est Yorkshire Combined Authority, in partnership with district authorities and bus operators First West Yorkshire, Arriva and Transdev, is working to produce new, 20-year bus and transport strategies, and it recently launched a three-month consultation on West Yorkshire’s transport systems. Over 70 drop-in sessions are planned to find out what people think about local bus services and the county’s transport network, and the feedback will be used to develop the new strategies. Teams from the Combined Authority will be on hand to answer questions. The Bus and Transport Strategies will support the recently updated Leeds City Region Strategic Economic Plan’s targets of creating 35,700 jobs over the next 20 years, and growing the region’s economy at a faster rate than the national average. They will also be used to update the current West Yorkshire Local Transport Plan, setting out how a modern, effective and integrated transport system can help people make the journeys they need to make. “The Combined Authority has long recognised the important role bus services play in underpinning our economy and has worked with bus operators to achieve improvements such as the MCard smartcard, real-time information and modern, low-emission vehicles”, said Cllr Taj Salam, West Yorkshire Combined Authority Transport Committee. “We want to hear the views of people who use buses, but we also want to hear from those who don’t or won’t use them now. We will also be talking to organisations representing groups such as disabled people, younger and older people, to ensure their views are represented.” Further information on the consultation and drop-in sessions can be found at www. yourtravelyoursay.co.uk and Yourtravelyoursay Facebook page .

A comment from the North West Leeds Transport Forum

DESIGN Kyle Harvey

Major investments within our City and Region in bus and other forms of transport must be properly considered and hopefully the current consultations will identify these, but this does not preclude improving existing provision. Some people are pressing for the adoption of a scheme based on tram-trains and a new link to the airport, however such a scheme could exhaust all available funding and would delay implementation of relatively simple, but longoverdue, improvements elsewhere. It is clear that the A660 corridor from Leeds, north through Headingley and to the north western suburbs can be best served by bus services in the foreseeable future. However, this route could be used to pioneer a new model bus service utilising best available vehicle drive technology, supported by better prioritisation of bus services through signaling and simple road and junction design changes. Across our city and region much could be gained by bringing forward progressive ideas for improvement through a series of relatively modest traffic engineering and management measures. Although each improvement in transport flow might be small, combined they would bring significant benefits, all at a relatively low cost and within a short timescale.

CATHERINE MARY BUCKTON (1826-1904) CAMPAIGNER AND WRITER

In 1870 the ground-breaking Elementary Education Act gave all children the right to education up to age thirteen. School Boards were set up in all the major cities with the urgent task of providing places for all the children who had never had regular schooling – some twenty thousand in Leeds alone. Elections were held for membership of the Board, and for the first time women were allowed to stand for public office. There was bitter competition in Leeds for the fifteen seats, split by religious, political and class loyalties. Two women boldly entered the fray as Liberal candidates. Neither won a place, but for Catherine Mary Buckton it was the start of her long fight for education and child welfare. he was the wife of Joseph Buckton, a prosperous Leeds wool and cloth merchant, living in a comfortable house overlooking Woodhouse Moor. Brought up in London and Wales, the daughter of a doctor, part of a large lively family with distinguished connections in science, philosophy and politics, she was well aware of the desperate living conditions and high death rates of the great industrial cities like Leeds and the urgent need for public health reform. She was already an active member of the Ladies’ Council of the Yorkshire Board of Education, so she was well-informed and at this stage of her life, in her forties with her two children nearly grown-up, she was ready for a challenge. She believed a key approach was through the education of girls, the wives and mothers of the future. Determined to stand again for the Board at the next election in 1873, she agreed meanwhile to run a series of evening courses for working women in Holbeck and Wortley on health, food and hygiene. Knowing most of her audience would be illiterate, she created simple diagrams and experiments to illustrate her points. Her talks proved very popular, not least because of her understanding and empathy with her listeners. She heard many disturbing tales of the superstitions and ignorance which contributed to infant deaths, and she gained insight into the terrible, demoralising conditions many working women lived in. She was encouraged to publish an account of her ‘painful but delightful’ experience, the first step in what was to become a highly successful writing career. In 1873 she won election to the Board, and was to remain the only woman member until her retirement in 1882, on occasion topping the poll. She proved a combative and articulate campaigner for girls to be taught cookery and the principles of health and hygiene, and went round

schools herself to give practical lessons and demonstrations. She designed a special cupboard with all the equipment needed for cookery lessons in the schoolroom and helped to set up training schemes for teachers. Through her work Leeds won a national reputation as a leader in health education. Meanwhile she continued to write and publish, promoting her ideas. Her books ‘Health in the House’, ‘Food and Home Cookery’ and ‘Our Dwellings, Healthy and Unhealthy’, fully illustrated and clearly written, were widely read across the country, not only by women, and reprinted many times. Her love of nature and concern

