal to set off, or throw, fireworks (including sparklers) in the street or any other public places. My very unscientific poll suggests that these times are very late for fireworks to be set off and that good neighbourliness would be to follow the general rule of thumb ‘Up ‘til eight is great, after nine is rarely fine’, as for Bonfire Night, again my very unscientific poll suggests that after 10pm fireworks are generally not welcome. Perhaps these rules will help everybody enjoy the coming month a little bit more. Do remember, for all local queries your Alwoodley councillors are always here to help.

very Autumn geese fly in their hundreds of thousands south from the Arctic to spend the Winter in and around the UK. Their arrival and the movements of these huge vocal flocks along our shores must be one of the most impressive wildlife spectacles the UK has to offer. Several different species are involved, of which Barnacle Geese number around 64,000. Their colouring is superficially similar to the Canada goose, but they are smaller with a mostly creamy-white face, black neck and breast, pale grey flanks and a white belly.

It has been discovered that two distinct populations of Barnacle Geese – those breeding in Svalbard (in Norway) and in Greenland - winter exclusively in the UK, with the Svalbard population of 33,000 birds

reliant on just one location – the Solway Firth. Aside from these large flocks in the west of the UK and Ireland, smaller groups can be found in the east of the UK, but can sometimes Photo: turn out to be feral, not wild, Andy birds, as the Barnacle Goose Hay is popular with wildfowl RSPBcollectors. The unusual name images. of these birds comes from a com strange old legend that they grew from barnacles on driftwood in the sea. This perhaps came about because the birds were never seen in Spring, as they bred in such remote Arctic regions.

“November always seemed to me the Norway of the year - Emily Dickinson In the kitchen garden Vegetable growers can harvest Brussels sprouts, winter cabbage, kale, leeks and parsnips this month. If you grow rhubarb or artichokes, it’s good to tidy up any debris from around the plants and mulch them with some well rotted compost to protect them through the winter. You can also plant new rhubarb plants now, as well as garlic cloves, fruit trees and fruit bushes. I like to bring in a few sprigs of mint for the winter, they soon form roots in a jar of water and can be potted up and kept on the kitchen windowsill where they will keep growing to provide fresh leaves for favourite recipes.

Dried Decorations

nest boxes

Gardens and hedgerows may still have plenty of dried seed-heads such as teasels, honesty or poppies, as well as sprigs of berries. Why not bring some indoors for winter arrangements? They can be sprayed silver and gold for a touch of festive glamour once they are thoroughly dry.

Tracy Foster - www. tracyfostergarden design.co.uk

Wildlife It is the month for bonfires but also a time for hedgehogs to hibernate in piles of wood and sticks, so do please remember to check and make sure your bonfires are wildlife-free before lighting them. Many garden birds will continue to visit throughout the Winter and will appreciate any food and water you put out for them. Now that the trees are bare and vegetation has died back, it is an opportunity to put up nest boxes so that birds can raise their families in your garden next Spring. Choose sheltered sites away from strong sunlight and driving winds. According to the RSPB, many species start scouting for nest sites in the Autumn and may use the boxes for roosting in the winter time.

FILM

REVIEW

MY SCIENTOLOGY MOVIE DIRECTED BY: JOHN DOWER STARRING: LOUIS THEROUX, ANDREW PEREZ, MARTY RATHBUN

CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 99 MINS It should be no surprise that Louis Theroux’s Scientology Movie has been in gestation for many years. Given the Weird Weekends documentarian’s penchant for seeking out the outre and extreme fringes of human behavior, such fascinatingly strange subject matter must have been irresistible. It’s somewhat unfortunate for Theroux that he was narrowly beaten to the punch by Alex Gibney’s excellent doc, Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief. That film remains the most comprehensive account of the history of the ‘religion’ and a thorough investigation into its structure, belief system and practices. What Theroux’s documentary brings to the table is the personal touch. As the title suggests, ‘My Scientology Movie’ is distinguished by Theroux’s idiosyncratic Gonzo approach; embedding himself within the story as his quest for answers proceeds. From the outset, making a film about Scientology poses its own set of problems. The church is notoriously, intensely secretive and has a reputation for the intimidation and harassment of those who choose to leave. Any attempts by Theroux to reach out to the Scientology high command had been met with silence or the flat refusal of any cooperation which presents the primary obstacle that must be overcome; how does one make a documentary film like this when denied any direct access to the subject.

It’s clear that the weirder things get the more Theroux seems in his element

A stroke of luck then that Theroux manages to connect with Marty Rathbun, an ex-church member who acted as its ‘inspector general’ between 1987 and 2004. Though still unable to speak with high ranking church officials, Theroux and his director settle upon an inventive and resourceful work-around and, with Rathbun’s guidance, set about staging reconstructions of scenes Rathbun may have witnessed inside the church’s headquarters. For this they recruit actors to play out the scenarios and to deliver speeches taken from transcripts of interviews with the sinister and enigmatic head of the Church of Scientology, David Misgavige and with the church’s most famous and vocal celebrity proponent, Tom Cruise. This method of trying to provide a glimpse inside the church actually turns out to be an ingenious touch, lending the proceedings a surreal/meta touch befitting the subject matter. The inclusion of scenes where they audition the actors is revealing in its way, too, considering that the church’s base is situated in that Mecca for starryeyed Hollywood hopefuls, Los Angeles, and Scientology’s long standing association with the entertainment industry. It must be said that the filmmakers strike gold with Andrew

Perez, the young actor they cast to play Misgavige, whose committed and compelling performance is really something to behold. Of course, a journey down the Scientology rabbit hole is inevitably going to get curiouser and curiouser and it isn’t long before Theroux and his film crew find themselves being followed through traffic and being filmed on the street by church members who, one assumes, are making their own movie about a British filmmaker attempting to make a film about Scientology. The Mexican stand-offs of cameramen filming one another provide some of the film’s absurdly hilarious moments. It’s clear that the weirder things get the more Theroux seems in his element. As usual, Theroux’s trademark style; the deadpan, impassive mask, the plaintive tone of perplexity or bewilderment driven by a genuine, desperate desire to understand and a generous measure of compassion for his subjects, provides a good deal of amusement but, when dealing with an organization as clandestine and paranoid as the Church of Scientology, yields little in the way of answers. My Scientology Movie offers no new revelations about its continually confounding subject but it does provide a wildly entertaining ride around the periphery of a truly bonkers pseudo-religious phenomenon. In lieu of conclusions it raises a number of interesting questions and more than its fair share of laughs.

