DEAR READERS,

We seem to have been catapulted into February!

This month local councillors flag up inconsiderate parking outside schools and how local communities can really make a difference in their area. Time to Shine is recruiting members to help make Leeds a better place in which to grow old; and Irish Arts Foundation is starting a Reminiscence and Cultural Activities Men’s Group at The Reginald Centre. In the Arts things never seem to slow down! There’s a new exhibition at Leeds City Museum celebrating the seasons; Northern Broadsides brings Cyrano de Bergerac to The Playhouse; La Cage Aux Folles comes to Leeds Grand; and there is plenty to look forward to in dance and music.

manda Owen has been seen on ITV’s ‘The Dales’, and on Ben Fogle’s ‘New Lives in the Wild’ living a life that has almost disappeared in today’s world, a life ruled by the seasons and her animals. She and her husband Clive farm a 2,000 acre hill farm at Ravenseat, above Keld at the head of Swaledale in North Yorkshire. Together with their nine children, it’s a challenging life. She is also an author. In ‘The Yorkshire Shepherdess’ she describes how the rebellious girl from Huddersfield, who always wanted to be a shepherdess, achieved her dreams. Full of amusing anecdotes and unforgettable characters, the book

takes us from fitting in with the locals to adapting to motherhood, from the demands of the livestock to raising a large family in such a rural backwater. Amanda tells of the peace of winter, when they can be cut off by snow without electricity or running water, the happiness of spring and the lambing season, and the backbreaking tasks of summertime - haymaking and sheep shearing. JULIUS CAESAR IBBETSON (1759-1817) ARTIST

Julius Caesar Ibbetson‘s life began in tragedy, with the death of his mother and his birth by Caesarean section – hence his extraordinary name. His life was restless and difficult. At times he prospered, with distinguished patrons, but he also suffered debt, loss and illness before he finally found a haven back in Yorkshire. His paintings are in galleries all over the country, with a large collection here at Temple Newsam House. Most are landscape studies, often quite small, but enriched with colourful, lively images of the everyday life of the time, of ordinary people at work, at play, at home, vivid insights into the society of his day. e was born at Farnley Moor Top in Leeds in 1759, perhaps in one of the small row of cottages which still survive there. His father Richard Ibbetson, after a period in London, had lived for many years in the Moravian settlement at Fulneck, but had to leave when he married an ‘outsider’, the daughter of a local farmer called Julius Mortimer. His young wife Rebecca, pregnant with their second child, died in an accident and so Julius was born by surgery. He was educated partly at Fulneck and then at the highly regarded Quaker school in Leeds, but at age 12, knowing his artistic interests, his father apprenticed him to a ship painter at Hull – not a marine artist as he perhaps imagined, but a painter of ships’ hulls! Young Julius made the best of it, and got a name for his fine decorative work, even painting scenery for the local theatre run by the famous Tate Wilkinson, who became his friend. When his master sold the business and would have sold Julius with it, he rebelled and escaped on the stage coach to London, just 17, friendless and virtually penniless. He found work in a picture dealer’s workshop where over the next years, although overworked and underpaid, he learnt valuable skills and could study painting, especially the Dutch masters. His fine work began to be recognised and in 1785 his first picture was accepted by the Royal Academy. From then on he exhibited regularly, and very successfully – in 1790 pronounced the ‘genius of the year’ for his rich romantic landscapes. A large, humorous, sociable man, he was popular with a network of influential friends and patrons. In 1787 he was offered the chance of a lifetime, to accompany the first ever British Mission to the Chinese Imperial Court as official artist. But six months into the long, arduous sea voyage the British envoy died and the ship had to turn back. Julius lost a

year and money on this abortive venture. With help from his generous patrons, over the next years he enjoyed stays in various country houses, and the opportunity to tour and paint in the Isle of Wight and in Wales, the subject of many of his finest pictures. A further blow awaited. He had married his wife Elizabeth in 1780 and year by year their family increased, but only three of their eleven children survived. In 1794 Elizabeth died too, leaving him totally desolate. He had a breakdown, and lost all his money and his home. Although some useful commissions helped to support him – book illustrations, interior decoration

at Kenwood House at Hampstead – he remained in deep financial trouble. He embarked on further travels, touring Scotland, the Lakes, Yorkshire, always painting, desperate for money, disabled with severe rheumatism. Cheated in his scheme for a regular income by a Liverpool dealer (he viewed all dealers as ‘serpents’), he was rescued by a wealthy patron. In 1799 he found a home in the Lakes, first at Ambleside and then Troutbeck. He also found a new wife, a local girl, Bella Thompson, only 17. She was his ‘assistant, companion, nurse’, supported him through his continuing money problems, and became indispensable to his happiness. Always convivial and popular, tempted by the local hostelries, he settled down. Encouraged by one of his patrons, he wrote a guide to ‘Painting in Oil’ for beginners, published in 1803, explaining the techniques he used himself – the first manual of its kind. A commission from William Danby of Swinton Hall brought the family finally to Masham, where they lived from 1805. It was a simple but contented existence. He painted some delightful local scenes, including a touching domestic picture of his own family circle, surrounded by children and pets. These often featured in his work – he had a sympathetic eye for the life around him, including beggars, gypsies, country folk and their animals. He died in 1817, aged 58, ‘his extraordinary genius as a painter universally acknowledged’.