for the many Leeds children who had no access to gardens led her to institute an annual School Board competition for children to plant and exhibit window boxes, with hundreds of children taking part each year. Her book on this subject, ‘Town and Window Gardening’ (1879) was another popular success, and contributed to her national reputation, winning praise from Prime Minister Gladstone himself. A strong Unitarian, she remained throughout her time on the School Board a supporter of free secular education and religious freedom. Sensitive to the needs and problems of the poor, she was a vociferous fighter on their part in various battles. When she retired in 1882 she published a review of the Board’s work, with a powerful critique of penny-pinching attitudes to education. She believed in the need to provide a sound education for all children, whatever the cost – taxes should be spent on that, she declared, rather than ‘wicked, senseless wars’. She retired to London with her family and published one further book ‘Comfort and Cleanliness’ in 1894. She remained a strong believer in women’s rights and a keen advocate for women’s suffrage and equal work opportunities. She died in 1904, and a scholarship in her name was founded by her sister at Abadare Hall for women in Cardiff. Her work still resonates today, with its stress on healthy eating, good childcare, and the need to enjoy and protect the natural world.

One of the first Universities to include professional work placements with every degree, the University offers 2,000 six-week placements for first and second year students every year. From teacher training to video production, glamping and working with West Yorkshire Police - placements have always been a distinctive part of Leeds Trinity's offer; embedded into every degree since the institution's very early days. "Placements are instrumental in developing our students into enterprising, skilled and employmentready graduates", said Mubina Ahmed, Professional Placements Manager at Leeds Trinity. "Our students relish the opportunity to work in a professional setting, and many maintain excellent relationships with their employer after the six week placement." Professional work placements were an innovative part of the first courses offered at Leeds Trinity when it was established as two Catholic teacher training colleges in 1966. This year, the institution celebrates its 50th Anniversary with a host of events throughout 2016-17. For more information, visit www.leedstrinity.ac.uk

The Art of the Twentieth Century Art historian Dr Paul Street is looking forward to delivering another successful course starting in September. "After taking early retirement from the University of Leeds some years ago, I decided to offer art history classes both in Leeds and Harrogate", he told us. "These have proved very successful with a number of students returning year after year. "Last year we studied 19th century art, and this year we will be exploring the fascinating (and sometimes controversial!) area of 20th century art, starting in 1914 and ending up with the socalled Young British Artists like Damien Hirst and Tracy Emin (not so young anymore, of course!). "We will study the big names like Picasso and Warhol, but also those artists who painted in more traditional styles, like Stanley Spencer (don't miss his exhibition at the Hepworth by the way), David Hockney and Edward Hopper will not be forgotten. "We meet in comfortable surroundings and no previous experience is needed. So, if you have always wanted to know more about the art of the last century, this just might be the course for you."

Plumpton Rocks is a Grade 2 listed, manmade lake created in 1760, and surrounded by woodland and wind weathered gritstone pinnacles. Situated between Wetherby and Harrogate, the beauty spot attracted the attention of J.M.W. Turner, who produced two oil paintings of the site, following his first visit to Yorkshire in 1797. Not surprisingly, it also made an ideal location for the society’s landscape and nature photographers. The society’s meetings re-commence on Tuesday 6th September with the

The show tells of the confusion it caused as she looks into the nature of offence, the dangers of politically correct liberalism versus the sinister and terrifying intrusion of ISIS into the lives of young British Asian women, and explores the phenomenon of jihadi brides.

Phoenix Dance Theatre is to stage a major revival of one of the company’s earliest works as part of their 35th anniversary celebration Phoenix @ Home, which will be performed at the Stanley & Audrey Burton Theatre from Wednesday 28th September – Saturday 1st October. horeographed by Edward Lynch, who danced in the original production, ‘Nightlife at the Flamingo’ premiered in Leeds in 1983. Originally set in an American nightclub, the piece integrated popular culture and modern dance performed by five dancers with scenes depicting 1940’s dance hall alongside typical 1980s club dance. The piece took inspiration from African American tap dance team the Nicholas Brothers, as well as identifying with British jazz, soul and reggae cultures. Edward has updated the piece for this anniversary performance. It will feature up to 35 dancers, including current Phoenix Dance Theatre and apprentice dancers, Phoenix Youth Academy members, and former Phoenix Company dancers. “Nightlife at the Flamingo was inspired by the power of rhythm, style and physical expression”, said Edward. “I can’t think of a more fitting piece of Company repertoire to celebrate 35 years of Phoenix. “Phoenix has a long-standing history in promoting the development of young Northern dancers, I’m excited to welcome the next generation of talent to perform alongside the professional company. It is important to recognise that in the ‘80s Phoenix Dance Company changed the