Allerton Grange Cyclists – Fields Hosts Youth Light Up! Football Allerton Grange Fields is hosting a free fitness and football coaching programme for young people aged 11- 17 in North East Leeds, supported and funded by the Roundhay ward councillors.

he programme, which takes place every Thursday (6 - 8pm), is organised by Leeds City Council’s Youth Service team, and delivered in partnership with Leeds United Foundation. It offers young people an opportunity to build confidence and self-esteem, and encourages them to adopt healthier lifestyles, learn new skills, work as a team and respect others. “The Leeds United Foundation is excited to be providing opportunities for children and young people to engage in sporting activities within disadvantaged communities”, said Michael Kinsey, Operations Manager, Leeds United Foundation. “By working with Leeds City Council we are able to develop programmes that work towards reducing anti-social behaviour, alcohol and drugs misuse, knife crime and many more low level criminal activities highlighted within the community.”

The vision is to build safer, stronger, more respectful communities through involving young people and encouraging them to become active citizens within their community. “Friends of Allerton Grange Fields are delighted to partner with The Youth Service and Leeds United Foundation on this exciting coaching programme”, said Bhupinder Dev, Chair of Allerton Grange Fields. “Former Leeds United football legends David Batty and Brian Deane have graced the sports pitches at Allerton Grange Fields during their youth as they were both Allerton Grange School pupils, so it’s great to work with Leeds United to develop future stars.” For further information on the Leeds United Foundation Youth Football programme at Allerton Grange Fields contact Lynne Cherry, Leeds City Council Youth Service on lynne.cherry@leeds.gov.uk

As the days get shorter, Councillor Richard Lewis, the Council’s Executive Member for Regeneration, Transport and Planning, wants to make sure cyclists are safe and using adequate lighting and high-vis clothing to ensure that they can be seen by cars and other vehicles. Although it is the driver’s duty to watch out for cyclists, cyclists can help by dressing appropriately and using the right equipment – Ninja cyclists clad in black from head to toe with neither lights nor helmets can still be spotted around Leeds. “Leeds really is a cycling city”, said Councillor Lewis. “Seeing more and more people cycling is great, as are the benefits of having fewer cars on the road. But, changing light levels can be problematic – what may be full light when you set off can easily be twilight by the time you get home. Drivers need to look out for cyclists at all times and cyclists can help by being prepared and using lights appropriate lights and clothing. “We want all road users to be able to co-exist. To do that everyone needs to play their part. For drivers this is being alert at all times, and for cyclists this is making sure they can be seen.”

‘Rudolf’ and ‘The Allerton Witches’ Set to Thrill Grange at The Playhouse Students From the fuzzily heart-warming to the terrifyingly terrific, enjoy the magical journeys of two very different heroes at West Yorkshire Playhouse this Christmas – everyone’s favourite Christmas reindeer, Rudolf (25th Nov – 31st Dec), and a very brave young boy in Roald Dahl’s ‘The Witches’ (2nd Dec – 21st Jan).

Pictured: Sarah Ingram as Grand High Witch

Photo: Catherine Ashmore

udolf is a very special Reindeer with small hooves, big dreams and an even bigger red nose! All Rudolf wants is to guide Santa’s sleigh, but Reindeer school isn’t working out as he’d planned. With the help of his friend the Ugly Duckling, will Rudolf realise how special he is in time for Christmas Eve? This feel-good, new production is full of laughter and is suitable for children from the age of two. Meanwhile, Roald Dahl’s scariest book is brought to life in a delightfully different show of marvellous music and magic tricks. Witches absolutely detest children.

They find them revolting and are planning to wipe them out like weasels! They want to squish them and squiggle them and make them disappear. But one brave young boy and his grandmother have a plan to get rid of the witches for good… if only they can avoid being turned into mice! With mind-boggling illusions that will leave you flabbergasted, ‘The Witches’ contains stupendously scary bits and is recommended for children aged 5+ and brave grown-ups. ‘The Witches’ is a Curve and Rose Theatre Kingston production in association with West Yorkshire Playhouse.

Design School Rugby Shirt Four students from Allerton Grange School were recently invited by Dylan Hartley, Captain of England Rugby, to take part in a kit design workshop at Wetherby Rugby Club. Working with Canterbury Clothing of New Zealand, the students were given the opportunity to design a team rugby shirt for the school. The All Schools programme, launched in 2012, was one of seven areas identified by the Rugby Football Union in the run up to the 2015 World Cup, to deliver the greatest participation legacy. The project aims to introduce the sport and its core values to a million children and increase the number of secondary state schools playing Rugby Union. Allerton Grange recognises the positive impact rugby can have on both students and the wider community. Like many team sports, it can instill positive behaviour and attitudes that can be carried through life. The workshop taught the students about the history of the England shirt, as well as how to use different techniques and styles to create a design unique to Allerton Grange School. Their design will be produced by Canterbury, who will also supply the school with 20 free shirts.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Chapel Allerton, Moortown & Roundhay areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