Headingley is currently experiencing a shortage of rental property as the area transforms itself from a student enclave into one of the UK’s best performing areas for property investors, according to professional

Pictured: Jonathan Morgan

lettings specialist Morgans. “There is a major shortage of properties available for rent at the moment and there are no signs of that changing anytime soon”, said Jonathan Morgan, Managing Director. “We manage one of the largest portfolios of property rented to professionals in North Leeds and have the highest ever occupancy rate since setting up in Headingley 20 years ago. “As well as record occupancy levels, we have seen an increase in the amount of time tenants stay at the same property. Typically, the majority of tenants look at what the market has to offer after 8 – 12 months. As supply has shrunk however, there are fewer options available, and 25% more tenants have chosen to stay put this year than during 2016. “I believe that the undersupply could be partially addressed through the conversion of former student properties and HMOs into properties suitable for letting to the professional market. It’s only 20 years since the student tidal wave surged beyond its traditional boundaries, into Becketts Park, through Far Headingley and even into West Park. However, an explosion in the delivery of high quality purpose-built student accommodation blocks in the city centre, has had the effect of almost entirely reversing the trend. “Now, Far Headingley and West Park are almost entirely student-free and Becketts Park is fast returning to owner-

occupation, which it was originally designed for and inevitably better suited to. “We have always dealt solely with professional lets, and are the only agency in Headingley that focuses on this sector, so we have a real understanding of what the professional market is looking for. Over the last year we have seen a significant increase in the number of vacant student properties. Some landlords are reticent to invest in developing them for the professional market, and some have even left them empty in the hope that students will return. “This is a risky strategy, especially in light of sensible investment almost certainly securing a professional tenant and a great return. This is reinforced by the fact that Headingley has just been named as the UK’s top rental hotspot in terms of yields by comparison site TotallyMoney, which revealed that investors buying property in the LS6 postcode, can achieve rental yields of up to 10.79%, compared to the national average of 3.3%. “As a result, we are encouraging property investors who own student

accommodation, or those wanting to expand their buy to let portfolios, to buy in Headingley and provide more homes for rent – as the demand is certainly there.”“Headingley is also adapting to reflect these changes. Symbolic of Headingley’s identity crisis is the fact that it took around ten years for both Pizza Express and Nandos to find a footing, due mainly to local opposition. It is to Headingley’s detriment that it shunned these archetypally family brands for so long. “At long last, it appears that the continued, and apparently permanent, migration of a large proportion of the student population southwards is spawning a whole new generation of bars and restaurants such as White’s Deli, The Cat’s Pyjamas, Red’s True BBQ, Sebby’s Deli and Head of Steam, who join an array of local stalwarts. “Headingley, which has often been second-choice for many young professionals behind Chapel Allerton, is re-emerging as a popular place for first time renters. We believe that this trend will continue and that Headingley will once again become the place to be in North Leeds.” Morgans (opposite The Arndale Centre, Otley Road) manages a wide selection of homes – from one bedroom apartments to large family homes – ranging from £500 to £1,500 per calendar month. I hope that, between Adam and I, we can do justice to the next chapter in the story of The Leeds International Piano Competition nternational concert pianist Paul Lewis will play a varied programme of Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Weber at Leeds Town Hall on Friday 17th February, with all proceeds going towards the Leeds International Piano Competition.

Paul became joint artistic director of the prestigious competition in 2015, following the retirement of Dame Fanny Waterman. He and his fellow artistic director, Adam Gatehouse, have reimagined ‘The Leeds’ for the next generation of leading pianists. The next Competition (2018) will see the entire event broadcast live online – bringing ‘The Leeds’ to a global audience of millions. The first round will take place in three international centres for culture – New York, Berlin, and Singapore – before the best 24 pianists come to Leeds in September 2018 for the final rounds. “The Leeds International Piano Competition has long been an integral and significant part of the musical awareness of any young pianist”, said Paul. “Dame Fanny’s astonishing achievement over more than half a century stands as one of the great landmarks of the music world, and it is an enormous privilege to have the chance to

play a part in its future. I hope that, between Adam and I, we can do justice to the next chapter in the story of this prestigious event, and I look forward with huge excitement to the years ahead.” Paul is in demand across the world as a pianist and chamber musician. His numerous awards include two Edison, three Gramophone, and the South Bank Show Classical Music Award. In 2016 he was made a CBE for his services to music. His 2016/17 engagements include performances with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de Paris and Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and he is regularly featured on the BBC Proms. Northern Broadsides and New Vic Theatre present an exciting new adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac by award-winning playwright Deborah McAndrew at West Yorkshire Playhouse from 28th February – 4th March.