cultural context of British dance and it’s an honour to be reviving this piece for the same transformative company 35 years on. May the Phoenix flame remain alight!” Today, Phoenix Dance Theatre is the UK’s longest standing contemporary dance company outside London. It recently launched an ambitious fundraising campaign ‘Give 35 for 35 Years’ to ensure the company’s longevity, following a series of cuts to its core funding. “In 1989 I was one of the first female dancers to join the Company and it is a privilege to lead the Company in these challenging but artistically vibrant times”, said Artistic Director Sharon Watson. “Recommissioning ‘Nightlife at the Flamingo’ is a nod to the company spirit, and affirms the Company’s place as a agent for change in the arts. It is only right that we recognise just how revolutionary the Phoenix phenomenon is and the ground-breaking work the Company’s early members achieved.”

Charlotte Brontë apparently wrote not one but two great masterpieces – Jane Eyre and Villette. But Villette, for some reason, is far less popular. George Elliot claimed it was a ‘more wonderful book than Jane Eyre’; and Virginia Woolfe was a great fan. ucy Hughes-Hallett in an article in The Telegraph a couple of years ago called it ‘uncompromising and so original’ and said it was ‘ high time it was recognised as the blazing work it is’. Now, West Yorkshire Playhouse has decided to do just that and has commissioned Yorkshire playwright Linda Marshall-Griffiths to reimagine this haunting novel for the stage. “This is an extraordinary novel”, said Linda. “It was written after the deaths of her sisters and brother, Bramwell. She was grieving, and the novel charts her journey back into the land of the living and how you find love. It has an extraordinary, intense inner voice. The central character is single, alone, ignored, but observes everything around her.” Linda sets the play in the future. Remaining true to the novel’s unique insights into longing and loneliness it explores the kind of woman the central character, Lucy Snowe, a brilliant archaeologist who could play a crucial role in finding a cure for a pandemic virus, might be today and in the future. She brings Charlotte’s backstory in as it so obviously affects the mood of the novel – after all, Anne, Emily and Bramwell had all died of tuberculosis within months of each other. She is surrounded by death, grieving and loss. Tormented by her past, she grapples with the promise and possibility of love and the fear of losing it.

As Lucy Hughes-Hallett wrote: ‘There has seldom been a fictional heroine so physically plain and emotionally throttled, who is yet so sensuous, so intelligent and so keenly feeling. There has seldom been a first-person narrative that withheld so much from its readers, and yet communicated such terrible or such intimate emotion.’ Villette is directed by West Yorkshire Playhouse Associate Director Mark Rosenblatt. It is central to the Playhouse’s Brontë Season, which includes a work in progress staging of a brand new musical, ‘Wasted’ and a collaborative digital project ‘Know Your Place’. These première alongside dance performances and panel discussions.

Food & Drink

Situated on the corner of Henshaw Lane and Well Hill, just at the bottom of Ivegate in Yeadon, stands The Moon and Sixpence – a very welcome addition to dining out in the area.

Previously known as The Tarn, the somewhat rundown pub was recently bought by Mike West who has transformed it into a truly stylish restaurant. The interior has been opened up and given an almost stark look – lots of white and pale grey, a feature white brick wall, white rattan furniture, large metal lampshades, slatted window shutters, and languorously turning ceiling fans. The tables are dressed with crisp white linen and stylish glassware. You’d be forgiven for thinking you’d walked into a colonial beach house – there’s a touch of the Caribbean. You can imagine men in white linen suits and sultry looking women sipping on exotic cocktails.

At the back of the restaurant sliding doors lead out onto a raised deck, just perfect for enjoying a cool drink in the shadow of the tall, mature trees that surround the back of the restaurant. But, on to food! We feasted on Chicken Livers in an onion, caper and anchovy creamy sauce on crostini, and King Scallops on a bed of slow cooked leeks with mascarpone to start. This was quickly followed by Pork Belly accompanied by baby carrots, mangetout and caramelised golden beetroot and an interestingly sculpted potato stuffed with black pudding; and Seafood Linguini teeming with mussels, prawns and squid in a tomato sauce. And we rounded the meal off with a lovely cinnamony Bramley Apple Crumble and a tasty Sticky Toffee Pudding. In September you can take advantage of a great new fixed menu that is offering two courses for £12.95 and three for £15.95. It features starters like Terrine with crispy sourdough toast, and Calamari Fritti and courgette with garlic mayonnaise. Mains include slow cooked Beef with Yorkshire Blue cheese dumpling, Salmon and Avocado salad, and Seared Cod Loin on colcannon with Lishman’s chorizo.

September brings a tempting new main menu too, with starters from just £3.95 and main courses priced between £8.95 and £14.95. You’ll find Octopus Carpaccio, Smoked Salmon on buckwheat pancakes with caviar and crème fraiche, and pan fried King Prawns with chilli and garlic butter among the starters. Pork belly in a red pepper, and caper sweet and sour sauce; Slow Cooked Beef with thyme dumpling; Chicken alla Crème Cacciatore; various pasta dishes and a regular Fish of the Day are among the mains. There was also talk of music in the near future, with Jazz on Sundays guaranteed to attract people out to an enjoyable afternoon of good food, wine and music. For further information and to book, visit www.themoonandsixpencerestaurant. co.uk or call 0113 250 5009.

‘Too Good To Go’, a new social enterprise launched by two University of Leeds graduates, is a takeaway service dedicated to cutting the amount of food thrown away by restaurants. It launched its app and website recently with the aim of reducing food waste whilst helping local restaurants and businesses to thrive. The app (available for free download through Apple and Android app stores), acts as a link between eateries with excess food and customers who can place orders to collect at a discounted price. Restaurants, portions and prices are listed on the app. The customer then just orders, presents a receipt at the designated time and restaurant (usually half an hour before end of service) and takes away an eco-friendly

‘Too Good To Go’ biodegradable box filled with the food on offer. “Six hundred thousand tonnes of food is wasted by restaurants each year”, said Co-Founder Chris Wilson. “When you think about the impact of such waste on

the environment, as well as the fact that over one million UK residents received emergency food parcels in 2015, it doesn’t make sense for so much edible produce to be thrown away. “Too Good To Go provides an easy-touse interface through which restaurants and consumers can both benefit. Users have access to delicious food at affordable prices whilst restaurants can make a profit on food they would otherwise throw in the bin.” TGTG has also integrated a ‘Pay-ItForward’ scheme into the app, allowing users to donate meals to those in need for as little as £1. This is already proving very popular. Twenty restaurants have already signed up. For further information, visit www. toogoodtogo.co.uk

Adel & Wharfedale Ward Safer Leeds Plan 2016/17 Priorities for Safer Leeds this year are AntiSocial Behaviour, Domestic Violence and Abuse, Hate Crime, serious acquisitive crime and vulnerable victims. Drugs, alcohol and mental health cut across all of these topics. The improvement of road safety and safer travel are also of concern and have been raised with councillors. Safer Leeds has pledged to work closely with the Council’s Highways Service in this respect.

There will be three major approaches to delivering on these priorities – ‘Intelligence Led’ which means analysing information; ‘Restorative Practice’ focusing on positive relationships with members of the community and getting people to take responsibility for their own behaviour; ‘Outcome Based Accountability’, which means taking action to improve outcomes for individuals, communities and organisations. The aim is that people will be safe in their homes and on the streets. Progress will be measured by offending rates, public satisfaction and confidence, and core city comparisons as well as a range of things such as the number of shop theft offences, public perceptions of anti-social behavior etc.

– the need to improve the ease of use of public transport; the need to deliver significant public transport investment in Leeds in the short term; the need to gain a consensus on the city’s medium to long term plans. The Council has until Autumn 2016 to submit an outline strategic case to government for £173m funding. Further engagement events will be arranged including via digital and social media. This will also link in to planned activity by other partners e.g. Leeds Bradford airport.

Future of Transport In Leeds In June the Council held a Transport Summit. Over 170 people attended representing businesses, residents and organisations. Three themes emerged

Weetwood Ward

I am sure many of you have seen the ‘For Sale’ sign on the site of the former West Park Centre on Spen Lane. The West Park Centre was a busy hive of community groups and support services, home to meetings as diverse as local orchestras to talking newspapers for the blind. It was in need of repair and refurbishment but rather than investing money in this community asset the Council decided to demolish it. The community groups scattered or just ceased to exist. I have long said that there was a distinct lack of community facilities in Weetwood. From housing offices to community hubs, and from places for residents to meet to libraries,

We might need houses, but maybe our community needs a home too

Weetwood is sorely lacking. We are lucky that local charity OPAL (Older People’s Action in the Locality) has taken up the mantle and is establishing a community centre of its own in the old Bedford Arms pub on Silk Mill Drive. I have asked the Council to work with the group to locate council services within the building, giving local residents access to housing and benefits advice and social services information. Residents who need to access these services are currently forced to take several buses to other areas in the city, a situation that is unfair, time consuming and expensive. Meanwhile, offers for the West Park Centre site closed at the end of July and local betting is that it will be a housing development. We might need houses, but maybe our community needs a home too.