Poetry and prose combine in this funny, romantic and heartbreaking adaptation

Pictured: Adam Barlow in rehearsals

irected by Northern Broadsides’ Conrad Nelson, this new adaptation brings fresh vigour to this tale of unrequited love. Add to this Broadsides’ musical panache, acclaimed charisma and exuberant performance style and you have an evening of pure drama that will lift your spirits and make your heart ache. “The adaptation embraces the poeticism of Rostand’s drama, but does not confine itself to the regular rhyming couplets of the original”, said Conrad Nelson. “Poetry and prose combine in this funny, romantic and heartbreaking adaptation. Debbie McAndrew has created a carefully crafted version that marries the energy and vibrancy of youth with the romance and classicism of the original. Broadsides are committed to producing high quality adaptations and new writing for the stage. This is an ideal combination of a classic play and a contemporary adaptation.” Playing the title role will be Christian Edwards who recently played Grantaire in the West End production of ‘Les Miserables’. He will be joined by Paul Barnhill (Brassed Off, Steven Spielberg’s The BFG); Angela Bain, Adam Barlow, Andy Cryer, Jessica Dyas, Francesca Mills, Michael Hugo, Anthony Hunt, Perry Moore, Robert Wade, Andrew Whitehead, and newcomer Sharon Singh as Roxane. Cyrano will be the first production of Northern Broadsides 25th anniversary year. The company will be joining forces with Hull Truck Theatre, as part of Hull 2017, for a revival of ‘Richard III’, its original production in 1992. Tickets (£13.50 – £30) are available from 0113 213 7700 or online at wyp.org.uk

Northern Ballet’s ‘Goldilocks’ Thrills Nightingale Primary orthern Ballet recently brought ballet to Harehills with three performances of its new children’s ballet, ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’, at Nightingale Primary Academy. The company’s community performances engage with children and families who wouldn’t usually see ballet in the traditional theatre setting and are designed to develop awareness and improve access to ballet in ethnically diverse communities.

Short Ballets for Small People encourage children to get involved in dance

The production was seen by over 400 people. Nightingale Academy pupils also enjoyed creative movement workshops that explored the story and themes of the show, giving them an introduction to ballet and a greater understanding of the balllet. Northern Ballet has been performing its Short Ballets for Small People at community venues since 2012. Set in familiar, more relaxed environments, and with low cost tickets, they not only introduce ballet to families but also aim to encourage more children to get involved in dance. Since the project began, over 3,500 people from the city’s most socioeconomically deprived areas have attended a performance. John Partridge’s extensive theatre credits include West End productions of A Chorus Line, Cats, Starlight Express, and he recently played Billy Flynn in Chicago at Leeds Grand. He is also well known for playing Christian Clarke in EastEnders. Adrian Zmed co-starred with William Shatner in the hit TV show T.J. Hooker, and he was Johnny Nogerelli in Grease 2. He is no stranger to Broadway musicals, having previously led the casts of Grease, no fewer than three times, Falsettos and Blood Brothers. Marti Webb is one of the West End’s most revered leading ladies. In Le Cage Aux Folles she plays Jacqueline, friend and owner of the restaurant Chez Jacqueline. s many as two million sole traders and small companies missed out on £1.5bn of Cyber Weekend online sales, according to the Department of Business, Innovation & Skills. As a result, Ideas (Nettl of Leeds) are offering £50,000 of web development grants to local SMEs to help them get online. Ideas, who recently moved to Chapel Allerton, is supporting small businesses with a free one hour consultation for businesses in Leeds and up to a £500 grant towards a Nettl website. Many UK small and medium sized businesses totally missed out on cyber spending of £500,000 per minute last December, due to their lack of online presence.

According to research by the DBI&S, more than half of customers (55%) say they find it hard to support local businesses when they simply can’t find them online. “Our clients tell us they know they need to sell online or simply have a presence, but find it difficult knowing where to start. They hear about how expensive web development is and worry they’ll get ripped off. It’s Nettl’s mission to remove the mystery surrounding websites and help small businesses,” said Peter Gunning, CEO of Nettl. “To show our support for SMEs, we’re offering local businesses who sign up for a no obligation consultation, up to £500 grant towards the cost of their website.”

“We love meeting clients, listening to their plans and helping turn them into reality” said Dally Purewal, Director of Ideas (Nettl of Leeds). NLL Leads Writer to New Publisher A couple of years ago North Leeds Life included a little article about Armley Press and its search for new writers. Author Andrew Kirby had been hunting for a home for his new, Leeds-based crime novel ‘The Lost Boys of Prometheus City’ and decided to submit the novel for their perusal. Mick McCann and John Lake, the guys behind Armley Press, liked what they saw, and Andrew, who lives in Roundhay, liked the cut of their jib. The novel is now alive and kicking, having been released on Christmas Day 2016! Both Andrew and Armley Press are hoping the book will appeal to readers who love twists and turns in their fiction; who like their characters flawed but determined to be better; who want to be immersed in location and taken on a journey. In ‘The Lost Boys of Prometheus City’ Neal Grace, Carl Sharp, and Adam Warshawski are A-list. They’re young, handsome, and rich. They go to all the best parties. Women want to bed them; men want their phone numbers. They are the face of brash, post-millennium Leeds, a city which is itself on its uppers. But one false move is all it takes for these three ‘young princes’ of Leeds to tumble off their pedestal. After they instigate an incident of shocking violence against two definite Z-listers, life spins into a terrifying downward spiral. AJ Kirby has lived in Leeds longer than he has lived anywhere else. The city got its hooks into him when he studied English at university here, and he’s been unable to escape ever since. ‘The Lost Boys of Prometheus City’ is his tenth novel.