Homeshare is a really simple idea. The scheme matches younger people looking for an affordable place to live with an older person with a spare room who needs a helping hand at home. The Homesharer commits to giving around ten hours a week support with daily tasks – those things that start to get difficult as you get older, like shopping, cooking and cleaning, pet care and gardening. omeshare is a way to help older people remain independent for longer. There are over 38,000 people in Leeds aged over 60 and living alone. Whilst many are living happy and connected lives Age UK reports that 17% have infrequent contact with family, friends and neighbours. Homeshare offers a solution, providing companionship and the security of having someone else in the house overnight and enabling them to stay comfortably in their own home. Homeshare can offer an ideal solution for students, weekday commuters, or those looking for a home away from home. It could also be the answer for those looking for a period of affordable settled accommodation while they get back on their feet, perhaps after a relationship breakdown. ‘’We have put a lot of thought into making Homeshare a safe and supported scheme”, said Cath Ormerod, Leeds Homeshare Co–ordiator. “In addition to application checks, including DBS, references and credit checks, we carry out a thorough assessment and offer ongoing support.”

Homeshare has been running successfully across the world since the 1970s from the US to Australia and there are loads of great European schemes, as well as Homeshare schemes in communities in the UK. Leeds is one of six National Pilots and another way the city is working to ‘Make Leeds a Great City to Grow Old In’.’’ For further information, visit www. sharedlivesplus.org.uk/about-sharedlives-plus/home-share, call 0113 3785410 or email: homeshare@leeds.gov.uk. Kit4Kidz2 Adultz Exhibition at Elland Road The biggest ever Kit4Kidz2Adultz Exhibition will take place on Wednesday 5th October, 10am – 3pm at the Centenary Pavilion, Leeds United Football Club, Elland Road, and is free to attend. Organised by The William Merritt Disabled Living Centre, the event will showcase new and innovative assistive technology, and provide information and advice to enable children and adults with disabilities or additional needs to lead more independent lives. As well as companies demonstrating a range of assistive technology, including beds, seating, walking and bathing aids, tricycles, scooters, wheelchairs, and car adaptations, a number of charities will be there offering support, advice and information. This is a great opportunity to meet companies and try products which can enhance your everyday life and promote independence. “Each year visitors ask us to arrange for more companies to come so they can find out about the latest products available”, said Annette Abbott, Senior Occupational Therapist. “So this year we have included kit for adults as well. We have had a great response from companies wanting to come and meet professionals who recommend products as well as end users and their families. Not only do they get to meet their customers, but get their valuable feedback too. This will be the biggest event of it’s type in Yorkshire.” To register for this free event, please visit www.wmdlc.org

Headingley Farmers’ Market is Ten Years Old! Headingley Farmers’ Market was set up in September 2006 with three clear aims: to provide the community with a range of high quality, locally produced food; to support local Yorkshire producers and to provide a focus for the regeneration of Headingley, which had lost its range of shops and independent traders. Set up with just nine or ten stalls, today it has well over twenty, providing a wide range of food and plants. n Saturday 10th September the market celebrates its tenth anniversary with a visit from the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor Gerald Harper, and Lady Mayoress, and that evening shoppers and friends are invited to a party at HEART, with all money raised going to PAFRAS (Positive Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers). “We aim to ensure that shoppers can buy nearly all their food at the Farmers’ Market”, said a Headingley Development Trust (HDT) spokesperson. “We have about 20 regular core producers: organic meat, fish, cheese, bread, eggs, cakes,

vegetables, pies, preserves, olive oil etc. Another five or so are occasional or seasonal: strawberries, asparagus, rhubarb, chocolate etc. It means that customers have a rich shopping experience. They get to shop with the seasons and there is a good variety at every market.” HDT has also kept true to its core aim of supporting local producers: most come from within 30 miles of Headingley, with just a couple of exceptions – like fish from Whitby and Lincolnshire Poacher Cheese. It is this commitment to the tenets of bona fide farmers’ markets that won the market accreditation from FARMA. It also won the FARMA Community Spirit Award in

Or m sa po va 2011, and in 2012 it was Yorkshire Farmers’ Market of the Year. About 1,200 people come to the market each month to shop and enjoy the convivial atmosphere that is regularly enhanced by live music – from flute players and folk singers, to Lawnswood Community Choir and jazz from King and I (who will be playing at the anniversary market). Of course, the market wouldn’t happen without the volunteer organising group within HDT, the market manager, Ahmet Un, and his team of young people, who erect and dismantle the stalls each month. Headingley Farmers’ Market is on Saturday 10th September 9am – 12.30pm (and every second Saturday) on the Rose Garden, North Lane, LS6 3JJ. The tenth anniversary party is at HEART, Bennett Rd, LS6 3HN from 7.30pm with a bar and dancing to Alex Graham and the Concords. Tickets £7/ £5.