eeds Festival Chorus will perform Haydn’s ‘Creation’ on 4th March, 7.30pm at Leeds Town Hall, in an independent concert, not part of the Leeds International Concert Season. Haydn’s oratorio depicting the Creation according to the Old Testament, one of the great peaks of the choral repertoire, is often considered to be his masterpiece. Mozart said Haydn could do it all – and he did. He composed it after his visits to Mozart said: “Haydn alone has the secret England, where he was inspired by great both of making me smile and of touching performances of his oratorios. Chloe Tear Nominated for National Young Citizen Award Chloe Tear, a Leeds Trinity student from Otley, has been nominated for the 2017 Rotary Young Citizen Award for her work to raise awareness of Cerebral Palsy, through her blog ‘Life as a Cerebral Palsy Student’. “I write a blog and help to run a charity because it is something I love to do”, said Chloe. “It is an unbelievable feeling to be nominated for a national award, and it gives me so much motivation to carry on doing what I am doing.” Chloe began writing her blog three years ago whilst at Prince Henry’s Grammar School and continued writing during the first year of her Psychology and Child Development degree at Leeds Trinity. She has attracted readers from all over the world. “I had never met anyone who had Cerebral Palsy and was struggling to come to terms with my deteriorating health”, said Chloe. “I thought if I set up a blog it would help me process what was happening, and might find others who were experiencing the same thing. I felt that not many people understood the concept of chronic pain or using a wheelchair and I was still a teenager who wanted to have a good time!” In the last 12 months, Chloe has become Head Ambassador for CP Teens UK, which provides support and friendship to young people with cerebral palsy and their families. She also received a National Diversity Award for being a positive role model and was ‘Highly Commended’ in the ‘Most Inspirational Young Person’ category at the Kids Count Inspiration Awards last month.

Join the Marie Curie Great Daffodil Appeal Every year in March, Marie Curie holds its Great Daffodil Appeal to raise money for people living with a terminal illness. Last year, it raised over £19,000 in Leeds – enough to fund a Marie Curie Nurse for a year.

Chloe has also written for national publications and recently supported American author, Anne Eliot, who was writing two books whose main character had cerebral palsy. View Chloe’s blog at www. cpstudentblog.blogspot.co.uk

This year, Marie Curie will be holding bucket collections across Leeds and urgently needs volunteers to spare a couple of hours to help with these. “We are asking people to support us by donating and wearing a daffodil badge”, said Jen Aspinall, Community Fundraiser. “We urgently need volunteers to help with our collections. It is easy to get involved and lots of fun! We would love to hear from anyone interested.” To sign up, visit www. mariecurie.org.uk or contact Jen on 01274 386190.

New Reminiscence and Cultural Activities Men’s Group A significant number of the Irishmen in these areas have little opportunity to socialise

he Leeds-based Irish Arts Foundation is pleased to announce that, with the support of the All Big Lottery Fund and People’s Health Trust Active Communities Fund, a Reminiscence and Cultural Activities Men’s Group will start in mid-February at The Reginald Centre on Chapeltown Road. “The positive contribution of the many Irishmen who arrived in the city from the West of Ireland between 1955 and 1980 has sometimes been overlooked or forgotten”, said Jim Mulhern, Irish Arts Foundation Project Development Worker. “Since the demise of lesser known, informal Irish venues across parts of the city in favour of road schemes or much needed housing, a

significant number of the Irishmen in these areas have had little opportunity to socialise or reconnect through previously available local activities such as traditional music and song, a game of ‘fives and threes’, or a meet up to recall arriving in the city as young men. “We are offering the opportunity for community and voluntary organisations in the inner south and inner west areas of the city to avail of free taster sessions to encourage Irish men to come along.” The group will meet fortnightly at The Reginald Centre on Chapeltown Road. News From Your Councillors Cllr

DAN COHEN Alwoodley

ast September I wrote pleading with parents to park as considerately as possible when delivering their children to school. Unfortunately since schools have gone back I have had more complaints from upset local residents than ever before. The problem is certainly not limited to any one school. In fact, I have had complaints from residents local to all of the schools in our

ward, but the past month seems to have been particularly challenging. Could I please ask that all parents help by ensuring that they do park considerately when dropping off and picking up from school. I realise that it is a minority of parents who are causing these issues, but if those who park considerately could gently persuade their peers to do the same it would be a great service to the area and would save our head teachers having to spend an inordinate amount of time placating ever more angry neighbours. Local councillors spend significant time trying to improve the area….. to that end, I need your help. Whilst I keep my eyes peeled for litter hot spots, or places where old roadwork signs have been abandoned, or even signs left on lampposts about past events, sometimes I miss them. If you know of any, let me know and I will get them tidied up – together we can make 2017 the year we get rid of Alwoodley’s clutter. Finally, I was asked to draw attention to West Yorkshire Fire and

Rescue Service’s (WYFRS) Winter safety campaign ‘Cherished’, aimed at preventing fire related deaths involving older people across West Yorkshire. The campaign asks people to pledge to check on three older people this Winter (relatives, neighbours or friends). While visiting you might consider whether there are safety issues that need attention – lots of clutter, an easy to use escape route free from trip hazards etc. Concerns can be shared with the Fire Service who can organise a free fire safety check. WYFRS have a video explaining more about the campaign. You can view this and make the pledge at www. facebook.com/westyorkshirefire For all your local concerns and queries, my colleagues

Cllr

REBECCA CHARLWOOD Moortown & Meanwood Ward

eanwood has gone through a significant transformation over the last few years, with the high street in particular seeing a lot a change. New restaurants, cafés and bars, and Waitrose, are all welcoming more people to the area, as well as serving the local community. However whilst we have seen great change, what really define areas such as Meanwood are our local communities, who are the heart of everything we do and who can make a real difference. As local councillors we often work with residents and groups to drive positive change in the areas we represent, and this work highlights the potential strength in partnerships in our communities. We were delighted to support

residents and Meanwood Valley Partnership (MVP) to have the paddock on Church Lane taken out of the site allocations and saved from development. We also worked with MVP to help shape the redevelopment of the Working Men’s Club. Ensuring that children are safe has also been a key priority for us, and we were happy to be instrumental in bringing in the 20mph zone outside schools. The support of parents was crucial to making this happen. A new picnic area is planned for Meanwood Park, and a new children’s playground off Stonegate Road will give families and residents even more options to enjoy. It is clear to see, the key role residents and groups play in our communities and their contribution to transforming local areas like Meanwood is crucial. It shows the strength of communities and the Council working together to make a real difference for the benefit of residents. Long may this partnership continue!

Occasional sunny days in February offer a glimpse of the weather to come, acting as a reminder to start preparing for a wonderful Summer garden. Need for Seed! The new season’s seed catalogues are out and packed with exciting ideas for things to sow. Send for a couple of catalogues and select something really different to grow this year. I love Bupleurum with its long lasting green and coppery bracts that are perfect for flower arrangements, Or, how about a Tree Lupin, or a fast growing tall sunflower such as ‘Soraya’ which has tangerine coloured petals and dark centre. Veg lovers have a plethora of varieties to choose from too, so there is no need to grow anything that you’ll see on a supermarket shelf. I’m going to try Asparagus peas for the first time and some courgettes called ‘Tromboncino d’Albenga’, which are said to grow quickly and produce long tasty fruit that are also ornamental. If you have a bit of space in the greenhouse you could grow your own Capers – on a perennial plant with attractive white flowers sporting delicate purple stamens, or Cape Gooseberries for the delightful little orange fruits. Ordered now, your seed should arrive in time to start sowing next month.

Turning over a new leaf I left the borders without tidying them over Winter as I like the seed heads and plumes of grasses for winter interest and to help wildlife. They look dreadfully untidy now though, so it is time to go round chopping off any old flower stems and dead foliage and cutting back deciduous grasses, ready for the Spring growth to start coming through. Be careful not to damage emerging spring bulbs.

I love Bupleurum with its long lasting green and coppery bracts that are perfect for flower arrangements

Big clumps of perennials can be divided now whilst they are still dormant, as can clumps of very early flowering bulbs like Snowdrops or Winter aconites once the flowers have faded.

Looking After the Edibles Perennial veg such as Artichokes, Asparagus and Cardoons can be mulched now and it’s also time to start forcing Rhubarb (cover it with a pot to encourage it to send up sweet early shoots), and chitting potatoes (put the seed potatoes out on a cool windowsill so that they begin to shoot). Apple and Pear trees can be pruned this month too.

FILM

REVIEW

SILENCE DIRECTED BY: MARTIN SCORSESE STARRING: ANDREW GARFIELD, ADAM DRIVER, LIAM NEESON

CERT: 15 RUNNING TIME: 161 MINS artin Scorsese’s latest joins the likes of his Last Temptation of Christ and Kundun in being an overt exploration of religion and spirituality; themes which, by virtue of his Roman Catholic upbringing, have remained a source of endless fascination for the director throughout his life and career. Here, the story, set in the 1600s, concerns a pair of Portuguese Jesuit priests Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Garrpe (Adam Driver) who, upon hearing that their mentor Ferreira (Liam Neeson), while spreading the gospel in the far east, has become lost to the church and is rumored to have committed apostasy, set out to Japan to track him down and bring him back into the fold. Arriving in Japan Rodrigues and Garrpe discover a hostile environment where the small, beleaguered Christian community faces brutal persecution. While trying to figure out how to make contact with Ferreira the priests perform the sacraments in secret, knowing that their discovery by the Buddhist shogunate authorities, particularly the feared ‘inquisitor’, will result in torture and likely death. Rodrigues’ and Garrpe’s situation becomes more precarious as the inquisitor’s samurai enforcers terrorize the village and so they decide to leave and split up in their search for Ferreira. Shortly thereafter

This is intense, powerful stuff but also unapologetically heavy going

Rodrigues is captured and taken to Nagasaki where his true test of faith begins.

This story, based on a 1966 novel by Shūsaku Endō, is reputedly one Scorsese has been trying to bring to the screen for decades and is clearly a passion project for the director. While his deep personal interest in and relationship with the subject matter has seen him remain committed to realising his vision of the film, it’s unlikely that Silence will become one of his more highly regarded or widely viewed pictures (I was the sole audience member at the screening I attended). And, to be fair, a film concerning 17th century Jesuit priests, apostasy and religious persecution is kind of a hard sell. Silence is intense, powerful stuff but it is also unapologetically heavy going, slow moving, gravely serious and feels at least as long as its nearly two and three quarter hours running time. For those with the patience, though, it is something of a rewarding experience; the cinematography and sound design are extremely evocative, it’s beautifully shot with some haunting imagery and it features a very strong central performance from Andrew Garfield.