e have three b r e e d i n g woodpecker species in the UK. The one you are most likely to see – often in gardens – is the great spotted woodpecker, whilst the lesser spotted is a much rarer and smaller bird, also with black, white and red plumage. The green woodpecker is the largest and looks very different from both of these – it has greygreen upperparts, a red crown and a bright yellow rump (best seen in flight). Its habits are very different too – it feeds mainly on ants and is more likely to be seen hopping

about on lawns and other areas of grass, probing the ground for prey rather than in trees. It has a long, sticky tongue which it uses to extract the ants, whether as eggs, larvae or adults, from their nest chambers.

ork Gate Garden on Back Church Lane in Adel, once a private home, features thirteen garden rooms with arts and crafts features. Now owned horticultural charity Perennial, it is maintained by a small staff and a number of dedicated volunteers. Thanks to funding from the National Heritage Lottery Fund, York Gate is currently researching the garden’s history, and aims to interpret the findings and create a permanent exhibition. Volunteers are needed to complete this project, to collate and archive information, research historical records, gather and record oral history, and to create and mount the display. “This award is a tremendous help in realising our long term ambition to preserve this wonderful garden, involving

The seasons are changing but this can be a mild and sunny month with plenty of colour to enjoy in the garden. Ideas for late colour A lot of people tell me that their gardens are disappointing at this time of year as flowers have finished and everything looks tired. Feeding, watering and deadheading plants helps them to stay fresh and blooming for the whole Summer but it may just be that you need to add some late flowering beauties to your beds. It has to be said that the daisy reigns supreme for Autumn flowers, and the colour scheme that comes to mind is one of rich reds, oranges and yellows, but there are plenty of delicate pinks and whites around too with the mauves of Asters really starting to make an impact.

Asters of all kinds ensure that Summer colour goes on

Asters of all kinds ensure that Summer colour goes on – there is even a delicate white one called Aster divaricatus that grows in the shade.

Something for the front of the border? Colchicum (or Autumn Crocus) look similar to its Spring flowering cousins but the leaves are not visible at flowering time. Or, have a look at some of the Autumn flowering Saxifrages such as ‘Wada’ with its delicate little white sprays held above shiny foliage.

Help shrubs to make more flowers! Many of our popular Spring flowering shrubs and trees are already starting to make buds for next year’s floral display. Rhododendrons, Azaleas and Camellias for example fall into this category and in order to produce plenty of nice fat buds, they must not be allowed to dry out, so make sure that they are given plenty to drink in dry spells.

Photo: Ocean Film Festival World Tour

Ocean Film Festival World Tour nce again we are going to be able to immerse ourselves in the wonders of the ocean without getting our feet wet, as the Ocean Film Festival World Tour returns to Leeds Town Hall on Thursday 29th September. The programme will feature a new selection of the world’s most enthralling ocean-themed short films, showcasing over two hours of sublime footage taken above and below the water’s surface. It captures the raw power and beauty of the ocean, whilst celebrating the surfers, kayakers and oceanographers who live for the sea’s spray; chase the crests of waves; and marvel at the mysteries of the big blue.

Inspiring and thought provoking, the festival is filled with incredible cinematography, touching interviews and insightful narrations that will captivate and mesmerise. Each film also conveys a deep respect and appreciation for the world’s oceans and the creatures that call them home. Highlights include ‘Kayaking the Aleutians’, one of the greatest sea kayak expedition in the world. British explorers Justine Curgenven and Sarah Outen set out to paddle 2,500km along the Aleutian chain of islands in Alaska. Alone for 101 days and at the mercy of one of the windiest, roughest places on earth, they are swept away from land by unknown currents, pounded by rough seas and approached by bears. Being a surfer in Iceland is a unique experience. ‘The Accord’ follows Hei.ar Logi Elíasson on his journey through Iceland’s breathtaking, harsh and unforgiving landscape, depicting the turbulent relationship between the tiny surfing community and the North Atlantic wind.