Within the framework of this handsomely mounted production Scorsese grapples with big questions regarding the nature of faith and religious devotion, the tenacity and resilience of belief and clashes of cultures over doctrine and dogma. What conclusions we are to draw from these lines of inquiry, however, remain ambiguous, particularly when it comes to the ethics of the missionaries themselves and their proselytizing. Scorsese clearly has admiration and perhaps reverence for those who hold fast to their faith in the face of adversity and dire circumstances and, considering the brutality of the repressive established order, it’s reasonably clear where our sympathies should lie. However, while Rodrigues struggles with his crisis of faith, he continues to refuse to renounce his religion even though he knows that doing so would cease the suffering of others. Are we to see this as a heroic show of his integrity or has he tipped over into mere stubborn pride? There’s a murky morality at play here and Silence, perhaps unwittingly, exposes the arrogance, hypocrisy and cruelty on both sides of this spiritual divide.

Irrepressible, disarming and really quite lovely stand-up comic Josie Long brings her much anticipated new show, Something Better, to The Wardrobe on Tuesday 21st February.

e spoke to Josie recently to ask about the evolution of her new show. When Josie began writing Something Better back in March 2016 she, like all of us, had no idea what kind of tumult and trauma the year still had in store. The show has changed a great deal since its conception and even more so since she’s been workshopping the material – she told us she’d mostly been reacting to things as they happened, then filtering through her comedy. The jumping off point for the new show was Josie thinking and writing about activism – looking into how, in desperate times, one can take direct action to bring about social and political change. With a title promising positivity, Something Better couldn’t be more timely and needed. This is a show about optimism and hopefulness, about looking for people and finding things to look up to. It’s about wanting more from life than it might be up for giving out. It’s about struggling with realising what you are, who you are and what you can’t change about yourself, and about really feeling like an outsider for the first time. It’s a bit about having faith in younger people, and friendship, and activism, and solidarity. She’s been busy interviewing activists about what they do and why, so it’s also about politics and making things happen. And there’s probably a bit where she pretends to be a push-button shower, so it should be silly and fun too, with a few exciting bits! Josie presents Radio 4’s popular short documentary series Short Cuts, which is also one of the top downloaded podcasts today. An Eclectic Programme at Howard Assembly Room The Howard Assembly Room has put together a typically eclectic and enticing programme for the upcoming season. ighlights include Ukrainian pianist Lubomyr Melnyk (24 Feb), who brings his astonishing ‘continuous piano’ technique to Leeds. University of Leeds alumnus and Snarky Puppy founder member Bill Laurance (6 March) comes home with a third solo album Aftersun, a paean to life in the cosmos with African percussion and dance music at its heart. Vocal ensemble Trio Mediaeval (8 March) return, their shimmering sound combining with Arve Henriksen’s hushed trumpet and live electronics in an exploration of the medieval musical exchange between Norway and Iceland. Charismatic pianist and band leader Roberto Fonseca (10 March) presents a new fusion of Latin jazz, hip hop and AfroCuban rhythms. Penguin Café (12 March), assembles ace musicians from the likes of Suede and Gorillaz to combine minimalist compositions with the freeform structures of jazz and Latin, African and American world sounds. And, Leveret (17 March) brings together some of folk’s finest instrumentalists – Sam Sweeney, Bellowhead’s fiddle-player, concertina player Rob Harbron and melodeon and accordion star Andy Cutting.

Performances use hypnotic vocal and instrumental repetition to induce a state of ecstasy. Folk troubadour John Smith (31 March) showcases his skilled guitar work, honey-on-gravel vocals and uniquely intimate approach to song writing. And, Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars (7 April) create their glowing brand of Afro-pop inflected with baskeda (Sierra Leonian reggae) and a jubilant spirit of resistance. Their inspirational live shows radiate love, joy and passion. Courtney Pine featuring Omar (20 April) This special project brings two great jazz and soul talents together to perform original material for the first time, integrating modern British sounds like drum ‘n’ bass with soul, hip-hop and deeply rooted influences from across the Caribbean. AfroCubism Revisited (22 April) explores both the music of the seminal World Music album itself and the influences and roots that fed into it. Music and Cinema

The Howard Assembly Room continues to mash up music and cinema in exciting and innovative ways with its ongoing FILMusic series.

One of the most revered and unorthodox movie musicals of all time bittersweet cinematic treat for Valentine’s Day is The Umbrellas of Cherbourg (£5) with a live musical prelude. Exquisitely designed in a kaleidoscope of colour and told through the lilting songs of the great Michel Legrand, this is one of the most revered and unorthodox movie musicals of all time. On 17th February Xiu Xiu’s Jamie Stewart returns with another David Lynch collaboration. HEXA, his duo with Australian composer and artist Lawrence English,

is an uncompromising sonic response to the legendary director’s dark, atmospheric Factory Photographs, taken amidst the ruins of industry in the USA, Poland, Germany and the UK. Tickets: £10 Icelandic experimentalists múm present the UK premiere of their improvised live score to People on Sunday (Menschen an Sonntag) (3 March) a vivid portrait of pre-war Berlin and its young inhabitants considered a masterpiece of silent film by Directors Billy Wilder, Edgar G. Ulmer, Fred Zinnemann, Robert and Curt Siodmak, Rochus Gliese. Tickets: £15

Paolo Sorrentino’s The Great Beauty (8 April) is a swooning love letter to the decadence of Rome. This extraordinary tragicomedy is a must-see on the big screen. The screening is followed on 13th April by The Great Beauty: A Concert with the string section of the Orchestra of Opera North performing a concert of music inspired by the film’s soundtrack. The programme includes John Tavener’s superlative ‘The Protecting Veil’; Summa, ‘Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten’; ‘Festina Lente’ by Arvo Pärt; and William Byrd’s ‘Fantasia a 6’.

Swim the Channel, Without Leaving Leeds! If you’ve always wanted to swim the English Channel but were put off by the cold, choppy waters, months of training and endless hours in the sea - St Gemma’s sponsored ‘virtual swim’ is the perfect challenge for you!

Opportunities with Arthritis Care Arthritis Care is looking for volunteers in the Leeds area to help to run its ‘Living Well with Arthritis’ project. Information Point Volunteers will help run monthly information points/ drop-ins at venues like outpatient departments, health centres etc. These last approximately two hours, offering people information about arthritis and an opportunity to talk about their condition with someone who understands it.

he goal is to swim the 21 miles in your local pool instead of the Channel and to complete it in fewer than 12 weeks. It is free to register and every pound you raise will help St Gemma’s care for people who are living with a terminal illness. By swimming an average of 112 lengths a week, starting on 3rd April, you will complete the crossing in 12 weeks. Swimming is low impact and works the whole body so it is ideal for people of all abilities and ages. It is a great way to build up your stamina or, if you’re a keen swimmer, really push yourself to see if you can complete it even faster. A free fundraising pack will be sent to everyone who registers, which includes a diary to track your lengths, swimming tips, sponsor forms and information about how your fundraising will help support patient care in Leeds. It is only through the fantastic support from the local community that St Gemma’s

Hospice is able to provide all its care and support free of charge. By taking part in this fundraising challenge you will be making a big difference to the lives of patients and their loved ones. To register, visit events.st-gemma.co.uk or call Emily on 0113 218 5559 for further information.

will help to run a series of structured peer support workshops, enabling an inclusive environment that encourages participants to freely discuss and share their ideas and experiences about arthritis. One-to-one Volunteers will run face-to-face or telephone sessions for people with arthritis, exploring practical issues like diet and exercise, pain management, aids and adaptations etc. If you are able to devote some time and share your own experiences and insights, Arthritis Care would love to hear from you. It offers training, expenses and on-going support. YCCC Partners with Children’s Heart Surgery Fund he Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Yorkshire Cricket Foundation recently announced that the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF) was to be the Club’s new charity partner. Over the next two years the Club will work to raise awareness of CHSF, which supports the Congenital Heart Unit at Leeds General Infirmary. This support includes new equipment, accommodation for families, staffing, ward facilities and research. Around 400 children have open-heart surgery at the Unit every year, with around 10,000 patients attending annually for help and treatment. The fund relies on donations from supporters to support patients with

Congenital Heart Disease (CHD) and their families through some of the most difficult times of their lives. “This is a very exciting partnership and one where we genuinely believe we can make a difference”, said Mark Arthur, the Club’s Chief Executive. “We are looking forward to working with the dedicated, hardworking team at Children’s Heart Surgery Fund over the next two years and have huge admiration

for their work. If we can help in any way, whether it be raising funds or awareness, then this partnership will have served its purpose.” To mark the start of the partnership, some of the Club’s senior players visited the Heart Unit ahead of the festive period. Tim Bresnan, Jack Brooks, Ryan Sidebottom, Azeem Rafiq and Will Rhodes took time out of pre-season training to hand out gifts and meet patients, their families and the staff.

DON'T STRUGGLE WITH PAIN – physiotherapy can help Unlike your car that will start to squeak and malfunction when something is wrong with it, your body is very good at adapting and compensating to cope with what life throws at it. Only further down the line will your body start to let you know it is not happy, through pain, stiffness, moving badly and gradually losing the ability to do what you would physically like to do. We often see people at the clinic who have been struggling this way for some time, believing that pain was simply their body's way of telling them they were getting old, should slow down, give up activities they enjoy or take daily painkillers to mask the problem.

be your best with CSPC Physiotherapy CSPC physiotherapists are skilled at working out which part of your body is not doing its job properly, and helping you move better to alleviate your symptoms. Our one hour appointments allow us to seek out the roo t cause of your problem and deliver an effective treatment plan to get you fit and healthy again. We aim to see you on the road to recovery within three treatments and, if not, we will review your case with other members of the team or our network of specialists. CSPC Physiotherapy is holding an open morning at their clinic in North Leeds on Saturday 25th February 2017. Call the clinic on 0113 2750606 to book a free 15 minute consultation and find out if physiotherapy could help you.