FILM

REVIEW

JASON BOURNE DIRECTED BY: : PAUL GREENGRASS STARRING: MATT DAMON, ALICIA VIKANDER, TOMMY LEE JONES, VINCENT CASSEL, RIZ AHMED

CERT: 12A RUNNING TIME: 123 MINS e’s back! It’s a welcome return for everyone’s favorite amnesiac, globetrotting, ass-kicking super soldier nearly a decade after Matt Damon’s last outing in the role, when he and director Paul Greengrass tied up an excellent trilogy with the superb Bourne Ultimatum. That could well have been the final word on Bourne but the studio execs, thrilled by the positive audience and critical response (but more importantly the impressive box office receipts) weren’t prepared to let that gravy train stop rolling and figured they could continue without the director and star who had made the previous films so successful. And so we got the disappointing ‘The Bourne Legacy’ starring Jeremy Renner, which begged the question “how about a Bourne movie without Bourne in it?” to which our response was a resounding “eh? … Nah”. With Damon and Greengrass back on board we’re back in competent hands; these guys know what they’re doing and I’m pleased to say they’re still really good at it. Fans of the Bourne series will know what they’re in for – a whistle-stop tour of international locations, high-tech espionage, high-octane car-chase action

Jason Bourne maintains the paranoiainducing themes of pervasive surveillance culture established in the previous chapters

and some bone-crunching, up close and personal hand to hand combat. In the previous films the chief character and narrative hook was Bourne’s lack of memory and his quest to track down his former CIA handlers, uncover the secrets of his past and reclaim his identity. As these ends were achieved with the big reveal at the end of Ultimatum, Jason Bourne begins with the titular protagonist stating definitively that he remembers everything and knows who he is. Therefore, the amnesia that served as both Bourne’s motivation and was his Achilles heel has been replaced by, for want of a better term, ‘daddy issues’. While doing some illicit digging into the files pertaining to the black ops program that spawned Bourne and his ilk, his old CIA ally Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) has turned up some troubling info regarding Bourne’s late father and this draws him back into the fray. In the intervening years since the events of Ultimatum, it seems Bourne hasn’t exactly been thriving; we first come across him eking out a living

on the bareknuckle boxing circuit on the Greek – Macedonian border. We are swiftly reassured that his proficiency for knocking seven bells out of thugs and heavies has waned not one iota. Reuniting with Parsons causes Bourne to show up on the CIA radar and then, naturally, be pursued by a new bunch of agency spooks; there’s grizzled Director Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones) who wants Bourne taken out, and steely Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander) who thinks she can bring him in, convinced that his inability to function or exist outside of ‘the program’ makes him susceptible to coercion. A plot thread concerning Aaron Kalloor (the brilliant Riz Ahmed), a social media mogul in the Zuckerberg mould, who is having misgivings about his Faustian dealings with the CIA, is also thrown into the mix. This ties in with the paranoia-inducing themes of pervasive surveillance culture established in the series’ previous chapters and, along with references to Snowden and Wikileaks, plus a thrilling chase sequence set amid the Athens riots, shows the Bourne films to be smart, contempory action cinema that can wrestle a bad guy into a chokehold with one hand while keeping the other firmly on the zeitgeist.

Dudley Nesbitt’s Journey Through Calypso

Tubular Bells is Shown Some Brass Tubular Brass, a specially formed 28-piece brass band made up of some of the UK’s leading players, will perform Mike Oldfield’s pioneering sonic masterpiece ‘Tubular Bells’ at the Howard Assembly Room on Saturday 24th September. ecorded when Oldfield was just 19, Tubular Bells stayed in the UK charts for 273 weeks following its release in 1973. Its combination o f u n u s u a l o rc h e st ra t i o n , sophisticated arrangements and memorable melodies redrew the boundaries of popular music. The brainchild of Sandy Smith, conductor, composer and former principal horn with Black Dyke Band, Tubular Brass offers an inspired, new take on Oldfield’s classic work. “It’s a piece that I grew up with as a teenager in the 70s, and I’d always wanted to

arrange it for brass”, said Sandy Smith. “It’s the biggest project I’ve ever undertaken, and it takes a special band to put it all together.” To open the evening, Tubular Brass will play ‘Mary Casio’, a specially commissioned new piece for brass band and vintage synthesisers by composer, experimental electronic artist and member of The Magnetic North, Hannah Peel. Influenced by electronic pioneers Daphne Oram and Delia Derbyshire, Peel’s composition combines the power and rich tonal quality of traditional brass bands with the uplifting arpeggios and unearthly sound textures of analogue synthesisers.

Born in Trinidad in 1946, Dudley started playing steel pan at the age of eight. By 18 he was living in Port-of-Spain and playing with Trinidad’s top Calypso band ‘The Invaders’, and started teaching soon after. He was the first person to play solo Cello Pan at the International Music Festival in Grenada.