The schools work closely with various learning destinations, including Leeds Museums and Galleries, Harewood House, Royal Armouries, and Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre

aunched in November 2014 as part of the nationwide Children’s University Trust, Leeds Children’s University is based at Leeds Trinity University. The programme promotes social mobility by providing exciting and innovative learning activities and experiences outside normal school hours. Pupils (aged 7 – 14) from 20 Leeds schools took part, with pupils from five schools (including Carr Manor Primary) graduating and receiving certificates at a special ceremony at Leeds. The schools work closely with various learning destinations, including Leeds Museums and Galleries, Harewood House, Royal Armouries, and Leeds Sailing and Activity Centre, as well as offering after-school clubs. Children from Parklands Primary (LS14), Sacred Heart Primary (LS4), Carr Manor Primary (LS17), St. Philip’s Primary (LS10), and New Bewerley Community School (LS11) all received certificates; and choirs from St. Philip’s, Holy Rosary (LS7) and St. Anne’s Primary (LS7) entertained with performances in the University’s chapel. “Becoming the base of Leeds Children’s University was an easy decision for Leeds Trinity University, given our organisation’s shared aims”, said Professor Margaret A House, Vice-Chancellor at Leeds Trinity University. “We’re committed to raising aspirations, boosting achievement and fostering a love of learning, so that young people can make the most of their abilities and interests.” For more information about Leeds Children’s University, visit leedstrinity. ac.uk/leedschildrensuniversity

Small Talk New Research Unit Studies How Children Learn Language esearchers at the University of Leeds are gaining new insights into child language acquisition thanks to the recently launched Leeds Child Development Unit. Here, researchers in linguistics investigate how children learn to communicate and how they interact with other people. Most of the research is done through observing how children use language during specially designed activities. The unit works with local nurseries, schools, and families who volunteer to participate in studies, either at school or by going into the LCDU lab. The LCDU runs a variety of studies using toys, games, books, and computers, with children from birth to around ten years of age. Findings from these studies help to answer questions about how grammar, vocabulary, and effective communication develop.

Families who sign up to the database will be contacted when their child reaches an age suitable for a particular study. At that point, a researcher will explain the plans for the study and families can decide if they would like to participate. Studies typically last for around 30 minutes. Carers stay with their child, and the children usually have a lot of fun! The LCDU’s current work is looking at the types of language three year old children hear during shared book reading. By doing this, researchers hope to learn more about the links between the language a child hears and their own language development. The LCDU is looking for more families to take part in language research. For further information or to register, please visit leedscdu.org, email lcdu@leeds.ac.uk, or call 0113 343 3564 and leave a message.

Leeds United Star Leads Training Session at Allerton Grange eeds United mid-fielder Kalvin Phillips recently visited Allerton Grange School to lead a training session with 60 girls from across year groups. News spread quickly around school and a few lucky fans were able to meet him. Kalvin was more than happy to pose for photographs and give autographs. The event was organised by Miss Radford (PE teacher), in partnership with Leeds United Premiership Foundation, as part of the school’s commitment to promote girls’ football at grassroots level. Since the partnership was formed two years ago, the Foundation has provided a coach to run girls’ football every Thursday, as well as a development officer who arranges fixtures with other schools across Leeds. The girls played friendly five-a-side matches and Kalvin gave them feedback on technique. They also had an opportunity ask questions which, along with the training exercise, were recorded by LUFC TV. “This was a fantastic opportunity for the girls to meet a first team player from our local football club”, said Miss Radford. “Getting the chance to train with a professional like Kalvin doesn’t happen every day and it shone the spotlight on girls football. Through the partnership with the Leeds United Premiership Foundation we have been able to increase girls’ participation across all skill levels.”

Adapted from Dick King-Smith’s children’s novel, ‘Babe, The Sheep-Pig’ will be brought to life at West Yorkshire Playhouse from 15th – 18th February. The show will feature stunning puppetry, an original score and a charming ‘baa-ber sheep’ quartet! When Babe arrives at Hogget’s Farm he is taken in by the trusty sheep-dog Fly, and soon discovers a talent for herding. Can a small pig make it in a dog’s world, and, when his farmyard friends are in trouble, can Babe save the day? ‘Babe, The Sheep-Pig’ has been adapted for stage by awardwinning playwright David Wood, best known for his adaptations of classic family titles including ‘Goodnight Mister Tom’, ‘James and the Giant Peach’, ‘The BFG’ and ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’.

The residents of Hogget’s Farm will be brought to life by beautiful handcrafted puppets, created by Max Humphries (Chief Puppet Designer, Cirque de Soleil) and Dik Downey, with the cast delivering masterful puppetry directed by Matthew Forbes (Associate Director Puppetry & Movement, War Horse). Babe, The Sheep-Pig is presented by Tom O’ Connell Productions and Polka Theatre. It is directed by Michael Fentiman, costume and scenic design by Madeleine Girling, lighting by Jack Knowles, sound by George Dennis, and original music by Barnaby Rose. Suitable for all ages.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! ADVERTISEMENT

It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Manager Joel Skinner feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps.

Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Alwoodley, Chapel Allerton, Moortown & Roundhay areas and Joel is finding that his approach is a major factor

in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Joel a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