In 1980 he was invited by the Leeds West Indian Carnival committee to teach in Leeds, and then moved here permanently to teach and play his beloved Calypso. Since then Dudley hasn’t stopped teaching. He was a part time lecturer at Leeds College of music for nine years, and taught with the Music Support Centre for over 20 years, introducing hundreds of Primary School children to the joy of Pan. Dudley took to the stage as part of the unforgettable ‘Carnival Messiah’ where his arrangements of ‘The Hallelujah Chorus’ featured steel pan band with him taking the solo. The show was performed twice at West Yorkshire Playhouse, Harewood House, and at a triumphant return to Trinidad as part of Carnival Week. Today Dudley is still teaching and playing. With an innovative fusion of Calypso, jazz and Latin roots, his band ‘Pan Jumby’ attracts sell out crowds wherever it plays. On Friday 16th September, Dudley will take people on his journey through Calypso at Seven Arts, Chapel Allerton.

n February, Class 2BW at St Margaret’s School, Horsforth, decided to take part in an outdoor learning project, aimed at encouraging children to grow vegetables. The competition was open to primary schools across Yorkshire and the Humber, run by the National Farmers’ Union and Yorkshire Agricultural Society. The children had to choose a theme for the vegetable box, decide which vegetables should be grown, and design the layout of the planting. They also had to complete a diary showing the progress and bio-diversity of the project. Year 2BW, led by Mrs Diane Chamberlain, chose to plant a Medieval Castle Garden, as they were learning about Medieval times. They found out which vegetables were grown then, planted seeds, took cuttings, and looked after the plants, watering them with a Medieval

‘Thumb Pot’. They made the box into a castle, using willow-weave fences to divide the growing sections, and created ‘knight’ scarecrows and ‘shield’ plant labels. The culmination of four months work was to be chosen as finalists for the Great Yorkshire Show! Mrs Chamberlain and Mrs Lawson took some of the children to see their entries on display and being judged. Everyone was thrilled to be presented with awards for 5th place for the vegetable box and first place for the diary!

CREATIVE COURAGE FOR LIFE WITH STAGECOACH Stagecoach Performing Arts in Horsforth offer classes in singing, dancing and acting at Ralph Thoresby School and are offering a two week trial during the Autumn term for youngsters aged four to 18. Performance at Stagecoach is about more than learning how to sing, dance and act. Students develop the creative courage to unlock their potential, to stand up and be heard, to work with other students and to embrace new ideas and possibilities. As they hone their skills and work together to devise new performances, they become more self-assured, expressive, sociable and imaginative - all skills that will serve them well in life and help them to tackle new situations with resilience, creativity and courage. Classes are small, which means every child is given attention and allowed to realise their potential at their own pace. The teachers all have performing arts experience and are there to lead and support youngsters as they conquer fears and rise to new challenges. Classes run during school term time on Saturday mornings or afternoons. To find out more about the two week trial, call Ken Davison on 01757 248884 or visit www.stagecoach.co.uk/leedshorsforth

FANCY PLAYING THE FRENCH HORN OR BASSOON?

SMS Target is a new music education project, run by Leeds College of Music (LCoM), to encourage children to learn to play an instrument.

There is currently a shortage of musicians playing these instruments. By raising the profile of these instruments, SMS Target aims to create a new generation of musicians to perform in bands and orchestras.

In partnership with ArtForms (Leeds City Council) and the Leeds Music Education Partnership, LCoM will provide lessons for children aged 9 -12 who want to play selected instruments from the woodwind, brass, and string families – especially instruments that aren’t commonly available in schools, such as oboe, bassoon, French horn, trombone, tuba, viola, cello, and double bass.

“Though young people may hear the sound of French horns or cellos in film music, they may never consider playing them because they rarely see them played”, says Karen Gourlay, Head of Saturday Music School, which runs each Saturday during term time. “Cost is another barrier, but through SMS Target the instruments can be borrowed by students from Leeds, free of charge, as part of the project.” Students will have group lessons, play in an orchestra, and take part in fun music workshops to develop even more musical skills.

Leeds College of Music is holding an SMS Target Open Day on Saturday 10th September at 2pm. The course starts on 17th September. Fees for students attending a state school or academy in Leeds are £200 a year payable in instalments (includes free loan of an instrument). Discretionary bursaries are available. For further information, contact 0113 222 3449, SMS@lcm.ac.uk, or visit www. lcm.ac.uk/youngmusicians

SATURDAY MUSIC SCHOOL OPEN DAY SATURDAY 10 SEPTEMBER, 2:00PM Are you aged 9–12 years old? Do you want to play an amazing instrument? Come and learn more at the SMS Target Open Day!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Adel, Bramhope, Cookridge, Horsforth, Headingley, Meanwood, Weetwood & West Park areas and Joel is finding

that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve

done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
